Sandwich Project grows to feed area’s needy By JAKE DRUKMAN jake@appenmedia.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — What began as a pair of Dunwoody neighbors making sandwiches to help feed the hungry has grown a thousandfold. The Sandwich Project, an organization that began in April 2020 in Dunwoody, now has volunteers and recipients across Metro Atlanta. The goal is simple: to provide nutritious, filling food to any who may need it. It started when neighbors Marcy Louza and Lisa Hiles began making sandwiches with a church group to feed the food insecure. The effort quickly expanded to a core group of 12, who put their talents together to spread the word further. Less than two years later, The Sandwich Project now boasts 2,500 volunteers working to feed Metro Atlanta’s hungry and has distributed more than 320,000 sandwiches. “This is the definition of grassroots,” Louza said. “It was the right combination of people, everybody coming in with a unique skillset.” The Sandwich Project’s volunteers buy bread, lunch meat and cheese to make into sandwiches. The project doesn’t add condiments or other toppings. Volunteers then pack the sandwiches in individual zip-close bags and gather them back in the bread bag. Once they’re packed, volunteers drop them off at any of the Sandwich Project’s more than 25 collection locations around Metro Atlanta. Certain collection points also collect peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, kept separate from meat and cheese sandwiches. The

The Dunwoody Police Department reported that late Tuesday night Parsons was involved in a single-car crash on Sumac Drive in Dunwoody. According to the statement, Parsons was driving his personal vehicle and off-duty when he crashed. Georgia State Patrol arrested Parsons at the scene and transported him to DeKalb County Jail. Jail records indicate he remains incarcerated as of Thursday afternoon. Parsons is the City of Dunwoody’s police information officer and has served on the force for since 2009.

Woman reports robbery after ATM transaction DUNWOODY, Ga. –– Police responded to a robbery call Jan. 2 at Perimeter Mall. The victim reported that someone had stolen $700 cash out of her hands after she’d withdrawn the money from the ATM at the mall. Prior to entering the mall, the victim said she had a brief encounter with a male subject who said “she was cute” and asked for her Instagram handle. They exchanged usernames but not phone numbers or names. The victim entered the mall, shopped at Zara’s, then stopped at the ATM to make three withdrawals from her Wells Fargo bank account, totaling in $500. As she was combining the cash she already had – $200 – the same male she met outside ran up to her and took the money out of her hands. The male suspect fled on foot in an unknown direction through the mall. The suspect was a black male, in his late 20s to early 30s. He is approximately 5’8’’ and weighs 145 lbs. He was last

An employee stated a black female wearing a yellow top and yellow pants with upper body neck area tattoos put merchandise into a bag, then began walking toward the exit. DUI arrest Ivey Spiker, 23, of Druid Hills Road, Brookhaven, was arrested Jan. 2 for DUI and following too close. The suspect got into a gray Dodge Charger. The employee said she recognized the female suspect from another suspected shoplifting incident.
Vehicles burglarized on Kingsland Drive DUNWOODY, Ga. –– A Dunwoody man reported his car was burglarized Jan. 16 on Kingsland Drive. The victim told police that an unknown, black male wearing a white hoodie, black pants and black sneakers walked up his driveway and gained entry to his gray Ford Explorer and his tan Ford Ranger. A CD case and the vehicle manual were taken from the Explorer, but the victim reported nothing taken from the Ranger. The Ranger had been rummaged through, but nothing taken. The suspect fled down the driveway.
Clerk of courts warns citizens of jury scam By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County Clerk of Courts Greg G. Allen is continuing to warn citizens of a jury scam that has been reoccurring for the past six years. Allen said his office received more than half a dozen calls a week in December from residents who reported getting calls from someone posing as a deputy sheriff or deputy clerk and
asking for $1,500 for failing to appear for jury duty. The calls increased following Thanksgiving and just before Christmas. Allen said they have since subsided, but his office continues to field inquiries from residents and others who confuse it with Forsyth County, North Carolina, because the scam is nationwide. Allen said the scam originated in prisons, with inmates using contraband cell phones to research counties
and names to call unsuspected citizens with the scam. More recently, the scammers appear to be from outside the U.S. Allen said their accents and return phone numbers are not local to Georgia. In the call, the caller usually states, “You failed to report for jury duty and a warrant is being issued for your arrest.” When the resident states they never received a jury summons or

City Council tackles contracts, future expenses By JEFFREY ALBERTSON newsroom@appenmedia.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — The Dunwoody City Council got down to business Jan. 24 with a full plate of contract renewals and discussion of other equipment purchases totaling well over $1 million. The council unanimously approved two technology expenditures and the sale of surplus equipment. The license for ESRI – the city’s primary GIS mapping program – was extended for three years at a total cost of $116,100. Another $18,518 expenditure for risk management and cyber threat monitoring offered by Roswellbased Interdev was approved. The council also signed off on selling surplus equipment to the City of Doraville for $1. The equipment includes 48 police laptops, 81 monitors, 71 desktop/laptops and 25 other technology items, a city memo dated Jan. 24 said. Included also are tablet, network routers and docking stations. The computer equipment will be sold without hard drives and operating systems. Two contracts were approved, one for a Brook Run Park lighting project for $800,000 and another to increase allocation to a citywide road improvement contract by $150,000 – about twothirds of it coming from a state grant. Discussion items centered on replacing police tasers, creating a human resources position and a shared use project near Dunwoody High School. The Police Department’s current Axon X2 tasers are out of warranty and experiencing battery issues. The city is considering replacing the equipment
with 64 Axon 7s, which when drawn from a holster activate all body and vehicle cameras within a certain radius. According to a company invoice, the total replacement cost is $230,404 to be paid over five years. The allocation would come from special purpose sales tax funds. Police Chief Billy Grogan said Dunwoody police discharge tasers about once or twice per week. Increased workload for the city’s two full-time human resources employees led to discussion to hire a department manager. The annual pay would range from $63,000 to $104,000, and the contract would run through 2023, unless reauthorized by the council. Officials also discussed the Vermack Road shared use project which addresses utility poles located in the middle of the sidewalk. The 5 ½ foot wide sidewalk narrows by more than a foot at five locations, according to a report from Public Work Director Michael Smith. The Americans with Disabilities Act requires 4-feet widths on sidewalks. Remediation would also address five curb ramps that are not ADA compliant. The estimated cost is $490,000. Late in the meeting, the council recessed to executive session to discuss real estate and legal matters. When council members reconvened about 90 minutes later, they took the opportunity to note the passing of noted Dunwoody journalist and longtime Crier publisher Dick Williams, who died of congestive heart failure Jan. 20. “(Williams) was referred to as one of the founding fathers,” Councilman

Zoom monitors and spaced seating are in place ahead of the Jan. 24 Dunwoody City Council meeting at City Hall. While a majority of council members attended the meeting in person, the city expects to continue hybrid meetings until next month. Tom Lambert said. “I believe that’s true because his coverage of the Dunwoody cityhood movement was a vital part in
us becoming a city, and beyond that, his community contributions sponsoring the parade and light up Dunwoody.”

The Sept. 18, 1996, edition of the Crier newspaper shared the news of Dick Williams’ purchase of the newspaper. The headline read “New owners for Crier newspapers: Susan Courtemanche to VALERIE step aside after 18 BIGGERSTAFF years.” Susan Courtemanche, outgoing owner, and new owner Dick Williams each shared their thoughts as the newspaper changed hands. Courtemanche felt comfortable handing the reins to Williams. “It sure helps to know the new owner, Dick Williams, has all the knowledge, expertise, and enthusiasm to make the Crier the best local paper in the state of Georgia,” she said. “Dick has been with the Atlanta Journal and Constitution for 17 years. You also know him as host of ‘The Georgia Gang’ on WAGA-TV.” The new owner expressed his gratitude. “What a rare opportunity you and Susan Courtemanche have afforded me and my family,” Williams said. “In front of us now is the chance to serve the community in which we’ve built a foundation. Our home is here, our church is here, and our business interests are here.” Dick Williams and wife Rebecca Chase Williams were living inside the Perimeter in Brookhaven close to the cluster of hospitals along Peachtree Dunwoody Road and where the cities of Sandy Springs, Dunwoody and Brookhaven meet. Of course, none of these were cities in 1996. The Crier delivery route included the Williams’ neighborhood. “My wife and I (those of you who have read me in another newspaper for years may know her as the woman who occasionally share my name) would like to invite you to be our partners,” Williams said. “Dunwoody, whatever it is, deserves a newspaper of record. It deserves a newspaper that shares our joys and sorrows. It deserves a newspaper that keeps count of those who do good for others, who work hard to build some-

Tell us how best to serve you, inform you, and yes, entertain you. “Susan Courtemanche’s labor of love has spotlighted all that’s good in Dunwoody for the last 20 years. She has decided to hand that duty off to someone else. We accept that challenge. But we can’t do it without your help. Journalists know a lot, but they learn it from people who know more. About Dunwoody, you are the best source.” Williams followed through with his commitment to the community for 22 years, until his retirement in 2019. Appen Media acquired the Dunwoody Crier, and his legacy lives on with the continued publication of the newspaper. Archives of the Dunwoody Crier are held by The Atlanta History Center, DeKalb History Center and Dunwoody Preservation Trust. A few notes about time
On August 15, I moved a year closer to being old — 67 to be exact. I don’t feel old though — maybe 28? This year I have managed to begin to selfdestruct, howRAY APPEN ever. Fell off a box Publisher Emeritus in our new old ray@appenmedia.com remodeled home repairing an overhead light and broke two ribs when the box collapsed. I fell hard against a metal closet pole. A few weeks later I went up on our roof (our wet roof) to blow off the leaves. When I stepped back onto the ladder it started sliding backward from the wet deck, and when I landed, I thought I had shattered my ankle. It turns out that I only tore ligaments and tendons or something like that. So, I do see the future; I am my own worst threat. I’ve always thought, I just want to finish well. It would be a shame to spoil that by making stupid decisions, no? Those falls for sure have delayed my debut on the senior pro tennis tour, but they didn’t interfere with my decades-long quest to become a proficient piano player. Most likely I still have 10 years or so that I need to get there. Dick Williams, the man who founded the Dunwoody Crier that we now publish, died this week at 77 years old. He was a kindred soul and hard-core newspaper man. When he announced that he was shutting down the Crier a couple years ago I drove down to Dunwoody and convinced him to let us keep his newspaper going. We sat in his living room and talked shop and discovered that we both collected fountain pens — of course,
what better hobby for newspaper folk? His death — although I knew he was not in good health — rattled me. Hard core news guys are not supposed to die, or at least at such a young age. “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less… any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind.” John Donne, written in 1624. That is, our world is the less for Dick’s death. I keep getting these mortality reminders, and I am not happy with them. I still have too much to get done. That includes getting back out on the Appalachian Trail again at some point. The oldest person to hike the trail, I think, thru-hiked it in his mid 80s. No way I am going to let him keep that record. But I am consoled and comforted by many things and many people. It only takes seeing a current picture of Keith for me to know that everything is going to be OK. So long as the Stones keep touring, and Keith keeps smoking those Marlboro reds and whatever else he continues to partake of, and still strut across that stage making that lead guitar send chills up our spines, I’m good. And my kids are now unbelievably not youngsters anymore — 25, 31, and 33 — no way. But they give me a continuous reason to marvel, celebrate, and glow. At the end of the day, this theater that is my children and grandchildren just wraps around my vision, my horizon, and my existence like a rainbow paints the sky after rain. I don’t think that anything in life matters more. They are my raison d’etre. Now, I love my children and grandchildren. And I love Keith too, but seriously, we’ve got a problem — individually and collectively.

This virus stuff is real. The implosion of our earth is real; just look around. The social and political chaos we have created is real too, and it is getting worse. Do you think it all just might be a wakeup call? Aren’t we all done with this toxic insanity? And don’t we all have better things to do with our time — our very blink-of-an-eye, tiny slice of time we have been given? When you sit back and consider the brevity and the fragility of our humanity, one has to wonder what we are thinking or whether we are thinking at all. Choices, it’s all about choices. Help someone or hurt someone. Love someone or hate them. Put even more money in our own pocket or put a little into pockets that are empty. Feed someone or watch them starve. Help heal the only earth we have or keep destroying it. Participate in the inane political stupidity or do something meaningful or helpful instead. Are these hard decisions for us? We all know that if we want to fix this stuff it has a cost; it always does. We know it will hurt and require sacrifice, compromise and empathy. And we all know that fixing this world begins with making small personal changes in our own lives, something that we can start doing today; yes we can. Aren’t we about out of timeouts? We’re not blind. We’re not stupid. And we know we only have a brief moment to get it right — to “fix” and do it right — to make our own personal world and our collective world better, better for ourselves, for our children, and for their children. After all, isn’t that what it is all about? What are we waiting for? Why are we waiting? I don’t think that waiting is going to fix anything, do you? What’s your next step? What’s mine? Do it.

The numbers are in! Brought tp you by– Dan Griffin, Broker Associate Compass
The 2021 home sales numbers that is… There has been a tremendous amount of news related to the unique characteristics of the real GRIFFIN estate market across the country. As you have probably read, home buyers are moving up for more work and living space, and moving out of urban areas since in-office time has decreased. No more commute! At least for now. The commercial real estate industry is “shifting” in the midst of these trends. Shopping centers are being demolished and “re-purposed”. Some office buildings are being converted into housing units. But back here in DUNWOODY,
Georgia, the past two years have been wonderful for sellers, and challenging for buyers. Sellers control the process in an historic way! Buyers win with cash, paying over list price and over appraised value. As a buyer, it also helps to eliminate conditions, and be willing to pay the “appraisal gap” if necessary. In the city of Dunwoody, we had 398 single-family home sales last year that were listed in First Multiple Listing Service. This is up from 336 in 2020, an 18.5% increase. The average sales price was $628,741, an 18% increase, and sold in an average of 24 days. The previous year, the average sales price was $532,918 with 42 average days on market. Demand out-stripped supply. If you would like to receive detailed sales information for your neighborhood, please let me know. Dan Griffin, Broker Associate Compass, Inc. dan.griffin@compass.com

He attended Paris High School in Paris, KY and the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT, graduating in 1951 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. LORAN. Retiring from active service in 1956, George served in the USGC reserves until 1990, retiring with the rank Commander. Moving to NYC, George continued his education getting his MS in Industrial Engineering from Columbia University in 1959 and his MBA from NYU in 1964. During this time, he also started his professional career first as a Marine Engineer for Mobile Oil Co. then working at IBM where he worked in a variety of roles until his retirement in 1989 as a member of the Quarter Century Club. It was in NYC where George met the love of his life, JoAnn Heidenreich, whom he married in 1960 and immediately started a family with three daughters, Lynn, Ellen and Susan, and their “prince”, Christopher. Living first in Queens, followed by two homes in New Jersey, George and JoAnn made lifelong friends and provided their

family with a home filled with love. In 1974, George was transferred to Atlanta and settled in Dunwoody where he fulfilled his boyhood dream of coaching youth football and baseball at Murphy Candler Park and basketball at St. Jude Catholic Church. After retiring from IBM, he worked for a small computer company and taught computer classes at a local community college before fully retiring in 2000. He was a founding member of All Saints Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus and an active parishioner at St. Jude Catholic Church. George and JoAnn were married 56 glorious years. His later years were spent with JoAnn traveling the world and spending time his family. He and JoAnn travelled frequently to Europe, including many trips to his ancestral homeland, Ireland. They visited exotic locales like Israel and Egypt and traveled the United States extensively.
Scam: Continued from Page 2 notice to appear in court, the caller states they can avoid arrest and incarceration by paying a fine through a “green dot card,” which is a prepaid MasterCard or Visa card available for purchase at local retailers. Recently, Allen said, the scammers have gotten more sophisticated with their approach by using either his own name or the names of those on the command staff in the sheriff’s office to convince potential victims of their legitimacy. But he said under no circumstance should citizens purchase prepaid cards and give the card numbers over the phone. “My staff regularly contacts jurors concerning jury duty, but we never ask potential jurors for a financial transaction over the phone,” Allen
He is preceded in death by his parents and his beloved JoAnn. He is survived by his children, L ynn Hicks, Ellen Whitley (Chris), Susan Summers (George), Chris Doyle (Mary), his grandchildren Carrie Hicks, Jeanne & Jack Whitley, Taylor & Ryan Pahl, Riley, Ben & Aidan Doyle, his sister Ann Marie Gilvin and numerous cousins, nieces & nephews. The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to his care givers Nellie, Carole, Elza, and Hannah and to Long Leaf Hospice. A celebration mass will be held at St. Jude Catholic Church, Sandy Springs on March 11, 2022 at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Jude Chapter, 7171 Glenridge Drive, Sandy Springs GA 30328. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Fischer Funeral Care and Cremation Services, Chamblee GA.
said. “If you receive a call from anyone who says he or she works for my office or Sheriff Ron Freeman’s office and the caller asks you to pay a fine by a card, make a note of the caller’s phone number, hang up the phone and do not talk to them.” In 2018, a federal grand jury indicted 42-year-old Orenthial Walker, a convicted felon from Decatur, on felony charges for running an interstate jury duty scam that extorted $200,000 from victims. Federal agents said an investigation revealed the scam operated out of Alabama and linked it to Georgia state prison inmates who coordinated the operation from behind bars. For concerns regarding jury duty, contact the Clerk of Courts staff that performs jury management at 770781-2120 and press option 2. They can also be reached by email at jury@ forsythco.com, or citizens can visit the courthouse to discuss the matter in person.

Volunteering doesn’t require a consistent time commitment. The project collects sandwiches every Wednesday, but many volunteers just make sandwiches whenever they have the free time, whether it’s once a week or once a month. Renee Harris, The Sandwich Project director of Marketing and Development, said the project doesn’t only focus on feeding people without homes. Even those with stable housing can struggle to put food on the table. “There are a lot of families who do their best day to day and still don’t have enough money at the end of the month,” Harris said. “When people think about people being hungry, they often think about people on the streets. But we have families in our community that are struggling.” With the goal of helping any who need it, the project doesn’t work on its own. The organization partners with 19 other groups around north Georgia who help those in need. Henry Lam, founder of the Eye Believe Foundation, said his charity has been cooking and distributing food to the needy for nearly three years. He said
partnering with The Sandwich Project around six months ago has helped the foundation fill the gaps in its services. “It’s been a blessing,” Lam said. “[The Sandwich Project] helps to support us, gives us more time to be able to focus on other things that are needed out there. We’re separate organizations, but we’re just like family.” Lam said The Sandwich Project gives Eye Believe thousands of sandwiches every week. Eye Believe then ensures they go to those who need them. Sissy Luciani, another Dunwoody resident, has volunteered with The Sandwich Project since it began. She and her son get together every week to make a couple dozen sandwiches for the project. She said it’s hard to overstate the difference the work can make. “What we’re doing is directly affecting somebody’s well-being, their positive attitude,” Luciani said. “They’re knowing that somebody who doesn’t even know them cares about them.” The Sandwich Project has a public Instagram page as well as a Facebook group for its volunteers. The group allows volunteers to organize pickups, discuss services or share photos and videos of their work. Growing more volunteers The project planned an outdoor, in-person sandwich making event in Dunwoody for Martin Luther King Jr.
Day. Co-founder Marcy Louza said around 100 people had signed up to participate. With news of the winter storm coming, the project postponed the get-together. “What happened next was just unbelievable and wonderful,” Louza said. “We had about 7,000 sandwiches delivered to us that day. I guess when it got canceled people understood that in this cold we especially need to feed people, and they just rose to the occasion.” Louza said she isn’t sure where the campaign goes from here. The sudden, explosive growth wasn’t something she had ever expected. She said the most important things to her were drawing attention to the issue of hunger and making sure someone was around to address it. Louza said The Sandwich Project should keep working as long as it can and mentor the next generation of volunteers who want to feed people. Even if The Sandwich Project were to disband in the future, she said, similar groups would hopefully step in to take its place. “It’s about working together, not competitively but cooperatively to get as many people fed each week as we can,” Louza said. “Whatever that means for the future. If that means The Sandwich Project or it means something else, it’s important that we continue to do this work.”
