Opening the doors to technology Crabapple Crossing teacher earns White House recognition By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@northfulton.com

Fourth grade teacher Heather Cox interacts with her students at Crabapple Crossing Elementary School on Friday, Dec. 6.
MILTON, Ga. – Heather Cox sees the classroom as an extension of the real world for her students, with technology and tradition aligning as partners – not adversaries. “In a perfect world, technology and instruction blend seamlessly,” said the fourthgrade teacher from Crabapple Crossing Elementary School. “Students are exploring and teachers are facilitating the learning…encouraging the students to think deeper and
challenge themselves.” Her work in advancing the use of technology in the classroom has garnered notice beyond her school and the school system. Cox recently returned from Washington, D.C., where she was recognized by President Barack Obama as a “Champion of Change” for creating instruction models for technology that can be used nationwide. “In an age when the world’s information is just a click away, we’ve got to bring our

Resident says 28-home development too dense Council to vote on issue Dec. 16 By SAVANNAH LEE news@northfulton.com MILTON, Ga. — Some residents are upset at a proposed development of 28 homes at the northeast corner of Bethany Bend and Cogburn Road, calling it too dense. At its Dec. 2 meeting, the Milton City Council heard the first presentation for plans to rezone the property from agricultural to a neighborhood unit plan. Arrowhead Real Estate Partners LLC is requesting the rezoning to allow them to build 28 single-family homes
Milton officials say the proposed 28-home development would look something like this rendering. The 9-acre plan contains a park on its west side, adjacent to Cogburn Road, and a natural buffer to the north. on 9 acres. That will be a density of 3.1 units per acre. At the meeting, Patricia Fredlund said this proposed development does not represent their vision for the city, and she’s unhappy with the way the
city has represented and proceeded with this project. This corner of land was one of the special treatment areas from the Ga. 9 North Visioning Study. As a special treatment area, a series
of meetings were held to discuss an agreement between neighbors, stakeholders and the developer as to how this land should be developed. Several meetings were held leading up to the final Ga. 9 North Visioning Study meeting was held. Nov. 6. However, the majority (13-2) of residents who participated in the visioning study reached a compromise of the project. The Planning Commission has recommended denial. Dot Blair, who owns an adjacent business, participated in the visioning study also has remained adamantly opposed. During these meetings, Blair has been vocal that 28 houses on 9 acres is

ATLANTA – Criminals often use the active holiday season to prey on unsuspecting victims for their own financial gain. During the holidays, cashiers can be distracted by long lines while consumers may be unmindful of their transactions when juggling purchases. These common errors open the door for both unauthorized credit card transactions and passing and receiving counterfeit currency. “Technology has forever changed the way we do business, making everyday financial transactions a prime target for fraud,” said Reginald G. Moore, special agent in charge

Cops tackle shoplifter ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Police tackled a man who allegedly was stealing coats from a mall department store Nov. 24. Two men were reported in the Sears store at North Point Mall taking coats valued between $149 and $179 each and placing them into plastic bags. The men then left the store without paying for the goods. When police arrived, they found one suspect in the parking lot, allegedly sneaking between cars to avoid police. One man was approached and tackled after he tried to flee. He fought with an officer, reportedly trying to reach into his pocket before finally succumbing to arrest. In his pocket were a can of pepper spray and a knife. Gary Eugene Goodsoon, 36, of Atlanta, was arrested for possession of tool to commit a crime, felony shoplifting and
of the U.S. Secret Service Atlanta field office. “The Secret Service, in conjunction with our many law enforcement partners, continues to successfully combat these crimes by adapting our investigative methodologies and educating the public.” Retailers and consumers should be wary of criminals attempting to steal or use stolen credit cards, credit card numbers or store gift cards. Retailers should continue to actively compare credit card signatures with photo IDs. Likewise, shoppers should visually inspect their currency before walking away from store registers
or bank tellers. Consumers should carefully scrutinize card transactions and statements to ensure their cards have not been compromised. If a retailer or consumer suspects a bill is counterfeit, they should compare the bill to a note of the same series and denomination that is known to be genuine. The note in question should display the proper watermark as well as the proper security thread that is consistent with that denomination. To help avoid becoming a victim of identity fraud, the best advice is to never provide personal information over the phone or the Internet to

$3K in jewels taken from home JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – A Brumbelow Road home was burgled Nov. 12 with $3,000 worth of jewelry reported stolen. The victim told police she had left the home in the morning and returned about 5 p.m. In her bedroom, she noticed the bed was moved and several plastic containers holding much of her jewelry were taken from a closet. In total, the jewels were valued at $3,000. There were no signs of forced entry to the home.
$4K card bills fraudulent MILTON, Ga. – A Milton resident is looking at a $4,000 bill after someone opened four credit cards in her name Nov. 25. The victim told police she received a notice from Equifax credit agency that a credit card was recently opened in her name. She said she had not opened any new cards. A check of her credit turned
Pot smoker on run after arrest ALPHARETTA, Ga. – One man was arrested and another is on the run after police allegedly found them Nov. 15 smoking marijuana in their car. According to police, an officer was on patrol in the Pointe at Preston Ridge apartments at 2:48 p.m. when he spotted two people in a parked car with its headlights on. The officer drove by and parked at the entrance to the neighborhood, waiting for the car to come out. It did not, so the officer returned and found the car had moved spots, but still had two people inside. Speaking with the men, Marquis K. Thompson, 21, of Zion Circle, Roswell, and Mikael Ford, 23, of Executive Drive, Alpharetta, the officer noted the smell of marijuana coming from the car. Both men said there was nothing illegal inside. A search of the car turned up a baggie allegedly

Thanksgiving Day business break-in CUMMING, Ga. — When a store manager went to open his business up after the Thanksgiving holiday, he found it had been broken into, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff’s incident report. On Nov. 29, the store
manager of R.E. Michel Company, 1015 Union Center Drive, told deputies he arrived for work at about 7:30 a.m. He said he found the glass window next to the front door shattered. He cleared the business and saw the cash register had been forced open. Someone had taken the cash drawer along with $400 in cash. The manager said the business closed at 5 p.m. Nov. 27 and stayed closed until that morning. The manager said because of where the suspect entered the building, the motion detectors should have activated the alarm. The store has no security cameras, but the neighboring store may be able to provide their footage.

As the grade-level chair, Cox helped implement the “Bring Your Own Technology” initiative at Crabapple Crossing last year. The pilot program, currently in place at a handful of Fulton schools, allows students to use smartphones, tablets and other devices as supplements to school resources. “The BYOT pilot is still very new to us,” said Cox. “We began last year, starting with only one classroom for a few months, before expanding…[to now include] fourth and fifth
Council: Continued from Page 1 too dense and not consistent with their vision for Milton. Blair, an active participant at all the special treatment discussions, said this property has been a contention for a long time. Blair said she’s not the only community member upset that the city wants to rezone this plot of land for the purpose of building 28 houses, despite
tree lighting. The tree lighting ceremony, at the corner of Ga. 9 and Webb Road, included musical performances with Milton’s Mayor Joe Lockwood
and councilmembers counting down to the big moment. After the tree was lit, jolly St. Nick was driven in by fire truck to the tune of “Here Comes

grades.” She said teachers and staff are still learning what works best and how to use the technology to transform instruction, but early signs are positive. “It’s hard not to notice an impact when students realize they can receive instant feedback on their progress, [or] when they see statistics on how many visitors they’ve had to a website they designed, and their face lights up with excitement,” she said. Cox also began an afterschool technology club for students and serves on the school system’s vanguard technology team. Through the pilot program, she learned valuable lessons regarding how quickly change should be implemented. “The biggest lesson I’ve personally learned is not everyone is ready for this new frontier. Instead of simply throwing everyone into the deep end and hope they swim, the best approach is to let people – both teachers and parents – try to

get used to these new waters little by little,” said Cox. But she knows the technology train has left the station, and schools must adjust to the realities of the world around them. While Fulton Schools is taking expansion of the BYOT program slowly, Cox says the lack of devices in a student’s home, or in the classroom, should not be a deterrent to using technology in the classroom. “I advise teachers to take a lesson from TV mentor, Tim Gunn, and ‘Make it work!’” Cox said, laughing. “You have three
desktop computers and that’s it? OK, let’s figure out what we can do with that. You are unable to bring your own device? OK, here’s mine or share with a friend.” But the bottom line is teachers must reach and teach children through all available methods, she said. “Technology in education is quickly becoming a necessity, as opposed to a luxury,” said Cox. “[It] does not replace highquality traditional teaching methods. Instead, it should enhance the incredible work that teachers are already doing.”
her repeated calls against the density. According to the subcommittee meeting’s report, “all but two members of the stakeholder group who were present agreed that this proposal [the 28 units on 9 acres] was a significant improvement over initial proposals.” A proposed assisted living facility had problems had been opposed by residents. The new plan “largely met community concerns” and the proposed site plan and concept design were therefore acceptable, subject to working out
the details. Additionally, the report states, “It should be noted that acceptance of the site and concept plan was not a vote of approval for the final design, but rather an indication that the proposal is a reasonable basis for moving forward.” Blair still contends the city has failed to keep their commitment to enforce the agreed terms of zoning for that property. Last month, Blair spoke at the Planning Commission meeting Nov. 20 to express her opinion on the development.
She said she fears that if this land is rezoned and the land developed, it will establish a legal precedent for future developments that are inconsistent with the citizens’ vision of Milton. “To date, the city has failed to address the stakeholders’ concerns and the clock in running out. The city’s actions have only compounded the community’s suspicions,” Blair said. This project goes before City Council on Dec. 16 for final discussion and a council’s vote.

Police substation added to Alpharetta Elementary Officers to increase safety, form relationships with students By CAITLIN WAGENSEIL caitlin@northfulton.com

ALPHARETTA, Ga. – In order to further protect students at Alpharetta Elementary School, a new police substation was added to allow for more officers to be on hand, as well as provide a place for students to go when they need help. On Monday, Dec. 2, a ribbon cutting was held at the school, 192 Mayfield Road, to officially open the substation. City officials in attendance included Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle, Fulton County Board of Education Member Katie Reeves and Alpharetta Public Safety Director Gary George. “As important as it is to make sure our schools are high quality, we have to make sure that they’re safe,” Belle Isle said. “This will provide that safe environment.” Alpharetta Police Officer Phillip Ritchey had the idea for a police substation after the deadly shootings that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., last December. Ritchey said that all Alpharetta schools have a police officer on site except for the elementary schools. “They have SRO (Student Resource Officer) signs, but officers aren’t there at all hours,” he said. “Now, police will always be coming in and out of the school.” The substation is located

at the front of the school, and while no police officers will permanently be stationed there, it will provide a place for them to use when they need to. “We have over 100 officers that are employed in the city. Detectives can use this space, traffic officers can use it to finish reports—just as many people as we can fit to help boost the presence of police,” Ritchey said. He added that a marked police car will always sit outside of the school. In addition to providing more security, the substation will allow for students to familiarize themselves with the officers. “It establishes relationships—if anything should ever happen, the students will know a police officer that they can go to when they need help. It’s a wonderful opportunity and we’re very excited about it,” said AES Principal Adam Maroney. And Ritchey said it’s important for students to have that contact with police on a regular basis. “It’s good to expose them to us at a young age so they understand that they can always come to us,” he said. “And so they know we won’t come arrest them if they’re not doing their homework.” As for the future, Reeves said other school systems may follow suit and also add on police substations. “If this works out, I think we could see other schools doing the same thing, because this really is an outside the box effort to keep our students safe,” she said.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The volunteers and students at Stand Up for Kids received an early Christmas gift Dec. 4 – a check worth $19,000 from the Country Club of Roswell. The money comes from a charity tournament the club held specifically to raise funds for the non-profit. Stand Up for Kids is a national
program to help at-risk and homeless youths in schooling and in life, to help them get their lives back on track. The North Fulton arm of the group is based in Independence High School in Alpharetta and began in 2008. It has since expanded into North Springs, Roswell and Cambridge high schools. “I was tired of going downtown all the time, said Sue Levine, who started the North Fulton Stand Up for Kids. “There is a huge need here [in North Fulton]. It’s wonderful to be able to help kids here in our backyard.

She is solely responsible for finding our dream home and negotiating a great deal for us. Without her, we would of never found the home that we purchased. You’re going to see real estate done differently next year. We want to simplify the transaction. DAN FORSMAN, president and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, Georgia Properties

‘Real estate done differently’ with new brand Berkshire Hathaway is new face of Prudential Realty By ALDO NAHED aldo@northfulton.com ATLANTA — Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices is the new name and real estate franchise brand of Prudential Georgia Realty, one of Atlanta’s largest and most respected residential real estate brokerage firms. This week marks the conversion from Prudential Georgia Realty to Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, Georgia Properties. Dan Forsman, president and chief executive officer, will continue in his current role running the day-to-day operations along with the executive leadership team and managing brokers. “You’re going to see real estate done differently next year,” Forsman said. “We want to simplify the transaction. We’re going to do it, and I’m privileged to lead it.” Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices is the second-largest, full-service independent residential real estate brokerage firm and one of the largest brokerage-owned settlement services provider in the U.S. Last year, HomeServices became the majority owner in HSF Affiliates LLC, which operates the Prudential Real Estate franchise network. Soon after, the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices brand was launched. Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, has 1,100 associates and 22 offices across the greater metro area of Atlanta. This acquisition represents an expansion of HomeServices’ footprint in the Atlanta market along with Harry Norman Realtors, which HomeServices acquired in 2006. With this transaction, HomeServices has 28 brands and more than 17,000

Berkshire Hathaway, the worldwide holding company based in Omaha, Neb., and led by Chairman and CEO Warren Buffett, is ranked by Barron’s as one of the world’s 100 most respected companies. Berkshire Hathaway owns more than 55 companies and employs more than 300,000 people. “This transaction makes us an even stronger organization,” said Forsman. “We will be unmatched in our ability to serve the real estate needs of new and existing clients throughout Atlanta.” An important new element added to Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, Georgia Properties is its luxury collection division, focusing on the highestend estates, landmark homes, magnificent residences and properties, in particular throughout Buckhead and the Northside area.
Forsman said the legacy of the company is secured by the performance of the past and the future “is very bright.” “They are the most admired company in the world,” Forsman said. “The resources that Berkshire Hathaway brings to the table, coupled with their brand name and the consumer awareness will launch us to heights we’ve never seen.” Forsman said the focus is to double the market share of the company in Atlanta through increased per person productivity and higher level of customer service. “We are going to do that,” he said. Ron Peltier, chairman and CEO of HomeServices, said Forsman’s leadership and commitment to his agents, employees and customers has guided Prudential Georgia Realty to its position as one of the largest companies within
the Prudential network. Throughout this week, several events are being held to commemorate the new company, formerly Prudential Georgia Realty. On Dec. 9, about 1,000 agents gathered at the High Museum in Atlanta for a celebration. The following day, ribbon-cutting ceremonies were held at branches throughout the state. Lisa Swayne, of the Butler Swayne team, was part of the big launch. Swayne is thrilled with the new association. “To be associated with Prudential was a great connection in Atlanta and to merge with Berkshire Hathaway is fantastic,” Swayne said. “We work with a lot of executives in Atlanta and the connection is a privilege to be associated with success. It makes us feel good.”

Housing demand remains strong Making health care decisions Most people don’t think about putting their home on the market in December, or even January for that matter. But prospective home sellers may want to reconsider, with inventory low and demand remaining strong in our area. For the beginning of December, the inventory of single-family homes is down 9 percent in North Fulton and flat in Forsyth County from this time last year. Seasonally, this is typical as there are fewer buyers looking over the winter period so fewer homeowners list or leave their home on the market. But when we look at demand (pending sales and past sales), home sellers may want to reconsider putting their home on the market now or immediately after the first of the year. In December 2012, there were 214 homes sold in North Fulton and at the beginning of this month, there were already 414 properties under contract. Similarly, last December there were 223 homes sold in Forsyth County with 497 under contract at the begin-

ning of this month. We won’t know what the final sales numbers will be for December 2013, but it is safe to say they will far outpace the previous year. Between current demand and the prospect of more competition from a surge in new construction next spring, January looks like a seller’s sweet spot for hitting the market. BASEMENT? CRACKED FOUNDATION?
Now that the Affordable Health Care Act is a law, have you evaluated your health care options for your small business? Have you taken the time to identify if you need to make a change? The recent problems with the health care exchange have small business owners with 50 or more employees scrambling to make decisions on the best options to provide health care benefits for their employees. On the day before Thanksgiving, it was announced that small businesses would not be able to buy health insurance via HealthCare.gov. The delay in functionality for the Internet-based SHOP (Small Business Health Options Program) system represents the latest setback in the efforts to implement the three-year-old Affordable Care Act. So what can you do? Small business owners that want to take advantage of the available tax credits will now have to sign up with either an insurance agent or broker, or directly with a health insurance company. Because this takes a lot of time to evaluate, it is forcing many small

business owners to renew their current plan early. Small businesses with 50 or more employees have until Dec. 23 to choose a health plan that will be in effect on Jan. 1 to comply with the law. This doesn’t represent a lot of time if you were counting on the exchange to be up and running as advertised. Small business owners need to understand the law, evaluate their options, select the best course of action for now and take action before the deadlines. Hopefully in a year, the online systems will be working as intended, and this process will be easier to understand and utilize.

What is a cataract and what is cataract surgery? Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss in people over 40 and today cataracts affect more than 22 million Americans age 40 and older. At some point in our life, we will all develop a cataract. The natural lens of the eye yellows and becomes cloudy with age as a result of biological changes of the proteins inside the lens. The function of the human lens is to focus incoming light onto the back of the eye. As your lens ages, light from the outside worlds becomes more and more distorted as it enters your eye. Difficulty reading, needing more light to read, experiencing glare and haloes at night and, even poor sleep patterns can be explained by cataract formation. The treatment for cataracts involves a painless, 10 minute surgery to remove the “clouded
lens” or “cataract” and replace it with a man made intraocular lens implant. It is the most common surgical procedure in the US and around the world and is considered to be an extremely successful and safe procedure with a success rate approaching 99.5%. What is laser cataract surgery? With traditional cataract surgery, all the steps of the surgery are customarily performed “manually” by the surgeon using handheld tools. Laser cataract surgerythe next evolution of cataract surgery with the Ziemer Z6 laser offers a greater amount of precision, predictability and safety to these steps leading improved visual outcomes and more precise targets. With the Ziemer Z6 Laser System, your surgeon can offer you un-
matched accuracy and a more predictable and customized cataract procedure. Based on your medical history and pre-operative evaluation, you and your surgeon will discuss the options available for your desired visual result. Together you can discuss a treatment plan which may include using the LDV Z6 to create the precise laser incisions in the cornea along with an advanced lens implant that may allow for improved near, intermediate or distance vision. This tailored treatment may reduce your need for glasses or contact lenses after surgery. How is laser cataract surgery different from traditional cataract surgery? In traditional cataract surgery, incisions in the cornea are made using handheld instruments including blades
to access the cataract. Your surgeon will then use a surgical device to manually create a circular opening in the lens capsule of the eye that holds the cataract. The Ziemer Z6 laser can be used to make the corneal incisions precise and the opening in the lens capsule as circular as possible, in the right location, and sized to fit the replacement lens. Your surgeon can also use the laser to break up and soften the hard cataract. Softening the lens with the laser enables your surgeon to then remove the cataract more gently and with significantly less ultrasound energy than is used in traditional manual cataract surgery. What are the benefits of laser cataract surgery? • A highly customized treatment
• A treatment with little or no discomfort • A more precise and predictable treatment • A gentler and easier cataract removal • Generally, a more rapid visual recovery due to reduced inflammation The opportunity to receive tailored treatment with advanced technology multi-focal lenses, which may reduce the need for glasses or contacts after surgery Am I a suitable candidate for laser cataract surgery? Your surgeon and you will decide whether you are a suitable candidate based on your eye anatomy, type of cataract and type of lens implant that you desire. Most patients are candidates for having some of

ADHD – not just in children anymore Adult ADHD is associated with multiple comorbidities such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and other personality disorders. Adult ADHD is a valid psychiatric disorder of adulthood distinct from these other conditions. Adult attention deficit disorder differs from the childhood variant because the hyperactivity in adults may be replaced by other symptoms such as anxiety, impulsivity and inattentiveness. In fact, prior to 2002 there were no diagnostic guidelines, but there have been great advances since. Some of the symptoms that characterize Adult ADHD are:
ADHD is a relatively common psychiatric disorder among adults. The prevalence is thought to be 3.5%-5.3%, which accounts for more than 11 million cases in the United States alone. With increased public awareness, adult ADHD became a topic of great interest so clinicians should be able to diagnose, treat, and manage patients with this disorder. Etiology is still uncertain. Genetics however is believed to play a prominent role, followed in importance by acquired injuries to the brain. ADHD was widely thought to be strictly a disorder of childhood. Now there are numerous scientific papers and clinical trials that acknowledge the existence of an adult version of this disorder, which can be traced back to the younger years. Before this time ADHD in adults was known as Minimal Brain Damage or Dysfunction (MBD).
1. Often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in school-work, work or other activities. 2. Often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities. 3. Often does not seem to listen when spoke to directly. 4. Often does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores or duties in the workplace (not due to oppositional behavior or failure to understand directions) 5. Often has difficulty organizing tasks and activities. 6. Often avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort (such as schoolwork or homework)Often loses things necessary for tasks and activities (eg. School assignments, pencils, keys) 7. Is often easily distracted by extraneous stimuli. PAID ADVERTORIAL
8. Is often forgetful in daily activities.
Some children with ADHD continue to have it as adults. And many adults who have the disorder don’t know it. They may feel that it is impossible to get organized, keep a job, or remember and keep appointments. Daily tasks such as getting up in the morning, preparing to leave the house for work, arriving at work on time, and being productive on the job can be especially challenging for adults with ADHD. These adults may have a history of failure at school, problems at work, failed relationships and traffic accidents. Like teens, adults with ADHD may seem restless and may try to complete several tasks as once, most of them unsuccessfully. They also tend to prefer “quick fixes,” rather than taking the steps needed to achieve greater rewards. Treatment is very rewarding. The first medications to be approved by the FDA belonged to a non-stimulant group of medications: Atomoxetine. The FDA later approved stimulants such as methylphenidate and mixed amphetamine salts. Group delivered cognitive behavioral therapy is recommended in some cases as a supportive treatment. If you or someone you know may have Adult ADHD, call Johns Creek Family Medicine at 770-771-6591 and schedule an appointment with Dr. Zack Charkawi.

Say “No” to Fad Diets By Lisa Graham, RN, BSN, CDE, Northside Hospital Diabetes and Nutrition Education Program Remember the fable of the tortoise and the hare? The moral is that slow and steady wins the race. Turns out, that age-old wisdom applies to weight loss too. Fad diets often fail because dieters are prone to regain the weight when they inevitably return to their old eating habits. Success, as nutritionists will tell us time and time again, is a result of lifestyle changes and smart food choices. There is no “miracle” weight-loss plan when it comes to long-term, sustainable weight loss. Recognizing Fads If you’re aiming to shed some pounds, and don’t know where to start, there are plenty of credible resources out there, but it’s important to know how to decipher fact from fiction. When it comes to recognizing “fad” diets, there are several red flags. One, avoid any diet that eliminates entire food groups. Incorporating a variety of foods is necessary for good health, and any diet that teaches you otherwise isn’t teaching you the fundamentals of good eating habits. On the other hand, vegetarian and vegan diet plans can be very healthy, but consult with a nutritionist before diving in to ensure that all your nutrient requirements will be met. Two, pass on any diet trend that claims you can “trick” your body’s metabolism into burning more calories. There are only two ways you can “trick” your body into burning more calories: a healthy diet and routine exercise. And lastly, ignore any diet that promises dramatic weight-loss that’s fast and easy. Healthy weight loss requires patience and hard work. Any diet telling you otherwise is just blowing hot air. Keep the WeightOff for Good If you’re serious about weight loss, ignore the hype. Follow the tips below to get back into shape for life. Go slowly. When you’re making small, meaningful changes, the weight will come off slowly, but it’ll likely stay off because you’re building good habits rather than crash dieting. Healthy, sustainable weight loss for most people is about 1-2 pounds per week. Losing more than a couple of pounds per week is typically neither healthy nor sustainable, and the weight lost is typically water weight, not body weight Don’t starve yourself. Eat just 300 to 500 calories under what you burn each day. If you start

cutting too many calories, your metabolism slows down to protect fat stores in expectation of a long period of food deprivation. Eat only when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full. Many people lose weight just by paying attention to this one tip. Get your Zzz’s. Studies show that sleep deprivation increases levels of a hunger hormone, which may lead to overeating. 5 Get moving. No fad diet on earth can replace the weight-loss wonders that routine exercise has to offer. You’ll not only burn calories during the activity but you’ll also build muscle, which will help you burn even more calories over time. surgery and the Ziemer Z6 platform was FDA cleared in 2013. What should I expect on the day of surgery? Your day in surgery should be no different than a routine cataract case. The Ziemer Z6 laser is positioned next to the surgeon and is utilized seamlessly during the cataract surgery process. You will be given mild IV sedation that will likely keep you pleasantly unaware of the goings on in surgery. There is no pain, needles or stitches as part of the procedure. What should I expect after surgery?
After surgery, you can generally expect your vision to be improved within 24 hours. Generally, patients experience no pain after surgery. Slight scratchiness of the eye is common and they prescribed eye drops will help with any of these symptoms. Many patients return to work or normal activities the next day and even drive themselves to their post-op day one appointment! How long does the procedure take? You can expect to be at our center for2 hours. And you will be in the procedure room for 20-25 minutes. Call Milan Eye Center at 678-381-2020 for more information.

What’s your hearing fingerprint? Dr. Deborah Woodward Johns Creek Audiology & Hearing Center No two fingerprints are alike. No two snowflakes are alike. Everyone’s DNA is unique and personal. And believe it or not, the same goes for your hearing. The way you hear is shaped by many things, starting with the unique physiology of your ear. But it does not end there. Hearing is also shaped by life experiences, lifestyle, and your individual physical and mental makeup. A musician listening for harmonies and rhythms; a football player listening for signals over the roar of a stadium; or a parent identifying their child’s voice in the school play – all have different hearing preferences, even if their hearing, as measured by a medical audiogram, “looks” identical. This uniqueness becomes especially important to people coping with a hearing loss. While they all need amplification, they need to apply it in different ways based on the unique way they live and hear. Why basic hearing instruments fall short The reason that mail order hearing “devices” are so unsatisfying is that the “one-sound-fits-all” design actually fits NO ONE! Some may offer a few adjust-
ments that can change the amplification but they can only go so far. Speech may sound “tinny” or mechanical at times with these devices and you will have trouble distinguishing speech from background noise or locating the source of sound in a room. Think of eyeglasses with the wrong prescription. The frames may fit your face well but your vision is blurry. The right hearing instrument is as unique as you are Think of it as a micro-brain that works in harmony with your own brain to differentiate sounds based on your unique hearing profile. An advanced wireless signal processing system supports features that guard speech, help you focus your hearing, orient you in a room, and more. “Unique” begins with you Advanced new technology is still only part of the story. Milton senior holds book drive for children in need MILTON, Ga. – Caroline Filan, a senior honor student at Milton High School, made a difference in the life of a child as part of this year’s Make a Difference Day, Oct. 26, the largest national day of community service in the U.S. By partnering with Assistance League of Atlanta, she established a book drive at Milton High School that generated more than 320 books that are now in the hands of Atlanta area children. For the second year, Assistance League of Atlanta participated in the USA Today Weekend newspaper’s Make a Difference Day by collecting more than 3,650 new and gently used books to elementary and middle school children in Atlanta and DeKalb
County schools. Many of these children received the first book that they can call their own and take home to read. Assistance League of Atlanta is an all-volunteer organization that helps more than 50,000 area children and adults in need rebuild their lives and become more self-sufficient.

What’s with all the bulldozers in Milton? I want to talk about all the sudden construction and development we’re seeing around Milton. I know it seems like neighborhoods are popping up overnight, and I’ve been asked by many citizens why the city isn’t stopping the growth. I’ve even had comments asking “if we need to vote in new folks on city council?” I wish it was that simple. If we had a magic button we could push and everything would stay the same, I, as well as city council, would! When I first moved to what is now Milton, it felt like we were way out in the country. We rode our horses up and down the street and through hundreds of acres that are now developed. I remember sitting outside and hearing nothing but the breeze and birds. Things have changed over the last 20 years, and I cannot do any of that now. The good and bad news is that Milton is a great place to live. We have quality schools, beautiful neighborhoods, proximity to good companies with great jobs, golf courses, horse farms, athletic facilities for our kids, etc. Believe me, I can go on and on. Milton was even named “best quality of life” in Georgia and ninth highest in the southeast by the Business Journals’ On Numbers Survey. This kind of honor just fuels the desire of people wanting to move here, as we all have chosen to do so at some point. That said, here is the reality of the situation: The change seems so sudden because of pent-up demand. What you are seeing is the result of about five years of demand that could not be fulfilled because of the collapse of credit markets. Normally, this development would hap-
JOE LOCKWOOD Milton Mayor pen more gradually. However, regional economic recovery means a groundswell of activity. Individual property rights are essential to our way of life. The City of Milton cannot, and would not, ever force a property owner into a decision that negatively affects the value of their land. If a property owner wants to sell acreage to a developer, they are free to do so. Developers buy the land because people want to live on that land. This is the free market system. This is not just happening in Milton. All across the region new residential development is popping up. Milton is very attractive to homebuyers for the exact same reasons you love the city: good schools, ample land, and good opportunity. Milton cannot absolutely stop all development. This is impossible. If we try, we will be sued and we will lose. And on top of losing, we will waste millions in tax money fighting lawsuits. Milton has tools in place to influence development – but some are voluntary. Our form-based code and comprehensive plan will keep heavy development contained to identified areas. But transfer of development rights, placing large swaths of greenspace in protective zones in exchange for heavier development in commercially viable areas, is voluntary. We cannot force this tool onto land owners. If a development follows
the letter and intent of our laws – if it conforms to the stringent standards the community approved through our various zoning tools – its owner will be allowed to build without City Council oversight. For example, if a new neighborhood goes into land zoned AG-1 (agricultural use) and is broken up into one-acre lots (a standard) with one home that meets our building codes, that case will not come before City Council. Please understand: We are certainly aware of the development because of city staff reporting to us daily, but we have no legal decision to make. Finally, change is inevitable. Milton’s population doubled from 2000 to 2010. Every plan we’ve created since incorporation in 2006 contemplated population growth. This is nothing new, and it is nothing unexpected. The option we are left with is managing that growth so that what makes Milton unique is not lost. I understand that many of us would like to “close the door and lock it once we are here,” but because of the facts above we cannot do that. Here’s the ironic thing: I often hear citizens from one development or neighborhood chastise property owners next door who consider selling. But I’m sure in the past the same property owner contemplating selling thought the exact same thing about the land next to them. That’s just life. I am not saying living in an apartment, townhouse, cluster home, neighborhood, horse farm, agricultural land, on a golf course or in a country club is any better or worse. I believe diversity is what makes Milton a great place to live! What can we do to preserve our city and keep the balance?
Finally, change is inevitable. Milton’s population doubled from 2000 to 2010. Every plan we’ve created since incorporation in 2006 contemplated population growth. This is nothing new, and it is nothing unexpected. The option we are left with is managing that growth so that what makes Milton unique is not lost. The only way I know of is by all working together. Step one is to embrace quality development, but more importantly, spread the word and encourage people to accept the rural lifestyle for which our city is known. Now this lifestyle is certainly a reality for only a small percentage of our population. But the “feel” of Milton, that rural quality, is something that attracted most of us. Next, instead of sitting back and watching all the property that can be legally developed disappear, encourage people you know to consider buying property and living on it rather than purchasing a new home. Next time you see a 10-acre property for sale, consider getting two or three of your neighbors to go in and buy it. You’ll save the land by building and living on a larger piece of property, thereby preserving the look and feel we love. Right now the housing market is good so it is not hard to sell an existing home. Talk up living on larger acreage with people considering Milton. I understand this may
sound unrealistic at first, but for the same price as an upscale home you can still find a 3- to 5-acre lot with an older, modest home on it. Now keep in mind you will have to make some sacrifices in living space, as my family did for 17 years. But there are many upsides as well. I can tell you all kinds of stories of sharing one bathroom with a family of five, or having your youngest use the living room for a bedroom. We’ve had the well go out. We’ve even had to keep 50-plus three year olds from going near the eggs in the «mud»(code for septic troubles) at our Easter egg hunt. But I will tell you my family wouldn›t trade it for anything! I challenge us all to join the cause and keep Milton what it was rather than sit on the sidelines frustrated with «all the bulldozers!” If only a minority of citizens pitch in, the majority of citizens will benefit. And please know I’m always available to listen. Our staff is always available to listen. And to me, that’s the best thing Milton can offer right now.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR »
Resident asks for toy drive donations Four years ago, on Dec. 14, 2009, my stepson and his wife gave birth to a baby girl, Lillie Kay Kimsey. Lillie Kay was born with Hydrocephalus, or fluid on the brain, and died just five days later at the Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tenn., the only home Lillie Kay knew. We buried her just three days before Christmas. In an effort to not let Lillie Kay’s short life be in vain, my stepson and his wife started having an annual toy drive in Lillie Kay’s name for Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital and all the children who are there for Christmas. The toys are delivered to the hospital on Lillie Kay’s birthday. Last year, 1,024 toys and books were delivered to the hospital on what would have been Lillie Kay’s third birthday. In 2013, they filed the legal paperwork and officially created the Lillie Kay Foundation. This year, the board of directors of the Lillie Kay Foundation (on which I serve) want to make the fourth annual Lillie Kay’s Toy Drive bigger and better
than ever. And we’re doing it in memory of the precious little baby girl my family never had a chance to watch grow up. We’ve expanded the drive and are collecting and distributing new toys to three hospitals in three states, all which have a special meaning to the Kimsey Family. The Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.; Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital in Atlanta (where all the toys I collect will be donated); and the Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital in Pennsylvania. But I need your help and generosity once again. I am going to collect new toys between now and Dec. 13. Toys can be for newborns – teenage years, both boys and girls. I’m setting a small goal of being able to fill my car with new toys and books; however, I’m hoping I need to rent a U-Haul truck to bring all those toys to Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital in Atlanta on Dec. 14. I’m asking you to open your wallets and your
hearts once again to help us do something wonderful for children who are ill during the holidays – in this case, for three entire children’s hospitals and all the precious, small patients who will be there this holiday season. Would you please consider sending me a new toy? I want Lillie Kay’s Toy Drive in 2013 to be the biggest year yet. I know my friends, family, co-workers and your generosity in the past, and I know you won’t let me down. This quote appeared on my computer one day, and I think it’s very fitting. “The things you do for yourself are gone when you are gone, but the things you do for others remain as your legacy.” – Kalu Ndukwe Kalu Thank you for your consideration in continuing to help us keep Lillie Kay’s legacy alive. TAMMI KIMSEY Milton

CITY OF MILTON NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARINGS FOR A TEXT AMENDMENT TO THE ZONING ORDINANCE
Starting off season strong MILTON, Ga. — Cambridge High School’s varsity wrestling program showed a dual team record of 14 wins and six losses for November. The 14 wins match the win total of the entire 20122013 season. There are 12 duals remaining for 2013-2014 year. Last year, the Cambridge varsity wrestling program posted a winning record and was crowned state champion. Hence, the Bears’

wrestling program is on the map and the expectations this year are high. Some of last year’s contributors will be competing again, including state champion J.R. Salemi, who is 14-0, and area champion Brandon Filosi, who is 20-0. Returning starters Chris Anderson, Eric Cizek, Brock Neilson and Kryshna Tanksley are also posting winning records and making significant contributions. New additions Will Britain and Devin Kane hold 15-0 and 20-0 records respectively. – Shubhi Tangri
such as those in downtown Atlanta, they are living on couches or in cars. The North Fulton initiative keeps these kids from ending up on the streets, said Levine. Despite difficult family situations, many of the children still want to succeed academically. The program helps 25 students. “There is a constant need,” said Kelly Fields, executive director of Stand Up for Kids, Atlanta.
“There is not a single school that does not have homeless or at-risk students. We create a foundation for them to carry themselves through their difficulties.” The donated money will support monthly stipends Stand Up for Kids gives their students. REGION REALIGNMENT – 2014 »
Northview moves up to AAAAAA
By MIKE BLUM news@northfulton.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — The Georgia High School Association has released its preliminary region assignments for the 2014-16 seasons, with some changes to each of the regions including teams from North Fulton. Region 6-AAAAAA is scheduled to add two schools, with Northview moving up from AAAAA as expected. Habersham Central, which has played in 7-AAAAAA the past two seasons, is being switched to Region 6, making it a 10-school region, equally divided between North Fulton schools and nonNorth Fulton schools. Habersham Central is the lone school from northeast Georgia in the AAAAAA classification and has one of the smallest attendance numbers among
AAAAAA schools. The Raiders went 1-19 in football the past two seasons in Region 7, considered the state’s strongest. If Habersham winds up in Region 6 after the appeals process, the teams in the region would be limited to one nonregion game each. Northview, which has played the last two seasons at the AAAAA level, joins Alpharetta, Centennial, Chattahoochee, Johns Creek and four Forsyth schools in the region. Region 5-AAAAAA, which includes Milton and Roswell, will add a ninth school next season, as Pope moves up from AAAAA. Pope, which has played previously in the largest classification, will be one of the smallest AAAAAA schools in the state. Cambridge remains in Region 7-AAAAA, which loses Northview, Pope and Osborne to AAAAAA and adds North Atlanta and River Ridge. North Atlanta played in Region 6 the past two seasons with schools in DeKalb County, while River
You never know what tomorrow brings...
Ridge moves up from AAAA. The region goes from 11 schools to 10. Blessed Trinity’s region is undergoing considerable change in Class AAA, with the region shifted from a North Georgia designation to South Georgia. After playing in Region 6, Blessed Trinity will now be in Region 4, with Decatur and Westminster remaining with BT in one of the two subregions. Atlanta public schools Douglass, Therrell and Washington will be in the sub-region with Blessed Trinity, along with Coretta Scott King, a new allgirls high school. All four Class A private schools from North Fulton will remain in the same subregion. Mount Pisgah, King’s Ridge, Fellowship Christian and St. Francis will all be in Region 6-A sub-region with Walker and Pinecrest Academy. Pinecrest replaces Whitefield Academy, which moves to Region 5. Pinecrest played the last two seasons in Region 8. St. Francis will play a region schedule in football for the first time in 2014. Schools can appeal their region assignments, with the final region alignments to be announced in January.
Starbursts win softball championship MILTON, Ga. – The Starbursts girls’ softball team won its championship game Nov. 5 against the Blue Angles with a score of 14-11, capping off a fun season for all of the girls. The Starbursts led the entire game, thanks to their consistently strong offense and solid defense. Every player had at least one hit, and the team’s great clutch hitting resulted in seven out of the 14 runs coming after two outs. The Blue Angels were strong competitors and
rallied with five runs in the last inning to make the game a season-ending “nail biter.” The Starbursts are Addison, Emily, Jackie, Jessica, Julia, Libby, MacKenzie, Missy and Sara. The team thanked head coaches Shep and Kelli Tapasek, pitcher Jon Marks, assistant coaches Brad Comer, Will Driver and Jeff Burleson and coach Calvin Brown, who lent his expertise to the team, even though he didn’t have a child on the team.

Adult Girl Scout volunteers needed Organization raises awareness about lack of leaders By CAITLYN WALTERS walters@northfulton.com
no cost to play a sponsor role in our girls’ lives,” Nirenberg said. “We have to have two non-related adults per troop who can also pass a criminal background check.” Nirenberg said the wide range of activities offer the girls and their volunteers the stable environment to explore their interests without limitations. Girl Scouts provides the leadership training, which is a program based on charities and course guides. After training, the volunteers form a troop and start meeting at a time convenient to their busy schedules. Nirenberg said they can meet as often as once a week to twice a month. “The times they meet are up to them,” Nirenberg said. “We try to allow the volunteers that flexibility.” Even if a leadership role seems too demanding at first, Nirenberg said they have designed the role “troop helper”
to allow volunteers to experience the troop life without the full responsibilities. “It’s almost like an internship,” Nirenberg said. “We have opportunities for someone who may not want to take on the leadership role in the beginning to mentor and work with other troops to see if that’d be something they are interested in.” Nirenberg said adult volunteers also receive awards like their troop girls. Roban Everett of Alpharetta received the Pioneer Award for more than seven years of invaluable service in North Fulton. “From the beginning, we have opportunities for adults to be recognized and thanked,” Nirenberg said. “We also have a great networking capacity because we hold monthly meetings for our adult volunteers.” For more information, visit www.gsgatl.org.

CUMMING, Ga. — Behind every great Girl Scout stands a great adult volunteer who sponsored her. There are thousands of girls eager to join the program, but the number of adult volunteers to facilitate it is low. That is why Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta has asked those men and women who wish to have a positive impact on the lives of girls to volunteer. The membership specialist, Sabrina Nirenberg, said volunteering is not only an opportunity to help girls gain self-confidence and critical thinking skills, but empower them to think they can make a difference in their community. “We are in need of volunteers who are willing to be committed and go through the training that we provide at

Reader Advisory: The National Trade Association we belong to has purchased the following classifieds. Determining the value of their service or product is advised by this publication. In order to avoid misunderstandings, some advertisers do not offer employment but rather supply the readers with manuals, directories and other materials designed to help their clients establish mail order selling and other businesses at home. Under NO circumstance should you send any money in advance or give the client your checking, license identification or credit card numbers. Also beware of ads that claim to guarantee loans regardless of credit and note that if a credit repair company does business only over the phone it’s illegal to request any money before delivering its service. All funds are based in U.S. dollars. 800 numbers may or may not reach Canada.
