“Human trafficking is among the most heinous crimes the FBI encoun ters,” said FBI Director Christopher Wray. “Unfortunately, such crimes— against both adults and children—are far more common than most people realize. As we did in this operation, the FBI and our partners will continue to find and arrest traffickers, identify and help victims, and raise awareness of the exploitation of our most vulnerable populations.”

School Board weighs new public comment policy
By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com
The proposed policies come after pas sage of Senate Bill 588, which requires all local school boards in the state to approve public participation rules and regulations annually.AtanAug. 16 board meeting, Jennifer Caracciolo, chief communications officer for Forsyth County Schools, said school boards will have until Oct. 1 to enact a new Rules of Conduct policy.
“So, this will be a very standard policy you will see throughout the entire state,” Bearden said. “I think you’ll see a lot of uniformity around that.” In the past year, public participation has increased, because of controversy over the district’s policies on books containing sexually explicit material. In fact, there were several heated debates last year after the district banned eight books out of more than 500,000 available in its school libraries. While some students and parents raised concerns the books were dispro portionally about characters or written by authors who are LGBTQ+, women and people of color, others have said the board has not been doing enough to “protect the innocence of Forsyth County’s children.”

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Forsyth County Board of Education will consider approving two policies in September dealing with public participation in board meetings and its rules of conduct.
The current rules cited in the lawsuit were not changed in the policy proposed at the Aug. 16 school board meeting. To read the proposed rules of conduct and public participation procedures, visit forsyth.k12.ga.us.Inotherbusiness at the meeting, Forsyth County Schools Chief Financial Officer Larry Hammel said the district currently has a cash balance of $17.3 million for food services, which is higher than normal because of all the money it received last year to provide students with free and reduced lunch.
During public comment at the Aug.
The proposed changes are available on the school district’s website for pub lic feedback before the September board meeting. It includes 10 different rules for public participation, including an addition that the board can limit the time they’re allowed to speak “for the purpose of the efficient operation of the business of the meeting.” Normally, the public is given three minutes to speak. Another change is that “loud and boisterous conduct or comments” will not be allowed. The current policy states speakers should keep remarks to the board “civil” while avoiding “obscene” or “profane” language. Those who violate the proposed policy will be given a warning before being asked to sit down.
The public was allowed to return to the meeting one by one to finish their com ments to the board, but Hair says she left and stopped attending board meetings al together for fear of retaliation. She claims the board sent her two separate letters after the meeting indicating she had been banned from the meetings unless she agreed to submit a statement in writ ing agreeing to follow the board’s public participation rules and McCall’s directives as chairman. Then,inJuly, Hair and a local group known as Mama Bears of Forsyth County filed suit in federal court against the school board on grounds that their First Amendment rights had been violated. Hair accuses the board of seven violations, including to her right of free speech, right to petition, vagueness, overbreadth and priorTherestraint.lawsuit asks the court to issue an order preventing Forsyth County Schools and board officials from enforcing the ban against Hair’s participation in board meet ings and “several unconstitutional provi sions” of its public participation policy.
During one meeting in March, Wes McCall, chairman of the Forsyth County Board of Education, called for a recess after he repeatedly asked Alison Hair, a parent of a former student in the school district, to stop reading sexually explicit excerpts from school library books.
In March 2020, Congress approved the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s child nutrition COVID-19 waivers. The waivers gave schools the funding and flexibility to provide free lunch and breakfast to all school-aged children, re gardless of family income. That program ended June 2022, so families must once again pay for their children’s meals or ap ply for free and reduced lunch. Hammel said about 15.96 percent of students in the district have signed up for the program so far this year. Schools send meal applications home at the beginning of each school year. However, parents may apply for school meals at any time throughout the school year by submitting a household application directly to the school. School officials said sales have already been higher than before the COVID-19 pandemic started, possibly because students and parents enjoy the service. Bearden said that while there was some confusion the first couple days after school started, the schools are trying to make sure that “eligible people have the opportunity to apply for free or reduced services if they meet that income criteria.”Thenext Forsyth County Board of Education meeting is Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 6 p.m. at the Board of Educa tion/Professional Development Center in Cumming.
“We will continue to monitor how challenged books are handled in compli ance with state law and we are pleased that the new law limits challenges to par ents of a student in a school where the challenge is being made,” she continued.
Superintendent Jeff Bearden said the proposed policy was written by the board’s attorney in consultation with the Georgia School Boards Association.
16 school board meeting, Patricia Wall, a board member of the Forsyth Coalition for Education and former librarian, said she does not feel like her First Amendment rights have been violated and that the rules set by the board apply unilaterally.

Jennifer Caracciolo, chief communications officer for Forsyth County Schools, tells School Board members Aug. 16 the dis trict has until Oct. 1 to enact a new Rules of Conduct policy for public participation at meetings.
“If any person attending a meeting refuses to follow these rules disrupting the meeting, they will be asked to leave and if they refuse, be escorted from the meeting room,” it states. “Such serious or repeated violations of the rules of conduct may result in the individual being prohibited from speaking during a board meeting for an appropriate period of time.”
“When we suggest to parents who op pose these freedoms that they engage in conversations with their children about reading choices that align with their fam ily’s values, their response is often that their children will just do the opposite anyway,” Wall said. “Well, how is it that our children’s intellectual freedoms are held hostage by their poor parenting?”

Underwood said the project is designed as an age restricted “urban village” com munity, with commercial offices in the front half of the development and resi dences at the back half.

Johns Creek Police used to have a part-time clinician.
In 2020, the city approved a partner ship with Behavioral Healthcare Link to provide the part-time clinician to work alongside Johns Creek police. The partnership formed the Clinician Officer Response Team. But, because Behavioral Healthcare Link was experiencing staffing issues, the clinician was frequently in and out of the office, according to statements provided in the 2023 budget draft.
The proposed full-time role will exist to act as a liaison between the city and various social service agencies, providing follow-up and monitoring of cases upon request from department members or from cases referred to police from other sources, according to the budget draft.
Officer training Alpharetta Police Public Information Officer David Freeman said the depart ment has been researching all aspects of a new co-responder program. While the department doesn’t have a co-responder team, Freeman said that over 40 percent of the force are Crisis Intervention Team trained and that the number continues to grow.Meanwhile in Sandy Springs, police spokesman Sgt. Matthew McGinnis said the department hasn’t found the right partnership for a co-responder team. But, it is researching different approaches, he said.If co-responder teams haven’t been established, police can use Georgia’s new Mental Health Parity Act that went into effect July 1. The act allows officers to take people into protective custody for a mental health evaluation without the need for criminal charges. Before the act was passed, officers couldn’t take people into treatment without some violation of the law.Officers also have access to Mobile Crisis Services, a program available at all hours administered through the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health & Devel opmental Disabilities.
Milton Police Chief Rich Austin stated he’s used the program for a handful of mental health-related calls. But, he said that the program isn’t a viable option for immediate safety concerns because its average response time is within an hour.
The City Council will consider the bud get for adoption on Sept. 12.
“This has raised the agency’s proficien cy level as a whole,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote in an email. It said it has seen a reduction in certain categories of mental health flagged inmates by half.

“We’ve had nothing but positive feedback from this event in previous years,” Franz said. “And with our home town Atlanta Braves playing well and fighting to win the division, our baseball community has a lot to be excited about.”This year was no different with dozens of children in attendance showing up to participate. Ocee Park is located on 10900 Buice Road. To learn more about the event, contact Franz at kirk.franz@johnnscreek.ga.gov or call 678-512-3261. For upcoming local events, visit www. johnscreek.ga.gov.
The hour-long free event is for children of all ages and is designed to focus on the fun nature of baseball while encouraging an active and healthy lifestyle for kids. During their hour on the field, kids enjoyed alternat ing between hitting and catching exercises with visits from former Atlanta Braves outfielder Terry Harper and Gwinnett Braves Mascot Chopper. This was followed by a quick whiffle ball game, with each participant offered the chance to hit a ball pitched by Harper himself. Each child also received a free T-shirt and a goodie bag filled with treats and baseball cards.
Johns Creek first introduced the event in 2016 after having learned about it through the U.S. Conference of Mayors. The city added it to the recreation schedule to celebrate baseball and softball as a youth activity. The youth baseball program is run by volunteers of the Ocee Park Athletic Association (OPAA). Assisting with each of the exercises and activities are current baseball players from Chattahoochee High School. Play Ball is a collaborative initiative between Major League Baseball and USA Baseball focused on exposing children to baseball and softball while providing a way to remain active during the summer. Play Ball also hosts educational online resources for coaches, umpires, par ents and players. To learn more about the organization, visit their website at www.playball.org.

CUMMING, Ga. — Massage is often seen as a spa ordeal, a luxury, a superfluous form of self-care. To the three owners of Sixth Sense Massage & Bodywork, mas sage therapy is health care.
Sixth Sense Massage & Bodywork officially opened its doors Aug. 1. From left are co-owners Kevin Morgan-Shaffer, Sarah Howell and Bradlee Morgan-Shaffer. Howell holds a plant gifted by a client.
Bradlee Morgan-Shaffer, his husband Kevin, and Sarah Howell are all licensed massage therapists and value a holis tic, client-centered approach. Using the myriad techniques they’ve learned, they select what’s appropriate and fashion them into a unique and dynamic plan of care for Bradleeclients.said he collaborates with his co-workers on what diagnoses is best suited for his clients, asking himself about the potential pathologies first. If Sixth Sense staff can’t come to any con clusions on their own, they refer out to otherAfterexperts.acquiring all the necessary busi ness licenses in late July of this year, Sixth Sense officially opened Aug. 1. The owners obtained required licensing by July 17, to be exact, which is a special date for Bradlee. Last year, coincidentally on the same day, he ran a poll on differ ent logo options. The year before that he, also coincidentally, ran a poll on busi ness names. Sixth Sense has been in the works for a while. “I feel like everything aligns whenever it’s supposed to,” Bradlee said. Things fell into place, but not without what seemed to be an uphill battle for Sixth Sense, whether that was funding, an abundance of red tape or misconcep tions about massage therapy. Massage therapists are still lobbying to be recognized, Bradlee said. Therapists have had the option to obtain National Identifier Numbers (NPI) since 2007, a number that allows health care provid ers to receive insurance payments, thus opening the door for more clients.

Yet, there’s still grief. “Right now, there’s a very small num ber of insurance companies that actu ally view massage therapy as a medical practice,” Kevin said. Even with NPIs, Sixth Sense is fight ing hard for clients to eventually use insurance as payment. At Sixth Sense, massage therapy is more than just massage itself. Staff incorporates other strategies to expand means of care, which involves the initial in-depth conversation, assessment, plan of care and reassessments after each session. On average, the plan of care will contain 5-7 sessions. But that range could be more or less, depending on the individual.“Theplan of care is a map,” Bradlee said. “You can take the scenic route, or you can take direct A to B. I have some clients that are going directly from A to B, and they are seeing results.” A big part of massage therapy is hold ing space for clients, Bradlee said. “Some just need to come in and de compress,” he said. “Then there’s other times when I have clients that talk to relax.”With some clients, conversation is necessary for more “involved” therapeutic work, he said. With this kind of work, therapists will place their hands some where on the body and ask the client how the placement feels. “The body tells on you,” Bradlee said. Coliene Belle is one of Bradlee’s clients. Her job as a photographer has added to lower back pain. In the few sessions that she’s had, pain has sub stantially subsided, she said. Belle talked

Each therapist has their own strengths, whether it be Bradlee’s focus on intuition and the spiritual, energetic underpinnings of massage, Kevin’s pref erence for deep tissue work and increas ing range of motion or Howell’s knack for tailoring to clients, using knowledge developed over her eight years of massage therapy experience. Days before Chief of Administration Shane Dobson is set to join the Roswell Fire Department, retired Battalion Chief Edwin Vickery is now suing the City of Roswell for unpaid overtime and breach of contract.
The fire department’s policy and procedure man ual states battalion chiefs are required to respond to emergency calls such as all structural fires, smoke calls where smoke is visible inside a structure, gas leak calls, hazardous material calls, bomb threat calls, and water and rope rescue calls.
The lawsuit comes just days before Chief of Ad ministration Shane Dobson is set to join the Roswell Fire Department and two months after the City Council approved funding to begin transitioning the public safety agency from part-time to full-time.
Benefits include holiday pay, paid time off, paid sick leave and certain retirement benefits. The notice of the pending class action lawsuit states they had until Feb. 2 to decide whether they wanted to stay in the lawsuit or be excluded and get no benefits from it.
A trial for the case is set to start in December.
Breach of contract
The city filed a response Aug. 22, claiming no wrongdoing. It asks that the case be dismissed, and that Vickery pay all of its costs and expenses of liti gation.Vickery, who retired in April, started working at the Roswell Fire Department in 2007. At one point, he also held the position of fire captain.
It is unclear how many former part-time firefight ers joined the class action, but in 2019, the city filed a motion in which it stated that records show Roswell employed more than 100 firefighters during that time.
Additionally, he claims that in January, Fire Chief Joe Pennino unilaterally eliminated holiday pay for battalion chiefs, including all accrued holiday pay/ leaveVickerytime. states accrual of this type of leave had been awarded since September 2010. Before he re tired, he was earning approximately $47.22 per hour.
Bible worked at the Roswell Fire Department in various capacities, including as a firefighter, fire lieu tenant, fire captain and emergency medical techni cian, from 1992 until his retirement in 2017. Rogers worked in the department from 2007 to 2018 as a firefighter, fire captain and paramedic.
ROSWELL, Ga. — Retired Battalion Chief Edwin Vickery is suing the City of Roswell for unpaid over time and breach of contract.
Vickery’s allegations relative to the payment of accrued PTO do not fall under the Fair Labor Stan dards Act, because it does not require employers to provide employees with any paid time off. However, state law may require an employer to compensate an employee for accrued paid leave at the time of separation. Pending litigation

Vickery states the city has only paid him a por tion of his accrued PTO and refused to pay the rest.
A similar lawsuit was filed against the City of Roswell five years ago by former part-time firefighters David Bible and Brian Rogers.
Former firefighters file suit against City of Roswell
In the federal lawsuit filed July 28, he alleges the city misclassified him and other battalion chiefs as overtime-exempt employees, which violates of the Fair Labor Standards Act and state laws.
It also stated that in 2000, the city converted from a system of employing mostly full-time firefight ers with some reliance on volunteers to a system of employing “a significant number” of part-time firefighters who are not entitled to the same benefits as those who are full-time to cut approximately $8 million from its budget.
The city also denied it treated part-time firefight ers unfairly in that case.
The case continues to make its way through the court. There are several hearings scheduled from now and October that seem to indicate the city “lost data” that could have been relevant to the case, ac cording to court records.
Vickery states that while he was still with the Fire Department, there was a policy that both exempt and non-exempt firefighters could accrue paid time off each pay period and that it would be paid out upon their separation from employment. There was also a policy, he states, that employees would be compen sated for holidays regardless of whether they worked the holiday.

Alpharetta City Councilman Jason Binder questions city staff and a Columbia Engi neering representative about plans for the North Point Streetscape Project at the Aug. 22 City Council meeting.
Tom Ziegler of Columbia Engineer ing, which is designing the project, told council members that their recommen dation is to reduce North Point Park way from six to four travel lanes, while adding 12 foot wide “shared use” paths on either side of the roadway. Ziegler said combined with im proved bicycle and pedestrian cross ings, and other amenities for non-autocentric uses, the city could bolster local efforts to make North Point more attractive and in line with the longrange plan for the corridor.
“When we do this project success fully together … we’re going to be accepting awards in several years for what’s going to be accomplished along this corridor,” he said. “This is not your normal road project … this is a game-changer.”Inadditionto adding more diverse travel options and interconnectivity to the area, Ziegler said the project will focus on adding extensive landscape features to the corridor and imple menting green infrastructure, while having as little impact as possible on the existing environment.

Council members heard an up date Aug. 22 on plans to redesign the streetscape on North Point Parkway to de-emphasize vehicle traffic, add new bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure and connect the area with the Alpha Loop and Big Creek Greenway.

With this op tion, they would still be able to install multi-use paths, but impacts on other areas of the streetscape would be much more pronounced. After Ziegler’s presentation, council members shared their thoughts on the project design, many voicing their sup port for the four-lane design. “This city has a history of doing big things great and great things big,” Councilman John Hippes said. “Avalon is here, it’s not elsewhere. The project, approved by the City Council in October 2021, began construction in May. Now, with the turf installed, the only tasks left are fencing work and an ADA-accessible sidewalk to the lower field.
With the introduction of the new turf complex, Milton continues its stride to greater independence for sports programming. In the past, Milton and Alpharetta participated in joint programming. In 2018, the last year of the agree ment, Milton residents accounted for 14,300 registrations for Alpharettabased recreation programs. Only 413 Alpharetta residents participated in Milton-based park programs. During that same year, the City of Milton paid Alpharetta $453,100 in fees. As of now, Milton makes no pay ments to Alpharetta to subsidize its youth sports, Alpharetta Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard said. While there are no active transac tions between the cities for sports, Milton City Council approved two memorandums last year which waive

Cox Road park turfing project nears completion
AppenMedia.com/Forsyth | Forsyth Herald | September 1, 2022 | 13NEWS
Since May, the city has been making renovations to the fields at the Cox Road Ath letic Complex. The two large fields, recently named Legacy Park, are now artificial turf and have sewn-in lines for different sports. The project is almost complete, with only fencing and an ADA-accessible sidewalk left to construct. See PROJECT, Page 26 We proudly welcome Atlanta Fine Homes, LLC fully supports the principles of the Fair Housing Act and the Equal Opportunity Act. Each franchise is independently owned and operated.
Hundreds of children and scores of adults are set to use these fields, Milton Parks and Recreation Director Tom McKlveen said. Recently named Legacy Park, the 8-acre complex, will be used by the city’s program partners in girls and boys lacrosse, football and potentially cheerleading, baseball and potentially softball. The city also has an adult soccer program that operates out of the facility. And the fields are open to rent for other programs, groups and individuals.Withnatural grass, one day of heavy rain made the field unplayable for several subsequent days, McKlveen said, but with artificial turf, people can safely play in the rain.
The Cox Road Athletic Complex will provide more flexibility and opportuni ties for expansion to those subject to the memorandums as well as other cities, groups or non-government or ganizations that may want to rent the fields, he said. Since passing the $25 million Greenspace Bond in 2016, Milton has worked toward acquiring land for parks, trails and greenspace including conservation land, wildlife habitat and natural areas.
The city purchased the Cox Road complex in January 2020, about a year after passing its Comprehensive Parks and Recreation Master Plan. City staff developed the plan to make Milton a more attractive place to call home and to maintain its high quality of life. In the plan, staff identified a need for more athletic space. Most of the funding for Legacy Park came from impact fees, with the remainder coming from the city’s gen eralThefund.upfront cost for turf is higher than planting grass. Cox Road project expenditures were estimated at $1.43 million, which includes design, en gineering, survey work, construction andButwarranty.onayear-to-year basis, the costs associated with turf is slightly lower than those for grass, McKlveen said. There’s not as much upkeep with turf. Natural grass calls for chemicals and mowing, while turf requires only grooming and sweeping before being turned over after 10 to 12 years. The Legacy Park name Before city ownership, a local com pany bought the Cox Road property in the early ‘80s with the intention of using it as a place for soccer prac tice. Over the years, the late longtime soccer coach Philip Broome would encourage his players to reflect on what kind of legacy they’d like to leave behind.“Legacy Park is the third park to be part of a city initiative giving citizens a leading role in selecting names that resonate with visitors, make sense for a particular space and reflect on Mil ton’s values,” Milton Communications Director Greg Botelho stated. The naming of Legacy Park fol lowed the campaigns for Milton City Park and Preserve and Mayfield Park.

non-resident fees for those in Al pharetta who wish to participate in Milton lacrosse and football. Both are applicable to the Cox Road facility. Alpharetta created a similar arrange ment, whereb the city waives fees for Milton residents who wish to partici pate in its softball programming. Though there are no plans for Al pharetta’s softball program to use the facility, it could happen eventually, McKlveen said.

The Real Estate probate pickle of 2022 WILSON PROVIDED
Brought to you by – Michelle Wilson, Attorney, Wilson Legal Don’t let this be you. This last year executors filing in two of our metro At lanta counties had to wait 10 months or more to be approved as the estate’s representative (executor or adminis trator). You may be wondering why this would matter. Here’s why. Those poor people could not sell houses in those estates until they were approved by the court as the es tate’sYourepresentative.rememberhow the real estate market was this past year, right? Houses were selling for $20,000 or $30,000 over the asking price in 1 to 3 days. Imagine for a moment that you were one of the beneficiaries. Your loved one passes away. She has a home in a prime real estate mar ket. Houses in her neighborhood are selling like hot cakes. But nothing’s happening with the estate. What’s the hold up? You call the person who was named executor in the will. Apparently, she’s filed all the forms and taken the oath and now she’s just waiting on the court. You call again in a month, then again in two months. You and your siblings are frustrated and angry, but apparently there’s nothing that can be done. The interest rates go up. Then the interest rates go up again. People are not selling homes for thousands over the asking price. You and your siblings missed out on making a little extra that you all could split as ben eficiaries of the will, and you want to blame someone. If you can’t fix this situation, you want to know what you could have done to prevent it. The answer is simple. Use a trust instead of a will. When you have a last will and testament (or will), the probate court is required to approve the will for probate and the executor you chose as your estate’s representative. If you do not have a will, the same rule applies. The court must approve the person who represents the estate. A trust is the only planning tool that can avoid the probate court. With a trust, the estate’s representative (the successor trustee) simply signs a new certificate of trust after the death certificate ar rives and they can list real estate for sale immediately. Call today to reserve your chance to get a trust for your real estate today - 770-205-7861. Don’t get caught in the Probate Pickle. Michelle Wilson is an attorney and native of Cumming, Georgia. Michelle has specialized in estate planning, eldercare, probate and special needs since 2008. She has been making wishes come true and helping people live their best lives since 2008. At Wilson Legal, the firm seeks to improve the life of each person who crosses their threshold whether they become a client or not - to add the twinkle of joy back into their eye. Throughout 2021 home remodeling seemed virtually unaffected by the Covid pandemic. Home sales continue to be robust, but the pace of home remodel ing is even greater. New home buyers tend to remodel as soon as they move into their new home, but the remodeling craze seems to apply to everyone. “Our Kitchen and Bathroom remodeling busi ness has experienced a 75% year over year increase” says John Hogan, presi dent of Remodeling Expo Center, “and we don’t see any slowdown in sight”. There’s been a rapid change to sup ply chains in our entire economy and while some businesses are suffering, others are prospering. Demand for prod ucts and services are at record levels and businesses are required to re-think their supply chain from end to end; those businesses that creatively maneu ver around the supply chain issues are prospering.“Lastyear we re-focused all of our purchasing to those suppliers with lo cal inventory, so we get instant access to products, then we diverted custom built products to smaller, more nimble suppliers, and finally we began to inventory some items so our remodel ing jobs could get started faster and eliminate job progress interruptions. These changes weren’t easy but without them we couldn’t be in the hyper-growth mode that we’re presently experienc ing, says Bobbie Kohm, Vice President of Remodeling Expo Center, “Turnkey Design-Build companies, like us, keep the process very simple”. Low interest rates are going to be around for a long time and investment in our homes is likely to continue. For more information on Remodeling Expo Center (RemodelingExpo.com), contact them at their showroom at 48 King Street in Roswell or at 404-910-3969.
Can the pace of home remodeling continue? PROVIDED

As a designer I often see people underestimating their space and looking for furniture that is not big enough for their rooms. When people get items that are too small, they tend to spread them apart to fill up the space creating an environment that is far from inviting, cozy and esthetically pleasing. Another key element to keep the visual balance of the room is to be certain that all the pieces complement each other in scale. An accent chair that is too small or an end table that is too large, are going to offset your space. Once the size of the furniture is determined, it is time to start looking at colors and design and making furniture selections. The next step is to enhance the space with acces sories, always keeping in mind that, even lamps, rugs and artwork must be in proportion to ensure a nice visual flow in the room. A designer will not only assist you in picking the perfect colors and designs, they will also guide you in the right direction to make sure that your furniture is comfortable, functional and most im portantly appropriate for the dimensions of the room.
Furnishings
planning PROVIDED
When collaborating with a designer, a home visit and drawings are always encouraged to insure you are keeping the balance between furniture and the space. Once that is achieved, colors, accents and final touches will personalize it and bring it together.
The key to a good design…space
Furniture, accessories and colors are the elements that bring a room together, but the first step to an enjoy able and harmonious environment is in the space planning. Every room is different from another in size, shape, features, so before looking at color schemes and accessories you want to make sure that the furniture is appropriate for the space and that the placement is perfect to enhance the look and function of the room. Smaller spaces can be made to look bigger, creat ing an open and inviting area, this is why a good space plan is always a prerequisite when you are decorating a room, weather your taste is traditional, transitional or contemporary, it is very important that your furniture is to scale for the room. The size selection and place ment of a sofa, chair, dining table or any other piece of furniture, particularly if they are too small or too big, will throw off the visual impact of the room.

Brought to you by – Bill Rawlings, Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty With fall around the corner – think back-to-school schedules, approaching holidays and social events – taking the time to review your home’s efficiency and create a chaos-free space couldn’t be better. Having a place for everything not only helps to stream line everyday life, but if you are thinking about putting your home on the market, this should be at the top of your list because a clean and clutter-free space stands out to potential buyers and sells faster. For larger homes or in-depth projects, hiring a professional home organizer is always an option, but for small-to-medium-sized spaces and general upkeep, here are a few tips to help you take charge before the clutter gets out of hand.
4. Incorporate hooks and baskets. Utilizing wall space and small stuff sorters is key to keeping track of little things that tend to fall through the cracks. Especially useful in mudrooms and drop zones for coats, keys and house slippers, they also work well in the garage for tools and outdoor equipment.
Five ways to upgrade

3. Maximize countertop space. No one has ever complained about having too much counter space in their kitchen or bathroom, and a clean countertop always makes for an elegant photo. The key is to find ways to organize and store things up and out of the way – ceiling-mounted racks, drawer organiz ers, open shelves or hidden storage.
5. Purchase storage-ready furniture. Storage that is built into benches, beds and coffee tables is a great way to maximize space while giving a home to your books, toys or keepsakes. Just a few improvements can make a huge impact. If you need assistance reno vating your home or have any other real estate needs, please contact Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty at 770.442.7300. We would be happy to assist you! 1. Declutter. The first step in any organization plan is to simplify. Get rid of what you no longer use or things that take up a lot of space – scan old papers and bills, donate gently-worn clothing and don’t be afraid to throw away things like expired toilet ries/medicine, wire hangers and wornout linens!
2. Label. There’s no need to create a beautifully styled Pinterest-worthy labeling system for your sock drawers but adding labels where it really counts (think filing cabi net, kitchen spice rack or boxes going into storage) will make life dramatically easier and help you find what you need at a glance.

The project would cost about $15,000 a year for Republic Services to dispose of the glass, plus a one-time fee of $2,000 to purchase the recycling hopper.“This is probably the most cost-effi cient glass recycling program that the city could have,” DeRito said. No vote was taken on this project.

But she said they still have $25 million in grant funding that hasn’t been award ed yet.Ziegler said the project could be completed in two phases, to cut the funding initially needed in half. Con struction on the two phases would be split in half at Encore Parkway and the city could chose to start at either Mansell Road or Haynes Bridge Road to begin Phase 1.

Soon after the survey launched, Broome passed away suddenly. Of all words suggested by residents, “Broome” was the most repeated. The Legacy Park name was offi cially adopted at the Aug. 15 Milton City Council meeting. Council mem bers suggested that the name exclude any one individual’s name, so that the park could pay tribute to all influ ential figures — past, present and future. The newly renovated fields were named to honor Broome and oth ers who left a positive impact on the community, like NFL-player-turnedMilton-resident, inspiring coach and leader Tim Lester; coach, teacher and longtime Milton Parks and Recreation Advisory Board (PRAB) member Ron Hill; and Van Kottis, another PRAB member who was instrumental in Mil ton Steelers football and the makeover of Bell Memorial Park. from

WALKER,
How much money is enough?
However, in this writer’s experience there are people of faith that regard giving to God-centered causes is part of the monthly “must do” obligations, as in tithing. Share your religious and humanistic preferences and objectives with your financial adviser. It’s impor tant.At the top of the pyramid is “Dream Money,” “for all the things we’ve dreamed of being, doing, and having.” Hannah opens his book by ask ing questions, focusing initially on the basics as does Anthony. “How much (money) is enough for me?” “Am I spending my money as I ought?” He posits that if you can’t afford to pay for your own bare neces sities and genuine needs and those of your dependents if you have them, you don’t have enough money. It’s useful for recent graduates and those just starting out in the working world to ask yourself realistic questions based on hard Inflationrealities.hasalways been with us in some measure, with few exceptions.

How much money is enough? THE INVESTMENT COACH LEWIS
“There’sthoseingmoney,”themonthwaswherehouseholdoftenthere“toomuchleftatendofthegeneratempathyforwhosay,never enough!”
Elevated levels of inflation are likely to persist for some time. Hannah offers a tough question paraphrased thusly. How much will it cost to provide your self and your dependents with “genuine needs” beyond bare necessities, decent housing, adequate medical and dental care, a fundamental education, and the other basic goods needed to develop as we should physically, morally, intel lectually and spiritually? Think that through. Pie in the sky is not a plan.
Two books may be useful to your thinking: “The New Retirementality: Planning Your Life and Living Your Dreams...at Any Age You Want by Mitch Anthony,” 5th Edition (Wiley, 2020) and “What Your Money Means, And How To Use It Well” by Frank J. Hanna (Crossroad Publishing, 2008).

Educational choices, including majors or areas of study, whether high school, trade school, college, gradu ate school, will have significant impact on the success or failure relative to your life plan and the attainment of financial freedom with ample gift and dream money. What is the current earnings potential for graduates with certain skills and education? Can you afford to live and pay back loans in a given locale? Is where you want to live tax-friendly? Will your career path en able you to stay ahead of inflation with after-tax earnings? Will you work for someone else or for yourself? Adequate levels of insurance (life, disability, health, and liability) are foundational to peace of mind and pro tection against calamities. A savings plan that allows you to build a “what if?” reserve is basic. Beyond that, you want to create and maintain a longterm wealth accumulation plan that moves you toward freedom, gift, and dreamReadingmoney.Mitch Anthony’s book and Frank Hanna’s book is a recommended “good start,” to be followed by a goaloriented financial plan backed by an experienced advisory team. If you have a plan in place now, a review based on the inflationary and tax law outlook is advised.Chapter 1 of Hanna’s book is entitled, “Money Demands Answers.”

The current inflationary surge has made the situation worse. In April, Adviser Investments CIO Jim Lowell appeared on “Mornings With Maria” on the Fox Business Channel, indicating that in his opin ion, in the coming recession the top 1 percent to 15 percent of consumers “will fare pretty well and the majority of consumers will struggle to make ends meet in terms of the household items theyInflationneed.” decelerated slightly to 8.5 percent in July after hitting 9.1 percent in June, the highest level since Novem ber 1981. The decline was largely in costs for fuel as drivers have reacted by driving less, reducing demand. However, “food at home” prices rose 13.1 percent on an annualized basis, the highest since 1979! So the question as to how much money is enough may seem outra geous to those working hard just to keep up with basic needs and family demands. Nevertheless, for those doing long-range financial life planning with an eye toward financial independence at some point, certainly by retirement, financial projections are foundational.

Moving to the next level in Han na’s hierarchy of thinking, have you thought through and planned for “profession-related needs”? That may be continuing education, an appropri ate wardrobe, equipment, licenses, professional designations, professional association dues, coaching, travel, etc.
Are you asking yourself the right questions? If you are parents ready to cough big bucks to underwrite the education of a child, are you asking the right questions relative to educa tional choices and long-term strategies encompassing financial freedom?

Anthony, with a financial rendition of Abraham Maslow’s famous Hierar chy of Needs, “Maslow Meets Retire ment,” devised a pyramid with “Surviv al Money” at the base. Once you earn and accumulate enough money after tax to meet basic needs, the next level is “Safety Money,” reserves to “meet life’s unexpected turns.” Next comes “Freedom Money,” spending on things that bring “enjoyment and fulfillment to life.”Higher up in Anthony’s pyramid is “Gift Money,” funding “for the people and causes that we care deeply about.”

U.S. Census Bureau, in 2021 there were almost 98,000 centenarians in the United States. Bad news for our male readers, 83 percent of centenar ians were female. The number reaching the century mark grew substantially from 53,000 in 2010, but centenar ians still represent a very small percentage of the total population and a smaller percentage than in many other countries.Fannie married Otis Holcombe (1916–2006) in 1939. He was raised on a farm on Providence Road in the Providence Community and was a trained machinist and mechanic. They had five children, 10 grandchildren – one deceased – and seven great-grandchildren. They lived initially on Cox Road, then on King Road in Milton. In 1960, they purchased a property on Mayfield Road. The previous owner, James Cash, was an automobile mechanic who built a concrete block workshop near his house. The workshop has become a local landmark with its faded sign HOLCOMBE’S MACHINE SHOP on the front exterior wall. People often stop by to have gradu ation photos taken in front of the workshop where Otis used to make small items for friends and customers. He obtained the necessary saws and other pieces of equipment from Elliot’s Business Machine Company in Atlanta where he was employed. Later he joined Simmons Engineering, a company in Roswell and Dallas that made machines for chicken processing plants, until his retire ment.Fannie’s daughter, Kay Bagley, says that her father “would come home from work, go to the shop and make bowls, rolling pins, jewelry and even a tractor” which the family still has parked by the shop.

Fannie Holcombe – four generations strong
Fannie Holcombe was born in 1919 on Etris Road in Milton County. One of 11 children, she learned the mean ing of hard work at an early age. Her father William Samuel Etris (1875–1956) grew cotton and corn on 40 acres. Corn was for turning into meal in their grist mill to feed the cows. He would also grind corn for neighbors in exchange for a portion of the meal. Cotton was the cash crop.“Oh, how my back hurt picking cotton on my knees” Fannie recalls. Yes, she crawled be tween the rows of cotton because the large sack strapped around her shoulder had to be dragged along the ground and would weigh 100 pounds when full of picked cotton. Planting cotton was a complex, multistage process involving a lot of plowing behind a mule and a lot of hoe ing by hand. Cotton growing and picking was a sun-up to sun-down job in the hot Georgia sun.
“It was a very close-knit family,” Rodney says.

Fannie’s son Bobby also remembers picking cotton. He says the cotton boll “would eat up your hand.” A cot ton boll is made up of separate compartments in which up to 300 seeds grow. To pick the cotton from the bolls, Bobby had to twist the cotton out of the boll which was very sharp and would cut your hand if the cotton was not twisted correctly. The family also operated a dairy farm with about 75 cows for about five years in the 1950s. They raised Guernsey, Jersey and Holstein cows and sold their milk to the Creatwood Farm Dairy in Smyrna. When young Fannie went to Ebenezer School in Ro swell, after milking the cows before breakfast, she had to walk half a mile from her house to catch the school bus. One room of the two-room wooden schoolhouse accom modated grades 1 through 3 and the other housed grades 4 through 6. Each room had a woodburning stove. The curriculum was reading, writing and arithmetic. Fannie then attended Northwestern Elementary School, which was located where the Milton Community Church is today on Birmingham Highway. The school closed in 1992. She graduated from Milton High School in 1938.Fannie is a remarkable 102 years old. Physically strong and agile, she enjoys sewing and solving up to 1,000-piece puzzles which she can finish in three or four days. She is totally committed to the Atlanta Braves, so much so that the team sent her a Braves baseball cap on her 100th Accordingbirthday.tothe
Rodney Reese, Fannie’s grandnephew, recalls annual family reunions, usually at the home of Fannie’s sister Bertha Etris Cook (1902–2011) at her home on Etris Road. Bertha passed away at age 108.
