or more than 20 years, the Hunter family has been a part of the Christmas holidays for thousands of families, providing the trees, wreaths and other festive trimmings from their family Christmas tree farm. For owners Gordon and Brooke Hunter, and daughters, Brenna Fillerup, Janine Simpson and Janelle Tencza, the business model has always included giving back to the community which has given so much to them. Ten years ago, Hunter’s Christmas Tree Farm became involved in the Troops for Trees program which has provided thousands of real Christmas trees to military members and their families. The public is encouraged to purchase a tree at the farm which will be delivered via FedEx to military families across Georgia in time for

Christmas. “We’ve always looked for ways to support the community,” said Brooke. “[The Trees for Troops] program has been heartwarming and a wonderful thing to be a part of for the past 10 years.” Nationwide, the goal of the Trees for Troops program is to provide approximately 20,000 Christmas trees to military families across the country, and even overseas where troops are stationed. Over the years, some families have come in to buy a tree for Trees for Troops, even if they are not buying one for themselves. “That is so rewarding to see,” said Janine Simpson. “They come in each year and just want to be a part of the program because it’s so meaningful to them.” While the Hunters differ on the exact year the business sold its first tree, 1989 or 1990, they all agree on one thing. For many families who return year after year, the Christmas season starts with a trip to the Hunter Christmas Tree Farm. “What makes a trip here special is it’s a total experience,” said Gordon. “Kids can go on pony rides, hayrides, make ornaments, visit Santa and enjoy hot chocolate while they find their perfect tree.” The Hunters bought the 25-acre property off Wood Road in Milton in 1984, with the intent to live the equestrian lifestyle like so many of their neighbors. But Brooke came across an article about Christmas tree farms, and a seed, literally, was planted. “We had no experience ... none whatsoever,” laughed Gordon, a retired Delta pilot, who along with Brooke is originally from California. “We thought growing trees would be easier than horses ... no vet bills, no feed. So we cleared land
and started planting [seedlings].” Brooke and Gordon gained knowledge and sought advice from the Georgia Christmas Tree Association and the National Christmas Tree Association, attending meetings and visiting other farms to learn the business. While the effort involved in growing trees versus horses is debatable, the Hunter family has successfully grown the Christmas tree farm from their first batch of seedlings on the five-acre plat, to more than 500 mature Christmas trees available each season. Brooke said their daughters helped as much as they could in building the family business while attending Milton High School at the time, then off to college at Brigham Young University in Utah. “They came home from college and helped out, knowing that the Christmas tree farm was helping to pay their tuition!” laughed Brooke. Today, twin daughters Janine and Janelle now run the family business. Brenna, who lives in Colorado, comes home around the holidays with her family to lend a hand. Gordon and Brooke are fully retired and content to be advisers and ambassadors for the business they built. The family enjoys its limited off time from about mid-December when the season’s batch of trees are sold, to February when the ordering and planting of new seedlings starts anew. And with 15 grandchildren in the family, a pipeline is in place to keep Hunter's Christmas Tree Farm viable for generations. “It was a lot of work [getting it started], but it’s been such a wonderful, happy business with family involved,” said Gordon. “There is always a happy ending at the holidays, and something you look forward to each year.” ■

ACOUSTIC LIVING ROOM The best jazz you will ever find between a Brazilian wax place and a sandwich shop.”

By LORI WYNNE Contributing Writer
T
amara Fuller was an executive consultant for decades traveling four days a week. While running through a Chicago airport, she spotted a USA Today magazine cover about America’s cultural centers leaving the urban areas. This planted a seed in her mind, but didn’t germinate immediately. In 2006 she retired and decided to embark on an epic entrepreneurial venture and failed. It was a total loss. For consolation, Fuller listened to old live jazz records. One night she asked herself, “Could I make a living listening to jazz?”
The Dream:
“During this time of my life, I had a recurring dream. I found myself walking through a forest with huge trees hanging over a dirt path. The path led to a stream of light shining down on a grassy knoll. In my dreams, many of my favorite jazz artists would play for me in this grassy area. When they finished, they would always ask me the same question, ‘What’s for dinner?’ “
The Plan:
With the USA Today cover title in her mind, Fuller looked at many locations in the Metro Atlanta area and Forsyth County. She realized people wanted to appreciate the musical arts without the sketchiness that can be a part of urban areas. She found a suitable locale in a former frozen yogurt place on Old Milton Parkway in Alpharetta. Fuller was attracted to the area because, “The city of Alpharetta is making strides to help its residents enjoy live music. Mayor Belle Isle is instrumental in this endeavor.”
Tamara Fuller, Owner and General Manager.
It took six months to renovate the store in the middle of a strip mall into the acoustical living room. She consulted with George Seldon, (a protégé of George Lucas) to create the perfect sound experience. The ceiling was raised fourteen feet to create a feeling of being under the night sky and to enhance the sound. Proprietary sound equipment is also part of the special feel of the acoustic living room. There is even special padding under the carpet with the sound in mind.
The Velvet Note:
“The vision of the Velvet Note is different and it’s on purpose.” The décor is “tree” themed, inspired by Fuller’s recurring dream. The carpet is brown to symbolize the dirt path. Just like Fuller’s dream, in this 40-seat venue, audience members literally sit at the feet of the performers. There is not a bad seat in the place. Every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, at the beginning of every performance, Fuller welcomes the audience into her acoustic living room with this phrase, “This is the best jazz

▼INTERVIEW, Continued from Page 8 you will ever find between a Brazilian wax place and a sandwich shop.” This puts the audience at ease and sets the tone for the performers in this intimate venue. “People are looking for entertainment that involves them.” For the past four and a half years, the Velvet Note gives the audience members a toe-to-toe experience with the artists. “When a musical artist prepares a performance for the stage, they practice technique and vibe. It’s like preparing for a kiss. A performer is essentially kissing the audience. At the Velvet Note, the audience ‘kisses’ you back.” With such an unusual opportunity to interact with the audience, the Velvet Note attracts well-known jazz and vocal artists such as Chandra Currelley, Christian McBride, and Scotty Barnhart.
While the Velvet Note is satisfying its audience auditorially, it provides a menu of appetizers and entrees created by a New York-trained chef to satisfy the palate as well. The delicious fare is served on paper plates with plastic forks to avoid the din of silverware scraping against ceramic disturbing the musical experience. There are no tables for just two people. All of the tables seat at least four. People are usually seated with strangers, but by the end of the evening, they have created connections with people that share the same love of live jazz music. Many patrons return with the people they have met at the Velvet Note. This is what we love to do, “Bring people closer to the performer, closer to each other and closer to the song in your heart.”
The Velvet Note gives back:
Fuller was also interested in creating a jazz venue in Alpharetta because of the rich interest in music. “The area has great music opportunities for kids.” Families, middle schools and high schools invest in scholastic sponsored bands and nurture a love of music in the youth of the area. To support that, the Velvet Note offers local schools’ jazz students the opportunity to perform twice a year on stage to an intimate and engaged audience.
What’s next for the Velvet Note?
In a year and a half, The Velvet Note will host its first jazz festival. Top names in jazz will be performing. To keep in “the know” check out http://thevelvetnote.com/■

reda Hardage’s days usually start at 6 a.m. and don’t end until at least 7 p.m. It’s all part of her plan to give back and be a good neighbor. And 12-hour days are all part of being a heavily involved volunteer and business woman in the community. During the day, her role is director of the Alpharetta Medical Campus, coordinating its five buildings and largest outpatient campus, and Foundation Services for Northside Hospital. After admiring a neighbor who was a nurse, Hardage was inspired to join the medical community. “I thought she had a cool job,” she said. “When I was in high school she would let me volunteer in her clinic. I really wanted to be a nurse.” While still wearing her nursing hat every day, Hardage said her job consists of managing multiple services. And a component of her job with the foundation brings a philanthropic side to the hospital. “We look at how we can give back to the community,” Hardage said. “It’s a give and take on the foundation side. We have events where we raise money for special causes. Then we also give over $2 million a year back to the community to support the nonprofits. We want to support the community we serve.” And even with spending most of her time at work, Hardage said she loves what she does. “I enjoy what I do, and I think that’s how you find a happy balance in life,” she said. “If you’re going to work every day and you enjoy what you’re doing, you make time

She is involved with various groups including the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce Executive Board, MARTA Board of Directors, Johns Creek Beautification Board of Directors, President Emeritus of the Board of Directors at the Drake House, Legislative Council for State Bridge Crossing Elementary and on the Leadership Council for the Atlanta American Cancer Society.
What makes the community great are all the opportunities its people have been given, Hardage said. “Everyone needs to give back in one way or another and try to help someone less fortunate or who doesn’t have the opportunities we have,” she said. “It’s something I feel passionate about and I want to try to help my neighbors and even people I don’t even know. If I can make it a better place to live or work, I would like to do that. I’d like to think I left a little mark on North Fulton and that I was a good neighbor.” ■

here most see a block of non-descript clay, sculptor Allison Elia sees infinite possibilities just waiting to emerge through the skills of her tools and her hands. “There is so much potential in clay,” said Elia, who is wrapping up a two-year residency at the Roswell Art Center West. “I love the power of the presence a finished sculpture has in a gallery, although I’ll admit I’m constantly battling gravity when sculpting in the studio.” She welcomed the opportunity to come to Roswell to serve as the resident ceramic artist, as well as to teach sculpture classes, despite the fact she knew no one before making the trek down South. “I felt instantly welcome even without knowing a soul before I made the move,” said Elia. “I have no partner, no children, and not even a fish in a fishbowl to consider when I make a move. It’s mostly the question of how large a van I’ll need to rent to transport my sculptures and how many will get a seat with a seatbelt!” She grew up in Ohio and earned her degree in painting and ceramics from the University of Akron, followed by her master’s in ceramics at the University of Massachusetts.
16 | northsidewoman.com | december2016
Elia has been an artist for as long as she can remember, beginning with two-dimensional drawings of people and animals, and moving to three-dimensional sculpting in college. “The animate subjects have always interested me — there can be beauty and energy in a sunrise or still-life,” said Elia. “But not nearly as much emotion or gesture as that of a face or body in motion.” She had experimented with sculpting on the rare occasion, then took a ceramics class her junior year in college and fell in love with the process. Elia soon realized that sculpting not only required artistic skills, which she had, but also problem-solving skills, which she acquired. “My technical skills – the ability to render the figure in three-dimensional form and in proportion – along with the skills necessary to work large-scale in clay did not fully develop until maybe five years after I had started sculpting in clay,” she noted. But Elia took to the process quickly, creating pieces that found a market among collectors. She remembers the first piece she sold, a twofoot sculpture of Medusa, along with her mixed emotions of parting with it. “So I was advised by a friend to ridiculously overprice it so it would either not sell ... or if

someone actually wanted to pay that much for it, I’d be able to part from it without feeling a loss,” Elia recalls. “That was very good advice.” Her pieces now include life-size figures, rendered from 200 to 300 pounds of solid clay, with the end result often dictated by where the clay takes her. She starts with a small-scale version of the finished product to keep her focused during the process. “If I don’t plan it right, the clay will do what it wants to do without my supervision,” she said. “I am often deciding if I should go with the clay’s natural intention or stay with my artistic plan. Every piece brings different choices and I love the challenge, for better or worse.” Elia also begins most of her sculptures with a drawing, sketched out from the ideas in her mind. “I draw about as much as I sculpt. And I prefer to use pen when I draw because it forces me to work through my ideas decisively without lagging behind on erasing mistakes,” she said. Most of Elia’s large-scale ceramic sculptures

are of people, primarily women, balanced in powerful, yet precarious poses. She loves creating pieces that appear to defy gravity – the apple floating seemingly just out of the reach of extended fingers – or describe, without words, the emotions of hope, guilt and perseverance. “I don’t use live models but often reference dance photography, yoga, and underwater photos that I took a few years back with [a friend] in her swimming pool,” Elia said. “My figures are meant to capture unique emotional and psychological experiences in their pose and gesture. I often refer to my work as ‘sculptural snapshots.’” In her free time, away from her teaching and sculpting, Elia is working on a book about her own perseverance as an artist. At its core is a deep dive into her feelings about the 15 sculptures she made, then destroyed, before they ever made it out of her studio. Each sculpture takes about a month to create, from start to finish, and Elia estimates she spends anywhere from four to 40 hours a week actively sculpting, and at least 10 hours sketching. “I’m 31 now but still enjoy pulling an overnight of sculpting if there is a time crunch — though 10 hours in a row is usually when I reach a max of my ability to stay focused,” she noted. Her finished works, primarily her larger pieces, are located in her permanent studio in Elia transporting her work for instalRhode Island, and she’s had two solo shows at lation in a two person show, "Transitions" in Akron, OH 2014. the Roswell Art Center West of pieces she has created here. While she’s not the epitome of the “starving artist,” Elia said her goal is to be a successful studio artist where she can drop her anchor permanently and simply create. “I can live anywhere and be happy,” said Elia, who has been an artist in residence in several states. “Most importantly I want to continue making art in any way shape or form. I would never take back the decision to pursue a career as an artist, it’s been a wild ride but I treasure every moment.” . ■

ince 2011, Pasquale and Linda Cardamuros have had a front row seat to the changes that have taken place in downtown Alpharetta, as the options for shopping and dining have multiplied. And as the owners of La Casa Italian Grill, prominently placed at the epicenter of change on Old Roswell Street, they also play an active role in Alpharetta’s emergence as a dining and entertainment destination. “We have loyal customers who feel at home at La Casa, but we see new people moving into the area daily,” said Pasquale Cardamuros. “Alpharetta has become a little city and we are proud to have become part of the history.” While he keeps a mainstay of customer favorites on the menu, Cardamuros also strives to keep the menu fresh and evolving at La Casa. Each year he returns to Italy, his native country, and comes back with new ideas, recipes and trends. “We change our menu every season to offer the seasonal and freshest ingredients available,” he added. “The changes over the years [have included] grain-free chicken, gluten-free meals and an increase in seafood specials.” But it’s the mainstays on the menu that keep customers returning, and the “must try” items for the first time diner. These include the chicken radiatori, mare chiaro (fresh seafood) and spaghetti squash, all of which would cause a customer revolt if ever removed from the menu, laughs Cardamuros. “Every meal at La Casa is prepared to order, and the sauces and breads are made daily,” he said. “We aim to serve farm to table as much as possible ... and the seafood

La Casa Italian Grill is Pasquale’s seventh restaurant venture in the Atlanta area, and the culmination of a lifetime spent in dining rooms and kitchens. “I have been in the restaurant business from the age of 7 when I was a bus boy in my dad’s restaurant,” said Cardamuros. “[When I moved to Atlanta] I started in the pizza business in local malls and have owned my own restaurants for the last 25 years.” At La Casa, the full range of Cardamuro’s skills come into play, from the selection of each menu ingredient to the finished dinner and the entire customer experience. “New ideas and trends are created between myself and my chef. We discuss weekly new specials with fresh seafood and available farm fresh vegetables. I discuss with my family in Naples the latest trends and the newest ideas and try to bring to La Casa,” he explained. Guests at La Casa will likely be greeted by Cardamuros personally as they enter the restaurant; an important part of ensuring each guest is treated as such. “We are not a chain or franchise--we are family owned,” he emphasized. “Our goal is to treat every customer like family, and give them the opportunity to have a taste of Italy in our beautiful historic house that we transformed into a cozy restaurant.” The dining room is decorated with hand-painted tiles that Cardamuros brought over from Italy, along with family antiques and treasures designed to give the space an authentic feel. Guests can dine inside, or on the outdoor heated patio which looks out onto downtown Alpharetta. As for the many changes in downtown Alpharetta over the past several years, he welcomes the changes but hopes the area can also maintain a small-town feel with a walkable atmosphere. “We would love to see a play area, green area with fountains, children’s area, and trees,” said Cardamuros. “We feel this area should be kept open and airy so people with families will have a walking area and it can become a source for art festivals and other downtown festivities.” ■

Joy to the Book World Supporting local authors pays off in gifts that keep on giving
By KATHY DES JARDINS CIOFFI Contributing Writer
L
ooking for presents that pack the biggest bang for a holiday buck? It’s hard to beat books by local authors. Like most writers this time of year, the 12 featured here, minus perhaps two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree, will be drumming up business every way they can throughout December. “The best book-selling time of the year is October through Christmas,” said Bob Babcock, founder and CEO of Deeds Publishing Company, a family-owned and operated publisher working with both experienced and first-time authors. Deeds Publishing – Babcock, his wife Jan, son Mark and a small staff – offers titles in print and e-book formats in a range of genres from roughly 100 writers across the country, including many from North Fulton and Forsyth County. “Instead of a tie or a gaudy sweater,” Babcock said, “books make great gifts.”
MYSTERY/SUSPENSE:
“Aftermath,” by George Weinstein, Roswell. Janet Wright left tiny Graylee, Ga., at 5 when her mother fled a destructive marriage. Now 40 and reinventing herself, Janet returns as the sole inheritor of her recently murdered father’s valuable estate. She is soon tangled in Graylee’s web of secrets, lies, and scandals — and in fear for her own life. Weinstein will be at The Chandlery, Roswell, Dec. 10, 18, 21, 22 and 23 from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Book clubs can receive discounted, personalized copies as well as schedule Weinstein to speak by going to georgeweinstein.com/ contact. “The Martyr’s Brother,” by Rona Simmons, Cumming. A suicide bomber at a Middle East checkpoint shatters more than those around him. Shafra, his brother, wants to follow in his footsteps, and Alicia Blake is haunted by her husband’s violent end in the attack. When Shafra arrives in America with his sights set on Atlanta, Alicia holds the key to stopping him before he rips the world apart. Simmons will be appearing with two other suspense writers, a trio known as The Killers Next Door, at Bookmiser, Roswell, Dec. 10 from noon-3 p.m. “Smitten,” by Jeremy Logan, Alpharetta. Between 1967 and 1982, 26 people were suspected victims of serial killers in Atlanta. In this coming-of-age romance interrupted by a serial killer, Michelle and Ben were 18 and in love when Clay killed his first victim. Why her? And why did he start sending Michelle letters two years later? How could Ben prevent Michelle from becoming the next victim? Logan, one of The Killers Next Door, will be at Roswell’s Bookmiser Dec. 10 from noon-3 p.m.
22 | northsidewoman.com | december2016

Darracott will be one of The Killers Next Door at Roswell’s Bookmiser Dec. 10 from noon-3 p.m. “Let Vengeance Be Mine,” by David Twilley, Alpharetta. JIM GRAY
By LORI WYNNE Contributing Writer
Northside Man: Jim Gray, retired Delta Pilot City of Residence: Cumming Hometown: Dearborn, Michigan Family: My wife, Lynne, and I have been married 51 years. We have two boys and four grandchildren in our extended family. They all live nearby in Cumming and Peachtree Corners.
D
oes this smiling face look familiar to you? Perhaps you have seen him at Barrington Hall in Roswell playing the part of Barrington King. Did you recognize the twinkle in his eye during a walking tour of Restless in Rest Haven, the historic cemetery in Roswell? Did you recognize his voice in the local productions of Annie, Oliver, King Lear, Measure for Measure or To Kill a Mockingbird? If you haven’t recognized him yet, you soon will. Jim Gray, a fifteen-year Cumming resident and retired Delta pilot landed the part of Kris Kringle in the ACT1 Theater’s upcoming musical production of Miracle on 34th Street. See him portray this iconic character every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from Nov. 25 through Dec. 18. NSW recently sat down with this versatile gentleman to learn more about the man behind characters he plays.
When did you become involved in the local theater scene?
“I have had a love of the theater and history for many years. After retiring from Delta Airlines in 2003 I pursued my interest in theater by becoming involved in local theater productions. I have been involved in ACT1 Theater for six
ACT1 THEATER PRESENTS
years. I also enjoy portraying local historical characters in walking tours in Roswell’s historic buildings such as Barrington Hall. There are lots of opportunities to share one’s talent in the area. I am involved in as many as five different productions at a time.
Is this your first time playing the part of Kris Kringle?
Yes! It is also the first and only beard I have ever grown! In an ideal world if there were a real Santa Claus, he would bring joy. I enjoy this character because he treats everyone with love and inspires people to treat others with love. That’s my favorite line from the musical, “Treat everyone with love.” In fact, the original title to Miracle on 34th Street was Here’s Love.
What other characters have you portrayed? I played the part of Maurice, Belle’s father in a local version of Beauty and the Beast. Bringing a cartoon character to life was interesting. Matching the well-known intonations and cadence was enjoyable. For the past four years I play a standardized patient for Emory Medical School in the clinical studies program. Doing anything by Shakespeare is my favorite. An actor can really bring a character to life. One of my favorite characters was Scrooge in a comedic version of A Christmas Carol. I enjoyed bringing his trajectory to life.
What do you enjoy most about the theater? I enjoy breathing life into a character. It is satisfying finding the human interest and the human character in
each part. I love being around other creative people in theater. The theater is blind to gender, body size or sexual preference. People bring and share their gifts. To work in that environment is wonderful. I enjoy interacting with the audience. People go to the theater to leave their troubles at the door. We hope to leave them better than when they came.
What do you like most about ACT1 Theater?
We nurture people who have little or no experience in acting at ACT1. The old sanctuary at the Alpharetta Presbyterian Church was converted into a theater over 20 years ago. It is an emotionally safe place where people can experience something new. We try to treat everyone with love. We do family friendly shows. Treat it as your local community theater and come see our shows. ■

Wondering about Women’s Fashion Subscription Boxes? Well I did, so I did some investigating. By SUZANNE PACEY

Gwynnie Bee $49 – $69 – $95/month. Gwynnie Bee is a monthly subscription service for sizes 10-32. Members receive unlimited access to a closet the size of a department store with unlimited free shipping each month. OVERALL IMPRESSION: H H H Very efficient customer service. I really like the way they try to match you with very specific style requests. I spent about 20 minutes personally speaking to my stylist, and she asked some great questions. I especially like how they size compare on their site. For example if you wear a size 12 in J.Jill, it will match you to the correct size in Items received from Gwynnie Bee. another brand. I received my first box, packaged very well, with three tops. You try the clothes out for 30 days. If I don’t like them, I return them in the postage paid bag they provided. INTERIOR DESIGN the FROSTING ON THE CAKE…
A
s owners of the design center, Tuscany Fine Furnishings, in our 13th year serving greater Atlanta, my wife Kathy and I, have often heard satisfied customers voice their high praise for various design projects, upon completion. Many of our 13,000 Facebook Shoppers, also leave kind comments and messages. But nothing captures the essence of true “client design gratification”, like TUSCANY customer, Bill Casement of Alpharetta, note sent to our awarding winning Designer, Cherri Campbell. So we asked him if we might share it with you. Hi Cherri, I wanted to express my great appreciation of your interior design skills that helped transform our home, we have lived in now for 29 years. What would a beautiful wedding cake be without the frosting and decoration… it would not be very desirable. Our recent home renovation, which covered all of the first floor of our home, has been described by those that have toured our home as being something you would see in one of those home beautiful magazines.
While the contractor did a good job with the actual construction work (think baking the cake) it was you, Cherri, that did a fantastic job for us. You started the process by getting to know us, the customer. You took the time to learn our likes and dislikes and how we used our home, our lifestyle. With that key information established you were right on target when it came to helping us pick out paint colors, tile, countertops, plumbing fixtures, lighting, mirrors, rugs, furniture and accessories ( think frosting and decoration). Cherri, you did a wonderful job of making our house into a beautiful home that we truly enjoy every day. You’re the icing on our cake! Dale and I love it and thank you! Bill Casement Alpharetta, GA ravo Cherri…Kat and I continue to be amazed with your passion for interior design…making transformations within living spaces uniquely suitable to each customers lifestyle! ■

Tips for traveling with pets over the holidays By DR. JOANNE ROESNER, DVM, DABVP Loving Hands Animal Hospital (Alpharetta) www.lovinghands.com
M
aking plans to bring our animal family members with us to distant events often comes up around the holidays. But this can be much less stressful with good preparation. If you are traveling by car, you can help your pet be less anxious by taking them on shorter drives before the holidays to get them used to the car ride. Be certain you have a sturdy crate or carrier that is large enough for your pet to move around in and which is escape-proof. For cats on long trips, consider using paper plates or aluminum foil baking pans to make a small litter box. Water and food dishes that attach to the crate can be used on longer trips. Proper identification on your pets during travel is a must. An automobile accident could inadvertently allow your pet to escape even if you are careful. A pet wearing a visible tag and having a microchip is more likely to be returned to you. I recommend both a collar, harness and two leashes if a pet must be removed from a car at rest stops. Soothing pet-friendly music (icalm dog, icalm cat) can be played to relax animals in the car.
Airline travel can be more anxiety-provoking for some pets with unfamiliar sights, sounds and sensations. Advanced preparation can definitely help here. Take your pet to the airport on a test run at some time other than peak travel seasons. Airline sound effects can be played in your home to allow your pet to become accustomed in a safe place. Luggage and other unfamiliar items can also be introduced while at home. Puppy pads or diapers will help keep your pet comfortable if they eliminate. Many airports now have pet elimination areas, which are listed on websites. Feed your pet lightly the day of travel and do not allow unlimited access to water prior to the flight or road trip. This will help to decrease your pet’s discomfort and anxiety. For pets who are very anxious, even with proper pre-travel preparation, light tranquilization may benefit them. Always discuss this with your veterinarian and use only drugs they recommend. If you need to medicate, always try a test dose of a drug prior to travel. Not all animals react the same to a given drug, and in some, dose adjustments may be required. ■
