Arts creep back to center stage in Dunwoody BY CATHY COBBS newsroom@appenmedia.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — The arts are slowly and cautiously coming back to Dunwoody. The city’s three major non-profit entertainment venues — the Dunwoody Nature Center, Spruill Center for the Arts and Stage Door Theatre — are opening to the public with classes and fundraisers leading the way. Safety protocols are in place at all venues. The Dunwoody Nature Center’s Monarchs and Margaritas on Sept. 18 drew more than 600 visitors, both in-person and virtual, according to Executive Director Nancy Longacre. “I think it was the best fundraiser in the history of the Nature Center,” she said. “Even though there was rain, we had a plan in place to accommodate that, and we did some major upgrades across the board so people would have a memorable event.” The center’s classes, workshops and events are also seeing an uptick in attendance, Longacre said. “I think our Nature Center events, being mostly outdoors, lends itself to a level of comfort that has made people feel good about coming back,” Longacre said. Spruill Center for the Arts has also enjoyed rising attendance for its classes, almost to pre-pandemic levels, Executive Director Alan Mothner said. Last spring, there were no classes held at the center, but summer saw class registrations rise to 524. The numbers grew in the fall with 729 students participating. So far this year, there has been an average

Events are slowly returning to Dunwoody. Left, attendees receive drinks at the Dunwoody Nature Center’s Monarchs and Margaritas event Sept. 18. Right, Stage Door Theatre’s annual “Dinner by 6, Dead by 7” is scheduled to return Nov. 5. of about 1,000 participants for the winter, spring and summer sessions. With several weeks remaining for fall registration, more than 1,220 people have signed up for upcoming sessions, Mothner said. In fall of 2019, the center had almost 1,800 students in classes. “The trajectory (of participants) is starting to look like pre-pandemic numbers, which we are very grateful for,” Mothner said. The Spruill Center’s next event, Spirits for Spruill, is more of a “fun-raiser” than a “fundraiser,” Mothner said. The party, scheduled for Oct. 16 from 4-7 p.m., will feature the unveiling of a new mural at the Spruill smokehouse, as well as live music, a bourbon tasting from Shortbarrel Bourbon, food and a custom beer that Dunwoody brewery Porter Brew & Que created and named just for the mural. “We are not going to be asking people to raise a paddle, buy anything or contrib-

ute financially,” he said. “It’s really just an event to come and celebrate the arts.” Artist Alea Hurst is the winner of this year’s AMPLIFY mural competition out of 25 entries. The space is currently home to Christopher Michaels’ mural, “Find Your Wings.” Mothner said jurors for the AMPLIFY winner decided Hurst’s design was best suited for the space and message for the community. Tickets to Spirits for Spruill can be purchased directly at spruillarts.org/spiritsforspruill. Stage Door Theatre is also getting ready to open its doors for the first time in more than a year. It launches its 48th season with a production of “Romeo and Juliet,” Oct. 1-24, with two performances on Saturday and Sunday and nighttime performance on Friday. The theatre is implementing guest and staff protocols that will ensure the safety of the guests, including requiring either a

proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test for all patrons. Stage Door Executive Director Debbie Fuse said she thinks there is still some hesitancy about returning to an indoor venue. “We are running 40-50 percent right now, but we’d like to see about 60-80 percent,” Fuse said. “I think we have some people who are concerned because we are performing in an enclosed facility.” Stage Door is hosting its annual fundraiser, a dinner theatre called “Dinner by 6, Dead by 7” on Nov. 5. Police arrest two men for suspicious behavior DUNWOODY, Ga. — Police arrested two men seen looking into cars near the Ashford Lane mall in an area that had several vehicle break-ins Sept. 15. Michael Antwan Welch, 42, of Atlanta, and Quantavious De’Mario Scott, 20, of Ellenwood, were both charged with loitering and prowling. According to police, a witness reported seeing the men walk up to parked vehicles on Ashford Crossing and shine a flashlight through the windows. Officers arrived and found the suspects sitting in a car parked in the lot along Olde Perimeter Way. They claimed they were there to pick up food from a restaurant. Officers noticed a flashlight and punch tool in the car. Scott told them the flashlight was his and he used it for work. According to police, several vehicles in a nearby parking deck along Olde Perimeter Way were reportedly burglarized the same evening. Welch had an active warrant from Cobb County for unlawfully entering vehicles. Police determined there

Sen. Jon Ossoff delivers a Yom Kippur address Sept. 16 at Dunwoody’s Temple Emanu-El.

Senator’s address highlights alliance, local antisemitism By JEFFREY ALBERTSON newsroom@appenmedia.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — Channeling his immigrant family, congressional mentor’s advice and continued civil rights advocacy, Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) delivered a reflective Yom Kippur address at Temple Emanu-El on Sept. 16. The speech focused on the deep roots of the Black and Jewish alliance in the south, meeting with government officials in Israel and hopes for the new year. He also highlighted recent acts of antisemitism in Cobb County. Yom Kippur is the holiest day in Judaism and marks the end of the High Holy Days. During this period, the Jewish community engages in self-reflection and atonement. Yom Kippur is the only fasting holiday required in Jewish liturgy, lasting 25 hours. Jewish tradition says on this day the fate of each human being is decided. “It is fitting to take stock today of the threats to pluralism, tolerance, democracy and peaceful coexistence in our society and around the world,” Ossoff said. “Threats not just lurking, but already at crisis levels.” Ossoff is the first Jewish U.S. Senator to represent Georgia and the latest to be elected from the deep South since 1879. He described the January election as beyond the scope of partisan politics and a turning point for two peoples who have faced persecution and genocide throughout history.

“Few predicted that the state of Georgia — both the heart of the old confederacy and the cradle of the civil rights movement — would send a Black pastor and the young Jewish son of an immigrant to represent our state in the Senate.” Ossoff said. “What happened in Georgia represents the historic alliance between Blacks and Jews in the South, an alliance that was vitally important during the Civil Rights Movement and which Congressman John Lewis urged me and all of us to sustain.” Ossoff took the oath of office earlier this year carrying copies of the ship’s manifest that brought his family to Ellis Island, N.Y., in 1911, along with a Tanakh that belonged to Rabbi Jacob Rothschild, who led The Temple in Atlanta. The Temple was bombed in 1958 by white supremacists because of an alliance with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “My generation was raised with the words “never forget” pressed into our minds,” the senator said. “So when at Pope High School in Marietta, Ga., a swastika and a tribute to Adolf Hitler are scrawled on school walls, during the Days of Awe, no less, it must inflame in us the same passion for the survival of our people that burned in the hearts of the generation that emerged from the (Holocaust) and built a future for the Jewish people here in America, around the world and in the land of Israel.”

‘Swatting’ far from harmless pranks, police say By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com NORTH METRO ATLANTA, Ga. — While local law enforcement agencies say “swatting” calls are still rare, they do not consider them “harmless pranks” and will continue to crack down. Swatting is the act of intentionally reporting false emergencies to provoke a Special Weapons and Tactics team response. Locally, officers from the Roswell, Alpharetta and Milton police departments make up the North Fulton SWAT team. Officers from Johns Creek, Sandy Springs and Dunwoody police departments make up the North Metro SWAT team. Each has approved manpower of approximately 50 members. The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office has its own SWAT team. The special teams are trained to perform high-risk operations that fall outside the training of other police officers in their respective jurisdictions. Highrisk operations may include hostage rescues, counter-terrorism operations, serving high-risk arrest and search warrants, subduing barricaded subjects and engaging heavily armed criminals. These officers are often equipped with weapons ranging from handguns to submachine guns or rifles, as well as tools like entry body armor, helmets, ballistic shields, entry tools, communication equipment and chemical agent protective masks. Recent cases Milton Police Capt. Charles Barstow said he is not familiar with any swatting incidents ever occurring in his city in at least the past five years. However, all members of the North Fulton SWAT Team, including Milton officers, are on call 24/7, 365 days a year. The North Metro SWAT team works the same way. “If a decision is made to activate the SWAT Team,” Barstow said, “all members are notified of the call and those

“I know we had one a month or two ago where we chased down a vehicle only to find out the occupants had done nothing wrong and the call was the result of a swatting incident,” Ortega said. “We had others that I can remember where we received information that a shooting had taken place inside a residence. We get there, surround it, only to find out the occupants did nothing wrong.”

SAMANTHA SHROYER/APPEN MEDIA

that are available to respond will indicate so and respond to the location they are requested at.” Last month, the Roswell Police Department responded to three false reports at a single home along Old Course Drive. One of those reports was from someone claiming to be there who called 911 and said they heard arguing and gunshots upstairs, but when armed officers arrived, they found nothing wrong. The next day, someone at the same home allegedly called 911 and the Georgia Crisis Line threatening to commit suicide. Again, the report was false. The victims told officers they believed someone was pranking them. As of Sept. 9, no one has been charged for the false reports. Roswell police spokesman Tim Lupo said he does not consider them “pranks.” “Thankfully, these events are rare, [but] they are taken exceedingly seriously because of the threat they pose both to the resident victims and to responding officers,” Lupo said. “We … will continue to investigate and seek prosecution of those involved in these types of incidents.” Lupo said swatting calls are frequently over significant violence or threats and often involve weapons, so when a SWAT team responds accordingly, victims are

often scared or confused to see officers swarming their homes. “Not only that, but all of the resources pulled to the address of a swatting call are unable to respond to other emergencies in the city until they can determine what they are actually dealing with,” Lupo said. “This behavior is far from a harmless ‘prank.’” In Alpharetta, police spokesman Jeffrey Ross said officers responded to at least two swatting calls in 2012, 2019 and 2020, and just one in 2018. He said officers are required to respond to SWAT calls just like any other 911 call. “SWAT does their best to acquire any intel on the incident and location prior to responding to see if there’s any previous history of swatting,” Ross said. “If we do respond and it turns out to be a swatting call, we would do our best to determine who the individual was who placed the call and we would be able to take appropriate action once they’re identified.” Dunwoody police spokesman Mark Stevens said he is not aware of any swatting calls that have occurred in the city and is not certain if there have ever been any. Meanwhile, police spokesman Salvador Ortega said he can recall only a few swatting calls in the City of Sandy Springs over the years.

Tracking challenges There is no code in Georgia law for “swatting.” It wasn’t until the 2019 Anti-Swatting Act that the state legislature broadened its definition to include most of the elements of swatting under the charge of false public alarm, meaning the ability to tally the number of swatting calls will vary from department to department. For example, Barstow said, most agencies in North Fulton have a crime analyst who can delve into their respective departments’ records management system, but because swatting calls are listed as false public alarm, the crime analyst will have to determine if the incident was truly a swatting call or some other violation of creating a false public alarm such as a bomb threat. This is also the case elsewhere, such as in Forsyth County, where Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Stacie Miller said there are some 94 reports from the past five years that could be attributed to swatting. She said it would take considerable time to determine whether they were, in fact, actual swatting calls. Johns Creek Police did not respond to requests to discuss whether they have handled swatting calls and, if so, how they are addressing the matter. Swatting is an aggravated misdemeanor in Georgia punishable by up to a year in jail in most cases. If it threatens critical infrastructure or results in someone’s death, the offender(s) could be sentenced to as much as 10 years in prison, according to state law.

DUNWOODY HOME TOUR

About the Dunwoody Home Tour

House on the Chattahoochee Had Caesar come ashore at the site of this beautifully landscaped estate, which sits proudly on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, he might have joyfully exclaimed, “I came, I saw, I want to stay here forever.” You, too, will want to explore this magnificent home with an eye to its grandeur and many unique features. This is one of the beautiful homes featured in the 48th Annual Home Tour set for Wednesday October 6, 2021 from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm which is sponsored by the Dunwoody Woman’s Club. Lush plantings sweep you to the broad, gaslit entry porch (note the rain chain which musically guides rainfall from the steep roofline). You’ll enter through newly installed iron and glass paned doors and be instantly riveted by a wall of glass beyond the grand room which overlooks decking, a saline pool, and our state’s tawny river. While white dove walls, white sisal carpets, and white, routed flat-paneled doors throughout this home maintain focus on the river, a seeded glass chandelier casts kaleidoscope patterns on the soaring twostory entry hall. To your right a handmade white resin chandelier, reminiscent of spun sugar, hangs above a dining room table surrounded by upholstered, blue and white tiger-striped klismos chairs. Caesar would have loved them. Chevron white oak doors conceal the kitchen’s fridge, freezer and pantry. A massive 10x5-foot white marble island provides workspace and blue horsehair chairs ample seating. Windows added at each side of the range and a skylight now bring more light to the kitchen and a view to neighboring hawks and owls. A stone-floored Breakfast Room off the kitchen leads to a beamed and covered deck with fireplace. A white oak bookcase and antique woodworker’s sawhorse define the “man’s den” at the left of the entry. An adjoining hallway leads to a powder room with fluted floating vanity. Arched doorways draw you into a spacious Master on Main, decorated in pops of blue and white, with a deep walk-in closet and roomy bath with step-in tub and marble-walled shower.

The home’s second floor provides three en-suite bedrooms for children, a family room with reclaimed wood bar, and walk-up attic over a three-car garage. A sitting area overlooks the first floor grand and wine-tasting rooms and a topside perspective on a chandelier of steel and gilded papier-mâché leaves hung from the vaulted ceiling. This is a home to be savored. And, like Caesar, you just might want to tarry awhile. This year’s Dunwoody Home Tour will include a decorator showcase at Southern Comforts Consignments in Dunwoody. Alpharetta OKs high-end wellness resort By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — It was the second time around for Brandon Wheeless, but the Atlanta developer says he will change the face of Alpharetta with his new vision. The Alpharetta City Council voted 4-3 Sept. 20 to endorse that vision, a sports health complex that includes a 100-room, five-star hotel and amenities to suit an elite clientele. “I think this is going to be a monumental project that is going to not only put Alpharetta higher than its peers statewide but put it on the global map,” Wheeless said after the vote. In addition to the hotel, the 4.7-acre site will include a 156,000-square-foot wellness center with state-of the-art facilities, offices and nearly 25,000 square feet of retail. The plan is an upgrade to Wheeless’ proposal three years ago, when he won approval to place an athletic training campus on the same site at the corner of Kimball Bridge Road and Northwinds Parkway. That plan, then billed as Lux on the Alpha Loop, was geared for aspir-

ing professional athletes in a setting that provided unique landscaping and amenities. The issue before the council was whether the new project would be granted a variance allowing it to skirt requirements for impervious surface on the property. City building codes mandate certain amounts of space in developments be porous to mitigate stormwater runoff. Wheeless and his team of architects said the development would take measures to ensure stormwater retention onsite would compensate for the deficiency in porous surface space. Council members were also concerned with the height of one of the buildings proposed. Under conditions set out in the Northwinds Master Plan, buildings can be 20 stories, although there is no definitive figure laid out for how tall 20 stories is when measured in feet. Wheeless and his team said the hotel will be 130 feet in height, 3 feet shorter than the nearby Jackson Healthcare tower. Sandy Springs hotelier John Crow said The Bailey Hotel will exceed the

REZONING APPLICATION NOTICE The Peeler Road Townhomes project is a proposed 14-unit luxury townhome community. There are two (2) existing single-family homes at 1869 and 1873 Peeler Road (Parcel ID’s 18-352-03-040 & 18-352-03-041) that will be demolished and their plats combined to create a single 1.32-acre site. Proposed townhomes are a 3-story plan not to exceed 48’ in height. Units will be a mix of 2 & 3 bedrooms with an average size of 2400 square feet, each with a 2-car garage. Both existing lots are currently zoned R-100 by the City of Dunwoody, and each is .66 acres. We are proposing a RM-HD zoning with the intent to create a comfortable living community spread across the site with green space available to each unit. Community meetings regarding this project were held on both October 20, 2020 and November 4, 2020. Resident concerns were heard and incorporated into a revised site plan. Setbacks from the neighboring properties were increased as was off-street guest parking, and the overall number of townhouse units was reduced from 15 to 14. Members of the community are invited to view the revised site plan and share their feedback at an upcoming meeting on October 13, 2021 from 6:00-7:00PM. It will be conducted via Zoom Video Conference by the Project Architect and the Property Owner. Meeting ID: 937 5693 8599 Passcode: TAPDG Taylor A. Pitelka, Architect

Developer Brandon Wheeless has plans for an upscale wellness complex that will include a 100-room hotel, a fitness center and enough amenities to market Alpharetta as a hub for “medical tourism.” standards of Atlanta’s St. Regis in Buckhead. “This is a hotel unlike anything you have on the market,” he said. “This is a five-star hotel.” Crow said the hotel and care to detail in the entire complex will put Alpharetta at the forefront of the “medical tourism” market. He said the wellness environment will bring more people to the city.

Councilman Donald Mitchell spoke in favor of the project, calling it “monumental.” “I think this is one of those things we’ll be very proud of,” he said. Council members Dan Merkel, Ben Burnett and John Hipes joined Mitchell in approving the variance. Mayor Jim Gilvin, Jason Binder and Karen Richard cast votes against.

Grand jury indicts former Roswell officer for assaulting, tasing handcuffed suspect By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — A Fulton County grand jury has indicted a former Roswell Police officer, Daniel MacKenzie, who is accused of using excessive force during an arrest in 2018. MacKenzie was charged with seven counts, including aggravated assault, making a false statement, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, battery, simple battery and two counts of violation of oath by a public officer. The indictment states MacKenzie unlawfully committed an assault Oct. 27, 2018, when he tased and punched a suspect who had already been handcuffed and placed in the back of his police vehicle for attempting to break into several cars in the parking lot of a Roswell apartment complex. The suspect is identified as Mario Godoy of Alpharetta. He was 32 at the time. In the incident report, MacKenzie admitted to tasing and punching the handcuffed man. However, the indictment states MacKenzie made a false statement when he wrote that he had done

so because Godoy had been violently thrashing and attempting to get into the driver’s seat of his police vehicle during transport to a nearby hospital. The Roswell Police Department’s use of force policy prohibits officers from using a taser on a handcuffed/secured person unless there is “overtly assaultive behavior that cannot be reasonably dealt with in any other less intrusive fashion,” the indictment states. The Herald submitted an open records request Sept. 16 for the bodycam footage of the incident, but the request was denied. “The current District Attorney’s administration has invoked the exceptions in O.C.G.A. 50-18-72(a)(4) regarding the evidentiary video footage, in order to preserve an unbiased pending prosecution,” Roswell Police spokesman Tim Lupo said. “As a result, we will not be able to release that video evidence at this time.” Following the incident, the Roswell Police Department conducted an internal investigation and commissioned an audit of its police department by an outside agency. It also placed MacKenzie on administrative leave without pay. The audit found the department’s

It also found members of the minority community felt intimidated in their dealings with police. Around the same time as the investigation was being conducted, the Fulton County District Attorney dismissed Godoy’s charges, including criminal attempt to commit entering an automobile, criminal trespass, loitering and

prowling, willful obstruction of a law enforcement officer and interference with government property. MacKenzie resigned from the Roswell Police Department soon after. As of Sept. 17, a warrant has not been issued for MacKenzie’s arrest. The Fulton County District Attorney’s Office did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Metro Atlanta YMCA hires Roswell resident with ‘heart for service’ Roswell resident Stan Kubis has been tapped as new chief technology officer for YMCA of Metro Atlanta.

By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Stan Kubis, a Roswell resident since 2013, is one of three new additions to the leadership team at the YMCA of Metro Atlanta. Kubis has been settling into his new role as the organization’s chief technology officer for the past four months. He said he feels honored and privileged for the opportunity to join the Y. “Working in a nonprofit, mission-driven culture has been very good to me and my family, and I look at working at the Y as a way to give back to my community every day,” Kubis said. As the Y’s chief technology officer, Kubis leads the organization’s technology strategy and daily operations. Under his leadership, the technology will continue to innovate and leverage current and new technologies to support the organization and attract, engage and retain members. Kubis previously held IT leadership roles at consumer products and manufacturing companies and served for about six years as senior vice president and chief information officer for the Boys and Girls Club of America. He said what attracted him to the Y was its 2025 Strategic Plan, core values and especially the nonprofit missiondriven culture, which he described as “a feeling you can’t beat.” “I had been watching the Y for a while, and we began a dialog well before the pandemic started,” Kubis said. “So, it was interesting to see how they responded to it by closing some of the branches and distributing food to those in need. It all happened overnight, and I decided then it

YMCA OF METRO ATLANTA

was a team I wanted to be a part of.” Lauren Koontz, president and CEO of the YMCA of Metro Atlanta, said in a statement Aug. 25 she is excited to welcome Kubis to the Y’s leadership team. “Stan has an ambitious vision and a true heart for service,” Koontz said. When he’s not at the Y, Kubis said he’s walking his dog with his wife along the Chattahoochee River. He said his goal is to keep his neighborhoods in the best shape possible, including mind, body and spirit, and making everyone feel like they belong. The YMCA of Metro Atlanta also hired Paul Nguyen as chief financial officer and Marey Wagner as vice president of major giving. Koontz said Nguyen has a proven track record of driving better business outcomes through thoughtful leadership and actionable insights, and Wagner has a dynamic fundraising experience, which will bolster the Y’s work around major giving. “These roles will be instrumental in helping our organization continue to meet the needs of our community,” Koontz said.

THE INVESTMENT COACH

OPINION

Jobs, taxation, inflation: A triple whammy The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 10.9 million job openings at the end of July. The largest increases in “help wanted” signs occurred in health care and social LEWIS J. WALKER, CFP assistance, finance and insurance, and accommodations and food service. Small business owners and CEOs continue to complain that they cannot get enough qualified people to fill positions. While the focus is on the shortage of workers, employers must consider the workers they have. A piece in The Wall Street Journal, “Work’s Future, by the Numbers,” 9/13/21, illustrated a major challenge. An August, 2021, survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP indicated “nearly two-thirds of workers are looking for a new job.” Eighty-eight percent of bosses report higher than normal turnover. Noted writer Rachel Feintzeig, job seekers are “motivated by the promise of more money, benefits

and chances to climb the ladder.” The search firm Korn Ferry asked 378 professionals what they’d do if an employer demanded in-person work, even just a few days a week. Reflective of new routines engendered by the pandemic, 21 percent said they’d refuse to return to the office; 17 percent would quit. Human capital strategist Maria C. Forbes, Chief Engagement Officer, FIREPOWERteams.com, Atlanta, says hiring and retention strategies must be reconsidered. “Applicants have more options but they, and the employer, must understand the role they are to play in the company beyond the basics of the job description,” she said. “Employers must dig deeper into the skills, knowledge and strengths of the candidate relative to the well-defined role he or she is to play in sync with the mission and vision of the company and the specific team the worker will interface with. Misalignment of the skills of the employee and the role requirements, lack of synergism with the existing team, contributes to excess turnover.” Given the demand for workers and skilled professionals, we will see

increased wage inflation as salaries for new hires and rising benefit costs push up work force costs across the board. Economists debate the link between price volatility and wages, but common sense suggests that consumers ultimately will pay higher prices for goods and services. For small business owners the cost squeeze would mean less reward for the owner(s), perhaps rendering the business untenable. Democrats are crafting a tax bill, and while the final result is up for debate, the assumption is that taxes will rise for corporations, wealth creators, successful closely held businesses, and individual and joint higher earners. Higher tax rates on corporations potentially will show up in myriad ways, including lower dividends for stockholders, smaller wage gains for workers, less spent for investment in the business, rising prices for consumers, etc. Ronald Reagan famously said, “You can’t tax business. Business doesn’t pay taxes. It collects taxes.” Consumers ultimately pay with higher prices for goods and services, or less opportunity as small business owners with little or no pricing power are forced out of business. Under consideration is a top personal income tax rate of 39.6 percent starting at $400,000 for individuals, $450,000 for married couples. Add a 1.45 percent Medicare payroll surcharge, the 3.8 percent Obamacare surcharge on investment income, and state and local taxes, and the price of success goes up. Moving van companies in high tax locales are likely to see increased demand. Corporate taxes are proposed to increase to a top rate of 26.5 percent. Potentially higher estate taxes may mean less for children and grandchildren. The Consumer Price Index rose 5.3 percent in August from a year earlier,

the hottest level in 13 years, but slightly lower than the annual pace of 5.4 percent in July. Energy and food prices account for most of the surge. Some economists continue to express optimism that price pressures will moderate, while others fear the inflation genie is out of the bottle. With ongoing supply chain challenges, a tightening labor market with concomitant wage and signing bonus pressures, and environmental policy increasing fossil fuel costs, price inflation will continue to plague shoppers, wiping out the benefit of wage gains for many lower wage earners. Investors will have to take more risk to grow retirement and other savings in excess of inflation and taxes. Your personal risk/reward profile is a function of age, time frames, tax bracket, comfort level relative to volatility, debt burdens, liquidity needs, cash reserves, etc. Early in my career as a financial adviser, during a period of down market volatility and rising inflation, a gentlemen said, “Lewis, I said I could take a risk, but I didn’t mean I wanted to lose money!” Rising inflation, which is just another way to “lose money,” i.e., purchasing power, increases market volatility and uncertainty. When pundits say, “Don’t worry, the inflation surge is transitory,” recognize that we’ve heard that before. Pardon me if I’m skeptical. Regenstein name synonymous with department store The home of Robert and Jean Regenstein was at 1214 Mount Vernon Highway, in the area where Mount Vernon Plantation is today. David Long remembers the home, because he grew up across VALERIE the road in a home BIGGERSTAFF on Potomac Way in the Potomac Hills neighborhood. The neighborhood was where Perimeter Pointe shopping center stands today, and the Long home sat about where the MARTA parking deck is located. Builder and developer E. Sam Jones built the subdivision. The Regensteins were part of the family that owned and operated historic Regenstein’s department store. Julius Regenstein opened the store in 1872, after coming to the U.S. from Germany in 1826. Robert Regenstein was the son of Joseph Regenstein and grandson of Julius Regenstein. Robert Regenstein worked at the store as a floor manager before he served in the U.S. quartermaster division during World War II. He was stationed at Barksdale Army Airfield in Louisiana when he met his future wife, Jean Loretta Belcher. They married in Valdosta, Georgia, in 1942. (The Times (Shreveport, Louisiana, January 25, 1942) After the war ended, the couple built their home on Mount Vernon Road. Robert worked as vice president of Regenstein’s and later became chairman. He also was chairman of the Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority for many years and served on the Board of Directors of C & S Bank. Regenstein’s Department Store was

one of the early dry goods stores in Atlanta, located on Whitehall Street along with M. Rich and Brothers (Rich’s), J. P. Allen Company, Davison-Paxon-Stokes, and the Chamberlin-Johnson-DuBose Stores. The DuBose family had a summer home in the fork of Chamblee Dunwoody Road and Roberts Drive. Regenstein’s moved to 209 Peachtree Street at the intersection of Cain Street, which is now Andrew Young International Boulevard. The store was known as an excellent place to purchase women’s clothing and formal dresses. By 1972, the store’s 100-year anniversary, there was also a Regenstein’s in Buckhead, at North DeKalb Mall and Perimeter Mall. The company ran an ad in the Atlanta Constitution to celebrate their anniversary, sharing both thoughts of the past and the future. “Come back with us a bit to 1872 when Julius Regenstein opened the store at 70 Whitehall Street for the sale of fine millinery, boots and shot guns, saddlery and corsets.” Robert Regenstein added, “Perpetuating the tradition that my grandfather began, we shall continue to bring fashionable goods, of the best quality, at the fairest prices to our patrons.” In 1976, Regenstein’s was sold to a Texas company. The store closed for good in 1994. According to “Atlanta and Environs,” by Franklin Garrett, Regenstein’s was the first merchant in the South to employ a woman salesperson. Her name was Martha Owens. Jean Regenstein opened their home for the Sandy Springs Garden Club tour of homes in 1973. Premier Dermatology – Providing excellence. Every patient. Every time. Brought to you by - Dr. Brent Taylor, Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta Congratulations to Premier Dermatology and Mohs surgery of Atlanta for its fourth year in a row of being voted Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist of North Fulton! Since opening in 2017, Premier Dermatology has quickly become the goto dermatology practice for quality and comprehensive dermatologic care. As in years past, I decided to sit down with Dr. Brent Taylor and Kathryn Filipek, PA-C to get their take on their success and to learn a bit more about them. Alyssa: Hey you two! Thanks for meeting with me again. Winning the Best Dermatologist and Best Vein specialist for four years in a row means you must be doing something right! To what do you contribute your continued success? Dr. Taylor: Thank you! Well, I believe that my patients understand our sincerity and our dedication to their healthcare. Kathryn and I and our amazing team all honestly care about our patients and their well-being. I hope that that sincerity comes through during our interactions. We always strive to give our patients our complete attention and to learn more about an individual as a person as well as a patient. There are plenty of times when a patient brings something to our attention or when a case compels us to do additional research. Kathryn and I are constantly collaborating and advocating on our patients’ behalf. I believe that comes through. Kathryn: I agree with everything that Dr. Taylor said, our team really is wonderful. And we have received a lot of compliments that the practice has a personal and “boutique” feel, even as we deliver care that is scientific and academic. Alyssa: Dr. Taylor we all know that you are a board-certified dermatologist, and a fellowship trained Mohs surgeon. There is no doubt of your ability to skillfully handle dermatology and skin cancer patients. How many surgeries have you performed now? Dr. Taylor: Oh, probably over 10,000, but more important than the number is the type of cases that we are treating. I believe that we are one of the only practices in the state of Georgia that performs true Mohs surgery for melanoma on the face. Many of the surgeries that we perform are truly lifesaving, and I am proud of the type of work that we perform. Alyssa: How does varicose vein treatment fit into your practice and what advancements did Kathryn Filipek bring? Dr. Taylor: We are beyond grateful for the addition of Kathryn! She really is a fantastic and knowledgeable provider. Most importantly, our skillsets really

complement one another. For example, my focus in the vein clinic portion of our practice is on treating venous disease that results in leg swelling or pain, and Kathryn has years of experience performing aesthetically-focused cosmetic sclerotherapy. She brought PRP for hair rejuvenation to the practice as well as chemical peels and is a truly outstanding injector of Botox® and cosmetic fillers. The addition of another provider also means that we are frequently able to accommodate patients for same day or next day appointments. Alyssa: Well, I think that will help our readers understand more of what helps you both win Best Of year after year. But, as is now tradition, I thought we could ask a few casual questions to allow your readers get to know you both a little better. When you started working at Premier Dermatology, what surprised you? Brent: The administrative side of running a practice was more complicated than I had anticipated. I was not wearing rose-tinted glasses when we opened, but electronic medical records, government reporting, and the insurance-side of medicine all were more challenging than I expected. I want to thank all the patients who put up with the hiccups in the first two years for their understanding as we were working out some of the kinks. Kathryn: Prior to joining Premier Dermatology in early 2020, I had spent almost 19 years working in larger dermatology practice settings. In starting here, I was pleasantly surprised by the “family” feel of the practice and not only how close the staff were to each other, but how close some of the patients were to my current coworkers. It is comforting to be a part of a true “work family.” What are your pet peeves? Brent: I think most of my pet peeves involve reckless or aggressive driving. On the road, people all too often act like they see cars as obstacles rather than as fellow travelers. Kathryn: Expecting instant gratification without the willingness to do the work. I believe hard work is often necessary to achieve your goals. This is something I tell my kids about homework and good grades, as well as my patients who often require a regular routine to maintain or improve their skin conditions. If your childhood had a smell, what would it have been? Brent: Blueberry pie and fresh cut grass. My grandfather had a blueberry and Christmas tree farm and my mom is a fantastic baker. I am beyond lucky to have been able to play outside all day, explore the farm, catch various critters

then come inside to homemade desserts. I had a fantastic childhood. Kathryn: Basically, the outdoors in Michigan. Nose-closing crisp air in the winter, water (from the snow melting) in the spring, fresh grass and dirt or sap on my hands as a kid, and leaves in the fall (which basically ended in September for me.) What is the most ridiculous outfit you’ve ever worn? Brent: I once won a Halloween contest by dressing up as a bag of Jelly Belly jellybeans. My neighborhood Costco gave me a huge clear plastic bag, and I punched holes in it for my arms and legs and filled it up with dozens of different color balloons then taped a Jelly Belly logo across it. My costume was the hit of the party, and nobody could get past me because I was seven feet wide. Kathryn: Anything in the 80’s. Don’t even ask about my hairstyle. Perms rocked! Lastly, if you could tell your 16-yearold self something, what would it be? Brent: To not put too much stock in

timelines. I was raised very traditionally, and I thought that I was going to meet my wife in college, get married right after we graduated then start a family a few years later, and it made me worried when I hadn’t met the right person by the time that I expected. My advice to the teenage me would be to just pour yourself into positive and worthwhile activities and that the result would be becoming who you are supposed to and meeting who you are supposed to all in its own time. Kathryn: Stop stressing. You’ll make it happen. I was so focused on my future, worrying about not achieving my goals, and how I was going to put myself through school that I didn’t stop to enjoy being 16. In hindsight, I realize that having a bit more faith would have gotten me to the same endpoint without all of the pressure I put on myself. Thank you to Dr. Brent Taylor and Kathryn Filipek for sharing a little more about themselves and congratulations again for winning both Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist in North Fulton for 2021!

Benefits of using a REALTOR® when going through the home buying and selling process Brought to you by –BILL RAWLINGS, Senior Vice President & Managing Broker, North Atlanta Office Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International RAWLINGS Realty is honored to have been chosen as the 2021 Best Real Estate Brokerage of North Atlanta by APPEN Media Group for the sixth year in a row! We pride ourselves on creating relationships with our clients and successfully helping them find the homes of their dreams. Our focus is on our clients, as we provide million-dollar marketing for homes in all price ranges and believe that service defines the Sotheby’s International Realty® brand, not

price point. There are numerous benefits to using an agent when you are in the market to buy a new home, as this can be a stressful and intimidating process. Having a licensed professional to help walk you through the buying process can help to relieve the pressure and make your experience more enjoyable. Especially for a first-time home buyer, an agent will be by your side to answer your questions and concerns and prepare you for potential obstacles that may arise while professionally marketing your home to prospective buyers. Finding the right home for you: Once you determine what you are looking for, the next step will be for your REALTOR® to book appointments and walk you through potential homes. These appointments can help narrow down your criteria and determine what you truly desire

in a home. Your REALTOR® will have the knowledge to explain the area, neighborhoods, schools and valuable information you will need to know before making a final decision to purchase a home. Negotiating an offer: Your agent will advise you on an acceptable offer price, while also helping you to negotiate a deal that could save you money. This is such a crucial part of buying a home, and it allows your REALTOR® to use their expertise in the negotiation process. Professional recommendations: There are so many aspects to buying a home and professional resources are always needed. Agents make suggestions on reliable sources they have used in the past, from a trustworthy mortgage broker to home inspectors – just another way a real estate agent can help to relieve stress during the process of finding a new home.

Overcoming obstacles: During the due-diligence period, new issues can arise and a real estate professional can help counsel you toward a solution. This is a time when negotiation is key and it is extremely helpful to have someone on your side who is knowledgeable, experienced, calm and in control, should a situation occur. Please keep Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty in mind next time you are in the market to buy a new home. Our trained sales professionals are the perfect guides to walk you through the buying and selling process. Visit AtlantaFineHomes.com or call our office at 770.442.7300 to allow one of our dedicated professionals assist you today. Patient-Centered, State-of-the-Art Women’s Healthcare available in Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Cumming Brought to you by – Modern OBGYN of North Atlanta With no time to be sick, in pain or have surgery, the providers of Modern OBGYN know that educating women with different options for surgery is important. Dr. John Reyes, Dr. Ingrid Reyes, Dr. Natu Mmbaga, Dr. Annie Kim, Dr. Zin Alonso, Dr. Christy Kenkel, Dr. Rachel Prosper, and Dr. Nada Megally understand that one way of helping women in this busy world is through minimally invasive surgical options via robotic surgery and in-office surgical procedures. “There are so many great options for women,” Dr. John Reyes said. “It’s our job to get that information to them and make them aware they don’t need large incisions, long hospital stays, or painful recovery times.” Minimally invasive robotic surgery allows the physicians at Modern OBGYN to operate through just a few small incisions. Featuring a high-definition vision system and tiny wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human wrist, da Vinci enables them to operate with enhanced vision, precision and control. As the first surgeons to perform da Vinci robotic surgeries at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, husband

da Vinci Robotic Surgery

and wife team Dr. Ingrid and Dr. John Reyes know some common issues that can be addressed with robotic surgery are hysterectomies, ovarian cysts, pelvic pain and heavy bleeding. Striving to do their best for the women in the community, Dr. John said, “It’s a blessing to be able to do minimally invasive and robotic surgeries on patients suffering from longstanding issues such as infertility from endometriosis, fibroids, or pelvic adhesive disease.” Established in 2010, Modern OBGYN has three convenient office locations in Johns Creek, Alpharetta at Avalon, and the newest office located on the Northside Forsyth campus in Cumming. Along with compassionate care for patients and their needed surgeries, Modern OBGYN strives to give expecting mothers the support they need by making sure that the mothers personally know their provider. Modern OBGYN has a highly experienced team of Certified Nurse Midwives who work alongside each physician to provide well-rounded, patient-centered and personal obstetrical care. You’ll always know us, and we’ll always know you,” Dr. John said. “No surprises when it comes time to deliver!” Dr. John says the best part about building provider-patient relationships is, “We can help them become pregnant, and come full-circle to care for them during their pregnancy and delivery. It’s the full spectrum of caring for what’s so important to a woman’s life—her health and her family.” Modern OBGYN also provides routine annual exams, Pap smears, HPV testing, irregular cycles, menopause and other common women’s issues. Realtor says current market is no time to go it alone Haran says experience makes all the difference BY ADAM DARBY adam@appenmedia.com ATLANTA, Ga. — In the current real estate market, an experienced agent can provide valuable advice in navigating a changing landscape. Since 1995, Rhonda Haran has been actively providing her services and expertise as a trusted real estate adviser. Currently a realtor with Ansley Real Estate, she has enjoyed building relationships with her clients and fellow Realtors for more than two decades. “There are so many things that I love, which is why I am still doing it after all these years,” Haran said. “But above all, it is the relationships. I have been incredibly blessed to work with the most amazing people over the years, most of whom have become dear friends.” Earlier this year, the real estate industry experienced a massive shortage of inventory. Due to the pandemic, local homeowners have not been relocating. There is also a huge influx of buyers from out of state. These factors created an unusual seller’s market.

Haran said things are “beginning to ease a bit,” and she believes we are “headed to a more balanced market soon.” During unexpected times like these, an experienced professional is crucial when making big decisions, she said, adding that creating connections makes a noticeable difference for any buyer. With such a competitive market, contacting the right Realtor will determine the strength of an offer. With the difficulty many are currently experiencing buying a home, Haran said she is ready to offer her professional advice for those searching for the right property to fit their needs. “Hire an experienced professional who has been in the industry for a long time and is well connected,” Haran said. “This is not the time to go it alone or work with someone because they are your friend or family. You have to have someone who has their finger on the pulse and who has the network and resources to dig up unlisted properties. You also must have someone who knows how to put together a strong offer that will win in a multiple offer situation.” To contact Rhonda Haran, call 404-556-5600 or email her at rhonda@ ansleyre.com. You can also visit her website at www.RhondaHaran.com.

A memorial service will be held at Dunwoody United Methodist Church on 2 Oct 2021. The service will be at 10:00am followed by a visitation in the parlor. The church is located at 1548 Mt. The Waterfalls Trail Last week we took a trip to Cloudland Canyon, the centerpiece of the state park of the same name up in northwestern Georgia near the town of Rising Fawn. We checked out the West Rim Trail, an easily STEVE HUDSON accessible trail that Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net offers spectacular views and as little or as much hiking adventure as you want. By way of review: The West Rim Trail is a “lollipop” trail, consisting of an approach trail (the stick of the lollipop) with a loop trail (the lollipop itself) at the end. It’s great, and it’s one of my favorites. It’s also the gateway to another of my favorite trails – the so-called Waterfalls Trail which carries you to the park’s two major waterfalls, Hemlock Falls and Cherokee Falls. Ahh…the waterfalls trail! On the park’s trails map, it’s just a short little

dashed line. A short trail to two nice waterfalls! How short? Only two miles round trip – not much more than a stroll around the neighborhood, and completing it is one step toward earning membership in the Canyon Climber’s Club, a Georgia State Parks program for folks who love hiking. It all sounds relaxing, doesn’t it? Well…. What the map doesn’t tell you is that there is a LOT of elevation change along that little dashed line. From top to bottom, and depending on exactly how you count it, the trail descends between 800 and 900 feet. For the sake of conversation, let’s call it 850. Eight hundred and fifty feet! “That’s a lot of elevation change,” whisper my knees. To put 850 feet in perspective, do a little math and put it in terms of stories, as in stories of a building. The all-knowing Interweb tells me that one story is

Hudson: Continued from Page 28 about 10.8 feet. So do the division. You’ll get 78.7. That means that you’ve got almost 80 stories of descending to do on the way to the bottom of the falls trail… plus another 80 or so stories of ascent to get back to the top at the end. “You have got to be kidding,” say the knees again, reminding me that in last week’s column I called this one the “Knee-Killin’ Cardiac Arrest Trail of Biblical Proportions.” Make no mistake: This is a strenuous trail. If you’re not sure about your physical condition you might not want to try it. Take this seriously. And then there’s the sign you see before you begin the descent. “ATTENTION HIKERS,” it says, in big ol’ capital letters. “BE ALERT FOR FALLING ROCK IN CANYON.” The sign points out that the canyon is a work in progress, which is another way of saying that rocks will do what rocks will do. “It is possible that occasional rocks and debris will fall from the canyon walls,” the sign points out helpfully. “Please be aware of this possibility as you hike in the canyon.” Falling rocks from canyon walls? “Enjoy your visit!” the sign concludes. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Right? Undeterred, and with no attention to the increasingly plaintive pleadings from my knees, I set out. The Waterfalls Trail departs from the “stick” portion of the West Rim lollipop trail and wastes no time showing you what you’re in for. It consists of a series of short, sharp descents interspersed with lots and lots and lots of stairs. How many stairs? The official number is about 600, but I think it may be closer to 50,000 or maybe a million. “Lots and lots

and lots” sums it up pretty well. The route is unmistakable and easy to follow, though some of the “trail” portions are rocky. As you descend, you’ll often have canyon wall close on one side and not much but treetops and air on the other, with wooden railings for good measure. At one point an enormous mass of rock completely overhangs the trail; that one’s a popular resting spot, especially on the way out of the canyon. Interspersed among the sections of dirt-and-rock trail are those inescapable sections of stairs. Descending them works on your knees (and ascending them later on works on everything and certainly takes care of your cardio workout for the day). But it’s worth it. Stick with it, keep going, and pretty soon you’ll come to the left-leading spur which takes you to Hemlock Falls. This waterfall plunges over a lip of rock into a broad plunge pool, and you can enjoy the view from one of the boulders along the pool’s edge. From Hemlock Falls, backtrack to the main trail and continue your descent into the canyon. Eventually, you’ll come to a small platform and a sign directing you left (to Cherokee Falls) or right to the Sitton’s Gulch Trail, another Cloudland Canyon State Park hiking opportunity. For now, turn left toward the falls. This spur ends at an observation platform that gives you a great view of Cherokee Falls plus a comfortable bench where you can rest for a while. It’s also a good place for a snack – in my case, those beloved sardines and crackers. Eventually, inevitably, you’ll need to call it a day and begin that long, long ascent back to your car. Sure, it’s a lot of steps. But if the 84-year-old great-grandmother I met on the trail can do it, so can you – and so can I. Yes, I did it. And you can bet I’ll do it again.
