King’s Ridge advances on campus expansion By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — King’s Ridge Christian School is taking steps to keep student-athletes from having to travel off-campus to other courts and fields in the community. In December, King’s Ridge used funds from its Be Bold capital campaign to purchase the final two pieces of contiguous property next to the school’s campus off Bethany Bend. The campaign is part of an effort to raise money for campus improvements that are not part of its annual operating budget. King’s Ridge Director of Advancement Sharon Hurst said the purchase includes the former 17-acre Roadrunner baseball complex on Cogburn Road for $2.2 million as well as another 2 acres from the Founding Faith Worship Center for $400,000. The properties will be used to build additional varsity softball and middle school baseball fields, a new varsity baseball field, six tennis courts, state-ofthe-art turf for the existing soccer field and a cross-country course. While the expansion has been two years in the making, Hurst said the school had been interested in acquiring the Roadrunner property for nearly 10 years. It wasn’t until 2021 that a donor stepped up to bring the goal to fruition. Just as the school was about to close on the property, the contiguous parcel of land also went up for sale, and again, donors stepped up, Hurst said. Collectively, the King’s Ridge purchase adds 19.5 acres to the campus, expanding its overall footprint to more than 90 acres so that it no longer needs to rent courts and fields from cities like Milton and Alpharetta for practices and events.

King’s Ridge Christian School now owns the former 17-acre Roadrunner baseball complex on Cogburn Road. The school purchased the property for $2.2 million in December as well as 2 more acres of adjacent land. Recreation land in those cities has been in high demand in recent years. Milton has spent more than $20 million in the past three years to acquire more than 400 acres of passive park land through its Greenspace Bond, which has freed up other money to buy ready-made athletic fields. In November, Alpharetta residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of a $29.5 million bond that will pay to refurbish more than half a dozen parks and further develop the city’s Alpha Loop linear park. King’s Ridge Head of School Jeff Williams said he’s looking forward to the opportunities the purchase will provide

to the entire “King’s Ridge family.” The Be Bold campaign will also help to fund the completion of the third floor of the Upper School Wing, which will add nine classrooms for students in grades nine through 12, as well as a school-wide campus master plan redesign for a new middle school and fine arts facility. The campaign covers the annual fund for the current school year and next year. To date, the Be Bold capital campaign has raised $4.6 million of its $9.6 million goal. The public phase of giving will culminate in a black-tie gala March 26. For more information about the Be Bold capital campaign or to donate, visit KingsRidgeCS.org/giving.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Mayor Kurt Wilson and the City Council are still making some adjustments as they move into their second month in office. During the council’s first open forum of the new year Jan. 31, Wilson announced that in the future, the forums would be limited to Roswell residents, and those wishing to speak for more than five minutes would have their opportunity after everyone else had been given a chance to speak. The rules were changed under former Mayor Lori Henry without input from the community, limiting speakers to five minutes and without any reserved time for further discussion. Wilson then noticeably got up from behind his desk and opted for a seat directly in front of the podium, where seven different residents presented an array of concerns. Before taking office, Wilson vowed to be more engaged. Roswell resident Frederic Guyonneau said he was hopeful the new slate of council members would usher in an era of collaboration and functionality, and he asked for updates on several properties such as the Dotsie Garner Mills Park on Old Roswell Road. Guyonneau said the

Roswell Police lieutenant dies in medical emergency By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell Police Department is mourning the death of 43-yearold Lt. Joel Ruff, who died Thursday morning of a medical emergency while on duty. Roswell Police spokesman Tim Lupo said the department was “heartbroken” to share the news but did not share details on the circumstances of his death. Ruff was a 23-year veteran of the force. His most recent assignment, Lupo said, was serving as a watch commander for one of the department’s nightshift patrol squads. “Before he ever pinned on his first badge, Lt. Ruff knew in his heart that service to our Roswell community was his calling,” Lupo said. “He began his career as one of our youth Police Explorers in 1995 and confirmed his passion for police work when he took his oath of office in 1998.” “The joy and pride he found in leading his men and women was infectious,” Lupo continued, “and there was nothing he would not do or give of himself to see them succeed. His presence is irreplace-

able, and his memory unforgettable. Lieutenant, rest easy. We have the watch from here.” According to his LinkedIn, Ruff had experience in uniform patrol operations, conducting criminal investigations and law enforcement intelligence. Within an hour of sharing the news in a Facebook post, the Roswell Police Department received over 500 likes, 106 comments and 126 shares. Jason Carter, who left a comment under the post, called Ruff “a great man and one hell of a detective.” “Most people in this thread have already forgotten about the Bicycle Bandit, a bank robber from a few years back,” Carter said. “Lt. Ruff cracked the case.” In 2008, authorities charged a 47-year-old man for twice robbing a Bank of America on Alpharetta Highway. In both instances, the suspect escaped on a bicycle. At the time, authorities in five counties said several banks had been robbed by a “bicycle riding bandit.” Another comment from Betty Honey said Ruff was a nice person and good officer who had always been so helpful to those at the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

ROSWELL POLICE DEPARTMENT/PROVIDED

Roswell Police Lt. Joel Ruff, 43, died early Feb. 3 after suffering a medical emergency while on duty. He was a 23year veteran of the force.

Tracy Cocquyt-McKernan echoed those thoughts. “My heart breaks for all of you at RPD and his family,” Cocquyt-McKernan said. “Lt. Ruff was so kind to all of us in the Citizens Police Academy class and made time to answer our questions and share his love of law enforcement.”

Alpharetta council approves bonds sale to fund city parks projects By JAKE DRUKMAN jake@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The Alpharetta City Council approved the sale of more than $27 million in bonds to fund park projects and took steps toward amending the fiscal year 2022 budget at its Feb. 7 meeting. The bonds will be sold to New Yorkbased multinational banking company Morgan Stanley. Funding from the bonds sale will be used to fund the Alpha Loop project, a renovations at Wills Park and its Equestrian Center, a redevelopment of Union Hill Park and more. The bond referendum drew sharp divides among council members before it was placed on the ballot last year. Voters overwhelmingly approved the bond in November. Councilman Donald Mitchell thanked fellow Councilman Jason Binder and former council members Ben Burnett and Karen Richard for their support in getting the referendum

on the ballot. “I couldn’t be more pleased with how we’re moving the city forward with the parks,” Mitchell said before voting to approve the resolution. The bonds will begin maturing next year and will continue until 2046. In other actions at the Feb. 7 meeting, the council agreed to award a contract for a “Livable Centers Initiative” study on South Main Street to planning and consulting company Kimley-Horn. The Livable Centers Initiative is a grant program headed by the Atlanta Regional Commission to promote walkable and diverse cities. The study will cost a total of $200,000, with the Atlanta Regional Commission footing $160,000 of the bill and the city paying the rest. The council also workshopped improvements to the Cumming Street corridor, upcoming improvements to Wills Park and the idea of closing roads into downtown during this year’s Taste of Alpharetta festival. The council did not take formal action on any of the items.

This year’s Taste of Alpharetta is set for May 12. The festival regularly draws crowds of over 40,000 to downtown. The plan discussed at the meeting calls for closing Main Street – Ga. 9 – from Old Milton Parkway to Academy Street. The city has received permission from the Georgia Department of Transportation to close off the area during the festival. Mayor Jim Gilvin said that while closures may cause inconvenience, the city’s first priority is to ensure that festival attendees are safe. Regarding Wills Park, Recreation & Parks Director Morgan Rodgers noted the park has 11 vehicle entrances, though some are easily missed. When money from the parks bonds comes in, Rodgers said one of the first priorities will be to create more noticeable gateway entrances at the corner of Wills Road and Old Milton Parkway and the corner of Old Milton and Roswell Road. Rodgers said after that would come improvements to the Wacky World playground and Waggy World dog park within Wills Park.

Election year General Assembly focuses on education issues Guns, curriculum, biology head list of proposed bills By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmedia.com ATLANTA — In the opening days of the 2021-22 legislative session, hot button education issues related to curriculum, books, athlete “biology” and firearms in schools have signaled lively debate ahead for state lawmakers. The House and Senate convened Jan. 10 in Atlanta for the second half of the two-year session, slated to end on April 4. The later than normal end to the 40-day session was a bit surprising, especially in an election year with every legislative seat – House and Senate – in play. Under state law, legislators cannot fundraise while in session. In most years, the General Assembly is out by the end of March. House and Senate leaders explained staffing shortages related to the ongoing pandemic means employees need additional time to manage the workload. In addition to new bills introduced this year, lawmakers can also consider any leftover legislation from last session.

FILE PHOTO

Bills introduced in 2021 which saw no final action – pass or fail – can be picked up again for debate. The key date for bill sponsors is Crossover Day on March 15. Bills that have not passed their originating chamber, either the House or Senate, by that date are considered dead for the year. But, with politics nothing is ever really dead. Failed bills are often resurrected and

attached as amendments to other bills, known as “Christmas tree” legislation. The number of headline-grabbing legislation in play already this session is not a surprise to education legislation watchers. Controversial topics that fire up bases are the norm on the campaign trail. “Keep in mind it is an election year,” noted Angela Palm, director of policy and legislative services for the Georgia School Boards Association. “That sometimes makes it harder to separate the serious from the soundbite.” In her Capital Watch blog, Palm noted issues related to what is being taught in K-12 schools, who decides, who approves, and the role of parents in the classroom will be on the table. A look at bills currently under discussion in the legislature: Firearms in schools Sponsored by Rep. Joseph Gullett (R-Dallas), House Bill 903 is called the “Second Amendment Restoration and Protection Act.” It expands the possession of weapons or long guns by individuals within a school safety zone, at a school function, or on a bus to all legal license holders. In 2014, the state restrictions on weapons in school safety zones were

eased. School districts which could not afford campus police officers were allowed to designate security personnel to carry weapons on campus. HB 903 seeks to extend that privilege to all legally licensed individuals, allowing them to carry weapons within school safety zones and other areas if approved by the local school board. The bill also seeks to expand existing state law for those who have locked firearms in their vehicles while on campus. Currently the law only applies to those over 21 legally allowed to carry weapons. HB 903 would expand that provision to students. Critical Race Theory Last summer members of the Georgia Board of Education voted 11-2 to pass a resolution banning the teaching of racebased curriculum, commonly referenced as Critical Race Theory. Gov. Brian Kemp urged school systems to do the same in his State of the State address last month. The resolution had little impact on curriculum, because the Georgia Board of Education does not approve curriculum, but it was a shot across the bow. In the first week of the legislativwe session, three bills have already been filed.

Continued from Page 1 property was donated to the city, but so far, nothing has been done on it. “Wouldn’t it be nice to have a sense of what is the plan for this park?” Guyonneau said. “Which fiscal year is it going to be developed? That would be nice to know. What are the expectations for this park?” Jeff Leatherman, director of Roswell Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs, told the Herald in an email Feb. 3 the park was donated to the city June 13, 2011. “We currently do not have an approved master plan for this park,” Leatherman said. Guyonneau also asked for an update on the 2015 Roswell River Parks Master Plan, specifically the Ace Sand property near St. Andrew Catholic Church on Riverside Road. According to the master plan, the city purchased the property in 1999 and has since been leasing it back to Ace Sand Company. In 2016, the city stated it was in negotiations with the company to determine how best to transition it into city greenspace, calling it the “single biggest opportunity for new development along the [Chattahoochee] river.” Leatherman said the city is working on the final review of the contract documents and Ace Sand Phase I and Phase II. But, he said, it’s a “shovel-ready” project,

meaning the construction drawings are complete and once funding is authorized or awarded, it can start the bidding and construction processes. “The council authorized two grant applications in 2021 for this project, and we are waiting for a determination through the grant review process regarding our applications,” Leatherman said. Another resident, Courtney Rozear, asked for an update on the restoration of the historic Doc’s Café building – the first restaurant in Roswell where African Americans were welcome to eat. Last spring, the city asked citizens to complete an online form through U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath’s office to garner support for more than $7 million in federal funds for both the Ace Sand and Doc’s Café projects. Leatherman said the city did not receive the federal funds. In 2020, the City Council approved the future location of Doc’s Café on Pleasant Hill Street as part of the Oxbo Road realignment project. However, since the project broke ground, it’s faced significant delays and millions of dollars in cash settlements. The project is now expected to be completed by Dec. 24, 2023, or two years past its initial deadline. “Once the road project is complete, the building can be relocated to the final site,” Leatherman said. “The relocation and restoration are at a concept level only and have not been funded.” Meanwhile, Janet Russell, a frequent

speaker at City Council meetings, mentioned how the Roswell Department of Transportation has allegedly removed several MARTA bus stops along Ga. 9 without permission or advising anyone. “You have to walk a mile to get to a bus stop when there’s a regulation between distances, and they’ve been ignored by RDOT,” Russell said. “… We need our MARTA bus stops.” Jason Yowell, another frequent speaker, then questioned why the city gave Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants its parcel of land at Magnolia Street and Mimosa Boulevard “for free” to construct public parking for its boutique hotel. He added that the renderings don’t look anything like what was presented to the public when the project was initially proposed. The San Francisco-based Kimpton Hotels announced Jan. 26 it plans to open the new hotel in historic downtown Roswell in early 2024. Community Relations Director Julie Brechbill told the Herald that the city actually sold the .6110-acre parcel to the Roswell Downtown Development Authority for $150,000 on March 14, 2017. Additionally, the City Council heard from Eren Brumley, who took issue with the city “outsourcing” the Dia de Los Muertos Festival to companies that organize wine festivals and beer festivals since it was first done in 2019. As a woman of Mexican heritage, Brumley suggested the city seek more input from the community

to ensure it’s done with more seriousness rather than Coco-themed. But, Brechbill clarified, the city is not outsourcing the event and is not planning to at this time. The festival is held by the city and coordinated by Roswell’s Special Events Division with the assistance of the Dia de los Muertos Committee. The City Council also approved the city applying for a $20,000 grant from Fulton County Arts and Culture Jan. 24 for the event this fall. Lastly, Brumley mentioned that the correct name of the holiday is “Dia de Muertos” not “Dia de los Muertos,” as city staff insisted even after she corrected them. However, the Mexican Consulate, which is involved in the festival, told city staff either name is fine, and that “Dia de los Muertos” is most commonly used in the U.S. 95% of the time, Brechbill said. Councilwoman Lee Hills said the City Council would do better at communicating with residents. “I heard from every single one of you a concern or a complaint or an ask about communication,” Hills said. “… I think your ideas and your questions are valid and we will definitely do what we can to do better about communicating with you progress and updates – even the bad stuff. That’s what we really want to know – how it’s going to get fixed.” Interim Director of Transportation Dan Skalsky did not respond to a request for comment on the MARTA bus stops by press time Feb. 3.

Kimpton lays plans for Roswell’s first boutique hotel By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — San Francisco-based Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants announced Jan. 26 it will open a muchanticipated boutique hotel in Historic Downtown Roswell in early 2024. Kimpton, part of IHG Hotels and Resorts’ Luxury and Lifestyle Collection, says the hotel will feature 125 guest rooms, including 20 suites, nearly 6,500 square feet of indoor meetings and events space, an 11,000-squarefoot courtyard, fitness center, a rooftop and ground-floor restaurant with bar. The three-story hotel will also offer guests amenities and offerings including morning coffee and tea service, hosted evening social hour, pet-friendly policies, bicycles for local exploration and a “Forgot it? We got it!” program. The Kimpton is meant to complement the vision of True North Companies’ West Alley mixed-use development and transform the underdeveloped site along Mimosa Boulevard and Magnolia Street into a destination for visitors and residents. The project has been in the works for at least five years. In August, the Roswell City Council approved site plan changes to allow private developer West Alley LLC to move forward with the project after an agreement with Canton Place Development broke down in 2020. Kimpton CEO Mike DeFrino said the company has found great success so far with its brand expansion in the South, especially in Georgia. The new Kimpton marks the brand’s fifth

tasked with the interior design of the hotel. The hotel will be managed by HEI Hotels and Resorts, which is headquartered in Connecticut. Thanks to its expansive green space and 397 parking spaces, Kimpton said West Alley Roswell will serve as a hub for events, festivals and other community gatherings. The new Kimpton will then act as an anchor, providing visitors with a place to grab a bite to eat, a drink with friends or a much-needed staycation. It should also give visiting leisure and business guests a central

hub to explore and enjoy all the city has to offer. True North Companies President Walt Gill said he’s honored to be working with HEI and Kimpton to “elevate a new brand of Southern hospitality in the heart of Roswell.” “Their expertise and accomplishments in designing and delivering unparalleled experiences will allow us to provide a one-of-a-kind destination for the city’s leisure guests and its corporate travelers alike,” Gill said.

Health Insurance – What are my options, and what is right for me? Brought to you by Josh Dougherty, Xperience Benefits After our 2nd year of being in business, it did not take long to figure out that people absolutely love talking about health insurance! DOUGHERTY Kidding of course. However, for as much as people do not WANT to talk about it, the truth is that you MUST talk about it. Why? For business owners that sponsor benefits, typically benefits are their 2nd highest cost behind payroll itself! For individuals, it has the potential to be a family’s largest bill besides their mortgage! So, what do we do? Given that we live in the 21st century, we take up arms (our keyboard) and Google “health insurance”. Doing so will give you a litany of large companies that

pay to have their websites at the top of your page and most force you to input information so that some telemarketer will call you selling whatever policy their company pushes. Ok, that may be a bit extreme, but you get the point. So, what are my options and what is right for me? Well, we begin each conversation asking where you are. If you are a business owner and you are looking to offer benefits to your employees, there are HMO, PPO, EPO & POS plans available. There are pros and cons to each one of these plans. Also, if you and your employees are willing to undergo simple underwriting, there are self-funded or level-funded plans that (if you qualify) allow you to garner quality PPO plans, at heavily reduced rates. If you are an individual/family seeking a plan, we would ask about 2 items: 1) you and your family’s overall health and 2) your household income.

Why? There are plans on the individual market that, like above, if you can pass underwriting, you may be eligible for quality plans at a discounted rate. Regarding household income, the passing of the new CARES Act has expanded what is considered the Federal Poverty Level and has increased the amounts of subsidy dollars for folks that qualify for a Marketplace (aka Obamacare) plan. If this is not a route you have looked into recently, we encourage you to do so. Obviously, we would love to chat with you about your insurance needs, but at the end of the day, we just

Approximately 55% of Americans do not have dental insurance, and the primary reason they neglect their oral health is due to the cost of dental care. With our mindset of providing excellent, comprehensive, and compassionate dental care, Roswell Dental Care offers an in-office Wellness Plan as an alternative to traditional dental insurance. Our Wellness Plan is designed to provide a way for our patients to obtain top-notch dental care at a more affordable rate. No deductibles, claim forms, waiting period, annual maximum or exclusions on treatment done in our office. With your plan there are: • No yearly maximums • No deductibles • No claim forms • No pre-authorization requirements • No pre-existing condition limitations • Immediate eligibility (no waiting periods) • Free Consultations • You get access to: • Unlimited exams • Two Healthy Mouth Cleanings per year • New patient comprehensive exam – initial visit • Limited exam – problem focused • Cavity-detecting bitewing x-rays with your cleaning • Whole tooth and root x-rays • Two fluoride treatments per year • 15% off all other services Many people choose their dentists based on what practices are in their insurance network. However, not all dentists or dental experiences are the same. There are two kinds of dental practices: corporate and private practice. Corporate One of the most enticing aspects of corporate clinics is the marketed, economically friendly price range. Although sometimes the price range varies, it is certainly a major selling point. They are usually in network with several insurance companies. Another strong point of corporate dental centers is that they often have several dental practitioners on staff at

once and are available at several locations. There are downsides to corporate dentistry, as with many corporations in other fields. Their operation process sometimes resembles an assembly line. In other words, dental clinics are designed to give you just the assistance you need, then move on to the next patient. High turnover of staff is common. Many dentists and hygienists are pressured to recommend unnecessary treatment; therefore, the general care goes towards making money for the business. These are factories of efficiency, and the faster they can get you in and out, the faster the next person can take your place. Some corporations are worse, while some do try and emulate private practice, but, in the end, they all must work for the company before the patient. Private Practice Private dental practices are owned by a local dentist. Experience is based on trust and one’s personal relationship with their dentist. In a well-run private practice, you will be treated by a local dentist and staff who know you personally. They will understand your specific needs and concerns and are prepared to make sure that you receive the dental care that is best for you as an individual. This is opposed to treating you as just another patient. In addition to personalized treatment, private practices exude a much warmer, friendlier atmosphere in which patients are treated out of care and concern. At Roswell Dental Care, our primary focus is the patient and their experience. We strive to build a life-long relationship with our patients. We consider all staff and patients as part of our “dental family,” which is why we have many patients who we have treated for 40+ years. We have treated several generations of patients, including them, their children, and now their children’s children. Insurance should not dictate what kind of care you receive. Drs. Hood and Remaley offer compassionate, excellent care. See why people have been choosing us for almost 50 years. Stool Transplants — A new melanoma treatment? Brought to you by – Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta Stool (yes, feces) transplants are a real thing. In a world with virtual reality goggles, privatized space exploration, and children who think they know more than their parents, who would have thought that the most innovative medical technology available might be poop? But it’s true. During 2021, increased articles have been published supporting the idea that the bacteria in the gut might have a tremendous impact on our health and immune system. And stool transplants could become part of state-of-the-art cancer care. In February 2021, an article was published in the reputable journal Science. Researchers affiliated with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) identified fifteen melanoma patients who had failed to respond to immunotherapy-type melanoma drugs. These patients received stool transplants via colonoscopy from a melanoma patient who had responded to therapy. The fifteen patients were retreated with the cancer drug, and this time, six of those fifteen patients responded with either tumor reduction or long-term disease stabilization. The type of bacteria that someone has in the gut likely influences how pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory one’s body is overall. Indeed, patients who responded to the stool transplant had molecules associated with resistance to immunotherapy decrease in their system. In October 2021, an article published in Cell showed that the absence of gut bacteria creates a “pro-tumorigenic” environment – one that allows tumors to grow. Certain bacteria activate “STING” genes (Stimulator of Interferon Genes) that make our white blood cells better able to fight tumors. Interferon is a molecule that has long been known to activate white blood cells and help fight cancers. The fact that gut bacteria help activate interferon-associated genes supports that one’s gut bacteria might affect one’s ability to fight cancer. This same article found that a high fiber diet also activated these anti-cancer genes. That an absence of bacteria created an environment that allows tumors to grow raises interesting questions about unintended consequences of using antibiotics that kill gut bacteria. This is a hot topic. A search for “fecal microbiota” at the website clinicaltrials.gov identifies more than one thousand studies related to gut bacteria, feces and treatment of disease such as fecal transplantation for the treatment of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, fecal transplantation for severe acute pancreatitis and many, many more. I’ll never forget the time that I first learned of stool transplants. One of my professor’s daughters had been gravely ill for

SPECIAL/USF HEALTH COLLEGE OF NURSING

more than 6 months with a type of diarrhea caused by the bacteria Clostridium dificil, and the infectious disease doctors had not been able to cure her. She had lost weight to dangerous levels, could not go to school, could not function and was devastated by her condition. As a last-ditch effort, they performed a stool transplant from her sister to her, transferring the stool-saline mixture into her stomach by means of a nasogastric tube. My professor told us that she vomited once and that her breath was terrible for a day but that she was completely cured. Her story is amazing, but not completely shocking. It makes sense that if someone is colonized by bad bacteria that a stool transplant might help replace the bad bacteria with the good. But who would have imagined that stool transplantation and gut bacteria management might find its way into cancer management? Currently, stool transplantation is usually performed by gastroenterologists and oncologists at research centers and should likely be performed as part of a clinical trial. At our dermatology clinic, we do not perform stool transplantation. But, as you can see, we are open-minded and always looking for ways we can help. And thank goodness, we can cure 99% of skin cancers with Mohs surgery and traditional dermatologic techniques. If you or a loved one has a skin cancer or a skin care need, please consider Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta. Dr. Brent Taylor and Kathryn Filipek, PA-C are delighted to help you achieve your skin health goals. Dr. Taylor is fellowship-trained and “triple board certified” -- board certified in dermatology, board certified in micrographic dermatologic surgery (Mohs surgery) and certified in varicose vein treatment by the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine. Ms. Kathryn Filipek has greater than 15 years of dermatology experience with expertise in medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology.

Oral Systemic Health- What does that mean? Brought to you by - Dr. Bradley Hepler and Dr. Jeffrey Priluck, The Atlanta Center for Dental Health Oral Systemic Health means that Dental Health is a part of Whole-Body Health. It means that your mouth is connected to the rest of your body. Any problem in your mouth is going to affect the rest of your body. The rest of your body is going to affect your teeth and your mouth. You may have experienced your dentist recommending that you see your medical doctor for blood work or to have something checked. It’s the connection between your mouth and the rest of your body that makes your mouth a window into the health of your whole body. In dental school, I noticed that the people that had no teeth and needed full mouth dentures also had Diabetes and Heart Disease. It was a pattern that was consistently true. Diabetes and Heart Disease are systemic conditions that affect your whole body through your bloodstream. Diabetes and Heart Disease throw your whole body off balance, stress your body’s ability to respond, and weaken your immune system. Because they are connected, managing your diabetes and heart disease makes your mouth healthier, and a healthy mouth makes managing your diabetes and heart disease easier. A weakened immune system and the chronic inflammation that results from a

dental infection that goes untreated (even a low-grade infection in your gums that doesn’t hurt) stresses your body and leads to other chronic illnesses. Inflammation is one of the body’s frontline defense mechanisms. It is a lifesaving biochemical process that en¬ables the body to defend itself against bacteria, viruses, para¬sites, and injury. Researchers keep reporting more and more studies that show the harmful effects inflammation has on the body. In fact, chronic inflammation may be the driver of many of today’s most common and most feared diseases. Inflammation increases your risk of Heart Attack, Stroke, Diabetes, Cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, and Pregnancy complications, like preterm and low birth weight babies. One of the major sources of inflammation in the human body is the chronic inflammation that results from undiagnosed and untreated gum disease and periodontal disease. In the United States, eighty percent of adults have some form of gum disease. Treating and preventing gum disease can reduce your chances of ever having Heart Disease, Diabetes, Cancer, or Alzheimer’s Disease. Preventing the inflammatory processes associated with Gum Disease make these diseases easier to manage, meaning less medicine, fewer doctor’s appointments, and a more comfortable, enjoyable life. A healthy mouth is part of a healthy body. Our wish for you is that you look and feel your best in 2022!

February is National Cancer Prevention Month, so now is a great time to talk about how to prevent cancer. To be honest, we aren’t doing a very good job of this in our society. The lifetime risk of developing cancer has been steadily rising to the point that roughly 40% of the population will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. Why are we seeing so much cancer today? You might wonder if cancer is simply due to genetic causes, but that is actually a very small cause of cancer today (about 5-10% based on most estimates). Rather, cancer is mostly due to poor lifestyle choices. If you want to significantly reduce your odds of developing cancer, be sure to eat a plant-focused diet full of fruits, vegetables, beans, and grains. Organic is best. Avoid processed, sugary food. Drink plenty of clean, filtered water. Exercise regularly. Don’t smoke. Enjoy alcohol in moderation. Get plenty of sleep. Seek to minimize stress. Embrace a strong support system of family and friends. Oh, and be sure to see your doctor for regular check-ups, including the recommended cancer screening tests. Hopefully, you won’t get cancer, but if you do, early detection is key.

GET OUTSIDE, GEORGIA!

It requires skills to locate Atomic Hills I sure did enjoy that spate of warm days we had at the end of December. Except for the vaguely jarring oddness of having a winter day feel like early June, it really was pretty neat. STEVE HUDSON Besides, it got me Get Outside Georgia, thinking about fishing. aa4bw@comcast.net I haven’t been fishing a lot these last few months. There’s just been a lot of stuff going on. Life gets knotty sometimes. Fishing buddies and loved ones become ill and suffer, or worse, and pretty soon you find your psyche kind of beat up and hurting. You’re shellshocked and numb, and you don’t want to do much of anything. Even fishing. Those can be heavy times, and they hurt. But the springlike burst of warmth pried me out of my funk, at least a little bit, and put me in a fishing frame of mind. So, I dug out the rod and all and loaded up the truck and off I went. Maybe I’d even bring home a couple for supper. On the chosen day, it was well into afternoon by the time I got going. But my destination (one of my favorite places to go when time is tight) was only a few miles up the road. A buddy of mine said it had been fishing well, adding that the trout were showing fondness for small, bright orange egg imitations. My fly box held a dozen or so of them, each handcrafted from a hook, a metal bead, and a tuft of vivid orange yarn. “Just the thing,” I told myself, opening the box and double-checking. All was as it should be. I set the fly box on the table next to my keys. It didn’t take long to get to the water. I put on the waders and assembled the rod, threading the line through the guides. Then I headed to the water. I’d tie on the fly at river’s edge. Then there it was – the spot I’d been thinking about, a spot with some rocks that squeeze and bend the flow into a nice, deep run. That’s where I was going to drift my little orange fly – right through the deepest part, right where the big ones ought to be. I stepped into the river and stood there about a yard from the shoreline, acclimating. Then I reached into my pocket for the fly box to select the day’s offering. Uh oh. I recalled checking the flies. I remembered putting the fly box on the table. But what I did not recall was transferring the fly box to my pocket. An iconic phrase came to mind – “No

matter where you are, there you are” – and where I was at that exact moment was on a trout stream with a fly rod but no flies. For a moment I just stood there. Then, sighing, I turned to walk back to the truck. That’s when I saw it. Right at the edge of the water, wrapped around a limb of a streamside tree, was the glint of a piece of fishing line. And what should be hanging from the end of that line but tiny spot of something orange? I moved to check this out. Sure enough, it was an orange egg, lost by some earlier angler. Fly fishers lose flies all the time. But sometimes they lose them in the right places. I carefully untangled the little piece of line, tucking the monofilament into one of my pockets before tying that serendipitous fly to the end of my own line. I wish I could tell you a great story at this point, a miraculous story, a story of how on the fly’s very first drift an enormous trout of Biblical proportions rose from the depths and engulfed it, and then how an epic battle ensued, and then how (thanks to unsurpassed skill and derringdo) I finally prevailed, and then how I admired the leviathan fish in my net as an unseen gallery of fishing buddies past, present and future, cheered me on. But I can’t tell you that, because that’s not what happened. Instead, what happened was – nothing. I fished that fly for more than an hour. I did it right too. But there were no takers. None. I didn’t even get a bite. Not even one. I guess it would be frozen pizza for supper after all. By then the light was fading. It was time to get off the river, so I made my way slowly back toward shore. The day was done. No fish. But the odd thing is I didn’t really mind. Why did I not mind? That question puzzled me. I started thinking about it, and pretty soon I was thinking about why we do all of this at all. Why do we go fishing? Why do we fool with all the gear and drive all the miles and slip on rocks only to stand waist-deep shivering in ice-cold water? There are days when we do it to conquer something, to achieve something, to prove something, to catch and keep something that might otherwise get away. Yeah, sometimes that’s what it’s all about. We do it to bring something home. And that is okay. But sometimes we do it to leave something behind.

In Memoriam

Meri Kay Milam Lowe April 6, 1948 – January 25, 2022

Kay was born in Decatur, AL, the daughter of Ruth and Paul Milam. After following her brother Jim to Auburn University, Kay moved to Atlanta where she met and married Gene. They grew their family to include sons Mike and Kevin, eventually moving to Roswell. With her bulldog Tubbie by her side, Kay ran the Viking Sauna office for many years on South Atlanta Street. She always welcomed friends into their home in the Martins Landing community, where she could usually be found chasing active boys and dogs around the neighborhood. Kay and Gene moved to Greensboro, GA, where they became early residents of Reynolds Plantation on Lake Oconee. Kay took pride in contracting their homes in Reynolds, often sporting her own hard hat to construction sites. As the neighborhood grew, so did Kay’s circle of friends that she

hosted often. Two daughters in law and five grandchildren joined the family, and Kay adopted their families and friends as her own. Kay is survived by Gene, her husband of 53 years, brother Jim Milam and his wife Sharon of Sandy Springs, son Mike and his wife Susanne of Alpharetta, son Kevin and his wife Danielle of Cumming, grandchildren Jack, Charlotte, Kathryn, Cooper and Hunter Lowe, sister-in-law Ginnie Rait and her husband Jim Rait of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and many other loving family members. A celebration of life will be held at the Lake Oconee Church in Greensboro, Georgia, on Saturday, February 5, 2022, at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations to honor Kay be made to https://www. garysinisefoundation.org/ or https://www. crohnscolitisfoundation.org/.

“We don’t just blindly do mean things to people,” Levent said in an interview prior to the vote. “It’s just

that right now we need six fields desperately for these kids and we’re juggling what we have and our resources to maintain those fields.” County commissioners informally agreed at a Dec. 2 meeting to hold a town hall regarding the land swap before the vote, but the meeting never oc-

curred. Meanwhile, residents near the park mounted a campaign to stop the deal. Kay Veal, who sold the county most of the acreage for the park three years ago, said she and her late husband had turned down millions of dollars in offers from developers. She said her late hus-

band was opposed to having the property covered in homes. “My husband just did not want houses on his farm,” Veal said. “We turned down $10 million because he didn’t want houses on the property. Now it looks like they’re going to put houses on the property.”

Forsyth OKs parkland swap for Polo Fields By JAKE DRUKMAN jake@appenmedia.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Close to 100 residents showed up Feb. 3 as the Forsyth County Commission voted to swap a portion of the new Denmark Park for property developed for sports at the Polo Fields. The vote was 5-0. The deal cedes just under twothirds of Denmark Park – 50 acres – for almost 39 acres at Polo Fields, including its six soccer fields. In all, 19 residents addressed commissioners on the issue during public comment. Sentiment was split almost evenly. Resident Lisa Calloway spoke passionately against the land swap, accusing the county of shrouding the deal in secrecy up until the vote. As the commission approved the purchase of Polo Fields, she and several other residents opposed to the deal stood up and left the chamber. Residents in favor of the deal applauded. “They told us in December they would have a town hall, and they didn’t,” Calloway said as she exited the commission chambers. “We all

come to this meeting and make a public comment, but it was very clear that they had already decided.” Resident Mike Melz spoke to commissioners in favor of preserving the Polo Fields. He said the fields have become one of Forsyth County’s historical landmarks, the “crown jewel” of the county. Speaking after the vote, Melz said he was gratified the Polo Fields will be preserved. “When you look at the history of the Polo Fields, Prince Charles played polo there with the British royal polo team,” Melz said. “That’s history. That is definitively something to cherish.” Melz said he wasn’t thrilled about the possibility of Denmark Park land being developed into houses, but that it made more sense to give up the park. Under terms of the agreement, the county will purchase the Polo Fields property for $7.5 million. County Attorney Ken Jarrard said the deal is contingent upon the county raising at least the same amount from the sale of the Denmark Park property. He said that if the county is unable to sell the portion of Denmark Park for at least $7.5 million by June 6, the contract to purchase Polo Fields is dissolved unless it is amended before then. Developers have made efforts in recent years to rezone Polo Fields to allow residential and commercial

family owned & operated since 1928

developments. Residents around Denmark Park say they fear those development plans will now move to the park land. The commission purchased the first plot of land that became Denmark Park in 2018 and budgeted $12 million for its development. When money became tight in 2020, the commission opted to divert those funds into improving existing parks. District 3 County Commissioner Todd Levent, whose district covers Denmark Park, spoke against diverting the funds. Polo Fields, about 5 miles northeast of the park, also falls in Levent’s district. Levent said he wished the county had the money to pur chase Polo Fields and keep Denmark
