World War II veteran keeps history alive 100-year-old author recounts experiences By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — World War II veteran Franklyn E. Dailey Jr., is known as a “national treasure” among the residents and staff at Mansions at Alpharetta Senior Independent Living. At 100 years old, the retired U.S. Navy Reserves captain is one of the last of his generation, and through his firsthand experience, exemplifies how rare it is to make the ultimate sacrifice. Dailey is also the author of three books — “My Times with the Sisters,” “Joining the War at Sea, 1939-1945” and “The Triumph of Instrument Flight: A Retrospective in the Century of U.S. Aviation.” On Veterans Day, Dailey recounted his experience during World War II to a room full of his fellow residents and honored guests including members of the North Fulton Veterans Society. This was the first time Mansions at Alpharetta Senior Independent Living had a featured speaker for Veterans Day, and Activities Director Holly Barnes said they were fortunate to have Dailey speak. “Folks at Frank’s age are not hanging around too much anymore, so we are blessed,” Barnes said. Born in February 1921 in Rochester, New York, Dailey is the oldest of two children and the only veteran in his family. His grandparents immigrat-

Alpharetta council moves to ease limits on alcohol licenses for elected officials By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmedia.com

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The Alpharetta City Council began clearing the way for a smooth transition of power in January when two new members are set to be sworn in. The council voted on first reading Nov. 15 to rescind portions of the city’s alcohol beverages ordinance that might have created problems for local restaurateur and Councilman-elect Brian Will. Chapter 4 of the City Code currently prohibits issuance of alcohol licenses to any city employee or elected or appointed city official or to any member of their immediate family. The new ordinance, scheduled for final approval Nov. 29, would eliminate the restriction on elected officials and most city employees and members of appointed boards. It was the second time this year the measure has been brought before the City Council. In June, the proposal failed by a 3-3 vote. At that time, Will, who had already declared as a candidate for City Council, said he was disappointed by the vote. He cited an opinion from then-City Attorney Sam Thomas who called the

Suspect in kidnapping nabbed in Sandy Springs

Street racer fires gun along residential street

ROSWELL, Ga. — A patrol officer foiled a possible kidnapping when he heard a woman’s screams from a passing car near Market Boulevard and Raintree Drive before dawn Nov. 6. The officer referenced notes he’d received from a 911 call in which the dispatcher reported all they could hear was a woman screaming before the call abruptly disconnected. The officer responded to the area of the call, rolled his windows down and listened. He heard screams as he passed a Mitsubishi Ghibli at a stop sign on Raintree Drive. The car peeled away and the officer gave chase. The pursuit eventually reached Ga. 400 where the suspect hit speeds in excess of 100 mph. Officers lost sight of the vehicle near the I-285 connector. Sandy Springs police and Georgia State Patrol managed to apprehend the driver on Northside Drive in Sandy Springs The suspect was identified as Jevon Maurice Graham, 44, of Lithonia. Officers found him walking with a visibly injured woman. Police charged Graham with false imprisonment, battery, fleeing/attempting to elude, obstruction and suspended or revoked license. Paramedics rushed the victim to North Fulton Hospital to be treated.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Police responded to Tyson Circle on Nov. 1 to follow up with a resident who reported street racing near his home. The complainant told officers he called the police around 8 p.m. Oct. 28 after the racers sped through his neighborhood. One of the drag racers who was driving a white sports car fired several shots outside the vehicle while speeding along Old Alabama Road. The man said he saw the same car racing past his home the afternoon of Nov. 1. Police requested extra patrols in the area. A search for shell casings turned up nothing.

Wilson campaign signs damaged before election

ROSWELL, Ga. — Hours before Kurt Wilson was elected Roswell’s next mayor on Nov. 2, one of his campaign assistants reported damage to some of his political signs. The assistant told officers several of Wilson’s signs at the intersection of

Storage units breached at apartment complex ROSWELL, Ga. — Police were called to the Lake House at Martin’s Landing on Nov. 2 after reports that several storage units had been burglarized at the apartment complex along Harbor Landing. A property manager showed officers a storage room with broken locks where several residents’ belongings were scattered about. It was one of three storage rooms that had been burglarized. A maintenance worker said the locks were ripped off the doors Oct. 29. One of the residents reported the thieves took a Trek bicycle valued at $700 and about $500 worth of jewelry. Proprietors at the apartment complex were not sure which residents rented the two other units, police said.

Joe Nathan Baldwin, 26, of Horton Drive, Roswell, was arrested Nov. 5 on Alpharetta Street for DUI and inmates bringing prohibited items within guard line. Hannibal Y. Rickerson, 36, of Mountain Creek Drive, Roswell, was arrested Nov. 7 on Alpharetta Parkway for unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and possession of drug related objects. from a kiosk in the North Point Mall overnight Nov. 3. The kiosk owner said he shut down his jewelry booth around 7 p.m. and wrapped it in a tarpaulin. But he failed to padlock the tarpaulin to the floor, according to police. The victim reported 15 gold and silver necklaces missing from his display case, which was locked when he discovered the theft. The owner said there was no forced entry so the thieves must have used a key to get into the display case. Police checked with mall security for any available surveillance footage that may have shown the alleged theft.

ROSWELL, Ga. — The Roswell City Council has deferred until later this month a rezoning request for a luxury senior living community on 13.2 acres near the city’s boundary with Milton. The Nov. 8 vote was the second time the application has been deferred after residents again raised concerns about its potential impact on the area. Grovont Partners, an Alabama-based developer, submitted an application in June to construct a 275,000-square-foot independent and assisted living facility with memory care support at 12740 and 12770 Arnold Mill Road. But when the application went before the Planning Commission in August, the request to rezone the properties from agriculture to neighborhood mixed-use was denied. Grovont then requested a deferral at the September City Council meeting before returning Nov. 8 to pitch the project again. Sarah Gregory, the project’s architect and director of senior living for CJMW Architecture, said the goal with the facility is to serve the growing population of seniors in Roswell. According to the Census Bureau, 15% of the existing population in Roswell is over 65. Gregory said that percentage will only continue to grow. If approved, the private high-end senior living facility would provide aging-in-place opportunities with a hospitality-focused atmosphere, including multiple on-site dining venues as well as fitness, massage and salon services. Gregory said it would be able to house more than 200 residents averaging in age from 80 to 85. The site plan also preserves 3.2 acres of densely wooded land with tree preservation buffers at the south and west property lines. The exterior reflects the community and style with familiar residential patterns that weave into the existing neighborhood community, Gregory said. But, neither the City Council nor residents were convinced by Gregory’s presentation to allow the project to move forward. Resident Brian Chapman said he was concerned about the “very dangerous curve” between Etris and Cagle roads where Grovont wants to build the facility, considering that senior citizens, staff and visitors would be driving in and out of an already congested area. Several residents repeated those concerns and questioned whether the existing

sewage system could support the facility. Resident Sue DuPart brought up the lack of dentist offices, restaurants and other business establishments nearby which would make it more convenient for visitors to take their loved ones when they visit. Resident Janet Russell said the city would also need to invest in more ambulances to respond to the increased number of calls because of the nature of the facility, and she highlighted the lack of public transportation for employees who do not earn enough to live in Alpharetta, Roswell or Milton. Another resident, Jennifer Chapman, asked the council to consider preserving the natural landscape of the properties. “At this point, people who want to own property cannot even compete with the out-of-town developers,” Chapman said. “… Can we not have something set aside for the citizens or does it all, at this point, go to the developers who can swoop in with the money and change the land? Maybe they’ll do it with their natural colors or even natural materials, but you’re never going to get that nature back again. … I just hope that before you make your decision you think about the Roswell citizens and how we feel versus the developers.” Staff said although Milton has a fire station across the street from the proposed facility, Roswell would respond to calls. Fulton County would also work with Grovont to install the sewage system, and Deputy Director of Transportation Rob Dell-Ross said the Georgia Department of Transportation is currently discussing a hotspot analysis with Grovont to relieve some of the traffic on Etris and Cagle roads. Mayor Lori Henry said she was in favor of tightening Grovont’s rezoning request but encouraged the council to be sensitive to the fact that some senior citizens develop different needs as they age. “Having had two parents in a facility, I can tell you that fortunately or unfortunately, they were at different stages,” Henry said. “Only one year apart in age, but one needed a lot more services than the other one did. … That’s one of the worst things. My parents had been married for over 50 years and the most important thing to them was to be together.” Two motions failed for lack of a second and a third motion – to defer the vote until the Nov. 29 City Council meeting – passed 4 to 1, with Councilman Marcelo Zapata voting against. Councilman Matt Judy was absent. Earlier in the presentation, Gregory proposed starting construction in the early third quarter of 2022 and having the project completed in 2024.

CITY OF MILTON/PROVIDED

Members and friends of the Wolff family, as well as Mayor Joe Lockwood, City Council members and city staff visit the Lackey Road greenspace to celebrate its opening to the public on Nov. 1.

Wolff family charges City of Milton with preserving history of property By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga — Kirsten Muzinich thanked the Milton City Council Nov. 1 for the wisdom, vision and stewardship they had in creating the Lackey Road greenspace. “That is going to be the most amazing property and it’s going to be a legacy that Milton leaves for future generations,” Muzinich said. “… I can’t wait to go see it and visit it with my family.” Years ago, Bernard Wolff approached the city hoping to preserve his family’s property, protect it from development and make it publicly accessible. Then in December 2018, the city purchased the site with funds from a voter-approved $25 million greenspace bond. The property was opened to the public for the first time on Nov. 1. The greenspace bond allows the city to acquire land for parks, trails and greenspace. These areas are then set aside for passive use, meaning trails or walking areas are allowed on the property but no new buildings or active recreation programming. The Lackey Road greenspace is a 106acre natural preserve that sits in southwest Milton off a remote gravel road easily accessible from Arnold Mill Road. It features a 1.5-mile loop trail plus a roughly .3-mile trail that goes to Sweet Apple Road as well as a bubbling creek, flourishing flora and wildlife, and a picturesque lake. The Wolff family owned the property for over seven decades. During a ribbon-cutting ceremony, Wolff thanked the mayor and City Council for “saving” Lhakapani – a combination the family made up that translates in Urdu to abundance of water for the creeks, waterfalls and lake within it. “Just real proud to be a citizen of Milton,” Wolff said. “This used to be owned by a couple of moonshiners. My dad was a doctor down in Atlanta, and one of his

patients offered to sell him his farm.” As Wolff tells it, Bernard Wolff Sr. purchased 160 acres in 1947 from two feuding moonshiners. Over time, his family added more property until it reached 231 acres in the 1960s. His grandfather, Joseph E. Brown, was in charge of the U.S. Soil Conservation Service in North Georgia during the 1950s when he built the 3-acre lake on the property as well as other North Georgia farms. Soon afterward, the family built a cinderblock weekend house overlooking the lake where they spent most summers. Wolff said it was a character-building juxtaposition between affluent Buckhead versus life on a small farm with local farmers who were monetarily “poor” but rich in terms of homegrown food. However, the area transitioned from a “sleepy farm town with a proud history” to an “increasingly upscale village to support the new, vibrant citizenry,” starting in the 1980s and speeding up after the 1996 Summer Olympics. Although the family had sold off 40 acres to developers, most of Lahkapani remained. In 2004, Wolff said, the family sold another 79 acres on the western side of the property due to uncontrollable dumping of trash plus the occasional discovery of marijuana gardens hidden in the woods. The Wolff family later worked with the Georgia Forestry Commission to install at their expense a trail system for hiking, equestrian, bicycling and picnics. When Milton was incorporated in 2006, the family chose to join it after seeing the push for natural areas where people could walk free from the confines of suburbia. Wolff said his family considered making Lahkapani a park or conservation development, but those options would either not provide the retirement income they needed or included high-density development.

Southern Post will be a true mixed-use development on an intimate scale that brings together the synergies of the urban lifestyle and a close-knit community, LOUIS HADDAD, President and CEO of Armada Hoffler Properties 8 | Alpharetta-Roswell Herald | November 18, 2021

Construction set to pick up at Southern Post mixed-use project By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — After sitting idle for four years, Southern Post in historic downtown Roswell, formerly known as the Southern Skillet, celebrated the groundbreaking and demolition of the existing building in March 2020 before dozens of residents, developers, elected officials and community stakeholders. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, delaying construction for months on end. Now, Armada Hoffler Properties Director of Marketing Chelsea Forrest said the mixed-use project is gearing up to continue with construction within the next few weeks. Armada Hoffler Properties is a Virginia-based real estate investment trust with four decades of experience developing, building, acquiring, and managing office, retail and multifamily properties primarily in the MidAtlantic and Southeastern United States. In October 2020, Armada Hoffler Properties announced it had reached an agreement with commercial real estate development firm S.J. Collins Enterprises and purchased their interest to fully control the development of the Southern Post. The 260,000-square-foot mixed-use project consists of 128 luxury apartment units, nine townhomes, 95,00 square feet of creative loft office space, 40,000 square feet of retail space and 600 parking spaces with a parking deck. If all remains on schedule this time around, it is expected to open in summer 2023. Armada Hoffler Properties recently announced new tenants Belux Coffee and Azotea Cantina are joining DaVinci Donuts, Silla Del Torro and Ponko Chicken. Belux Coffee was founded in 2015 in Cumming and delivers premium specialty coffee beans and manual brewing equipment. It has a coffee shop in Alpharetta. Estimated development and construction costs for the project are expected to total approximately $110 million. Southern Post is one of Roswell’s most anticipated developments. After the city acquired the property in 2016, the Roswell Downtown Development Authority unanimously voted to select the Beecham Group to redevelop the property. However, those plans were nixed in 2018 when the authority decided their plans did not align with the city’s needs and priorities for the space. President and CEO of Armada Hoffler Properties

Louis Haddad said in an announcement Oct. 27 the company is excited to move forward with such a “transformative project” in Roswell. “Southern Post will be a true mixed-use development on an intimate scale that brings together the synergies of the urban lifestyle and a close-knit community,” Haddad said. Retail and office space are currently available for lease. The apartments are scheduled to begin preleasing in the first quarter of 2023. Wolff: Continued from Page 6 “Milton’s leaders wisely established a greenspace bond initiative to purchase undeveloped properties that otherwise would become subdivisions,” Wolff said. “This enabled Lahkapani to become the natural park with trails that the Wolff family and majority of Milton citizens desire.” At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Wolff recalled Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist Celestine Sibley who purchased an old school site on the property in the

Licenses: Continued from Page 1 ordinance antiquated and in conflict with the city charter. Will operates nine restaurants, three of them in Alpharetta. The charter lists only four qualifications for those seeking elected office in the city. It requires they must: Have established residence in the city for six months. Be 21 years of age. Maintain residence within the city dur-

early 1960s and reconstructed it into a cabin that still exists today. Wolff said it provided an unending source for Sibley’s daily columns and published books describing her “life in the country,” and her hopes for it to endure. “Celestine Sibley wrote this beautiful article about walking back home from going up and down Lackey Road,” Wolff said. “In her last paragraph, she was talking about listening to the woodlarks and then smelling all the beautiful flowers and she said, ‘Please God, can you make this last even one or two more years. Please just make it last.’ Y’all have done it. Thank you.” Councilman Paul Moore played a major role to ensure the property would not

require much maintenance and instead would be used to “go out, get on the trail and enjoy nature,” Wolff said. Moore said the greenspace will be a wonderful asset to the city. “[Mayor Joe Lockwood], I think you said it best,” Moore said. “It was not really about what was happening today but the tremendous legacy that will live on for the community for everybody to enjoy going forward. It was wonderful to be able to honor the Wolff family this morning and see the joy in their faces for something that has long been in the works.” The city plans to add more trails to the Lackey Road greenspace in the coming years. The property is located at 990 Lackey Road.

ing their term. Be qualified to vote in the city. Post 2 Councilman Ben Burnett cosponsored the latest effort to amend the ordinance. Burnett recused himself from the vote in June because, he said, he had announced he was not seeking re-election, and Will was running for his seat. The revised ordinance bans only specific city employees from acquiring a liquor license or having a financial interest in an establishment that has been issued a license. Those positions include: the city administrator, the assistant city administrator, any employee of the Public Safety or Community Development departments or

their spouse or minor children. Still unresolved is an issue raised by Councilwoman Karen Richard back in June. Richard, who did not attend the Nov. 15 meeting, said that under the city’s ethics code, an elected official who has an alcohol beverage license would have to abstain from voting on whether to issue liquor licenses to other operators in the city. Richard said that if four members of the City Council were licensed to sell alcohol, the seven-member body would never have enough eligible members to constitute a quorum, and no liquor licenses would be issued.

Vietnam veterans memorial wall dedicated in Johns Creek By SYDNEY DANGREMOND sydney@appenmedia.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Hundreds gathered at Newtown Park Nov. 13 for the grand opening of The Wall That Heals, a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. Saturday morning’s ceremonies, hosted by the Johns Creek Veterans Association and the City of Johns Creek, served to honor Vietnam War veterans and those who lost their lives in the war. After leading attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance, retired U.S. Army Sgt. Roger Wise spoke about the power of the memorial. “It’s a wall that heals or starts the healing process,” Wise said. “Every time I’m in Washington [D.C.], I go to the wall, and there’s always somebody kneeling down, talking to it, laughing, crying, healing.” Wise continued, sharing a story about his most recent visit to the wall in Johns Creek and how a young man whose father was killed in Vietnam before he was born finally felt as though he had met his father after seeing the memorial. “That’s the power of this wall,” Wise said. “That’s the power of this memorial walk.” Mayor Mike Bodker was the first to deliver official remarks, thanking veterans, the Veterans Association, the Recreation and Parks Department and all who contributed to bringing the wall to Johns Creek. “This is a project of honor, tribute and love which so many have worked on to bring to fruition,” Bodker said. “Today is the day that we celebrate and honor service and hear from the residents and veterans who helped consecrate these grounds and memorial.” Bodker then awarded President of the JCVA, Lt. Col. Mike Mizell with a proclamation from the Fulton County Commission, honoring the dedication of the memorial. Mizell shared a brief history of the memorial, recounting its three-day visit in Johns Creek in 2017, before being permanently installed last year. Mizell then recited the poem, “A Soldier’s Honor,” which details the sacrifice made by those who serve. Mizell also spoke of the debt owed to those who risk their lives in the military. “We can never be grateful enough for the sacrifices

that they’ve made, and we are humbled by their willingness to put their lives aside for the benefit of ours,” Mizell said. Finally, Mizell spoke directly to the veterans. “To my brothers and sisters, the Vietnam veterans, Vietnam-era veterans, to all veterans: welcome home. And welcome to your memorial park,” Mizell said. Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame inductee Capt. Tommy Clack, who was wounded May 29, 1969, along the Cambodian border, also delivered remarks. “I am blessed that but by the grace of God I know I would be listed on panel 23 west, line 13,” Clack said. He went on to speak about how Vietnam War veterans were treated after the war and how he and his fellow veterans had worked to ensure that mistreatment does not happen again. “You and I have ensured by what’s on that wall, that all generations after us are never treated that way,” Clack said. “When we look at that wall let it also remind us that if this country got enough money to fight a war, it had better find enough money to take care of the warrior and his friends and family.” Col. Rick White, who was deployed to Vietnam in 1967 at age 19, shared the personal numbers behind the statistics about the war. “During those Vietnam-era years, there were over nine million men and women serving in uniform worldwide,” White began. “On this wall there are a total of 58,317 names including eight women… They represent over 58,000 families and fellow warriors that grieve for them… the youngest here was 15… the oldest was 63.” On the memorial wall White said there are 40 sets of brothers and three sets of fathers and sons. There are 1,564 names of those lost from Georgia. “My friends and buddies that are here [on the wall] are numerous, and they include my medic who died in my arms,” White said. “There are many other young soldiers that were in my care and my responsibility that are on this wall. One of my best friends from Officer Candidate School and another, my OCS roommate are on this wall.” White said that more than 10% of his training school class’ names are on the wall because they deployed during the high casualties of the Tet Offensive. White then listed the names of 13 friends he lost in the war.

“These 13 names are but a tiny fraction of the huge number on this wall, but by saying their names out loud, this is my way of honoring them and serves as a representation for all those names that today will go unspoken,” White said. White shared the story of one of his lost friends and spoke of the sacrifice from each service man and woman. He then conveyed his thoughts about the power of the memorial wall. “This wall, this holy wall is truly the wall that heals,” White said. “It, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington… provide for me and I hope for all Vietnam vets and the loved ones of those that have fallen, an almost inspirational, soothing salve as we reverently approach its shining black surface and touch the names of those that have served and that we have loved.” White continued. “Each time I see this wall, I feel the presence of the men under my charge that I had lost in Vietnam, and I feel an almost quiet sense of calm and release,” White

MILTON, Ga. — Gaining acceptance into a Division 1 college for athletic achievements is no simple task for any high school student. But for twins and Cambridge High School seniors Charlie and Ella Ciardullo, years of hard work in academics and athletics has paid off. Cambridge High School held an early signing ceremony Nov. 10 in the gym. Students and family members were welcome to attend and support the 15 students recognized for their successes in athletics. The two siblings enjoyed the unique honor of being one of the school’s few sets of twins to celebrate the transition to Division 1 schools for athletics. “The proms, school dances, Christmas mornings, holidays, beach trips that were all missed due to trainings, athletic tournaments, the injuries, and the trips to the emergency room…to see all of that come together, it’s a very emotional day for me,” said Joe Ciardullo, Charlie and Ella’s father. “The schools they chose support them academically first. If your grades aren’t up, you’re just not going to be on the field. That’s super important…I hope they find on the field the success that they’ve trained so hard for.” The twins were called up separately to celebrate their big moment, with Charlie signing on to the University of Denver where he plans to study pre-med or engineering while playing lacrosse. Ella signed with Virginia Tech for soccer and plans to pursue study in marketing and/or journalism. “We’re so proud of them and to have a set of twins both achieving at a high level is a unique situation,” said Cambridge High School Athletic Director Lesley Broadwell. “I know they’ve worked hard, and their families have sacrificed a lot to get them to this point. We want them to be successful and enjoy college and get the most out of it, and that it’s everything for them athletically,

academically and socially just like we want for all of our kids…we want them to have an outstanding four years.” Family members and coaches took commemorative photos with each student as they were called up to the front to sign with their respective colleges. Once the ceremony ended, all the students came up front for a group photo before the school day began. The Ciardullo twins have accomplished a lot during their time on the field. While Charlie was recognized for his performance in lacrosse, Ella had the honor of playing on a club soccer team that qualified for Nationals and ranked first in the country. She was also nominated for a Gatorade Player of the Year Award. As they transition into new schools, Ella will be striving for a high GPA to keep in line with Virginia Tech’s 3.7 team average. Charlie hopes to be an All-American athlete for the University of Denver. “I had a couple of great coaches…that have really been able to help me progress,” Charlie said. “You’ve got to have big goals and if you work hard towards them, I believe you can have them.”

Out of seven sons and one daughter, only two were able and/or willing to serve in the military. His third son volunteered to serve in the armored division in the Vietnam War, while his sixth son volunteered and went on to serve a full-length tour in the U.S. Army Occupation of Europe. Despite his years of service, Dailey said the term “veteran” is fairly new. “The word ‘veteran,’ which is now applied to Nov. 11, wasn’t a commonly used name when I was young, but it is a common term today because we’ve been in two world wars and we have a lot of veterans,” Dailey said. “A lot of them have been lost and we certainly

regret that.” In 2018, about 7% of U.S. adults were veterans, down from 18% in 1980, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The drop coincides with decreases in active-duty personnel. Over the past half-century, according to the Pew Research Center, the number of people on active duty has dropped significantly, from 3.5 million in 1968, during the military draft era, to about 1.4 million, or less than 1% of all U.S. adults, in today’s all-volunteer force. The draft ended in 1973. Gulf War-era veterans now account for the largest share of all U.S. veterans, having surpassed Vietnam-era veterans in 2016, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs’ 2018 population model estimates. There are around 240,000 World War II veterans alive today. When asked why he continues to

share about his military experience at his age, Dailey paused for a moment and said, “I love people, and I believe there is a genuine gap of knowledge about the United States in World War II.” Marketing Director Dawna Williamson said Mansions at Alpharetta Senior Independent Living takes great pride in all of its veterans, evidenced by the veterans walls they have at their various facilities. “What we’ve noticed with some of the new residents is that many of them don’t even have service pictures anymore,” Williamson said. “So, to actually have pictures from when they served, it’s just so interesting that some families really keep that history alive, and you heard with Frank, about even the rarity in a family of eight to only have one to serve, it’s quite an accomplishment.”

And someday, we will all rendezvous on that final heavenly objective.” The ceremony’s special guest speaker was Jim Knotts, CEO of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. Knotts is an Air Force veteran of the Persian Gulf War. Knotts’ recounted the stories of several men and women listed on the memorial wall, introducing them to the guests. “These are all people who now, are a permanent part of your community,” Knotts said. To conclude the dedication ceremony, veterans built the soldier’s cross, and a Marine Corp Honor Guard performed a 21-gun salute. The Honor Guard’s bugler also performed “Taps.” Finally, Mizell and Bodker shared the ceremonial scissors and officially cut the ribbon on the memorial. Her compassionate and caring nature were attributes in her chosen profession as a critical care nurse, and in her most important role as mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother and aunt. She embodied the Will Rogers’ quote “A stranger is just a friend I haven’t met yet” and encouraged others to adopt that mindset. A woman of strong and unwavering faith she was able to see the good in all of God’s children. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church. Patricia Lynne Kendall

Patricia Kendall, 81, passed away peacefully, in her sleep, on the evening of Oct. 18, 2021, at her home in Matthews, N.C. “Pat” is survived by her brother Richard Moser and wife, Sharon, of St. Simons Island, Ga.; son Scott Kendall and wife, Karen, of Marietta, Ga.; son Michael Kendall and wife, Ann, of Charlotte; and son Richard Kendall and wife, Kimberly, of Seattle. Pat was deeply loved by all who knew her, including her seven grandchildren — Will, Erin, Bradley, Ryan, Kristin, Emily and Drew — and her newly born greatgrandson, Parker. Pat is preceded in death by her husband, Tom, and her parents, Herb and Molly Moser, of Sarasota, Fla. Originally from Rockville Centre, N.Y., Pat had spent the past 60+ years in the South, having graduated from Duke University in 1961, and living throughout the region, including for many years in Wilmington, N.C., where she raised her family near the Atlantic Coast. Pat was dedicated to her church, Northminster Presbyterian Church, keeping up with her grandchildren, following national politics and getting new recipe ideas from television

baking shows. She was an insatiable reader. Pat had a remarkable giraffe-statue collection and loved a good, authentic Reuben sandwich. She often could be seen attending Harry Connick Jr. concerts — right in the front row — at venues all around the country. Pat was his biggest fan. Pat lived for more than 20 years in Roswell, Ga., with her husband Tom. They married in 1961, before starting a family in Nashville, Tenn. Pat was a licensed Realtor and was part of the first graduating MBA cohort at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where she finished near the top of her class. Her business skills were instrumental in the success of two pet-store franchises she and Tom ran before retirement. The Kendall family is grateful to the staff and management at Matthews Glen in Matthews that cared for her over the past six years. A private family celebration of life is being planned for early next year for both Pat and Tom. The family is in the care of Heritage Funeral Home-Weddington Chapel. Online condolences may be made at www.heritagecares.com.
