Dunwoody announces limited reopening of facilities By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — The City of Dunwoody began a limited and phased reopening of city parks and Dunwoody City Hall beginning May 18. Tennis courts, park restrooms that do not service a playground and athletic fields opened May 18, although the city asks park patrons not to engage in team sports of organized play. Indoor facilities will set their own reopening plans with approved COVID-19 safety protocols in place, as defined by the state. “I’ve been encouraged to see neighbors showing respect to one another in

our parks and sharing the space carefully,” Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch said. “Though we will begin offering more options next week, the virus remains contagious. We need to continue to take care of ourselves and others.” The Dunwoody Parks and Recreation Department is working with surrounding municipalities to develop a coordinated approach to reopening. If the initial phase goes smoothly, the skate park, dog park and playgrounds will reopen in the coming weeks. The current target date for the next phase is June 1. According to the Centers for Disease Control, visiting parks and trails is generally safe, so long as one follows basic

precautions, and can even be beneficial to one’s physical and mental health. Parks allow individuals and families to get exercise, relieve stress, enjoy fresh air and take in vitamin D. The CDC asks the public to stick to parks that are close to their home, stay at least 6 feet away from others while enjoying the greenspace, wash hands often and cover coughs and sneezes. Playgrounds, organized activities and crowded parks should still be avoided. Do not visit parks if you are sick or were recently exposed to COVID-19. Dunwoody City Hall also began a limited reopening May 18, but almost all questions and government service

requests can still be handled online, over the phone or through email to avoid an in-person visit. A comprehensive list of services and contact information is available at dunwoodyga.gov/COVID19. City Hall doors will be open from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, but it is strongly encouraged that citizens email or call ahead to see if staff will be onsite to handle their particular issue. Police Service Representatives are available at all hours at City Hall for emergency issues. Dunwoody Municipal Court remains closed. For payments and paperwork that cannot be done online, a clerk will be available each day from 8 a.m. to noon.

High Street development delayed By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — The $2 billion High Street development long-planned for the 42-acres across the street from the Dunwoody MARTA station has received a second extension to negotiate tax breaks. At its May 14 meeting, the Dunwoody Development Authority approved a 60-day extension of the negotiating period. The developer, GID Development Group, and the development authority now have until the end of July to reach a deal. Last year, the authority gave initial approval for a $19 million tax abatement

Local mother-daughter team delivers meals for homeless By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — In the middle of a global crisis, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, but one Dunwoody family is showing how small acts of kindness can still make a difference. Lisa Hiles, a 30-year resident of Dunwoody, said she has always tried to give back, going on several mission trips, but she felt particularly called to action in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. “My daughter is home from college, and I wanted to find a project that she and I could do together,” Hiles said. “I was praying about it, trying to figure out what to do.” Every week, the Catholic Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Atlanta distributes sandwiches to the downtown homeless population and others in need. Hiles first heard about the program through a friend who had donated. “I was listening to mass online, and the priest said, ‘We still need sandwiches to feed the homeless,’” she said. “That was my call.” Lisa reached out to her neighbors in the Brook Farm subdivision, while her daughter, Marianna, reached out to her friends. Several families made and dropped off as

over 10 years. High Street plans predate the incorporation of the City of Dunwoody in 2008. Designs include 400,000 square feet of retail and dining, 635,000 square feet of Class A office space, a 400-room hotel and 3,000 residences. The development fits into a metro-

many sandwiches as they could. “We just said ‘We’re going to take sandwiches down. If anybody wants to make them, just bring them to our house. We’ll load them up and drive them down,’” Lisa said. Though Atlanta’s homelessness population has nearly cut in half over the last decade, there are still about 3,000 people who lack a home, 700 of whom are unsheltered, according to the latest point-in-time count. The mother-daughter team has delivered sandwiches downtown for five weeks now, averaging nearly 400 a week. For their most recent delivery, they had 580 sandwiches, and the coolers barely fit in the car, she said. “It’s been very encouraging that people want to give back and to try to help those who are in need,” Lisa said. “People ask me how long I’m going to do it, and I say I have no idea. I’m going to pray about it and see what happens one day at a time.” She said she is not in a hurry to stop because she wants to encourage people to join her in giving back. The Hiles’ actions have already had a ripple effect on their friends and neighbors. Lisa said she is especially proud to see families with young children teaching their kids the importance of service.

The first phase of the project, on the northern end of the site, will include 600 apartments and a mix of office and retail space. Construction fencing went up earlier this year, but it remains to be seen how the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic impact will change the timeline of the development. “It’s very gratifying and very touching to know we’ve done just a little part to help,” Lisa said. “I’m sure other people are doing more important things than this, but it’s one small thing. I’m just happy that people are encouraged by working together and able to feel good by helping those who are less fortunate.”

Development Authority approved an agreement with Branch Properties for Perimeter Marketplace, a groceryanchored project on Ashford-Dunwoody Road between Meadow Lane and Ashwood Parkway. The $45 million bond issuance comes with a tax abatement estimated to be worth $2.3 million. The deal includes conditions: that the development be open by 2023 and create 225 jobs by year two, and 325 jobs in years three through 10.

OPINION

The age wave and life transitions Financial planning is about your future. The “money aspect” focuses on the question, “Will you have sufficient funds to secure and sustain the future you envision?” life planLEWIS J. WALKER, CFP Financial ning embraces the greater complexity of life and relationships, recognizing that finances are only part of a life-centered, holistic and integrated solution encompassing multiple issues. Consider your “life transitions timelines.” On paper place a dot with your age, and then extend a line connecting another dot representing your age in 10 years. Extend a second line with another dot representing your age 10 years beyond that, 20 years from now. Do the same for loved ones, everyone who depends on you. That may include spouse, children, parents, grandparents, even key employees or partners in a closely held business where business continuity and succession is involved. It’s a startling question. How old will you be in 10 short years? Ten short years beyond that? What challenges are you and those you care for likely to confront? Suddenly you see the future and how quickly time passes. A life transition is a significant challenge — positive or negative, planned or unplanned. The most jarring are those that hit like a bolt out of the blue. Psychotherapist Richard Joelson notes, “Most life transitions begin with a string of losses — loss of a role, loss of a person, loss of a place, the loss of your sense of where you fit in the world.” To that we’d add “a major financial loss” that compounds the difficulty of whatever else you are coping with. A “risk adjusted investment policy” combined with overall good money habits and “what if?” planning is crucial to managing the slings and arrows of life. Life transitions planning to some extent relates to your age and the ages of those you care for. From your late teens into your early 30s you may be dealing with “adulting,” growing up, leaving home, adjusting to college or workplace, career decisions, marriage, a new baby. In your 30s and 40s, you may encounter parenting an infant, child, or adolescent; miscarriage or loss of a child; birth of a special needs child. Marital challenges may emerge — disagreement, divorce, separation, infidelity. In your 50s, you wake up and realize that in 20 years you’ll be in your 70s, and you have major and expensive life events ahead. Career and business decisions, educa-

tion of children, caring for aging parents or grandparents, planning for retirement, defining what “retirement” means for you and your life partner. Somewhere north of 60, issues of aging are likely to appear. Late in life divorce, physical or mental decline of self or loved one, remarriage. Disagreements involving retirement, where to live, potential relocation, are nettlesome when spouses are not on the same page. Older folks may be bailing out adult children, raising or subsidizing grandchildren. Business owners, skilled professionals, and other workers with a lifetime of experience may have trouble seeing “what’s next” when it comes to retirement planning and/or business succession issues. Older couples may fight over spending, travel, hobbies and passions. Grey divorce, the “Silver Splinter,” is on the rise. Not a respecter of age are challenges like death of a spouse or other loved one, accident, serious injury or impairment, military deployments, job loss or career setback. Dr. Drew Adelman, staff psychologist, Georgia Tech Counseling Center, notes other challenging life transitions include questioning life’s meaning and purpose, questioning faith and spirituality, questioning sexual or gender issues. Comprehensive financial life planning often requires a “team approach,” involving spiritual counselors, medical personnel, psychologists, legal counsel, human capital experts. Talk with your financial planner, but he or she should not stray into areas where they lack expertise or licensing. You may go through more than one major life transition at the same time. One circumstance may lead to another. Money troubles make everything worse! Solid spiritual grounding is foundational to mental health and the handling of major challenges, especially those of the “jarring” or enduring, seemingly never-ending, variety. People of strong faith seem better at coping, crafting solutions, finding ultimate peace. To successfully complete a life transition, you must leave something behind. Those who cling to “what was” never really transition. They remain trapped in draining confusion with diminution of financial, mental and physical health. When faced with a challenge, seek advice. You want to identify the best alternatives to deal with the challenge, plus resources (financial capital and human capital) to power the best alternatives. Begin your quest with the end in mind, clearly defining expectations, what you wish to experience. Change begets opportunity. Spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle counsels, “Some changes look negative on the surface, but you will soon realize that space is being created in your life for something new to emerge.” Attitude is more important than facts.

State agency shows COVID-19 cases in local senior care facilities By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH METRO ATLANTA — Georgia Department of Public Health figures show there have been over 30 residents and 23 staff members who have tested positive for COVID-19 at 17 large senior care facilities in North Fulton and Forsyth County. The cumulative figures, which cover cases up to May 19, include facilities classified as nursing homes, personal care homes and assisted living communities with 25 beds or more.

Ten total deaths have been reported from local senior care centers. Seven Forsyth County facilities have reported cases. Four centers in Alpharetta, four in Roswell, one in Johns Creek and one in Milton had also reported either staff or resident positive cases as of May 19. Around half of those facilities had no confirmed cases a month ago. Several of the facilities that had reported coronavirus cases among residents or staff on April 17 have not reported any additional cases. Nursing homes, assisted living facili-

Oh to be a dog! I’ve been busy writing book three in my Dickens & Christie mystery series, so I’ve turned the pen over to Banjo. He yearns to hear you like his writing as well as his mom’s. KATHY ** MANOS PENN It’s been a while since I’ve been to Miss Beverly’s house, and I’ve been daydreaming about seeing her again. When I last visited, she and her daughter SarahAnne had just returned from a summer wedding in Mexico, and they were both suffering from Montezuma’s Revenge. Day one, we got in a short walk — short because Miss Beverly was still under the weather and because our Atlanta temps were in the 90s. It was so hot that Miss Beverly wiped me down with a wet towel before turning the floor fan directly on me on the cool tile in the kitchen. The Royal Critter Sitter knows all the tricks for taking care of the Royal Pooch. All was well until SarahAnne came by to drop off her new dog, Lily Belle. Lily is a beauty, but she is ridiculously rambunctious. She’s a rescue, and they think she’s less than 2 years old. Judging by her energy level, I’d say she’s younger than that. No matter how quietly I reclined on the floor, that girl got right in my face. She jumped she leaped, she darted, and most irritating, she kept licking me in the face. It’s possible she was trying to kiss me — I mean I am a handsome gent — but she got on my nerves no end. The last straw was her invading my water bowl. I growled at her, and she backed off but came right back. Maybe because I never lifted my head from the floor when I growled, she thought I was teasing. Miss Beverly knew I wouldn’t

hurt Lily, but she also knew I was mightily displeased with the girl’s behavior. A second water bowl appeared, and all was well, at least in that department. The kissing and the darting never did stop. By day two, I needed to escape from Lily Belle, so I went in search of cool, quiet spots in the backyard. Miss Beverly and her husband Mister John have a fenced yard filled with trees and bushes where a boy can get lost, given a chance. There’s also a huge pond, complete with a bridge, a waterfall, lily pads and fish. Miss Beverly nicknamed me the phantom because of my tendency to disappear into the shady spots in the yard. She’d weed and putter in the yard, realize she hadn’t seen me for a while, and come in search of me. It was our little game. There was no way Lily could play because she couldn’t stay quiet long enough to hide. Me? Like most Pyrs, I can lie still for hours. The best part? I completely bamboozled Miss Beverly. She looked up, didn’t see me, and started the usual search. Only this time, she didn’t find me. She knew I had to be in the fenced yard, but she began to panic when I was nowhere to be found. As she later told Mum, “The game was afoot. Out of the corner of my eye, I spied a large black lily pad in the pond. It blinked at me. Huh? Lord Banjo had stealthily slid down the waterfall into the pond, but I, ‘Sherlock Beverly Holmes,’ found him.” I was hoping I’d get more time in my newfound oasis, but she and Mister John wanted me out. Mister John is quite particular about the looks of his pond, and I didn’t fit with the other lily pads. The problem arose when Lily decided if I could go in the pond, so could she. She’d never before ventured in because she got the “No” signal whenever she approached the edge. It took both Miss Beverly and Mister John to get Lily out of there. And, of course, she didn’t stand quietly in the pond; she bounced and bobbed. We were both dripping lily pads by the time we emerged, and Mister John was none too pleased. I was tickled I’d taught Lily a new game. With my coaching, she may come to understand the Zen of ponds. Youngsters like Lily believe water is for splashing, but we more mature dogs relish water’s calming effect. Ohm. Author Kathy Manos Penn is a Sandy Springs resident. COVID-19: Testing at Wellstar Health System During this challenging time, the health and safety of the community is our top priority. As part of our commitment to helping Georgia fight COVID-19, Wellstar Health System is offering COVID-19 diagnostic testing and antibody testing across our hospitals, health parks, offices and urgent care centers. After scheduling your screening, medical experts select the proper test and provide answers for patients who may be experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, are worried they may be a carrier of the virus or have fought off a previous case of the disease. Wellstar Pathologist Dr. Marla Franks explained the difference between the two tests. “A patient who is currently sick may need a diagnostic test,” Dr. Franks said. “However, a patient who was sick a few weeks ago and is now well may need an antibody test to see if the patient was exposed to the virus in the past.” As our state transitions from staying at home to re-entering the community, it’s important to note that the spread of COVID-19 is still prevalent in Georgia. Along with following preventative health measures such as frequent handwashing and social distancing, COVID-19 testing can help protect the health of our community and prevent potential infection. COVID-19 Antibody Testing Are you curious whether you may have fought off a previous case of COVID-19? An antibody blood test could give you an answer. Antibody blood tests check your blood by looking for antibodies, which show if you had a COVID-19 infection

in the past. During the test, a patient has a small sample of blood collected in a syringe that is then checked for the presence of antibodies. Generally, the test results have a quick turnaround time and are usually available in less than 24 hours. If you’d like to schedule a COVID-19 antibody test, contact any Wellstar health park, primary care or physician’s office, or urgent care location near you. COVID-19 Diagnostic Testing If you may currently be experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, diagnostic testing can help you take the necessary steps to protect your health. At this time, Wellstar is conducting COVID-19 testing across all hospitals, health parks, offices and urgent care locations. All Wellstar physicians can refer patients for screening and COVID-19 testing, and anyone experiencing symptoms should contact one of the above locations. Unlike the blood sample needed for antibody testing, diagnostic testing requires a Nasopharyngeal swab to collect a sample. During this test, a swab is inserted through the nose to collect nasal secretions from the back of the nose and throat. After the test is performed, the timing of the results can vary patient by patient, but most are received within 1 to 2 days. If you feel you need a COVID-19 diagnostic test, contact any Wellstar primary care physician or seek care at any Wellstar urgent care center, health park or emergency department. For more information, visit wellstar. org/COVID-19 or call (770) 956-STAR (7827).
