Dick Williams: Dunwoody’s giant of journalism By CATHY COBBS newsroom@appenmedia.com DUNWOODY, Ga. –– Dick Williams personified Dunwoody. The 77-year-old television talk show host, editorial writer and former owner and publisher of the Dunwoody Crier, died of congestive heart failure Jan. 20 at his daughter’s home in Arkansas. Williams wore many hats, including a 30-year stint as a high school basketball referee, a newspaper columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a Georgetown University recruiter and a behindthe-scenes advocate for the formation of the cities of Brookhaven and Dunwoody. However, his primary focus and passion revolved around building community through the Dunwoody Crier. In an April 10, 2019 column, when it appeared that the Crier would cease publication, Williams wrote of three dreams he’d had as a young man – “play basketball in Madison Square Garden, be a big-city newspaper columnist and publish a small-town newspaper that served the community.” “I did all three,” Williams wrote. “Not bad.” Williams’ dream followed a winding path from Kansas City to New York City, with stops in between before he landed in Atlanta. He worked as a news director at WXIA, which he found was not his cup of tea, then made the jump to the afternoon paper, the Atlanta Journal, as a reporter, then an editor, and later as a columnist. In the early 1980s, he began hosting a television show that morphed into “The

Georgia Gang,” a weekly political roundtable. His stint as host ran more than 35 years until health challenges forced him to give up his seat in 2019. His dream to own a local newspaper came to fruition in 1996 with purchase of the Crier from former publisher Susan Courtemanche, who had been operating it as a local shopper filled with a smattering of ads, folksy news and engagements and wedding announcements. Williams took the paper to another level, hiring reporters tasked with finding stories that showcased Dunwoody

and its unique mix of news about Perimeter area businesses, local politics, longtime residents and young families looking for a “Mayberry-type” community to raise their families. The paper hit its stride with its 1998 coverage of the Dunwoody tornado and the rebuilding effort that took place afterwards. A series of stories written by the likes of Williams, Kathy Florence, Rashawn Biddle and Mickey Goodman earned a “Best Local Coverage Award” from Atlanta Magazine. Florence, now the city’s communica-

tions manager, who worked at the Crier for years as a columnist and graphics artist, said she hopes to emulate Williams’ fearless embrace of the values he held in high regard. “Dick was opinionated, but his principled approach to journalism never wavered,” Florence said. “I learned so much from him, and I consider myself one of the luckiest writers ever to have learned from the best. Monday afternoon deadline days at the Crier were some of the most stressful and exciting days of my life.” With Williams working his magic behind the scenes, the dream of cityhood for Dunwoody gained momentum in 2000. In his 2019 column in the Crier, Williams said “thousands of trees died for our coverage of Denis Shortal, Bev Wingate, Ken Wright and the leaders of the incorporation effort.” Voters approved the city’s formation in July 2008 by an overwhelming 82 percent.

Wellstar North Fulton’s first baby of 2022, dad share same birthday By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — For high school sweethearts Warren and Brittley Wills, New Year’s Day just became that much more special. The Atlanta couple welcomed their baby girl, Avery Jade Wills, at 11:52 a.m. Jan. 1, becoming Wellstar North Fulton Hospital’s first baby of the new year. The newborn weighed 5 pounds, 12 ounces and measured 20 inches long. A week before her birth, Warren, 33, jokingly asked their doctor to induce his wife on New Year’s Day, which also happens to be his birthday. He said the doctor looked him straight in the face and said, “Absolutely not.” However, just as they were sitting at home watching the college football playoffs, 32-year-old Brittley Will’s water broke, and the rest is history. “This is our first baby,” Warren said. “We are very excited for her, and it’s really cool that she was born on my birthday. It’s not a new thing for me to share my birthday though. My mom’s birthday is the day after mine, and I have a sister-in-law and uncle whose birthdays are on the same day, so she just joined the ranks in our family of yet another New Year’s baby. It is very special.” Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, Warren and Brittley Wills have known each other since they were 14 years old. Warren attended Georgia Tech, and Brittley went to Auburn University. They got married four years ago. Warren Wills said he is looking forward to making Avery Jade’s birthday as special as it was for him growing up.

DeKalb County names new elections director DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The DeKalb County Board of Registration and Elections announced it has selected Keisha Smith as its new executive director. Smith currently serves as the executive director of the Virginia Health Workforce Development Authority, a position she has held since 2015. She has served for nearly 20 years in leadership roles in the public and private sectors. “I’m excited to bring my leadership, vision and collaborative approach to guiding the work of DeKalb’s Voter Registration and Elections,” Smith said. “Collaboration, integrity and efficiency will anchor my efforts as the next executive director, and I look forward to working with the Board of Registration and Elections, our area and regional stakeholders, the Secretary of State, and the voters of DeKalb as we continue to ensure safe, secure and accurate elections.” Smith will assume her role on Feb. 14. She will take over for Twyla Hart,

who has served as interim executive director since October. One of Smith’s first priorities will be to facilitate a series of countywide listening sessions with voters and stakeholders to “gain insights needed to forge an equitable path forward,” according to a statement issued by DeKalb County. “As we approach what will likely be another historic year in elections in Georgia, it was critical for the board to identify key leadership roles and restructure the organization to meet the needs of the more than 550,000 DeKalb voters, adhere to new state voter laws and continue to ensure fair, accessible elections,” said Board Chair Dele Lowman Smith. Early voting for the 2022 general primary election in Georgia begins on May 2, with Election Day on May 24. The general election will be held on Nov. 8, with early voting beginning on Oct. 17.

MARTA CEO Jeffrey Parker dies Newspapers file legal action By JAKE DRUKMAN jake@appenmedia.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — MARTA General Manager and CEO Jeffrey Parker died by suicide Jan. 14. Parker was struck by a train at the East Lake Transit Station. MARTA’s official Twitter account tweeted at 11:45 p.m. Jan. 14 about an emergency situation at the station disrupting service. “Jeff cared deeply about MARTA and his leadership gave us a strong foundation from which to carry forward,” the agency said in a statement. Parker worked in transportation for more than 35 years and had served as MARTA’s CEO since 2018. He began his career as an intern with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority in 1985. He later served as commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Transportation. Atlanta Business Chronicle rec-

ognized Parker in 2020 as one of the most influential Atlantans. The Atlanta chapter of Women’s Transportation Seminar also recognized him in 2019 as its Man of the Year for his record of hiring and promoting women in transportation. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and other state officials have shared tributes to Parker on social media. “In addition to a remarkable professional career in the public/private sectors, Jeffrey was known for his civic engagement and support for the advancement of his communities,” Kemp said in a tweet. At a special called meeting Jan. 15, the MARTA Board of Directors named Collie Greenwood as interim general manager and CEO. Greenwood has 33 years’ experience in transit operations and joined MARTA as chief of bus operations and urban planning in July 2019. against Facebook, Google By JAKE DRUKMAN jake@appenmedia.com MARIETTA, Ga. — Some North Georgia newspaper companies have filed antitrust lawsuits against tech giants Google and Facebook, alleging that their “anticompetitive and monopolistic practices” have caused major harm to news outlets’ ability to survive. Marietta-based Times Journal filed suit on Nov. 12, citing statistics that newspaper advertising revenue has fallen by more than 50% since 2006, and nearly 20% of newspapers have closed over the past 15 years. Times Journal owns the Marietta Daily Journal, Cherokee Tribune & Ledger News and the Morgan County Citizen. The lawsuit alleges that news outlets’ loss of revenue across the country was “directly caused” by Google and Facebook’s practices and that the harm was intentional. The complaint opens with a quote from Thomas Jefferson: “Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesi-

tate a moment to prefer the latter.” The suit references “Jedi Blue,” the codename of a 2018 agreement between Google and Facebook that the two companies kept under wraps. The deal provided that Google would give Facebook preferential advertising rates. In 2020, several states’ attorneys general filed antitrust lawsuits against Google as a response to the deal. The lawsuit alleges both companies violated the Sherman Anti-trust Act, an 1890 federal law that outlawed monopolistic practices in an effort to promote free trade and competition. Nearly identical lawsuits were filed in the preceding days by Neighbor Newspapers and Rome News Media, though these companies fall under the Times Journal umbrella. Georgia’s newspapers are not alone in their campaign. The lawsuits were transferred in December to the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York to be consolidated with pending antitrust cases against Google and Facebook from at least 15 states and U.S. territories, including Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico.

Williams: Continued from Page 1 Danny Ross, who served as an atlarge council member from 2008-2011, said Williams’ political clout advanced the agenda in Dunwoody’s incorporation efforts. “He made a difference in political discourse,” Ross said. “He made a difference in the formation of two cities: Dunwoody and Brookhaven.” John Heneghan, the city’s longest serving council member, said Williams positively impacted the lives of every Dunwoody citizen. “He supported community events, influenced politics and helped found a city that improved the quality of life for all involved,” he said. Dunwoody’s first mayor, Ken Wright, said he met Williams when the thought of cityhood was in the idea stage, and that his friendship with the Crier editor pushed him to take leadership roles during incorporation and beyond. “We were some 25 years apart in age but that never really entered my mind,” Wright said. “Ultimately, I saw him as a good friend and a really … fun, funny, smart and cool dude. “During the 10 years pre-city and years after cityhood, Dick and his staff would plaster every word, thought and non-word in our beloved Dunwoody Crier,” Wright continued. “It was hyper-local news at its pinnacle. It was awesome and nightmarish at the same table, but always a gold medal (or at least a tasty treat) for the Dunwoody community.” Williams’ support for another Dunwoody institution, the annual Fourth of July Parade, was a constant during his tenure at the Crier. Under the Crier’s sponsorship and with the help of dedicated volunteers like residents Bill Robinson and Pam Tallmadge, it grew to be Georgia’s largest parade, with 2,000 participants and 30,000 spectators. In 2011, the parade committee honored him for his community efforts, naming him that year’s grand marshal. “The Dunwoody parade would not be what it is today without Dick Williams’ support,” Heneghan said. “The Dunwoody parade was his Christmas.” Like his steadfast support of local causes, Williams was equally passionate about voicing his conservative beliefs, which drew him a fair number of detractors. However, as most who met Williams agree, he met controversy in a different manner. “The whole idea was to disagree without being disagreeable,” Williams said in a television interview with Fox 5 News about his retirement from “The Georgia Gang” and his work at the Crier. “I try to bring all the sides of the issue to the table for discussion.”

FILE PHOTO

Community activist and Dunwoody Nature Center Controller Susan Mitchell, who knew Williams in different capacities for decades, said the veteran journalist’s greatest pride was the Dunwoody community he helped to form and was committed to support. “Dunwoody will forever be defined by its founding storyteller-in-chief, Dick Williams,” she said. “Dick long loved this community. While he rubbed elbows with influential politicos, he was equally attentive to the triumphs of the soap box derby kids and the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl champs from our area elementary schools. I’ll miss his salty wit, his keen intellect and his unapologetic (Georgetown) Hoya worship.” Appen Media Publisher Hans Appen, whose company took over the Crier days after Williams announced its closure in 2019, said today’s Crier “is a weekly reminder of Dick’s impact on journalism in Metro Atlanta and the city of Dunwoody.” “The archives of the Crier are filled with stories he wrote about the community he so loved,” Appen said. “We will be forever grateful to continue his legacy that is the Dunwoody Crier.” Williams was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Rebecca Chase Williams. Rebecca, a veteran ABC News reporter and former Brookhaven mayor, died after a three-year battle with cancer in March 2019. Dick Williams is survived by daughters, Chase Williams Stevens (Wesley) and Clare Williams Stevens (William), as well as his first grandchild, Grace. The lives of Dick and Rebecca Williams will be honored at a visitation from 4-7 p.m., Feb. 10 at HM Patterson & Son, Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta, Ga. 30319. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11 at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church in Sandy Springs.

A tale for the closely held business owner: a failure to harvest This column is aimed at business owners. Consider Joe Brown. He owns a closely held enterprise, a productive farm. It’s a sizeable and he LEWIS J. WALKER, CFP spread, employs wellpaid help. They till, plant, water, prune, weed, and fertilize. Throughout the hot summer they monitor the crop, keeping birds and pests at bay. But, wonder of all wonders, come fall Farmer Brown fails to harvest his crop! The planning, labor, nurturing...all wasted! There’s no financial return at seasons end on the time, talent and treasure expended. This isn’t a fairy tale. Failure to harvest happens every year. Roughly 70%-75% of all businesses put on the market annually do not sell. Ultimately there may be a harvest of sorts for some, but it falls well short of expectations and the financial needs of the owner and his or her family. The oldest baby boomers turn 76 in 2022. The youngest boomer will turn 58; a mid-point boomer, 67. Consider the vast number of boomer-owned firms. Eventually every business will transition. The transition may be planned. It may be unplanned, precipitated by one or more of the 5D’s — death, disability, divorce, disagreement, distress. A sole owner or key owner may retire, voluntarily or involuntarily. Some owners assert, “I will

never retire.” You WILL retire. You may go out the door on a gurney, but you will retire! The pandemic has spurred a jump in retirements as nose-to-the-grindstone owners and workers reassess meaning and purpose. We are about to witness a cascade of owners attempting to harvest the fruits of longtime labors. Citing a 2016 Exit Planning Institute survey of middle market business owners, 63% of private businesses are owned by boomers. The business often represents 80%-90% of their net worth. Outside of a residence, vacation home and 401(K), little may rest in investments external to the business. To what extent does your financial independence and that of your family post-transition depend on harvesting a given inflation-adjusted value from your business? That’s a critical question considering that 76% of owners plan to transition within 10 years, yet most have no solid plan. Consider how fast the last decade raced by. How much time do you really have to evaluate your business, determine the future value needed to secure your envisioned future, and take steps to grow a transferable, harvestable enterprise value that meets your goals? Many business owners want to transfer their business to a family member. Families are complicated! Is the family business part of a larger family enterprise? How do you deal with family members who will not join the business? How do you know if the designated family member really wants to enter the business, or is suited for

the envisioned role? Success beyond the second or third generation is rare. How will a family member as successor impact loyal and key non-family employees? Will they leave the business? Of owners who want to exercise an intergenerational transfer, fewer than 30% do so. Developing a short- and long-term business continuity and succession strategy simply is good business. The heart of a strategic continuity plan is a Value Acceleration Methodology. Step One is to Indentify Current Value. Evaluating a number of factors produces a “range of value” estimate. You may or may not need a formal valuation initially. The real value is what a fully informed buyer would pay for your business. Step Two is to Protect Value, a derisking strategy. What are the risks to value? What risks can be insured? What risks can be managed, minimized, or eliminated? Step Three is to Build Value. There’s a big difference in the value of a lifestyle business and a transferable enterprise. Owner dependence is a huge detriment to value, a hard reality for a typical “in charge” owner. Transferable human capital value is important. Yet, many entrepreneurs went into business because they were not administrative types. They did not set out to “manage people,” but as a business grows, team development and employee on-boarding, retention, and engagement becomes a key component of transferable value. Step Four is to Harvest Value. Do you know what all of your options are?

Most don’t. What are the pros and cons of an intergenerational transfer, management buyout, sale to existing partners, qualified Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), non-qualified employee stock ownership plan, sale to a third party, recapitalization, or orderly liquidation? Step Five, Manage Value. Many transition plans do not involve 100% cash up front. You may have an earn-out or other factors that impact payments over time relative to the sustainable value of the business after the initial transfer of full or partial ownership. What’s your post-sale value sustainability and growth plan? One year after a sale or transfer, over 70% of former owners have regrets. They’re bored! You can only travel so much, play so much golf. Your children and grandchildren love you but they’re busy. Your spouse may not be accustomed to you being home all the time! What’s your after-harvest plan to sustain purpose, meaning, passion, and engagement with life? What’s your plan to sustain physical as well as fiscal fitness? OPINION

Learning the business from the best teacher Everything I know about sales I learned from my dad. For my money, he’s the best salesperson I’ve ever met. Let me tell you why. When I first joined the family business over a decade ago, I HANS APPEN was put through a bit Publisher of an “Appen Media hans@appenmedia.com boot camp.” The goal was for me to learn as many areas of the business as quickly as I could. I spent time contributing to our circulation department, helping the newsroom get photos for stories and write briefs, and answering phones to help customers and readers. The bulk of my onboarding, however, was spent on the sales floor. Each day I learned how to interface with customers, consult with them on their advertising campaigns, the value (and cost) of a new customer, the art of the cold call and more. I would also go on sales calls with members of our team, including my dad. One day we went to visit a longtime client of his, a successful realtor in Forsyth County. I was there to observe and to absorb as much as I could. Toward the end of this meeting, the client looked over at me and told me

something I’ll never forget: “Hans, let me tell you about your dad. I have worked with him for 20 years. What you need to know about him is that we are not just business partners, but that he’s become one of my closest friends. I’m not just saying this because he’s here, but if your dad called me out of the blue and told me that he was stranded in the middle of nowhere and needed help, I would drop everything I was doing and go help him. That’s how much his friendship means to me.” I remember walking away from the meeting a bit speechless. Growing up I’d never really known my dad in a professional setting. I understood the family business and what my parents did for a living, but I’d never interacted with it. I didn’t have an appreciation for why they were good at their jobs and how they’d been so successful all these years. But now I did. I had seen a side of my dad – the publisher, the salesperson, the friend – that I was discovering for the first time as I began my career in the business he built. “People want to do business with people who honor their time, mean what they say, and do what they say they’re going to do,” my dad would tell me. He didn’t make sales calls; he built relationships. He cared. It’s what I aspire to emulate for the rest of my career.
