American Legion Cumming Post 307 Commander Gary Ely has assumed the leadership role for the 300-member organization.

American Legion names new commander FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Gary Ely has taken the reins as commander of American Legion Cumming Post 307. The appointment was officially effective on March 2, upon the resignation of former Commander Larry Havenhill, who is relocating to central Texas with his wife. Ely will also be accepting the upcoming nomination for the same position for the 2020-2021 Post year. In a statement he made through the local Legionnaire Letter’s bimonthly newsletter, Ely told the 300-member group one of his first goals. “The coronavirus has delayed our efforts to re-energize the post and to raise money and execute our budget,” he wrote. “But plans are underway to not only accomplish these goals, but also to upgrade our number one potential fund-raising tool, a 105 mm howitzer named Howie.”

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — More than 20 percent of Forsyth County residents have requested an absentee ballot for the June 9 primary election. As of May 11, over 34,000 of the county’s 156,000 registered voters had requested an absentee ballot. The number of absentee ballots requested this year is unprecedented. Fewer than 600 combined absentee ballots were cast in the November 2015 and November 2019 general elections. This year’s primary election was originally set for May 19, but officials chose to postpone election day until next month and offered absentee ballot request forms to the state’s 6.9 million registered voters over concerns of congregations at polling stations. Voters can request a Republican, Democratic or nonpartisan ballot. Among Forsyth voters, over 13,000 Republican, around 10,000 Democratic and nearly 2,000 nonpartisan ballots had been requested as of May 11. Ballots must be filled out with either blue or black ink and placed inside a sleeve sent with the ballot. Voters must then sign an oath on the return envelop before mailing their ballot to the state. Along with the presidential election, several state and county seats are being contested. U.S. Sen. David Perdue is running uncontested on the Republican ballot with a field of six Democrats and one Libertarian challenging him for the seat. No vote will be taken for the U.S. Senate seat held by Kelly Loeffler in the primary election. Rather, a nonpartisan election will be held Nov. 3, and all candidates will appear on the same ballot. Doug Collins, who represents Georgia’s 9th Congressional District that includes

Nine Republicans and three Democrats qualified earlier this year to fill Collins’ current seat. The 7th Congressional District race includes seven Republicans and six Democrats. Republican incumbent State Sen. Greg Dolezal will run uncontested in the District 27 primary. Democrat Brook Griffiths is the sole candidate on the Democratic ticket for the seat. Republican incumbent State Sen. Steve Gooch, who represents the northeast corner of the county in District 27, is running uncontested on the Republican ticket. Democratic challenger June Krise runs uncontested in the Democratic primary for the seat. State House incumbents Wes Cantrell (District 22), Sheri Gillian (District 24) and Todd Jones (District 25) are running uncontested on the Republican ticket to retain their seats. One Republican, Lauren McDonald III, and a single Democrat, Jason Boskey, are vying for the District 26 seat. Three seats are up for grabs on the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners, but only one will be contested. Alfred John was the sole qualifier to replace District 2 outgoing Commissioner Dennis Brown. Commissioner Laura Semanson will run uncontested for the District 5 seat. District 4 Republican incumbent Cindy Jones Mills will run to retain her seat against three Republican challengers — Kenny Anderson, Amy Barfield and Brandy Bevis. Forsyth County Board of Education District 3 incumbent Tom Cleveland faces Barry S. Herrin on the Republican ticket. Republicans Paul W. Holbrook and Ted Paxton qualified for Forsyth County Coroner. Forsyth County Sheriff Ron H. Freeman, Clerk of Superior Court Greg. G. Allen and Tax Commissioner Matthew C. Ledbetter are running uncontested. Other uncontested races include: Judge of Probate Court (Daisy Weeks-Marisko); Chief Magistrate (Walker H. Bramblett); Chief Judge, State Court of Forsyth County (T. Russell McClelland III).

Commission adopts measure to resume public hearings Forsyth lays out plans to allow participation from interested citizens By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — With a backlog of zoning cases and land-use ordinances piling up, Forsyth County laid plans May 12 to resume hearings that will allow for public comment. At its regular, bi-monthly work session, the County Commission took steps that will initially grant full access to meetings online, beginning with the May 19 Planning Commission session. The agenda for that meeting has close to a dozen items requiring a public hearing in which citizens would be granted opportunity for comment. Over the past 60 days, Forsyth County has shut down its Planning Commission, its Zoning Board of Appeals, its Civil Service, its Animal Review Board and a host of other boards

that draw on public input to render a decision. Even the subject matters before the County Commission have been limited to items not requiring public comment. That is in contrast to regular commission meetings before the pandemic when the public was provided two opportunities outside of public hearings to speak on just about any topic they chose. County officials say that upgraded Zoom technology, provided through a contract with AT&T, will now allow for citizens to address the various boards during public hearings. County Commissioners will get a chance to test the new system at their May 21 meeting that is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Even so, officials will still have to wrestle with the rollout of public hearings. The commission adopted a plan May 12 through which all public hearings, beginning with the May 19 Planning Commission meeting, will be conducted online. During those sessions, the public will be provided access, either by phone

or teleconference, to weigh in on items. However, plans also call for reopening the county administrative building — or some other facility — for in-person public hearings on June 3. Accommodations would be made to provide enough space for visitors to avoid crowding. Details of that plan, though, are complicated by the fact that some residents may not wish to attend meetings of public gatherings. So, commissioners are attempting to devise a system to accommodate those who wish to contribute to the discussion by phone or computer. “There may be people — it doesn’t matter what we do, masks, social distancing — they’re not coming,” said County Attorney Ken Jarrard. “I think these times would lend itself to there being alternative ways for those people to engage.” The resolution Jarrard will draft continues provisions of an earlier countywide emergency order that allows certain concessions to businesses operating during the pandemic, such as allowing restaurants with licenses for on-premises consumption of alcohol to offer to-go

beer and wine. It also provides allowances for waiving penalties for late payments of certain taxes, performing the bidding process electronically and acceptance of plans electronically through the Planning Department. The resolution would remain in effect as long as the governor’s statewide emergency remains in force, currently through June 12. Commission Chairwoman Laura Semanson pointed out that if individual elements addressed within the resolution need to be extended or shortened, the commission can deal with those items separately in the coming days and weeks. The resolution does not address openings of all government facilities, such as parks. Those operations are on a separate phased schedule for reopening, according to Parks Director Jim Pryor. Currently, Pryor said, plans are to open the rec centers and the skate park. Summer camps and community buildings are on tap for opening sometime in June, he said.

Forsyth’s newest high school on track for 2021 opening By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Construction on Forsyth County’s newest high school, East Forsyth High, continues on schedule despite the COVID-19 concerns that effectively shut down much of the state beginning in mid-March. The $85 million school on Jot Em Down Road in Gainesville is set to open in August 2021 with capacity for up to 2,125 students. “The [COVID] pandemic has not impacted our construction on our new schools opening in 2021, or the building of [other schools] that are scheduled to be completed in late 2021,” said Jennifer Caracciolo, Communications director for Forsyth County Schools. In addition to East Forsyth, the district will open Hendricks Middle School in August 2021, followed by two non-traditional school sites. The school constructions are being funded through the bond referendum passed by voters in 2018, Caracciolo noted. East Forsyth High will be the seventh traditional high school in the county, with a design similar to Denmark High which opened in 2018. Along with the full range of academic and athletic programs, EFH will have CTAE (career, technical, agricultural education) programs in a variety of pathways. These include a construction lab for carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry

A unique offering will be the Early Childhood Education Program where early plans have students running a small, child care center at the school as part of their curriculum. EFH is situated on 90 acres on the far northeast section of the county. As constructed, the school has a capacity of 2,125 students, however the building design allows for a future addition to accommodate 2,475 students.

In fast-growing Forsyth County, that option is likely as the district has seen enrollment grow by more than 50 percent in the past decade. with few signs of slowing down. Forsyth County Schools is the state’s seventh largest district, with an enrollment of nearly 51,000 students this year. Since 2001, the Forsyth County School District has opened 21 new schools, with the 22nd one – Poole’s Mill Elementary – opening this summer. The redistricting process will begin in the fall for both EFH and Hendricks

Middle School. Students zoned to EFH will draw primarily from North Forsyth and Forsyth Central high schools; both of which had enrollments over 2,500 students this year. EFH will open with grades 9-11. First year enrollment is expected to be similar to Denmark’s first year which was 1,335 students in grades 9-11. Caracciolo said parents can visit the district’s website, www.forsyth.k12. ga.us/future, to see the list of existing schools which could be impacted by new attendance lines in 2021.

Struggle to fill needs continues for Forsyth’s Meals by Grace By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Meals by Grace has provided tens of thousands of meals in recent weeks, but the organization still faces an increased demand while supplies dwindle. From March 13 to May 8, Meals by Grace provided more than 60,000 meals to around 6,000 children and their families, but there is a grim outlook for securing enough food to continue that rate. “Food banks are at their worst, not even providing 20 percent of what we need — mainly shelf-stable food,” the nonprofit’s Executive Director Suellen Daniels said. With limited supplies at food banks, the organization is now having to turn to buying food at retail cost, which requires more funds for fewer supplies. “We’ve no option left, given the amount of food we need to feed the numbers of those in need, but to begin purchasing what we can find, retail,” Daniels said. “At this point, it’s a toss up between desperately needing food and dollars with which to have on hand to make quick purchases when we do find something. Supplies in stores are ‘iffy,’ and none are yet fully and sufficiently stocked, either.” Daniels said Dollar Tree appears to be the most affordable options for her organization’s needs. “Some community folks shop regularly at Costco, Sam’s Club or BJ’s and bring us bulk stuff, but if we’re buying, we have to find the cheapest sources, and Dollar Tree seems to be it,” Daniels said. Prior to the increased demand on food banks brought on by the pandemic, Daniels said she could order 100 boxes of frozen meat and 100 boxes of mixed canned goods every week at a cost of 16 cents per pound, far less than retail prices, from the Georgia Mountain Food Bank. It is not just higher prices that are creating the problem, though. “Our orders with [Georgia Mountain Food Bank] have been limited by a lack of supply to maybe 25 percent of normal,” Daniels said. “Even that amount is not always available. Last week we were finally able to get a few boxes of miscellaneous canned goods. Some weeks we could only pick up eggs.” When food can be sourced, storage space can be an issue. Daniels said Atlanta Community Food Bank’s inventory mostly offers frozen bulk food and a minimum order of 1,200 pounds. That amount requires more freezer space than Meals by Grace can accommodate. Also, thawing, then distributing some of the food and refreezing the rest presents health hazards.

Ways to help Meals by Grace Executive Director Suellen Daniels said food items needed most include: canned fruits and vegetables, soups, boxed cereal, boxed macaroni and cheese, fruit/applesauce cups and large, heavy duty paper grocery bags. Funds can also be donated at mealsbygrace.org, or by texting “FeedKidsNow” to 44321. The organization also needs volunteers. “Because we deliver to the front porch of some families that just don’t have regular, reliable or available transportation to get to a food pantry, we need lots of volunteers,” Daniels said. “We have opportunities just about every day of the week. School social workers have given us personal referrals of families in the most critical need. We must be active responders to help them. To do that, we must have heroes, volunteers to help get the food prepared and delivered to them.” A calendar of volunteer opportunities is available at mealsbygrace.org. “We are maintaining available supplies of all pre-existing safety precautions like gloves, masks, hand sanitizer, [a] clean environment, teams of 10 or less and social distancing spaces isolated from other teams. All for the continued safety of our volunteers when they are serving with us.” The end of the school year will also mark the end of some school-provided meals that have been distributed at bus stops in the area. “What this means is the families who were able to access even that little bit of extra food will now no longer have that and will have to seek additional sources like Meals by Grace to provide for their children’s basic needs,” Daniels said. Meals by Grace still has restaurant and distributor partners who provide what they can, she said, and that food goes out the door a soon as it arrives. The organization is “eagerly awaiting” a potential gift of boxed meals from the USDA through its Lion’s Club partner, which will be delivered and distributed in the same day. A bright spot for the upcoming weeks is the anticipation of receiving $25,000 in donated funds raised by Alpharetta Rotary’s Donation Derby event held earlier this month.

Some parking areas were reopened, including at the Abbotts, Medlock, Jones, Island Ford, Paces Mill, Powers Island, Akers Mill, Interstate North and Johnson Ferry North locations. Picnic areas, shelters, comfort stations and the Hewlett Lodge Visitor Center remain closed. “We welcome visitors back to the park to use the trails and river for recreation,” said Acting Superintendent Ann Honious. “Where parking areas remain closed or are full, we ask visitors to please park safely and legally, following all regulations, to assist in creating a safe visitor experience for all.” Honious said the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is following guidelines from the White House, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and state and local public health authorities for increasing access. It will implement a phased approached for reopening any remaining closures on a park-by-park basis. Details and updates on park operations can be found online at nps.gov/coronavirus.

Denmark soccer sisters named to all-region team By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Though the 2020 GHSA soccer season ended prematurely and abruptly due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was lengthy enough for a pair of Denmark sisters to impress and earn spots on the Region 7-AAAA All-Region First Team. Senior centerback Jordan Watson and freshman centerforward Arin Watson made all-region accolades a family affair. Though the sisters each have plenty of soccer experience, their age difference prohibited them from playing on the same team until this season. “I was very excited to know [Arin] was going to be playing with me, it had me feeling like a proud sister,” Jordan said. “I was a bit nervous she might steal a bit of the spotlight, but it made me elated to see her working hard every day in practice.” Arin, who led the Danes in goals in the shortened season, said the opportunity to finally be on the same field with her sister had a “major impact” this season. “She was a really supportive captain

and sister when I needed her to be,” Arin said. “Even if the season was cut short, it was great to play for her and the team, and it is great to have her as a sister, teammate and captain. I loved playing with her.” Jordan, who will attend Emory University in the fall, said she was grateful to earn her first all-region accolade in her senior season, and especially so along with her sister. “Honestly, it was a big honor and showed me all the work I have been putting in has meant something,” Jordan said. “And to be on the [all-region] team with my sister is great. This was a chance for us to put our talents to use, and to both be on the all-region team showed we had an impact on the game.” The experience was memorable for her younger sister, as well. “I had never played with my sister before, and we had our parents in the stands watching,” Arin said. “And it was really an honor and exciting to come into a program like Denmark.” The pandemic cut Denmark’s season to just 10 games, and while it was a tough pill to swallow for the Watson

As businesses begin to reopen, we know that some of those employers are going to be looking to build back their workforce ... LAURA STEWART, Vice President, Forsyth County Chamber 10 | Forsyth Herald | May 21, 2020

Chambers team up to offer regional online job fairs Sessions will target specific industries By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com NORTH METRO ATLANTA, Ga. — The resources of two area chambers of commerce have begun a collaboration to connect industries with potential labor forces in a series of virtual hiring events. The Greater North Fulton Chamber and Forsyth County Chamber are hosting online events that will feature representatives from local employers who will briefly discuss open positions, qualifications and how job seekers can apply. Attendees will also be able to participate in a break-out session with employers to ask questions about their company and specific opportunities. “This is definitely new territory for all of us,” said Kali Boatright, president and CEO of the Greater North Fulton Chamber. The Chamber’s focus over the past nine months, she said, has been launching and nurturing its new job website, northfultonjobs.com. Director of Economic and Talent Development Mark Goodman has been responsible for the launch and assisted in the collaboration with Forsyth County for the virtual job fair, Boatright said. Right now, employers and employees are hurting, some industries more than others, Goodman said. “Food service and hospitality is still kind of lagging behind,” he said. “The restaurants that do want to open are having struggles finding workers. Manufacturing and assembly work, they seem to be needing people.”

Construction seems to be the only sector that hasn’t slowed over the past couple of months, he added. Boatright said she hopes the job fair will be one more tool the chamber can use to help get businesses back on track. “So many of them, you know their hearts are broken that they have had to lay off or furlough employees,” she said. “This really gives them an opportunity as they come back to be able to expand workforces if that’s what they need to do, but also for those employees to find solid, local jobs. That’s what we’re really working on and why we collaborated on this.” Laura Stewart, vice president with the Forsyth County Chamber, said that since the pandemic hit in early March, the organization has stepped up efforts to regularly survey members to get a read on what types of assistance could be offered. “Things were changing rapidly day

Online Job Fairs Each Friday through mid-June, the chambers will sponsor other online job fairs targeting specific industries. Here’s a schedule of the remaining job fairs: • Healthcare Virtual Job Fair – Friday, May 22, noon to 2 p.m. • Hospitality Virtual Job Fair – Friday, May 29, noon to 2 p.m. • Technology Virtual Job Fair – June 5, noon to 2 p.m. • Construction Virtual Job Fair – June 12, noon to 2 p.m. to day,” she said. “Early in our surveying efforts, we had employers reporting about layoffs and temporary layoffs.” As the state and region continue to phase in business reopenings, Stewart

said the Chamber wanted to get ahead of the curve. “Now, as businesses begin to reopen, we know that some of those employers are going to be looking to build back their workforce, and we are trying to give them a platform to do that.” Prior to this season, the Forsyth Chamber had only dealt with in-person job fairs. How to execute one online was something different. In a virtual setting, she said, it makes sense to split sessions by industry. Part of that is logistics — cyber sessions can be difficult to manage when the number of participants and interests are massive. Also, businesses are different, and certain employers are looking for specific skills in their applicants. It just made sense to stagger the sessions by industry, Stewart said, because job seekers and employers would be of like mind when attending the online sessions. “We partnered with our friends at the Greater North Fulton Chamber because we realized that employment doesn’t have county borders,” Stewart said. The North Fulton Chamber has been a great partner and helped bring in a lot of employers and supply information on how to conduct an online job fair, she said. There is no cost for job seekers or employers to participate. The first session, which focused on manufacturing, was held May 15. Job seekers in North Fulton can register for other upcoming sessions by visiting gnfcc.com. Businesses interested in showcasing their opportunities should contact Mark Goodman at mgoodman@gnfcc.com. Those seeking employment in Forsyth can register at focochamber.org. Employers wishing to participate can contact Beth Harris at bharris@focochamber.org.

The Rule of 10 when making decisions By MICHELLE WILSON Wilson Legal, PC I recently had a business coach discuss the Rule of 10 in decision making. These past few months it seems like time has sped up – as if we are living WILSON more life in less time. The rules of how we live seem to change weekly and even daily. Sometimes our first reaction is to make a knee-jerk decision. I have found that I am getting responses so quickly that people aren’t really thinking about what they are choosing. So I thought this lessen might be a good one for today. The Rule of 10 when making decisions goes like this. BEFORE you decide and respond to a circumstance or a question, ask yourself these four (4) questions: 1. How will I feel about my decision in 10-minutes? 2. How will I feel about my decision in 10-weeks?

How will I feel about my decision in 10-months? 4. How will I feel about my decision in 10-years? When you’re asking yourself these 4 questions, think about what could change in the next weeks, months and years that might cause you to change your mind about the decision you’d make in this instant. Take a breath.

Fulton Science Academy The graduating senior Class of 2020 is experiencing quite a “mixing bowl” effect leading up to their graduation. They were tossed into a situation without warning and out of their control. But it did not end here as related and unrelated ingredients kept getting tossed in and mixed together changing their reality daily. Seniors around the country are dealing with so many changes being thrust upon them without warning. But even so ...they persevered, they rode the waves of uncertainty and triumphed. College decisions also did not come easy and seniors now had to consider so much more than just their dream school. So much more had to be considered now than just being homesick. FSA continues to build its high school program with a focus on college prep and readiness. The program is interactive and encourages students to self-think and consider the pros and cons outside the norm when entertaining colleges. We are so proud of our graduating seniors and want to wish them all the luck in the world as they head out to the various “places they will go”. “YOU ROLLED WITH IT AND THE BEST OF 2020 IS YET TO COME” as you continue your journey, “Surviving the 20’s”.
