By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Concerned about student safety at elementary schools and frustrated with slow change at the state level, parent Beth Dowd took matters into her own hands. Dowd led a drive to create the Barnwell Elementary School “Bear Den,” a lounge area for law enforcement officers designed to increase police visibility at the school. Dowd, who has two daughters, one at Barnwell and the other at Autrey Mill Middle School, began her campaign to increase school safety this past spring. “I started petitioning some of our lawmakers just to see where we were at, and I made some calls to the Fulton County Superintendent of Schools just to see where we were with security because we had by that time a number of different school shootings in different states,” Dowd said. In March, Dowd attended the Fulton County Schools public safety meetings, where Superintendent Dr. Jeff Rose discussed emergency drills, security cameras and other safety measures the schools have implemented. “That kind of started the wheels turning for me,” Dowe said. “What can I do as a parent? How can I create more security than we have?” While grateful for the security measures Fulton County was implementing, Dowd was still concerned about the lack of police presence in elementary schools. While high schools and middle schools have designated officers, elementary schools do not. Elementary schools share an officer with a nearby school. For example, Officer Diane Moody is the Fulton County Schools police officer for Autrey Middle School, and she spends about an hour each day at Barnwell. Dowd left the public safety meetings ready to explore other solutions. “I came back from that meeting,
and the idea came to me to create a room where we could welcome local law enforcement, whether that be the Johns Creek Police Department that does our traffic or the Fulton County Schools Police Department,” Dowd said. The room would be stocked with snacks and a comfortable place for police officers to take a break. It could increase the police presence and community outreach at the school, Dowd said. Once she had the idea, Dowd brought the Barnwell administration and Parent Teacher Association onboard. The principal, Martin Neuhaus agreed to convert a small room behind the front desk into the police den, and the PTA devoted part of its budget to fund the snacks. “For me, I just love the opportunity to appreciate our officers,” Neuhaus said. “We’re very grateful to our PTA for supporting this initiative. Any time we can appreciate not only our police officers but all our first responders it’s great.” One parent donated a mini-fridge, and the PTA bought a Keurig coffee machine. The room was stocked with coffee, tea, juice, soda, muffins, chips and other snacks. Preschoolers and kindergarteners made posters to decorate the room. It was named the Bear Den to reflect the school’s mascot, and the lounge was officially opened at the beginning of this school year. “It’s good for officers to come by and get a break from the office we spend all day in,” said Johns Creek Police Officer Robert Lemke. “We can get a snack, relax, talk to the staff, and it’s good to see the kids and for them to see us.” Moody agreed. “It’s a good opportunity for the community to build a relationship with law enforcement,” she said. Another benefit is bringing the Fulton County Schools Police and Johns Creek Police together. “It’s nice when they’re all in there
I think it’s important that parents take action when they see a hole somewhere or when they see that there’s a need. Everybody is waiting for someone else to take the lead or for the governor to do something or maybe school officials.” Beth Dowd Local parent together, and there is that synergy between departments,” Dowd said. “Law enforcement nation-wide is like a family,” Moody said. “You don’t have to be a part of the same agency.” Dowd is responsible for keeping the snacks stocked, but she hopes another parent will take on the duty when her daughter graduates Barnwell. For now, she continues to plan improvements to the space, considering the feasibility of a small couch. “I think it’s important that parents take action when they see a hole somewhere or when they see that there’s a need,” Dowd said. “Everybody is waiting for someone else to take the lead or for the governor to do something or maybe school officials.” “Honestly I hope this really catches on because I feel like it gives other parents who are as concerned about school security as I am a creative idea that they can do at their school,” Dowd said.

State Bridge rezoning case evokes citizen outcry By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK , Ga. — A full house turned out Sept. 13 to hear details on two rezoning cases that could bring 200 homes to State Bridge Road near Johns Creek High School. A crowd of more than 100 raised concerns about traffic, loss of tree canopy and the impact on stormwater, schools and surrounding property values if the projects proceed. The developers, Atlanta-based The Providence Group, submitted an application in early September to rezone eight properties on 24 acres to a Community Unit Plan District, which would allow a density of nine residential units per acre. Since 1971, the lots have been zoned R-1, which permits up to two units per acre. The land is currently underbuilt with eight homes across the 24 acres. The project consists of two separate applications, as one lot is split from the others by a tract of land owned by the Medlock Bridge neighborhood. State Bridge Road East, or zoning case RZ-18-006, is 19 acres. The developers are proposing a gated 174-unit subdivision with 104 townhomes, 42 stacked townhomes and 28 quadraplexes. The application also requests
a concurrent variance to reduce the 30-foot landscape strip to 15 feet along State Bridge Road. The smaller property, State Bridge Road West or RZ-18-007, would hold 34 townhomes on 4.3 acres, with concurrent variances to allow encroachment into the 25-foot zoning buffer and 10foot improvement setback. Most of the property surrounding the proposed development is low-density single-family homes. Across the street is a townhome community, Cameron Parc, and to the east is Johns Creek High School. According to the Providence Group, the majority of its clients are empty nesters in their 50s and 60s who would like to downsize while staying in the area, with a secondary interest in young families. The Providence Group has built several townhome communities across North Atlanta, including Merrimont, Abberley Towneship and Abbotts Bridge Place in Johns Creek in the early 2000s. The units would have 3 or 4 bedrooms. The price range would be in from the mid $300,000s to mid $400,000s. There would be no age restrictions. Several citizens questioned the claim that the community would mostly service older couples, arguing that the quality of the schools would attract young families. The rezoning application included

These estimations project the larger property will generate 81 trips in the morning peak hour and 97 in the evening, while the smaller lot would generate 17 trips in the morning and 23 in the evening. The public suggested these numbers underestimate the traffic impact, noting that for Johns Creek “rush hour” can last for several hours. Trey Holladay, the president of the
Johns Creek Community Association said the backlash seen at the three-hour meeting was “just a taste” of what is to come. “What you’ve seen tonight is a full gallery just at the public participation meeting. It’s very rare that you see this kind of outcry and I’ll just call it opposition because that’s what it appears to be,” Holladay said. Dennis Webb, a land use attorney representing The Providence Group, said the developers are listening to the communities concerns, but the conversation should focus on the negative impacts not the density itself. “We’ve got some stuff we can look at,” Webb said. “We can do some more studies on traffic and trees, like we discussed. We can talk a little more about impacts like stormwater and things of that nature. We can’t deal with a no. ‘We don’t want this’ is not something we can work with. ‘We want 75 homes developed R-1’ is not something we can work with.” The Sept. 13 meeting also included a presentation by Emory Johns Creek Hospital on zoning case RZ-18-005 to remove a 110-bed condition to allow conversion of medical office space into bed space. There was no public pushback to the hospital’s plan. These cases are scheduled to go before the Planning Commission Nov. 7.

ity within the city,” said Assistant Public Works Director Chris Haggard. “Medlock Bridge is the only north/south route in this area, so this just provides our local traffic another opportunity to get around the Tech Park, Bell, Boles area without having to use Medlock Bridge Road.” The project would be funded by the transportation sales tax (TSPLOST). In 2016, the connector road was identified as a Tier I project, the highest priority. . At that time the projected price was $2.5 million; however, the most recent calculations estimate the new road could cost between $6 and $7.5 million, depending on which plan the city adopts. “There are two alternatives. We’ve gone through a number of them, but these are the two that have floated to the top at the moment,” Haggard said. The $6 million proposal would have the road connect to Johns Creek Parkway west of the Alcon Laboratories facility, while the $7.5 million concept shows the road running between Alcon and the Easthaven subdivision, connecting to Technology Circle. “At this point I’m going to let the public comment, and then we’ll take those comments as part of the pros and cons before we present it,” Haggard said.
The Bell and Boles corridor is situated to grow over the next few years. A neighborhood adjacent to the proposed road, Bellmoore, could add more than 600 new residents to the area, and two nearby churches, Johns Creek Presbyterian and Johns Creek United Methodist, each have plans for continued growth and expansion. The Technology Park area is also expected to develop along with the new City Hall and Linear Park. Sidewalk trails along the new road would create a pedestrian connection between the two growing areas. The segment that connects to Bell Road has already been built by the Bellmoore subdivision. The city would be responsible for the remaining 2,500 feet, about half a mile. There was a public input meeting on the new road Sept. 12. The city also accepts citizen input through its website at johnscreekga.gov/Residents/PublicWorks/TSPLOST/Road-ConstructionIdeas. After processing citizen input, the staff will finalize the proposal and present it to the City Council, who will have ultimate say on whether the project moves forward.

Simulation teaches faith leaders lessons on poverty By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Tired, stressed, hungry, frustrated, baffled. Participants in a two-hour simulation to examine poverty went through them all. The exercise, organized by North Fulton Community Charities, was designed to give local religious leaders an idea of life for low-income families. The North Fulton Interfaith Roundtable, a meeting of religious leaders from across the area, participated in the simulation Sept. 13 at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church. Each participant was assigned a new identity and “family.” Each of seven families had its own set of challenges. Some participants played single mothers with two teenagers; others were teenagers with children of their own. Throughout the room, stations represented different aspects of a community: the school, landlord, utility company, employer, social services, bank, quick cash lender, pawn shop, police, grocer and a charity organization. For an additional challenge, many of the activities required transportation passes to represent gas money, bus fair or time spent walking. Several partici-

Sharla Calloway explains the NFCC poverty simulation at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church Sept. 13. pants said this was the most difficult part of the simulation, and particularly
relevant in the Atlanta area The scenario consisted of four
10-minute sessions, each representing a week. Those playing children had to spend five minutes in school, and adults had to spend as much time at work if they wanted to be paid their full salary. Participants soon realized how little time this left for paying bills, buying groceries and other tasks, especially when they had to wait in line at many of the stations. In the first “week,” only one family remembered to buy groceries. By the end of the simulation, nearly all of the families were threatened with eviction. Only one person showed up for work all four weeks, and many of the teens stopped attending school to find jobs of their own. . The participants had two main takeaways. One was that little obstacles can quickly add up to a desperate situation. “Things kept stacking up,” said the Rev. Jason Zemke, assistant minister at Mt Pisgah United Methodist. Zemke played a single mother with two teenagers. “It’s not easy. Not easy at all,” Zemke said. “I have $15, a kid in jail, a kid working in a pawn shop. I have a parttime job, but it’s not enough to keep me from getting evicted.”

NORTH FULTON, Ga. – After a lengthy review of the process used to realign school attendance zones, the Fulton School System has determined it will maintain the existing policy it has used for nearly 20 years, with a few tweaks for clarity. The decision to hold to the current course was based on input received from two lightly attended redistricting information meetings held last spring in both South and North Fulton. The forums were intended to explain the redistricting process and gather community comment. An online survey was also available for additional comment. Only 23 people attended the public meetings, and approximately 200 comments were submitted online, noted Yngrid Huff-Jones, chief planner for Fulton Schools. “Based on the feedback we received, parents’ overwhelming concerns were those based on a lack of knowledge and understanding of the current process, rather than the policy itself,” Huff-Jones said. She noted the redistricting policy has proven successful since 2000 in more than 30+ school redistrictings countywide. The district does acknowledge there needs to be more informa-
tion provided to the community prior to redistricting. “To help parents understand the process more clearly, staff has recommended clarifying language in the redistricting procedure as well as adding an informational meeting before the process starts,” Huff-Jones said. She noted the pre-session will be called “Redistricting 101- A Beginners Course” and will typically occur one month prior. “The intent is to allay concerns about the process and to clearly define the process used in changing attendance boundaries,” Huff-Jones said. Moving forward, she said a few other tools will be implemented to increase community understanding of the redistricting process. A video detailing the process will be developed, and Fulton planning staff will attend board member community meetings prior to any future redistrictings to answer questions. While longtime parents of students in North Fulton schools are familiar with attendance zone adjustments, new parents will have fewer opportunities to go through the process. Huff-Jones said there are no planned rezonings in North Fulton at this time, including any tweaks of boundaries. Redistricting generally occurs when new high schools come on line, or when population changes impact enrollment. The only high school planned in North Fulton in the next five years is the STEM high school in downtown Alpharetta. That school will have open boundaries which will not impact existing attendance zones.
Fulton Schools redistricting criteria Redistrictings are directed by the Fulton Schools Board, using board-approved criteria. Primary Criteria • Geographic proximity – Distance traveled using available routes of transportation. • Instructional capacity – Number of students who can be accommodated at the school. • Projected enrollment – Number of students assigned to a school, taking into account the future projected enrollment. Secondary Criteria Used if primary criteria indicate more than one option, options are evaluated on the basis of: • Traffic patterns • Previous rezoning • Special programs in place that require additional space over and above a regular classroom • School feeder alignment for elementary, middle and high school attendance boundaries

rigged or broken to show how quickly that can snowball,” said Sharla Calloway, NFCC director of volunteer services. The pawn shop made over $1,000 in profits by shortchanging those that came to sell their items. The landlord tried to evict families without giving them a 30day notice. Transportation passes valued at $1 were sold for $2 to $4. “I’ve charged $25 to $40 to cash checks, and out of desperation people have paid it,” said Shaheen Bharde, a NFCC board member who ran the pawn shop and quick cash station. “It’s a good life being corrupt.” Bharde added that the simulation can be as enlightening for the volunteers running the stations as it is for the participants playing the families. “It’s scary being desperate, but it’s even scarier being in control, to see how easy it is to be corrupted,” Bharde said. Even when they knew they were being swindled, many participants still returned to the predatory quick cash lender and pawn shop because they had no other option. The Rev. David Kenley, senior minister of the Johns Creek Christian Church, said the experience was eyeopening. “At these places you feel like you’re being taking advantage of because you’re stuck,” Kenley said. “You can’t do what other people would do in your situation.” Only about half of the families sought help from the charity station, but those that did came back. Calloway said this happens in almost every simulation and is a fair representation of what NFCC sees. NFCC has been running these simulations for a few years, for schools and businesses. The program on Sept. 13 was unique for bringing together faith leaders from across the region. “We hope that by bringing them together and making them work together,

Arts Center launches digital lab By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek Arts Center has broadened its creative focus, introducing a digital pallet to its array of traditional art programs. For two decades, the Arts Center has offered programs in painting, drawing and ceramics, but thanks to new computer class space, the center is offering Photoshop and digital arts classes. “When we looked at expanding our program, our thought was what can we offer in our space that we have not offered before?” said Stuart Miller, executive director of the Johns Creek Arts Center. A digital arts lab seemed like the perfect new program, Miller said. It could offer a wide variety of new classes while taking up relatively little space in the already tight building. “It opens up so many new avenues for artists,” Miller said. “It really doesn’t replace traditional art forms as much as it’s a new tool for enhancing it.” Miller believes the Johns Creek digital arts lab, modeled after a similar program in Ann Arbor, Mich., may be the first of its kind in Georgia. “I think we’re going to attract people
who may have been scared to try their hand at art,” Miller said. “I think we’re also going to find people who are already practicing art and want these additional tools to enhance what they are already doing.” For those who are intimidated by paints or clay, the digital lab offers a new way to practice art. “This is an art form that’s very accessible,” Miller said. “You know, people say I can’t draw a straight line, and with digital arts you can do even more than that. You can draw beautiful things.” The lab holds eight computers, each equipped with Adobe Creative Cloud software and Wacom drawing tablets. Some classes will focus on making art in the digital environment while others will dive into how to use the Adobe software, Miller said. This fall, the digital lab will host classes for teens and adults. For adults, Intro to Photoshop 101 will be offered Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. beginning Sept. 20, and digital illustration will be offered Thursdays 10 a.m. to noon starting Oct. 18. For ages 13 to 18, there is a digital graphic novel class Wednesday 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a digital illustration class Thursday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Classes

The four classes are a “soft launch” for the Arts Center, Miller said. In the future, the lab will host more specialized classes, such as photo restoration and animation. “The kind of things you have to drive into downtown Atlanta to get right now we will now be offering here,” Miller said. The popularity of the digital lab is
already apparent. So far, 21 students from William and Reed Academy have registered to take classes in the new digital lab, double what the Arts Center expected. The Johns Creek Arts Center is located at 6290 Abbotts Bridge Road, Building 700. More information about programs can be found on the Arts Center website, johnscreekarts.org.

Civil War Union Soldier James A Johnston fought in the battle of Gettysburg.
In the interest of others:
The price of freedom By LEE CHADWICK Guest contributor James A. Johnston was 19 years-old when he and his regiment began their 600-mile march to Gettysburg in 1862. And he was 95 when he returned there Chadwick for the 75th Commemoration of that battle in 1938. It seems impossible to think that James and 2 year-old John McCain could have both attended that event. When I realized that my sister (who is still living) had been bounced upon that man’s knee, it made that ancient Civil War something brand new and very real to me. My mother‘s grandfather - a freer of slaves. What could have made him go? How did the issue of slavery have real relevance to him or to his community? And then, what about the other 360,000 northern soldiers who lost their lives in the interest of others. Imagine the negative impact of leaving families made up of women and children to face the natural dangers of a world without any convenience; with real vulnerability to much worse. This choice was made purposefully. Was it actually undertaken to gain the freedom of strangers? People whose welfare had no direct impact on these men or the lives of those they loved. I have come to understand that they were defining the nation they wanted America to exemplify: A country built on
freedom. This was a time of nation building - by farmers and teachers and blacksmiths and barbers. Justice and righteousness were the tools of a people determined to create a civil society. Their intention was to create individual sovereignty unlike the monarchies of Europe and the rest of the world. So how is it possible to have a conversation about race in America that is not informed by the sacrifice of those 360,000 mostly white men given to gain the freedom of slaves? I once felt like a revolutionary when I boarded buses to walk in Washington D.C. with Dr. King, but I was not; not anymore than those who choose now to take a knee. In a world where we are all hungry for evidence of wisdom, or even common sense — for compassion and natural virtue, I offer this column. It will be about how human experience is altered by those serving ideas or ideals beyond their own personal needs. How real transformation is possible when communities of people join to build solutions to inequality. You will be inspired by their insight, but I also hope you’ll be empowered by them to join in building a more civil and inclusive society. “Do not despair of our present difficulties. We believe always in the promise and greatness of America, because nothing is inevitable here.” John McCain, 1936-2018. Be a part of the conversation: lee@real-altruists.com www.real-altruists.com

Johns Creek commemorates victims of 9/11 By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Public safety officers, government officials, students and other Johns Creek residents gathered at the Mark Burkhalter Ampitheater in Newtown Park the morning of Sept. 11 to honor those who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Organized by the Rotary Club of Johns Creek, the commemoration ceremony included addresses from Rotary ambassador Roger Wise, Police Chief Ed Densmore and Fire Chief Jeff Hogan. “That event brought our country to our knees for the first time in a long time,” Densmore said. “But it also unified us in a way that I don’t think we’ve been in a long time, and I think we’ve let some of that slip. But it’s days like that you have to remember that.” Of the 2,977 people killed in the Sept. 11 attacks, 343 were New York City firefighters, 60 were law enforcement officers and eight were civilian paramedics, making it the deadliest day for first responders in U.S. history. Hogan called on those in attendance to remember that. “For those of us that put on a uniform every day, we will never forget,” he

The Autrey Middle School Chorus, directed by Vanessa Edwards, performed the national anthem, “God Bless America” and “God Bless the USA.”
The commemoration also included a narration of the events filling the morning of Sept. 11, 2001 and the ringing of a bell to honor those who died. State Sen. John Albers, Fulton County Commissioner Liz Hausmann and City Council members John Bradberry, Steve Broadbent and Stephanie Endres were in attendance.
After the event, Sugo Kitchen provided free lunch to all Johns Creek police officers and firefighters on Sept. 11. The Johns Creek Public Safety Foundation, a nonprofit that assists injured or fallen Johns Creek firefighters and police officers and their families if they are killed in the line of duty, accepted donations at the event.

The Raiders’ victory was their third straight over the Greyhounds. Kevin Watkins put Alpharetta on the scoreboard with a 24-yard rush late in the first quarter before Pope tied the game late in the second period. Another touchdown rush from Watkins put the Raiders back in the lead, but the Greyhounds took advantage of a Raiders fumble to knot the game midway through the fourth. Alpharetta responded quickly with a 92-yard pass from Will Gerdes to Austin Frazier, but the PAT was missed, making the score 20-14. After forcing a punt on Pope’s ensuing drive, Alpharetta took valuable minutes off the clock and iced the game with a touchdown rush from Dylan Merrell with just over a minute remaining. We still want to make sure Avalon keeps its crown as being a dynamic location. But they’re in different stages now. They have their momentum, while we’ve got to get that momentum started in North Point. Jim Gilvin, Alpharetta mayor 16 | Johns Creek Herald | September 20, 2018
City further refines code for future North Point development Plan sets theme for revitalization within district By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A framework for major revitalization of Alpharetta’s North Point area could be in place within the next two months. Alpharetta city leaders met with TSW design consultant Caleb Racicot Sept. 11 for a special workshop to hammer out final details of revised zoning and building requirements for the district. With two massive mixed-use developments completed over the past 10 years, the city is now turning its focus to North Point, which has suffered sizeable losses recently with the closures of Sears and Toys ‘R’ Us retailers. “We’re focusing now on the North Point corridor much like the city focused on Avalon and City Center in the past,” Mayor Jim Gilvin said. Avalon, which opened four years ago, and the nearly completed City Center already have established momentum as commercial and residential attractions. “We want to continue to make sure that City Center turns out like it needs to and downtown continues to grow and prosper,” Gilvin said. “We still want to make sure Avalon keeps its crown as being a dynamic location. But they’re in different stages now. They have their momentum, while we’ve got to get that momentum started in North Point.” The focus of the workshop was to put the final touches on codes governing the size, uses and makeup of developments
for North Point. Much of the discussion revolved around development requirements that fit into a designation for an ecodistrict — an urban planning method that integrates sustainable development and reduces the ecological footprint of projects. Racicot presented a slate of suggestions governing allowable uses and building sizes for construction in the district. Suggestions included, for example, setting percentages for the amount of space a building should set aside for community or amenity space. Plans also call for limiting residential-use building sizes to a maximum footprint of 50,000 square feet. Racicot said the residential codes were meant to fit between the allowances provided at Avalon and at City Center for residential. The code also suggests limiting density to eight units per acre in most cases. Most of the discussion at the workshop focused on requirements for open space. Racicot said the plan is set up with open space requirements in the zoning and the overlays within the district. Our initial proposal to exempt smaller sites from open space standards may have been too extreme,” Racicot said. For a non-residential development would be required to have at least 5 percent amenity space, things like outdoor dining or a rooftop patio. City Councilman John Hipes suggested that sliding back the scale for open space requirements on smaller developments might encourage developers to pursue more small tracts to circum-

Community Development Director Kathi Cook said she doubts anyone would take that approach because each property is governed by setback requirements, and that would deter developers from taking a piecemeal approach to building. Though there was no general consensus among council members, one idea was to apply a uniform percentage devoted to civic or amenity space to all developments, possibly 15 percent. One suggestion was to give smaller properties leeway in how the open space is used, whether for private or public access. Other areas addressed at the workshop included determining block sizes, which are, for now, set with a perimeter of 1,600 feet. Following the workshop, the mayor
stressed that property owners will ultimately determine what’s to be built at North Point. The city, he said, is trying to provide some guidelines that follow the North Point Livable Centers Initiative. “I think the general consensus is we want to be an area at North Point that is walkable, does have the same type of mixed-use development that’s in Avalon or City Center but with a focus more on technology and greenspace – actual living things like trees and grass where people can relax and get away for a little bit,” Gilvin said. Barring any snags, the updated codes and overlay for the district should be ready to go before the Alpharetta Planning Commission in October, then be considered for City Council approval the following month.

Sandy Springs eyes north end redevelopment Knowing when Task force suggests economic incentives Sandy Springs has put together a task force charged with coming up with a residential and retail strategy for the north end of its city – namely that stretch of Ga. 9 that runs from Abernathy Road Geoff smith north to Roswell’s Assurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com southern border on the river. This long stretch of state highway could very well be one of the most nondescript developed roads in North Fulton. The area was mostly developed in the 1980s when strip malls and contemporary condos were in fashion, and when there was no City of Sandy Springs and every developer with half a pulse got approval for projects from a very distant Fulton County government in downtown Atlanta. Growing up in Roswell, the only time we really went south of the River on 9 was when my Pop Warner football team traveled to play those Sandy Springs Saints. When I got to high school, because I lived on the East Side of Roswell, I got to attend Crestwood High School. The school was just south of the river and east of Ga. 9. It was built in the 1970s and put out of its misery in 1991. If you ever saw Crestwood, you’d know what I mean. (The fact that the building was mostly demolished after only 20 years of existence should say something.) It was rebuilt and today is a much-improved Sandy Springs Middle School. There were great memories there. Our football team could very well have been the most conditioned team in the state. We didn’t win a whole lot, but there was a huge hill surrounding most of our practice field. And if you would have

Before every game, we’d get in the buses and head over to a nearby Steak and Ale for steaks and potatoes. Today, that restaurant is the North River Tavern. There are many reasons to know about the North River Tavern. But for some of you, it is the place on the other side of the river that you go to after Canton Street shuts down. It kind of reminds me of the bar in the old movie “Footloose” that they’d go to just outside the city limits so they could dance. If you are not Ubering to the North River Tavern after midnight, the other reasons you might head down this stretch of road is to avoid Ga. 400 traffic, or to get your tag or driver’s license renewed. A select few of you might also be heading from the Ferrari dealership in Alpharetta down to the Lamborghini dealership. The area has been largely ignored. Since becoming a city in 2005, Sandy Springs has had its hands full with organizing a government that suddenly had oversight of more than 105,000 residents and a workforce that includes the headquarters of four Fortune 500 companies, numerous regional headquarters and more than 5,500 businesses. But by a wide margin, most of that is south of Abernathy Road. There is a huge difference between north and south Sandy Springs. According to a report the city published earlier this year, the median in-

come of residents living in the southern part of the city is $102,960, while those living on the north end earn $57,595. In a recent article in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul said he appointed members of the nonprofit community to the task force to ensure this area remains affordable for those on the lower end of the income ladder. These include “people who work in the restaurants and retail stores, and in landscaping and other jobs that we collectively call the essential economy,” he said. “People working at the hospitals, teachers, police and firefighters, and middle managers in the corporate realm.” One member of the task force said it will look at ways to incentivize redevelopment that will “change some of the retail development patterns.” The article mentioned Tax Allocation Districts, Community Improvement Districts and new transit improvements that could have a significant impact on this stretch of road. A key success factor for small business owners is knowing when they need help. Do you reach out internally and externally to others when you think you need help? dick jones Assistance Founder & President Jones Simply Sales from others can make a big difference in getting things done, and not having to learn something from scratch if you can get help from someone else. When you start a new small business, it seems like you need to learn a million new things. Well, maybe not a million, but it’s a very lengthy list of things you’ll either need to learn how to do, or get help from someone else. For example, small business owners are responsible for their operations, sales, financial and risk management, hiring and retaining staff, information technology, taxes and many other things. No small business owner knows everything about everything. If you’re running a small business, think hard about what your core competencies are. Equally important is knowing when you need help. With the areas you lack competence in, you have two options: learn how to do it yourself; or hire someone or use an outside contractor who has the skills you don’t. There is no problem trying to learn new skills and being able to do more on your own, but the compromise is the time that it takes. Knowing when you need help will ultimately help you run your small business more successfully.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The haunted house on the corner of South Main Street and Wills Road is making way for a new senior housing community. The old House on Horror Hill building, a Halloween favorite among residents, was recently demolished to make way for construction on the Village at Wills Park. The Alpharetta City Council approved the 130-unit project last June on the seven acres that formerly housed the haunted house, a place of worship and a barn. The project is being developed by
Village Park Senior Living, which has existing branches in Peachtree Corners and on Morris Road in Alpharetta. The new Wills Road location will offer a “unique, farmhouse-style senior living community” made up of assisted living and memory care. The developer’s plans include a main building and several single-story cottages and duplexes, as well as an independent living portion. As set forth by one of the conditions, the exteriors of these buildings will be made up of at least 40 percent stone or brick. A bus shelter will likewise be built near the development. Five oak trees within the property will be preserved.
Appen Media welcomes interns ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Two Milton High School seniors are taking on the role of intern with Appen Media this school year. Jillian DiMarco is from Alpharetta and hopes to go to Auburn University next year to DiMARCO study journalism and mass communications. DiMarco is involved in the National Honors Society, student council and is the girls varsity tennis captain. She said she plans to use her communication skills at her internship, while she masters AP Style and learns techniques that will help her in college and at a future job. “I wanted to intern with a newspaper because I love to write and wanted to get the hands-on experience,” DiMarco said. “I chose Appen because I live down the street from their office and wanted to be able to have people I know read my
writing.” Nikaya Glatt, or Nik for short, was born in China, but now resides in Roswell. She wants to attend the University of Georgia or Clemson University next fall. Glatt is vacillating between a double major GLATT in psychology and literature, or a major in literature with a minor in either business and communications or marketing. At Milton, Glatt is part of the National Honor Society and the National English Honor Society. She is active in other extracurricular activities outside of school. “I wanted to intern with a newspaper company because I wanted to broaden my experience of literature with a different type of genre,” Glatt said. “I hope to become a better writer and participate in a little bit of everything before the end of the semester.”

Laser therapy comes to Johns Creek Class IV Laser Therapy is the most advanced pain relief technology available to the public and it’s now available right here in Johns Creek. Laser therapy uses a process called photo-bio-modulation to enhance your body’s ability to heal itself. Laser Therapy works by flooding the tissues with photons, energizing the damaged cells and increasing circulation to the painful area. Treatments are fast, painless and don’t require any down time but the therapeutic effect continues to soothe and heal long after you leave the office. Laser Therapy is FDA cleared to treat pain, inflammation, arthritis, and muscle spasms and are a great alternative to medications and injections. Laser Therapy can treat a host of conditions including rotator cuff injuries, post operative pain and soreness (for any surgery), frozen shoulder, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, neck pain, muscle strains, low back pain, migraines, and can even be used to relieve pain associated with diabetic neuropathy. Johns Creek Physical Therapy is the only medical practice in the area to offer Laser Therapy technology. “In the fourteen months we’ve had the Laser, I
am constantly amazed at what it does for our patients,” says Marc Stewart, PT, owner at Johns Creek Physical Therapy.

Best Of North Atlanta Presented By
First, you must have a great staff with a helping attitude! Everyone at Johns Creek Physical Therapy excels at their role within the practice. From the greeting at the front desk, handling your insurance, to the actual therapy experience, we have the best in the business. Office manager Holly Casey leads the front office while Marc Stewart, PT (Physical Therapist), Mona Mistry, MPT (Master’s Degree of Physical Therapy) and Archana Jayan, DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy), evaluate and treat a host of orthopedic conditions. Supporting the therapy staff is Laura Ainley, PTA (Physical Therapist Assistant) and Denise Kuechenmeister, ATC (Athletic Trainer Certified). Our team brings a helping attitude with one goal in mind, and that’s your recovery. Second, you must have a commitment to customer service and a vested interest in helping your patients achieve their goals. 15 years ago when this practice was started, the slogan “The Way Therapy Should Be!” was adopted. This motto drives our commitment to our service. The staff at Johns Creek Physical Therapy knows the value of a customer! Too many times in health care people complain about feeling like they are just another number. We believe you should get first class personal service every time you come in. Our team is genuinely concerned with your well being and your success is our mission. Just listen to this testimonial from Roberta Goldberg:
“The staff at Johns Creek Physical Therapy is simply the best! Each staff member, from the front office staff to the therapists to Marc himself showed genuine interest in helping me completely recover from the condition and pain which brought me to their facility. I highly recommend Johns Creek Physical Therapy.” Third, you must have skilled Physical Therapists and offer the latest treatments and technology. The therapy team brings over 40 years of combined experience. This experience means there is not much we haven’t seen. It also means we can develop a plan of action that can resolve your problem quickly and easily. Every patient receives a customized plan of care tailored to their diagnosis. We treat a variety of orthopedic conditions from neck and shoulder pain all the way down to foot and heel pain and most everything in between. If you have had surgery, we can help with that too. We are the only practice in the area to offer Class IV Deep Tissue Laser Therapy. Laser Therapy is the most advanced form of pain relief available to the public and has been a great addition to our office. Also available are services like Trigger Point Dry Needling and manual therapy. There are a number of treatments and services available to help treat any condition.

For the past two years we have hosted a monthly educational seminar as part of our Health and Healing Seminar Series. These events can be found on our
Marc C. Stewart, PT

website at johnscreekpt.com and topics rotate each month. The topics covered include: Neck and Shoulder Pain, Back Pain and Sciatica, Hip and Knee Pain, as well as Foot and Heel Pain. These seminars are always informative and offer a lot of information on why you might be hurting. Finally, what makes Johns Creek Physical Therapy great? RESULTS! A friendly personality and a warm environment only go so far. You must get results for the patient. And results are what we are known for. Countless times our patients say, “My doctor couldn’t believe how much better I was doing!” We wonder why you would you ever expect anything less? Most of our patients are blown away at how quickly they recover. If you are currently doing physical therapy somewhere else and you’re still looking for answers, or maybe you went to the therapy “down the hall” from the doctor because you thought it would be convenient, but you’re not getting the results you were hoping for, give our office a call and come experience “The Way Therapy Should Be!” We’re so confident you will notice a difference, we will even offer you a FREE consultation with mention of this article. No physician referral is required unless specified by your insurance. Johns Creek Physical Therapy 4060 Johns Creek Parkway Suite H Suwanee, GA 30024

An interview with Dr. Taylor By Alyssa MacNamera I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Taylor after his 2018 Best of win to ask him about his recent success. As we sit in the bright, clean, welcoming waiting room of Premier Dermatology, Dr. Taylor is holding his newborn son, his third boy, only 15 days old. He apologizes for the squeaks of the sleeping baby and smiles apologizing when those squeaks interrupt our interview. After speaking with him for an hour, I am well aware of the reasons for his renown. He is warm, instantly calming, respectful and shockingly intelligent. Despite having a youthful face that, at first glance, might make you question his experience, his knowledge and surgical ability are well established: both are touted in patient reviews and displayed in a vast surgical portfolio. He is loved and respected by his patients and his staff, and it is easy to see why. He is, to say the least, a genuine individual and accomplished physician. Congratulations on winning both Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist of North Atlanta! As a new practice, it is quite an honor to win these titles, let alone winning Best Vein Specialist 2 years in a row. To what do you attribute to your success? Dr. Taylor: Well thank you very much! You’re right. It is an honor to win and I am extremely appreciative of the accolade. I am very fortunate to live and work in an area that has exceptional healthcare including outstanding dermatologists and remarkable Mohs surgeons. Moreover, residents of North Fulton are smart consumers, who do their research on their potential physicians. Given this, I truly value the confidence that my patients have placed in me. I don’t have any hidden secret to Premier Dermatology’s success per se. I have been trained by exceptional physicians and I work with exceptional people. I strive to always be patient-centered, to put the patient first, to read up, perform extra research for my patients and advocate for them. Quality controls, back-up systems and patient care processes are an area of special interest for me. I have been an airplane pilot for over ten years, and I believe the strategies for safety and quality that aviation emphasizes have translated into improved processes within my own practice. But most importantly, I really owe so much to our amazing staff! Given that we are a small practice with only 7 staff members, I am beyond thankful for their expertise, compassion and the concern that they have for our patients.
We spend a lot of time together given our 10 to 12 hour work days, so it is invaluable that we all get along and not only like our jobs but strive to excel and improve our processes. We’ve been open 18 months now and are constantly Dr. Taylor trying to improve wherever we can. I think that’s part of our success: patients recognize our genuine concern and commitment to excellence. Is there something you feel sets yourself apart from the other physicians in the area? Dr. Taylor: Actually I do believe I spend an unusual amount of time with my patients. As a procedural dermatologist, I am used to a smaller volume of patients with longer visits so that translates over to my general dermatology patients. (With a laugh) Granted sometimes that means my schedule runs behind, but ultimately our patients leave knowing that they received thorough, high quality care. And I appreciate the understanding my patients show me, because I think that they can tell that if I am running behind that it is because I chose to give a prior patient the time he or she needed rather than run on schedule. Regarding Mohs surgery and vein care, my fellowship covered multiple aspects of surgical dermatology, so I feel that I am able to address some of the extra concerns that patients may have that would otherwise be referred out to other specialists, and I perform these services at the level you would expect from someone who is fellowship-trained and board-certified. For example, I can treat medically significant vein disease with various procedures such as laser ablation and foam sclerotherapy then, once resolved, clear up the cosmetic vein issues with sclerotherapy or laser treatments. I am also one of the only physicians in Georgia with the ability to cure melanoma with true Mohs surgery. In general, these would be treated by different specialists or would be treated using non-equivalent techniques. Anything else you’d like to say? Dr. Taylor: I really just want to say thank you very much! Thank you to our staff: you are valued and wonderful and we wouldn’t be continuing to excel without each and every one of you! Also thank you so very much to all of our patients and our community! Your confidence and support is greatly appreciated and rewarding. I look forward to continuing to strive to provide patients with exceptional care.
Jordan Orthodontics thanks you By Dr. Jeff Jordan Wow! We just celebrated our 30th year in Alpharetta and we are so thankful for the opportunity to help so many patients “Love your Smile!” My staff and I often run into former patients and parents around town as we live, work, and play in the area. When I run into a patient or parent, I often pull up the patient’s before and after photos on my phone and we usually have a chuckle and thank God for the profession of orthodontics. Many thanks to all the patients that have allowed us to be a part of their lives! Our first office was located where the Avalon is now, so we’ve seen the area transform from a small town into a bustling metropolis. We moved to our current location on North Point Parkway in 1996. Many of our earliest patients are now bringing in their own kids. I always get a kick out of showing the current teen patients the pictures and even models of their mom and dad’s teeth way back when. In some cases, we have treated 3 generations of the same family. We are so thankful for the loyal following that we have received over the years. We also want to thank our patients for voting us “best” orthodontic office for the last five years! You don’t win many awards after high school, so it is
a great honor to be recognized. We have seen over 22,000 new patients over the years, so we have a little head start. Experience counts, and we have a lot of that. Because we take before and after photos on each and every patient, we have a huge portfolio of different orthodontic problems and treatment options. So no matter what your smile looks like, we have seen something similar or worse! We can show you the before and after photos of someone else’s treatment that had a situation that is similar to your situation. With the help of these visual aids, we can help you visualize the treatment outcome and the options. Thank you to all the patient’s who have referred friends and neighbors over the years. We truly appreciate your recommendation. State of the art medical, robotic surgery experts for women The field of gynecologic medicine has advanced by leaps and bounds over the last several years. Gone is the necessity for large incisions and long recoveries. According to Dr. John Reyes, Dr. Ingrid Reyes, Dr. Natu Mmbaga, Dr. Annie Kim, Dr. Stacey Pereira and Dr. Christy Kenkel of Modern Ob/Gyn, minimally invasive procedures are almost always the best options for patients. Heavy bleeding and painful cycles can now be treated with same day convenient in-office procedures that require no downtime and can be done in the office. “There are so many great options for women; it’s our job to get that information to them and make them aware they don’t need large incisions, long hospital stays, or painful recovery times,” Dr. John Reyes said. “da Vinci robotic surgery is also an amazing service.” Endometriosis, pelvic pain, fibroids, cysts and other common issues are sometimes best addressed with robotic surgery. As the first surgeons to perform da Vinci gynecologic robotic surgeries at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Dr. Ingrid and Dr. John Reyes pioneered the implementation of this fast-growing service in our community. Patients benefit from robotic surgery by having less risk for complications, short overnight hospital
stays, faster recovery times, and minimal pain. Modern Ob/Gyn dedicates its gynecologic practice to minimally invasive surgeries and is an experienced

leader in our community for robotic gynecologic surgery, performing these procedures at Emory Johns Creek Hospital and Northside Hospital-Forsyth.
The physicians at Modern ObGyn enjoy providing second opinions and consultations because they believe it is vital to make patients aware of their choices. “We really value educating our patients so they understand their medical issues, why certain treatments are better than others, and what their options are for treatment,” said Dr. Ingrid

Remodeling Expo Center North Atlanta’s remodeling powerhouse
This company has solved North Atlanta’s “Builder Grade” kitchen and bathroom problem for over 500 homeowners. And they’re just getting warmed up. Remodeling Expo Center was created over 18 years ago by Peter Schnieper and John Hogan, both former “Big Six” consultants, private equity partners and real estate developers. Impressive at first glance, but their real strength is building businesses through the recruitment of solid management and service delivery teams. Hogan speaks the language of a former venture capitalist using terms like scalability, ERP and design excellence, while Peter, who handles the installation department, speaks the language of building code compliance and manufacturers installation procedures. Remodeling Expo Center was created to offer cost effective and awesomely gorgeous remodeling solutions to the 30,000+ homes in North Atlanta, built in the 1980’s and 90’s with low grade or “builder grade” finishes. “We offer a rare combination of design, visualization, engineering and general contracting to homeowners. So they can know what
they can do, how much it will cost and using 3D Renderings, what it will look like. In about 4 days”. A “one stop shop” so to speak. Since openness and connectivity is the prevailing home design movement “can we move or eliminate that wall? Is the question we hear most frequently” says co-owner Peter Schnieper, “and the answer is always yes. We’re real general contractors and we have the electrical, structural, and carpentry resources to move any wall” The company uses a staff of certified designers to render the reinvented home with state of the art, mini super computers. “It’s so wonderful to see the homeowner’s eyes light up when they see the re-designed space” says John Hogan, “it’s like they get validation of what they’ve been imagining for the past 10 years”. They never proceeded with the project because no company could show them that it could be done. Hogan continues “homeowners get so excited about how beautiful it’s going to look and they’re even more excited about how easy it was.” To deliver this enormous amount of inspiration and design support to hundreds of homeowners per year, Remodeling Expo Center built an impressive Design Center where customers can interact with the company’s profession-
als, see kitchen and bathroom vignettes, and select form the awesome variety of granite, quartz, cabinetry, tile, plumbing fixtures, etc. The company’s Design Center is in downtown Roswell at 48 King Street. Business is expanding so rapidly that they are ing a second location in Alpharetta soon. Currently, their service area includes all of North Atlanta including Sandy Springs, Roswell, Marietta, Johns Creek, Norcross, Alpharetta, Brookhaven, Buckhead, Cumming, Woodstock, Dunwoody, Smyrna, Milton and other adjacent areas. Remodeling kitchens, bathrooms, basements or the whole house can be significant sums of money, so we are accustomed to answering a myriad of homeowner questions; how much should I spend?, what design should we do?,
should we remodel all 4 bathrooms? As the largest remodeler in North Atlanta, they’ve become the authority on homeowner guidance. We help homeowners understand that their homes are an investment, not an expense, and with the proper maintenance and periodic re-investment (remodeling), significant appreciation is virtually guaranteed. “It sold in 24 hours for over asking price”, this isn’t neighborhood folklore it happens every day to Remodeling Expo’s customers. As Remodeling Expo has come to dominate the remodeling market, they’ve also had the chance to record their fine work in a large library of before and after videos and photos for all to see at RemodelingExpo.com or call 404-9103969, 48 King Street Roswell GA 30075.

Beautifully livable interiors Creating an environment that infuses the wants, needs, vision and unique personality of my clients is how I approach each design. All of my designs are completely different from the other…because my clients are. A house is a homeowner’s sanctuary, their retreat and personal space in this big world we live in. I want my clients home not only to be beautiful but highly functional and to age gracefully….a place to create the best memories! My client-focused approach, personalized service and ability to weave modern elegance into traditional spaces allows for functional daily living for today’s busy families. Capturing the personality of the space and client then merging both makes each of Kat Nelson Design’s projects unique. Kat Nelson Designs has over 12 years of experience as a full service design firm based in Atlanta, Georgia our projects exist from West to East coast with many repeat clients. Here’s what some of her customers have said: “Kat has worked with me in two different homes, and I highly recommend her. She has a gift for creating liveable, cozy, and sophisticated spaces. She has helped to create homes that I am proud and happy to live in daily. I receive compliments frequently about my lighting and design features. Kat gets all the credit! Can’t wait to work on my next project with her.” “What an eye for color!! I met Kat for some ‘living room drapes’. It snowballed into my whole house. By our first meeting, she had learned my style then presented options that totally fit my vision for my house. She has a knack for mixing patterns, colors and textures that feels layered and collected rather than matchy or trendy. I would highly recommend Kat and her team!” “Katrina worked with us in decorating our newly built house as well as provided great tips in the final design. She was creative and extremely knowledgeable with bringing together our personal style, comfort, and a “wow” factor! We loved what she did and loved working with her personally!”

The Original Pancake House Alpharetta Here at The Original Pancake House Alpharetta we do things differently than other breakfast restaurants. There are a lot of quality features that you can only get at our location in the ever growing breakfast market. For many years full service breakfast restaurants have been under served in the restaurant market arena. That is slowly becoming not the case as many new full service breakfast chains and franchises emerge on the scene. The Original Pancake House is a franchise and one of the oldest. OPH started franchising in 1954. We are unique in that we have not changed a thing since then. The menu and the recipes are the same. The quality and ingredients we use are uncompromised. Just a few examples: We squeeze orange juice every morning. It takes 5 to 8 oranges to make a single glass of juice. We buy all of our eggs from a local egg farmer. He delivers hundreds of dozens of eggs to us several times a week and we hand crack them all. Other breakfast restaurants buy eggs that are bagged and cracked by a machine in advance. We clarify butter to season all of our pancake griddles and to cook all of the eggs in. Our pancake batter is made from scratch with our own sour starter. The list goes on. We are very proud to be voted The Best of North Atlanta and we want to thank our loyal clientele who obviously appreciates our uncompromising commitment to serving the same menu year after year after year without changing a thing.

Give your pups that head turning strut Puff n Fluff Pet Spa wants to thank all our wonderful clients for voting us with the Best of North Atlanta Pet Grooming Winner! Since its inception 3 years ago, Puff n Fluff Pet Spa has provided the ultimate pet spa experience for our clients and their pets. Our professional groomers are selected based on their experience, technical skills, and artistic abilities. Plus, in an unregulated grooming industry, we decided at the onset to step it up a notch and require all staff to become certified by the International Professional Groomers (IPG). Additionally, we’ve taken this to the next level by becoming the first salon in Georgia to be Safety Approved by the IPG. Puff n Fluff Pet Spa is super excited to be recognized as the top Pet Spa in North Atlanta and again say thanks to all our clients for their wonderful support. Also, we want to recognize and thank our dedicated and talented employees for all their hard work. We look forward to continuing to serve our community.
