Austin Elementary moves to new location By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — Students at Austin Elementary began the new year with a new building, moving into their Roberts Drive location Jan. 6. “Although we have waited a long time, the fruits of our labor have finally paid off,” Principal Ann Cullbreath said in a letter to parents. “Our new facility is amazing!” Cullbreath thanked the Austin Eagle Foundation and Parent Teacher Organization for working to make the transition seamless. “Our ‘Momma Movers,’ room parents and classroom volunteers worked tirelessly and we could not have accomplished our move without them,” she said. al procedures can be found at austines. dekalb.k12.ga.us. Although the new facility for Austin Elementary School has the capacity for 450 students more than the old location, Dunwoody’s public school overcrowding problems are far from solved. The DeKalb County School District is in the process of redistricting its elementary schools. After three public input meetings, the staff has presented its recommendation, a plan that attempts to distribute overcrowding across schools more evenly and moves about 100 students from Hightower Elementary to outside the Dunwoody cluster. A first read of the superintendent’s redistricting plan was on the agenda for the School Board’s Jan. 13 meeting. A final plan is expected to be adopted in February. It is set to go into effect August 2020.

Dunwoody to host public input meeting for Ashford Dunwoody commuter trail DUNWOODY, Ga. — The city of Dunwoody will hold a public information open house for Phase 2 of the Ashford Dunwoody Commuter Trail from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 23 at Dunwoody City Hall. This is a joint project with the city and the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts (PCIDs) and is an extension of Phase 1 of the trail. “All are invited to this open house,” Dunwoody Public Works Director Michael Smith said. “We want to give people a chance to view preliminary plans, ask questions and share feedback. The project will extend approximately 1.2 miles along Ashford Dunwoody Road from Perimeter Center West to Mt. Vernon Road and is proposed to include a cycle track and wider sidewalks. Phase 1 is scheduled to break ground in 2020

and run from Hammond Drive to Perimeter Center West. The city of Dunwoody will share the cost with the PCIDs. The total construction budget for Phase 1 is $1 million. City funding for both phases will come from the city’s hotel-motel tax. “The trail is part of a planned network of pathways that will provide bicycle and pedestrian access for residences, offices, and retail centers along this densely-populated corridor,” PCIDs Executive Director Ann Hanlon said. “We look forward to breaking ground this year on Phase 1 in front of Perimeter Mall.” The open house will be informal, and the public is invited to attend anytime between 5 and 7 p.m. There will be no formal presentation. The INK PENN

Okay is not okay Seriously? Yes, seriously. Imagine my surprise when I read that the hand gesture for okay is NOT okay. No, I haven’t lost my mind. The PC powers that be have determined that forming an O KATHY with your thumb and MANOS PENN index finger is somehow associated with white nationalist groups. I know this how? Because the Wall Street Journal headline “Generation Gap: Woke vs. Joke” caught my eye.

OPINION

Granted no one would mistake me for someone who is woke, but still, the idea that the okay hand gesture is offensive was a shocker. At the 2019 Army-Navy game, some students flashed the hand signal, and both military academies subsequently investigated the intent of the students. Why? Because the gesture resembled one that the Antif-Defamation League has added to their database of hate symbols. Thankfully, it was determined there was no racist intent on the part of the students. And so I wonder, is uttering the word “okay” okay? Who knows? And I also wonder what other previously innocent hand gestures will be deemed politically incorrect next. Imagine that the thumbs-up sign is adopted by a radical group as their symbol of choice, even briefly. Will Facebook and Apple immediately remove them

from their library of fun social media emojis? What about the sign of the horns, made by extending your pinky and index fingers? Couldn’t it be seen as a Satanic symbol? Would the University of Texas have to do away with their chant of “Hook ‘em Horns?” Heaven forbid. Then there’s the Vulcan salute popularized by Mr. Spock on “Star Trek.” Will “Live long and prosper” suddenly become taboo? What if I don’t want to live long and prosper? How dare you encourage me to do something I don’t want to do? Think of all the things we do with our hands to send a message. And, no I am not referring to that universal onefingered gesture we all know. Think of crossing your fingers for luck or high fiving someone as a way to say “way to go” or congratulations. Recall the fist bump, even used by President Obama and the First Lady. I mean it’s a fist. Couldn’t that be construed as somehow aggressive? If you’re my age, you may recall the “V” sign as a sign of peace. My husband, who is slightly older than I am, reminded me it was used as V for victory earlier. But, neither of us knew that the V sign can be seen as an insult depending on which way your palm faces. Really. If your palm faces inward,

the symbol is an insult, similar to the universal gesture referenced earlier. Who knew? How long before I’m accosted for innocently tapping on my steering wheel or snapping my fingers as I sing along to the radio in my car. Of course, anyone who heard me trying to sing would consider it a crime, but that’s a different story. Without a guide book, how is one to know what hand gestures are acceptable vs. taboo? The more I read about hand gestures, the more I think I should just sit on my hands, lest I offend someone. Right. No more singing in the car. No more waving at friends. In the not-so-distant future, will facial expressions be similarly scrutinized? Will it be deemed politically incorrect to smile, frown, stick out your tongue, or roll your eyes? Woke vs. joke — you decide.

Idalakers, another country home of the 1930s William Akers and Ida King Akers built a country home along Spalding Drive in what was considered Dunwoody around 1935. The name Idalakers evolved from Ida Akers name and from VALERIE the idea of many BIGGERSTAFF “idle acres surrounding the home. The property included 45 acres on a hill with lovely views of hills and valleys all around. William Akers was born in Atlanta in 1890. He attended Boys High School and North Georgia College. After some time in the lumber business, he was a manager and vice president for King Hardware. Later, he went into investment banking with Hamilton & Company and Citizens & Southern Company of Savannah. In 1933, he became administrative financial adviser and vice president of Haverty of Atlanta. Ida King Akers was also from Atlanta and attended Agnes Scott College. Her

father was George King, president of King Hardware. Ida and William married in 1911 in Fulton County. In 1930, the couple lived in the Ansley Park area with their two children, William Jr. and daughter, also named Ida. Like several others from Atlanta, they built a summer cottage in what was then considered Dunwoody, along Spalding Drive. The March 22, 1936 edition of The Atlanta Constitution describes an open house to be held at Idalakers. Their daughter attended boarding school at Gunstan Hall in Washington, D.C. and was visiting for her spring holidays. Typical of other nearby summer homes, the home had several amenities in order to be the perfect location for parties. There was a wrap-around porch with swings, hammocks and a ping pong table. There was also a tennis court, croquet lawn, and horseshoe rings. Family and friends could swim in the lake on the property, complete with a diving board. The kitchen and dining room for the home were connected to the main house by a 50-foot hallway.

(Atlanta Constitution, Sally Forth, May 1936). One of the features of the property was the lovely gardens, including iris of several different colors. Ida Akers was a member of the Iris Garden Club, named for her favorite flower. In 1942, she was asked by a friend who lived far away to visit a patient at Lawson General Hospital (World War II hospital in Chamblee). Ida Akers gathered 100 gardenia blossoms from Idalakers and delivered them to the hospital for all the patients to enjoy. (Atlanta Constitution, July 1, 1942) Katherine Geffcken, whose family owned the home known as Kenstone during these same years, recalls the Akers and Clay families as neighbors. The Geffcken home began as a summer place, but the family made it their permanent home in 1946. Kenstone still stands on Kenstone Court off Spalding Drive. One day, Katherine Geffcken and her mother walked north along the Hightower (Native American) Trail that adjoined their property, then turned right and approached the entrance of the

Akers country home. Katherine Geffcken remembers the Akers property as lush, with gorgeous azaleas, trees and a home that looked like a hunting lodge. In case you are wondering exactly where the home was located or if it still stands, those are questions I am still trying to determine myself. Please email me at pasttensega@gmail.com if you have information that would help Solution answer those questions. C O M A

Big Frog Custom T-Shirts leaps into Dunwoody DUNWOODY, Ga. — Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More, a garment decorating store opened a new location at 1402 B Dunwoody Village Parkway on Jan. 8. Big Frog of Dunwoody is owned and operated by local resident Tracey Carothers. After 20 years in the tech industry as an executive, Carothers decided it to make a drastic career change through joining Big Frog. “I am beyond excited for this new venture to bring Big Frog to our community,” Carothers said. “Big Frog’s team has been immensely supportive and invested, yet appropriately hands-off, a great balance for someone like me making a career change.” Carothers plans to use her location to promote sustainability by using green technology. The new business venture also brings Carothers, a cancer survivor who is navigating life with a chronic illness, the ability be a more active member of the Dunwoody community at her own pace. “My experiences with my health taught me to live in the moment and keep moving forward despite challenges faced,” she said. “This new venture will allow me the chance to do ‘happy work’ by providing my community with the ability to create their own, unique apparel.” Big Frog combines creativity with cutting-edge technology. The brand’s direct to garment printing bonds the dye to the fabric’s molecules allowing products to be washed in both hot and cold water and with color-safe bleaching without risking damage, crack or peeling to the image. “Tracey is a perfect fit for our Big Frog family, and we are looking forward to having her on board during such a pivotal time in our growth as we enter the new decade,” company President Tina Bacon-DeFrece said. Since opening its first franchised location in 2009, Big Frog has grown exponentially as it opened its 100th location in December 2019. Big Frog of Dunwoody is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information call 770-624-2600 or visit bigfrog. com\dunwoody.

attend the school. Parent volunteers, PTO and community business sponsors worked to raise the funds needed to create a contemporary environment for safe play and daily use. It was through their donations to the Kingsley Derby fundraiser and Kingsley Annual Fund that the long-term goal was finally reached. “The playground was outdated and very old,” PTO co-President Tova Norman said. “There were some things that only older kids could use and younger kids could use…we wanted something that all of the kids could use.” Norman said the PTO is happy with the way the grounds turned out – a testament to the hard work of volunteers who came together for one ideal. Although Kingsley remains Dunwoody’s smallest elementary school, there is a sizable number of special needs students in attendance. With equipment over 20 years old, it was time to create a playful habitat for

a new generation, parents said. In order to create an environment assessable to each child, certain features were added to accommodate the many different types of students. “They poured rubber surfacing allows a smoother surface for students who use wheelchairs or who have gross motor coordination difficulty,” said Vanessa Pye, a parent volunteer and Derby Committee member. “We wanted to include items that fit with our recent STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) certification; this was accomplished with ground level activities like the piano and drum panels and various climbing obstacles.” Students cheered and ran toward their new play hub while parents and teachers discussed their satisfaction with the much-needed addition. Bearing a modern and sleek appearance, the playground encapsulates the interests of each age group. “The playground is a major visual representation of the years of hard work through fundraising and volunteer efforts,” Pye said. “Our hope is that the new playground will instill a sense of pride and school spirit in the students and parents of Kingsley Elementary.”

OPINION

The Investment Coach

Remembering Paul Volcker Those born between 1970 and 1979 range in age from 41 to 50, a time when one is making critical decisions about security, family, career, funding for Lewis J. Walker, CFP multiple demands, while thinking about concepts of financial independence and ultimate “retirement,” whatever that is. Approaching the milestone age of 50, for some reason you get more serious abut planning for major life transitions. However, investors, planners and advisers of all ages need to recall the tumultuous 1970s and early 1980s and the role Paul Volker played in restoring sanity and stability to a ruinous economy. There are lessons germane to your future. Paul Volcker, who died Dec. 8, 2019, at age 92, became chairman of

the Federal Reserve Bank at the behest of President Jimmy Carter in 1979. In a retrospective of Volcker’s long and storied career, the Wall Street Journal, 12/10/2019, pegged him as the man who “tamed inflation in the 1980s,” a crisis with roots in the early 1970s. Do you remember President Gerald Ford’s 1974 WIN buttons — Whip Inflation Now? It was an attempt to combat rising inflation by encouraging personal disciplined savings habits. Causes for rising prices were the subject of much debate. Nobel Prizewinning economist Milton Friedman (1912-2006) in his 1970 seminal work, “The Counter-Revolution in Monetary Theory,” wrote, “Inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon in the sense that it is and can be produced by a more rapid increase in the quantity of money versus output.” In other words, too much money chasing too few goods. When Richard Nixon took office in

1969, America was in recession, an economic retrenchment blamed on profligate deficit spending on the Vietnam War and Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society social welfare spending, a policy Nixon continued while agreeing to a major expansion in Social Security benefits. The Federal Reserve instituted easy money policies to spur full employment. Some of the blame for rising prices was attributed to a series of Arab oil embargoes in the late 1960s and early 1970s as energy costs skyrocketed and gas lines proliferated. Much of the anger over ever rising prices was focused on greedy Arabs and American business leaders, even union bosses for pushing for wage increases, but not the real culprit, easy money stimulation. In March and April, 1980, 12-month annual inflation peaked at 14.7 percent. To tame runaway inflation that was “feeding upon itself,” the Fed under Volker constricted the nation’s money supply. The prime rate, the most widely used benchmark in setting mortgage and home equity lines of credit and credit card rates, soared to a record 21.5 percent, Dec. 19, 1980. (By way of comparison, the current prime rate is 4.25%). Rates for conventional 30-year mortgages rose to a record 18.45 percent in 1980 with 3-month CD rates peaking at 18.65 percent. Hailed as one of the most capable and courageous Fed chairmen in history, in the early 1980s Volcker was distinctly unpopular and faced myriad protests, especially from hard-pressed farmers and construction workers. In the long run, despite the pain, he was proven right. The inflationary 1970s was unkind to equity investors in general. In January, 1970, the S&P 500 index stood at 578.48. By January, 1980, it had sunk to 377.41 in the wake of the Fed-induced credit crunch midst corporate and business failures. By July, 1982, the index stood at 282.50 and BusinessWeek magazine with an Aug. 13, 1979, cover famously headlined “The Death of Equities:

How Inflation Is Destroying the Stock Market.” By the summer of 1982 inflation had dropped to roughly 3 percent. Paul Volcker had won his war. Buying opportunities are hard to see midst carnage, but Mister Market wasn’t dead, and rising from a coffin, commenced a long bull run, hitting 2130.90 in May, 2000, just before the tech stock rout. Investors faced recession with the collapse of tech stocks and a stock downturn from 2000 into early 2003, and another crunch 2007-2008, highlighted by the sudden collapse of Lehman Brothers, September, 2008. In September, 2008, the S&P 500 stood at 1371.64. On Friday the 13th, December, 2019, the S&P 500 closed at another record high of 3168.80. Year-over-year All Items inflation stood at 2.1 percent. A 30-year fixed mortgage, 3.85 percent. The Fed in mid-December signaled a longer pause on potentially raising interest rates. We are in a Goldilocks economy, not too hot, not too cold. But we know creative destruction still reigns; the disruptors will continue to create winners and losers. Bull market runs tend to be longer than bear market interludes, yet two or three years of market pain can rattle your psyche. With markets at all-time highs, it’s a good time to sit down with your adviser and match risk and reward with time frames and capital needs. Nothing lasts forever, not the good, not the bad. Dunwoody Nature Center dedicates new classroom Dunwoody, GA — The Dunwoody Nature Center officially dedicated a new classroom in honor of the Dennis and Marie Crean family, long-time supporters of the center. The Crean Eco-Classroom was constructed from two used shipping containers, and the design of the new building complements the cedar-planked design of the Center’s North Woods Pavilion. Later this spring, it will feature a green roof with live plants, serving as an environmental and sustainability teaching tool. “It’s up-cycling at its best,” Executive Director Michael Cowan said. “It’s also a perfect use for the containers because the reinforced-steel frames will support the weight of the garden of native pollinator plants that will grow on the roof of the classroom.” Nearly 70 guests attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony Jan. 5, conducted by the Crean family, city officials and nature center staff. The building was built in partnership with the city will be used for camps and programming, school field trips, scout programs and other community events.

Healthful school lunches: What parents need to know NAPS — The healthfulness of school lunches is one of the top three parental concerns of this school season, according to a recent survey conducted by OnePoll. The survey covered a number of parental worries for their school-aged kids, including their safety, whether they’ll make new friends, quality of education, and homework load. However, 44 percent of respondents prioritized healthful school lunches after the quality of their children’s teachers, and ahead of the cost of school supplies. Taking a deeper look into school lunches, the survey also found that the average child buys lunch about three times a week and, while healthful eating is a top concern for parents, 36 percent admitted they don’t typically know what their child eats at school. Making good nutrition a part of kids’ everyday life What with pizza, mystery meat, and the variety of fried options offered at school, most parents say their child eats healthiest when at home or when they pack their kids’ lunches themselves. Unfortunately, the survey also found that 45 percent of parents admit that they don’t always have time or have forgotten to prepare a sack lunch for their kids to take to school. “Parents have enough to worry about and what their kids are eating in school should be the last thing they

have to think about. Yet, unfortunately, parents have deep fears about what their kids are eating in lunchrooms across the country,” says Dr. John Agwunobi, pediatrician, co-president and Chief Health and Nutrition Officer at Herbalife Nutrition. “We all have a responsibility to ensure our kids are getting the most nutritious meals possible, and I applaud school districts around the country that are working with parents to improve both the nutrition levels and taste of school meals.” According to the survey, only about a quarter of parents know both the nutrient and calorie value of the foods their children eat for lunch, whether homemade or purchased. The importance of knowing nutritional value of food Building a balanced meal—including dairy, vegetables, fruits, grains and protein—doesn’t have to be complicated or take a long time. What is most impor tant is making sure that the calories your children consume are jam-packed with the nutrients they need for energy and growth—a concept known as “nutrient density.” Emphasizing nutrient-dense foods is a great way to rethink how you pack your kids’ lunches—and how you plan meals at home, too. Simply put, nutrient-dense foods are those that pack a lot of nutrients relative to their calorie cost.

When choosing between two food items with the same calorie amount, one food choice could provide your body with the protein, fiber, healthy fats, vitamins or minerals it needs every day, while another choice may provide empty calories from sugar and saturated fat with no other significant nutrients. Ideally, a meal should be made up of mostly nutrient-dense foods, with fewer “calorie-dense” foods—such as fats and sugars—which are high in calories relative to the nutrients they contain. When parents do pack a lunch, the survey reported, tasty food is their top priority (64 percent), as well as foods that parents know their child will eat (64 percent), followed by healthy options (62 percent). Some ideas for nutrient-packed, healthful foods that most kids will enjoy include omega-3-rich tuna fish, sweet and crunchy carrots, strawberries packed with potassium and vitamin C, and nuts, which can replace chips to satisfy cravings for salty, crunchy items. However, the survey also found that the peanut butter and jelly sandwich continues to be the staple menu item most parents pack for their children. To make it more nutri ent dense, parents can simply replace the white bread with whole grain bread and use a low- or no-sugaradded peanut butter and jelly, to make the sandwich more healthful, with better nutritional value.

No place like High Meadows School There is no place like High Meadows School. Since 1973, High Meadows students in Pre-K through 8th grade have learned through experiential, immersive educational opportunities offered both in the school’s spacious, light-filled classrooms and across 42 acres of grassy fields and scenic woodlands. High Meadows School’s progressive curriculum is focused on developing future global citizens and innovative leaders who embrace challenge and think for themselves. High Meadows lower years classrooms offer low student-teacher ratios in which instruction emphasizes academic excellence, love of learning, critical thinking, and environmental and social responsibility. As a nationally recognized and award-winning leader in progressive education, High Meadows is an accredited International Baccalaureate (IB) World School offering its renowned Primary Years Program for students in preschool through fifth grade. High Meadows School’s accomplished and experienced faculty lead each student on this journey. Through interactive, inquiry-based instruction, supported by of-the-moment technology and our nature-based campus, High Meadows teachers are unequaled in their intellect, passion, and compassion for these kids. Every day they inspire authentic learning opportunities that are engaging and sticky (literally and figuratively!). When children graduate from High Meadows, they are empowered with a deep respect for international perspectives, an intuitive understanding of life’s interconnectedness, and an exceedingly strong sense of self. Education is an expedition that starts from the moment we are born. When we teach children to be

curious and inquiring at an early age, we create within them a love of learning that lasts an entire lifetime. What is more important than that? Come see how all this comes to life with a tour of our campus. We invite you to talk with us about how your child may find his or her sense of place with us,

and speak with current and alumni parents to learn about their own experiences firsthand. Open House, January 26th from 2 - 4 p.m. highmeadows.org 770-993-2940

MJCCA Preschools MJCCA Preschools are not only a place where children come to learn and grow, but where families find a community that can last a lifetime. We are where children discover their confidence, meet their newest lifelong friends, and develop a love learning. The Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta has been providing outstanding early childhood education to discerning Atlanta families for more than 60 years. The Weinstein School in Dunwoody and The MJCCA Schiff School at Temple Emanu-El in Sandy Springs both offer full- and half-day options for children ages 6 weeks to Pre-K, and The Weinstein School also has an outstanding Transitional Kindergarten program. MJCCA preschoolers experience our innovative and progressive curriculum, infused with traditional Jewish learning all in a safe and loving environment. Our exceptional teachers focus on four traditional areas of child development: social and emotional growth, literacy, cognition, and movement/physical development. Exceptional enrichment and extracurricular classes allow children to explore their interests and try new things. The Weinstein School is a NAEYC-accredited program (National Association for the Education of Young Children) — a distinction awarded to only the top 7% of preschools nationwide and is SACS Accredited. St. Pius X basketball splits matchups with Marist By Luke Winstel For the Crier The St. Pius X girls basketball team dropped a Saturday road battle to Marist, 37- 33. This years’ matchup was the fourth consecutive where neither team passed the 45-point mark. St. Pius did not stray from their normal game plan, continuing to pound the ball in the lane while trying to get to the charity stripe. The Golden Lions were 5-5 from the line but failed to finish attempts inside, shooting an uncharacteristically low 6-24 in the paint. After the game, St. Pius head coach Kyle Snipes said he was disappointed

the team didn’t do a better job of attacking and finishing. “A bright spot is that even though we fell behind by nine midway through the fourth quarter, we were able to get it back within one-possession twice in the final minute,” Snipes said. The coach was also impressed by the play of Georgie Dooley, who posted 14 points, shooting 6-9 from the field. She put the team on her back and was the only player to score in the fourth quarter for St. Pius, Snipes said. “Georgie is a great asset to have because she’s a stretch four that can knock down the three with a great deal of consistency,” the coach said. “She also hit two huge free throws with five seconds to

go in our region win Friday night.” The team’s record moves to 14-3. The Golden Lions take on both Madison County and Pace Academy this week. Following the girls’ game, the St. Pius boys defeated Marist 46-37. The team rebounded well after a region loss at the buzzer to North Oconee the night before. Marist entered the game ranked No. 14 in the AAAA Classification with a 10-7 overall record. The team defended well in their lowest-scoring affair of the year. After the game, St. Pius head coach Aaron Parr said the team relied on its strength on defense. “We tell our guys that defense travels with you wherever you go,” he said. “I thought we put together a complete defensive effort.”

The Golden Lions have now won three of their four games in 2020. Parr said he was pleased with his team’s balanced attack against the War Eagles. Brookes Kahlert led the team with 12 points and four assists while going 5-5 on free throws. Trey Acklin and Jack Verrill each added 8 points. The team shot 14-18 from the free-throw line in the victory. “I thought our team showed grit on Saturday at Marist,” Parr said. “Our guys battled for 32 minutes. We came out as the aggressor and were extremely tough down the stretch.” The win boosts the team’s record to 13-5. The squad is currently ranked No. 7 in Class AAAA and No. 59 in Georgia, according to MaxPreps.com.
