Twilight storms douse fireworks By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell’s Fourth of July festivities were cut short Monday, when, after holding out for as long as possible, organizers had to cancel the

fireworks display due to heavy rain and lightning. The annual 4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza at Roswell Area Park brought out thousands of visitors, beginning at 6 p.m. It included live music, entertainment and food trucks.

At around 5:45 p.m., Roswell Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs announced on social media the park was closed and parking was full. Two hours later, people continued to

ATLANTA, Ga.—Fulton County Schools is one year into an ambitious threeyear program to get students back on academic track after the COVID-19 pandemic. With reams of research showing student achievement lagged during the nearly two-year span of the pandemic, district officials are confident the gap can close by 2024. “While there are some successes, we have a lot of work to close the achievement gap which has widened,” said Fulton Schools’ Chief Information Officer Brian Noyes. “Our continued implementation of [academic interventions] aim to support all students in the district and initiate new programs to close these gaps in the future.” Last spring, Fulton Schools launched the “Bridge to Success” plan which consists of several strategic goals

Woman accuses stepson of vandalizing her home ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An Alpharetta woman reported to police June 26 that someone had thrown a rock through the window of her home on America’s Cup Cove. The woman told police she had been upstairs when she heard a crash come from downstairs. She said “a large rock, almost like a decorative stone” was in the dining room and the room’s window had been shattered. When asked who she thought may have thrown the rock, the woman told police her husband’s son had been going through some issues “and was constantly under the influence of Delta 8,” according to the report. She also said her stepson had sent her and her husband angry texts that day. The residence had a doorbell camera, but it was not charged and had not recorded the incident.

Suspect opens account with woman’s information ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An Alpharetta woman reported June 25 that someone opened a shopping account using her personal information. The woman told police she received an email from identity protection company LifeLock stating that someone had opened an account in her name with Flexshopper, a Florida-based furniture and appliance company. The suspect apparently had access to the woman’s personal information including the street address she lived at as a child and her college mascot, which they used to “verify” her identity. The woman contacted Flexshopper support,

PUBLIC SAFETY but they required a police report for the fraud claim. Police advised the woman to freeze her credit. The report does not state that any money was stolen from the woman’s accounts.

The woman said the friend had also made fake Facebook profiles in an attempt to harass her. Police attempted to contact the woman’s former friend, but she did not answer her door. The mother requested a copy of the police report to apply for a temporary protective order.

Pair suspected in theft of $12,500 worth of wire

Thief takes cash, tools from auto supply store

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A Lowe’s manager reported to police June 23 that two unidentified suspects had stolen more than $12,500 in merchandise on June 15. The manager told police that the store’s loss prevention department investigates theft cases itself and determines if the case is prosecutable before notifying police. A loss prevention employee said the suspects entered the store around 5:30 p.m., loaded two shopping carts with around 76 rolls of expensive wire and left without paying. The employee provided police with security camera images of the suspects and a license plate for the vehicle they left in. Police were able to identify the vehicle’s owner and use information on her Facebook profile to possibly identify the second suspect. The report lists a 30-year-old Lawrenceville man and a 47-year-old Decatur woman as suspects. The report states “the same suspect committed a similar theft in Sandy Springs,” but does not specify which suspect.

ROSWELL, Ga. –– Police responded to a report of a burglary at Mavis Tires and Brakes on Alpharetta Highway June 19. The manager told police when she arrived at work that morning, she noticed the back door had been forced open. Inside, she noticed tools had been stolen along with $300 cash from the register. The manager stated she thinks an employee she recently fired may have been involved. She told police the former employee had attempted to walk off with tools on the day he was fired. Police obtained store video footage showing a male entering from the back of the store at 1 a.m., then taking the tools and cash from the register.

Woman accuses ex-friend of threatening daughter ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An Alpharetta woman reported June 22 that a former friend sent her harassing texts and Facebook messages. The woman told police that one of the messages said the friend would “put [the woman’s] daughter on a t-shirt,” which the woman interpreted to mean the woman “was going to shoot her daughter.” There were no direct threats of violence in the messages, according to the report.

Woman’s items taken from business lobby ROSWELL, Ga. –– A Roswell woman reported several personal items stolen June 15 at Midguard Storage on Alpharetta Street. The victim told police she’d left items in the lobby of the facility to return the U-Haul truck she’d rented. During the two hours she was gone, someone had taken her belongings. The victim said the items missing included stainless steel bowls, seasonal decor, fabric, miscellaneous kitchen and bathroom towels and items, candle holders, a couch pillow, Cricut machine markers, miscellaneous items and a Christmas tree with ornaments – more than $1,300 worth of items. Video footage at the storage unit showed a white pick-up truck with two

Roswell councilman’s wife submits his resignation letter By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The wife of Roswell City Councilman Marcelo Zapata, acting under power of attorney, submitted his resignation letter in an email to Mayor Kurt Wilson on June 28. The letter was submitted approximately six hours after Wilson made a video announcing that the city will hold a special election in November to replace Zapata. While the letter did not state why Zapata was resigning, he has been away from his post since November 2021 for medical reasons. Selina Zapata says in the letter that her husband has served on the Post 1 seat since 2016. “It has been a privilege and an honor for him to serve the great City of Roswell,” it states. “I wish the Council and you the very best in all future endeavors.” Wilson told Appen Media in a phone interview on June 27 he intends to share more details about the upcoming election at the July 11 City Council meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. at City Hall.

Alpharetta, Milton offer settlement with former solicitor By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The cities of Alpharetta and Milton have offered to pay their former solicitor $25,000 to settle all claims that she was passed over to fill the position because of her age and race. The cities deny any wrongdoing. Fran Shoenthal McQueen served as the solicitor of Alpharetta and Milton for close to 20 years. But, in April, Kelsie Mattox was sworn into office following an intergovernmental agreement between both cities to further strengthen their bond. Alpharetta and Milton already share court facilities and a municipal clerk. Appen Media obtained a copy of the cities’ 9-page response to McQueen’s demand letter sent on June 24. The cities are being represented by Kenneth Robin with the law firm Jarrard and Davis. The response rejects McQueen’s demand for lost back pay and benefits from the date she was terminated or not hired, reinstatement or front pay, compensatory damages for emotional distress and loss of reputation, puni-

tive damages and/or liquidated damages, and costs and attorneys’ fees. It disputes McQueen’s claims that she was entitled to her position through Dec. 31, 2025, because the Alpharetta City Charter states it is tied to that of the judge of the Alpharetta Municipal Court. On Jan. 1, Judge Barry Zimmerman began another four-year term; however, he has since retired to resolve an investigation against him for possible ethical lapses. The response states that under the Alpharetta City Charter, the solicitor’s term is “at the discretion of the mayor and City Council, and McQueen’s employment as Milton Solicitor was “unquestionably at-will.” Because McQueen was classified as an independent contractor in Alpharetta, the response states the city did not control how she performed her solicitor duties, withheld no monies from her payments for taxes or Social Security, did not require her to work 40 hours per week, did not maintain a personnel file for her or prevent her from practicing law in other jurisdictions when court was not in session. In fact, the response states, the cities’ efforts to hire a new, full-time

solicitor were to eliminate their “persession” compensation methodology. It states that as of the beginning of 2022, McQueen’s annual aggregated compensation was between $180,000 and $190,000 for less than 30 hours of work per week. “Through the establishment of a full-time solicitor position,” it states, “… the cities hoped to achieve operating efficiencies where the solicitor could focus on moving cases along to a point where the number of court sessions per week was reduced (as opposed to continuing with the existing solicitor model and structure that disincentivized that type of operating efficiency because the compensation structure was directly tied to the number of court sessions that occurred).” The response also calls McQueen’s claims that her replacement, Mattox, was unqualified to fill the position “dubious,” saying that in the same job posting that was referenced in the demand letter, it states that “any combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job qualifies.” “That language will not be ignored by the EEOC or any court if the threat-

ened claims are pursued and rebuts the argument that Ms. Mattox ‘failed to meet the minimum qualifications’ or is somehow an illegitimate choice to fill the position solely because she had nearly four years as a member of the State Bar of Georgia instead of five when chosen to fill the position,” it states. Mattox, it states, actually provided six character references to the City of Alpharetta from citizens. Four members of the State Bar of Georgia also “highly recommended” Mattox by providing statements “praising her legal reputation and proficiency.” Lastly, the response states, the fact that McQueen is white, and Mattox is black is an inadequate foundation to assert that any kind of Title VII race discrimination exists. “Tellingly, your letter is devoid of any recitation or direct, circumstantial or any other type of competent evidence that would support McQueen being able to succeed in demonstrating that the hiring of Mattox was a product of intentional race discrimination,” it states. As of June 30, McQueen’s attorney had not yet responded to the cities’ offer.

Festivities:

Thousands fill Roswell Area Park for the annual 4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza.

Continued from Page 1 pour in, setting their lawn chairs and blankets all around the various fields around the park. When the rain began at 8:30 p.m., many people gathered their things to leave, others held on to their spots, hopeful that the fireworks would go on as planned. Roswell resident Carlene Upson and her 11-year-old son were among those waiting in line at the food trucks even after it started to rain, saying that the downpour had not ruined their plans. Upson said it was their first time attending the event. Like Upson, many others said the 4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza served as an excuse to get out of the house. “We were just playing it by ear – no plans,” Upson said. “I saw a sign passing by on the street, so I went online and looked, and I said oh shoot let’s go! … [For me], it’s a holiday to celebrate whichever way you so choose to.” Mona Moreno, who was also at the event with her family, said she was excited to get to celebrate the country’s independence. “We’re here to celebrate America,” Moreno said. Melissa Hosea said she and her family had made the drive to Roswell from McDonough simply because of the fireworks. “We saw the 4th of July Extravagan-

That’s why we came all the way from McDonough. The rain messed up our plans a little bit, but we plan on staying.” The fireworks were set to start at 9:30 p.m., but an hour later, the city announced it was canceling the display due to inclement weather. “Please accept our apologies and know we’re looking forward to the next Fourth,” the city stated on Facebook.

I look forward to seeing the impact of this expansion … as they keep the Peach State on the cutting edge of medical science. BRIAN KEMP, Georgia Governor 8 | Alpharetta-Roswell Herald | July 7, 2022

The Fulton County Development Authority discusses approval June 28 of a $75 million tax break for a new Boston Scientific location planned for Johns Creek.

Medical manufacturer eyes plant in Johns Creek By JAKE DRUKMAN jake@appenmedia.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Massachusetts-based medical device manufacturer Boston Scientific is expanding into Johns Creek. The company produces, designs and develops medical devices and procedures for specialized health care providers. It has facilities and headquarters across the U.S., Europe, Central America, Asia and South Africa. The Development Authority of Fulton County gave final approval June 28

to a $75 million revenue bond for the facility that will provide the company a 10-year property tax abatement on its new plant. Until Tuesday, the Development Authority referred to the Boston Scientific development under the codename “Project Lemon Lime.” Boston Scientific already has a presence in Alpharetta, and its new Johns Creek facility will be at the former State Farm campus on Johns Creek Parkway, adjacent to a newly planned mixed-use development headed by Avalon developer Mark Toro’s company.

Gov. Brian Kemp’s office announced the new facility Tuesday afternoon, saying it represents a $62.5 million investment from the company and will bring about 340 new jobs to Fulton County. “As home to some of the leading universities and technical colleges in the country, Georgia produces top talent for growing fields like the life sciences industry,” Kemp stated. “I look forward to seeing the impact of this expansion here in Georgia and far beyond as they keep the Peach State on the cutting edge of medical science.”

Fulton County Director of Economic Development Samir Abdullahi said the facility’s announcement gives Fulton County “the opportunity to say we stole bio life sciences out of Boston.” He said the project was a great win for Johns Creek and would help vitalize the city’s Town Center project. Former Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker, who now serves as the Development Authority’s treasurer, said he and Mayor John Bradberry are extremely excited to welcome Boston Scientific to the city.

Cumming celebrates City Center milestone

NEWS

By JAKE DRUKMAN jake@appenmedia.com CUMMING, Ga. — The City of Cumming held a community gathering June to ring in the next phase of construction for its City Center development on Canton Highway. Though Mayor Troy Brumbalow cut the ribbon on the project, the 75-acre City Center project is far from complete. Friday’s ceremony signified the end of the city’s construction on the project and the beginning of tenant business buildouts. Brumbalow was joined in the ceremony by community leaders such as State Rep. Lauren McDonald, First Baptist Church Pastor Bob Jolly and Forsyth Central High School Principal Josh Lowe. In the midst of his reelection campaign, Gov. Brian Kemp also joined in the festivities. “This is a special day here in Cumming and all of Forsyth County, and really throughout this whole region of our state,” Kemp said. “We know that [people] will come from miles away to enjoy all the City Center has to offer, and when they leave, they’ll know why Cumming is such a special place.” The City Center, which the city credits Brumbalow for devising, is planned to contain more than 115,000 square feet of retail space, a new Cumming Police and municipal court building, a trail and boardwalk system, a golf putting course and more community space. The city held the ribbon cutting in the new Lou Sobh Amphitheater, an outdoor anchor of the City Center. The project faced a major challenge since it broke ground in August 2019: the unexpected onset of the pandemic. Brumbalow and Kemp both praised the city’s perseverance in continuing the project amid the complications. “This project, I’ve kind of likened it to a woman having a three-year labor and trying to deliver an elephant,” Brumbalow said. “As hard as you want to push

Alpharetta protesters decry abortion restrictions By JAKE DRUKMAN jake@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Cries of “my body, my choice” filled the streets of Alpharetta July 2 as dozens of abortion-rights protesters marched through one of the city’s main corridors to City Hall. The protesters decried the Supreme Court’s June 24 overturning of the landmark abortion case Roe v. Wade. The group marched about 1.18 miles — 75,000 inches — a representation of the 75,000 people protesters say will be forced to give birth or receive unsafe abortions over the next year. Protesters began their march at Avalon, moving down Old Milton Parkway to Haynes Bridge Road, ending with a gathering at the pavilion outside City Hall. The group primarily consisted of high school and college students, though other age groups were also represented. Groups such as Gen-Z For Change, Young Democrats of Georgia and Voters of Tomorrow joined for the event. Protesters spoke out on the issue’s importance outside City Hall, calling for all levels of government to take action to defend abortion rights and for people of all ages to demand more action from their elected officials. “If it was about life, we would have fixed various problems in this country,” said Komal Nambiar, a protester and member of Gen-Z For Change. “Gun reform, the foster care system… 2.5 million children are homeless in this country a year. ‘My body, my choice’ means that the government should have no say in what we can and can’t do with our bodies. We need the right to make these decisions for ourselves

privately. This isn’t about life, it’s about control.” Nambiar also highlighted that the Supreme Court’s recent decision on abortion has called the permanence of other rights into question. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas noted in a written opinion that the court should “reconsider” the cases that legalized same-sex marriage and guaranteed legal access to contraception nationwide. Nambiar called for voters to oust Gov. Brian Kemp from office in the upcoming election, citing the 2019 “heartbeat bill” Kemp backed that would have outlawed abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected, usually around the sixth week of pregnancy. A federal judge blocked the heartbeat bill in 2020, stating that it violated rights set forth in Roe v. Wade. With Roe overturned, abortion-rights groups fear a similar law would now be able to go into effect. “We need to secure our state before it becomes too late,” Nambiar said. “Vote in the election Nov. 8, get Gov. Kemp out of office… Get out there and fight for what’s right. Fight for your sister, your mother and yourself, because if we don’t stand up for ourselves, no one else will.”

Final design nears on new campus for county offices By R.J. TURNER newsroom@appenmedia.com CUMMING, Ga. – Forsyth County officials are heading into the final design phase for a new Administration Building campus on Freedom Parkway near Ga. 400. The new government complex, with an estimated price tag of $95 million, is needed because the government and the services it provides have outgrown the downtown Cumming headquarters, county officials say. “The county has had to rent space on West Maple Street paying $400,000 in rent per year,” Forsyth County Manager Kevin Tanner said. The new campus will be a one-stop-shop service facility, where “everyone will be under one roof,” Tanner said. The campus will occupy 42 acres and include the Administration Building and Employee Center, the Whole Health Building and greenspace amenities. The new four-story Administration Building headquarters is approximately 130,000-square-feet, enough space to house nearly 14 county departmental functions, such as bill payment, permitting, business licensing and other administrative services. The first floor single-story Commissioner Meeting Room will occupy a large wing of the building, with an above outdoor roof deck. With public and secured access areas, room interiors include commissioners and administrative offices, conference, training facilities, and other services rooms. The facility will have state-of-the-art capabilities for the county’s broadcasting operations., “The Communications Department will have a quality system for in-person and virtual meetings,” Tanner said. The Employee Center, located in the same building, will be approximately 25,000-square-feet and is designed to attract and retain long-term employment for Forsyth County. “Having a healthy work force in mind…the county sent out a survey to employees on what they would like to see,” Tanner said. “The center is a place where employees can go and get a PA (physician assistant) nurse, medication, 24-hour gym, attend nutrition classes, the wellness center, and lounge.” County officials are reviewing the results of the surveys received.

This is an aerial view rendering of the new Forsyth County Administration Building, Employee Center and Commissioner Meeting Room that will sit on 42 acres on Freedom Parkway near Ga. 400. Commercial options for the building, Tanner said, include room for from two to three retail spaces available for, most likely, food vendors who will submit offers to the county to operate in the building. The Whole Health Building, approximately 65,000 in square footage, will contain a new mental health facility along with the Forsyth County Department of Health. Avita Community Partners (formed by the Georgia Legislature with facilities throughout the state), will operate a health unit for inpatient and outpatient mental health and other services for adults and youth in one part of the facility. After relocation, the County Health Department will continue offering services such as healthcare, vaccines, WIC and dental services in another. Greenspace on the campus includes a passive park with walking trail and picnic area. Ample parking will be available onsite. Tanner estimates that the Administration Build-

ing will cost about $47 million, about half the $95 million price tag. The Employee Center has an estimated cost of $11 million, and $34 million will go for the Whole Health Center. Forsyth County will pay for the cost of the Administration Building and for making the Whole Health Building pad-ready. Part of the cost for the Employee Center will be provided through savings garnered from employee insurance. The Whole Health Building is funded through the U.S. Department of the Treasury, American Rescue Plan Fund. Completion of the final design is scheduled for September. County leaders are evaluating proposals to decide a contractor for site development and construction. Work is slated to begin in spring 2023, with completion in 18 months.

Milton buys more parkland By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — The Milton City Council unanimously agreed June 20 to purchase three adjacent properties on Bethany Bend bordering Alpharetta’s North Park for $1.95 million. The properties are at 2545 Bethany Bend and add up to 7.08 acres in one of the more population-dense parts of Milton. The plan is to turn them into an active park with facilities and recreational programming that align with the 2027 Parks and Recreation Master Plan. Parks and Recreation Director Tom McKIveen said there will now be a 90day due diligence period to allow the city to conduct surveys and inspections, followed by the closing date 30 days later. In the meantime, the owners of the properties – Cagle & Cagle Real Estate Investments, Timothy and Janie Cagle and Charles Cagle Sr. – have asked for a leaseback of their homes for up to 18 months. McKIveen said the leaseback for two homes on the properties will be for $3,500 a month. In other business at the meeting, the City Council voted 6-1 to impose a moratorium on the acceptance of new

building and development permissions, plats, plans or permits within a 23acre parcel area known as the District of Mayfield. The district includes properties off Broadwell Road, Charlotte Drive, Mayfield Road and Mid Broadwell Road in southern Milton. The moratorium expires at midnight on July 18, giving the city time to prepare, consider and potentially adopt a Historic Preservation Overlay that could impact the regulation of the exteriors of new or modification of existing structures within the District of Mayfield. City Attorney Ken Jarrard said the city will run a legal ad to invite residents to speak at a public hearing, which could be followed by a “much longer” moratorium until December. Councilwoman Carl Cookerly cast the lone dissent after Jarrard confirmed that the affected property owners had not been notified about the moratorium. “So, in my book, this is a shortterm taking,” Cookerly said. “We are seizing their property rights, or however you want to look at it. Does that seem fair?” Jarrard said he preferred the phrase,

Woman loses $300 in online transaction ROSWELL, Ga. –– A Roswell woman was scammed out of $300 June 12 over a sale on Facebook. The victim told police she had tried selling a pair of boots on Facebook for $50. She was contacted by a potential buyer who said she would purchase the boots, but would have to spend $150 on a Zelle account and asked the buyer to reimbursed her. After the victim paid the $150, she was contacted again by the buyer, who said the victim would need to make another payment of $150. The victim complied, then realized she’d been scammed. Police advised her to freeze her bank account and send all emails and conversations she had with the scammer.

Bridge:

Continued from Page 1 gic goals to reach in three years. Those targets include learning recovery from the COVID-19 disruption, obtaining the highest growth averages among Atlanta Metro area students, and earning high marks from stakeholders, such as parents and teachers, with the district’s performance. The overarching goal, noted Noyes, is to directly address the impact of the pandemic on lost instruction and learning, and also ensure the safety of students, staff and families. While the Bridge program is embedded into the daily curriculum of schools, including after school and weekend programs, services also extend into the summer. Last year nearly 20,000 students received summer school instruction. This summer, the district expects to have approximately 15,000 students learning in-person and virtually.

Federal funds support program

Funding for the Bridge to Success program comes almost exclusively from federal COVID relief funding provided to schools under three rounds of disbursements. In total, Fulton County Schools received $262 million, making it one of the largest recipients among Georgia school districts. “Our district, like many others across the country, and around the world, has faced unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19,” Chief Financial Officer Marvin Dereef said. “Fortunately, the federal government has made funds available to help us mitigate the learning loss [and] ensures our ability to put resourc-

es in place to help all our students.” Based on the plan submitted to the Georgia Department of Education, Fulton Schools expects to direct nearly all of the funding to programs and people who are supporting the Bridge to Success program and related instructional needs. With one year of the Bridge program complete, and the second year underway, district officials are in the process of gathering input on its impact.

Officials look for trends

Results from the state-mandated Georgia Milestones testing are expected to be released soon which will contain information on student achievement. The information will not present a clear picture of pre- and post-pandemic because the state waived participation requirements the past two years. However the data should show trends within specific student groups. The continuation of virtual instruction will likely be an issue the district will address in the coming years. Extensive research conducted by Georgia State University concluded in-person instruction was the key to academic achievement. Last year Fulton Schools opened an all-virtual school, FAVE, for students and parents who preferred online learning. The future of that program is being reviewed. “We have seen positive and negative trends at FAVE as we work with our staff and families to adopt this new environment and model,” Noyes said. “Plans are underway to sharpen instruction, student engagement, and parental participation so we can achieve the results we know we are capable of.” Information about the Bridge to Success program can be found at on the Fulton County Schools website, fultonschools.org/bridgetosuccess.

The Georgia Peach Pancake This is summertime creation that will only be available in June & July while supplies last!

What we have done is taken the concept of our famous “Apple Pancake” that is made from our homemade batter and added a seasonal peach twist to it. We are taking freshly picked peaches purchased from local Georgia peach orchards, slicing them and baking them into our daily made German batter. This summertime concoction is topped with a brown sugar glaze to add that little bit of sweetness to the eggy bater and fresh peaches.

Industry innovators take on new roles

Brought to you by - Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Georgia Properties

After 37 dedicated years in the real estate business, Dan Forsman will be taking on a new role as Chairman of market-leading brokerage, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Georgia Properties. This decision was not made lightly, and it didn’t happen overnight. In fact, Forsman has been preparing for this day for years; mentoring the Georgia Properties team and guiding them with his acquired - and extensive - industry knowledge. Last year was a record-breaking year at Georgia Properties. In 2021, the firm closed $5.2 billion in sales, and is on track to do even better in 2022. Currently, Georgia Properties has over 1,500 Georgia Properties sales associates and 29 office locations with plans to continue expansion throughout Georgia. “It’s because of the extraordinary prosperity and growth of the company that we’re able to enter this new chapter of our story,” Forsman said. Leading the way is DeAnn Golden, who takes the helm at the company as Georgia Properties President and Chief Executive Officer. Golden has been with the brokerage since 2004, but she’s been in real estate for more than 26 years. She’s a secondgeneration real estate professional who has taken on

many roles in our industry that have prepared her for this one. “DeAnn is a fierce advocate for transformational change, a brilliant communicator but even more so, an exquisite listener,” Forsman noted. “And when she listens, she really hears you.” Golden’s passion for Georgia Properties sales associates is exceeded only by her commitment to seeing every person at the brokerage succeed. When asked what makes the company so different from all the others, Golden delivered an answer that encapsulates her human-centric leadership style: “We care.” In addition to Golden, Kathy Connelly will assume the role of Chief Operating Officer, and will lead Georgia Properties’ mortgage, title and insurance initiatives as well as continue to champion relocation and the property management business. Connelly joined the company in 1994 and held the positions of Relocation Director, Senior Vice President and most recently Qualifying Broker. She has been recognized globally for her relocation excellence and was recently appointed to the Worldwide ERC Board of Directors. Lori Lane will be President of Georgia Properties’ New Homes Division and Executive Strategist for Luxury Collection and Global Living. She joined the company in 2006 as Director of New Homes. As President, she will continue to lead the growth and

development of the New Homes Division, where she and her team have won hundreds of GAHBA Obie awards for their homebuilding clients. In 2015, she launched the iconic, award-winning Black and White Luxury Collection look and campaign, and has continued to grow the brand’s luxury real estate marketing presence. Todd Tucker will become Executive Vice President for Real Estate Brokerage and Qualifying Broker. Todd joined the firm in 1997 and has had many roles over the course of his career including Top Sales Associate, Assistant Broker, Managing Broker and most recently, Senior Vice President of Operations. Mary Wargula will step into an expanded role as Senior Vice President of Brokerage Offices and Regional Manager, along with her continued leadership as Managing Broker of the North Fulton/Alpharetta office. Mary will lead Regional and Managing Brokers in continuing to support agent growth throughout their careers. Janet Mauldin is being promoted to Senior Vice President of Corporate Relocation, eager to bring Georgia Properties’ relocation business to the next level of success. As Forsman described: “These leaders are capable and ready, a team of industry innovators who will allow us to balance our nearly six decades as a market leader with fresh perspectives and continued progress.”

What do I do with my stuff? Brought to you by - Allison Kloster, Associate Broker, Home Real Estate People ask us every day, what do I do with all my stuff? As a Realtor, our job is to help you understand what the market is expecting of your home. We come meet with you and explain where the current market is and what buyers are wanting in order to make an offer. Buyers are being asked to pay a premium in addition to rising interest rates. As a result, buyers are becoming more particular and selective on what they will accept in a condition of a home. We want you to have your home shine and stand out amongst the other homes listed! Our first suggestion is usually to start with decluttering. This means putting away excess accessories or kids’ toys, KLOSTER cleaning out closets, shelves, under the cabinets and garage spaces. Once sellers begin this tedious task, we usually get a call, “Help, I have too much stuff and my kids or family members don’t want any of it!” The collections that you have spent years putting together, your dish sets that have been handed down for generation or silver plate pieces that your grandmother used for special occasions, have an immense amount of meaning to you, but perhaps not for the next generation. The current mantra is less is more and that greatly deters our kids from wanting our hand-me-downs in their homes. So… what to do…what to do? If you have a large assortment of furniture, dish sets, or art pieces, calling in a professional estate sale company is the best route. You will want to do your homework on reviews for these companies as they vary on how they work and how they earn their money. Some estate sale companies won’t let you remove anything from the home once you sign a contract with them. If that is the case, it is imperative that you have family members decide what they want prior to that first meeting with the estate sale company. Other companies will take a percentage of the

ISTOCK

sales but are more flexible with what items are included the sale. Make sure you understand that agreement. You may also want to see if the estate sale company will arrange for charity pickup after the sale, junk removal, and cleaning of the home once all items are gone. That is a complete full service for you and is certainly much easier. You can sell a lot of items on Facebook Marketplace, NextDoor, eBay,

garage sale sites, and online at www. appenmedia.com. Count on being home to meet people or have a designated safe spot like a police station to sell your wares. You can often google how much something should sell for to help you ascertain the best price. Remember, in order to sell most items, they have to be priced to be a deal. You can usually donate anything and everything, somewhere. Please do

your research on where to donate what items. There are many groups that will have sales a few times a year and the proceeds from those sales go to their organization. Find your passion in what groups you love to support and seek their advice by telling them you would like to help. They will likely direct you in a most productive path to accomplish that goal.

5 Features of a good rental investment property location

ISTOCK

Brought to you by - Bill Rawlings Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty If you’ve been considering an investment in real estate, the growth of the rental housing market provides exciting opportunities to expand your portfolio. There are a few things you’ll want to make sure are in place before you take on the additional financial commitment (like paying off debt and building up RAWLINGS your cash reserves), but once you’ve prepared for the added expense, it’s time to decide which property is right for you. While each real estate venture comes with its own unique contingencies, making sure you’ve picked a good location is a priority, and this can prove to be a complex process. A good location is not simply one that is appealing to you, especially when you’re researching a possible investment property. Here are a few objective factors to consider:

1. Look for centrality.

In general, it’s best to stay near urban areas because when cities experience population shifts, the outlying regions undergo the most severe decline in property values.

2. Analyze the neighborhood. Atlanta Fine Homes, LLC fully supports the principles of the Fair Housing Act and the Equal Opportunity Act. Each franchise is independently owned and operated. 1125 Sanctuary Parkway, Suite 400, Alpharetta, Georgia 30009.

In addition to features like grocery stores, restaurants and shops, look for access to roadways and public trans-

portation, a desirable school district and well-maintained parks and lawns.

3. Research future development.

It also pays to know whether new commercial builds, civic infrastructure or residential developments are planned for the area, as this will increase your property’s value.

4. Examine the lot.

What surrounds the lot itself can make a big impact on whether the property will be a good long-term investment. For example, is it next to a highway or a gas station? Alternatively, does it enjoy a great view or proximity to the lake?

5. Consider the house.

While a lot will always appreciate in value, the house itself will depreciate, which is why it is better to invest in a good lot or an up-and-coming neighborhood with a structure in need of some repairs than a nicer house. Whether it’s your first time or your 11th, an investment in real estate is a big step, and it pays to have a team of professionals in place to support you with knowledge and resources to help you be successful. If you would like to consult with a real estate professional on a possible investment or have any other real estate needs, please contact Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty at 770.442.7300. We would be happy to assist you! Compiled and edited by Angela Va-

OPINION

After the reunion, assessing the toll time has taken My 50th high school reunion. Is that possible? Half a century. No way. I am not sure what I expected. What I had not expected was that some had died. Of my graduating class RAY APPEN of about 75, we have Publisher Emeritus ray@appenmediagroup.com lost nine. I was surprised. One was my first roommate, and another was one of my two partners in crime. You know, the ones you got into trouble with but survived. As I thought about the nine, I guessed cancer, drugs and AIDS, and I am sure my guess was most likely spot on. I knew the reunion would be a fast forward – from 18 years old to about 70. So, everyone would have aged, and after 50 years, changed, right? Right and wrong. A few extra pounds, less hair. Yep. But changed? Nope, not really. People

don’t change much. We picked up where we left off without missing a beat. There was a lot of understated joy. There was curiosity. There was unspoken empathy. And we simply were happy to see each other again after all that time. Not knowing if and how each other had changed though, was a source of moderate anxiety for me and probably for many, as we carefully probed and conversed. The anxiety made little sense though, as we would only be together for a day and a-half then we would disappear to parts unknown again, back into separate lives somewhere else. Teachers made the reunion. Some drove the better part of a day to get to Jacksonville. They all sat at the same table, just like we tended to cluster like we did 50 years ago. My old literature teacher showed up, and I was able to thank him for giving me my love of books. Later, he shared with me that a number of former students had come up to him and expressed the same ap-

preciation. He said he was surprised and gratified. But “who knew?” he said, “who knew.\?” I later found out that he had left teaching and worked for a bank, and then moved on to real estate. “Who knew?” We knew. Why hadn’t we said something? I wanted to tell administration to get him back, now. Hit rewind and do the right thing you guys. Why did you let him leave? And part of me thinks that he also may be asking himself “why did I leave?” Time does funny things. I recall asking myself why life seems so much clearer in the rear-view mirror than it does at the time. I suppose it’s always that way, unless you are one of those who was simply born wise, born clairvoyant, but most of us are not. Time machines are funny, too. For all intents and purposes, that is what any reunion is. And you expect blatant change, and you are surprised and puzzled when it’s not there, not really. As the night went on, I kept think-

ing of Sinatra singing “My Way” as I talked to my old friends and caught up. We all had made the “big” shift – reached that summit that in so many ways was nothing like what we had expected. The 50-year span had taken us instantly from wide-eyed adolescents in that learning, playing, testing, loving and struggling mode to now past that “all everything, all-encompassing conquering mode – the “raison d’ etre” – careers, with all the sound and fury, and onto “what’s next,” in the blink of an eye. That was probably what affected me most, and Sinatra’s song, albeit not so much the banality and the regret, seemed to tell that story. “My way” perhaps was not really the way most of us traveled those 50 years, and now, at our second “at bat” we are finally figuring it out – and today, the present, “now” – comes more clearly into focus as the real mountain we should have been summiting all the while. My classmates and I are now on to post-career life. I am sure it will be

PRESERVING THE PAST

OPINION

Life in an antique kind of world Jim and Linda Farris live in an antique kind of world. They are completely influenced by history. For starters, Jim has a passion for antique cars. He is currently restoring a 1909 Cadillac Model 30 Touring BOB MEYERS Car among others. In his collection is a 1911 Maxwell Model EA Touring car and three original, unrestored beauties including a buggy manufactured in 1890 by the Luth Carriage Company. Jim collects Civil War era daguerreotype portraits in gutta-percha frames. Gutta-percha is a kind of latex from a certain type of tree that grows in Malaysia and a few other places. It is hard at room temperature, but when heated can be molded into intricate forms. It is the precursor of modern plastic. Linda has a large collection of antique Christmas ornaments collected since she was a teenager. She says, “I never met a Christmas shop that I didn’t like.” The couple lives in a historic gingerbread house on Freemanville Road built in 1899 with rare Victorian scrollwork decoration below the front porch roof. It has been designated a City of Milton Historic Site and is one of the most striking structures in the city. The scrollwork was possibly ordered from Sears-Roebuck back in the early 1900s, making the house truly one-ofa-kind. The home was originally a farmhouse built by Willis Cass Tucker, Jr. (1849-1925) on a 40-acre land lot from the 1832 government lottery of Cherokee Indian land. In 1907 Willis Cass sold the land and house to his son, Willis Rollin Tucker (1878-1963), who grew corn, watermelons and turnips for a living. The Tuckers were known to be a musical family and regularly held square dances in their barn. The house was extensively renovated in the 1970s, preserving as much of the original structure and design elements as possible. The renovated kitchen and fireplace were made of salvaged bricks, some from the original house and some stamped Key-James, a brickwork in Chattanooga founded in 1912. Jim and Linda enjoy playing antique paper music rolls on an Ellington player piano built in 1913. They tell

Jim says, “if it is a machine and old, I am interested.” A walk through their home is a voyage into the past. Perhaps the most unique aspect of living where the past comes alive every day is the collection of hundreds of historic artifacts that the couple has uncovered in their back yard. The hunt for buried artifacts began, says Jim, “the day after we moved in in 1997.” Whenever it rains, items emerge from the ground because the property is on a slope.” The couple bought a

White’s metal detector, and relic hunting soon became a family affair. When grandchildren visit, the first thing they want to do is hunt for treasures. “The excitement is palpable, and they are never disappointed,” Jim notes. Most items are found 3 to 4 inches deep. They were usually discards. There was no trash pickup back then, so objects were either thrown away or left where they fell if they ceased working. So, no coins or valuables, just everyday items that tell a story about how local people lived a century ago. Among the objects uncovered are a step from a buggy, a pot belly stove

door, an oil lamp from a Model T Ford, heavy chains, plow blades, big bolts and many pieces of pottery and chunks of coal. Jim was employed by Southern Railway Company and later its successor, Norfolk Southern Corporation, in the law and finance division. Later he established his private law practice in Roswell, while Linda was a manager in crew management in the transportation division of Norfolk Southern Corporation before they retired. Bob is the Milton Historical Society Director Emeritus. You can email him at bobmey@bellsouth.net.

In Memoriam

Fusun O. Talbot

Fusun O. Talbot, 69, of Roswell, GA passed away on May 3 at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Fusun was born July 9, 1952, in Ankara, Turkey. She spent part of her childhood years in England and then France where her father, a Colonel in the Turkish military, was stationed as part of the NATO alliance. She attended school in her younger years in England and France. After her father’s tenure in Europe, her family returned to Turkey where she continued her education, ending with a degree in journalism from Ankara College. She was fluent in the Turkish, French and English languages and had an understanding of Italian. Fusun had several interesting jobs in Turkey. At different times she worked in the Delegation of the European Union, the United Nations office and the International Labor Organization. Her final job in Turkey was at the Canadian Embassy where she worked in the immigration office. She met her husband James A. ( Jim) Talbot in Ankara, Turkey in April 1987 where he was working on a short-term project. He first saw her at a going away party for a cohort as she was leaving. Jim and his friend George Page, who was working at the same location, moved on to another party they heard about. As Jim was walking in, Fusun was leaving. He said, “you can’t leave, I just got here.” She smiled and said she had to go. While Fusun said this was where they met, Jim

said they actually met at happy hour at the British Embassy a couple of weeks later. He walked in, she was talking to a friend, he went over and introduced himself. They eventually went to dinner from the embassy and that’s where it all began. Jim moved back to the US, but they continued corresponding with her making a trip to Georgia to see him. They were married on December 3, 1988, in Dunwoody, Georgia. Fusun owned and operated Anatolian House in Roswell for 5 years with the help of her husband and during that time received a degree in interior design. She then moved the store to Plum Tree Village in Roswell and renamed it Uniquities, which was closed at the end of 2017 after 15 years. She loved doing interior design work and made several friends through the store. She was also an excellent cook and host and enjoyed gardening and entertaining. She will be greatly missed by friends in the US and Turkey. A light in the world is missing. Fusun was preceded in death by her parents, father Irfan and mother Muazzez Ozacar and brothers Ajlan Ozacar and Atilla Ozacar. She is survived in the US by her husband Jim, sons Scott Talbot and wife Heather, Spencer Talbot and wife Hillary and grandsons Taylor and Toby Talbot and Connor Love. She is survived in Turkey by sister-in-law Mine Ozacar, niece Ruya Kip and hushand Mehmet, nephew Arda Ozacar and wife Gozde, nieces Ece Kip and Deniz Ozacar and nephews Ege Kip and Mert Ozacar.
