Forsyth school officials weigh three scenarios for reopening Superintendent optimistic students will return in August By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County schools are tracking to open the 2020-21 school year on Aug. 6, with district leaders optimistic students will resume instruction in classrooms — with appropriate safety measures in place. During a meeting of the Board of Education last week, Superintendent Jeff Bearden outlined the draft guidelines for reopening on schedule. He stressed the information is in draft form only and will serve as guidance as board members and the community weigh in. “We want to hear from our public and [provide] an opportunity to give feedback,” Bearden said. The district is looking at three possible scenarios for reopening schools in August. All options are guided by the recently released guidelines for school reopening developed by the Georgia Department of Education and the state Public Health Department. The scenarios range from opening the school year as it ended this year with remote instruction and virtual learning in place; to returning all students to the classroom with regular schedules; and finally, a hybrid of the two with half of students in school and the other half at home on a rotating schedule. Bearden said he was “cautiously optimistic” schools will reopen and students will return to their classroom in August. He added the hybrid schedule calling for rotating students in classrooms on CDAR Member SWIFT Code: GMCBUS3A

a weekly basis was the least desirable. Board members agreed. “If we have to do it, we have to do it,” said board member Darla Light. “But it gives me heartburn. It’s a huge burden on the teachers if they are in class all day and have to answer emails from students at night….it’s going to be extremely hard.” Bearden said he would not implement the plan unless it was the only option. “The only way Forsyth County Schools would recommend [a hybrid schedule] is if I was directed to do so by the Georgia DOE or the governor’s office [who tell me] we can only have 50 percent of students on campus,” Bearden said. Starting the year with virtual instruction is also challenging, said board member Kristin Morrissey. She noted when the schools closed in March, it was in the fourth quarter with teachers already familiar with students and routines in place. “Starting school in the fall [means] students don’t know their teachers, and teachers [will be challenged] to assess their students and set a routine,” Morrissey said. Beginning the year in school, she said, would also make it easier on students and teachers if a second wave of COVID occurs. “That ‘in person’ time is valuable if we have to go back online,” Morrissey said. Bearden said garnering 100 percent agreement on any one plan is unlikely. He expects to have a decision on how schools will reopen by mid-July to allow more data to be evaluated, and to gather community input. “In spite of the differences let’s pledge

to work together and be respectful of the various opinions,” Bearden said. “We are going to do our best to put together a plan that best meets the needs of the students.” The July timeframe will also involve budget decisions. The Georgia Legislature returns to session this week to adopt a state budget. Already, school districts have been tasked with absorbing a 14 percent cut from this year’s state allocation. Bearden said that cut equates to a $35 million loss in state funding. He said he has two goals for next year’s budget: to avoid a reduction in force of employees and to keep class sizes at their current level. “I cannot accomplish those two goals if we lose $35 million in funding…it’s not possible,” Bearden said. The budget picture in July will likely influence the reopening scenario for Forsyth Schools, he said. “There are a lot of moving parts and we need all the information before we can finalize a plan for schools opening in August,” Bearden said. “There is nothing we can do [other than] to wait until all the information comes in.”

My Eyes are Dry but I Don't Want to See My Eye Doctor Yet - What About Telemedicine? By: Christopher Easley, Medical Optometrist

In these uncertain times, many patients are continuing to experience the symptoms of dry eyes but hesitate to seek office consultation with their eye care physicians. Telemedicine has provided a platform for patients to seek quick and efficient guidance for their treatment, although it does have certain limitations. This article is intended to discuss the role telemedicine plays in the treatment of dry eye disease. ---------------------------First, understanding the limitations of telemedicine is paramount. Telemedicine consists of either a video chat or phone call with a patient. These types of communication facilitate the discussion of symptoms and allow the doctor to correlate them to disease processes such as dry eye disease. Symptoms of dry eye disease typically include irritation, grittiness, foreign body sensation, scratchiness, burning, stinging, excess tearing, blurred vision, eye fatigue, and light sensitivity. The difficulty of diagnosing dry eye disease based upon symptoms alone is that many of these symptoms can also occur with various other ocular diseases. When any of these symptoms are severe, an in-office consultation is warranted. To formally diagnose dry eye disease, physicians need to evaluate ocular signs. Clinical office examination of these signs before initiating treatment allows the physician to observe for improvement throughout the course of treatment to ascertain whether or not a particular treatment is effective. Signs of dry eye disease include, but are not limited to: reduced tear break up time, reduced tear meniscus, increased tear meniscus, corneal keratitis, conjunctival irritation, blepharitis, poor meibomian gland expression, telangiectasia of the eyelids, debris and/or collerettes on the eyelashes, conjunctival injection, and poor blink dynamics. The video chat will allow your doctor to grossly examine external ocular tissues and/or function, as well as gauge your severity; however, the best way to observe these signs is by in-office slit lamp biomicroscopy. Slit lamp biomicroscopy provides the doctor with the proper magnification to see the signs of dry eye disease. Another limitation of telemedicine in the treatment of dry eye disease is the inability to check eye pressure. Topical corticosteroid therapy may be indicated as a treatment for dry eye disease. Although effective, there is the possibility for ocular side effects associated with topical corticosteroid therapy, such as elevated eye pressure, steroid induced glaucoma, and cataract formation. It is typically suggested that a patient’s eye pressure be monitored when using topical corticosteroids. Although there are limitations in eye care, telemedicine has provided patients a quick way to seek care from the safety and comfort of their home. In these uncertain times, our patients safety is our number one concern and we have made it a priority to ensure patients can be seen virtually online via a telemedicine appointment or in our offices by providing a safe and secure environment. We have implemented new safety protocols that include temperature checks, social distancing, a virtual check-in, air purfiers in all exam rooms , and pre-surgery testing for COVID-19 to ensure all risks are minimized. Forsyth County libraries set to reopen By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — All branches of the Forsyth County Public Library system are set to unlock their doors June 15 with adjusted hours of operation. “We’re so glad to welcome patrons back to the library, but it’s important to understand that the experience of visiting our branches will be different as we practice social distancing and additional sanitation protocols,” Library Director Anna Lyle said. The Cumming, Hampton Park, Post Road and Sharon Forks libraries will be open five days a week. Patrons can use the facilities from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Fridays, 1-5:30 p.m. on Saturdays and 1:30-5:30 on Sundays.

Tuesdays and Thursdays will be reserved for curbside pickup. In recent weeks, the library system said it has checked out more than 36,000 books to more than 5,000 people through the service. “We set separate hours for curbside service because we want to continue providing books and materials to higher-risk patrons and to those who are simply more comfortable picking up materials in a controlled environment,” Lyle said. Curbside pickup is by appointment only. Users of the service can schedule a pickup time by calling 770-781-9840. Online scheduling is now also available through the Forsyth County Public Library website. All branches will take added safety precautions in opening. Staff will receive a temperature check at the beginning of each shift and will wear masks in public

areas. The library is also encouraging patrons to wear masks. Disposable masks will be available at each branch. The system is also asking families stay together and all visitors maintain social distancing from others. Each branch will limit the number of patrons inside the building at one time, and the system is asking visitors to limit their time inside to 30 minutes or less. In-person events and programs will remain suspended, but online programming for all ages has been scheduled through summer. “We recognize our patrons’ desire for library services, and we ask for their patience as we adapt to the changing conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Lyle said. “These changes in library services are not permanent, and we’ll continue making adjustments as needed to keep our patrons and staff safe and healthy.”

Select county services come back online, facilities open doors By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Several government buildings reopened to residents last week and some services that had been suspended by the coronavirus pandemic resumed. The Forsyth County Administration Building opened June 1 with new guidelines for visitors. A digital wait list system was implemented for those requiring face-to-face interaction with county staff in various departments, including the Tax Assessor’s office and Planning and Community Development. The system alerts residents through email or text message when they are permitted to enter the building. Appointments can be made at forsythco.com/appointments. “The new appointment system will allow us to provide in-person services with county staff, while maintaining an appropriate number of people in the various buildings,” Forsyth County Manager Eric Johnson said. “We still highly encourage residents to complete transactions online but understand the need for in-person interactions. This tool enables us to safely allow residents to enter facilities for various transactions as needed.”

County recreation centers, including the Central Park Recreation Center, reopened last week. The county is still encouraging residents to use online services when available. The Forsyth County Animal Shelter resumed several services last Tuesday, including adoptions. Director Cindy Iocapella said while

the shelter was closed, care was still provided for the county’s stray population, but traditional adoptions were put on hold and replaced by a foster-toadopt program. At one point, the shelter’s dog population had been reduced to just four animals. The shelter also provided resources to enable residents to keep their pets amid an economic crash. “When someone maybe lost their job due to COVID-19, we could provide [pet] food and that sort of thing so people could stay on their feet,” Iocapella said. “We had one person who said it was either feed the kids or feed the dogs, and we were able to provide them with dog food indefinitely.” Traditional adoptions are still on hold, but virtual adoption appointments can be arranged.

“In essence, it has just kind of changed the way we do things,” Iocapella said. “It’s less about people just looking around and more about matchmaking.” The shelter is also planning for what impacts the pandemic might have down the road. Iacopella said some shelters in the northern part of the country have seen an influx of surrendered animals from people affected by COVID-19. “Hopefully we don’t get there, but we want to plan ahead so we know what it looks like if we do get there,” she said. “We want to provide services to residents so they don’t have to worry.” Certain county parks facilities were also reopened last week, including recreation centers and all playgrounds. The county’s recreation centers opened with adjusted hours of operation, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with caps on how many are allowed in the building at one time. The Cumming Aquatic Center reopened May 20 and the Competition Pool returned to normal operating hours June 1. The water park will remain closed until at least June 12 under Gov. Brian Kemp’s May 28 executive order. The Forsyth County State Court resumed in-person hearings June 1 to begin reducing a backlog of cases brought on by the pandemic. The court has put limits in place on the number of people permitted per day in each courtroom and will hear “serious misdemeanor offenses” and traffic arraignments. Those given a traffic citation that required an appearance in court should check the status of the citation at the Forsyth County Clerk’s website because it may have been deemed “payable” by the prosecutor. Residents scheduled for a court appearance for the first two weeks of June may receive a notice of a new court date.

Cumming promotes social distancing for July 4 parade, fireworks ceremony By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — The City of Cumming will hold its annual Thomas-Mashburn Steam Engine Parade July 4, but the celebration will be somewhat different in its 63rd year. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the city will take measures to ensure social distancing is maintained at the event that regularly draws thousands each Independence Day. The parade route is being extended this year to allow groups to maintain spacing. It will begin at the Forsyth County Tax Commissioner’s Office on Tribble Gap Road and move south along Tribble Gap and Castleberry Road before ending at the Cumming Fairgrounds. A statement from the city said the move is in response to Gov. Brain Kemp’s May 28 executive order that limits gathering groups to 25 people with at least 6 feet of space between each group. “By extending the parade route, city leaders and parade organizers hope to better allow for the additional space needed to meet the 6-foot social distancing guideline,” the city said. “Spectators are also encouraged to take any other precautions

they feel are warranted, such as wearing masks or face coverings, in addition to the traditional earplugs and sunscreen.” Cumming will also hold its annual fireworks ceremony beginning at 9:30 p.m. at the Cumming Fairgrounds July 4, but the event will also see changes this year. Live music and eating and dancing contests originally scheduled to take place have been cancelled, and the city is also requesting that groups maintain social distancing during the show. The Fairgrounds will open around 4 p.m., and the city said some vendors may be on site, depending on availability. “We are definitely in the midst of an unprecedented time in American history — one that has been tragic for so many individuals and families,” said Mayor Troy Brumbalow. “But throughout our history, Americans have always pulled together to overcome challenges and tragedies, and this one is no different. That’s why we felt it was important to move forward with our July 4th activities.” Those attending the parade can park at the City of Cumming and Forsyth County government parking decks on Castleberry Road, Cumming City Hall and at the Forsyth County Administration Building.

County approves conditional permit for Catholic group’s residential site By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners approved a conditional use-permit June 4 that will allow a local group of priests to construct a second residence on a property along Woodsong Trail in the southern part of the county. The request drew some pushback from a group of neighbors who contended the buildings would serve as boarding houses in an area zoned for single family residential. County officials disagreed. The Legionaires of Christ is a congregation of priests from Pinecrest Academy and St. Brendan’s Catholic Church. The group is seeking to construct a residence for five priests to add to the five-person home already on the property. Bruce Carlisle, president of North Georgia Land and a Pinecrest Academy parent, said the group is trying find a place to gather its two communities of priests. Matthew Dominick, a lawyer representing a nearby property owner, argued the homes would be acting as boarding houses, and that use is prohibited under the county’s unified development code for the site’s zoning. He stated the “proper” way to allow for boarding houses on the property would be to seek a rezoning. “The fact these are very good people does not get around the fact this zoning does not allow for this use,” Dominick said. “This is a classic definition a boarding house under the UDC.” Fr. Daniel Brandenburg, a member of the Legionaires, said the characterization of a boarding house “doesn’t correspond with the reality of what we are.” He said the community of priests consider themselves a family, not employees of the church.

Commissioners accepted the argument. Chairwoman Laura Semanson said boarding houses have “transiency,” and the group of priests would have consistent residents. She added that the men are a “brotherhood in Christ.” District 1 Commissioner Molly Cooper agreed, stating the brotherhood fits her definition of family. The second home was also deemed permissible by county officials. County Attorney Ken Jarrard said because commissioners had previous enacted a UDC modification, he believed the use was permitted on the site. Planning and Community Development Director Tom Brown said the county’s unified code outlines that a single-family home can include up to five non-related persons living in the same residence and “operating as a family unit.” “I would classify this as a singlefamily activity, not a boarding house,” Brown said. District 2 Commissioner Dennis Brown said he was convinced the use is legal and approving the additional home is beneficial for the community. The board unanimously passed the motion to approve the use-permit. Not all in opposition cited zoning or legal reasons for their stance. One neighboring property owner said she was sure the Legionaires are “great people,” but she did not want another community nearby her property. “This is beside my house, this is in my neighborhood, and I just want to protect it as best I can with the same protections that we had when we bought that house and bought that property 30 years ago,” she said. “I want to be a good neighbor, but I don’t want to feel intruded upon. I don’t want a whole village there.”

Forsyth couple cancels $1.8 million in medical debt for local families By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Nearly 1,000 local families should soon receive a yellow envelope in the mail that will release a significant burden from their shoulders. Paul Hoyt, a Forsyth County resident and business owner, and his family have eliminated $1.8 million in medical debt for families in Forsyth and Gwinnett counties. Hoyt and his wife, Brandi, have taken on different giving projects in the past, Hoyt said, and he was intrigued upon hearing about nonprofit RIP Medical Debt through his church. The organization works with donors to purchase outstanding medical debt for those struggling or unable to pay medical bills. “I started researching the organization, and I though it would be an amazing thing to do,” Hoyt said. “Personally, I know some folks who have struggled with [medical debt]. And through this journey with the organization, I just learned how many people are burdened by it.” According to RIP Medical Debt, two-

thirds of all U.S. bankruptcies are tied to medical debt issues and one-quarter of all credit card debt in the country is related to healthcare costs. Inspired by the cause, Hoyt decided to help those in his backyard. The $1.8 million in eliminated debt includes 998 local families with qualifying debt. That includes those who earn less than twice the federal poverty level, those who have out-of-pocket medical expenses of 5 percent or more of their annual income, or those whose debts are greater than their assets. The average abolished debt among the recipients of Hoyt’s donation was $1,809. With the financial devastation brough about by the coronavirus pandemic, the timing of Hoyt’s philanthropy was even more vital. “I love the serendipity,” Hoyt said. “When I had begun this journey (in 2019), there was no such thing as this coronavirus. And then the buying of the debt was a month into this [pandemic]. From my worldview, it just seems to be heavenly timing to help people in a time when they need it most and give encour-

agement when people need it most.” Hoyt is the founder and owner of Connoisseur of Time, an online-based wristwatch company that sells high-end and vintage watches. He thanked his employees for the opportunity to allow him to help others. “This is very much a result of the hard work of our employees to enable our business to grow so we can do these types of things,” he said. Hoyt has also funded the building of a well in Haiti, helped start a business to employ women in Kenya to knit sweaters for school uniforms, and he has donated to various Christian organizations. The letter that should soon inform locals their medical debt has been paid off states the recipient no longer has any obligation to pay their debt and they will not owe any taxes on the cancellation of the debt. It also says “Our forgiveness of this debt is a no-strings-attached gift.” “I genuinely don’t have an expectation to have people reach out or to be thanked or for people to get in contact with me,” he said. “If anyone does, it will bring joy to our hearts to hear what it did for them.”

It’s so encouraging for us, in the midst of this pandemic, to see so much generosity show up RON ALTMAN, BurgerFi co-owner

10 | Forsyth Herald | June 11, 2020

Local restaurant gives back to healthcare workers By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Inspired by its customers’ generosity and in line with its own principles, BurgerFi is delivering free meals to local healthcare workers and emergency responders facing the COVID-19 pandemic. In late May, the gourmet burger chain began the national campaign in partnership with the Marcum Foundation, the charitable giving arm of independent accounting firm Marcum Foundation. Its goal, to deliver at least 200,000 free meals, was reached within two weeks of the campaign’s kickoff. BurgerFi in Alpharetta has so far provided approximately 1,000 free meals for Emory Johns Creek Hospital and Wellstar North Fulton Hospital, and the team plans to keep giving. “We love doing this, so as long as the need is there, we’re going to keep doing our part,” said owners Ron and Terrie Altman. The Altmans, like many business owners, have seen their industry make major changes to adjust to the “new normal” since the pandemic struck Georgia in mid-March. BurgerFi was severely impacted by closures and has turned to mostly take out and delivery options to stay afloat, Ron said. Fortunately, BurgerFi saw significant support from local businesses who patronize it and other nearby restaurants for lunch, he added, and recent talks with the City of Alpharetta has allowed the restaurant to convert some parking spaces for additional outdoor seating. It was during these rough weeks that the Altmans saw the strength of their customers and community. “It’s so encouraging for us, in the midst of this pandemic, to see so much generosity show up,” Ron said. “We’ve been seeing guests of ours who are choosing to buy meals for hospital staff or provide gift cards.” The Alpharetta location regularly supports about a dozen local nonprofits, such as The Drake House and HomeStretch. This time, inspired by their customers, they have joined the effort to help nearby hospitals. “The healthcare workers really are heroes on the front lines,” Ron said. “It’s a natural thing to want to go and serve the people who are serving us… It has been our genuine privilege and pleasure to serve these

We are so grateful to our community and our customers who are so supportive of our business and are allowing us to serve them through take out, delivery and outdoor dining on our expanded patio.” BurgerFi is now open with some indoor and outdoor seating options. It is adhering to CDC guidelines and best practices for the health and safety of its customers and employees, which includes limiting person-toperson contact, wearing masks and spaced seating. The restaurant is also avoiding using commonly touched items, such as napkin holders and condiment dispensers, in favor of single-use items. Ron said they are still not where they should be economically, but he is grateful for the support and wants to support others where they can. “We find it so encouraging during such a challenging time as this, to find bright positive examples of compassion and people helping each other,” he said. “BurgerFi is here to serve Alpharetta and its neighbors for the long haul.”

The most advanced form of pain relief available Deep Tissue Laser Therapy Class IV Laser Therapy is the most advanced pain relief technology available to the public and it’s now available right here in Johns Creek. Laser therapy uses a process called photo-bio-modulation to enhance your body’s ability to heal itself. Laser Therapy works by flooding the tissues with photons, energizing the damaged cells and increasing circulation to the painful area. Treatments are fast, painless and don’t require any down time but the therapeutic effect continues to soothe and heal long after you leave the office. Laser Therapy is FDA cleared to treat pain, inflammation, arthritis, and muscle spasms and are a great alternative to medications and injections. Laser Therapy can treat a host of conditions

including rotator cuff injuries, post operative pain and soreness (for any surgery), frozen shoulder, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, neck pain, muscle strains, low back pain, migraines, and can even be used to relieve pain associated with diabetic neuropathy. Johns Creek Physical Therapy, recently voted as the Best Physical Therapy Practice in North Atlanta, is the only medical practice in the area to offer Laser Therapy technology. “I am constantly amazed at what it does for our patients,” says Marc Stewart, PT, owner at Johns Creek Physical Therapy. Using an Integrated Wellness Plan to keep healthy during COVID-19 Brought to You by HOME HELPERS HOME CARE In these days of self-quarantining and social distancing, our older loved ones are faced with the challenge of keeping safe while trying to manage the serious issues of isolation and loneliness. This could be the ideal time for a fresh look at changed daily circumstances to find new ways to bring balance back into life with an Integrated Wellness Program. Home Helpers utilizes Integrated Wellness as the key to developing a customized plan for each client. This holistic approach focuses on five key factors to reach optimal wellness for you or your senior loved one: mental exercise, physical exercise, emotional/social support, nutritional planning and safety. Mental exercise embraces the premise that you can create new neural pathways throughout your life so challenging your brain is key. Learning new things like a language or skill, doing regular things differently like driving different routes or brushing your teeth or hair with your off hand will challenge your brain, creating new neural pathways. Exercising both right brain (creative) and left brain (quantitative) is the goal. Music, art or plant therapy are excellent for creative activities. Puzzles, games, reading or writing are excellent for left brain. Physical exercise can be a challenge when your usual routine is upset. Take some time to look at options on YouTube for everything from chair exercises to stretches that would be appropriate for older loved one. Look at sites like the National Institute for Aging that have a wide variety of options in this area.

Connect with friends and track with a daily challenge to keep up exercise at a reasonable pace. If you have questions about what’s appropriate, consider an online telemedicine visit to check with your doctor. Emotional and social support are so critical when we’ve lost our usual ability to connect. Set up a schedule with family and friends to check in with each other, try to have a planned connection with your loved ones. Don’t forget the joy that a visit with family members sitting in chairs on the lawn at a safe distance will bring. Cooking is emerging as a great passion for many people these days. Work with your older loved one on a balanced meal plan with adequate protein, consider focusing on a type of cuisine and tie it into some of the music and art items on your agenda. Hydration is hugely important as we age because our thirst sensation is diminished. Tracking how much liquid is consumed can assure adequate hydration which can prevent unnecessary hospitalization. At Home Helpers our heart-centered professional staff is trained in COVID-19 infection control and how to execute our comprehensive plan of care. We can develop specialized Integrated Wellness plans for neurological disorder, heart disease, cancer, stroke, or diabetic clients. As part of our community, we are committed to keeping our older loved ones safe and help them thrive – never more so than in these times. For a free consultation and personalized plan of care contact Home Helpers Home Care at (678) 430-8511.

An interview with Premier Dermatology’s newest provider: Kathryn Filipek, PA-C Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta recently welcomed certified Physician Assistant Kathryn Filipek (PA-C) to the practice. Having visited Premier Dermatology on several occasions, I have become quite FILIPEK familiar with the staff and was thus excited to interview the newest addition. Like all of her Premier Dermatology coworkers, Kathryn exudes warmth, genuine happiness and compassion. Her excitement for dermatology in palpable. The following is an expert of our interview: Maggie Mullvain: What do you like most about being a dermatology PA? Kathryn: I love the ability to establish interactive relationships with patients and their families. In almost 20 years of practicing Dermatology, I have been honored to treat entire families, all the way from infantile eczema to young children with warts, older siblings with teenage acne, parents with hair loss or seeking cosmetic maintenance, and grandparents with rashes or skin cancer. I feel very privileged that families trust me to care for them and allow me to be a part of their “medical family”. It’s a thrill for me to see children who I treated for a mole or a rash return after they graduate from college and tell me about their new careers. Maggie: What is your favorite area within dermatology? Kathryn: Honestly, I have a difficult time answering that. Dermatology is ever changing. New discoveries, technologies, and treatments revolutionize how we think about skin care and how we treat patients. When I began working in dermatology, Botox had just been approved and was injected into only a few places. We had collagen fillers that too frequently could cause allergic reactions. Our lasers were the size of a kitchen stove and were limited in their energy output. Now we have new laser, injectable and cosmetic treatments that yield astounding results. Not to mention all the new medications that we have for acne, the “biologics” for psoriasis and eczema, and the modern skin cancer and vein treatments available. It really is hard to choose. The fact that each interaction with patients is so different and the results so meaningful and satisfying whether we are working on a medical, surgical or cosmetic problem means that I have to say I have several favorites.

Maggie: So the fact that dermatology allows you to be so multidimensional is one of the field’s highlights? Kathryn: Exactly! Variety and advances keep me excited about every day. Maggie: What drew you to Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta? Kathryn: Balance. In the first seven years of my dermatology career, I worked in a very busy practice in South Florida where I could not be the well-rounded practitioner I am today. It was a great place to learn a lot about general dermatology and skin cancer and prepared me well in dermatology’s fundamentals, but the expectation to see too many patients in a short period made proper care challenging and spreading my wings difficult. Practicing the last several years at a busy practice in Buckhead, I gained expertise with many of dermatology’s cosmetic services and advanced technologies while staying on top of advances in medical and surgical dermatology. While my professional life was rewarding, the commute was a challenge. One thing we all know about Atlanta is that the traffic can be a battle. I am a Milton resident and have two daughters in local high schools. When the opportunity arose to practice close to home with an excellent physician such as Dr. Taylor, it was too good to pass up. I now enjoy the balance of a dynamic and varied work life and being close to home, with more time to spend with my husband and daughters. Thank you Kathryn for sharing your story with us today. Congratulations on the move, and welcome home!

COVID-19: Safe care from the start at Wellstar Safe care starts before any patient even enters a Wellstar hospital, health park, urgent care center or medical office. Before walking through the doors, patients and team members are met with a thorough screening process to protect the health and safety of everyone inside. From temperature checks to deep cleaning in between patients, the new precautions ensure everyone can get the healthcare they need, safely. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, many Georgians may still be putting their regular medical visits on hold. Wellstar Chief Surgical Officer Dr. William Mayfield addressed the issue and explained how Wellstar is protecting patients. “While you may have postponed a summer vacation or missed a special event, healthcare shouldn’t be part of your canceled plans,” Dr. Mayfield said. “Healthcare visits can often catch more serious conditions early and help improve your overall well-being and quality of life.” “During this time, getting medical treatment is safe and should be top on your priority list,” Dr. Mayfield continued. “For the safety of all of our patients and visitors, we’ve taken extra steps to protect your health such as wearing personal protective equipment, conducting temperature checks for team members and patients, and keeping COVID-19 patients secure.” As Wellstar welcomes patients to all facilities, strict safety measures are in place to keep you and your family safe. From everyday concerns to emergency services, an expert medical team is ready to handle all of your health needs COVID-19 or otherwise. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, extra precautions have been put in place at Wellstar facilities to ensure the

safety of patients and team members: • Patients with COVID-19 are separated from the rest of the general patient population. • Wellstar has updated its visitor policy to limit visitation, although from time to time changes may be made to the policy. For the most updated information about visitation, please visit wellstar.org/COVID-19. • Wellstar ensures each person coming into a Wellstar facility will have their temperature checked and will be asked about their potential COVID-19 exposure. • Likewise, every team member entering a Wellstar facility will have their temperature checked. • Wellstar asks each visitor or patient to bring a mask for their protection and to conserve PPE for healthcare team members. • Wellstar observes all social distancing guidelines. • If a person wishing to enter a Wellstar facility has symptoms consistent with respiratory illness, they will be provided a separate location to wait for treatment. • Wellstar cleans all public areas and sanitizes in between each patient’s treatment with an approved cleaning product that protects against potential COVID-19 spread. • All Wellstar team members who meet with patients will wear appropriate PPE for their, and the patient’s, safety. Across Wellstar Health System, all locations are open and ready to provide safe primary care, specialty medicine, diagnostic services, procedures and surgeries to individuals and families throughout the Atlanta area and beyond. Coury returns to Pinecrest Academy to lead football team By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Shawn Coury has returned to Pinecrest Academy and will serve as head football coach for the 2020 season and take over as athletic director. Coury was a member of the Paladins’ coaching staff from 2007 to 2011 and was with the school until 2016. “To have the opportunity to come back and lead the team and be a part of this school again is very exciting,” Coury COURY said. “It’s like coming home for me. There are a lot of people I know and love in the community.” His familiarity with the school and football program has already been beneficial. “Sometimes you go into a head coaching situation where you are unfamiliar with the community, and you just spend weeks and weeks building relationships from scratch,” Coury said. “In this sense, there is some of that because

there are new families, but it eases a transition a bit because I know families and the faculty.” Coury returns to Pinecrest after serving as an assistant coach at Cherokee in 2019. He was the head coach for Holy Spirit Prep, a Georgia Independent School Association member, for the 2016 and 2017 seasons where he compiled a 4-16 overall record. Other coaching changes could be coming for the Paladins with Coury at the helm. “I am a firm believer in hiring guys you can trust and trusting them to do their job,” Coury said. Pinecrest revamped its offensive scheme from running the triple-option to a more pro-style offense under former head coach Terence Mathis. Coury said he has an idea of what schemes he would like to run, but they are contingent on the skillsets of his players. And with the ongoing pandemic, he has yet to see his players’ attributes in person over the summer. To make do, Coury is sending his players weekly workouts and has met with most of his players and their fami-

lies through virtual meetings. “It’s a tough situation, and I wish I could meet the boys and their parents face to face, but we just have to adapt,” he said. “But is was cool, I was able to spend about 15-20 minutes with each family.” Coury is inheriting a program that has struggled in recent years. But every season ushers in new prospects. “We have a great opportunity in front of us.” Coury said. “It’s a great opportunity to come out of a unique situation in the spring and get back to work in the summer.
