Giant in Atlanta restaurant scene, dies at 78 Antonio Fundora remembered for his love of family, patrons By SYDNEY DANGREMOND sydney@appenmedia.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — About a month before he passed away of a heart attack, Antonio Fundora pulled his wife Maria aside for a private conversation. “He said to me, ‘Mara … I’m so sorry,’” Maria said. “Mara” is what he always called her. “I punched him in the shoulder, and I said, ‘What are you talking about?’ and he said, ‘I’m sorry that I’m going to be leaving you so soon. That I’m not going to be with you. I’m so sorry that I won’t be with you into old age. But I just want you to know that I will love you until my last dying breath. And you’ll have the kids, the kids will get you through this when I’m gone.’” The conversation, Maria said, was out of the blue. They had no idea that just a few weeks later, Maria would be leaning on her kids for support and Antonio would be gone. “I don’t know if he knew, if he had not been feeling well,” Maria said. “But it was like he was preparing me for what could happen.” Since his death on Oct. 22, Maria has been trying to stay positive, taking each moment as it comes. Antonio was 78 years old, a giant in the Atlanta food scene, feeding patrons since opening his first restaurant, Alfredo’s, on Cheshire Bridge Road in 1974. Originally from Havana, Cuba, Fundora immigrated to the United States in 1962, becoming a citizen 14 years later. In the interim, he worked long hours, saving up enough money to bring 56 family members from Cuba to the U.S. in a

Before landing in Atlanta in 1967, Fundora spent time in New York City and West Palm Beach, Florida, gaining experience in the hospitality business. He worked his way up from dishwasher to chef, before setting out on his own and opening Alfredo’s. Motivated by the success of his first venture in the restaurant business, Fundora opened Avanti’s four years later in 1978, then Antonio’s Bakery in 1980 and Tony’s Casa Napoli in 1982. In 1987, Antonio was set up with Maria on a blind date, and the rest is history. Two and a half months later, they
were married, and a partnership was forged. “From the moment that we met, we saw each other every day until he passed away,” Maria said. “He was my soulmate.” Maria, who had also immigrated from Cuba with her family, said their shared culture and heritage helped them to “click” so quickly. At the time, Maria was not in the restaurant business, but she knew it well. Her father was a restauranteur in Chicago when she was growing up, and

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County may find itself at odds again with the City of Cumming over the latest in a series of annexation requests. This time, the applicant is Horizon Christian Academy seeking to have its 34-acre campus on Sawnee Drive incorporated into the city. The applicant anticipates no change from the property’s current use, and the county anticipates no impact to its infrastructure. Because the annexation appears to have little effect on the current density and infrastructure, the county may have few options to fight the annexation. Even so, county commissioners are not happy about it. County Commission Chairwoman Cindy Jones Mills said she’s not worried about the school annexation, but she is fearful of the domino effect it may have on neighboring properties. “It could be coming across the road,” Mills said. Right now, the county receives

Deputies charge teen with auto break-ins FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A 16-yearold Florida teen was charged with several vehicle break-ins Nov. 7 after deputies responded to suspicious activity at the Deerfield Juncture Apartments along Deerfield Crossing Drive. Deputies were called to the apartment complex when a witness called 911 and reported suspects in hoodies breaking into vehicles in the parking lot. Upon arrival at the scene, deputies discovered evidence of forced entry into several vehicles, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies also found an unoccupied vehicle stolen from the apartment complex in Milton. The teen suspect matched the description given by the 911 caller. Milton police nabbed him running in a parking lot near the stolen vehicle. He had a window punch tool and some of the items from his alleged heists in his possession, deputies said. The teen was taken to the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center and charged with 17 counts of entering auto, theft by taking motor vehicle and criminal trespass to property. Investigators believe the teen was involved in over 50 other auto burglaries at the Halcyon mixed-use development Nov. 2. More charges are pending in connection with those allegations, according to deputies.
Cuffed suspect cited for attempted escape FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A Norcross man remained in jail after he reportedly tried to escape the custody of deputies during an Oct. 21 traffic stop along Ga. 400.

Deputies charge suspect with aggravated battery FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A Cumming man was arrested Nov. 4 following an alleged attack along Dr. Bramblett Road. Deputies arrested Tyler Joseph Mele, 25, on Ga. 9 and charged him with aggravated battery. The charge stems from an Oct. 25 incident during which Mele reportedly punched his girlfriend’s brother in the face. According to deputies, Mele knocked out the victim’s front tooth and split his lip. The victim told officers the attack was unprovoked, and Mele often gets aggressive when he drinks alcohol. He said he and his sister were playfully slapping each other in the face. He said Mele punched him immediately after he jokingly slapped his sister.

Alpharetta marks launch of improvements to Equestrian Center By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Less than a week after voters passed a multi-million-dollar parks bond, about two dozen people gathered at Alpharetta’s Wills Park to mark the launch of major upgrades to the Equestrian Center. It was the start of some $11 million in improvements planned for Alpharetta’s centerpiece park, a 120-acre natural oasis in one of North Fulton County’s busiest cities. The horse park, itself, is scheduled to receive $5 million of bond money for upgrades that include a new competition ring, drainage and footing in all competition rings and the covered arena, new barns, shaded spectator seating and an office/spectator building. The non-profit Wills Park Equestrian Foundation has committed $5 million of its own money to match the city’s commitment to the upgrades. “This is a 50-year-old park, we have a lot of revitalizing to do,” said Foundation President Cheryl Sims. “It has launched many national champions, and it has been the cornerstone of many, many young riders, some of
which you’ve seen here today.” Sims said work on the arena will begin in January, and the project is set for completion the first of March. Just last month, the City Council voted unanimously to commit $1.3 million for site work that includes clearing, grading and drainage improvements at the horse park. With the overwhelming passage of the parks bond, Wills Park and the Equestrian Center will become the major focus of revitalization that will include construction of Wacky World Playground, additional parking, improvements to the disc golf course, a complete rebuild of Waggy World Dog Park and construction of a family gathering spot near the pool facility. Three members of the City Council, including Mayor Jim Gilvin, voted against placing the bond on the November ballot, arguing that it would commit the city to spending money it may need for road improvements if the countywide transportation sales tax, also on the Nov. 2 ballot, failed at the polls. But that fear faded on election night when the sales tax passed by a 3-1 margin. The tax is expected to generate some $60 million in added revenue for trans-

portation projects in the city. Gilvin said he was reassured by the sentiments of a local community that proved its commitment to bettering its quality of life. “It’s really special when a community can pull together and work with the local government,” he said at the groundbreaking. “We had a partner in the Equestrian Foundation, Cheryl and all the donors who made this day possible.” The fight to get the parks bond on the November ballot – it passed the City Council on a narrow 4-3 vote – has not left elected leaders unscarred, however. Council members who led the campaign to get the referendum on the fall ballot said they were proud to be part of a group that recognizes the will of Alpharetta residents and acts on it. Ben Burnett, Jason Binder, Karen Richard and Donald Mitchell all celebrated their efforts pushing for the bond. “Voting in favor of projects and funding projects are not mutually exclusive,” Burnett said. “Anybody can show up for a ribbon cutting, but it actually takes people to back-bench the work to get to days like today.”
Annexation: Continued from Page 1 no tax benefit from the school. Neither will the city if and when the property is annexed. “It’s always about the linchpin property,” Commissioner Laura Semanson said, adding that if Horizon sold off a portion of its unoccupied acreage, the city could allow a use the county would have objected to. Molly Esswein, speaking on behalf of the County Attorney’s office, said that based on the trends exercised by the city over the past, it could be expected that more annexations will occur on Cumming’s northern border. “To the northwest, you’ve definitely got properties they could annex, and beyond that is the Sawnee Mountain Preserve,” Esswein said. Commissioner Molly Cooper said the city has gone after the preserve before. “This isn’t the first time,” she said. Commissioners requested the County Attorney’s office prepare a map of adjacent parcels that could be annexed near the school, so they can deliberate whether to file a formal objection to the annexation with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. The deadline to file an objection is Nov. 24.

Forsyth County fosters agritourism with new use permit By TIFFANY MORGAN newsroom@appenmedia.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — No farm, no food. And for Forsyth County, no farms, no tourism. County Commissioners gave a boost to area farmers Nov. 4, approving conditional use permits on five sites for agritourism, a designation that will allow landowners to use their property for tourism interests. Georgia’s agritourism industry accounted for $124 million to the state’s economy in 2020, according to the Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development at the University of Georgia. It runs the gamut from wedding venues and wineries to tree farms and camping. It also allows farmers greater choice of markets for how they use their land. All residents who spoke at the public hearing said County Manager Kevin Tanner was a driving force behind the agritourism effort. “The energy [Kevin Tanner] has put into this initiative will wind up preserving hundreds of acres of farmland,” said Kinsey Family Farm owner Jim Kinsey. “It makes it easier for those of us working in agritourism to keep our farms and
keep it profitable.” The county’s agritourism conditional use permit was established in July to open more avenues for farmers with 20 acres or more. It allows landowners to use the property for any business that is agriculture related. It also provides for flexibility, allowing operators to switch from one ag-related enterprise to another without applying for another permit. Commissioners unanimously approved all five agritourism agenda items Nov. 4. Commissioner Laura Semanson said the approval of agritourism is important because it grants farmers the freedom to choose how they want to monetize their property and thus benefit the county. Tanner, who has had a farm in his family since 1850, said farmland is something personal to him, and he wants to see it preserved for generations to come. With the value of land increasing in Forsyth County, providing farmers with the means to expand uses through agritourism will help them develop their property successfully while preserving green space, Tanner said. “[Farming] is part of who we are as a community and where we came from,” Tanner said. “It’s important to remem-

Fundora: Continued from Page 1 she had sworn to herself that she would never marry anyone in the business. She laughed, recounting another promise she made to herself: not to marry anybody from Cuba. Nevertheless, they fell in love. Just two years into their marriage, they opened their first restaurant together called Avanti’s Pescevino, where Antonio served as head chef, with Maria running the business side. In 1992, the couple opened Tony’s Farmer’s Market before opening their dream restaurant, Casa Nuova Italian Restaurant, in Alpharetta in 1998. “He loved this industry. He loved hospitality,” Maria said. “It had given him the opportunity to meet so many different kinds of people. He said, ‘This is what I know how to do. And this is how we make our living.’” Antonio didn’t just make a living though. He was an innovator in the field. “He opened the first restaurant in Atlanta with an open kitchen which was unheard of in this city. And we did that in March of 1989,” Maria said. “First farm-totable in Atlanta was Casa Nuova. He always thought outside of the box.” Each of his ventures had the same three ingredients, regardless of menus and venues. “He always said to me there were two things that we must always do: ‘provide excellent, quality food… and service,’” Maria said. “’If you do those two things, you will never fail.’” The third ingredient: taking care of the staff. Every day at 3:30 p.m., the Fundoras host a “fam-
ily meal” for the entire staff before the restaurant opens for business. “Loyalty and being there for people when they needed you most,” Maria said, were two of the values the couple brought into every business venture. Much of the staff at Casa Nuova have been with the restaurant since it opened 23 years ago. Some have been with the Fundoras even longer. Ricardo Olano began working with Antonio in 1978. Antonio and his family, he said, are what has kept him on staff for 43 years. Casa Nuova is a true family business. Antonio and Maria’s son Pepe and daughter Cari both work at the restaurant. Pepe serves as a business partner to his mother. Their third and youngest son Alex is studying at the Savannah College of Art and Design. “We raised our children very old school and I’m so glad we did,” Maria said. “Our three kids have such a work ethic. He was an amazing father, strict… But he was always so good.” The Fundora’s home was always open, Maria said. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, any given Sunday the house would be filed with friends from all different backgrounds. The relationships Antonio built over his life were more than passing acquaintances. His friends continued to share their love for him and his family after his untimely passing. More than 700 people attended Antonio’s visitation and funeral mass in Roswell, Maria said. “My children and I were so touched, we just couldn’t believe it,” Maria said. “It has given my family such peace to know that he was so loved and appreciated and thought of.” Some attendees of the visitation, Maria said, waited in line two hours to say goodbye to Antonio and express

their condolences to the family. “People whose lives he touched came out to pay their condolences and their respects like nothing that we expected,” Maria said. The loss and its wound are still fresh for Maria, her family and those who loved Antonio, but Maria said she’s comforted by the love and time the two shared and the knowledge that she will see her soulmate again. “We spent 34 beautiful years together,” Maria said. “So, I have to embrace that, I have to celebrate that and just be thankful for the time we had together.”

Alpharetta office complex sold to institutional buyer ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Private equity real estate manager Velocis has sold three assets in a portfolio sale to an institutional buyer, including Parkway at Avalon in Alpharetta. Parkway at Avalon is a 194,644-square-foot, two-building office property directly across from Avalon, one of the top mixed-use developments in the South. Velocis purchased Parkway at Avalon in 2017 from a special servicer, LNR Partners, through an online auction platform and significantly repositioned the asset through a lobby renovation and amenity upgrades. Terms of the sale were not disclosed. The property was marketed for lease as having a free onsite fitness center and proximity to 22 restaurants, two luxury hotels, shopping and nature trails. Through prioritizing investments in the Sunbelt markets, Velocis acquired Kierland One in Phoenix, Parkway at Avalon in Alpharetta and 3120 Fairview Park in Falls Church, Va. “By initiating several strategic renovations and marketing campaigns for each property, we were able to unlock value for our investors,” said Jim Yoder, co-founder and partner at Velocis. “These value additions, alongside our long-standing industry relationships, provided the perfect opportunity for all three assets from different markets to be sold together.” Discussions on the deals began prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We have been in discussion with the buyer for just under two years. Through patience and persistence, we were able to successfully execute on a portfolio sale by delivering meaningful capital back to our investors,” said Mike Lewis, co-founder and partner at Velocis. Dallas-based Velocis has been active in real estate since
Parkway at Avalon features nearly 200,000 square feet of office space. 2010, purchasing 35 assets located in Sunbelt markets within Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and the Washington D.C. Reptiles reunited as juveniles face state charges By SYDNEY DANGREMOND sydney@appenmedia.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Community members were captivated by the bizarre and troubling theft of five beloved eastern box turtles from the Autrey Mill Nature Preserve in late September. All five turtles were returned unharmed Oct. 5, and charges from the Preserve were dropped against the kidnappers. A Forsyth County high school resource officer recognized the three male juveniles on surveillance footage from the preserve. He then contacted the Johns Creek Police Department, the department said in a statement. After the boys were questioned, officers found the turtles in the basements of two of the boys’ homes, Autrey Mill President Lara Maltby said. The turtles — named Tres, Who, What, Where and Why — were discovered alongside 16 other box turtles of unknown origin, Maltby said. “There were several of them that had come from completely different biomes,” Maltby said. “One of them was native to the Florida-Georgia [state] line, one of them was native to coastal Georgia.” Six of the remaining turtles were dehydrated and sick when police found them, Maltby said, so they were relocated to the Chattahoochee Nature Preserve for rehabilitation. The others, Maltby said, were temporarily housed at Autrey Mill. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has since found homes for the turtles in preserves across
the state including three of the sick turtles, said Nature Preserve Executive Director Lizen Hayes. And while Autrey Mill is not pressing charges against the juveniles, Maltby said the Department of Natural Resources will press charges “because the activities were against state law.” According to the Law Enforcement Division of the DNR, box turtles “may not be held as a pet regardless of its origin or morphology.” The Georgia Department of Natural Resources could not be reached for comment on the investigation. During the theft, the boys also damaged the turtles’ home at the Preserve, breaking the latch, hinges and wooden frame of their enclosure. The Preserve has since rebuilt the enclosure, which cost roughly $450 to complete, Hayes said. Costs were split between the parents of the three teens. Based on conversations with one of the boys’ parents, Hayes said she thinks he might have had good, albeit very misguided intentions. “[The parent] said his son thought that this enclosure wasn’t good enough or that [the turtles] weren’t in a good place, so they took them thinking that they were like rescuing them, but he was grossly misinformed,” Hayes said. Maltby said she is just glad to have the turtles back home safe. “It’s the best that we could hope for, that they came back to us in acceptable condition,” Maltby said. “Especially given that some of the others were sick, we were very glad that they didn’t appear to have contract-

ed any of those issues.” One of the boys is scheduled to visit the Preserve for community service and will be supervised by Autrey Mill staff and a parent, Hayes said. “We are going to use this as an opportunity to educate them,” Hayes said. If you see a box turtle you believe to be in distress, Hayes recommends contacting the AWARE Wildlife Center by visiting awarewildlife.org or calling 678-418-1111.

Oven Ready Dinners!
Dear Reader, I am pleased to present Appen Media Group’s newest addition to your local newspaper, a free coupon page for local restaurants that we hope to update and publish every week. This is a continued effort by our company to support local restaurants through a still very trying economic period. This program costs participating restaurants nothing, other than the discount they are offering their customers in the coupon. It is a small way for us at Appen Media Group to give back to the business community that has given us so much. Our hope is that this will continue to protect the high quality of life we have come to enjoy in the north Metro area. For me, the pandemic highlighted the best in you – our readers – as you rushed to the aid of local businesses looking for new and creative ways to keep their lights on. You made donations, ordered take out, bought gift cards, took food to healthcare workers – whatever you could do to help out. Local businesses still desperately need your continued support and patronage. So, please take advantage of these great offers! While you are at it, please take a look through our newspaper and support our advertisers. They are the reason we are able to offer this program – for free – to local restaurants.

Newtown Park Amphitheater to re-open Roughly five months after the Mark Burkhalter Amphitheater at Newtown Park began to collapse, repairs are scheduled to be completed this week. All that remains are some “final punch-list and clean-up items,” Communications Director Bob Mullen said. In early June, several of the structure’s support beams began to crumple under the weight of the roof. Mayor Mike Bodker said the beams had been built improperly and were rotting from the inside. For several months, the area was locked off while a pair of cranes propped up the remaining structure. Repairs, which total nearly $77,000, began the last week of August and are expected to finish on schedule.
