Can Strength Training Reduce the Risk of Osteoporosis? Yes. Doing strength training exercise can increase bone density and help prevent osteoporosis. Numerous scientific studies have shown that weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercise performed regularly can dramatically reduce the risk of fractures and increase bone density. In her book, Strong Women, Strong Bones, Miriam E. Nelson, PhD, of Tufts University, Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, explains that women who walk for exercise have stronger bones than women who don’t exercise at all. But, she says, “…the gentle stimulation of walking takes decades to produce effects.” On the other hand, Dr. Nelson’s own research showed that “...strength training just twice a week dramatically cuts the risk of fractures for postmenopausal women. After a year, participants gained bone in their hip and spine; they became stronger and their balance improved.” During weight-bearing exercise, the muscles and related tendons place tension on the bones as muscles contract to lift the weight. This action stimulates the body to lay down more bone. Bones and Osteoporosis According to The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), “Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones. It happens when you lose too much bone, make too little bone, or both. As a result, your bones become weak and may break from a minor fall or, in serious cases, even from simple actions, like sneezing or bumping into furniture.” Although bones appear to
discuss this with your doctor and develop a plan of action. Whatever your age, you can take steps to improve your bone health. What Do the Experts Recommend? The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends taking these steps to protect your bones: • Get enough calcium and vitamin D and eat a well-balanced diet • Engage in regular weightbearing and muscle-strengthening exercise • Avoid smoking and limit alcohol

be solid, they actually have a porous, honeycomb-like structure. Healthy bone is about 65% mineral, primarily calcium, and bone tissue is in a continuous cycle of breakdown and remodeling. In growing children and young adults, the bone-building process is happening faster than breakdown, resulting in a net increase in bone mass. However, this balance begins to shift at around age 25, after which we tend to lose bone mass faster than it is rebuilt. As bone density decreases, the spaces in the honeycomb-like structure become larger. If too much bone is lost and these spaces become too large, there is a greater risk of breaking a bone from a minor accident or fall. Although women, especially postmenopausal women, are at greater risk for developing osteoporosis, this bone disease is not gender specific. Men are at risk, too. If you think you are at increased risk for osteoporosis, it is important to
Sources of Calcium • Cheese • Yogurt • Milk • Sardines • Dark leafy greens—e.g., kale, spinach, collard or turnip greens • Fortified cereals • Fortified orange juice • Fortified soy or almond milk Vitamin D is also critically important because, among its other roles, it facilitates calcium absorption. The best source of vitamin D is 15 minutes of direct sunlight without sunscreen 2 – 3 times a week. This is usually enough exposure to allow your body to make enough vitamin D on its own. People with darker skin tone require a longer duration. Food Sources of Vitamin D • Butter

There’s an APP for that! For YOUR ears and YOUR world Can you imagine being able to stream the sounds from your iPhones and iPads directly into hearing devices that NO ONE else can see? What if you could answer or make phone calls and clearly hear the person on the other end through both ears? The marvels of technology have made these scenarios possible to create a seamless connection to a world filled with sounds. More than 36 million Americans experience hearing challenges in various environments and situations - a frustrating disadvantage to those affected. Forget about what you think you know about hearing devices up to now. You will be AMAZED at how smart, how helpful, and how transforming better hearing can now be. “As an audiologist for almost 24 years, it is both exciting and overwhelming to stay on top of the latest advances in hearing technology. It is a very fulfilling time to be in a profession that is truly transforming people’s lives by connecting them to the world in a way that others take for granted” says Dr. Deborah Woodward. “Another leap forward has been the very successful extended wear option.” These devices are invisible to others, worn 24/7 for months at a time, and have no batteries to change. If you have a mild to moderate hearing loss, this cutting edge option may be right for you.
More than 36 million Americans experience hearing challenges in various environments and situations - a frustrating disadvantage to those affected. As the local community’s leading link to better hearing over the past 16 years, Dr. Deborah Woodward and her staff at the Johns Creek Audiology and Hearing Center have successfully led thousands of hearing challenged patients to a more enjoyable and fulfilling life. Dr. Woodward offers patients not only improved day to day communication, but also the solutions to those challenging listening environments such as restaurants, group meetings, phone communication, and yes, that age old argument between spouses on the “correct” loudness of the television
volume. Countless devices and services are now being marketed to assist the hearing challenged but like fingerprints, no two ears are the same. Consulting with an audiologist is an absolute must. The “one model fits all” bought from a magazine or website has the potential to actually add MORE damage to your current hearing profile. If in need of help, you can rely on the expertise of a Doctor of Audiology and a Center with a proven TRUST record to help plan
your personal and unique solution to “better” hearing. The Johns Creek Audiology and Hearing Center is known for their competitive pricing along with award winning service. They can also provide diagnostic testing for hearing disorders, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), vertigo, and ear wax management. All major insurance plans are accepted and no interest finance plans are offered. Call (770)814-1260 to schedule YOUR life changing appointment
ADHD – not just in children anymore Adult ADHD is associated with multiple comorbidities such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and other personality disorders. Adult ADHD is a valid psychiatric disorder of adulthood distinct from these other conditions. Adult attention deficit disorder differs from the childhood variant because the hyperactivity in adults may be replaced by other symptoms such as anxiety, impulsivity and inattentiveness. In fact, prior to 2002 there were no diagnostic guidelines, but there have been great advances since. Some of the symptoms that characterize Adult ADHD are:
ADHD is a relatively common psychiatric disorder among adults. The prevalence is thought to be 3.5%-5.3%, which accounts for more than 11 million cases in the United States alone. With increased public awareness, adult ADHD became a topic of great interest so clinicians should be able to diagnose, treat, and manage patients with this disorder. Etiology is still uncertain. Genetics however is believed to play a prominent role, followed in importance by acquired injuries to the brain. ADHD was widely thought to be strictly a disorder of childhood. Now there are numerous scientific papers and clinical trials that acknowledge the existence of an adult version of this disorder, which can be traced back to the younger years. Before this time ADHD in adults was known as Minimal Brain Damage or Dysfunction (MBD).
1. Often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in school-work, work or other activities. 2. Often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities. 3. Often does not seem to listen when spoke to directly. 4. Often does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores or duties in the workplace (not due to oppositional behavior or failure to understand directions) 5. Often has difficulty organizing tasks and activities. 6. Often avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort (such as schoolwork or homework)Often loses things necessary for tasks and activities (eg. School assignments, pencils, keys) 7. Is often easily distracted by extraneous stimuli. PAID ADVERTORIAL
8. Is often forgetful in daily activities.
Some children with ADHD continue to have it as adults. And many adults who have the disorder don’t know it. They may feel that it is impossible to get organized, keep a job, or remember and keep appointments. Daily tasks such as getting up in the morning, preparing to leave the house for work, arriving at work on time, and being productive on the job can be especially challenging for adults with ADHD. These adults may have a history of failure at school, problems at work, failed relationships and traffic accidents. Like teens, adults with ADHD may seem restless and may try to complete several tasks as once, most of them unsuccessfully. They also tend to prefer “quick fixes,” rather than taking the steps needed to achieve greater rewards. Treatment is very rewarding. The first medications to be approved by the FDA belonged to a non-stimulant group of medications: Atomoxetine. The FDA later approved stimulants such as methylphenidate and mixed amphetamine salts. Group delivered cognitive behavioral therapy is recommended in some cases as a supportive treatment. If you or someone you know may have Adult ADHD, call Johns Creek Family Medicine at 770-771-6591 and schedule an appointment with Dr. Zack Charkawi.

Bianco Primary Care is a new type of general practic As medical students, husband and wife Drs. Michael and Shelley Bianco saw a problem emerging in healthcare. Time after time they heard their physician preceptors tell patients that there was only time to discuss one health concern during appointments. With costs growing and reimbursements from insurance and Medicare shrinking, doctors are being forced to see more patients each day. The practice of medicine has become quantity focused rather than quality focused. Drs. Michael and Shelley Bianco want to change this. Bianco Primary Care is a new type of general practice that gives doctors and patients more time together. This time allows patients the ability to talk with their doctor about health concerns without feeling rushed. They are able to take the time to listen, to develop a personal relationship with their patients and to offer more than just an additional prescription. This caliber of care is delivered within the concierge or subscription model of primary care. In this type of medical practice, patients pay an annual fee that guarantees them more time with their physician. This fee, about the cost of a daily Starbucks coffee, allows the physician to have a smaller patient pool for their practice, giving them the ability to see fewer patients in the day and spend more time with those patients. Joining a concierge medical practice restores the strong doctor-patient relationship that many of us can still remember.
Becoming a patient of Bianco Primary Care means same day or next day appointments that start on-time, having access to your doctor by phone or
email 24/7, and developing a personal relationship with your doctor. Additionally, Drs. Michael and Shelley Bianco offer nutrition counseling, coordi-
nation with specialists and house-calls. Bianco Primary Care is accepting new patients, call for a 30 day no cost trial with Bianco Primary Care.

One hour of shopping cannot detect colon cancer One hour with a gastroenterologist can Most people wouldn’t think twice about spending an hour at the mall; so why do so many delay getting a colonoscopy? Although colon cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer death for men and women, it is one of the most preventable and often curable cancers through screening and early detection. The American College of Gastroenterology and The American Cancer Society recommend colon cancer screenings begin at the age of
50. However, if there are risk factors or a family history, an earlier screening is recommended. “A colonoscopy is a quick, out-patient procedure and will identify and remove any potentially pre-cancerous polyps. A new breakthrough in oral cancer early diagnosis By: Dr. Ushma Patel, DMD Did you know that Oral Cancer Kills One American every Hour? Within 15 years Cancer will become the #1 Killer surpassing Heart Disease. Cancer of the mouth kills thousands every year, and it leaves thousands more with a lifetime of hideous facial deformity as a result of surgical treatment. You don’t have to be a smoker or ‘chew’ tobacco to develop oral cancer. Anyone can get it. Oral cancer kills more people each year than either skin cancer (malignant melanoma) or cervical cancer. Of the 20 most common cancers, oral and laryngeal cancers are the only two that have not had a significant improvement in survival rate over the last 20 years. And oral cancer has
not had improvement in the death rate in the last 40 years! The average five-year survival rate for oral cancer is still only about 50%. Oral cancer usually starts out as a red, or more often, a white patch somewhere in the mouth. Although a large number of people have similar appearing white or red abnormalities in their mouth, the vast majority of these lesions are benign. However, up to 6% of these innocuous, harmless looking lesions have been found to be pre-cancerous or even cancerous. In the past, because millions of people have had innocuous looking lesions in their mouths, it has not been practical to perform a surgical biopsy on most of them. As a result, many pre-cancerous or early stage cancers remained undetected. Deforming surger-
ies could have been prevented by early detection! But things have recently changed for the better. Dentists now have the ability to easily test each and every one of these lesions just to be sure they are harmless. Regular dental exams / checkups in our office now include this oral cancer screening. We now use OralID for Oral
screening, for more info check out the videos at https://www. youtube.com/user/TheOralID. “A two minute exam
could save your life!” For more information, contact Dr. Ushma Patel at 678-894-7926 or visit www.HiTechSmiles.com.

The Catalys laser enables us to not only perform bladeless cataract surgery while reducing astigmatism, but also create a precise circular opening in the cataract while softening the cataract prior to its removal. r Ou tion Dr. Kaufman is a leading iV sit Loca board certified ophthalmolw Ne ogist in Northern Georgia. FAQ – Bladeless cataract surgery What is a cataract and what is cataract surgery? Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss in people over 40 and today cataracts affect more than 22 million Americans age 40 and older. At some point in our life, we will all develop a cataract. The natural lens of the eye yellows and becomes cloudy with age as a result of biological changes of the proteins inside the lens. The function of the human lens is to focus incoming light onto the back of the eye. As your lens ages,
light from the outside worlds becomes more and more distorted as it enters your eye. Difficulty reading, needing more light to read, experiencing glare and haloes at night and, even poor sleep patterns can be explained by cataract formation. The treatment for cataracts involves an almost painless, 10 minute surgery to remove the “clouded lens” or “cataract” and replace it with a man made intraocular lens implant. It is the most common surgical procedure in the US
and around the world and is considered to be an extremely successful and safe procedure with a success rate approaching 99.5%. What is laser cataract surgery? With traditional cataract surgery, all the steps of the surgery are customarily performed “manually” by the surgeon using handheld tools. Laser cataract surgerythe next evolution of cataract surgery with the Ziemer Z6 laser generally offers a greater amount of precision, predict-

ability and safety to these steps leading to potentially improve visual outcomes and more precise targets. With the Ziemer Z6 Laser System, your surgeon has the potential to offer you unmatched accuracy and a more predictable and customized cataract procedure. Based on your medical history and pre-operative evaluation, you and your surgeon will discuss the options available for your desired visual result. Together you can discuss a treatment plan which may include using the LDV Z6 to create the laser incisions in the cornea along with an advanced lens implant that may allow for improved near, intermediate or distance vision. This tailored treatment may reduce your need for glasses or contact lenses after surgery. How is laser cataract surgery different from traditional cataract surgery? In traditional cataract surgery, incisions in the cornea are made using handheld instruments including blades to access the cataract. Your surgeon will then use a surgical device to manually create a circular opening in the lens capsule of the eye that holds the cataract. The Ziemer Z6 laser can be used to make the corneal incisions precise and the opening in the lens capsule as circular as possible, in the right location, and sized to fit the replacement lens. Your surgeon can also use the laser to break up and soften the hard cataract. Softening the lens with the laser enables your surgeon to then remove the cataract more gently and with significantly less ultrasound energy than is used in traditional manual cataract surgery. What are the benefits of laser cataract surgery? • A highly customized treatment • A treatment with little or no discomfort • A potentially more precise and predictable treatment • By and large, a gentler and easier cataract removal • Generally, a more rapid visual recovery due to reduced inflammation • The opportunity to receive tailored treatment with advanced technology multifocal lenses, which may reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses after surgery Am I a suitable candidate for laser cataract surgery? Your surgeon and you will decide whether you are a suitable candidate based on your eye anatomy, type of cataract and type of lens implant that you desire. Most patients are candidates for having some of the steps of cataract surgery
performed with the Ziemer Z6 laser. How long has the procedure been performed? Thousands of cataract procedures have been successfully performed using femtosecond laser systems, and femtosecond lasers have been used in eye procedures for decades. The most familiar use of femtosecond laser technology is LASIK. Femtosecond lasers represent an advanced standard in precision laser cataract surgery and the Ziemer Z6 platform was FDA cleared in 2013. What should I expect on the day of surgery? Your day in surgery should be no different than a routine cataract case. The Ziemer Z6 laser is positioned next to the surgeon and is utilized seamlessly during the cataract surgery process. You will be given mild IV sedation that will likely keep you pleasantly unaware of the goings on in surgery. Not only is it potentially painless, there are no needles or stitches as part of the procedure. What should I expect after surgery? After surgery, you can generally expect your vision to be improved within 24 hours. Generally, patients experience no pain after surgery. Slight scratchiness of the eye is common and they prescribed eye drops will help with any of these symptoms. Many patients return to work or normal activities the next day and even drive themselves to their postop day one appointment! How long does the procedure take? You can expect to be at our center for about 2 hours, and you will be in the procedure room for only 20-25 minutes. Please call 678-688-4575 or visit our website at milaneyecenter.com for more information on how to schedule your Cataract evaluation at Milan Eye Center where compassion meets excellence in eye care.

Battling the myths of mammography By: Lynn Baxter, MD Director of women’s imaging, Northside Hospital There are no sure things in medicine, but mammography is the gold standard when it comes to diagnosing breast cancer. When caught early, the disease has a greaterthan-98% likelihood of being cured. Regular mammograms have been proven to find breast cancer at its earliest stages, when treatments are most effective. However, many women fail to take advantage of such potentially lifesaving tests because of unfounded fears. Here are five mammogram excuses debunked. I’m too busy. Mammograms take about 20 minutes, and the actual breast compression lasts for just a few seconds. Northside offers multiple convenient imaging locations across Metro Atlanta, with flexible hours including early morning, late evening and Saturday appointments.
The hospital’s ScreenAtlanta mobile mammography van also makes stops throughout the community. I can’t afford it. Most private insurance plans cover a percentage or full cost of an annual mammogram. With support from Susan G. Komen for the Cure and It’s the Journey, Northside offers funding for mammograms and other diagnostic services for qualified applicants. I’m afraid they may find something scary. Only 2 to 4 screening mammograms, of every 1,000, lead to a diagnosis of cancer, according to the ACS. A mammogram increases your treatment options by catching breast cancer early. I don’t have a family history of breast cancer. Most women (75-85%) diagnosed with breast cancer do not have a family history of the disease. It will hurt. Schedule your screening one week after your period, when your breasts are less tender, and limit caffeine a few days prior to the screen. You also can try a mild over-
the-counter pain reliever about an hour before your appointment. As the regional leader in diagnosing and treating breast cancer, Northside Hospital supports the American Cancer Society’s recommendation that all women receive annual mammograms beginning at age 40. Northside Hospital offers digital mammography at all of its imaging centers, as well as 3D mammography in Atlanta, Alpharetta and Forsyth. Dry eyes and dry eye treatment Dry eye syndrome (DES) is a condition in which there are insufficient tears to lubricate and nourish the eye. Tears are necessary for maintaining the health of the front surface of the eye and for providing clear vision. People with dry eyes either do not produce enough tears or have a poor quality of tears. Dry eye is a common and often chronic problem, particularly in older adults. The eye depends on the flow of tears to provide constant moisture and lubrication to maintain vision and comfort. Tears are a combination of water (for moisture), oils (for lubrication), mucus (for even spreading), and antibodies and special proteins (for resistance to infection). These components are secreted by special glands located around the eye called meibomian glands. When there is an imbalance in this tear system, a person may experience dry eyes. When tears do not adequately lubricate the eye, a person may experience: • Pain • Light sensitivity • A gritty sensation • A feeling of a foreign body or sand in the eye • Itching • Redness • Blurring of vision • Excessive tearing (aqueous tears instead of lipid tears)
There are several treatment options for DES including preservative-free artificial tears, punctal plugs to help conserve some of the tears in the eye, prescription medications to help increase tear production, and medicated scrub solutions to help decrease inflammation of the meibomian glands. Recent advancements in technology have helped our patients discover longer lasting relief of DES with the introduction of a new noninvasive procedure. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) has helped our patients improve the function of their meibomian glands. Many of our patients have reported their eyes feel better and their vision has improved after IPL therapy. Performed in our office, IPL is a painless procedure. First, the doctor applies IPL shields to protect the eyes from the light. Then a thin layer of cooling gel is applied to the treatment area. Next, a small handheld device is used to administer pulses of light to the eyelids and surrounding area. After the initial treatment, the majority of our patients report improvements in their symptoms. In general, most patients need 4 treatments over 4 months, and then treatment as necessary. It is recommended to our patients that they have maintenance therapy at least once a year. If you suffer from any of these symptoms and have not found relief, please contact our office for more information at 770-292-1999.

Why you can’t lose weight Obesity is the single biggest health problem in our country today. Studies have shown that most people are unable to lose weight and keep it off. The media portrays Americans as fat and lazy, but even the most disciplined regimens of calorie counting and exercise aren’t working like they should. The reason most people are so unsuccessful in controlling their weight these days is due to what we call weight loss resistance. The problem occurs as a result of toxins affecting your cells. You are bombarded with toxins every day, includ-

ing pollutants in the air you breathe, preservatives and dyes in the food you eat, and chemicals in the products you put on your skin. As a result of these toxins, your cells cannot function properly. Until we fix your cells, no amount of calorie restriction, exercise, or thyroid medication will help you lose weight. My regimen for weight loss resistance includes thorough blood work, some key supplements to address the toxic burden your cells are under, and an innovative nutrition plan you won’t find anywhere else.

Is your stubborn weight-loss problem actually a hormone problem? By: Dr. Dan Falor Do you find that no matter how much you exercise or how little you eat, you still can’t seem to get rid of that excess five, ten or twenty pounds? Well it could be that your weight problem is due to a hormone imbalance. Particularly estrogen. Estrogen balance is essential for achieving and maintaining fat loss. Excess estrogen or “estrogen dominance” causes fat gain, water retention, bloating, and many other health and wellness issues. While premenopausal
women excess estrogen tend to have more weight at the hips, menopausal women with estrogen excess exhibit more fat accumulation in falor their middle. We are constantly exposed to estrogen-like compounds in foods that contain toxic pesticides and growth hormones. These toxins are known to cause weight gain, which causes the production of more estrogen from our own
fat cells. More estrogen then increases more weight gain. Pharmaceutical hormones, such as those used in hormone-replacement therapy (HRT) or birth control pills, also increase estrogen. So, what can you do? Well, the first step is to cleanse your body of these toxic chemicals and re-balance your hormones. At the same time, nutritional recommendations and dietary changes are put in place to help your body return to a state of optimal health. If you’re reading this and thinking, “Could this work for me?” Call our office at 678-
867-7200 and schedule a consultation. You have nothing to lose, except a lifetime of accumu-
lated toxins in your body. Oh, and the excess weight.
Thyroid disorders and surgery By: Bryant T. Conger, M.D. Your thyroid gland is an organ in the neck that makes hormones to regulate certain functions in your body like metabolism, heart rate, sweating, and energy consumption. The thyroid is located in the middle of the lower neck, below the voice box, and wraps around the front half of the trachea (windpipe). You can’t always
feel a normal thyroid gland. Diseases of the thyroid are very common, affecting millions of Americans. The most common thyroid problems arean overactive gland, called hyperthyroidism or an underactive gland, called hypothyroidism.Thyroid enlargement, due to over- orunderactivity (often called a goiter). October is Eye Injury Prevention Month October is Eye Injury Prevention Month. Nearly 2.5 million people suffer eye injuries each year in the United States according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and almost half of all eye injuries occur in the home. While some injuries are unavoidable, wearing protective eyewear during home-based activities can help prevent 90% of all eye injuries. “It’s very important to use protective eyewear whenever you are exposed to flying objects, fumes, dust, household chemicals, or other items that can cause injury,” says Glenda Brown, O.D. at Thomas Eye Group. “It’s always better to be safe than risk injury.” Sports-related eye injuries are also
very common throughout the year. Every 13 minutes, an emergency room in the United States treats a sportsrelated eye injury. “We offer a variety of prescription able protective sports eyewear for children and adults at Thomas Eye Group,” says Dr. Glenda Brown. “Protective eyewear is much more stylish and cool than it was even a few years ago.” If you suffer an eye injury, it’s important to have the injury examined as soon as possible, even if it seems minor. Every month there are new scientific studies released that link Oral Health (and more specifically Periodontitis) to other more serious health risks, including heart disease, stroke and respiratory disease. Yet many individuals forgo regular dental care for themselves and for their children because they do not have dental insurance. Take a look at some of these figures: In 2008, 4.6 million children went without needed dental care because their families lacked the financial means to pay for it.1 When people don’t visit the dentist regularly, they end up in the emergency room. 60,000 ER visits for non-traumatic dental problems or other oral health issues cost Georgia taxpayers more than $23 million according to recent Pew report. The Surgeon General reports that more than 64 million work hours are lost each year because of untreated dental problems. Treatment of dental issues can help reduce the risk of more severe, and costly, medical conditions. Routine dental visits are the key to prevention. But even more troubling is the fact that families who have dental insurance still end up having to pay large amounts out-ofpocket, because their annual coverage comes with a maximum benefit. For example, if you total your car, your insurance coverage will likely provide you with a new one. Dental insurance? You’ll pay 50% for three new tires and then the annual maximum runs out. You will still need to pay 100% out-of-

It’s flu season: Here’s how to avoid the bug (NAPSI)—While flu season in the U.S. historically starts in October, most of us don’t think about it until either we get sick or a family member or co-worker does, and by then, it may be too late. One of the few facts about flu season is that it’s always unpredictable and may peak at any time in the fall, winter or even spring months. That’s why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that people get the flu shot each year as soon as vaccine is available. Many Americans do just that—however, as a society it seems we’ve become more reactive when it comes to flu season, and data supports it. A notable behavioral shift over the past few years has seen a considerable percentage of the population waiting to get their flu shots until flu activity becomes widespread. And that may not be the wisest choice. “It takes up to two weeks for the body to build full immunity following a flu shot, and you’re significantly increasing your chances of getting sick if you wait until the last minute when flu is already circulating in your community,” said Harry Leider, M.D., Walgreens chief medical officer. Flu Shots: The Earlier, the Better Flu activity most commonly peaks in the U.S. in February and January, respectively, but in recent years has peaked earlier, including hitting a December high just last season. Flu cases can be reported as early as September and October, as was the case in 2013,
and the season can run through spring months of March or April. While flu shots are particularly important for the very young, the elderly and pregnant women, the flu can be very serious for anyone, including young and healthy adults. Last season, patients between 18 and 64 years of age accounted for nearly 60 percent of flu-related hospitalizations reported to the CDC. And with this population, that can also mean lost workdays, child care issues and other economic repercussions. Flu-associated hospitalization rates last season remained highest among people 65 and older, followed by those 50 to 64 years old with the secondhighest hospitalization rate. An Everyday Effort An annual flu shot is the best preventive measure you can take, but Dr. Leider says there are small, everyday tips that can also help keep you healthy throughout the always unpredictable flu season. Dr. Leider recommends: 1. Wash your hands—this may sound simple, but always make sure to wash your hands to help protect yourself from any germs and bacteria. Sanitizers are also effective and often found in many public venues for those who don’t carry their own 2. Cover your nose and mouth—if you cough or sneeze, cover the germs! This helps ensure that you don’t spread any germs to your peers. And don’t forget to wash your hands afterward. 3. Stay home if you’re sick—if you’re
not feeling well, that doesn’t mean that everyone else around you has to feel awful, too. If you’re sick, stay home! It’s one of the easiest ways to prevent others from catching your germs. 4. Stay hydrated while traveling— dehydration can be a contributor to illness, so always drink plenty of water, especially while flying. 5. Other good health guidelines— make sure you’re eating healthy and getting enough sleep at night. Making sure your overall lifestyle is healthy can
prevent you from getting sick...or worse if you’re already feeling ill. Your Local Pharmacy Can Help Walgreens pharmacies offer flu shots daily with no appointment needed, and in most states, offer a wide range of 17 CDC-recommended vaccines, including those to protect against shingles, pneumonia, pertussis (whooping cough), meningitis, hepatitis and others. Dreaming of better sleep? By: Dr. Dan Myers Do you lose sleep due to snoring? Does your partner lose sleep due to your snoring? Do you wake up tired in the morning? Snoring is a serious condition and can be an early warning sign of sleep apnea. An estimated 160 million people are affected by snoring and many of them suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. Lack of sleep places undue stress on your heart and other major organs. Untreated Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) can lead to heart attacks, strokes and excessive daytime sleepiness. More than 100,000 people are killed or injured each year in crashes attributed to a driver who has fallen asleep at the wheel. Sufficient
sleep is fundamental to your overall health and wellness. Dr. Dan Myers of The Cosmetic Dentistry Center of Alpharetta has made treatment of this serious condition a priority. A sleep study by your physician would be recommended to determine the severity of the condition. The appropriate oral appliance or a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine would be suggested for treatment. There are many other approved types of oral devices that can give you relief and from snoring and eliminate sleep apnea. Contact Dr. Myers at 678.293.8758 for a FREE, no-obligation consultation to discuss your sleep or snoring problems.
