The
Perfect Match
Abby Breaux Byrd
A
native of Ohio, Abby has lived in the north metro area most of her life except for time spent in Paris, France, during her middle school years. “My parents and I had a wonderful journey abroad,” said Abby of her life in France. “When we returned to Georgia, we settled in Cumming, where I attended Forsyth Central High school and ultimately met David.” She attended the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega to study art marketing with a concentration in photography, and spent a year aboard in England to study photography. Having spent a life of travel, Abby discovered her passion and talent for photography, and now works as a wedding and portrait photographer in North Atlanta.
David Byrd
D
avid was born in Douglasville, grew up in Snellville, and moved to Cumming in middle school, where he graduated from Forsyth Central High School. Growing up, he loved anything with wheels – four wheelers, dirt bikes, motorcycles – seeking excitement and thrills. He attended the University of North Georgia, then transferred to Kennesaw State University where he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering and a minor in aerospace engineering. He works at Kubota Manufacturing of America as a manufacturing engineer. Like Abby, he has traveled the world for both business and vacation, visiting England, Spain, France, Italy, Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia and the Bahamas – usually with Abby by his side.
The story of our life (before marriage)
R
ewind the clock back to Abby’s freshman year at Forsyth High School where she was placed in the same homeroom class with David, thanks to their last names – Breaux and Byrd. Their first encounter was uneventful, other than the fact everyone referred to David as “Byrd,” which Abby found amusing. “He doesn’t let me live this down, and now the joke is on me because it’s my last name now,” she laughed. In high school, their paths rarely crossed. Abby describes herself as the “quiet band kid,” while David was an outgoing, popular athlete who ran in decidedly different circles. “We graduated high school without ever having said one word to each other,” she added. Fast forward to 2009, Abby’s second year of college, when David wished her “happy birthday” on her Facebook page. Nothing else...just the two words. “That year, for the first time, I decided to thank everyone individually for wishing me a happy birthday,” said Abby. “This turned into a private message between the two of us making small talk and David leaving his phone number.” That led to long walks on the beach and sunset cruises. Just kidding. It led to a ride on his motorcycle, which completely appealed to Abby's love of adventure and travel. “Smooth, right?” she laughed. “Totally worked on me, because my first impression of David was that he was adventurous. Total match up for me.” The two began dating, and Abby knew David might be “the one” when, four months into the relationship, he surprised her with a trip to Paris, where she had lived for several years as a child. “I showed him around Paris and shared a piece of my life that I usually only get to share in pictures,” she said. “No way in high school did I think the two of us would one day travel Europe together!” Their relationship lasted through Abby’s year abroad studying in England, and solidified when she returned and they both enrolled at the University of North Georgia.
On bended knee...the proposal
A

lthough Abby and David had been dating for years, the proposal still took her by surprise. It started with plans for a birthday dinner and David telling her to “dress nicely, and bring a camera.” They drove to a small airport where her best friends were waiting, then hopped aboard a helicopter for a sightseeing tour of Atlanta at night. “The views were fantastic, the sights were stunning, and I am in la la land taking a bunch of pictures,” said Abby, who at this point says she had no clue it was anything more than a fun birthday celebration. That changed when the helicopter landed on the rooftop of the W Hotel in downtown Atlanta, where the group embarked onto the helipad...and David handed her an envelope with “I love us” written on the front. Inside, the envelope contained a screenshot of the “Happy Birthday” Facebook post from 2009, a handwritten note expressing his love for Abby, and concluding with the words “A friendship that last years will last a lifetime.” “He got down on one knee [and] I got so excited that I said ‘yes’ and hugged him before bothering with the ring!” she laughed.

Our wedding day
A
bby Breaux and David Byrd were married on Oct. 13, 2017, at Little River Farms in Milton, attended by eight bridesmaids and eight groomsmen, and witnessed by 85 guests who joined them for the intimate outdoor ceremony. The wedding was performed by their close friend, David Brown, who was ordained specifically for the wedding. “For our wedding, David and I had elements that were not so traditional, such as a first look, which means that we saw each other before the ceremony,” said Abby. “That was one of my favorite moments from our wedding day. Friends and family peeked out through a window as we did our first look, and that felt perfect for us.” They chose Little River Farms for its chic/country farmhouse feel, a garden for the ceremony and the indoor/outdoor reception space with chandeliers, soft candle lighting, and rustic farm tables. Abby also chose to incorporate her love of all things French into the wedding, in homage to her time spent in Paris. ■

In 2014, Blue Sky Papers founder Courtney Bartik took home the trophy for best new product in the wedding category at the 2015 National Stationary Show for her wedding brand ClaireMagnolia. Blue Sky Papers, and its wedding brand ClaireMagnolia, offer a variety of paper products including memory books, guest books, journals and stationery.

very product that comes from Blue Sky Papers, and its wedding brand ClaireMagnolia, are handcrafted, one-of-a-kind pieces. That’s because founder Courtney Bartik strives to give the best to her customers. “Our customers can be assured of quality and fine materials because we have high standards for ourselves and our materials,” Bartik said. “I will source a new material over many, many months to find the perfect fit.” This passion ignited within Bartik at an early age, but it wasn’t until years later when she was able to start her business Blue Sky Papers. She had been bookbinding and doing other creative arts in 2006, while also working another job, when her friend became pregnant. Bartik made a keepsake book which was an immediate hit, so she started making more for other friends. A year later, Blue Sky Papers was created and she began showing products at the 2007 National Stationery Show. Later, in 2015, her vow books would go on to win best new product in the wedding category. While pregnant with her second child, the family moved back to Atlanta and she set up a workshop in the basement. When it became too much to juggle her two jobs and two young children, she quit the corporate world and started running her business full time. After taking over a quarter of the home and needing to hire more employees, Bartik said they acquired a property down the road and moved the business. Three years later and with 10 employees on the team, they ended up in their first official commercial space in Roswell which is nearly 7,000 square feet in size. It wasn’t easy. During her initial stationery show, she landed a few big accounts including a gift website. “Little did I know that working with big box companies was not all that it was cut out to be,” she said.
“They wanted many discounts and terms that were hard for a small business of one to float.” But the website filed bankruptcy with $13,000 outstanding. “It was not glamorous and not fun,” Bartik said. “But the debt it put me in really solidified my commitment to that business. I wanted to see it through to success so that I could pay myself and my vendors back. I could have easily changed my mind at the first sight of hardship, but because of the debt I was in, it really held my feet to the fire.” Now, the business has settled in nicely with consistent online commerce. “I am currently at a place where I want to maintain this size of business,” she said. “It’s one where we can encourage creative careers for my team that they can be proud of, we can pay the bills and also have a little fun all the while experimenting with new materials and methods.” In 2014, they launched a wedding brand, ClaireMagnolia, creating old-school bookbindery for modern brides. “We enjoy working with brides to find the perfect fit for their needs, even at the last minute,” Bartik said. “We enjoy staying on top of the trends, working with partners who are also wedding obsessed and having an important part of the couple’s wedding that is the lasting keepsake.” Bartik said the photo albums, guest books and vow books are a few of the things that remain after the wedding has occurred. “I love that our contribution to our couples’ weddings is the lasting keepsake that will be passed down from generation to generation,” she said. “How amazing is it that in 60-80 years from now a young lady will proudly be using her grandmother’s vow book in her own wedding ceremony. I relish that thought, and so we keep archival quality and fine, timeless fashion in priority in all that we do. Our books truly are timeless keepsakes.” To learn more, visit blueskypapers.com. ■

'Dressing for God' Local artist reveals story behind wedding dress series By JULIA GROCHOWSKI
julia@appenmediagroup.com
L
ocal artist Jenny C. Bustamante is well versed in a variety of mediums, but her recent line of wedding dress paintings have made a big splash – so much so that she’s almost sold out of them. But these unique paintings aren’t just acrylic replicas of actual wedding dresses. While they are inspired by dresses she’s seen, the paintings incorporate objects such as paper, Bible passages and flowers to give an added layer to the works. The result is a piece of art with subtle shades of meaning that can shift each time it’s viewed. “I have a client who just bought one of the dress paintings and she told me, ‘Every time I walk by it, I see something different,’” Bustamante said. “I love that people can look at it and interpret it the way that they want to. I like that there’s a lot of depth to it. That’s why I love mixed media – it’s my goal.” Bustamante said she was partially inspired by a painter she saw in Brazil who named his work, in Portuguese, “Dressing for God.” That in turn reminded her of her grandmother who loved dressing up on Sundays and other church events to make them special. With her grandmother’s matching clothes, red high heels and red purse in mind, Bustamante took up her brush and created the first in what would become a series of wedding dress

paintings. “When I was doing the dresses, with weddings and preparing for marriage, I was thinking a lot about that, about that idea of ‘dressing for God,’” Bustamante said. “The dress is one of my latest pieces, I love the simplicity in the colors and lines yet the depth and mixed media makes it so interesting, the aged Bible verses on love and the strips of lace pieces in between the acrylic paint.” And with each painting, Bustamante kept surprising herself. Some of the works, for example, came out darker in color than she expected, but she didn’t despair. Instead, Bustamante said that the outcome made her think about all of the “different shades of marriage” that people experience. Brazil is not the only place that has influenced Bustamante’s works. She has also recently been exploring wood art after she moved to Georgia two years ago and started working on a few home projects that required wood. It was the stories behind the reclaimed wood that
inspired her. “I just love that it’s some old actual barnwood instead of just wood that you buy at Home Depot,” Bustamante said. “I think it’s just so much more interesting to get a piece that’s been around for a hundred years or a piece of cypress wood that’s been in the water for who knows how many years.” The wood pieces are decorated with Jenny C. Bustamante created a series of paint and tin, as well wedding dress paintings after she was as wreaths during the inspired by an artist in Brazil. holiday season, and often incorporate a word or phrase like “joy,” “peace” or “thankful.” She sells these and other acrylic painting at local art shows, like the Crabapple Arts Festival. While Bustamante has been a lifelong artist, she encourages anyone at any age to let out their inner artist. Bustamante and her work can be found on her Instagram account jennycbu. ■

Ohhh… the month of Love

Is there anything better than LOVE? By KAY PASCHAL
Peachtree Park Prep Owner
A
most magnificent thing happens in our brain and body when we feel love! Love is not just an abstract feeling or emotion – Love actually creates a series of physiological “happenings” in our body that gives us that euphoric, energetic, motivational, and just plain GREAT feeling all over…. it’s physical…not just emotional~~~! Here’s how it happens: someone shows you love ~ you feel love ~ you give love ~ the brain sends a message to the adrenal gland and the adrenal gland then floods our bodies with at least six hormones ~ adrenaline, dopamine,
fenylethylamine, endorphin, and oxytocin. This is our body’s natural drug supply that gives us that “high”. Your heart rate increases, you feel giddy, your palms sweat, your pupils dilate, the state of feeling happy and joyful is at its height. You feel as if you can do anything and there’s absolutely no substitute for this physical feeling ~ you LITERALLY cannot get enough of this feeling ~ we want to experience it over and over and over again and will sometimes do anything in the pursuit of love. So enjoy this special month of LOVE and as 80s great Robert Palmer says, “ Might as well face it, You’re ADDICTED to LOVE” ■

4-book bride series, set at fictional Fleur de Lis, proves true love always prevails By KATHY DES JARDINS CIOFFI Contributing Writer
A
n inveterate romantic, Linda Joyce writes about love. A lot. Of her 10 books and various other published works, romance is the prevailing tempestuous theme. “I believe true love conquers all,” she said. “It’s cliché, but it’s true.” And, in Joyce’s brand of contemporary women’s fiction and romance, what love frequently conquers is her main characters’ unmarried status. Since late 2016, the Kennesaw resident has published a series of four stories about a quartet of romances leading to various altars around Fleur de Lis, a fictional estate on the border of Mississippi and Louisiana. “Each bride has met her soulmate,” explained Joyce, who is from New Orleans. But, as fans of her Fleur de Lis anthology well know, “The course of true love and getting to the altar is not always smooth.” “Branna,” “Biloxi” and “Camilla,” Joyce’s first three bridal e-books, have been compiled in “Fleur de Lis Brides.” The fourth book in the series, “Bayou Brides,” was published in October. The fifth, and final, LINDA JOYCE Fleur de Lis release will be “Bayou Brothers,” said Joyce, though she plans to finish another title or two before wrapping up the series. “I call it dedication,” she said. “My husband calls it obsession.” Her husband might have a point. By the time “Bayou Brothers” is complete, Joyce will have penned at least 13 novels and a host of short stories and poems since leaving her corporate job in 2008, determined to realize a decades-old dream of writing a novel. “Mind you, I had to learn how to write to begin with,” she said, laughing. “Everything I thought I knew about writing was a lie.” Some of the discoveries that classes, conferences and critique groups provided along the way to Fleur de Lis literary success include: • “Dialogue moves a story, not internal monologue.” • “While we speak in mostly passive verbs, in writing you need active verbs.” • “And ‘ly’ adverbs can be death.” Previously fond of characters who “prettily” sat or “daintily” behaved, Joyce said becoming an Amazon best-selling author meant learning to “show, not tell.” And what she shows readers in her bride series is “no matter the obstacles, true love will prevail.” If not the first time around, then the next. “My romance books are about assertive women and the men who love them,” she said. “The women’s fiction I write, also about second chances, focuses on a protagonist’s journey to empowerment.” It’s a familiar path for Joyce. Married for 36 years to her college sweetheart, the man she credits with giving her the “opportunity to fulfill my dream” after a 20-year corporate career, she said, “It’s not surprising my books

have a recurring theme – second chances.” There are, however, several more ongoing motifs in her bride books, from interconnected family relationships to nail-biting romantic intrigue, as Joyce describes below.
Branna: Fleur de Lis Brides Book 1
The winds of Hurricane Katrina have pushed the wedding date for Branna Lind and James Newbern into an uncertain future. She can’t wait on Fleur de Lis to be restored. Otherwise, her secret will shock their families. James’s gun-toting ex-fiancée has been dipping into crazy and causing trouble. However, James protects Branna. She’ll be a Fleur de Lis bride, just as tradition dictates. Or he’ll die trying. Will they ever get to their happily-everafter?
Biloxi: Fleur de Lis Brides Book 2
The Dutrey family will host the finest reception at fully restored Fleur de Lis for Biloxi Dutrey and Nick Trahan. Only days before the wedding, Nick demands a change to the guest list and Biloxi panics, fearing his decision will revive the old Dutrey-Trahan family feud and ruin their future. To get to the altar, Biloxi and Nick face a battle where the family loyalty lines are murky. Will they ever say, “I do?”
Camilla: Fleur de Lis Brides Book 3
Camilla Lind finally accepts Jared Richardson’s ring, but she won’t be pressured into setting a wedding date at Fleur de Lis. When Steven Sterling shows up to convince her of his undying love, he’s not beneath blackmail to get her back. Camilla fears Jared will believe Steven’s lies because of her shameful past. Jared won’t back down from Steven’s threats – but he won’t marry Camilla if the only reason she sets a date is to close the past on Steven. Will Camilla and Jared learn their love is steadfast and strong?
Bayou Brides: Fleur de Lis Brides Book 4
Jazz singer Nola Dutrey is dedicated to her kids’ community band in New Orleans. She meets her best friend’s brother, Rex Arceneau, and her heart trips into love. But she’s New Orleans. He’s New York – there’s no future for them. Rex is home to settle his father’s estate and get the family restaurant running in the black. He wants to cut entertainment and focus on food, then he meets Nola – the weekend singer – and their connection sizzles. New Orleans. New York. New love … but will Nola be a Fleur de Lis bride or will life’s dissonant notes ruin her harmony with Rex and once-in-a-lifetime love? ■

Bridal Hair & Make-up Trends for 2018
Natural but flawless By LORI WYNNE
Style CONTRIBUTOR
T
he 2018 wedding season is already upon us, and with that comes choosing your bridal gown, the dresses for your bridesmaids, and helping your mother and mother-in-law-to-be decide what they will wear on your special day. When you have said, “yes” to the perfect dress, your work is not done. Planning and preparation from the neck up is necessary to complete your look on your special day. Ashlenn Hollingsworth from Aura Hair and Make-up Salon in Alpharetta, gave her expert tips on how to look your personal best on your wedding day.
Hair
“The hairstyle trend for brides in 2018 is a lot more relaxed. Many brides are wearing their hair down in loose waves. Some are wearing their hair half up and half down. Braids are also very popular. Picture bohemian style braids very loose with wispy pieces framing the face.” Everyone in the wedding party can wear braids, but make sure you, as the bride, stand out. Hollingsworth suggests adding
floral pieces to the braids. “Veils are fading out a bit. I am seeing more floral crowns on brides.” For brides who have thin hair, Hollingsworth suggests “tape-in” extensions to create thickness, volume and especially length. A hair stylist trained in bridal hair can add them to your own hair. Product is key to making your loose and natural bridal hair look intentional instead of forgotten. Hollingsworth suggests heat protectant to protect your hair from the extra styling. A texture spray will add hold without restricting movement. Shine spray or finishing spray helps your hair look healthy and match your glowing face when you walk down the aisle.
Make-up
Even if you do not wear make-up on a regular basis, you’ll definitely want to wear it on your special day. Hollingsworth says the goal is to look natural but flawless. Foundation make-up smooths out the skin and keeps you from looking washed out in photographs. Contouring and highlighting make-up is a must to help you look your personal best in pictures. “The make-up trend for brides in 2018 is eye make-up that is smoked out at the outer corners. False eyelashes are a must. For lips, choose a liquid lipstick that is darker than your normal shade. Hollingsworth recommends a

kiss-proof, smudge-proof lipstick, something that won’t smudge on your teeth. “I’m seeing a lot of strong brows, even bushy eyebrows.” Eyebrows frame the face; so don’t neglect this important element when considering what make-up to wear on your wedding day.”
Final Tip
Interview a few hair and make-up stylists before choosing the team that will help you look as wonderful as you will feel on your wedding day. Bring pictures of your style ideas. Hollingsworth recommends booking appointments for initial consultations three to six months in advance. After you have chosen your team, make a plan to have your trial “bridal” hair and make-up done for your bridal shower or bachelorette party. This will help you and your stylist finalize the best look for you and the time required to create it. ■

For example, if things aren’t going as planned, or your dog isn’t behaving well during the shoot (which often happens!), remember to take a deep breath, stay calm and focused. Dogs look to you for guidance and if you’re smiling and reacting with a positive attitude, Fido likely will, too. And you may get some incredible pictures you’ll appreciate later.
Shower them with Treats, Toys & Special Effects:
Bringing treats to the shoot also encourages good behavior, so don’t forget to reward your pup when they are doing a great job. It also makes a special photo when couples add a few extra touches, such as bow ties or flowers to slide onto the dog’s collar. It’s the perfect little touch that says you could not imagine your day without them. ■ Source: www.bridalguide.com

Helping our nation’s heroes through W
ith the average price of a wedding dress hovering around $1,500, many brides may find the dress of their dreams out of their financial
reach. But one non-profit organization, Brides Across America (BAA), is helping to make the wedding dreams of military and first responder brides come true by gifting them with a wedding gown at no cost. Since its founding in 2008, BAA’s “Operation Wedding Gown” program has provided over 20,000 wedding dresses — and more than 20 complete weddings — to our nation’s heroes. Founder Heidi Janson said each year BAA hosts dozens of Operation Wedding Gown giveaway events at participating bridal salons nationwide. Events are held in July (around Independence Day) and November (around Veteran’s Day). “We believe in changing lives [and] if we can change one life and make a difference, we have done HEIDI JANSON what we set out to do,” said Janson, who runs BAA from its headquarters in Andover, Mass. “It is our duty as Americans to support each other and pay tribute to our troops” For the 2018 Operation Wedding Gown event, requests for brides in need are being accepted on the BAA website (www.bridesacrossamerica.com) along with donations to help fund the event.
Selected brides will receive a designer wedding gown at no cost, in addition to all the accessories they need to complete the look. Operation Wedding Gown Giveaway is one of many ways to help our nation’s heroes. Here are other ways to help Brides Across America fulfill its mission.
Donate a Gown
If your wedding dress or special occasion gown is less than five years old and in good condition, consider donating it to BAA. Visit the BAA website to learn the criteria established for donated gowns and how to properly package and ship your items so they arrive safely and in wearable condition. BAA also accepts other items to pass along to its brides, including veils, wedding favors, jewelry and gift cards.
HELP A DESERVING COUPLE
Adopt a Hero
Adopt a military or first responder hero through a single or monthly donation. Brides Across America receives many inspiring stories each year on their website. Many of the heroes featured in the stories have significant medical, financial and personal challenges related to their service. Others have inspired us by their service to community or country. BAA offers donors a chance to recognize a specific hero through a one-time or monthly donation.
ADOPT A HERO
Help a Deserving Couple
Help a deserving military or first responder couple by making a financial donation to them directly on our website. Simply provide BAA with basic information about the couple (pictures and video are optional), and BAA will inform the recipient couple of your gift. Selected gifts to a specific couple may also be featured on the BAA website.
Honor a Military Member or First Responder
You can honor a loved one with a directed gift to a specific military hero. Simply provide BAA with basic information (pictures and video are optional) about your loved one, and BAA will inform the recipient of your gift in their name. Selected stories may also be featured on the BAA website. ■

Interiors
orth Atlanta is a hub for trendy-yet-refined interior decor. With plenty of brick and mortar stores to choose from, the difficult part is picking which styles best reflect your personality and taste. Below, experts offer their views on designing for the Life Styles of today.
Designer Color Trending for “Millennials”…and Beyond!
A
t Tuscany Fine Furnishings we love new uses of fabrics, textures and color. According to Sherwin Williams experts, there are some great new trends in color... "a new neutral that goes everywhere". Millennials continue to make a mark in the world by questioning norms. They are redefining what it means to work, live and play: Eschewing cubicles in favor of collaborative spaces, using phone apps for almost any task imaginable and inventing entirely new hobbies and activities. Their trailblazing qualities cross over into the design world, too. When it comes to design choices, millennials are turning away from traditional neutral colors like beiges, creams and whites, and are blurring the line between what’s considered feminine or masculine on the color wheel. This is where “millennial pink” comes into play. From lipsticks to shoes, and bed linens to
cellphones, millennial pink is a versatile color that gives a modern vibe to any application. But despite its name, millennial pink can bridge age, gender, and application boundaries. Often described as light salmon, peach or Scandi pink, millennial pink is becoming, a new neutral…And because, unlike a more saturated pink, it’s not too bubble gum or Barbie, this almostneutral goes with everything. Sherwin-Williams Director of Color Marketing, Sue Wadden agrees. “Millennial pink is so useful in so many applications. It’s taking the concept of what beige was 10 years ago. Now this pinky neutral has snuck in.” The color pervades in many of our client projects. Millennial pink is a great color that can be incorporated in both contemporary and traditional interiors — or when clients want to mix old and new pieces.
If a client isn’t ready to go all in on millennial pink as a focal point on a wall, it pairs great with “safer” neutrals including grays, creams, and pale greens and blues. Try a warm cream or gray on the walls, complemented by pops of pink in textured pillows, a small piece of furniture or an accessory. Pairing millennial pink with soft neutrals, instead of poppier jewel tones, will help retain a mature, contemporary look, without making a space feel like a kid’s room. Whether you are looking for new paint ideas, a one room update, or a full new home design plan, we would love to help you make it happen. ■

Alpine Custom Cakes creates delicious wedding memories By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidewoman.com
B
ehind the glass display of nearly-too-pretty to eat confections at Alpine Bakery, is an entire division of the company which also supplies custom creations for weddings, special events and simply family gatherings. Alpine Custom Cakes was founded in April 2016 as a wholesale department of Alpine Bakery, which has retail locations in Alpharetta and Woodstock. Within the Custom Cakes division, the pastry chefs create a wide variety of cakes and pies for both the retail sites, as well as to more than 100 other restaurants across the Southeast. “The Custom Cake division solely focuses on special orders from clientele requesting unique products tailored to the needs of their special occasion such as weddings, anniversaries, retirements, graduations, and other events,” explains Kate DeTommaso, who along with Marea Charitat is part of the creative team behind Alpine Custom Cakes. In a typical month, the duo makes anywhere from 60 to 75 special occasion cakes, offering cakes in more than 20 varieties. In addition, Alpine Custom Cakes also creates a dozen different styles of cheesecake, and over 30 different cookies, cupcakes, pastries and pies – many of which can be found within the bakery cases of Alpine Bakery. DeTommaso says wedding cakes are the most popular request of their clients, with raspberry and white chocolate the preferred flavors among the wide array of choices. While most brides lean towards the traditional side of wedding cakes, the two love creating unique designs as well. Television baking shows, such as “Cake Boss” have certainly fueled the trend in custom cakes, with many conversations with brides beginning with “On Cake Boss I saw...” laughs DeTommaso. “The reality shows definitely help with custom cakes,” she added. “It allows people to get creative and draw inspiration for their next event.” 16 | northsidewoman.com | february2018
These shows push the limits of creativity for cake decorating; something both DeTommaso and Charitat enjoy. “We have seen lots of different trends in wedding cakes emerging,” said Charitat, who has been with Alpine Custom Cakes since she graduated from The Art Institute of Atlanta in June 2015. “Some examples include naked cakes, shiny accents or KATE DETOMMASO decorations, and liquor soaked cakes. We are also seeing more brides and grooms selecting nontraditional flavors, and this makes it a more unique experience for the guest.” The two chefs approach each wedding cake design as reflection of bride and groom, with each cake taking on its own unique “personality.” “Each cake is tailor made for the wants and desires of our brides and grooms. We’ve decorated cakes with household plants, childhood toys and even 24karat gold!” said DeTommaso, a 2013 graduate of Keiser University’s baking and pastry department in Florida. She notes the term “wedding cake” can apply to any cake served at a wedding, and there is a wide range of flexibility within that definition. “We have customers that want to make a cake and/ or dessert bar using the items that are provided from our retail bakeries,” said DeTommaso. “We can make any cake a wedding cake. Brides are getting more creative with how they would like to display their dessert.” The range in size and cost of wedding cakes varies with the bride and groom. DeTommaso says they’ve created wedding cakes to serve from two to 200 guests, and ranging from $100 to more than $5000. And last minute weddings are not completely out of the question for Alpine Custom Cakes. DeTommaso and Charitat have delivered cakes in as
little as 12 hours; but most take several days depending on the intricacy of the design and the size. The parent company for Alpine Custom Cakes -- Alpine Bakery -- has been a part of the metro area for nearly three decades, beginning as a wholesale operation supplying restaurants with their cakes, cheesecakes and pies. MAREA CHARITAT The company was started by William Clementi and Stephen Bishop in the basement of their home. The retail operation spun off about 14 years ago with the arrival of the third partner, Anthony DeTommaso, and the expansion of the pastry menu to include cookies, pastries, cupcakes and truffles. The first storefront was located off Houze Road in Alpharetta, focusing primarily on the bakery, with a pizzeria on the side. About a decade ago, Alpine Bakery moved down the street to a much larger (and more upscale) location near the silos in Alpharetta, where it added a full service Italian restaurant to its well-established bakery. The Woodstock location currently is a bakery only. All three owners are very much involved in the everyday operation of both the wholesale and retail operation, and the recipes used for all the desserts have either been created or “reimagined” by the trio. Looking to the future, the Custom Cake Division of Alpine Bakery will continue to grow and expand, said DeTommaso. “Adding new tools, techniques and team members will allow us to stay on the forefront of this industry as well as reach new clientele,” she noted. “In five or 10 year’s time you will likely find us creating cakes in locations throughout the Southeast or possibly nationwide!” ■

Minimally invasive surgical options in gynecologic medicine
T
he field of gynecologic medicine has advanced by leaps and bounds over the last several years. Gone is the necessity for large incisions and long recoveries. According to Dr. John Reyes, Dr. Ingrid Reyes, Dr. Natu Mmbaga, Dr. Annie Kim and Dr. Stacey Pereira of Modern Ob/Gyn, minimally invasive procedures are almost always the best options for patients. Heavy bleeding and painful cycles can now be treated with same day convenient in-office procedures that require no downtime and can be done in the office. “There are so many great options for women; it’s our job to get that information to them and make them aware they don’t need large incisions, long hospital stays, or painful recovery times,” Dr. John Reyes said. “da Vinci robotic surgery is also an amazing service.” Endometriosis, pelvic pain, fibroids, cysts and other common issues are sometimes best addressed with robotic surgery. As the first surgeons to perform da Vinci gynecologic robotic surgeries at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Dr. Ingrid and Dr. John Reyes pioneered the implementation of this fast-growing service in our community. Patients benefit from robotic surgery by having less risk for complications, short overnight hospital stays, faster recovery times, and minimal pain. Modern Ob/Gyn dedicates its gynecologic practice to minimally invasive surgeries and is an experienced leader in our community for robotic gynecologic surgery, performing these procedures at Emory Johns Creek Hospital and Northside Hospital-Forsyth. The physicians at Modern ObGyn enjoy providing second opinions and consultations because they believe it is vital to make patients aware of their choices. “We really value educating our patients so they understand their medical issues, why certain treatments are better than others, and what their options are for treatment,” said Dr. Ingrid. ■

Innovative Dental Whitening Procedures for YOUR Whitest Smile By DR. DAVID REMALEY, DDS Roswell Dental Care
T
he continuous advances in whitening materials and techniques helps preserve tooth structure, minimize dentinal hypersensitivity and enhances dental esthetics. Tooth whitening continues one of the most costeffective ways to improve your appearance within a budget. A beautiful, bright, white and healthy smile can increase self confidence and overall life satisfaction. The demand for whiter teeth has spurred the many innovative technologies available to treat tooth discoloration. When considering tooth whitening it is important to it as a conservative, alternative treatment DR. REMALEY to whiten and lighten discolored teeth that would otherwise be treated with veneers or crowns. Historically, dental whitening was performed in the dental office using a highly concentrated solution of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and isolating the surrounding soft tissues to prevent contact with the whitening agent. Now there is a diverse number of whitening procedures available in the marketplace. These include: • Whitening toothpastes that contain peroxide, enzymes, citrate and other products that augment the cleaning and helps minimize stains. These products are generally more abrasive to the tooth dentin but does increase the luster and esthetics of the teeth. • Over-the-counter (OTC) whitening products alloy for a variety of materials and delivery methods usually at a less expensive cost. Whitening strips containing a 10% H2O2 solution remain a popular technique and has been reported to be safe and effective. • In-office whitening is the initial technique of tooth whitening and uses a concentration of H2O2 up to 40% and have been the most effective and the fastest results. Due to the higher H2O2 concentration, there could be a higher incidence of dentinal sensitivity. • Dentist dispensed, take home applications are a well-established whitening procedure. It was introduced as a nighttime bleaching technique used with bleaching trays and a solution of 10% carbamide peroxide. Newer products with less H2O2 concentration have recently been introduced for patients that cannot tolerate wearing trays at night and only need to be worn 30-60 minutes throughout the daytime. At home application allows for freedom of use whenever convenient and generally results less dentinal sensitivity. Roswell Dental Care offers some of
the most innovative whitening techniques, including the newest GLO SCIENCE, available to greatly improve your smile and the way you feel about yourself. Our office offers exceptional combination of state-of-the-art technology with an overall wellness approach to dental health and appearance. Once you have achieved that cosmetic update it is vital that you take precautions to keep it beautiful. 1. Follow good oral hygiene practices. Brush your teeth at least twice daily and floss at least once daily to remove plaque. 2. Beware of many over the counter teeth bleaching products that are highly PH acidic. These products can cause tooth surface loss and sensitivity. 3. Limit your daily consumption of coffee, red wine and dark colored sodas and drinks such as cranberry juice tend to discolor and stain your teeth over time. After drinking these beverages, it is a good idea to clean and brush right after. 4. Blueberries, cherries and other highly pigmented foods tend to also discolor and stain your teeth over time. After eating these foods it is also a good idea to clean and brush right after. 5. Should you choose to drink carbonated drinks and dark colored sodas do so with a straw! This will allow food dyes to bypass teeth altogether. 6. Don’t smoke. Besides staining your teeth, smoking causes bad breath and increases the risk of gum disease and numerous types of cancer. 7. Many foods act as natural detergents to clean teeth. Chewing foods like apples, carrots, strawberries and celery help to naturally maintain a healthier cleaner and whiter smile. 8. Chew sugarless gum, this helps clean the surfaces of your teeth by stimulating saliva in your mouth. 9. Drink lots of water! Rinse your mouth thoroughly. At Roswell Dental Care, we promise personal and professional service as extraordinary as the innovative technology we use for our procedures. We offer the newest tooth whitening procedures available and together, we will evaluate your needs and determine the best solution to satisfy you. Be sure to ask about our Valentine’s Day Special Whitening Special for all new and existing patients. We were recently voted Best Dentist of North Atlanta in “The Best of the Best” contest, and we can help you maintain that healthy smile for a lifetime. Dr. David Remaley has been treating patients like family for over 30 years in Roswell and the North Atlanta area. We always welcome new patients! We will be happy to offer a COMPLMENTARY evaluation if you or any family member is experiencing any dental complications or discomfort. What’s New in Melanoma – Part 1 By DR. BRENT TAYLOR
Premier DERMATOLOGY AND MOHS SURGERY OF ATLANTA
M
elanoma is often a confusing diagnosis for patients and their loved ones. Available tests and treatments are complicated. Statistics can appear to contradict one another. And navigating clinical trials and research opportunities can be overwhelming. Fortunately, advances are being made against this cancer. Physicians can increasingly provide their patients with clarity. Now, there are more reasons than ever to be hopeful. Melanoma is a cancer of the pigment-producing cells of the skin. These cells, called melanocytes, are the same ones that allow many people to tan in the summer. When one of these cells goes bad and becomes cancerous, we call it a melanoma. Melanoma “in situ” is the mildest melanoma. Invasive melanoma is worse. And “metastatic” melanoma is melanoma that has already spread. If melanoma cells are still confined to the highest level of the skin (the epidermis) then the melanoma is still “in situ” or in the site it should be. For a
melanoma in situ, removing the cancer surgically can result in a cure rate of 99%. Once a melanoma has invaded below the epidermis, the melanoma is “invasive.” Invasive melanomas can often be cured by excising them (cutting them out with a margin of healthy-looking tissue), the deepest invasive melanomas have often spread even before they can be excised. Finally, metastatic melanoma is melanoma that has spread to other parts of TAYLOR the body. Each of these categories of melanoma has had exciting advances in recent years. This week, we will take a look at an important advance in treating melanoma in situ and shallow invasive melanomas. Next week, we will discuss tools and treatments for more aggressive melanomas. For melanoma in situ and some shallow invasive melanomas, “real time” Mohs surgery has come into its own as the state of the art method for treating melanoma in areas of the body such as the nose and eyelid where it is important to
February is Children’s Dental Health Month I n February, for over seventy years, dentists, parents, and children all across America observe National Children’s Dental Health Month. This all began as a one-day event in Cleveland, Ohio on February 3rd, 1941, and the first national observance of Children’s Dental Health Day was held on February 8th, 1949. It has since grown into a month-long celebration. Our message of the importance of oral health goes out to millions of children and adults in communities across the country, and includes such events as health fairs, dental office tours, and visits to the classroom by dentists and hygienists. Dr. Ushma Patel has volunteered at local schools giving educational programs to several children’s classes on how to take care of their teeth and talking to them about nutrition to keep them healthy. One of the reasons for this special annual event is that many people are still unaware of the important role early dental care plays in our children’s overall health. We strongly recommend that parents take action early to ensure the health of their children’s teeth because attitudes and habits established at an early age are critical in maintaining good oral health throughout life. Children’s teeth are meant to last a lifetime, and a healthy smile is important to a child’s self-esteem. With proper care, a balanced diet and regular dental visits, their teeth can remain healthy and strong. Please make sure that we see your child within six months of the eruption
of the first tooth as recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA), and certainly no later than the child’s first birthday. Preventive care such as cleanings and fluoride treatments PATEL provide your child with “smile insurance” for a lifetime! Tooth decay is the most common childhood disease. 5 X times more common than Asthma. Tooth decay is entirely preventable. 3 out of every 5 children are CORBETT affected by tooth decay. 51 million school hours are missed due to oral health problems. Every $1 spent on prevention in oral care can save you $8-$50 on restorative and emergency procedures. If you wish for any further information on any aspect of your child’s dental and oral health, please call us at 678-894-7926 or visit us on the web at www.HiTechSmiles.com. We’d be happy to help in any way we can! We do see many children of our adult patients. spare as much healthy tissue as possible. Mohs surgery is well known for being the gold standard method for curing basal and squamous cell carcinomas of the skin. Prior to recent years, difficulties staining melanomas made it difficult to perform “real time” Mohs for melanoma. As a result, “slow Mohs” developed, but slow Mohs is a misnomer: With slow Mohs, a melanoma or other cancer is cut out and sent to a lab where a pathologist checks the edges in the “Mohs manner” – that is, the pathologist looks at all the edges and maps out where tissue needs to be removed. Slow Mohs typically requires 1-3 days for results, and the patient waits with a bandaged but still open wound while results are being obtained. Each additional “layer” of tissue that has to be removed requires an additional 1-3 days of processing time. In contrast, true Mohs surgery for melanoma or melanoma in situ involves using special stains in the Mohs surgeon’s own laboratory. This is same day “true” Mohs surgery because the same dermatologist is both the surgeon and the pathologist. Staining takes 1-3 hours per layer. As a result, multiple layers of Mohs surgery as well as the final suturing step can usually all take place in the same day. True Mohs surgery for melanoma is available at only a few practices in the state of Georgia, but as knowledge of this technique grows it should increasingly
become the treatment of choice for melanomas in locations such as the face, scalp, shins, hands and feet - where tissuesparing is important. For particularly delicate locations such as the edge of the eyelid, true Mohs surgery often involves a team approach. The Mohs surgeon will often clear the melanoma from someone’s eyelid in the morning. Then, the patient may have eyelid reconstruction with an oculoplastic surgeon that afternoon or the following day. True Mohs surgery for melanoma allows for faster, high quality treatment and expedited cure and reconstruction. At Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta, we are proud to be one of the only practices in the state of Georgia offering true Mohs surgery for melanoma. If you or a loved has been diagnosed with a melanoma in a cosmetically or functionally sensitive area such as the scalp, face, hands, feet or shins, then consider a consultation with Dr. Brent Taylor and explore whether true Mohs surgery for melanoma is right for your. This week, we reviewed what melanoma is and discussed the exciting availability of Mohs surgery for melanoma. In the next issue, we hope you’ll enjoy learning about new diagnostic and prognostic tests for invasive melanoma and hearing about exciting modern treatments that were not available just a few years ago. ■

HALT Stress Management I
t’s a given. We all have stress. Somedays we are pretty good at managing it. Other days we are not. Whether we damage ourselves or those around us, whether the damage is immediate or sneaky & slow, the clincher is identifying that you are stressed out before you act crazy. Here is a quick and easy acronym to help you see the yellow flag before it becomes red: HALT. Hungry. Angry. Lonely. Tired. Hungry: Oh yes, we all know this one and can spot it in friends who are normally nice but just blew their top over something small or manageable. If you are hungry, do not make important decisions or quick assessments until you’ve eaten something. Angry: Yep, let’s check that one on the list too. Did you know that when you are angry, it is biologically difficult for your brain to process rational thought? It’s as if those nerves bypass the many filters we have and have a short cut to regretful words and actions. Lonely: This one is surprisingly common. If your life feels like a hurricane, then you are probably lonely sitting in the eye. It seems calm, but you feel empty. It’s difficult to make decisions at this point because your perspective becomes warped. Go to the park and walk around. Say hi to everyone you meet. Smile at the children. Then make your decisions. Tired: Zzzzzzz, good morning Sunshine! Did you not get enough sleep last night? Our brains needs sleep to process our thoughts and activities of the day. Without sleep, the information in your head is like a computer in need of defragment. Islands of information are just floating around with no logic to tie them all together. The next time you are stressed. Recognize HALT conditions and refrain from decisions and comments. Try it once. Then go and give yourself a reward - something you don’t normally allow yourself. Then try HALT again, and again. ■

Are your tattooed brows really “semi-permanent”? Smiling Is
Good For You!
By BARBARA RAHN, RN CPCP
Enhanced Beauty Permanent Makeup
T
he term “semi-permanent” has been seen in the media on a daily basis over the past year. The expression is used frequently by those with minimal education in the field of cosmetic tattooing. Cosmetic tattooing is just that, “TATTOOING”! A tattoo is defined as pigment placed into the dermal layer of the skin. Once the pigment is implanted, the pigment molecules will be in the skin indefinitely. The RAHN color may fade but the pigment molecules will still be in the skin. It is unfortunate that inexperienced or poorly trained technicians might convince an unsuspecting client that excessive fading and frequent follow up procedures are “normal”. If pigment is placed into the skin excessively, new color molecules will not find space in the dermal layer. The pigment will just not implant into the skin. Lovely, permanent makeup is wonderful in our early 20’s through 40’s. It becomes even more appreciated after age 40 when vision decreases. Later in life when manual dexterity can become a problem and applying makeup everyday can be tedious, we really value permanent cosmetics. Frequent attempts to apply color into the skin is unsafe and has two major side effects. Anytime the skin integrity is compromised, the possibility of infection is increased. It can also develop scar tissue. Microblading has become the “buzz word” in the cosmetic tattooing industry. It is sold as “semi-permanent”. Many clients ask me for microblading when in fact, they are really desiring a soft, natural hairstroke eyebrows. There are many tools and techniques in the cosmetic tattoo industry that will result in a natural looking brow. Microblading is not for all skin types and is not a procedure that should be done on a yearly basis. Seek out a professional that has been extensively trained in many techniques. Choose someone that will give you soft, long lasting, natural appearing permanent makeup that will not build up scar tissue and will require much less maintenance down the road. I am an RN that has several years of training in the permanent cosmetic field. I attend continuing education approximately every 3-4 months. I have successfully combined my nursing career with my experience in art and artistic expression. Call me at 404.548.4148 for safe, natural looking permanent makeup. I can be found on FaceBook at Enhanced Beauty Permanent Makeup and Instagram at EBpermanentmakeup. You may also visit my website at www. EBpermanentmakeup.com. ■

miling seems like an involuntary response to something funny or cute, but it is much more than that! Studies suggest that smiling, whether forced or spontaneous, can have a positive effect on your mood, decrease stress JORDAN levels, and even make others around you feel better. What happy news! Here are 10 surprising benefits of smiling that will make you want to smile more. 1. Smiling is contagious: Because of complex brain activity that occurs when you see someone smiling, smiles are contagious. Studies report that just seeing one person smiling activates the area of your brain that controls your facial movement, which leads to a grin. 2. Smiling lowers stress and anxiety: It’s not easy to keep smiling in stressful situations, but studies report that doing exactly that has health benefits. So, the next time you’re feeling stressed, just try to smile to calm yourself down. 3. Smiling releases endorphins: Smiling can help you manage stress and anxiety by releasing endorphins, chemicals that make you happier.

Endorphins are the same chemicals you get from working out or running resulting in what is known as a runner’s high. Smile more to get that “high” without running! You’ll be more attractive: Smiles make you appear more attractive because a smile on your face suggests that you’re personable, easy going, and empathetic. Smiling strengthens your immune system: Smiling makes you immune system stronger by making your body produce white blood cells to help fight illnesses. One study found that hospitalized children who were visited by story-tellers and puppeteers who made them laugh had higher white blood cell counts than those children who weren’t visited. You’ll be more approachable: Turn that frown upside down if you want to make some friends! Studies have found that people are more will to engage socially with others who are smiling. A smile is a great way to say hello and is an inviting facial expression that tells people that you are willing to talk and interact with them. Smiling will help you encourage others: Our natural tendency is to stick to things that are
familiar but smiling decreases this need. One study found that smiling can make people more comfortable in situations they would otherwise feel awkward in. 8. Smiling makes you seem more trustworthy: If you want to improve your credibility, simply smile more. What could be easier than that? Trusting doesn’t come easily to many, but smiling at someone may help! 9. Smiling makes you a better boss: Great bosses aren’t bossy! If you’re in a position of power, or want to be, smiling may be the key to success. It turns out that smiling can be a more effective leadership technique than bossing everyone around. 10. You can’t get a cold from smiling: With cold season on the rampage greet your friends and colleges with a smile instead of a handshake or a hug. You won’t pick up a cold or the flu that way! 11. Smiling is an easy way to boost your mood, be healthier, feel better, and be viewed as more trustworthy and a better leader. Whenever you’re in a stressful situation or are feeling down, slap a smile on your face and take advantage of the many benefits smiling has to offer. Remember you’re never fully dressed without a smile! ■
How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Count the Ways… By AMY HENTSCHEL Senior PROVISIONS
E
lizabeth Barrett Browning wrote beautifully in her Sonnet 43 of all the ways that she felt love towards her husband. In this the month of love, I felt compelled to write of the very tangible ways that we can show our love to our family by preparing for the inevitable course of aging. One of the most loving things you can do for your family is to have a HENTSCHEL plan and provisions for when you begin to need care. Here is a short list of items to consider when addressing the future: Legal Issues Up-to-date will, durable power of attorney, living will, and Medicaid planning Estate Plan Tax implications on gifts and inheritance, trusts, and property ownership Medical Expenses
Cost of long-term care, insurance, Medicare and Medicaid benefits Medical Care Doctors, specialists, list of medications, medical history Housing and Care Home modifications, senior communities, private caregivers, home safety End of Life Plan and Care Hospice care, funeral arrangements, and living will wishes These items can seem overwhelming to accomplish all at once. We recommend with our clients that they take one or two items a year and find the best resource in the community to help you create a plan. Some arrangements may change over the course of the years, but to have some plan is better than no plan. We are always available to help get you started and point you in the right direction. May everyone find time this month to share some love with a senior in your life. In my old grief’s, and with my childhood's faith. I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death. – Amy Hentschel, senior care consultant and owner of Senior Provisions, LLC. www.
