Neighborhood endures forecast of soggy street By CATHY COBBS newsroom@appenmedia.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — Like death and taxes, a significant water leak on Dunwoody’s Peeler Mill Court seems certain almost every year. Longtime resident Erin Smith said during the 20 years she has lived at the home with her husband, Dwight, and their children, there have been at least 15 minor or major water leaks in her front yard. She lives at the top of the hilly street and has personally witnessed the devastation both to her yard and that of her neighbors’ yards at the end of the cul-de-sac. “It’s almost an annual event that we wake up to water pouring down our hill,” she said. “On Halloween, the water kept gushing out for three hours before the crews arrived.” The incidents have happened so often, it’s prompted some dark humor, according to the residents. During Halloween, after another early morning leak, several jokesters erected tombstones around the repair spot. One proclaimed “Buster Pipes – Cracked Under Pressure,” while another memorialized “Walter Pressure – Slowly Sputtered Out.” And finally, one tombstone paid respects to “Count E. Maintenance – Buried and Forgotten.” “If it wasn’t such a waste of money, it might be funny,” Smith said. “But this has gone on way too long. We had another major leak last Thursday, and it’s getting to be ridiculous.” DeKalb County officials say that the leaks have been caused by a county-wide aging water and sewer system that will be repaired over the next 10 years at a cost of $2.4 billion. “This area is serviced by a 6-inch-diameter concrete pipe that was originally installed in 1968,” a statement by DeKalb County said. “Since 2011, there have been five water leaks in the public system at this location, according to Department of Watershed Management records. Additionally, there have been two private water leaks at this location.” Ben Greenwald, who has lived with his family on Peeler Mill Court since 2016, said there have been several incidents since he moved in, and at least four in the past month. “It seems to be escalating, and the fixes that they are doing seem to be little more than just patching, rather than actually addressing the problem,” Greenwald said. “It’s frustrating watching thousands of dollars in taxpayer money being wasted in this

Neighbors on Peeler Mill Court tried to make light of a serious flooding situation on their street, but they say they’re tired of the increasing number of water main breaks.

manner, as well as the inconvenience to all the neighbors.” Greenwald said the incidents and the repair process seem to occur in a predictable manner. “First, you go to turn on a faucet or a shower, and there is no water coming out, so we look outside and there’s all the water running down the street,” he said. “We then call DeKalb County, which sets off a two- to five-hour process of them coming out, turning our water off, digging a trench, fixing something, and then putting the dirt back in. And then everything works great, until it doesn’t.”

Dunwoody funds sidewalks along Winters Chapel BY CATHY COBBS newsroom@appenmedia.com DUNWOODY, Ga. – The Dunwoody City Council took immediate steps and made future plans to make the Winters Chapel area more walkable. At its Nov. 8 meeting, the council approved a $1.6 million contract to Wilson Construction to build the first phase of streetscape improvements, which will include: • Adding a 12-foot wide, concrete, shared-use path with lighting on the west side of Winters Chapel Road; · Adding a crosswalk and pedestrian refuge island at Congregation Beth Shalom; • Realigning the end of Dunwoody Club Drive to intersect Winters Chapel Road at more of a right angle and adding sidewalk on the south side of Dunwoody Club Drive; • Adding a stormwater collection system and raising the elevation of the roadway to address poor drainage and to retain rainwater runoff from the additional impervious surface. In addition, the council discussed asking for Atlanta Regional Commis-

Thieves attempt to open credit union ATM machine DUNWOODY, Ga. — Police responded to a Georgia United Credit Union along Tilly Mill Road early Nov. 3 after someone tried to break into an ATM machine. Police said the cash machine was leaning off its foundation and lying partially across a nearby wood line. The front cover had been forced open, and wiring from the ATM machine was lying on the ground nearby. The cash holder had scratches but did not appear to be open. A hammer was found a few feet away. Police said no money was taken. Police responded to an office building along Perimeter Center Parkway on Oct. 25 after suspects tried to pry open a Truist ATM machine.

Police arrest suspect in patrol vehicle crash DUNWOODY, Ga. — Police have captured an alleged hit-and-run driver who crashed into a Dunwoody officer’s patrol car at City Hall, nearly striking the policeman. Dylan Patrick Arnold, 28, was

wanted on charges of aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer. The Dunwoody Police Department issued a public bulletin for his arrest Oct. 29. On Nov. 2, the department issued an update indicating Arnold was in custody. According to the police report, Arnold struck a police cruiser with his 2010 Ford Fusion in the parking lot outside Dunwoody City Hall along Ashford Dunwoody Road. The municipal building shares quarters with the Police Department. Arnold narrowly missed Alex Cheung, a 2-year veteran of the force. Arnold allegedly fled the scene in his car, and detectives spent days trying to capture him. It was unclear whether Arnold turned himself in or police tracked him down.

Man sought in robbery of neighborhood tavern DUNWOODY, Ga. — Police were dispatched to an armed robbery reported late Nov. 4 at the HOBNOB Neighborhood Tavern along Ashford Dunwoody Crossing. The business’ manager and an employee said a suspect wearing a Black Lives Matter facemask and Michael Jordan sweatshirt robbed them at gunpoint while they were counting money in the back office. The victims said the gunman told them he would shoot if they moved as he entered the office through the kitchen. The gunman told the employee to lay on the floor and ordered

Drug & DUI arrests Albert Farah Johary, 57, of Aran Drive, Roswell, was arrested Nov. 3 on Roberts Drive for DUI and improper lane usage. Kenneth Jackson, 44, of Mobile, Alabama, was arrested Nov. 6 on Ashford Dunwoody Road for DUI, possession of marijuana and open container violation while operating motor vehicle.

When the manager told the robber there was northing in the safe, he grabbed the cash on the desk and left. According to police, $4,456 was reportedly stolen. Security cameras showed the suspect entering the business and robbing the victims at gunpoint. He was holding a small, black semi-automatic pistol that officers said appeared to be a Glock 43.

Florida teen accused of abetting in dozens of car burglaries in Forsyth County By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com FORSYTH, Ga. — A 16-year-old from Florida is accused of being involved in more than 50 car burglaries throughout Forsyth County. So far, the youth has been charged with 17 counts of entering auto, theft by taking motor vehicle and criminal trespass to property for a string of car break-ins at the Deerfield Juncture Apartments at 910 Deerfield Crossing

Drive Nov. 7. However, Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Stacie Miller said additional charges are pending, and the suspect has been linked to more than 50 car burglaries that occurred at Halcyon Nov. 2. Miller said deputies responded to the Deerfield Juncture Apartments after a witness called 911 to report people wearing hoodies breaking into cars in the parking lot. Deputies later found several vehicles

with evidence of forced entry and an unoccupied running vehicle that had been stolen from the apartment complex just inside the City of Milton. Milton police then located a 16-yearold male who matched the witness’ description running in a nearby parking lot. Miller said the teen had a window punch tool and items suspected of being taken from the cars. The teen was transported to the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center. His identity has not been released.

Street: Continued from Page 1 The neighbors have said that while they are impressed with the response time from DeKalb County, they are frustrated about the collateral damage that has been caused by the crews and the lack of a permanent fix. “Last year, we got our streets paved, and the last time they dug the trench, as they usually do, they put the dirt in the road,” Greenwald said. “But when they replaced the dirt into the trench, the machines left big gouge marks in the pavement. I doubt DeKalb County will be back to repair that damage.” The Smiths say they have also experienced significant damage to their yard, including broken irrigation sprinklers, which they have had to repair at

Those funds, according to Dunwoody Public Works Director Michael Smith, could be available between 2023 and 2025. “As you know, I’m very excited about this project moving forward,” said Dunwoody City Councilman Tom Lambert. “Thank you, very excited to get this started and finished,” Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch said. In other action at the meeting, Dunwoody Director of Economic Development Michael Starling introduced Pond and Company representatives who have been hired to engage Perimeter Center residents about their vision for that part of the city.

their own expense. In addition, several times, sod replacement has been slow. “The last time, it took seven months for the sod replacement costs to be sent, “she said. “I had to pay for it, then wait for the county to reimburse me.” Rachel Williams, the Smiths next door neighbor, said her young children really enjoy watching the repair work, but she would prefer a different type of entertainment for them. “We do love the digger action, but we wish the county would be more proactive in finding a real solution,” she said. The county’s statement said that DeKalb County has repaired the pipe at different points two times and replaced a service line that was deteriorated. The statement did not indicate when permanent repairs to the lines would occur at the Peeler Mill Court or whether it was listed as a priority on the county’s repair list. The $150,000 contract includes a $120,000 grant from the ARC and $30,000 matching funds from the city. “We are looking forward to taking this on,” said Andrew Kohr, director of landscape planning with Pond and Company. Deutsch challenged Kohr to use innovative methods to reach the 6,000 to 8,000 residents in the Perimeter Center area. “We’ve never been successful in outreach efforts for residents who have been living in this area,” she said. “I expect you all to figure out how to access the people who live here to find out what should happen in the community where they live.” The council also authorized $544,512 to purchase eight Ford Explorers for uniform division use, one unmarked vehicle, and two Ford F250 trucks for the police department. It also authorized the sale of surplus police vehicles. The council retired to executive session to discuss litigation and personnel issues.

Who remembers the monthly event, A Novel Idea? Several years ago, local author Kathy Florence brought it to Dunwoody, and many of us were regulars at the Monday night book talks at Crema. KATHY There, we enjoyed the MANOS PENN coffee shop vibe, the food and drink selection, and the opportunity to hear local authors discuss their books. The pandemic brought all that to a screeching halt, but it’s been revived for 2021. Because coordinating these events required a yeoman’s effort for one person, a team of local authors in Metro Atlanta has now come together to produce them. The group started small by holding virtual sessions in April, June and October. Going forward, they’ll collaborate to produce both virtual and in-person events, and the good news for Dunwoody and the surrounding area is that the first 2021 inperson event is scheduled for Dec. 7. If you’re a fan from the old days, you know what it’s all about. If you weren’t with us then, but you love reading, this event is for you. A Novel Idea provides an opportunity for you to meet authors, hear about their books and their writing journeys, and ask questions. Attending these events enabled me to discover authors and books I never would have known about if not for these monthly sessions. In its latest incarnation, the program will feature several authors making presentations, plus time for questions from the audience. All will discuss one or several of their books. The authors invited for

December have written either children’s, family-friendl, or holiday-themed books. To me, that means their books are sure to make marvelous holiday gifts — but then I’m a reader and a shopper. The earlier 2021 virtual sessions featured best-selling authors like Patti Callahan and authors Linda Sands and Brian Panowich, both Georgia Author of the Year award winners. Take a peek at the authors who will join us in December: • Chris Negron — middle-grade fiction • Susan Sands — Southern fiction • Ain Drew/author and Shamar KnightJustice/illustrator — children’s fiction • Kathy Manos Penn — cozy mysteries In more great news, the owner of the Bookmiser bookstore will be on hand so that you can easily purchase the books written by these authors. This truly is a community effort, supported not only by an independent local bookseller but also by the Atlanta Writers Club. We hope you’ll come out to show your support for these local authors, Bookmiser and Vintage Pizza. That’s right, authors from around the Atlanta Metro area will be featured, but the event will be held in Dunwoody for the foreseeable future. This is a great opportunity to shop local and dine local. Native Americans serve during WWI and at Camp Gordon More than 12,000 Native Americans served in the military during World War I. The most well-known were the Choctaw code talkers, part of the 142nd Infantry. The Germans were able to break most codes, but when messages were sent by the Choctaw using their own language, the Germans were unable to break the code. Messages were sent beVALERIE tween Oct. 26-28, 1918, during the BIGGERSTAFF Meuse-Argonne offensive. The use of their language led to a successful attack where the Germans were caught by surprise. Members of the Cherokee, Eastern Band Cherokee, Comanche, Lakota, Sioux, Cheyenne, Osage, and HoChunk (Winnebago) nations also helped communicate with their language. According to worldwar1centennial. org, the Eastern Band of the Cherokee from North Carolina are the earliest documented code talkers. They used their native language to send messages during the Somme offensive around Oct. 8, 1918, as part of the 105th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division. In May of 1918, 25 men from the Creek Nation were transferred from Camp Travis, Texas. to Camp Gordon, a World War I encampment in Chamblee, Georgia. They were all graduates of Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas, who volunteered for service. (Atlanta Constitution, May 2, 1918, “Gordon Now Boasts of Baseball Team of Full-Blooded Creek Indians”) At Camp Gordon, they became part of the 8th company, 1st replacement forces. The Constitution article praises the soldiers as having “fast won the admiration of all with whom they have come into contact here by their courtesy and ability as soldiers.” However, the main subject is their ability as a baseball team. Camp Gordon already had active football and baseball teams. Mike Tahdooahnippah, a graduate of the Carlisle Boarding School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, became head of the new baseball team. Members of the baseball team are listed by name: Samuel Mullen, Jacob Wahkinney, Bert Tanisahi Cable, Edward Nahquanady, James Maddox, Cleveland Tah-

By June 1918, these men were aboard the ship Matsonia heading overseas, so baseball quickly became a memory of their brief time at Camp Gordon. Records show that the soldiers made it home. Their names are found in later documents, such as ships returning from France in 1919, Indian census rolls, and obituaries and grave records from decades later. ineligible for the draft. They volunteered for service. In 1919, all Native Americans who served during WWI were given citizenship, and in 1924 Congress passed the Indian Citizenship Act, finally recognizing all Native Americans as citizens. Dear Reader, I am pleased to present Appen Media Group’s newest addition to your local newspaper, a free coupon page for local restaurants that we hope to update and publish every week. This is a continued effort by our company to support local restaurants through a still very trying economic period. This program costs participating restaurants nothing, other than the discount they are offering their customers in the coupon. It is a small way for us at Appen Media Group to give back to the business community that has given us so much. Our hope is that this will continue to protect the high quality of life we have come to enjoy in the north Metro area. For me, the pandemic highlighted the best in you – our readers – as you rushed to the aid of local businesses looking for new and creative ways to keep their lights on. You made donations, ordered take out, bought gift cards, took food to healthcare workers – whatever you could do to help out. Local businesses still desperately need your continued support and patronage. So, please take advantage of these great offers! While you are at it, please take a look through our newspaper and support our advertisers. They are the reason we are able to offer this program – for free – to local restaurants.

4400 Ashford Dunwoody Rd , Atlanta (Perimeter mall food court) 470-769-8405 *Cannot be combined with other offer. Must present coupon to redeem offer. Expires 12/31/21.

Best, Hans Appen, Publisher
