Therapist charged with improper sexual contact

By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An Alpharetta pro fessional counselor is accused of having intimate relationships with at least three of her male clients while they were in therapy or shortly thereafter. Mary Katheryn Dennis, 51, was ar rested Aug. 4 and charged with a felony count of improper sexual contact by an employee or agent in the first degree. Jail records indicate the offense may have occurred in December 2019. Dennis, who is also listed as Mary Katherine, made her first court appear ance Aug. 5. A Fulton County Superior Court judge granted her a $75,000 surety bond and she was released that same day. At the time of her arrest, she was working at New Era Healthcare in Al pharetta.According to the Licensing Division of the Georgia Secretary of State’s Of fice, Dennis’ license as a professional counselor was suspended Aug. 12 after the board received a complaint alleg ing numerous counts of unprofessional contact in June 2021 with respect to her therapeutic treatment and services.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A former For syth County Kroger employee has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $112,000 using the store’s credit card refund transaction system. Sheriff’s deputies responded to the grocery store on Bethelview Road in Forsyth County on Aug. 9 and were told that the employee had stolen $112,882.74 in three fraudulent trans actions on different dates. The suspect allegedly used his posi tion overseeing the store’s cashier and self-checkout areas to steal the money, initiating large refund transactions to his own debit card. During an interview with store management, the man alleg edly admitted to taking the money, the incident report states.

Cumming woman arrested for check forgery, fraud FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A Cumming resident who allegedly stole $115,000 from an Alpharetta business has been arrested by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.Owners of the Zero Odor chemi cal company in Alpharetta reported to Forsyth County authorities on Feb. 25, that a former employee had been ac cused of forging checks in the company owners name and had stolen more than $115,000 over a span of three years.

Records show Dennis’ license was issued in November 2020 and was set to expire in September. She was issued a license to practice as an associate pro fessional counselor in December 2016.

But, sometime around February 2017 and 2020, it is alleged that Dennis committed “multiple boundary violations and engaged in harmful dual relation ships” with one of her clients by allowing him to visit her family home, move in with her for an extended period of time for “life therapy” and providing him with controlled substances that were not pre scribed to him. It is also alleged that Dennis may have hired her client to work in her of fice as an intern while he was in therapy and routinely socialized with his family.

Beginning in 2019, the former em ployee, later identified as a 42-year-old Cumming woman, allegedly used more than 60 fraudulent checks to withdraw money from the company’s bank ac counts. The employee was only able to provide expense reimbursement docu ments for one check written in 2021. The business owner told investigators that the employee did not have approval to purchase supplies for the company and was never required to purchase supplies out of her own pocket. The woman was arrested by the sher iff’s office on Aug. 11 for identity fraud, forgery and theft by taking.

The Georgia Composite Board of Professional Counselors, Social Work ers and Marriage and Family Therapists states it received allegations from an other client in June 2021, who indicated that they had done similar things and that their relationship had lasted until JanuaryThen,2022.inMarch, a third client came forward, alleging that Dennis had picked him up from school and allowed him to stay in her home. A warrant for Dennis’ arrest in con nection to the first victim’s allegations was issued Aug. 2. Court records state that same client filed a complaint for damages in Fulton County Superior Court against Dennis and Simplicity Wellness in Alpharetta in November 2020, but the case was dismissed less than a year later. In the Aug. 12 summary detailing the reasoning behind the suspension of Dennis’ license, the board states an appointed peer reviewer determined her conduct fell below the minimal standards of acceptable and prevailing practice.“Specifically, the peer reviewer deter mined, in part, that Respondent (Den nis), during the course of her therapeu tic relationships referenced above, not only committed numerous boundary violations but also encouraged and par ticipated in harmful dual relationships with respect to clients … as well as their respective families,” it states. Dennis could not be reached for com ment.

Almost 200 people celebrated in front of the historic white clapboard church Saturday afternoon. Members and friends gathered under a white canopy where The Band Jubilee performed. The band, consisting of Buggay family mem bers, used guitar, mandolin, harp, up right bass and banjo to play bluegrass, gospel and Celtic stylings. Off to the side, barbecue and desserts were served as well as “world famous” Brunswick stew, a classic Southern barbecue dish.

Thacker talked about a greeter at Ebenezer, Sandy Calbeck, who sat with her at her first after-church supper. Calbeck, dressed in an identical light blue Ebenezer volunteer shirt, said that at every service she gets the names of newcomers, goes home, puts them in her calendar and makes sure to call them by their first name when she sees them again.“You walk in, and it feels like you’ve been there forever,” Thacker said. In unison, Thacker and Calbeck voiced their excitement Aug. 13 at a groundbreaking event for a new 23,000-square-foot community and multi-purpose center across from the church at the corner of Ga. 140 and Cox Road in Roswell. The building, to be named the Pardue Family Foundation Center, was funded by Dwight Pardue Jr., a member of the church since 2014 and founder of the Pardue Family Foun dation.Ebenezer Methodist was established in 1853 and sits on 1 acre, but church leaders say they think the expansion on the adjacent 5-acre site will bring in more of the community. Plans call for completion of the facility in 2024. Pardue established the foundation in memory of his father and said that the primary reason for starting it was to fund Ebenezer’s new project. His parents were churchgoers for as long as he can remember.“Ithink it’s something my family would have been very proud of,” Pardue said.Traditional services will still be held in the church, but a contemporary service will be held in the new space, Calbeck said. She also spoke about the potential of a coffee shop and daycare.

ROSWELL, Ga. — It was seven years ago when Sharon Thacker found Ebenezer Methodist Church. “I used to drive by and see this little white church on the corner and thought to myself, ‘One day I’m gonna go in there,’” Thacker said. “Then one day I did, and I never left.”

“Oh, we’re all ready,” Calbeck said.

Historic church expands with ‘state-of-the-art’ facility

Before the groundbreaking, Pas tor Glenn Hannigan and Pardue took turns on stage to talk about the project’s timeline and vision and to give thanks to those who helped with the project.

To pay homage to Milton’s farmstead origins, church staff wanted the building designed with rustic charm. The plan was for the facility to resemble Scotts dale Farms in Alpharetta, Elkins said. Elkins described the facility’s ac commodating features, like the top floor which was designed without columns to host activities like kids’ basketball, din ners and weddings.

shing up what his predecessor, Pas tor Jack Pilger, started. Hannigan has been Ebenezer’s pastor since 2010. He had earlier served as sports editor for the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The Rev. Charles “Chuck” Savage of Sardis Church in Atlanta consecrated the “Consecrationgrounds. means that we set something aside for a specific purpose,” Savage said. “The purpose that this is being set aside for is so that God’s word will go out into this community.”

The plan for the facility is for it to stand as an invitation to the commu nity, extending past the average Sunday serviceHanniganattendee.talked about holding weekly bluegrass and gospel nights, youth-oriented nights, open mic nights and community theater. For Hannigan, the potential is endless.

For the ceremony, architectural designer Regie Elkins, benefactor Dwight Pardue, lay person Craig Crouch and Susan Dunphy, Pilger’s daughter, threw dirt using golden shovels.

“What can we do to attract the people that don’t come here now?” Hannigan asked.

He also spoke of the importance of flow between the building’s inside and outside spaces, so that large activities could easily be opened to the exterior. The outside amphitheater helps to ad vance that flow, Elkins said.

“The goal of this was for the facility to be a community activity center, not an Ebenezer activity center.”

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County leaders cut the ribbon on a new area of Eagle’s Beak Park Aug. 18, a project that celebrates the history of the northern part of the county. Eagle’s Beak Park, which sits off Old Federal Road in northwest Forsyth County, has long been a hive of activity in the community. The park had already offered boat launches for canoes and kayakers to float down the Etowah River and a giant 12-acre field that has been a favorite of model airplane enthusiasts. The expansion provides a whole new range of activities and amenities, with trails, river overlooks, picknick pavilions, a new playground modeled after the lo cal community, and educational signage on the history of the surrounding north Forsyth County area.

Park expansion celebrates history, community

By ALEXANDER POPP alex@appenmedia.com

“Eagle’s Beak Park is a special place that tells a story about the history that was made here and the beautiful open green space on the Etowah River,” Can non said. “Citizens will enjoy this park for years to come.” Eagle’s Beak Park was one of 14 projects selected for the inaugural year of the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Pro gram Grant and required a 25 percent funding match from the county. Due to the park’s proximity to the local landfill, the county was able to use the Landfill Host Fee Development Fund to secure the grant and give back to the community in a way that will last for generations, District 4 Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills said. “Being able to use hosts fees with that (Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program) grant, is just such a blessing.” Mills said. “It would have never hap pened had all those things, the timing, everything had fell just perfectly into place.”Mills said that out of all the new amenities at the park, possibly most important is the park’s new emphasis on celebrating local history. Kids in the community need to learn about the people that once lived in the area and remember their contributions on the world today. But even more im portant, she said, the community needs to be reminded of the indigenous people who were forced off their land and onto the Trail of Tears.

HENRY JUNG, co-founder, Olympic Fencers Club

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The students at Olympic Fencers Club say what keeps them practicing the sport is the fun community around them. But, working with Olympians and winning regional and national champi onships helps too. Fencing is a sport derived from duel ing, played by two opponents on a strip or ‘piste’ 2 meters by 12 meters long. The goal is to score ‘hits’ or ‘touches’ on an opponent. The first player to score a given number of hits – usually between five and 15 – wins the bout. The three disciplines in modern fencing are foil, épée and sabre. In 2010, coaches Henry Jung and Annie Lee opened Olympic Fencers Club on Medlock Bridge Road in Johns Creek after moving to the U.S. from Korea five years earlier. Since then, it has been ranked the No. 1 club in the U.S. Fenc ing: Georgia Division for seven consecu tive years. It has approximately 220 students.Backin Korea, Jung and Annie met while competing on teams at the Korean National Sports University. Jung was a swimmer and Annie a fencer. Annie’s father, Kun Bae Lee, was a professor at the school and served as the head coach for the Korean national fencing team for 15 years. He has received numerous awards over the years for his critical role in the development of Korean style fencing.Infact, Korea has grown into a fenc ing powerhouse, having won five gold medals, three silver and eight bronze in Olympic fencing. It is tied with China as the Asian country with the most gold medals. Kung Bae and Korean Olym pic fencers visit Olympic Fencers Club throughout the year to work with the students, which they say is an invalu ableWhileexperience.Jungdidn’t start out as a fencer, he said he learned from his father-in-law. In 2013, when he be gan teaching, he honed his skills by practicing with his students. Jung and Annie have coached at Lambert, South Forsyth and Peachtree Ridge high schools and continue to coach at Mill Creek, Denmark and Alpharetta high schools.Jung said there are two high school leagues in Georgia, with the Georgia High School Fencing League the most popular in Fulton County and Onguard High School Fencing League taking precedence in Gwinnett County. Brought to you by – Brent Taylor, MD One of the most common questions that patients ask before Mohs surgery is how the surgeon knows the depth to cut. Mohs surgery is a method for cur ing skin cancer that involves removing tissue in layers. But how does the Mohs surgeon know how much to remove each time? The answer to that question has layers of its own. Mohs surgery is performed on many different locations on the body, so the answer to how deep to cut varies by location. If a cancer is the size of a plum and on someone’s back, then the Mohs surgeon’s first stage will be cut as a relatively thick layer. In contrast, if the skin cancer is on the edge of someone’s eyelid, then the Mohs surgeon will cut a very thin layer of tissue – often only a millimeter thick on each side of the tumor – in order to preserve as much healthy eyelid as possible. The details on the biopsy report influence the depth of cancer resection. Some basal cell carcinomas are char acterized as “superficial type.” These cancers usually grow on the surface like moss on a tree, and deep cutting is often unnecessary. For other tumors, the pathologist may say the “deep margin” is involved. This means that the cancer went to the bottom of the biopsy. The Mohs surgeon cuts deeper on the first layer to ensure a level below the biopsy’s depth.Sometimes, the surgeon can even feel the likely thickness of a cancer with (glove-covered) bare hands. Some tumors feel like a thick disk that is growing wide, not deep. Others feel like icebergs with abundant tumor lurking below. One of the most important factors affecting second and subsequent layers is the amount of cancer seen under the microscope. If a tiny spot of cancer is left, then only a small amount of addi tional tissue removal may be necessary. In other cases, strands of cancer are dif fusely visible under the microscope, and the surgeon knows that a substantial next cut is necessary to make progress. Sometimes, when patients ask me how I know how deep to cut, I think that what they are asking is not what was discussed above but rather how I know how deep not to cut. How does the doctor know where the critical nerves or arteries are? The answer to that ques tion is all the years of training focused on anatomy and experience gained dur ing residency, fellowship and in practice.

Mohs surgeons are expected to learn what layers of tissue are present in dif ferent locations and where the “danger zones” of critical nerves or blood vessels are. When a Mohs surgeon anticipates that an important structure is at risk, the Mohs surgeon will generally discuss this with the patient in advance of cut ting and give the patient the opportu nity to weigh the risks and benefits of proceeding.Wehope that this article was helpful and interesting. But a word of caution: please remember that this discussion of Mohs surgery is not exhaustive. Do not try this at home!

“We have a comprehensive plan that shows our long-range buildout for the county,” he said. “We’re a very desirable county to live in, and individuals have a reasonable expectation of some sort of an investment backed return on their property.”District 4 Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills, who represents the area where this project will be built, said that while there are similar businesses already in the area, competition is ultimately good for consumers.“Wedon’tget to pick who’s compe tition,” Mills said. “We have to have a balanced level playing field for every body.”

While there was no formal public hearing for the project at the meet ing, resident Laura Graycarek spoke in opposition during the meeting’s public commentGraycareksession.argued against the project because she said it is inconsistent with the surrounding community’s character, and will be unnecessary, because there are other similar services in the area.

Budget approved for 2023 Also at the Aug. 18 meeting, com missioners unanimously approved the county’s $186.1 million budget for 2023, keeping the expenditures and revenues unchanged from the draft that was pre sented in late July.

Georgia is a pro-property rights state, Jarrard said, and Forsyth County has set up a rigorous standard to ensure projects are upholding the highest com munity standards.

“It has grown extremely worrisome that people purchase property that is not zoned for their desired purpose, they confidently assume zoning will be changed to their liking,” she said. “Does this proposal for a gas station and retail convenience business conform with the policy and intent of the adopted For syth County Comprehensive Plan? Yes it does. But do we need a gas station on every corner? No.” Graycarek said projects like the gas station are often approved too quickly for residents to fully give their input and often go against their desire to live in a “restful rural”

“There’s a workforce shortage in all industries and all locations currently,” Head said. “The incentives and pay increases as proposed will go a long way in helping us recruit and retain our staff and continue to be able to provide the services that our citizens have become accustomed to.”

“All of our neighbors, those that we compete with for employees, continue to increase their pay,” he said. All other county employees will receive a 4 percent cost of living adjust ment.Forsyth County Fire Chief Barry Head spoke after Tanner, thanking the board for approving a budget that will support recruiting efforts.

The 2023 Forsyth County Budget, highlighted by County Manager Kevin Tanner, includes funding for 25 new fulltime employees, large salary increases for public safety employees, incentives and retention benefits, and funding for the county’s new administrative campus and employee center. Tanner’s presentation focused mainly on the employee raises. He said that in 2023, all front-line public safety employees, including firefight ers, sheriff’s deputies, emergency responders and 911 dispatchers, will receive a 16 percent salary raise to keep the county in step with sur rounding communities.

Election powers At the end of the meeting’s public comment session, Forsyth County At torney Ken Jarrard spoke to the board about an upcoming directive from his office.Jarrard said residents have made many comments at recent meetings about the security of local elections, voicing the opinion that commissioners should change the system used for elec tions.“This is not the only jurisdiction where requests of that kind are being made,” he said. “Other requests have been made in other counties as well, by citizens in good faith, who are just frustrated with what they believe are concerns, with respect to the integrity of our election process.”

Jarrard said that he is in the process of drafting a legal opinion on what the commissioner’s powers are regarding lo cal elections and election technology. After it is reviewed by the board, that information will be made public, Jarrard said.

After a short discussion, project plans were approved unanimously.

Respondingcommunity.toGraycarek’s com ments and other comments made about upcoming north Forsyth County developments, District 3 Commissioner Todd Levent and County Attorney Ken Jarrard said there are only certain rea sons that commissioners can prevent projects from coming to the commu nity.Jarrard said commissioners can’t make their decisions about a property just because some residents aren’t in favor of it or think it might upset their “quiet rural life.” “If someone in Georgia has figured out the elixir where we’re able to simply shut out any additional development, I’m unaware of it,” he said. “There’s no opportunity to say, ‘no more.’”

CHAMIAN CRUZ/APPEN MEDIA

Aug. 17 at Olympic Fencers Club on Medlock Bridge Road in Johns Creek. The facility opened in 2010 and has been ranked the No. 1 club in the U.S. Fencing: Georgia Division for seven consecutive years.

“We’ve had so many new members of all different ages and interests join since I started, and it’s really inter esting to see them all come together in this one club because we are like a family,” Moon said. “We all support eachJeannieother.”Lee, a senior in college, started fencing when she was in high school and competed in the Junior Olympics. She said she had to stop fencing competitively because her school doesn’t offer NCAA Division 1 fencing, but she still practices at Olympic Fenc ers “FencingClub. is a huge part of me now, because I have done it for a long time and it’s super fun,” Jeannie said. “Be ing in fencing energizes me, gives me motivation and allows me to just keep pushing myself. It all depends on what you want to get out of it. The coaches here will match your needs 100 per cent whether you’re a beginner wanting to have fun and exercise or looking to compete.”At69years old, Dave Aton also takes classes at the facility. He said he was first introduced to the sport as a student at Emory University. Then, in the early 2000s his son started fenc ing at Alpharetta High School, so he figured he should start doing it again because he was already driving him to practice.Atonsaid he loves that fencing is one of the few sports that parents can do with their kids. He said another thing he enjoys is that they can be within 6 to 8 feet of “all the action” at tournaments. Plus, he said, it’s a great form of exer cise.“During the early part of the pan demic, when the club was closed, I was just sitting at home, not getting the same kind of exercise, and I could feel my body slowing down,” Aton said. “I felt five years older. Finally, after almost a year, when I started fencing again, it took four months of fencing, but I got back up to feeling normal.”

John Luke, 74, of Alpharetta, passed away August 10, 2022. Arrangements by Northside Chapel Funeral Directors & Crematory.

Jung said the club closed for about three months in 2020. Until a year ago, not all of their original fencers had come back, but since November of last year, new students have continued to sign up. Jeannie added that she thinks fencing is one of the most “COVIDfriendly” sports, because students wear a mask over their head and are forced to keep a distance between them and their“So,opponent.whileother sports require close contact and you might be scared of doing the sport during the pandemic, I think fencing provides such a good alternative for exercise, and it’s a very clean environment that we keep here,” JeannieOlympicsaid.Fencers Club offers a free beginner class every Friday for all ages, starting at 5 years old. After that, students can join either the beginners class, kids class, or teen and adult class. Rates range from $150 a month for one class a week to $220 a month for unlimited classes, plus a one-time registration fee of $49. Equipment is available to rent. Jung said he and Annie have taught other disciplines, but now they mainly focus on épée, because it is the easi est for volunteers to referee, and it is what’s mostly offered at the local high schools.“I’ma sportsman,” Jung said. “I love this sport. Before I started fencing, I loved to swim and ski, but fencing is to tally different. Swimming is just to try to break my own record. I’m fighting with myself. With fencing, I need a partner and every single opponent is different, so I need a new plan. It’s like chess. We need to focus more than 100 percent, and that is very tiring, but it’s a good feeling.”Hisstudents agree.

Nicole Moon, a junior at Lambert High School, started fencing in middle school, because she saw the sport on a TV show, and it captured her inter est. This year, she is co-captain of her school’s team. However, she said last year was the first time both the women’s and men’s teams at Lambert High won gold, which was a huge accomplishment. She said she owes it all to her coaches, Jung and Annie.
