Family makes music with underwater backdrop By CATHY COBBS newsroom@appenmediagroup.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — The Rogers’ family, the musically talented Dunwoody-area siblings consisting of a set of twins, triplets and two other children, has launched its most ambitious collaboration yet — a piano montage that features in its background whale sharks circling a tank at the Georgia Aquarium. The video, released Feb. 26, was filmed last October at the world’s second largest aquarium, the result of hours of planning and coordination between the seven siblings — twins Keenan and Devon, 27; triplets Aidan, Corin and Brydan, 25; Leith, 22 and Ivy Catherine, 19. “It’s a lot of moving parts,” Corin said. “There were a lot of obstacles to creating and rehearsing because we are spread all over Atlanta, in light of COVID-19 and the fact that we all have regular full-time jobs or school.” The pandemic also provided plenty of challenges to their usual collaboration process, which normally involves a team, in-person approach to developing a musical production that revolves around every part of the piano — the keys, the strings and virtually every surface that can produce a musical contribution. Because of social distancing, the Rogers could not collaborate as usual with the planning and execution of the production, which was entitled “Kiss the Girl/Under The Sea,” a musical mashup of the two hits. They were also limited in filming time, which had to be consolidated to a single day, after the aquarium’s closing hours. “We basically had five hours to load in the pianos (Yamahas donated by the Yamaha Entertainment Group), do the video and take it all down, which was a lot of pressure,” Corin said. “It was also a bit extra, because we wanted to take advantage of the whale sharks coming through the shots.” The Rogers had about 40 seconds lead time to set up “cool shots” that featured some of the four whale sharks circling past the camera. “We wanted to time our music and the lyrics to when the sharks came into the shot, so that was additional pressure,” Corin said.

From left, Keenan, Brydan, Aidan, Devon, Leith, Ivy Catherine and Corin Rogers. But the end product, after about 40-50 different takes, the Rogers said, was worth all the pre-production and post-production work. And the public agrees. In the two weeks since the video was released on YouTube in late February, it has more than 27,000 views. “It’s really hard to believe that there is a way that we can top this,” Corin said, “but we have about four or five (song collaborations) in the works that we’d like to get in production.” The Rogers, who grew up in the Ashford Chase subdivision, started playing piano at the age of 4, under the tutelage of their mother, who is a music professor at Georgia State University. Although they expanded their expertise to include flute, oboe, guitar, drums and other instruments, the family continues to come back to its first love, the piano.

MEG BUSCEMA/SPECIAL

“We all still enjoy playing, and it’s really fun to see all the different ways that we can make music from the piano beyond the traditional methods,” Corin said. As expected, sibling rivalry comes into play during the planning of the videos that they have produced since 2016, Corin said, but the brothers and sister manage to work it out via their own brand of compromise. “We try for a decentralization of power by drawing up a spreadsheet of what everyone will play and what they will do,” he said. “The controversies usually involve who gets the coolest parts and when and where they will be playing. But by the end, we all have some cool parts, so for the most part, we are all happy.” All of the Rogers’ family videos can be found on YouTube by searching “Rogers Family” or visiting youtube. com/channel/UCF35mWPwH7adkdzLescCZyQ.

Police investigate report of theft from mailbox DUNWOODY, Ga. — Police investigated after a resident along Perimeter Trace East reported a pair of Michael Kors tennis shoes stolen from her mailbox on Feb. 23. The victim received a package, which contained the shoes, in a delivery bin at her apartment complex on Feb. 15. When she went to retrieve the box the next day, the package was gone. She told police she reported the theft after the management company told her surveillance footage showed someone taking the package. Property managers reviewed the footage but could not identify the woman who took the delivery. The victim declined to press charges and told police she just wanted her shoes back.

Man found sleeping in hotel storage bin DUNWOODY, Ga. — Police responded to the Marriott Hotel on Perimeter Center Parkway for a criminal trespassing call Feb. 27. Officers found Derwin Raynard Caldwell, 57, sleeping in a storage bin. He was not a guest of the hotel. Caldwell, of Legacy Drive SW, Atlanta, was arrested on a Fulton County Sheriff’s Office warrant. He was transferred from DeKalb County custody to the Fulton County Jail on March 1. Records show his warrant stemmed from probation violations on theft, burglary and reckless driving charges from 2008 and 2009.

Parents plan special ceremony for local graduates By CATHY COBBS newsroom@appenmediagroup.com DUNWOODY, Ga. – A group of parents are making their own plans to stage a celebration for the Dunwoody High School Class of 2021. The parents are raising money with the help of a major benefactor, Atlantabased Insight Global. The group, Grad Cats 2021, consists of about 100 parents and launched a GoFundMe page (gofundme. com/f/gradcats-2021) to raise the approximately $32,000 needed to rent the Ameris Ampitheater in Alpharetta on May 19. The facility, which normally seats 12,000, will easily accommodate social distancing protocols for the 3,000 people who are expected to attend. COVID protocols will be put into place to ensure a safe event, according to the Grad Cats organizers. Dunwoody High School’s graduating class numbers about 500. The school had about 2,100 students enrolled in 2019, according to the latest statistics on the DeKalb County Schools website. The group emphasizes that this does not replace DeKalb County’s graduation ceremony for Dunwoody High School, which is scheduled for May 24 at Hallford Stadium. The group announced on February 26 that the fundraising goal had been met.

“A huge thank you to everyone who donated! We will keep this Go Fund Me open and continue to collect funds for our event — additional funds will be used for things such as a photographer, awards/certificates, stage decor, etc.,” organizers posted. As of March 4, the group had raised $32,850 gathered from 170 donors, most of them anonymous pledges. The largest contribution, however, was $10,000 from Insight Global, an Atlanta-based staffing company with its headquarters on Hammond Drive. Although the evening has not been completely planned out, organizers hope to include recognition of achievements, music, drama, speakers chosen by the students, a slideshow featuring the graduates in kindergarten and today, and other opportunities to celebrate this year’s graduates. The event is optional for students and families, and is intended to be similar to a baccalaureate, rather than a graduation, according to the Go Fund Me Page, “focusing on what’s great honorable and special about this group of kids and this particular class.” A representative from Insight Global did not respond to a request for comment from the Crier. The school is to begin a phased return to the classroom this week.

Perimeter CIDs executive speaks at Rotary Club DUNWOODY, Ga. — Ann Hanlon, CEO of the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts, was the featured speaker at a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Dunwoody. Hanlon spoke of the many successes of the CIDs in the area. Community Improvement Districts are self-taxing entities made up of commercial property owners that use the additional property taxes to help accelerate needed transportation and infrastructure improvements. The Perimeter CIDs, Hanlon said, have brought many improvements to transportation and beautification, earning Dunwoody the title of “the South’s premier livable center.” The organization is actually two CIDs because a taxing district can lie in one county only. The PCIDs operate in Fulton and DeKalb counties. Together, they spend $8 million a year, with projects chosen by the PCIDs Board of Directors, composed of elected repre-

sentatives from Perimeter Mall, Ravinia, State Farm, Cox, UPS and others. The Dunwoody area has been recognized for having maintained economic stability during the pandemic. The goals of the PCID HANLON include maintaining and enhancing access into and out of the district, by both transit and vehicle, Hanlon said. Another goal is enhancing mobility within the district for all modes of transportation, including sidewalks, bike lanes and trails, she said. Hanlon emphasized the value of the cooperation of the City of Dunwoody, which is paying for half of a trail from Hammond to Perimeter Center West. She also said to watch for the upcoming mural art for MARTA at the Dunwoody station this spring.

DeKalb Tax Commissioner reminds homeowners to apply for homestead exemptions prior to deadline DECATUR, Ga. – Homeowners in DeKalb County are encouraged to apply online for basic homestead exemptions before the April 1 deadline. Individuals must own and occupy the home as their primary residence as of Jan. 1, 2021, have all vehicles registered there, file taxes from the property, and not have an exemption anywhere else. For all exemptions, eligibility and document requirements, please visit www.dekalbtax.org/ exemptions. “Homestead exemptions provide significant savings for property owners who own and live at their primary residence,” says DeKalb County Tax Commissioner Irvin J. Johnson. “Now is the time to plan ahead and apply early to avoid

delays. Applications received after April 1 will be processed for the following year.” In addition to the basic homestead exemption available to all homeowners, special tax exemptions are also available for eligible senior citizens ages 62 and older, disabled residents, disabled veterans or surviving spouse, surviving spouse of a U.S. service member, and surviving spouse of a peace officer or firefighter. Age and income requirements must be met to qualify for all senior exemptions. Basic homestead applications may be submitted online at dekalbtax.org/ file-homestead-exemption, by mail, drop box, or in person. Beginning Monday, March 1 homeowners can schedule an appointment.

Recuperative In-Home Care Can be the Key to a Healthier Future You’ve had a planned procedure or were faced with emergency surgery. The next critical step is a successful recovery, and to understand that people heal more slowly and can have more complications with age. It’s important to take stock of the care you’ll need when you get home, whether it’s directly from the hospital or from a rehabilitation center. At Home Helpers of North Atlanta, we understand the difference a proactive level of Care Management can make for a faster and more successful recovery. The transition home can be very challenging as your mobility, health and emotional needs have changed. With current COVID concerns, your support network must also be safe and appropriately use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Juggling physical or occupational therapy visits, managing nutritional needs and therapy homework can be overwhelming. Home visits from Physical or Occupational Therapists typically happen one to three times a week. We know the hardest part for you or an older loved one can be carrying out therapy homework instructions daily and exercising faithfully, but this can determine your mobility and best quality of life going forward. Here are some things to consider on your recovery journey. Your doctor will do a medical assessment to determine your in-home care needs, and what level of assistance you’ll need with the activities of daily living (ADL’s). With in-home care, you may be discharged directly home. If you enter a rehabilitation facility, that assessment will happen when you’re ready to be discharged. In either case, work with your in-home care agency to determine a plan of care in advance. There are five areas of integrated wellness for a holistic approach we believe must be considered for the best level of recuperation. The safety of your current situation, whether hydration and nutrition needs are being met, what level of daily physical and thera-

peutic activity should be followed, your mental health, and levels of social and emotional support. The question we constantly seek to answer is where are you today, and what can we do to move your recuperation forward? Your skilled Home Helpers caregiver can take notes at therapist visits, help you follow a therapy homework schedule, remember any restrictions you should follow, help around the house, assist with personal care, infection control and medication reminders. They can provide specialized support for stroke recuperation, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, etc. Change is constant as you recover, and it’s important to adapt quickly to your situation. It’s not enough to set up a care plan and make a wonderful match of heart centered caregiver to client. It takes proactive attention to detail by a team with depth and skill. At Home Helpers we have added Care Managers who form a critical communication and coordination link with you and your family as needs arise. We’re here to help – from six hours a day to 24/7 and live-in care. For a free consultation please call Home Helpers of North Atlanta at (678) 430-8511.

Lent midst the pandemic Lent began with Ash Wednesday on Feb. 17, lasting 40 days through Holy Saturday, April 3, prelude to the joy of Easter Sunday. The word Lent comes from Anglo-Saxon LEWIS J. WALKER, CFP the word lecten, meaning “Spring,” and lenctentid, signifying “Springtide,” and also “March,” the month in which the majority of the Lenten period falls. Lenten observances have ancient roots. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving are basic tenets of the three Abrahamic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The giving of money, goods and services to the poor and struggling is a pillar of God-centered living, virtues that receive added focus during Lent. In Old Testament writings, Tobit instructs his son to “perform good works all the days of your life, and do not tread the paths of wrongdoing...Give alms from your possessions. Do not turn your face away from the poor, and God’s face will not be turned away from you. Son, give alms in proportion to what you own. If you have great wealth, give alms out of your abundance; if you have but little, distribute even some of that.” Tobit 4:5;7-8. Service and sacrifice garner added attention as we observe the bookends of Christ’s earthly journey, His birth dur-

ing the Christmas season, His death and resurrection celebrated during Lent and Easter. There’s evidence of clandestine Lenten preparations in the early days of the Church, but Lenten activities became more visible after the Romans legalized Christianity in 313 A.D. Lent recognizes the spiritual significance of the number 40. Noah endured the flood for 40 days. Climbing Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments, “Moses stayed there with the Lord for forty days and forty nights without eating any food or drinking any water, and he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant.” Exodus 34:28. Elijah walked for 40 days and 40 nights to the mountain of the Lord, Mount Horeb (another name for Mount Sinai), 1 Kings 19:8. Tempted by the devil in the desert, “Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry.” The devil offered bread and Jesus replied, “One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4. During Lent it’s common to “give something up.” But COVID-19 has forced many people to “give things up” involuntarily. We hear of suffering, people out of work, unable to pay rent, hunger. This Lenten season offers opportunities to reach out, giving time, talent and treasure, helping those in difficult straits. Worthy charities need you. At one parish, the St. Vincent DePaul

Society food pantry is in dire need of food and non-food items: shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bar soap, toilet paper, laundry and dish detergent. Loading up on items for delivery to the church would be a worthy effort. There’s more stress and difficulty in our North Fulton neighborhoods than you might imagine. Churches, synagogues, charities, food banks, shelters, and other sources of uplifting outreach need volunteers and financial support. With stock averages at or near all-time highs, gifts of highly appreciated stock from a personal account can be a timely and tax-wise gift. If you have qualified retirement plans such as IRA, 401(K), SEPIRA, you have another tax-smart opportunity. If your 70th birthday is July 1, 2019 or later, you must begin taking Required Minimum Distributions (RMD) in the year you turn age 72. Those who reached 70 ½ in 2019 or prior were subject to annual RMD withdrawals, except during the pandemic in 2020, when RMDs were suspended. This year, they’re back! Rather than pay taxes on RMD distributions, account holders may direct a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) be sent to a charity or charities of up to $100,000 per year, avoiding a taxable distribution. This may lower your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) on which your Medicare premiums are based, for added savings. For 2021, the Standard Deduction for

singles is $12,550; married filing jointly, $25,100; head of household, $18,800. Seniors with homes paid for and medical coverage may not have sufficient tax deductions to warrant itemizing. In that case, supporting charities with RMD money makes sense. For 2021, taxpayers who are at least 65 years old or blind can claim an additional standard deduction of $1,350 ($1,700 using single or head of household filing status). If you take the standard deduction, for 2021 you may deduct a charitable contribution up to $300 single, $600 filing jointly. Tax strategies aside, what counts is the giving of self to help others. St. Gregory Nazianzen, 4th century theologian and philosopher, advised, “Give something, however small, to the one in need. For it is not small to one who has nothing. Neither is it small to God, if we have given what we could.” Given the privations of COVID-19, the reflections of Lent are even more meaningful as we seek recovery and renewal. Spruill Center prepares for major online fundraiser By CATHY COBBS newsroom@appenmediagroup.com DUNWOODY, Ga. —The Spruill Center for the Arts is again going virtual for its largest fundraiser of the year, Artistic Affair, but taking to the small screen has spurred the organizers to be even more creative. “When we realized we wouldn’t be able to host an in-person event again this year, we knew we’d have to get creative to make the event fun and exciting for our supporters,” said Spruill Center for the Arts CEO Alan Mothner. “So, we decided on a live broadcast format, working with EEP Events to help us put the show together. Our supporters can select from hand-curated menus from a great group of Dunwoody restaurants to put together a special meal at home while they join us for the event.” Artistic Affair, scheduled to go live at 7 p.m., March 20, will feature Spruill in-

structor Lauren Adams creating a painting that evening that will be auctioned off at the end of the night. There will also be a raffle for a $1,000 gift certificate to Lauderhills Fine Jewelry, handselected wine baskets from Vino Venue and a chance to win a free class for two at Spruill. The event will include a silent auction with more than 50 original works of art available for online bidding. “The great thing about doing the event virtually is that it really opens it up to the entire community,” Mothner said. “There’s truly something for everyone who wants to support the arts and artists.” The funds raised at the event will be used to support Spruill’s instructors, who have been hit hard financially due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “With the recent upswing in interest of students returning to in-person classes, having this fundraiser ensures that Spruill has the financial resources

to continue the safety protocols that we put into place when we first reopened back in June,” Mothner said. This year’s event is presented by Regency Centers. Other sponsors include Parker Poe, Dunwoody Crier, Arrow Exterminators, The Piedmont Bank, EEP Events, Interlokit, JWB Realty Services and Perimeter Center Improvement Districts. The event is free; however, patrons will need to register online to participate in the silent auction or purchase raffle tickets by visiting https://spruillarts. cbo.io. The Spruill Gallery, 4681 Ashford Dunwoody Road, features professional artist exhibition series, special events and a gift shop showcasing handcrafted items from local artists. More information about the Spruill Center for the Arts and complete course listings can be found by visiting its website (www. spruillarts.org).

been reprinted from 1881. Atlanta city directories show Chamblee working for the Georgia Pacific Railroad in 1889 and as a porter with the P.P. Car Company in 1891. The 1910 census lists Chamblee living in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Park Avenue. He was listed as married to Mattie Chamblee. Daughter Emily Spruce and granddaughter Rosa Lee Spruce are listed in the same household. That same year, Wylie H. Chamblee died from dropsy (edema) and was buried in the Hamilton County Cemetery. This may seem like the end of the story, but not for Michael Hitt. He traveled to Chattanooga to visit the Hamilton

County Cemetery only to find that no one knew the location. As a police officer and researcher, Hitt was able to locate the cemetery, hidden away in a ravine and in appalling condition. Now his goal is to work with the City of Chattanooga so that others can locate their loved ones in the Hamilton County Cemetery. He also wants to share all he learns with the city of Chamblee so that Wylie H. Chamblee can be recognized. and the Roswell Railroad. The post office application, dated September 10, 1881, is completed by James Monroe Bentley and George N. Flowers. At the time, Flowers was the postmaster of Doraville. Other information for the prospective post office includes a population of 100 people and a location 1½ miles from the Doraville Post Office and 2 miles from the Cross Keys Post Office. (National Archives Records of the Post Office Department, 1773-1971) In the space that says, “proposed office to be called” the name Edna is written and scratched through. Then the name Chamblee is written next in the same space. Why the name Edna was initially suggested for the post office in unknown. Looking through census records, Hitt found that Wylie H. Chamblee was born about 1855 in Georgia. Chamblee does not appear in the 1860 census, indicating he could have been born into slavery. He cannot be found in the 1870 census either but is listed in the 1880 census living in Suwanee with wife Roberta and working as a wood chopper. In 1888, Chamblee was a fireman with the Roswell Railroad. Hitt believes Chamblee may have been working for the Roswell Railroad as early as 1881 and that the 1888 newspaper article may have

While looking through newspaper articles about Camp Gordon, Michael Hitt read a 1917 Atlanta Constitution article which included the history of the name Chamblee. The article is confirmation that the VALERIE town was named for BIGGERSTAFF Wylie H. Chamblee, a Black man who was one of the petitioners for the post office. The article also reveals that Wylie Chamblee was last known to be in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Hitt has researched many topics of local history, including Roswell, Roswell Railroad, Native Americans, Civil War in Roswell, Chamblee, and World War I Camp Gordon, just to name a few. Now he is on a mission to learn all he can about Wylie H. Chamblee. A September 1888 Atlanta Constitution article reported that the railroad station would change names to match the post office name of Chamblee. The station initially went by the name Roswell Junction, causing confusion due to the nearby Roswell depot and post office. Chamblee was on the Charlotte and Atlanta Railroad
