DUNWOODY, Ga. — The Dunwoody Municipal Court began holding hearings June 16 under new safety protocols designed to guard against the spread of COVID-19. New protocols include social distancing and mandatory masks and temperature checks for defendants, attorneys and any other courtroom visitors. Seating inside the courtroom at Dunwoody City Hall will be limited to provide 6 feet of distance between parties. The court clerk’s office inside Dunwoody City Hall will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays but will be closed to the public on Mondays and Fridays. On those two days, clerks will answer emails and phone calls remotely. “When we had to put a halt to hearings for everyone’s protection back in March, the deputy clerks and I didn’t stop,” Dunwoody Court Clerk Norlaundra Huntington said. “We worked remotely to reschedule cases and notify the parties involved. High school officials approve basketball shot clock By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com GEORGIA — A colossal change to Georgia high school basketball will be implemented this season. At its June 23 meeting, the Georgia High School Association’s Executive Committee approved a 30-second shot clock which will be in place over the next three seasons. The move was heralded by the state’s basketball community, which has long shown support for a shot clock, but it could present growing pains. For years, many coaches have been

clamoring for a shot clock, but there have also been concerns over finding personnel to run the clock and operate it effectively, as well as game delays when the equipment malfunctioned. But those concerns have not been enough to deter the push. Under the measure, the shot clock will be phased in. Beginning in 2020-21, the clock will only be used in select holiday tournaments and showcase games. The next season, each region will decide on using a shot clock. Beginning in the 2022-23 season, the shot clock will be used in all varsity games, including the state playoffs.

Understand Dunwoody’s stream buffer ordinance before you build, remodel or cut trees on your property. Adopted in 2013, the ordinance places limits on patios, decks, additions and tree removal within 75 feet of all state waterways.

One head coach in Gwinnett County reported the GHSA polled coaches last fall regarding shot clocks. The survey of over 250 coaches showed that 77 percent were in favor of the device in high school games, and only 30 percent believed running the clock was out of the feasible scope of athletic departments. Chattahoochee boys basketball is one of the few Georgia teams to compete in a GHSA-sanctioned tournament that featured a shot clock. The GHSA permitted a 30-second shot clock in a sanctioned event for the first time at the Hawks-Naismith Tipoff Classic in November 2019. For the Cougars, who won the 201920 Class 6A state championship, it was no big deal. Head coach Chris Short said the Cougars’ fast-tempo play led to little concern putting a shot up within 30 seconds of possession. Short said the issue will be in the logistics. Schools must not only find someone to run the clock, they will need to provide compensation, which can be strained by purchasing the clocks themselves. Goal-mounted clocks come with a higher cost over floor-mounted units but are easily visible for players. Managing the connection between the clock and its operator is also a consideration. At the Hawks-Naismith tournament, Short said the clocks were wireless, but there were connection issues. Short is in favor of the GHSA using a shot clock and would like to see a goalmounted, wired shot clock installed at his school. The GHSA’s approval comes a few months after a vote to implement a national shot clock was squashed. The National Federation of State High School Association — which oversees all state high school athletic governing bodies — voted down a proposal that would implement a nationwide, 35-second shot clock. An NFHS official said the organization will “continue to explore the shot clock issue.” Georgia will be the 10th state to use a shot clock for high school games.

They did a great job with keeping it a secret.” Burt has been a part of the Dunwoody Nature Center since 1999, and nature center staff members said they greatly value the knowledge that much experience has given her. Burt would assist with special events, field trips and nature classes. “We are blessed with many volunteers at the Nature Center, but we hit the jackpot with Donna Burt,” Cowan said. “Her level of dedication and commitment to our mission is what makes her so deserving of our highest honor.” Burt said her commitment to nature goes back to her childhood when she would explore the woods around her home. “The nature center is important to me because I am concerned that today’s children lack a connection to nature and spend too much time inside,” she said. “I spent most of my time growing up outside and raised a son that way. I wish every kid could.” One day while volunteering as part

of an animal demonstration, Burt had to comfort a young child who was scared of a land tortoise because he thought it looked like a ninja turtle. Burt now says it is her mission to teach children about nature so they “won’t think all turtles are ninja turtles.” The nature center is one of many volunteer positions Burt has held around Dunwoody. She has also worked with the library, Dunwoody Garden Club and her neighborhood watch. Burt is as eager to return to volunteering as the nature center is to see her again. “It just isn’t the same without her being here each Thursday,” Cowan said. “We are looking forward to her return Solution after summer camp as much as she is.” M A Y A O P E N B E S T E D I E S O A R G N A T S I A B U S M A R S H E A S M O T H E R I E T E N S

Live in a condo? You might want to check this! Brought to by – Dan Griffin Broker/Realtor with Keller Williams First Atlanta Insurance policies for fee simple homes are easy to understand. You buy a policy to cover liability and loss of the contents and structure. GRIFFIN You want to be able to replace your furnishings and re-build the home or repair damage as needed. It is also a good idea to have a list of your furnishings and upgrades with estimated costs if needed for a claim. But what if you live in a condominium? If you have a mortgage, you were probably were required to purchase an HO-6 policy from your insurance company. The mortgage company wants to make sure the policy is in place before approving a loan. There are actually two policies needed for condominiums. Master Policy The homeowner’s master policy

covers a large majority of the actual structure. Essentially, the master policy insures the home’s building structure and common areas- liability and repair/ replacement. Condominium laws update in 2010 state that the master policy covers “standard” finishes, back to the unaltered or “un-updated” kind or quality. Any upgrades need to be insured by the individual owner. HO-6 Policy This is the individual homeowner’s policy and should cover the minimum amount of the deductible on the master policy, and upgrades and personal property. Mortgage companies may have specific requirements which should be considered before making any coverage reductions. Finally, the HO-6 policy should have “loss assessment” coverage no less than $2,000. This coverage comes into play when the association does not have the funds to cover its portion of the master policy. Some coverage is usually built into the policy, but it might make sense to look at the limits. Dan Griffin Broker/Realtor Keller Williams First Atlanta 770-843-2175 dangriffinadvisors@kw.com

Covid-19 design changes to our homes Brought to you by – Remodeling Expo Center I think we all realize that we’re slowly exiting the Covid-19 crisis, and as we do, we can start looking back and taking inventory of what we experienced and what gota accomplished. As we reflect, we’re all wondering how things will be different in the post pandemic world. Will we remain physically distanced? Will large gatherings ever happen again? While some people choose to “nest”, the pandemic forced us all to do it… the entire family… for long periods of time. It brought families closer together and it also forced us all to really focus on our homes. People quickly became restless, and as evidenced by the increased traffic at big box home improvement stores, homeowners turned their attention to their homes; to repair and improve them. “We saw an immediate increase in requests for design time with our designers, and the rate of remodeling proposals slowly increased through the pandemic” says John Hogan, owner of Remodeling Expo Center. “Almost daily, we received calls from homeowners who previously didn’t move forward with the work, but now they wanted to move forward fast. Everyone was working from home and now they had the time to focus on that project that they’ve been thinking about for years.”

We immediately saw an increase in the quantity of dedicated home offices, finishing of basements, no-touch faucets, ventilation and exhaust fans.” BRITTANY LINGERFELT Lead designer at Remodeling Expo’s Design Studio Covid-19 inspired changes to the home “Remodeling Expo Center prepares 3D renderings and plans for homeowners, so we can really see what changes they want to their homes. We immediately saw an increase in the quantity of dedicated home offices, finishing of basements, no-touch faucets, ventilation and exhaust fans” says Brittany Lingerfelt, Lead designer at Remodeling Expo’s Design Studio, “people are making permanent changes to their homes and lifestyles, and we have adapted our designs to accommodate homeowners changing requests. If there is a beneficiary to the pandemic; its our homes… they got repaired, improved upon and adapted. People are also preparing for the next pandemic.” For more information about remodeling, contact Remodeling Expo Center at 404-910-3969 or visit the Design Center at 48 King Street, Roswell, GA 30075. www.RemodelingExpo.com.

Moving safely during the Coronavirus crisis NAPSI —If you and your family plan to move soon, you’ll be pleased to know that moving is considered an essential service. How professional movers go about that, however, varies from state to state and the manner and degree to which they’re enforcing social distancing and permitting businesses to operate if they’re considered essential. So, if you or someone you know needs to move, the experts at the American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA) recommend you regularly check such resources such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to stay up-to-date on the latest news. Smart Moves To keep consumers and movers healthy and safe during the pandemic, AMSA offers these 10 moving-time facts and tips: 1.For the health of your family and moving crew, always follow CDC guidelines. 2.Work directly with your movers to determine the best time and method for your move. 3.The moving company you choose should alert you if there are any disruptions in service as a result of federal or state action. 4.Help your movers serve you in the safest way possible. Notify them ahead of time if anyone in your household may have contracted coronavirus, or may have been exposed to someone who has. 5.Check your professional mover’s website and feel free to ask questions on how the company is mitigating health risks. 6.If you’ll feel more comfortable, ask if your professional mover can provide

If you and your family plan to move soon, you’ll be pleased to know that moving is considered an essential service. virtual estimates, rather than one based on an in-home visit. 7.Try to provide your moving crew access to a sink, soap, and paper towels throughout your move. If this isn’t practical, provide hand sanitizer or wipes. 8.If you plan to prepack any items, purchase new moving boxes and tape

from your mover; this isn’t the time to use recycled boxes from online sources, or from stores. 9.Your mover may also have plastic bins available for rental. Wipe down the interior and exterior with a disinfecting wipe before packing anything in them.

10. Consider deep cleaning your new home before unpacking to mitigate further the risk of contracting disease. Learn More For further information, go to www. moving.org and follow @amsapromover on social media.
