City reduces minimum land area required for planned developments By CATHY COBBS newsroom@appenmedia.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — The Dunwoody City Council passed a text amendment May 10 to reduce the minimum land area required for a planned development. The measure includes some modifications discussed at its previous sessions. The text amendment calls for a minimum contiguous land area of 200,000 square feet – or 4.5 acres – if all or part of the land is in a suburban neighborhood or Institutional/Campus character area, such as a college campus. In all other areas, the planned development must have a minimum contiguous land area of 1.5 acres, according to the revised ordinance. The Planned Development designation in zoning provides flexibility, unity and diversity in land planning and development in order to create convenient and harmonious uses, structures and common facilities. Dunwoody Planning and Zoning Manager Paul Leonhardt said the update mirrors requirements for planned developments imposed by neighboring cities and counties. The measure also reflected several conditions recommended by the Dunwoody Planning Commission, including one that the commission could defer the matter up to three times. On the fourth deferral, the matter would be moved forward to the City Council without recommendation. In other action at the May 10 meet-
ing, the council hosted the presentation of a lifesaving award to the family of Dunwoody resident Kim McGrady by the South Walton Fire Department. McGrady died in March after saving several swimmers from a riptide at a Florida beach on April 8. The council also honored McGrady’s son, Colton, and another man, Preston Lyn, who assisted in rescuing the swimmers. McGrady, who worked at Chick-fil-A as a field operations manager, is survived by his wife, Leigh Anne, and two children. A Go Fund Me page has been set up in his honor and has collected more than $142,000. The council also listened to a presentation by Dunwoody Community Development Director Richard McLeod regarding the possible implementation of impact fees to pay for infrastructure improvements. He said the funds collected can only be used for capital investments under seven eligible categories – water, wastewater, roads, stormwater, parks and open spaces, public safety, and libraries. Impact fees would be levied on new construction of singlefamily dwellings, office and retail establishments. Next steps, according to McLeod, would involve commissioning a study. The council did not take any action on the presentation, pending discussion of how other municipalities collect and spend their impact fees.

Festival organizers estimate that more than 30,000 people attended the May 8-9 Dunwoody Arts Festival at Brook Run Park.
Annual Arts Festival officials happy with event attendance By CATHY COBBS newsroom@appenmedia.com DUNWOODY, Ga. – Dunwoody Arts Festival organizers say they are happy with the attendance at last weekend’s event, which was held at Brook Run Park. “It was dreamlike,” said Splash Festival President Frances Schube. “To see the crowds, the beautiful weather and the beautiful park, I couldn’t have
asked for anything better.” Schube said organizers estimated that about 30,000 people attended the two-day event, which featured about 175 vendors from all over the Southeast. She also said Brook Run Park served as the perfect “socially distant” venue. The festival had, in previous years, been held in Dunwoody Village. “Everyone was able to move

THE INK PENN
OPINION
What does your dog say? When Mum read a story in the WSJ titled “What’s Fido thinking? Put down the phone already,” she shared it with me. It was about pet psychics who communicate with all kinds of animals, not just dogs. Of course, it KATHY was no surprise to me MANOS PENN that we dogs communicate with our people, but I was surprised to hear that guinea pigs, horses, chickens and pigs do too.
Because the dog in Mum’s books talks to her pet parent, Mum was especially intrigued. The difference is that Dickens the dog barks or quietly whines his messages, but in this article, one pet communicator says “she drinks in telepathic images that reveal animals’ inner thoughts, be they profound or mundane.” It might be quieter in the Cotswolds cottage where Mum’s character lives if Dickens could do that instead of barking. In Mum’s books, her character, Leta Petkas Parker, can “talk to the animals,” a la Dr. Dolittle, but she learned at an early

age to keep her ability secret. That’s why Mum especially liked this description of one of the pet communicators: “…she began hearing animals as a child. She stopped admitting it in her teens. Her parents died when she was in her late 20s, and, overwhelmed by the prospect of three deaths in short succession, she turned to an animal communicator to talk to her terminally ill dog. She immediately recognized that same ability in herself. ‘I’ve heard them in a way that doesn’t involve the ears,’ she says. ‘I’ve heard them in the heart.’” You may be wondering how exactly I communicate with my Mum. Sometimes I bark. Well, truth be told, Mum says I do that more than necessary. And sometimes I lie quietly thinking deep thoughts like “I wonder where my treats are,” or “I wish Dad would rub my belly.” Mum and Dad aren’t always as quick on the uptake as I’d like, but they get there eventually. Of course, their inability to get the message has nothing to do with my communication skills. It’s more about their inattention. They’re too busy looking at their phones or tablets or the TV. I hear that humans multitask, but I guess my pet parents aren’t
very good at it. Why else would they fail to pick up on the messages I send? I think Mum hears me even when she doesn’t realize it because my thoughts so often wind up in her books as dialogue for Dickens. It’s amazing how much alike we boys are. I guess that means I’m planting ideas in Mum’s subconscious. After all, I am pretty darned talented. I noticed an interesting omission in the article. There’s no mention of the animal communicators listening to cats. Does that mean cats have nothing to say? It seems to me that my feline sister Puddin’ has plenty to say in our household, and there’s no doubt Mum and Dad understand her. How do I know that? They rush to obey her every command. They feed her when she runs meowing to the kitchen, and she gets treats when she leaps on Mum’s desk and meows—over and over again. She’s pretty much in charge around here. I wonder if cats are just too uppity to bother with pet communicators. Too snooty to take the time to transmit images? I asked Puddin’ but she gave me the evil eye and strutted to my dog bed instead of answering me. See what I mean about ruling the roost? Schube said she knew of several artists and vendors who sold out of items on the first day and shuttled more product from warehouses in anticipation of more buyers on Sunday. Billy Staubach, from Indian Springs, Ala., said he was glad to be back in public after the pandemic shut down virtually all similar events in 2020. Nurturing self-confidence in Middle School Brought to you by – Atlanta Academy Today, families have an overwhelming variety of educational options for their children. Schools vary based on academic priorities and emphasis on social-emotional development. The education system is notorious for its ever-changing recommendations, but we believe our commitment to a Kindergarten-8th grade (K-8) model will continue to stand the test of time. Through the years, research has shown the benefits of the K-8 model. We believe students are more confident when they can gradually adjust to middle school, build positive teacher-student relationships, and feel an overall sense of belonging. We have found that middle-school-age students learn and behave better when they remain in a familiar environment for nine years and have opportunities to serve as leaders and role models for younger students.
In the discovery process, we also uncovered that when 4th and 5thgrade students are intentionally taught to manage themselves through executive functioning techniques like self-advocacy, organization, and study skills, the transition to middle school is more manageable. To help these students gain a solid foundation before middle school, we developed the “Mini-Middle” program at Atlanta Academy to help them prepare. In middle school, academic and social settings begin to change. Providing a challenging academic program is easy but developing students’ selfesteem and attitude is more demanding. For that reason, our formula combines academics with every aspect of a child’s adolescent growth and development. Ultimately, our success record speaks for itself. More than 94% of our eighth-grade graduates are accepted to their top choice, including
prestigious private and public high schools. Many of our students are placed in Advanced Placement and accelerated classes in their new high schools. At Atlanta Academy, our mission of giving every student individual attention allows us to combine
specific academic and developmental needs with age-appropriate social and emotional support, which are especially beneficial during the significant middle school years. For more information, please call 678.461.6102 or visit atlantaacademy.com.

OPINION
Carolyn Thompson, WWII Link Training Instructor After writing about the women who were Link Training Instructors at Naval Air Station Atlanta two weeks ago, I heard from the daughter of one of those women. Linda Miller contacted me to share the story of her mother, Carolyn Thompson. Carolyn Thompson grew up on a farm in Conyers, Rockdale County, during the Great Depression. She VALERIE dreamed of flying airplanes. Since BIGGERSTAFF that was not likely at the time, she also wanted to become a flight attendant. However, flight attendants were required to be nurses during the 1930s. Becoming a Link Instructor helped Thompson achieve her dream of working in aviation. Miller recalls that her mother said being a Link instructor was one of the best jobs she ever had. Among the memorabilia Miller has from her mother’s time as a Link Instructor, is an announcement in the Rockdale Citizen newspaper. The newspaper piece reads, “Miss Carolyn Thompson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Thompson, is a member of the first girl’s class in the nation graduating in Link Training, and she is now serving as a ground instructor at the Naval Air Base Chamblee, Ga., training boys in the first step of aviation.” Linda has her mother’s United States Navy Certificate of Completion for Link Instrument Training School. The 1944 Tattoo magazine in her collection is full of photos
and stories that show what life was like at Naval Air Station Atlanta. Five different training programs were located at the base, including the Link Instrument Training Instructors School. The first Link Training women, like Carolyn Thompson, were part of the Civil Service. In early 1943, 500 WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) were brought to Atlanta, first training downtown and staying at the Biltmore Hotel while barracks were built to house them. (Atlanta Constitution, January 31, 1943, “WAVES Begin Trainer School Tomorrow with Class of 500”) As the WAVES received training, many were sent to other Naval Air Stations across the U.S. The Civil Service Link Instructors trained the WAVES and continued to work and train at Naval Air Station Atlanta. The women Link trainers, nicknamed “Ladies of the Link,” woke up at 6 a.m., dressed in their blue slack suits with Navy insignia and arrived at the base at 7:15 a.m. to punch in. Link Trainer Peggy Dutton spoke of the women’s concerns about not being taken seriously by men at the base. “Of course, there are always a few who can’t believe we are serious. But with perseverance, we win them over.” (Atlanta Constitution, February 2, 1944, “Atlanta’s Ladies of the Link Take Their Job Seriously”) On January 3, 1945, Carolyn Thompson married her high school sweetheart, Dean Miller. They lived in East Point near Delta Airlines, where he worked before and after he served during World War II. The hangar that is now home to the Delta Flight Museum was his workplace.

Linda Miller moved to Dunwoody in December 1999, discovering later that she was just five miles from the former Naval Air Station Atlanta, which is now home to DeKalb Peachtree Airport. Carolyn Thompson’s granddaughter later earned her private pilot’s license at the age of 17 and earned a degree in Aviation Management at Auburn University. Thompson was proud of her granddaughter, who achieved goals that were unreachable when Thompson was a young woman. A critique on a useless cleaning device In this rendition of “Consumer Advice You Didn’t Request,” I will outline why the Swiffer mop/Wet Jet is perhaps the most useless cleaning device on the market today. Yes, I have previously been awarded for investigative journalism, and I’m coming at you with more hard-hitting stories today. My wife and I recently listed our home
for sale, which involves mopping the floors approximately every 17 minutes. During this process I have found that the Swiffer Wet Jet is only a good product if you are looking to change the location of dirt and dust from one section of floor to another while simultaneously making your floors extremely wet. And don’t bother avoiding walking

through a room because you’ve “mopped” with a Swiffer. In fact, absolutely walk over them, because rubbing a wet foot across your hardwood, vinyl or tile floors after they have been “Swiffer-ed” is JOE PARKER actually more effective at Editor joe@appenmedia.com cleaning your floors than using the Wet Jet. That’s because dirt and grime will actually stick to a wet foot, whereas a Swiffer pad just likes to take it for a quick ride from, say, under the kitchen table to a more prominent place, like the middle of your living room. The tagline of “Stop cleaning, start Swiffering” even implies that by using a Swiffer, you are, in fact, not cleaning. Hey, at least they’re honest. And it’s not even particularly easy to use. Just slap on a pad, press a button to spray some floral-scented mop juice and have at it sounds easy enough, but there’s more to it than that. I am a man of average height, but when using a Swiffer, I have to adopt a position that could also be used to tie someone else’s shoes. Showing plumber’s crack is guaranteed. Using any bit of elbow grease while Swiffering, which we have already es-
tablished makes no difference, causes the mop’s pole to bend. My model now looks more like a fishhook than a cleaning device. And sure, a conventional mop gets grimy, greasy a generally nasty after being used, but that also shows that grime, grease and schmutz was actually transferred from the floor to the mop head, whereas a Swiffer pad seemingly just has a chemical that makes the pad change colors to imply it actually did something other than relocate dirt. But that’s not how things are portrayed on Swiffer commercials. No, Swiffer ads show their product erasing the most colorful of messes by people that seem to really, seriously, enjoy mopping. These ads could be the modernday equivalent to the “This is your brain on drugs” commercials. Do you dance around, smiling giddily and show hardcore satisfaction from mopping despite the fact you aren’t actually cleaning anything? This is your brain on drugs. And can I have some? Because any drug that makes cleaning you floors a joy should absolutely be legal and readily available. That’s especially true when I’m attempting to “mop” approximately 56 times a day and could use a nice pick-me-up.

Keep an eye on the water! I was walking a section of the Big Creek Greenway the other day when I spied a previously unnoticed side trail heading toward the creek. Always on the lookout for ways to access possible fishing spots, STEVE HUDSON I followed the trail to Get Outside Georgia, see where it went. aa4bw@comcast.net It took me to the creek, sure enough – but what I spotted, as I eased up on the water, was not fish but rather a group of river otters! I love to watch otters in the wild. They move as if flowing with the water itself, gliding as if totally free of gravity. It’s a treat to see them, and so I stood as still as I could and watched for quite a while. It was neat! But it’s nothing like seeing a manatee. There are no manatees in Big Creek, of course. They’re giant creatures of the coast, where they move slowly along in the shallows, dining on grasses and other vegetation. A manatee can be 8 feet long (or bigger!) and since they like to hang out just below the surface, they’re not hard to spot if they’re present. I’ve seen manatees several times over the years, but I remember one manatee encounter in particular. I was fly fishing for sea trout, and I’d been working my way through the mangroves to get to some wadable water. When I finally stepped out of the mangrove tangle and into the shallow water of the bay, what should I see not ten feet to my right but an enormous manatee just soaking up the sun! I just stood there, as quiet as I could be, and watched for a while. Eventually
it stirred, seemed to stretch, and then ever so slowly moved off and disappeared into deeper water. It was an encounter I’ll never forget. If you head down to the coast, and especially if you go out in a boat, keep an eye out for manatees this spring and summer. The massive creatures migrate from Florida into Georgia waters in the spring, drawn by the seasonal proliferation of marsh grass and other vegetation on which they feed. They’ll be here into November, when cooler weather prompts them to return to warmer waters farther south. When manatees are present, boaters should be especially careful to watch out for them and give them plenty of room. Manatees can be hard to spot, especially near the edges of marshes and/or if the water’s a bit murky. According to the Department of Natural Resources, boat strikes are a major cause of manatee injuries and deaths. In fact, estimates are that boat collisions were the cause of about 30 percent of documented manatee mortalities since 2000. How can you reduce the risks of hitting a manatee with your boat? First, and even before you start your motor, check your surroundings for manatees. They seem to like to hang out near docks, where they come to dine on the algae that grows on those structures. Once you’re underway, go slowly and watch the water. Polarized glasses will help you spot manatees underwater, allowing you to avoid them. Stick to deeper channels, too, and try to avoid the shallower waters where a manatee encounter is more likely. And keep your eyes open for things like swirls on the surface – often a telltale sign that there’s a manatee nearby. One more thing: never feed manatees

or give them fresh water. “This could teach the animals to approach docks, putting them at greater risk of a boat strike,” DNR reminds boaters. “And never pursue, harass or play with manatees. It can be harmful to manatees and it’s illegal.” Should you do anything special if you see a manatee? “If you see or photograph a healthy, injured or dead manatee, call DNR at (800) 2-SAVE-ME (800-272-8363),” advises the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. “Note the date, time, location and number of manatees seen, plus the coordinates, if possible.” Occasionally, despite our best efforts, boat/manatee collisions do occur. Should that happen, advises DNR, you should “stand-by and immediately contact the DNR at 800-2-SAVE-ME (800272-8363). This provides biologists the best chance to help these animals and gather data useful in conserving them. Boaters will not be charged if operating their boat responsibly and the collision
was an accident.” So keep your eyes open as you enjoy the coast this spring and summer. If you’re lucky, you just might be rewarded with one of the most memorable wildlife encounters you’ll ever have – seeing a Solution manatee in the wild.
