ROSWELL, Ga. — Retired Battalion Chief Edwin Vickery is suing the City of Roswell for unpaid overtime and breach of contract. In the federal lawsuit filed July 28, he alleges the city misclassified him and other battalion chiefs as overtime-exempt employees, which violates of the Fair Labor Standards Act and state laws. The city filed a response Aug. 22, claiming no wrongdoing. It asks that the case be dismissed, and that Vick ery pay all of its costs and expenses of litigation.Vickery, who retired in April, started working at the Roswell Fire Department in 2007. At one point, he also held the position of fire captain. The lawsuit comes just days before Chief of Administration Shane Dobson is set to join the Roswell Fire Department and two months after the City Council approved funding to begin transitioning the public safety agency from part-time to full-time.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell police stopped a 24-year-old Riverdale man Aug. 7 for having an “extremely dark window tint,” but let him go even after discovering mari juana and drug paraphernalia inside his vehicle. The incident report states that at around 9:10 a.m. a sergeant with the Roswell Police Department was near 1500 Market Blvd. when he heard a car with a loud exhaust but no mufflers as is required by law. It wasn’t until the light turned green that a black cover where the tag should have been slid up and exposed the tag number. According to the incident report, after conducting a traffic stop on the vehicle, the sergeant used a digital tint meter, which indicated an illegal window tint of 3 percent. While speaking with the 24-yearold man and his 22-year-old passenger, the sergeant reported smelling the odor of burntThemarijuana.incidentreport states the sergeant asked both individuals to step out of the car, which is when he allegedly found a black bag in the trunk with approximately 2.5 grams of marijuana, a multi-colored glass bond and a blue marijuana grinder. All of the items were seized as contraband. The 24-year-old man was charged with no exhaust and concealing his tag but was not arrested. He was given a warning on the illegal window tint and possession of marijuana.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — With a little time, planning and money, Alpharetta’s North Point Corridor will look radically differ ent a decade from now, according to new proposals under consideration before the CityCouncilCouncil.members heard an up date Aug. 22 on plans to redesign the streetscape on North Point Parkway to de-emphasize vehicle traffic, add new bi cycle and pedestrian infrastructure and connect the area with the Alpha Loop and Big Creek Greenway.
ALEX POPP/APPEN MEDIA
Tom Ziegler of Columbia Engineer ing, which is designing the project, told council members that their recommen dation is to reduce North Point Parkway from six to four travel lanes, while add ing 12 foot wide “shared use” paths on either side of the roadway. Ziegler said combined with improved bicycle and pedestrian crossings, and other amenities for non-auto-centric uses, the city could bolster local efforts to make North Point more attractive and in line with the long-range plan for the corridor.“When we do this project successfully together … we’re going to be accepting awards in several years for what’s going to be accomplished along this corridor,” he said. “This is not your normal road project … this is a game-changer.” In addition to adding more diverse travel options and interconnectivity to the area, Ziegler said the project will focus on adding extensive landscape features to the corridor and implement ing green infrastructure, while having as little impact as possible on the existing environment.Evenwith the anticipated growth the area may see in the next two decades, project designers believe that a four-lane plan will fit traffic needs of the commu nity.“We feel like we have roughly 20 to 30 percent of additional capacity on the four-lane version,” he said. Ziegler said that they also explored a six-lane option for the redesign, which would reduce the width of existing lanes, but would maintain three lanes in each direction. With this option, they would still be able to install multi-use paths, but impacts on other areas of the streetscape would be much more pronounced.AfterZiegler’s presentation, council members shared their thoughts on the project design, many voicing their sup port for the four-lane design.
“This city has a history of doing big things great and great things big,” Coun cilman John Hippes said. “Avalon is here, it’s not elsewhere. And it was done thoughtfully.”Butseveral council members said they were concerned that a four-lane version of the roadway wouldn’t handle traffic in the area, if demand exceeded what Columbia Engineering has project ed for the next 20 years.

Before the woman’s bank cards could be frozen and cancelled, $6,574 had been spent on her account at the Apple Store in Alpharetta and $1,136 had been purchased at Nordstrom. Several other charges were attempted but were not completed.Thewoman said she believes her cards were stolen from her purse while shop ping at the Kroger on Ga. 9 in Alpharetta earlier in the day. No suspects were identified by police at the time of the report.
In addition to his claims related to the Fair Labor Standards Act, Vick ery raises a breach of contract claim related to employee benefits he says he should have received at the time of his retirement.Vickery states that while he was still with the Fire Department, there was a policy that both exempt and non-exempt firefighters could accrue paid time off each pay period and that it would be paid out upon their sepa ration from employment. There was also a policy, he states, that employees would be compensated for holidays regardless of whether they worked the holiday.Vickery states the city has only paid him a portion of his accrued PTO and refused to pay the rest. Additionally, he claims that in January, Fire Chief Joe Pennino unilaterally eliminated holiday pay for battalion chiefs, including all accrued holiday pay/leave time.
Pending litigation A similar lawsuit was filed against the City of Roswell five years ago by former part-time firefighters David Bible and Brian Rogers. The city also denied it treated parttime firefighters unfairly in that case. But, in 2020, a Fulton County Superior Court judge allowed the law suit to be upgraded to a class action involving “all persons currently and/ or formerly employed as firefighters by the Roswell Fire Department between August 29, 2011, and August 29, 2017, who worked 40 hours or more per standard work week and did not receive benefits provided to regular full-timeBenefitsemployees.”includeholiday pay, paid time off, paid sick leave and certain retirement benefits. The notice of the pending class action lawsuit states they had until Feb. 2 to decide whether they wanted to stay in the lawsuit or be excluded and get no benefits from it. It is unclear how many former part-time firefighters joined the class action, but in 2019, the city filed a motion in which it stated that records show Roswell employed more than 100 firefighters during that time. It also stated that in 2000, the city converted from a system of employing mostly full-time firefighters with some reliance on volunteers to a system of employing “a significant number” of part-time firefighters who are not entitled to the same benefits as those who are full-time to cut approximately $8 million from its budget.

Vickery alleges that as battalion chief he would often perform other jobs like respond to any call in which more than one engine was sent and to all mass casualty and gunshot wound calls. The suit states Vickery often worked shifts of 24 hours, followed by 48 hours of being off duty, which is the same work schedule as all other firefighters.Vickeryclaims in the suit he was not paid any overtime for working more than 212 hours in any given 28-day workHeperiod.states that had the city not misclassified Vickery, his overtime pay would have been reflected in his W-2 forms for 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022.
before Chief of Administration Shane Dobson is set to join the Roswell Fire Depart ment, retired Battalion Chief Edwin Vickery is now suing the City of Roswell for unpaid overtime and breach of contract.
Alleged misclassification
The fire department’s policy and procedure manual states battalion chiefs are required to respond to emer gency calls such as all structural fires, smoke calls where smoke is visible in side a structure, gas leak calls, hazard ous material calls, bomb threat calls, and water and rope rescue calls.
Bible worked at the Roswell Fire Department in various capacities, in cluding as a firefighter, fire lieutenant, fire captain and emergency medical technician, from 1992 until his retire ment in 2017. Rogers worked in the department from 2007 to 2018 as a firefighter, fire captain and paramedic. The case continues to make its way through the court. There are several hearings scheduled from now and October that seem to indicate the city “lost data” that could have been relevant to the case, according to court records.Atrial for the case is set to start in December. DAYS

While the implementation will take place over the next five years, it is set to start by hiring 21 full-time fire captains.According to the lawsuit, the City of Roswell employs approximately 225 firefighters of various ranks and oper ates seven fire stations. It also has three battalion chiefs, with one being on duty at any given time.
Vickery states the amount of pension he is allegedly owed is based in part on the highest 36 month’s pay over a seven-year period.
Vickery states accrual of this type of leave had been awarded since September 2010. Before he retired, he was earning approximately $47.22 per hour.“In reliance upon the express writ ten terms of the Compensatory Time Policy, Plaintiff (Vickery) saved his accrued PTO and Holiday leave rather than use it in an effort to maximize his payout upon his retirement,” the law suit states. “Plaintiff would have used and would not have saved his accrued PTO and Holiday leave had he known Defendant would refuse to pay him for theseVickery’shours.”allegations relative to the payment of accrued PTO do not fall under the Fair Labor Standards Act, because it does not require employ ers to provide employees with any paid time off. However, state law may require an employer to compensate an employee for accrued paid leave at the time of separation.

The Georgia Composite Board of Pro fessional Counselors, Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists states it received allegations from another client in June 2021, who indicated that they had done similar things and that their rela tionship had lasted until January 2022. Then, in March, a third client came forward, alleging that Dennis had picked him up from school and allowed him to stay in her home. A warrant for Dennis’ arrest in con nection to the first victim’s allegations was issued Aug. 2. Court records state that same client filed a complaint for damages in Fulton County Superior Court against Dennis and Simplicity Wellness in Alpharetta in November 2020, but the case was dismissed less than a year later. In the Aug. 12 summary detailing the reasoning behind the suspension of Dennis’ license, the board states an appointed peer reviewer determined her conduct fell below the minimal standards of acceptable and prevailing practice.
ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An Alpharetta pro fessional counselor is accused of having intimate relationships with at least three of her male clients while they were in therapy or shortly thereafter.
By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com
Mary Kathryn Dennis, 51, was ar rested Aug. 4 and charged with a felony count of improper sexual contact by an employee or agent in the first degree. Jail records indicate the offense may have oc curred in December 2019.
“Specifically, the peer reviewer deter mined, in part, that Respondent (Dennis), during the course of her therapeutic rela tionships referenced above, not only com mitted numerous boundary violations but also encouraged and participated in harmful dual relationships with respect to clients … as well as their respective families,” it states. The board found that allowing Den nis to continue to practice as a licensed professional counselor posed a “threat to public health, safety and welfare.” Dennis could not be reached for comment.
Alpharetta counselor charged with improper sexual contact
It is also alleged that Dennis may have hired her client to work in her office as an intern while he was in therapy and rou tinely socialized with his family, including accompanying them on vacations.
Dennis, who is also listed as Mary Katherine, made her first court appear ance Aug. 5. A Fulton County Superior Court judge granted her a $75,000 surety bond and she was released that same day.At the time of her arrest, she was working at New Era Healthcare in Alpharetta.According to the Licensing Division of the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office, Dennis’ license as a professional counsel or was suspended Aug. 12 after the board received a complaint alleging numerous counts of unprofessional contact in June 2021 with respect to her therapeutic treatment and services. Records show Dennis’ license was issued in November 2020 and was set to expire in September. She was issued a license to practice as an associate profes sional counselor in December 2016. But, sometime around February 2017 and 2020, it is alleged that Dennis committed “multiple boundary violations and engaged in harmful dual relation ships” with one of her clients by allowing him to visit her family home, move in with her for an extended period of time for “life therapy” and providing him with controlled substances that were not pre scribed to him.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Construction of Roswell’s Historic Gateway project has been pushed to 2026. Additionally, at a joint work session with the City Council Aug. 22, Jason Hudson, chairman of the Transportation Advisory Commission, said the total cost for the project has jumped from $50 million to $58 million. The project, introduced in 2008, was scheduled to begin construction in 2023. It was already two years behind schedule. The project was designed by the Ro swell Department of Transportation. Plans call for widening Atlanta Street from three lanes to four, adding new turn lanes and roundabouts, and eliminating the reversible lanes that run along the road, including a middle lane that runs from near downtown to the Chattahoochee River and is reversed each day to carry rush-hour traffic. For years, residents have said they are worried the current design could shut down local businesses and enable cut-through traffic from Cobb County. Residents have also said the project could make it unsafe for nearby residents to pull out from their neighborhoods and destroy the city’s tree canopy.

While Jung didn’t start out as a fencer, he said he learned from his father-inlaw. In 2013, when he began teaching, he honed his skills by practicing with his students. Jung and Annie have coached at Lambert, South Forsyth and Peachtree Ridge high schools and continue to coach at Mill Creek, Denmark and Alpharetta highJungschools.said there are two high school leagues in Georgia, with the Georgia High School Fencing League the most popu lar in Fulton County and Onguard High School Fencing League taking precedence in Gwinnett County. Many of the students who take up the sport at Olympic Fencers Club are high schoolers who are looking for one more thing to add to their resume before applying to college. Some of them have gone on to be recruited to fence at Princeton, Penn State and the U.S. Air Force Academy. Jung said he and Annie have taught other disci plines, but now they mainly focus on épée, because it is the easiest for volunteers to referee, and it is what’s mostly offered at the local high schools. “I’m a sportsman,” Jung said. “I love this sport. Before I started fencing, I loved to swim and ski, but fencing is totally different. Swimming is just to try to break my own record. I’m fighting with myself. With fencing, I need a partner and every single opponent is different, so I need a new plan. It’s like chess. We need to focus more than 100 percent, and that is very tiring, but it’s a good feeling.” His students agree. Nicole Moon, a junior at Lambert High School, started fencing in middle school, because she saw the sport on a TV show, and it captured her interest. This year, she is co-captain of her school’s team. How ever, she said last year was the first time both the women’s and men’s teams at Lambert High won gold, which was a huge accomplishment. She said she owes it all to her coaches, Jung and Annie.
JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The students at Olympic Fencers Club say what keeps them practicing the sport is the fun com munity around them. But, working with Olympians and win ning regional and national championships helpsFencingtoo. is a sport derived from duel ing, played by two opponents on a strip or ‘piste’ 2 meters by 12 meters long. The goal is to score ‘hits’ or ‘touches’ on an opponent. The first player to score a given number of hits – usually between five and 15 – wins the bout. The three disciplines in modern fencing are foil, épée and sabre. In 2010, coaches Henry Jung and An nie Lee opened Olympic Fencers Club on Medlock Bridge Road in Johns Creek after moving to the U.S. from Korea five years earlier. Since then, it has been ranked the No. 1 club in the U.S. Fencing: Georgia Division for seven consecutive years. It has approximately 220 students. Back in Korea, Jung and Annie met while competing on teams at the Korean National Sports University. Jung was a swimmer and Annie a fencer. Annie’s fa ther, Kun Bae Lee, was a professor at the school and served as the head coach for the Korean national fencing team for 15 years. He has received numerous awards over the years for his critical role in the development of Korean style fencing. In fact, Korea has grown into a fencing powerhouse, having won five gold medals, three silver and eight bronze in Olympic fencing. It is tied with China as the Asian country with the most gold medals. Kung Bae and Korean Olympic fencers visit Olympic Fencers Club throughout the year to work with the students, which they say is an invaluable experience.

“Fencing is a huge part of me now, because I have done it for a long time and it’s super fun,” Jeannie said. “Being in fencing energizes me, gives me motiva tion and allows me to just keep pushing myself. It all depends on what you want to get out of it. The coaches here will match your needs 100 percent whether you’re a beginner wanting to have fun and exercise or looking to compete.”

“How do you know how deep to go?”
One of the most common questions that patients ask before Mohs surgery is how the surgeon knows the depth to cut. Mohs surgery is a method for cur ing skin cancer that involves removing tissue in layers. But how does the Mohs surgeon know how much to remove each time? The answer to that question has layers of its own. Mohs surgery is performed on many different locations on the body, so the answer to how deep to cut varies by location. If a cancer is the size of a plum and on someone’s back, then the Mohs surgeon’s first stage will be cut as a relatively thick layer. In contrast, if the skin cancer is on the edge of someone’s eyelid, then the Mohs surgeon will cut a very thin layer of tissue – often only a millimeter thick on each side of the tumor – in order to preserve as much healthy eyelid as possible. The details on the biopsy report influence the depth of cancer resection. Some basal cell carcinomas are char acterized as “superficial type.” These cancers usually grow on the surface like moss on a tree, and deep cutting is often unnecessary. For other tumors, the pathologist may say the “deep margin” is involved. This means that the cancer went to the bottom of the biopsy. The Mohs surgeon cuts deeper on the first layer to ensure a level below the biopsy’s depth.Sometimes, the surgeon can even feel the likely thickness of a cancer with (glove-covered) bare hands. Some tumors feel like a thick disk that is growing wide, not deep. Others feel like icebergs with abundant tumor lurking below. One of the most important factors affecting second and subsequent layers is the amount of cancer seen under the microscope. If a tiny spot of cancer is left, then only a small amount of addi tional tissue removal may be necessary. In other cases, strands of cancer are dif fusely visible under the microscope, and the surgeon knows that a substantial next cut is necessary to make progress. Sometimes, when patients ask me how I know how deep to cut, I think that what they are asking is not what was discussed above but rather how I know how deep not to cut. How does the doctor know where the critical nerves or arteries are? The answer to that ques tion is all the years of training focused on anatomy and experience gained dur ing residency, fellowship and in practice.
Brought to you by – Brent Taylor, MD
Mohs surgeons are expected to learn what layers of tissue are present in dif ferent locations and where the “danger zones” of critical nerves or blood vessels are. When a Mohs surgeon anticipates that an important structure is at risk, the Mohs surgeon will generally discuss this with the patient in advance of cut ting and give the patient the opportu nity to weigh the risks and benefits of proceeding.Wehope that this article was helpful and interesting. But a word of caution: please remember that this discussion of Mohs surgery is not exhaustive. Do not try this at home!

“During the early part of the pandemic, when the club was closed, I was just sit ting at home, not getting the same kind of exercise, and I could feel my body slowing down,” Aton said. “I felt five years older. Finally, after almost a year, when I started fencing again, it took four months of fenc ing, but I got back up to feeling normal.” Jung said the club closed for about three months in 2020. Until a year ago, not all of their original fencers had come back, but since November of last year, new students have continued to sign up. Jean nie added that she thinks fencing is one of the most “COVID-friendly” sports, because students wear a mask over their head and are forced to keep a distance between them and their opponent.

The Forsyth Commerce Center, off Ga. 9 and Ga. 400 in south Forsyth, will eventually contain six industrial build ings at full buildout. Phase I of the project includes two building totaling 359,000 square feet that are expected to be com pleted in October, according to the Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce.
“We have had some big wins over the last few years, and it is only the begin ning,” he McDonaldstated.Development Company is leading the Forsyth Commerce Center project, and previously built developments in the north Fulton County and greater Atlanta area, including parts of the Windward Business Park in Alpharetta.

Aton said he loves that fencing is one of the few sports that parents can do with their kids. He said another thing he enjoys is that they can be within 6 to 8 feet of “all the action” at tournaments. Plus, he said, it’s a great form of exercise.
“Forsyth Commerce Center is an overall $75 million investment in Forsyth County,” James McCoy, president and CEO of the Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce said in a statement. “We know that interest in the space is extremely high, and we will continue to work closely with McDonald Development Company to help support their investment in our com munity.”Thisproject continues a growing trend of industrial development projects that Forsyth County has seen in recent years, county officials said. The trend is expected to continue, due to recent local invest ments in water and sewer projects for industrial“Forsythdevelopments.Countyisasafe investment for commercial developers with an eye toward high quality companies with high quality talent,” Forsyth County District 2 Commissioner Alfred John said.
Vertical construction begins at Forsyth Commerce Center
“So, while other sports require close contact and you might be scared of doing the sport during the pandemic, I think fencing provides such a good alternative for exercise, and it’s a very clean environ ment that we keep here,” Jeannie said. Olympic Fencers Club offers a free beginner class every Friday for all ages, starting at 5 years old. After that, students can join either the beginners class, kids class, or teen and adult class. Rates range from $150 a month for one class a week to $220 a month for unlimited classes, plus a one-time registration fee of $49. Equip ment is available to rent. “The hopper is going to be unattended. It’s an honesty policy,” he said. “But there will be a license plate reader and camera so we can monitor that and make sure that people are utilizing the facility prop erly.”The project would cost about $15,000 a year for Republic Services to dispose of the glass, plus a one-time fee of $2,000 to purchase the recycling hopper.
Alpharetta Community Development Director Kathi Cook said the city has about $15 million in grant and TSPLOST funding for the project. But she said they still have $25 million in grant funding that hasn’t been awarded yet.
CITY OF ALPHARETTA/PROVIDED Plans show a streetscape that would make North Point Parkway a four-lane road, lined with large multi-use paths.
While Roswell was originally on the hook for nearly $9 million budgeted for the project, that total now sits at $13 million. Broken down, $2.9 million would go for “city required aesthetics,” $3 million for work that runs through a national park, $5.1 million for design and $2 million to secure an Atlanta Re gional Commission grant.
opportunity for Roswell to redesign the project.“The answer is yes, we do have the opportunity to redesign it, but whether or not that redesign is accepted is a whole other matter,” Wilson said. “I think some questions that we need to put into consideration is how long the redesign potentially will cost in terms of time and how much it will cost us.”

“To me, that math doesn’t work,” Councilman Brian Will said. “I trust you, you’re the expert, but I don’t see those numbersZieglerwork.”estimated that the four-lane option will cost roughly $35 million to complete. The other six-lane option would come in at about $45 million, he said.
Old Rucker Park will be designed by Columbia Engineering at a cost of $357,900. The design process will take approximately one year. Union Hill Park’s redesign was award ed to Dix.Hite Partners for $336,500. Sew czwicz said the design process for Union Hill Park will also take about one year.
The contracts, according to Alpharetta Director of Public Works Pete Sewczwicz, will redesign the two parks, adding trail systems, park facilities, amenities and parking to the projects.
Wilson said the City Council is inter ested in narrowing the road to slow traf fic and enhancing the quality of life for residents, but that from his perspective it was already 25 years in the making. He said there remain a lot of consider ations city officials would need to make moving forward to avoid dragging it out. In other business at the Aug. 22 work session, Wilson said GDOT has denied the city’s request to amend the project on the Grimes Bridge Road corridor.Plans currently call for the construc tion of Ga. 400 access lanes at Grimes Bridge Road. The interchange will be one of four access points planned for the express lanes project on the northsouth freeway. Residents say it will likely increaseTransportationtraffic. Advisory Commission member Marisa Pereira said at a meeting in July that she wants the interchange nixed from project designs and for the city to possibly allow citizens to vote on the project again, given the number of changes that have been made to it over the But,years.Wilson said, GDOT indicated it’s too “Atlate.the end of the day, the commis sioner (McMurry) made it very clear to myself and the rest of the Roswell team the ship has sailed for that project,” Wilson said. “According to the 2019 [In tergovernmental Agreement] and [Memo randum of Agreement], there’s an under standing between the previous elected body … and the State of Georgia that it is technically a GDOT project, and the prin cipal answer to our request for looking at amending the project was denied.” However, once the project is finished, Wilson said the Transportation Advisory Commission will be allowed to look at traffic calming options on the roads that belong to Roswell.
GDOT is also still acquiring right of way for the project. Only 12 of the 67 private parcels needed have been acquired. Seven options are pending, and seven more parcels are waiting to be condemned. GDOT needs the parcels to clear nearly 60 feet of space.
SCREENSHOT
Ziegler said the project could be com pleted in two phases, to cut the funding initially needed in half. Construction on the two phases would be split in half at Encore Parkway and the city could chose to start at either Mansell Road or Haynes Bridge Road to begin Phase 1.
Cook said that they could also fund the project through private development and impact fee credits, like what was done with the Alpha Loop project. But to get to the point where that’s possible, she said they would need to progress the project designs through several more phases and adopt a specific plan. No vote was taken on the matter.
Glass recycling solution Also at the meeting, Councilman Doug DeRito reported on the city’s continuing efforts to offer glass recycling. DeRito said that after talks with city staff, they decided to install a self-service, glass recycling hopper at the Alpharetta Public Works Facility off Hembree Road. The recycling hopper would be open to all city residents and would be emptied twice a week by city employees.
Park design services Council members also awarded two design contracts for upcoming redevelop ment projects at Old Rucker Park and Union Hill Park.

The Historic Gateway project is intended to widen Atlanta Street from three lanes to four, add new turn lanes and roundabouts, and eliminate the reversible lanes.
“This is probably the most cost-effi cient glass recycling program that the city could have,” DeRito said. No vote was taken on this project.

The Holcombe Machine Shop has become a local landmark. Fannie and Otis Holcombe sit at a table with some of their German Pink and Big Boy tomatoes in 1999.
Fannie Holcombe – four generations strong
PHOTOS BY HOLCOMBE FAMILY/PROVIDED Ebenezer School on Ebenezer Road was a two-room school that housed students from grades 1 through 6. It closed in 1933 and was consolidated with Northwest ern Elementary School.
Rodney Reese, Fannie’s grandnephew, recalls annual family reunions, usually at the home of Fannie’s sister Bertha Etris Cook (1902–2011) at her home on Etris Road. Bertha passed away at age 108. “It was a very close-knit family,” Rod neyWhensays. asked how the world has changed over the decades, Fannie says “back then, everyone went outside and played. Today, it is all about iPhones. Families visited one another, and when ever anyone needed help, the community pitchedBobbyin.”says “a handshake was a sign of trust.”Words to live by.
Fannie Holcombe was born in 1919 on Etris Road in Milton County. One of 11 children, she learned the meaning of hard work at an early age. Her father Wil liam Samuel Etris (1875–1956) grew cotton and corn on 40 acres. Corn was for turning into meal in their grist mill to feed the cows. He would also grind corn for neighbors in exchange for a portion of the meal. Cotton was the cash“Oh,crop.how my back hurt picking cot ton on my knees” Fannie recalls. Yes, she crawled between the rows of cotton because the large sack strapped around her shoulder had to be dragged along the ground and would weigh 100 pounds when full of picked cotton. Planting cotton was a complex, multi stage process involving a lot of plowing be hind a mule and a lot of hoeing by hand. Cotton growing and picking was a sun-up to sun-down job in the hot Georgia sun. Fannie’s son Bobby also remembers picking cotton. He says the cotton boll “would eat up your hand.” A cotton boll is made up of separate compartments in which up to 300 seeds grow. To pick the cotton from the bolls, Bobby had to twist the cotton out of the boll which was very sharp and would cut your hand if the cot ton was not twisted correctly. The family also operated a dairy farm with about 75 cows for about five years in the 1950s. They raised Guernsey, Jersey and Holstein cows and sold their milk to the Creatwood Farm Dairy in Smyrna. When young Fannie went to Ebenezer School in Roswell, after milking the cows before breakfast, she had to walk half a mile from her house to catch the school bus. One room of the two-room wooden schoolhouse accommodated grades 1 through 3 and the other housed grades 4 through 6. Each room had a woodburn ing stove. The curriculum was reading, writing and arithmetic.

Fannie married Otis Holcombe (1916–2006) in 1939. He was raised on a farm on Providence Road in the Providence Community and was a trained machinist and mechanic. They had five children, 10 grandchildren – one deceased – and seven great-grandchildren. They lived initially on Cox Road, then on King Road in Milton. In 1960, they purchased a property on Mayfield Road. The previous owner, James Cash, was an automobile me chanic who built a concrete block work shop near his house. The workshop has become a local landmark with its faded sign HOLCOMBE’S MACHINE SHOP on the front exterior wall. People often stop by to have graduation photos taken in front of the workshop where Otis used to make small items for friends and custom ers. He obtained the necessary saws and other pieces of equipment from Elliot’s Business Machine Company in Atlanta where he was employed. Later he joined Simmons Engineering, a company in Roswell and Dallas that made machines for chicken processing plants, until his retirement.Fannie’s daughter, Kay Bagley, says that her father “would come home from work, go to the shop and make bowls, roll ing pins, jewelry and even a tractor” which the family still has parked by the shop.

Fannie then attended Northwestern Elementary School, which was located where the Milton Community Church is today on Birmingham Highway. The school closed in 1992. She graduated from Milton High School in 1938. Fannie is a remarkable 102 years old. Physically strong and agile, she enjoys sewing and solving up to 1,000-piece puzzles which she can finish in three or four days. She is totally committed to the Atlanta Braves, so much so that the team sent her a Braves baseball cap on her 100thAccordingbirthday.to the U.S. Census Bu reau, in 2021 there were almost 98,000 centenarians in the United States. Bad news for our male readers, 83 percent of centenarians were female. The number reaching the century mark grew substan tially from 53,000 in 2010, but centenar ians still represent a very small percent age of the total population and a smaller percentage than in many other countries.
