The 21st annual Collector’s Nationals Hot Wheels convention held April 7-11 at the Crowne Plaza Perimeter at Ravinia helped boost occupancy rates for local hotels. The Dunwoody hospitality industry remains below numbers from before the pandemic hit in early 2020, but it has shown signs of recovery.
Local economic indicators point to business recovery Office, hotel occupancy rates continue trending upward By CATHY COBBS newsroom@appenmedia.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — Businesses in Dunwoody appear to be recovering slowly but surely from the economic downturn incurred by the world pandemic, according to several key indicators. Hotel occupancy is up significantly according to year-to-date data.
Workers are returning to offices in the Perimeter area, and restaurants and businesses are seeing a steady uptick in customers in the past few months. City officials say they are encouraged. “We haven’t seen a significant loss of businesses like we thought we

DUNWOODY, Ga. — The Dunwoody City Council was set to discuss a text amendment this week that would limit fence and wall heights to 6 feet in single-family residential areas. The measure, which was to be considered at the council’s Monday meeting, does not have the support of the Dunwoody Planning Commission. In a memo submitted to the council, Dunwoody Planning and Zoning Manager Paul Leonhardt said the 6-foot limit would only impact interior side and rear yards. Fences in front yards and side street yards would be limited to 4 feet in height or 6 feet “in specific situations.” The memo did not spell out out what specific situations would allow for construction of a 6-foot fence. While staff recommended approval of the text amendment, the memo pointed out that members of the Dunwoody Planning Commission voted 7-0 against the change at their March 9 meeting. “(The) main reasons (for the commission’s vote) are a desire not to take away fencing options and a low number of complaints about fence height,” the memo said. “Commissioners discussed options to take height into consideration, however no option that would be easy to administer was found.” The director’s memo indicated that Councilwoman Pam Tallmadge had requested staff to research and draft the text amendment. It listed limitations that are

in place in neighboring municipalities. Alpharetta, Atlanta and Doraville have 6-foot maximum heights, while Brookhaven, Chamblee, Decatur, Roswell and Sandy Springs have 8-foot maximums. The memo also said that staff supports the change “as long as there is no administrative permit process to exceed the limit.” “Any additional height would have to go through the Zoning Board of Appeals” with the applicant applying for a variance, the memo said. In other action, the council was expected to: Issue a proclamation honoring the Dunwoody Sustainability Committee’s Hero of the Year, Pattie Baker, in recognition of her efforts to advocate for alternative forms of transportation within the city. Swear in two new police officers, Alec Brown and Matthew Hansen. Issue a proclamation honoring the Chattahoochie Riverkeeper organization for its work promoting water safety and testing. Acknowledge the city receiving a certificate of achievement for excellence in financial reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association for its year-end report. Discuss funding sources for the Georgetown Gateway project, which will incorporate sidewalks, share use paths and streetscape improvements on Chamblee Dunwoody Road from Cotillion Drive to Peeler Road. Vote to approve high school student Seamus Stephenson to the Dunwoody Sustainability Committee as an ex-officio member.

Fleeing robber pulls gun to end victim’s pursuit DUNWOODY, Ga. — Police responded to a strong-arm robbery report March 30 at a Shell gas station along Winters Chapel Road. The 24-year-old victim told police a man pulled up to his vehicle as he was pumping gas and sold him an iPad for $300. When the victim pulled out his wallet to pay, the suspect snatched it and sped away. The victim reached into the car as the suspect took off and hung on as the car sped out of the parking lot. The driver made two abrupt turns to shake the victim loose, but hung on until he saw the robber pull a handgun from his waist, and he let go, according to police. The victim suffered abrasions to his knees and elbows from the fall. Video footage from gas station surveillance captured the chaotic exchange.
Police cite Acworth man for disturbance at store DUNWOODY, Ga. — Police were dispatched to Perimeter Mall along Ashford Dunwoody Road on April 3 following reports a man was waving a knife at customers inside the Macy’s store. Mall security led police to Erik Weston Hughes Jr., 31, who was wearing an American flag shirt. Hughes called the claims he was waving a knife an “exaggeration” and told officers people called the police on him because of his patriotic clothing. He claimed he’d been arrested before simply for wearing pro-Trump attire. Officers found a boxcutter in Hughes’ pocket, and Macy’s employees said 10 different customers reported that the man yelled at them while holding a knife with the blade open. Police arrested Hughes, of Park Bridge, Acworth, and charged him with disorderly conduct.

Podcast explores redistricting, reapportionment By JEFFREY ALBERTSON newsroom@appenmedia.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — John Tures, professor of political science at LaGrange College, joined a special episode of the Georgia Politics Podcast April 8 to discuss redistricting and reapportionment. The process of reapportionment is conducted every 10 years after the national census. It carries significant political ramification to federal and state elections. Gerrymandering, labeled “the most political activity in America,” and independent redistricting commissions are also covered. Tures is a frequent columnist in statewide and regional outlets. On March 31, the Georgia General Assembly adjourned its 40-day legislative session and is expected to take up redistricting in the coming months. The finalized census data, the key ingredient to this process, has not been been released. Here are excerpts from the episode: Q: When we talk about redistricting what is the most important part that you teach your students? What is the importance of the process? A: Gerrymandering is the drawing of legislative districts for partisan advantage. The legislators who are in charge, who win the election, at certain cycles just before
the census data comes out, they have the chance to draw districts to favor themselves. (The redistricting process) is typically state legislatures draw maps, sometimes the governor is involved (depending on the) state. Q: The other part of this process is reapportionment. Could you tell us about that? A: People move from state to state, and so some states lose votes and some states gain votes. It is possible that a state can gain people, but lose seats. We do not know the final numbers, but I believe Georgia should gain at least one Congressional seat. Q: What are some of the gerrymandering tactics used to draw districts? A: People who engage in gerrymandering might try to pack a district, put as many supporters of your opponent all in one district so that it wins like 100 percent of that district, but it enables you to pick up several districts by taking voters (and) packing them all into one big district. Cracking is trying to win a whole slew of districts very narrowly by breaking up your opponent’s support, so that they get 45 to 49 percent, but your party can win a whole bunch of narrow victories. Q: In states that use an independent commission to draw districts, is there less likelihood of litigation or partisanship? Is this a better model than one party drawing districts?

If you listen to podcasts on your phone search “The Georgia Politics Podcast” in the podcast store or go to northfulton.com/podcasts/thegeorgiapoliticspodcast A: I think initially I was very excited about the idea of Use QR Code or go to appenmedia.com/podcasts an independent commission that would try to look at the process and draw as fairly as possible. I like the idea of an independent commission. I like the idea of politicians not drawing their own seats and the idea of more competitive districts. The one thing I worry about, and we have not seen so many cases of these, are the states that have independent commissions actually having fairly drawn districts. and the end result not benefiting one party over the other. (Independent commissions are made) of unelected officials, and I worry about unelected officials drawing lines that can be so powerful. Any independent commission should have a set of rules to go by, like you can only cut through X percentage of counties. That way it would not seem to favor (one party over another).
Suburban bow hunting issue misses target in Legislature By JEFFREY ALBERTSON newsroom@appenmedia.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — A legislative proposal granting municipalities regulatory authority over the discharge of bows and arrows within their jurisdictions saw little movement during the Georgia General Assembly session that adjourned at midnight March 31. House Bill 471, sponsored by Reps. Josh McLaurin (D-Sandy Springs), Wes Cantrell (R-Woodstock), Angelika Kausche (D-Johns Creek) and Miriam Paris (D-Macon), was introduced and referred to the House Game, Fish and Parks Committee. The bill has not moved since Feb. 18.
The current text would give municipalities power to adopt reasonable ordinances regulating the use of bows and arrows in their jurisdiction, while protecting their use on private property. State law supersedes most local regulations on deer hunting. State law also requires the hunter to have a permit. The statutes of most area cities outlaw the use of weapons within local parks, including bow and arrows or crossbows. The issue of suburban bow hunting came to a head on Nov. 30, as the Dunwoody City Council found it lacked authority to quell resident concerns about bowhunting in the city. A deer was killed with a gun in a Dunwoody neighborhood about two
weeks prior to the meeting. Hunting with a firearm in a residential area is illegal. Using a bow and arrow is not. For many local residents, this was the first mention of the cottage industry that has sprung up in northern Atlanta suburbs seeking trophy deer that do not face the same threats as deer in rural parts of the state. One such group’s social media page says hunting deer is equally as challenging as obtaining a property owner’s permission. One local family faced a surprising trespasser Sunday, Nov. 29. The Rich

PAST TENSE
When Georgia had two time zones I came across two maps of Georgia recently that took me by surprise, because they showed Georgia split between Eastern and Central time zones. One map is held at the Hapeville Depot Museum and VALERIE Visitor Center in BIGGERSTAFF Hapeville, and the other appeared in the 1931 Atlanta Constitution. The city of Atlanta was in the Central time zone. As construction of railroads took place across the country in the 1800s, there was a need for schedules for these railroads. Long distance travel was possible. In the early days of railroad, the time at each stop along the railroad was dependent on the town. The Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific time zones were first established on Nov. 18, 1883. One year later, more than two dozen nations met in Washington D. C. for the International Meridian Conference. The zero point of longitude was chosen as the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England. Time zones did not become official across the United States until the Standard Time Zone Act of 1918. The line between Eastern and Central time zones
divided Georgia, with approximately onethird of the state falling in the Central Time Zone. This caused confusion for Georgia railroads and Georgia businesses. Leaders from the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce met on Nov. 23, 1918 to discuss whether Atlanta should remain in the Central time zone or be entirely in the Eastern time zone. Notes from the meeting are held in the Atlanta History Center archives. Those in attendance included Morris Rich, B. Davison, H.P. Hermance, Samuel C. Dobbs, Ivan Allen and D.H. Strauss. The two time zones were discussed and debated until 1941, when Gov. Eugene Talmadge pushed for all of Georgia to be in the Eastern Time Zone. The Interstate Commerce Commission, which regulated transportation carriers, pushed back on the change. Talmadge signed Eastern time for all of Georgia into law at 11:35 a.m., March 21, 1941 (Atlanta Constitution, March 22, 1941, “Third of Georgia Sets Clocks to New Time”). However, railroads, airlines and bus lines continued to operate using two time zones while waiting for approval by the Interstate Commerce Commission. In June 1941, the Interstate Commerce Division worked out an agreement with the state for all railroads to run on Eastern time. On March 22, the Atlanta newspapers featured photos of various clocks being changed throughout the city.
Old map at the Hapeville Depot Museum and Visitor Center shows the line separating the eastern third of Georgia into the Central Time Zone. Mayor Roy LeCraw changed the clock at City Hall. Clocks at the Georgia Capitol were changed. Dr. Thornwell Jacobs, president of Oglethorpe University announced the time change would take effect before classes started on Monday March 24, 1941. W.M. Rainey, superintendent of DeKalb County Schools announced school would start one hour later follow-
ing the time change; 9 a.m. rather than 8 a.m. Retail merchants and banks changed their clocks the following morning after Talmadge signed the law. The Atlanta Constitution declared, “It’s the same time all over Georgia now.” You can email Valerie at pasttensega@ gmail.com or visit her website at pasttensega.com.
Nature, memories and the promise of a better day Long ago, a man planted daffodils in the medians in the parking lot behind our church — hundreds and hundreds of daffodils. They always surprise me. Every year I wonder how many of us are left who see these flowers and remember how they got there, who planted them, or even the fact that that they haven’t always been RAY APPEN there — that they are gifts, delibPublisher Emeritus erate acts of grace planted by a ray@appenmedia.com slender wisp of a man with thinning white hair and clear blue eyes, who used to sit in the pews in which they sit now. Memory is personal and not always shared, no matter how much one might wish otherwise. Memory never ages, and yet, a hundred years from now, who will thank John for his daffodils? He always had a smile to share and a kind word that would brighten any day. That, I remember with vivid clarity. Most of the time, however, I don’t think about John, except when all those bulbs begin to emerge from long slumber and break ground, sending their long slender
green shoots up into the air and the light after a year of damp darkness, buried in the soil. They break the surface inching forward a day at a time — an hour at a time — unnoticed at first by all. Then, after days and weeks of effort they stretch out until, miraculously they begin to bloom and announce to the world, in chaste yellow as bright as the sun, that they have returned in all their simple glory; they have risen yet again without condition, or assistance, or human involvement — another morning, another spring, another year — for us — for all of us. In the parking lot, Vivaldi floats through the air as if cast out by sirens hidden among the trees that surround our parking space, or behind the cross high upon the gables of the church. The musicians however, all sit adjacent a defiant outdoor pulpit constructed of pine and steel nails by parishioners, what feels like years ago, but actually was only a few months ago — at the beginning of the pandemic which locked the doors of the church and pushed the congregation outside where it is safe. There sits one with a bassoon, and next to her a violinist, and then one with an oboe, and a keyboardist, and, with hands held high and swaying as if with the siren’s call, Drew, our lover of all music, conducts, his
smile, and the glimmer in his eyes unseen by the parishioners all parked in our cars or siting on our folding chairs on the pavement or in the medians in the grass. The morning has a chill, enough for a light blanket. Yet, the sun is bright and warm, and there is a slow breeze that must form layers high above the parking lot, above the siren’s Vivaldi, far above the church roof, upon which three raptors float but only for a few moments during the beginning of his sermon, wings spread that catch the warm updrafts as Ollie reads about the messenger beside the rolled door of the open tomb — the “young man dressed in white” — “clothing as white as snow.” And people gather in the warm sun and listen — some with eyes closed, others in still warmth and rapt attention. A subtle joy that seems to have been launched on the wings of music, and the breeze, and the bright sun with it’s warm embrace, distills the morning and promises better times ahead, that we are loved, and we are never far from his arms. I look around at the people and then the yellow daffodils at my feet, and I smile. A simple flower returns — like a rainbow. A promise is kept — with a pure simplicity — an act of grace and rebirth. Thank you, John. We remember.

While we cannot quantify the impact of immigration on demand and buying patterns, a
question lingers: Who will buy all of the boomer’s toys when they need to sell? Several acquaintances got the consumer bug and bought large and beautifully equipped motor homes. My brother, a retired large vehicle mechanic for the Florida forest service, flew to Iowa to take possession of a new motor home at a factory. Being the outdoorsy type, I’m always on the lookout for someplace new to explore. It’s surprising how often such places turn up too, if you don’t mind investing the work it takes to find them. STEVE HUDSON Just the other Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net day, for example, I found myself on a fishing foray among the hills and ridges of northwestern Georgia. I was tracking down a rumored stream said to offer remote solitude and plenty of fish. That rare combination is like the finest of wines, something to be savored and shared only after great deliberation. So I wasn’t surprised when my fishing buddy hinted at the presence of such a stream but stopped short of the all-important details. Instead, he gave me what I like to call “just enough information.” He didn’t tell me to go to this intersection and turn that way and then follow such-and-such a trail. Instead, he’d used a broad brush to point me in the general direction. “You have to do the rest,” he said. “But you might find it’s worth it.” So off I went. Eventually I found the stream. I rigged up the little fly rod. I tied on the recommended fly. I made some casts, and the fish responded well. Yes, it turned out to be a good little creek, and I enjoyed a most exceptionally pleasant afternoon. After a while it was time to head home. So, there I was, a solitary driver on a quiet backcountry road, my thoughts kind of wandering like they do sometimes on long drives. Do you do that too? After a while, my thoughts alighted on a book I got for Christmas last year. It’s called “Roadside Geology of Georgia,” and it brings the rockscape to life in a way that’s scientific enough to be interesting but not so much so that folks like me can’t keep up. That’s my kind of book. I recalled one part of the book that I’d lingered over just the day before. It was talking about fossils. Now don’t misunderstand. This is not a “go look here” kind of book. Instead, it paints a broad picture that gets you thinking. Like my fishing buddy, it’s a source of “just enough information.” I had a half hour of daylight left when it dawned on me that I was driving right through one of the regions where the book had hinted that fossils might be found. And then, just ahead, there was a
roadcut. Why not? I pulled the truck off the pavement, parking in knee-high brambles well off the road. Staying on the public right-ofway, I made my way to a nearby patch of exposed dirt to check it out, looking for – what? Nothing, apparently. There was nothing there but red mud. Still, my “just enough information” said I might be on the right track. Back in the truck then, and a mile or so farther down the road, and there’s another road cut. Another stop. More mud. But that’s it. The light was fading fast. But I had a purpose, and there was yet another roadcut a little ways ahead. So back in the truck and pretty soon there I was, once again perusing the northwest Georgia mud. What was I looking for? Maybe for that – right there! See that little round thing about a quarter inch long? Well, of course you can’t see it, because you’re sitting in your house reading. But I was there, on the ground, and there was something really interesting in the dirt at my feet. I picked it up. And then another one like it, but smaller. And then a bigger one, and then a few more. They were fossils, sure enough. Fossils that I recognized as being of a creature called a crinoid. How old? A couple of hundred million years or more. I’d have to go back to the book and figure that out. I found two more, and then it was dark. I cached my finds, now lovingly wrapped in a scrap of paper towel, in the safety of my shirt pocket. Then I drove on home. On the way, I thought more about how much fun “just enough information” can be. It offers only promise, and it leaves the rest to you. So…next weekend…I’ve got a line on this area up north of here a ways… I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Recovery: Continued from Page 1 would at the beginning of the shutdown (in March 2020),” said Michael Starling, Dunwoody director of Economic Development. “I think we are in a really good spot, with the exception of the hotel industry.” While the hotel occupancy remains far below pre-COVID-19 levels, Discover Dunwoody interim President Steven Schumacher said the numbers are on the rise. “They are nowhere near the numbers that were recorded in February of 2020, where occupancy percentages were in the high 80s and 90s during the weekday, but they are increasing from March of last year, when we were at 4 or 6 percent,” Schumacher said. While there were ebbs and flows that could be attributed to spikes in reported infections, occupancy rates have been slowly rising, with March numbers holding steady at about 30 percent, Schumacher said. “The first Friday in April was one of the best we’ve seen in a year, with occupancy up 1,600 percent over this time last year,” he said. “It’s nowhere near where we want to be, but it’s very encouraging.” Schumacher cited last weekend’s Hot Wheels Convention as an indicator that the hotel industry is beginning a gradual recovery. The event was held at the Crowne Plaza Perimeter at Ravinia on Ashford Dunwoody Road. “The hotel was completely sold out through Sunday,” he said. “It’s great to have people coming back into the city.” Office occupancy also seems to be on the rebound, according to reports from city officials. “While occupancy is still around 15-20 percent right now, we expect that to increase significantly after Labor Day,” Starling said. At a February Dunwoody City
Council meeting, Johann Weber with the Perimeter Connects Program said about 25 percent of Perimeter Center employers surveyed said they had tentative plans to return to the office by the end of April. According to those employers who participated in the survey, most predicted a gradual return to the office, but not until at least late in the second or the beginning of third quarter of the year. The pandemic doesn’t seem to be slowing the influx of new businesses within the city. Five new businesses held ribbon-cutting ceremonies during the first quarter, including The Whole Tooth and Scenthound Grooming on Chamblee Dunwoody Road, Home Instead on Mount Vernon Road, Piccola New York Pizza on Winters Chapel Road and the Consumer Innovation Center on Ashford Lane. Schumacher said that while statistics are important in measuring the recovery, he sees a lot of anecdotal evidence around the Perimeter Center area. “I’m seeing a lot more people in restaurants wearing name badges, which means they are back in the office, and my commute is taking a few minutes more each week — and that’s a good thing,” he said. Mayor L ynn Deutsch said she’s hearing encouraging news from small business owners around Dunwoody. “Commercial centers seem busier, and I see more people out and about,” she said. “But I don’t think this is completely over. We need to continue to eat and shop locally and support Dunwoody businesses.”

family was enjoying the morning, when a mobile phone notification alerted them a person had been detected on their property. The person was in full hunting gear underneath a gazebo and holding a mobile phone. “I kinda just lost it, I couldn’t believe (he) felt the liberty to be on the property without asking,” property owner Dr. Jennifer Peer-Rich said. Her spouse confronted the hunter, who had shot a deer and tracked it to their property using a mobile phone. to an issue with what Peer-Rich called real privacy and safety concerns. Without permission, a hunter could receive a trespassing citation or face severe injury. That is concerning to one local state legislator. “The most pressing safety concern I can think of is if you are dressed in camouflage on somebody’s property, and you have not talked to the property owner and you are carrying a weapon through their yard,” Rep. Josh McLaurin said. “If you get shot by the property owner and killed, I don’t know that the property owner gets arrested. You might be setting up lawful killing in castle doctrine style self-defense just by virtue of appearing on other people’s property.” Bow hunting season opens Sept. 12 and ends Jan. 31, 2022.

OPINION
Dunwoody people, places are special Wow! The Perimeter business community sure is a special place. When we bought the Crier a couple years ago we heard from readers for months afterward telling us how special HANS APPEN the newspaper was Publisher to them and how hans@appenmedia.com excited they were that new owners were coming in to protect and build on the success of their local community newspaper. I learned quickly about the pride the people of Dunwoody take in their community and how important it was for us to continue to tell its stories each week in the latest edition of the Crier. The Crier was and is a strong local newspaper, but like any forward-thinking publishing company is doing these days, we wanted to innovate and bring new and exciting features to the newspaper that would ensure that it stayed that way. One such feature we wanted to add to Crier that we’d had some success with over the years with our Herald newspapers north of the river was an annual contest recognizing the best businesses in the area. We called it “Best of Perimeter” and over the course of two months we gave Perimeter residents the oppor-
tunity to nominate and then vote on the best businesses in the area in over 100 different categories. We also went door to door, making sure that business owners knew about the contest and would have the opportunity to promote the voting window to their customers. I made some of those visits myself and had the pleasure to meet some great people. I talked to Charles at the Dunwoody Nature Center, Debbie at Stage Door Players, Alan over at the Spruill Center for the Arts, Celia at Travelfaire, and Dawn at Camp Run-A-Mutt. I stopped by local eateries, medical offices, retail shops and many more. One central theme throughout my visits was how impressive, kind, and upbeat everyone I met was. Mind you, all of them are still coping with the ravages a pandemic leaves on a business and the often sluggish recovery that follows. But if the quality of the people and business owners I met, and the optimism I was greeted with are any indication, we’re going to be just fine, and 2021 is going to be a great year. So, please take a moment to peruse the list of winners for this year’s Best of Perimeter contest. It is a list of businesses that any community would be proud to call their own. And as always, shop local.

This past year, Malachi’s has seen a 60% increase in people seeking groceries each Wednesday. Our community has rallied and shown generosity with both material and financial donations allowing Malachi’s to meet the rising need. Thank you Dunwoody! Malachi’s Storehouse, a food pantry in Dunwoody, distributes food, baby supplies and clothing every Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. We seek to be both a practical resource as well as a community of compassion and kindness. Everyone is welcome, everyone is valued, and everyone is fed. In our drive-through or outside walk-up distribution, our volunteers work hard to ensure that each family is given a wide variety of healthy food including meat and fresh produce. The food comes from many sources, one of which is community donations collected every Tuesday from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Malachi’s also purchases thousands of pounds of food each week from the Atlanta Community Food Bank at only
$0.16/pound and there are several organizations that glean food from grocery stores to bring to Malachi’s several times a week. Malachi’s Storehouse operates out of St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church at 4755 N. Peachtree Rd, Dunwoody, GA 30338. For more information visit malachisstorehouse.org

of Perimeter 2021! Brought to you by: Village Orthodontics We are humbled and honored that you have chosen Village Orthodontics to be the Best of Perimeter Orthodontist for 2021. When Village Orthodontics opened in 2017, our goal was to create the best orthodontic experience for the residents of the Perimeter area. We strive every day to achieve this goal by providing multiple treatment options, with custom, individualized-care at a great value. Thank you for believing in us and allowing us to continue doing what we love to do each and every day; create incredible smiles for our community. Village Orthodontics uses the latest technology and treatment methods to help deliver the latest and greatest. Dr. Freedman is known for his tech skills throughout the orthodontic field and is a Key Opinion Leader for one of the largest world-wide dental 3d printer companies, is on the Customer Advisory Board of a major Orthodontic Software platform to help guide the trajectory of the development, and serves as an advisor to an Orthodontic Aligner company that is now in all 50 states. In 2021, he was selected to become a member of the Schulman Study Group which is only offered to a select 1% of orthodontic practices in the country. Village Orthodontics even developed its own direct 3d printed aligners, similar to Invisalign, to give patients more options. Village Orthodontics provides free orthodontic consultations, which in-
cludes photos, x-rays (when necessary), a digital impression, and a detailed review of your treatment options with Dr. Freedman. Our digital impressions are different than the old school impressions of the past. These highly accurate impressions take about 3 minutes to acquire the upper and lower teeth and capture the bite. This is all done with the highest patient comfort in mind and without the mess and silly putty style goop. After we give you your treatment options, we will never pressure you into starting that same day and our prices are the same whether you decide to start on your consultation day or wait until a day that works better for you. Together with your help, we will continue to financially support important organizations throughout the Perimeter area including Austin, Vanderlyn, Kingsley, Chesnut, Dunwoody Elementary, Dunwoody Springs Elementary, Peachtree Middle School, Dunwoody and North Springs High School sports, The MJCCA, DUMC, The Davis Academy, OLA, Sandy Springs Youth Sports, numerous local neighborhood swim & tennis clubs and many others to make our community stronger, more united and better for everybody. Go and see a medical professional if you feel pain or stiffness, persistent headaches, numbness or tingling going down your arms or legs, or pain in any other area of your body. Most adults know they should see their primary care doctor each year for a routine physical. Fewer realize that they should also be scheduling annual appointments with their dermatologist. Dermatologists diagnose and treat more than 3,000 different conditions and diseases of the skin, hair and nails. Think about it -- skin is the largest organ and skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. In fact, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, an estimated 20 percent of all Americans will develop skin cancer at some point in their life. Which is why we encourage you to make an appointment with one of our skin care experts. Experienced & Caring Providers. Patients have access to a professional team of physicians, certified physician assistants and nurses who are trained in the medical and surgical sub-specialty of dermatology. Dr. Josh Hammel, a native to Marietta, GA, is a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon. He has extensive knowledge in dermatological research and specialized training in surgical dermatology, including the use of advanced plastic surgery repair techniques. Before gaining her experience in the world of dermatology, certified physician assistant Alexa Deck worked as a medical assistant at the Piedmont Heart Institute and as a physician assistant for a family medical practice in the area. Both providers are compassionate, skilled and eager to help you manage your skin care needs. Comprehensive Dermatology. Patients have access to quality medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology services to help achieve and maintain healthy skin at all ages. MEDICAL: Our skin care experts diagnose and treat chronic conditions, and prescribe medications to common, and sometimes not so common, skin conditions such as acne, eczema, rosacea and psoriasis. SURGICAL: We are committed to offering the most advanced, state-ofthe-art care available. We provide local excisions and Mohs Micrographic surgery, the most effective technique for treating common skin cancers. COSMETIC: Our providers utilize a variety of treatments for aesthetic concerns including cosmetic injectables such as Botox and rejuvenating laser treatments for sun spots and wrinkles.
In-House Dermatopathology Lab. Our centralized dermatopathology laboratory is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and enables our providers accurate and timely biopsy results for their patients. Patient Satisfaction. Providing outstanding patient care means more to us than just practicing good medicine, it involves listening to our patients and continuing to improve so that every experience is a positive one. “This is the most efficient, professional, and friendly dermatology practice I have ever been to. I was immediately checked in and seen by very friendly staff. Dr. Hammel took time to listen to me and we discussed the best plan for my problems. He is amazing and super smart! I had a wonderful experience and would definitely recommend!” – Manjusha D. Quick Access to Care. Calls today and be seen this week. We firmly believe that no one should wait weeks to see a dermatologist. Simply call 770452-5667 or visit mydermspecialists. com to make an appointment.

Best Veterinarian of 2021 Brought to you by: Dunwoody Animal Medical Center
We are honored to be voted the Best Veterinarian of 2021! We are thrilled to have been able to provide superior veterinary care for the Dunwoody and Sandy Springs communities for more than 30 years. Doctors Johnson, Pinsky, Gould and Hamer have over one hundred combined years of experience as veterinarians. Most of our full-time employees have worked for Dunwoody Animal Medical Center for ten years and many have worked for us for more than twenty years. Dunwoody Animal Medical Center provides the highest quality of veterinary medicine for cats and dogs. Dr. Johnson performs many surgeries laparoscopically, allowing for a marked reduction in post-operative pain and a quicker return to function. We use high-end diagnostic equipment including digital radiography, ultrasound, laser therapy and the highest level of in-house diagnostic laboratory analyzers. Dunwoody Animal Medical Center is independently owned and operated. We are not owned by a public corporation, allowing for more flexibility in our practice and more individualized care for our patients. From the beginning of our veterinary hospital, it has been important to us to support our community through our sponsorship of local non-profit organizations and charity events. These include the Dunwoody Fourth of July Parade, Lemonade Days, Dunwoody Nature Center, our local schools and numerous youth & charitable organizations. We are honored to provide the veterinary care to the
K-9 Police Officers of the Dunwoody Police Department. Dunwoody Animal Medical Center is a fully accredited member of the American Animal Hospital Association. Today, only 12%–15% of veterinary practices in the US and Canada hold the “AAHA-accredited” designation. AAHA is the only organization that accredits veterinary practices in the United States and Canada. Practices that choose to pursue accreditation are evaluated on stringent quality
standards that encompass all aspects of veterinary medicine—from pain management and patient care to team training and medical recordkeeping—and are continuously updated to keep accredited practice teams at the forefront of the profession. We look forward to continuing to provide outstanding service to our clients and superior veterinary care to our patients.

In 2008, after the City of Dunwoody acquired the neglected 1870 DonaldsonBannister Farm, aka the Farm, at the corner of Chamblee-Dunwoody and Vermack roads, DPT agreed to rehabilitate and manage it as a public park and private event venue. In 2018, after ten years of rehabilitation accomplished by fundraising, financial support from the City and untold volunteer hours, the Farm officially opened to the public. Since then, it has been a much sought-after private venue for weddings and other significant private
and corporate events. At the Farm, DPT also hosts significant public activities, including Dunwoody’s only children’s history camp in addition to a children’s summer yoga camp, adult history classes, Afternoon Tea, Farm-to-Table Dinner, yoga classes, Apple Cider Days and Spring Fling. DPT also manages three local historic cemeteries. To fund its many activities, DPT produces Dunwoody’s most popular community event - Lemonade Days at Brook Run Park, attended by 80,000 over its five-day run. Usually held in April but canceled in 2020 because of the pandemic, the festival is scheduled this year for Aug. 18-22. Clearly, DPT is more than just a preserver of old buildings. Believing that people are happiest where they feel the greatest connection, DPT is committed to connecting people through activities that preserve the past, celebrate the present and build the future. Varying levels of memberships and corporate sponsorships as well as lifelong friendships are now available. For information, go to https://dunwoodypreservationtrust.org.
To our wonderful patients Brought to you by: Dunwoody Urgent Care Over 15 years ago, I opened Dunwoody Urgent Care. Like my father, who was a general practitioner in Sonoma, CA, I wanted to get back to the basics, emulating and rekindling the ideal of smalltown medicine. My adopted hometown of Dunwoody has embodied that dream, as Dunwoodians have embraced my traditional values. My staff and I listen to our patients, and we truly care for each and every one of you. We want to extend a HUGE thank you to all of our (over 20,000!) Dun-
woody patients, and to the Dunwoody community as a whole, for the amazing support you have shared with us, particularly in the past year. It means everything to us that you voted us the best Urgent Care in Dunwoody, and that you continue to choose us to care for your illnesses and injuries. The outpouring of support and loyalty, both in-person and on social media, has been overwhelming. It is our honor and privilege to have earned your trust! Warmest regards, — Casey Locarnini, M.D. (Dr. Loc) and the staff of Dunwoody Urgent Care

Best Pediatrician of Perimeter in 2021 Brought to you by: Healthy Kids R Us A new pediatric practice in Dunwoody works to serve the large Spanish-speaking population in the area with a staff fluent in Spanish and other languages. BRUTUS-DARIUS Drs. Jessie BrutusDarius and Natalia Benza opened their practice, Healthy Kids R Us, in July with the goal of keeping children healthy, serving the Spanish-speaking population in the area and treating unique and rare cases. The office staff is BENZA fluent in Spanish. Brutus-Darius also speaks French and Creole. Both Brutus-Darius and Benza worked at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta before opening the practice together.
Because of their past experience, Brutus-Darius and Benza say they are knowledgeable and equipped to handle unique cases. Benza said they see patients with autism, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome as well as rare conditions like metabolic disorders. Opening of the office was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, but the staff is excited to now have the practice up and running. “Thankfully, we stayed in close communication with our patients from the previous clinic, so many of them have been very loyal and waiting for us,” Benza said. To ensure the health and safety of the staff and patients, employees have their temperature taken and wear masks in the office. Patients are asked to wait in their car upon arrival, so a member of the staff can come out to take their temperature and have them answer a questionnaire before they enter. Healthy Kids R Us, located at 11 Dunwoody Park, Suite 190, serves children from the newborn stage to 21 years.

Home Helpers of North Atlanta Voted Best of Perimeter Home Care for 2021! Brought to you by: Home Helpers of North Atlanta Home Helpers of North Atlanta is honored to be voted the Best Home Care for Seniors in the inaugural Best of Perimeter awards! Thank you to everyone who voted for us. “Winning in the first Best of Perimeter contest is especially meaningful in these challenging times. For the past four years we have also been honored with the Best Home Care for Seniors award in North Atlanta, and it’s been so rewarding to be trusted by our clients and their families as we partner to help them” say Hilary and Greg Eldridge. “It’s our ability to constantly fine tune and deliver a truly personalized approach that makes the difference between good and great care. Change is constant - with our amazing caregivers and staff we strive to anticipate, recognize and address those changes as part of our ongoing commitment to partner with our families and deliver exceptional Care Management.” In the evolving world of COVID-19, the health care challenges our clients and caregivers face make it important to adapt quickly and help families navigate as their loved ones face their own unique situations. We recognized early on the critical need to obtain Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), deliver extensive infection control training and elevate our Care Management to a level that makes us stand apart. For many of our families, seeing their older loved ones thrive at home is now an alternative they view as a lifesaving decision. If your older loved one is in a care facility,
the one on one dedicated care and warm emotional connection a heart centered Home Helpers caregiver provides can be life changing. Being able to deliver quality Care Management at a rapid pace is a must in today’s world. It’s just not enough to set up a care plan and make a wonderful match of a heart centered caregiver to client. It takes proactive attention to detail by a team that has depth and skill, with Care Managers who form a critical link with our families as needs arise. Proactive Care Management lets us pivot more quickly to address the questions and concerns clients have in real time, working to offer solutions and ideas before issues become critical. Hilary and Greg built this business as a tribute to Hilary’s father and set out nine years ago to raise the bar for in-home care. “I saw what a difference truly personalized care made in my Dad’s life and strive to provide the kind of care he’d be proud to have inspired”, says Hilary. “I always use his memory as a touchstone to make sure that even in the midst of change we engage the spirit of our clients as we honor the richness of their lives.” We’re here to help - from six hours a day, several days a week to 24/7 and live-in care. A Home Helpers caregiver has the skills to assist with all personal care, help around the house, safely speed up recovery from surgery, or provide specialized care for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, etc. For a free consultation please call Home Helpers of North Atlanta at (678) 430-8511.

How Community Improvement Districts Improve the Community Brought to you by Ann Hanlon, Executive Director, Perimeter CID For over 20 years, the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts (PCIDs) has invested private dollars to build projects in Dunwoody, Sandy Springs and Brookhaven. Founded in 1999, the PCIDs has funded over $30 million in improvements in the community to benefit both the private sector and residents. The business district of the PCIDs includes all of the major corporations in the Central Perimeter market, including Cox, UPS, State Farm, IHG, Met Life, Insight Global and VMWare among others. Each of these companies have contributed and continue to help fund transportation projects in the District that benefit everyone – and these projects include landscape maintenance, intersection improvements, sidewalk construction, and larger coordination with the Cities and GDOT for regional projects. Independently or with its partners, PCIDs identifies projects that improve access in and out of the District. The CID works with Cities and GDOT to enhance mobility for all modes of transportation, and to create value for the com-
mercial property owners through trails, landscaping, lighting, safety enhancements and sense of place installations. Recent key projects, such as the midblock crossing for pedestrians at Hammond Drive and the Dunwoody MARTA station, benefit all people who work, live and travel through the Perimeter area.
INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS It’s what we do.
For over 20 years, the PCIDs have invested in mobility projects to create a signature destination for corporate headquarters, hospitality, and retail. www.perimetercid.org
The CID recently partnered with MARTA for a cleanup of the Dunwoody station and hired a mural artist to create an installation on several internal walls of the station. Two intersection projects are currently under construction in Dunwoody and Brookhaven and should be complete by the fall. As a result of
these dedicated improvements, the commercial, multi-family and residential markets benefit as a regional community. The PCIDs has an aggressive capital work plan and will continue working to build projects in the Perimeter market to benefit all. Find out more at www.perimetercid.org
