Synagogue arranges Sunday vaccine appointments By JEFFREY ALBERTSON newsroom@appenmedia.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — A local synagogue is taking on a new initiative to increase the number of vaccinated people by offering a Sunday shot schedule as an alternative to work-day appointments. Hosting a vaccine site is the latest Temple Emanu-El effort to assist communities affected by the pandemic. The open space in the Brill Family social hall, used as a polling site during elections, has sat
empty for some time while services remain online or in small group gatherings. The underutilized space sparked an idea filled with the Jewish tradition of pikuach nefesh, that nothing is more sacred than saving a human life. That idea originated with Temple Emanu-El President and former Dunwoody City Council Member Robert Wittenstein, who contacted the Georgia Department of Public Health, the Fulton County Department of Health and state legislators about opening a vaccination site.
getting the vaccine.” April 20 was training day as the first rounds of shots were administered to congregants and volunteers trained in preparation for the formal opening. Spanish language assistance will be available. Written material will be available in several other languages. The vaccination site offers the Moderna shot, which requires two doses spaced 28 days apart.

Plant sale returns after pandemic delay By JEFFREY ALBERTSON newsroom@appenmedia.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — The Dunwoody Community Garden and Orchard at Brook Run held its annual Spring Plant Sale from April 30 to May 2 at the Brook Run Park greenhouses. DCGO’s harvest yields about 3,000 pounds of leafy green vegetables a year to Malachi’s Storehouse at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Dunwoody. This event and the University of Georgia Extension Master Gardener Talks were cancelled last year due to the pandemic. Master gardeners were on-site for this year, though, imparting advice and assisting customers with purchases. The sale featured heirloom tomatoes, organic vegetables, herbs, houseplants, shrubs, and shade enhancing plants. A gardening book and tool sale were added
Wittenstein almost abandoned his idea until he met congregant Leslie Miller, who works for Worldwide Pandemic Solution. The healthcare firm was seeking new opportunities to help fight the virus that has claimed the lives of more than 17,000 Georgians. “We are trying to make Temple Emanu-El a site where people in the community can be welcomed regardless of what their circumstances are,” Wittenstein said. “We have created an environment where there are really no barriers to

DUNWOODY, Ga. –– The Dunwoody City Council deferred a proposal that would reduce the minimum land area required for a planned development from 5 acres to 1 acre. At its April 26 meeting, the council considered several modifications to the original plan suggested by the Dunwoody Planning Commission that would raise the minimum area for a planned development to 1.5 acres. In addition, the council discussed several modifications that included adapting standards already established in the city’s comprehensive plan. The council concluded that more study would be needed before the measure could be
considered. “We need to better understand the process,” Mayor Lynn Deutsch said in calling for the deferral, which passed unanimously. A memo from Dunwoody Planning and Zoning Manager Paul Leonhardt outlined the specifics of the request, saying that the change “addresses a shortcoming of the Dunwoody Zoning Ordinance.” Under the current ordinance, when a developer asks for a rezoning, the city provides a variety of conditions –– one of which typically requires following an approved site plan, the memo said. “However, due to the length and specificity of the zoning ordinance, most current development

Charter Commission recommendations delayed until 2022 legislative session By CATHY COBBS newsroom@appenmediagroup.com DUNWOODY, Ga. – It will be January before proposals on term limits and election dates brought forth by the Dunwoody Charter Commission last fall will be considered for adoption. The five-member commission held bi-monthly meetings last fall, combing through the city’s bylaws line by line to examine whether changes should be considered. Its recommendations must be passed by the Georgia General Assembly before a local referendum can be scheduled. Dunwoody voters will make the final call on whether to adopt any adjustments to the charter. The Dunwoody City Council voted in March to defer discussion on the proposals, missing the window for any legislative consideration for 2021. Charter Commission Chairman Robert Wittenstein said he is confident that the recommendations would work their way through the Legislature at its next session. Mayor Lynn Deutsch agreed that the measures would be considered sooner, rather than later. The committee’s suggested changes to the charter included modifying the term limit for the mayor from two consecutive terms to three, establishing term limits for council members to three consecutive stints, modifying the terms of election for council members so that a winner could be determined by a plural-
ity of 45 percent, rather than a majority of 50 percent, and shifting the election for mayor by two years to coincide with council district elections, beginning in 2025. The commission also recommended the Georgia Legislature make six changes to the city’s charter, which would not require passage through referendum. Those changes include: Adding the wording “improve water quality” under environmental protection. A provision that would use the Consumer Price Index as a basis for compensation of the mayor and City Council. Removing defined expense allowances for the mayor and council, and replacing it with reimbursement of actual expenditures. Shifting the date of swearing-in of newly elected officials from the first work day of the year to the first regularly scheduled meeting of the year; A provision for the establishment of emergency powers during circumstances affecting the life and health of residents. Moving back, by one month, the schedule for approval of the annual budget. The commission has considered, but did not pass several recommendations, including the removal of the millage rate cap of 3.04 and a provision that the mayor could be elected by a plurality of 45 percent, rather than 50 percent plus one vote.

DeKalb County approves Girl Scout cookie purchase DECATUR, Ga. — DeKalb County Government will buy approximately 20,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies from area troops for its upcoming food distribution and for the Atlanta Community Food Bank. The purchase comes through part of the county’s allocation of federal CARES Act funding. DeKalb County did not provide information about how much it will pay for the cookies, but the boxes generally cost $4 each. That would bring the transaction to around $80,000. “This is not simply about buying Girl Scout cookies,” said DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond. “This is about investing in the future of young girls in DeKalb County. Without the cookie program, many girls from low-income households could not afford to participate in Girl Scouts. Every box sold gives a girl a greater opportunity to lead and succeed.” Due to the pandemic, approximately 720,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies sit unsold in metro-Atlanta warehouses. The sale of these cookies makes up nearly 20 percent of the funding for DeKalb County troops. This funding is used for membership scholarships and various educational, social and civic programs offered to girls and women by Girl Scouts. “I thank DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond and the Board of Com-

missioners for this innovative partnership at a time when it is most needed,” said Amy Dosik, CEO of Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta. DeKalb County has approximately 5,600 Girl Scouts and more than 2,400 volunteers. The cookies were distributed during DeKalb County’s monthly food distribution on Saturday, during which 3,600 families received one 20-pound box of fruit and vegetables and a 10-pound package of chicken hindquarters. The Atlanta Community Food Bank also will distribute cookies during its regular food distribution network. Partners include Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta, Atlanta Community Food Bank, DeKalb County School District, La Vision newspaper, First African Community Development Corp, Big Miller Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Insignia LLC and Saint Philip AME Church. Over the past year, DeKalb County has provided fruit, vegetables, and protein to more than 31,000 DeKalb County families. The county is using federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act funding to purchase the produce, protein and Girl Scout cookies. It’s time again for me to share my reviews of books I’ve read lately. Perhaps you’ll find one or several among them to add to your TBR list. KATHY “The Further AdvenMANOS PENN tures of Sherlock Holmes: The Stalwart Companions” (H. Paul Jeffers) When a reader enjoyed a column I wrote about the Sherlock Holmes books I’d read, he sent me this title. I found it of interest now in our turbulent political times for its historical reference to the contested election that resulted in Rutherford B. Hayes becoming our 19th president. I had no idea. Parts of the book are told in the first person by Teddy Roosevelt as he embarks on an adventure with Sherlock Holmes in New York City. This is a tale of Sherlock Holmes pre-Dr. Watson. It’s a short book, running only 170-something pages for the main story. After the adventure ends, the last section drags a bit. It supplies the historical details that gave birth to the story and make its premise plausible. “Good Sam” (Dete Meserve) Romance is a genre I don’t often

Women taught flight training at Naval Air Station Atlanta During World War II, more than 6 million women worked in factories, 3 million volunteered with the Red Cross, and more than 200,000 served in the military. Women’s auxiliary branches were established, including the Women Air Service Pilots, Women’s Army Corps, and Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service. Women VALERIE worked in Washington D.C., as BIGGERSTAFF codebreakers. I recently discovered the work women did at Naval Air Station Atlanta. An Atlanta Constitution article published in September 1942 announced the first Link flight trainer school with women instructors at Naval Air Station Atlanta. The women would be teaching navy pilots blind flying using the Link trainer machine. The World War II base was located on the same land which was home to Camp Gordon during World War I and today is DeKalb Peachtree Airport in Chamblee. The Link trainer machine was invented by Ed Link in 1928, a barnstorming flyer from New York State. His invention was a miniature plane with a cockpit and all the controls of a full-sized plane. The conditions of flight were simulated to allow pilot trainees to learn how to fly with no visibility using instruments only. The training was known as “blind flying.” (The Spokesman Review; Spokane, Washington, April 14, 1941, “Pilot Training Gadget Marvel”)
Several of the first women to arrive at the base and prepare to become flight instructors were from Atlanta, but they also came from other cities in Georgia, as well as Alabama, New York, Minnesota and Texas. The women ranged in age from 19 to 40. Jean Flynt, a recent graduate of Agnes Scott College, was one of those women. Paula Lind, who supervised the women, was a qualified flight instructor with 275 hours of flying time before World War II. She took her first course in Link training in 1934 and was considered an expert on the Link trainer by 1942. Naval Air Station Atlanta had a row of Link trainers set up at the base. The reported cost of each machine varies between $10,000 and $20,000. By 1943, other naval air bases were building barracks and preparing for women Link trainers. Bases in Lakehurst, New Jersey, Norman, Oklahoma, and Memphis, Tennessee, purchased Link trainers and brought in women to train their pilots. World War II veteran 2nd Lt. Joseph Armstead Diblin completed Link training at Naval Air Station Atlanta. He wrote about his experience in an article, “Link Trainers helped World War II pilots with instrument flying,” published in the Oct. 20, 2019 issue of The Daily Item in Sunbury, Pennsylvania. Diblin praised the use of Link training. “The Link operator on the outside could create engine and instrument malfunctioning for the sweating pilot under the hood,” he wrote. “In my opinion, it was an excellent training device. After World War II, Naval Air Station Atlanta continued to be used as home to the Weekend Warriors who organized and trained Naval and Marine Air Reservists. Take a wildflower watching walk Springtime means fishing time, and you’ll find me on the water as often as I can get there. Usually, spring fishing is good. But some days they just aren’t biting. That’s how it was STEVE HUDSON the other day. I was Get Outside Georgia, fishing for bass in aa4bw@comcast.net Little River, a tributary to Allatoona Lake, but the fish were having none of it. So I’d admitted defeat and had decided, instead, to simply enjoy an afternoon of hiking. The trail was level for a while, but then it took me up a steep slope. At the top I stopped for a moment to catch my breath. And that’s when I saw them: a half dozen splashes of bright purple just inches from my feet. It was a little patch of wildflowers – and it was a reminder that wildflower season is here again.
Not being a flower expert, I had no idea what I was seeing. So I pulled the trusty phone out of my day pack and snapped a few pictures. Then, as I often do when hiking, I sent one of the photos to my daughter. She’s a plant person, and I figured if anyone could identify what I’d found, then she could. Pretty soon, the phone dinged to alert me to an incoming text – and sure enough, she had identified the flowers as “dwarf crested iris.” Now I have no idea whether the dwarf crested iris is particularly unusual or otherwise noteworthy, but I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that it’s a spectacular flower. And I had found it! Like discovering a new secret fishing spot, spotting new wildflowers turns out to be a heady thing. It just might be as addictive as fishing. On that day, what else did I find? Well, there were bright yellow “creeping buttercups.” There were some purple ones called the “common vetch.” One I especially liked had fringed white petals

and a bright yellow center – I believe it’s called “prairie fleabane.” Now lest you be impressed by my farranging knowledge of things botanical, let me confess that I had help from technology. It turns out that there are various apps for your phone that’ll help you identify wildflowers. Search for “Georgia wildflowers identification” or even just “wildflower ID,” and you’ll find a bunch of them. For some, in fact, all you have to do is upload a photo. That’s kind of neat. In fact, it occurs to me that an interactive wildflower ID app might be a good way to pique young folks’ interest in the out-of-doors. I’ve learned long ago that where kids are concerned, it’s hard for the outdoor world to complete with the strong, strong lure of technology. But a wildflower ID app challenges kids to put that phone to work in the field – and you might be surprised how that plays out. There are also more traditional guides to wildflowers, too, and (even with the power of technology tucked away in my daypack) I want a traditional Georgia

Buying a Home in the Crazy Busy Market I wanted to share some tips on how to get your offer accepted....or at least a better change of being accepted. As you know most homes being sold have at least 5-10 offers on them within 24 hours of being listed for sale. This creates GRIFFIN an insanely competitive market for buyers (great news for sellers!). Here are a few things you can do: Use a local, well known, and trusted lender. Big banks are notorious for pumping out pre-approvals online without so much as talking to the client. Listing agents are aware and will shy away from generic big bank pre-approvals. Make sure your lender is responsive and available regardless of who they work for. If they cannot answer questions on the weekend....ditch them. You look at homes on the weekend you need help on the weekend. Returning emails and calls
promptly is important. Listing agents are calling lenders for a warm and fuzzy up front. If your lender does not return the call promptly it will not bode well for your offer. Have your lender underwrite your file BEFORE you find a house. This makes your offer stronger than a “pre-approval”. The listing agent will know your loan is good to go and there will not be any hiccups. This takes longer but is well worth it. You can send over an “approval” letter vs a “pre-approval” letter. If there are 10 offers on the table and you are the only one already approved your odds go WAY up. Shorten appraisal and finance contingencies. Last year 21 days was “normal”. Today 10 to 12 days is pushing it! Ask you lender if they can expedite and keep these to a minimum. A local lender is key (I am biased of course). If the listing agent has seen the name or recognizes the loan officer, it makes a HUGE difference. Good luck house hunting!
Seller Beware – Why Expert Advice is Important Even in a Seller’s Market Brought to you by Ansley Atlanta You’ve more than likely heard a few by now - the stories of homes selling within hours of hitting the market if they make it to the market at all. Or the bidding wars that LIPPERT stack up offers in the double and even triple digits, where buyers are waiving even the most provident of contract contingencies and forking out tens of thousands of dollars over list price to win a contract on a home. The shortage of homes for sale in metro Atlanta predates the pandemic, and sellers are reaping the benefits in cozy terms and windfall sale prices. But even in a seller’s market, don’t assume that record-breaking results are a given, or that it doesn’t take some finesse. Read on to learn how expert agents are helping their sellers make the most of the market. Making the Effort While more and more homes are selling in record-breaking time and for thousands above list price, getting the best price still takes considerable work. Even in a seller’s market, carefully planned and executed marketing and skilled negotiation are paramount. While it’s true that the slightest indication you may be up for selling can sometimes be enough to drive hordes of buyers to your front lawn, don’t expect that to necessarily result in the highest sale price, or even a closing. Contract drop-out rates are especially high in these market conditions because buyers are having to act quickly without the luxury of time to think things through. Experienced
agents are working the phones constantly, carefully reviewing each offer with intense scrutiny, and advising their sellers carefully on how to choose between sometimes dozens of nearly identical offers. And even once an offer is accepted, the best agents will continue marketing the property to seek backup contracts, an important negotiation strategy that many sellers aren’t aware is an option. Getting the Best Offers Assuming you’ve taken the advice of an expert agent to prepare and properly market your property to buyers, you may well end up with the happy conundrum of deciding which offer to negotiate or accept. But not all offers are created equal, and even though the current demand for homes is driving bids higher and higher, don’t assume that a higher price equals a better offer. And as mentioned above, with a higher-than-normal contract fallout rate, the best agents will work diligently to continue generating offers, and ideally a backup contract. The current market conditions are indisputably the best we’ve seen for sellers in recent history. But as fatigued buyers get more and more decided on what they want for the higher prices they’re paying, it’s imperative to seek the expert advice of an experienced agent to help you get the absolute best results. Ansley Real Estate agents have the skill and knowledge to help you strategically navigate any market with careful preparation, precision marketing, and expert negotiation. Make sure you’re well-represented, and well-advised. Cynthia Lippert Managing Broker – Ansley Real Estate | North Atlanta Office 770.284.9900

This Dominant Kitchen Cabinet Trend Brought to you by Remodeling Expo Center When you go shopping for kitchen cabinets there literally are hundreds of door styles and colors to choose from, but the plain truth is that over 90% of all cabinets sold are shaker style and the majority of them are white. White cabinets are the dominant cabinet trend and its been this way for a decade now. Why is this? Stay with me, here. While other cabinet fads come and go, white is a beloved classic for a reason. It’s versatile, it lets the beauty of your millwork show through (whether traditional, shakerinspired, or minimalist and modern), and it’s incredibly easy to live with for years to come. A quick swap of hardware or a new backsplash, and boom— your kitchen looks brand new again. “Like a black dress for a lady or a white button down shirt for a man; white cabinets are an incredibly versatile basis and can be “accessorized” with additional elements like flooring, counters, backsplash, to take on dramatically different looks, from traditional to minimalist to modern”, says John Hogan owner of Remodeling Expo Center. “Our designers create white cabinet kitchens with such different personalities. It’s amazing!” Some of the most popular and
beautiful accessory elements being installed today are: a bright marbleized or veined countertop of quartz or quartzite, complementing perimeter cabinets with a different color island – a striking navy blue or a soft dove gray, expressing your personality with a bold colored backsplash in a interesting herringbone pattern, using expressive cabinet hardware – matte black for drama or satin nickel for sophistication, extending the cabinets to the ceiling to enlarge the room and achieve a grand appearance, incorporating some glass doors on the cabinets to display collectables and fine wine glasses, or using interesting angles in the hood above the cooktop and staggering cabinet heights to create interest for the eye. Kitchen expert John Hogan concludes “If you think shaker or white cabinets are boring, then you just haven’t engaged the right designer yet! It takes careful thought of all the elements in a kitchen to create a million dollar look”. Any realtor will tell you, beautifully designed kitchens with white cabinets, make it easy to sell a home. To learn more, contact John Hogan at The Remodeling Expo Center at 404 910-3969, visit our website, www.RemodelingExpo.com or come into our Design Center at 48 King Street, Roswell, GA 30075.

Selecting the right area rug size, is easy… Brought to you by – Riccardo Apreda, Tuscany Fine Furnishings When I am working with clients, whether they are building a new house or renovating an old one, I like to make sure that house has a nice flow. One of the best ways to achieve that is uniformity in the flooring, that is why I always suggest hardwood floors throughout the house, including the bedrooms. The hardwood allows you to select area rugs which enhance and are sure to warm up the room, while defining the furniture placement. Just as colors and patterns are key to ensure that all the elements in the room work well together, size is equally important. You will want to make sure that the rug is to scale not only with the furniture but also for the room is going to be in. Rugs are essential elements for living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms. Here are some simple guidelines in selecting the appropriate size area rug. The sizes that I recommend for living rooms are 8’ x 11’ or 9’ x 13’. Depending on the placement of the furniture the rug can run either parallel or perpendicular from the fire place. You want to make sure to leave a border of about 8” between the rug and the hearth of the fireplace. Sofas should be placed about a foot over the rug or completely off it. Chairs should be placed
about 8” on the rug or completely off it. Dining room rugs usually measure 9’ x 12’ this is the best size for a table that sits 8. The rule is very simple. You want to make sure that table and chairs remain on the rug even when guests are sitting to avoid the back of the chairs catching the edge of the rug. Buffets and sideboard should never be on the rug. When selecting a bedroom rug keep this easy rule in mind, a king size bed requires a 9’ x 12’ rug and a queen size bed requires an 8’ x 10’ rug. The rug needs to be 2/3 of the way under the bed from the footboard. If the room is narrow and long you can use a 6’ x 9’ rug in front of the bed to fill and warm the void. Whether you prefer oriental, traditional or contemporary rugs, favor bright or subtle colors, enjoy textures and patterns, know that rugs are the key element to make every room complete. Hudson:
OPINION
Continued from Page 9 of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, the trails of Birmingham Park in Milton, and the trails at Kennesaw Mountain. Many parks and nature centers host guided wildflower walks, too, so there’s yet another possibility for you to enjoy. But remember that wildflowers, being wild, can be anywhere. You can even look in your own back yard. Ours seems to be a sanctuary for wild violets. While I know they’re considered to be weeds, they sure are pretty to look at. Besides, if I am admiring them, I don’t have to worry about pulling them. That’s another plus to the wildflower watching game! The next few weeks should be great ones for spotting these hidden gems of color. Keep your eyes open as you hike this spring. It’s a great deal of fun, and there’s no telling what you might see. There are many great wildflower viewing opportunities to be found close to home in the units of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, and Steve Hudson’s book HIKING THE HOOCH will give you detailed info on the many hiking trails awaiting you there. It’s available from Amazon, and signed copies are available from the author at flykits.net.
