Johns Creek pushes forward Feel Beautiful Today – with McGinnis Honors Healthcare Heroes in Atlanta Ferry funding The organization will provide 300 “thank you” lunches to healthcare workers. PAID ADVERTISEMENT
By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Improvements to a major east-west corridor moved closer to the starting gate Aug. 10 when Johns Creek officials advanced plans to add two lanes to a 5-mile stretch of McGinnis Ferry Road. At its bimonthly work session at City Hall, Johns Creek City Council members agreed to push forward a measure that calls for additional funding for the project. Formal adoption is set for consideration possibly later this month. It’s a major step for a road project that has languished for more than five years as cost estimates have ballooned. Originally estimated at around $35 million, widening 4.7 miles of McGinnis Ferry Road from Sargent Road in Johns Creek to Union Hill Road in Alpharetta now carries a projected price tag of $60 million. Each city shares about 2.3 miles of the stretch with Forsyth County on the north. Both Johns Creek and Alpharetta originally committed $4.9 million from transportation sales tax (TSPLOST) funds back in 2016. Earlier this year, they upped their contributions to $5.9 million. The new agreement increases each city’s contribution to $8.9 million. Forsyth County, which originally pledged $18 million when the project was first proposed in 2015, has upped its share to $23 million. The state plans to kick in almost $20 million. The project is of major significance to GDOT because it is already underway with projects to add McGinnis Ferry exits

Forsyth Schools open with 1 in 3 virtual students K-5 virtual program has high expectations By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY – The Forsyth County School System resumed the 2020-21 school year Aug. 13 with more than five times the number of students taking virtual classes than chose the option last year. Last year Forsyth Schools had approximately 2,000 students taking fullor part-time virtual classes. This year the number grew to nearly 11,000, with about three-quarters fully virtual. The number of virtual learners was highest in elementary grades. The continuation of education under the threat of COVID-19 challenged district leaders as they worked to develop plans and schedules for constantly shifting numbers. Some students may not have set schedules in the first few weeks of school as the district firms up the numbers of students in school and virtually. During an Aug. 11 meeting of the Board of Education, members got an update on the challenges facing schools this year. Lee Ann Rice, director of assessment and accountability, said middle and high school students had until July 31 to opt for in-person or virtual classes. However, the numbers of parents requesting virtual learning continued to come in well after the deadline. “Many parents have reached out saying they missed the deadline or saw [recent] news and they are fearful,” Rice said. “As much as they can [school ad-

Big Creek Elementary School In Cumming welcomed back students on Aug. 13. ministrators] are trying to accommodate them.” Master schedules created over the summer had to be constantly revised as numbers changed and as staff and resources were shifted. “It’s definitely been a huge challenge, and we are happy to try and accommodate [these requests] because we know there are trying times,” Superintendent Jeff Bearden said. “[But] we are asking for grace and flexibility and understanding from our parents and community.” He noted it could be a couple of weeks to iron out the logistics of student schedules and transportation. Rice also briefed the board on the emphasis on virtual learning for elemen-
tary school students this school year. Last March, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced all students to learn remotely, gaps were evident in the instruction for elementary-aged students. The school district had an existing 6-12 virtual option but scrambled to ensure learning continued for its younger learners. Rice said the directive from Bearden back in May was to create a viable K-5 virtual option that met the needs of younger students by August. “[In May] we did not know what this year would bring, but we were going to make sure we had a virtual option for our families,” Rice said. The result of weeks of hard work is a “brand new program,” Rice said,
centered around clarity, communication and engagement. These were items cited as lacking in the virtual delivery for K-5 students last spring, according to a survey of parents. Rice said teachers will be fully engaged with their young learners with frequent facetime and interaction. Parents and guardians will be expected to serve as learning coaches to keep the students on task. Bearden said the development of a full K-12 virtual program was a goal the district had for some time, but never quite accomplished. “Challenge creates opportunity, and this [pandemic] forced our hand…ready or not, we had to make this happen,” Bearden said. “I know we are building something that will serve this district well for many years to come.”
Forsyth County assesses government services amid COVID By RAY APPEN ray@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — County department heads took turns Aug. 12 presenting county commissioners with an assessment of how they have been operating through the COVID-19 pandemic. The review focused on examining how the pandemic has affected productivity, quality control, employee safety and public access to services. Most department heads were able to compare productivity of their departments for the first four or five months of 2020, with the same months of 2019 in a wide array of quantifiable areas, such as the number of customers served, the number of permits issued, amount of
funds collected. Additional criteria brought up at the commission work session included how accessible the offices were to the public and public satisfaction with services. With few exceptions, department heads reported that productivity, efficiency and customer satisfaction were running equal to or exceeding the previous year. The department heads attributed much of the success to a combination of factors that have been implemented by the county, including the use of virtual meetings and interactions with each other as well as with the public via Zoom, use of the app Waitwhile, the elimination of most cash payments for services in favor of online transactions, upgraded software, and the forwarding of calls to staff cell phones when they were off site.
The department heads also commented on the number of their staff who were working virtually — from home or otherwise outside their offices— versus those who continued to work inside the administrative building. With the exception of the IT/GIS Department where all employees were working remotely, the majority of departments continued to staff their offices in person. Building and Economic Development, with 38 employees had only three working remotely. Engineering, with 105 employees reported 11 working remotely, and Business Licenses, with five employees, maintained three in the office at all times. Across the board, department heads all seemed to report similar observa-
tions: increased productivity because of fewer distractions and more online functionality, faster access and fewer lines for the public because of the Waitwhile app, the conversion of many hard copy forms to digital, and more streamlined procedures with the increased use of email, phone and virtual meetings. Commissioners discussed bringing on new employees into a more virtual environment versus the traditional system, but most said that at least initially person-to-person contact and interactions were going to be necessary. Commission Chair Laura Semanson asked department heads if the new processes and procedures might allow their departments to operate with fewer staff, but there was not an overwhelming response in support of the idea.

Cumming cancels fair CUMMING, Ga. — The City of Cumming has elected to cancel the 2020 Cumming Country Fair & Festival which was scheduled for Oct. 8-18. This marks the first time in the fair’s 26-year history that the event has been cancelled. “This was, of course, a very tough decision to make because we know how much the Cumming Country Fair & Festival is loved by our community,” Mayor Troy Brumbalow said. “But given the ongoing public health situation surrounding COVID-19, we simply could not in good conscience hold this large-scale event this year.” Brumbalow said the city is working on a “drive-thru” and walk-up service for patrons to purchase fair foods on the nights the fair was originally scheduled
Road: Continued from Page 3 off I-85 in Gwinnett County and farther west on Ga. 400 that will make the corridor even more inviting for commuters. Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker said having a major east-west corridor at the northern edge of the city could divert a tremendous amount of traffic now tying up major arteries farther south. “I think it’s important that we keep this moving forward, and I hope you will support it,” Bodker told the council. City Councilman Lenny Zaprowski said that while he appreciates the significance of the project, he was still not clear how a 5-mile project can nearly double in cost from its original estimates over five years. Brian O’Connor, the city’s TSPLOST manager, said original estimates were made in 2016, based on a generally accepted estimate for lane additions of about $6 million per mile. But the estimates failed to consider two bridges
to take place. More information will be shared on the City of Cumming’s Facebook page in the coming weeks. Some other Fairgrounds’ fall events are currently still scheduled to be held, such as the IPRA World Championship Rodeo over Labor Day Weekend and the American Cancer Society’s House of Four Scythes haunted attraction in October. These events are smaller in scale, allowing organizers to more easily monitor patrons to ensure current Georgia COVID-19 safety guidelines are practiced. However, the fair’s high attendance numbers combined with other concerns such as an inability to properly disinfect numerous highly touched surfaces and communal spaces, led city leaders to cancel the Cumming Country Fair & Festival for 2020. along the route that will require widening, and the estimates for right of way acquisitions were woefully low, he said. “This corridor is vital to improving traffic congestion in the city, and we cannot complete this project without our partners in GDOT, Forsyth and Alpharetta,” O’Connor said. Alpharetta approved the agreement July 20. Forsyth County has yet to formally adopt the pact, but county commissioners gave a preliminary nod at their work session Aug. 11. O’Connor also told council members that the city’s extra share could be made up through a $1 million grant from the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank and by transferring another $2 million from other TSPLOST projects. That does not include a possible $1 million in extra expense for sound abatement measures for Johns Creek neighborhoods affected by the increased traffic. Construction on the first phases of the project – in Johns Creek that’s from Seven Oaks to Sargent Road – is expected to begin early in 2021, O’Connor said.

The whole gist of the organization is to help people achieve through effective evaluations with whatever they’re doing. SCOTT HOEHN, CHAT Toastmasters vice president for membership 8 | Forsyth Herald | August 20, 2020
Here’s to adapting your entire meeting platform Toastmasters adapts to new online forum By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — You’ve got to hand it to those who turn lemons into lemonade. CHAT Toastmasters of Alpharetta faced some pretty yellow fruit when the pandemic struck this spring, forcing them to cancel in-person meetings. So, how do you practice public speaking, much less draw a good laugh, with no audience in front of you? You get good online. “The whole gist of the organization is to help people achieve through effective evaluations with whatever they’re doing,” said Scott Hoehn, CHAT Toastmasters vice president for membership. “It’s in all the Fortune 500 companies now. The Coca Cola club, The Sparkling Speakers is the name of their club. They find that it’s really built for leadership now.” While not limited to business professionals, Toastmasters draws its share of members from the corporate world, businesses that promote effective speaking skills among their employees. There are close to two dozen Toastmasters chapters in north Metro Atlanta, each with from 15 to 50 members. In a typical meeting, there are two or three assigned speakers who give short, five to seven-minute talks on any subject they choose, following the guidance of the many program materials provided by Toastmasters International. Those programs range from humorous talks, speeches to inform, persuade, entertain, motivate and more.
SPECIAL
Members of CHAT Toastmasters in Alpharetta listen to a presentation at a club meeting held in February at Serendipity Labs. The group has switched to online meetings in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. After the talk, the speaker receives a short evaluation, stressing the strengths they have as well as a thought or two on how they might improve. Some members say their club gives them a “bomb-shelter” where they can try out new material, say a sales pitch, before presenting it to their company or a client “Aside from building self-confidence, it helps them in their community roles,” said Hoehn, who is a past district gover-
nor for the organization. CHAT Toastmasters President Christian Dixon said she was urged by her employer, Nielsen, to join the club. She brought on co-worker Madelyn Michels later. “Our company actually believes in it since we’re both in sales-oriented or client-service roles,” Dixon said. The skills learned and honed through Toastmasters, she said, are even more
important now that the business world has turned to online meetings. The same communication skills needed to succeed online can only be enhanced with the kind of coaching you receive from Toastmasters brethren, she said. “Now, we’re really understanding how to use the camera better, hand expressions and where to look,” Dixon said. “Working on some of the skills have really helped us all.” Michels agreed the lessons learned in public speaking have helped her career. “I participated in one meeting, and I just fell in love,” she said. “I always was very conscious of how I spoke to people, especially when I landed this new role at Nielsen. I was very conscious of how I talked to clients.” Now, she said, she speaks with more confidence. The club has sharpened her skills in reading people, grammar usage and pronunciation. As far as humor, Hoehn seems to be the critics’ choice. In his last talk, he applied a screen background that put him aboard a commuter bus. He even raised an arm to mimic holding onto a strap. Daniel Schwartz, public relations director for CHAT Toastmasters, said it’s easy to join any club. He suggests going to the toastmasters.org website to find a nearby location that seems to fit your interests. Fees are around $50 for six months, he said. “You can try out as many clubs as you wish,” he said. In normal times, CHAT Toastmasters meets at Serindipity Labs on North Point Center East. Meetings are now held on Zoom. For more information about CHAT Toastmasters, email CHATAlpharetta@ gmail.com.

Community funds new FurKids van to honor late racer Van honors volunteer killed in auto accident By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — FurKids’ new van will be significant for many, for those with four legs transported from kill shelters to the organization’s new headquarters off Union Hill Road, for all the people who care for and adopt those new companions. Emblazoned on the sides of this new van is the smiling face of Milton’s Sara Edge, a promising, 20-year-old race car driver and volunteer at the shelter who was killed in a traffic accident last year. Coming from a family of racers, Edge was a rising force on the Porsche GT4 Clubsport racing circuit and had begun making her mark in the Mazda Miata Club Spec series. While not at the racetrack, she spent her time volunteering at FurKids, eventually adopting her own dog, Obi, along with her fiancé. She was described as having a “larger than life” personality and lifted the spirits of those around her, but her life was sadly cut short. On Sept. 11, 2019, Edge was driving home from her job at Discovery Parts at Atlanta Motorsports Park and was involved in a head-on collision that killed her. Out of the tragic death, Edge’s family concluded a great way to honor her memory was to have those bereaved donate to FurKids No Kill Animal Shelter, a cause

She said the group’s van had broken down and was beyond repair. Shelton asked the Edge family if they could use the donations to fund a new van that would honor Sara and got the greenlight. On Aug. 10, Edge’s family and FurKids staff gathered at their new shelter to dedicate the van in Sara’s memory with photos of her smiling in her fire suit on each side and her racing number, No. 99, adorning the rear doors. “We absolutely love it,” J.D. said. “I’m absolutely thrilled to see her face up there. I love that smile.”
Shelton said the outpouring of support to fund the van was “greater than we have ever seen,” and added the van has already helped save dozens of animals from kill shelters. “She was a lovely young lady, it’s sad that she was taken from us so early,” she said. “She loved dogs and loved FurKids, so it’s a wonderful way to remember her and honor her. It makes me feel proud to be able to honor her life and continue doing the work she loved being a part of. Just to be able to continue her legacy and to show other people, don’t forget her.”
