Vietnam veterans memorial wall dedicated in Johns Creek By SYDNEY DANGREMOND sydney@appenmedia.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Hundreds gathered at Newtown Park Nov. 13 for the grand opening of The Wall That Heals, a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. Saturday morning’s ceremonies, hosted by the Johns Creek Veterans Association and the City of Johns Creek, served to honor Vietnam War veterans and those who lost their lives in the war. After leading attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance, retired U.S. Army Sgt. Roger Wise spoke about the power of the memorial. “It’s a wall that heals or starts the healing process,” Wise said. “Every time I’m in Washington [D.C.], I go to the wall, and there’s always somebody kneeling down, talking to it, laughing, crying, healing.” Wise continued, sharing a story about his most recent visit to the wall in Johns Creek and how a young man whose father was killed in Vietnam before he was born finally felt as though he had met his father after seeing the memorial. “That’s the power of this wall,” Wise said. “That’s the power of this memorial walk.” Mayor Mike Bodker was the first to deliver official remarks, thanking veterans, the Veterans Association, the Recreation and Parks Department and all who contributed to bringing the wall to Johns Creek. “This is a project of honor, tribute and love which so many have worked on to bring to fruition,” Bodker said. “Today is the day that we celebrate and honor service and hear from the residents and veterans who helped consecrate these grounds and memorial.” Bodker then awarded President of the JCVA, Lt. Col. Mike Mizell with a proclamation from the Fulton County Commission, honoring the dedication of the

Mizell shared a brief history of the memorial, recounting its three-day visit in Johns Creek in 2017, before being permanently installed last year. Mizell then recited the poem, “A Soldier’s Honor,” which details the sacrifice made by those who serve. Mizell also spoke of the debt owed to those who risk their lives in the military. “We can never be grateful enough for the sacrifices that they’ve made, and we are humbled by their willingness to put their lives aside for the benefit of ours,” Mizell said. Finally, Mizell spoke directly to the veterans. “To my brothers and sisters, the Vietnam veterans, Vietnam-era veterans, to all veterans: welcome home. And welcome to

your memorial park,” Mizell said. Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame inductee Capt. Tommy Clack, who was wounded May 29, 1969, along the Cambodian border, also delivered remarks. “I am blessed that but by the grace of God I know I would be listed on panel 23 west, line 13,” Clack said. He went on to speak about how Vietnam War veterans were treated after the war and how he and his fellow veterans had worked to ensure that mistreatment does not happen again. “You and I have ensured by what’s on that wall, that all generations after us are never treated that way,” Clack said. “When we look at that wall let it also remind us that if this country got enough money

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Softball is officially back in Johns Creek parks. Skill-building clinics are being held for girls interested in entering or growing in the sport, and four field sites between Newtown and Ocee parks have been identified. This comes just weeks after 34 softball-supporting community members spoke out at a public hearing pleading for the reinstatement of a Johns Creek softball recreation league. Leading the charge to revive the sport in the city is Mike Eves, community leader, longtime coach and softball dad. Eves served as coach for the Chattahoochee High School feeder team for several years, often coordinating and consulting with other teams in the area. He began to understand the universal issues plaguing all area programs: the pipeline was drying up. Because there was no community recreation league, younger girls were not participating in the sport. Each year, this put greater strain on the high school teams which were hurt by a decrease in players and a shallow pool of talent, Eves said.

Swatting call threatens Alpharetta police station JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police responded to a Johns Creek residence on Nov. 6 after a caller threatened to kill people at the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety headquarters. Alpharetta officers set up a security perimeter around the police station along Old Milton Highway, according to the incident report. Police said a man called 911 and told dispatchers he’s just shot his wife dead. He claimed he was driving to the Alpharetta Police Department from his Johns Creek home to “kill people.” The address the man gave dispatchers was redacted from the Alpharetta incident report. Police determined it was just five minutes away from department headquarters and began clearing the front lobby of the station and preparing for a possible attack. No hostile shooter showed up. Johns Creek Police went to the residence and talked to family members of the alleged caller. They said someone in the home had noticed several online accounts hacked, and someone used that resident’s cell phone to call 911 and make the threats. Police determined that the active threat was not real.

PUBLIC SAFETY Nov. 4. Responding officers found the pharmacy window open and all the lights on inside the store. Police knew it was not normal for the CVS to be lit up after hours and set up a perimeter around the business until managers arrived to let them do a safety check. Officers searched the CVS and found no one inside. Store managers said nothing appeared to be missing. The alarm company told dispatchers the store’s alarm went off at 3:03 a.m., and movement was detected inside the pharmacy area 69 seconds later. The company said someone could be seen exiting the pharmacy window moments later. The alarm company couldn’t provide a description of the suspect. Officers weren’t dispatched to the store until 3:14 a.m. and the first officer didn’t arrive until 3:17 a.m., nearly 15 minutes after the burglary alarm. Police said that was ample time for the suspect to get away.

NEWS Alpharetta begins breaking ground for improvements at horse park site

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Less than a week after voters passed a multi-million-dollar parks bond, about two dozen people gathered at Alpharetta’s Wills Park to mark the launch of major upgrades to the Equestrian Center. It was the start of some $11 million in improvements planned for Alpharetta’s centerpiece park, a 120-acre natural oasis in one of North Fulton County’s busiest cities. The horse park, itself, is scheduled to receive $5 million of bond money for upgrades that include a new competition ring, drainage and footing in all competition rings and the covered arena, new barns, shaded spectator seating and an office/spectator building. The non-profit Wills Park Equestrian Foundation has committed $5 million of its own money to match the city’s commitment to the upgrades. “This is a 50-year-old park, we have a lot of revitalizing to do,” said Foundation President Cheryl Sims. “It has launched many national champions, and it has been the cornerstone of many, many young riders, some of which you’ve seen here today.” Sims said work on the arena will begin in January, and the project is set for completion the first of March. Just last month, the City Council voted unanimously to commit $1.3 million for site work that includes clearing, grading and drainage improvements at the horse park. With the overwhelming passage of the parks bond, Wills Park and the Equestrian Center will become the major focus of revitalization that will include construction of Wacky World Playground, additional parking, improvements to the disc golf course, a complete rebuild of Waggy World Dog Park and construction of a family gathering spot near the pool facility. Three members of the City Council, including Mayor Jim Gilvin, voted against placing the bond on the November ballot, arguing that it would commit the city to spending money it may need for road improvements if the countywide transportation sales tax, also on the Nov. 2 ballot, failed at the polls. But that fear faded on election night when the sales tax passed by a 3-1 margin. The tax is expected to generate some $60 million in added revenue for transportation projects in the city.

Continued from Page 1 to fight a war, it had better find enough money to take care of the warrior and his friends and family.” Col. Rick White, who was deployed to Vietnam in 1967 at age 19, shared the personal numbers behind the statistics about the war. “During those Vietnam-era years, there were over nine million men and women serving in uniform worldwide,” White began. “On this wall there are a total of 58,317 names including eight women… They represent over 58,000 families and fellow warriors that grieve for them… the youngest here was 15… the oldest was 63.” On the memorial wall White said there are 40 sets of brothers and three sets of fathers and sons. There are 1,564 names of those lost from Georgia. “My friends and buddies that are here [on the wall] are numerous, and they include my medic who died in my arms,” White said. “There are many other young soldiers that were in my care and my responsibility that are on this wall. One of my best friends from Officer Candidate School and another, my OCS roommate are on this wall.” White said that more than 10% of his training school class’ names are on the wall because they deployed during the high casualties of the Tet Offensive. White then listed the names of 13 friends he lost in the war. “These 13 names are but a tiny fraction of the huge number on this wall, but by saying their names out loud, this is my way of honoring them and serves as a representation for all those names that today will go unspoken,” White said. White shared the story of one of his lost friends and spoke of the sacrifice from each service man and woman. He then conveyed his thoughts about the power of the memorial wall. “This wall, this holy wall is truly the wall that heals,” White said. “It, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington… provide for me and I hope for all Vietnam vets and the loved ones of those that have fallen, an almost inspirational, soothing salve as we reverently approach

its shining black surface and touch the names of those that have served and that we have loved.” White continued. “Each time I see this wall, I feel the presence of the men under my charge that I had lost in Vietnam, and I feel an almost quiet sense of calm and release,” White said. “It says my fallen brothers are telling me that they are at peace and rest, and they know that their platoon leader and their company commander, their friend, their brother, their fellow warrior did his best to protect him. And someday, we will all rendezvous on that final heavenly objective.” The ceremony’s special guest speaker was Jim Knotts, CEO of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. Knotts is an Air Force veteran of the Persian Gulf War. Knotts’ recounted the stories of several men and women listed on the memorial wall, introducing them to the guests. “These are all people who now, are a permanent part of your community,” Knotts said. To conclude the dedication ceremony, veterans built the soldier’s cross, and a Marine Corp Honor Guard performed a 21-gun salute. The Honor Guard’s bugler also performed “Taps.” Finally, Mizell and Bodker shared the ceremonial scissors and officially cut the ribbon on the memorial. The Wall That Heals can be visited every day between 6 a.m. and midnight.

I care deeply about all the health and wellbeing of Awesome Alpharetta’s community and its businesses. JANET RODGERS, president and CEO of the Alpharetta Convention & Visitors Bureau 8 | Johns Creek Herald | November 18, 2021

Alpharetta tourism director earns business award ALPHARETTA, GA — The Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce has announced the winners of the 2021 North Fulton Women Influencing Business Awards. The Business Woman of Excellence Living Legacy Award was presented to Janet Rodgers, president and CEO of the Alpharetta Convention & Visitors Bureau. The Women Influencing Business Awards were presented at the Chamber’s WellStar Monthly Luncheon Series on Oct. 26, 2021, at the Westin Atlanta Perimeter North. Women Influencing Business is a committee of the chamber that focuses on advancing and connecting women in the North Fulton business community. Awards were selected by a committee of past winners. WIB programming and networking events are presented by Verizon. Rodgers has spent more than two decades making Alpharetta a viable place that people would want to live, work, play and stay. Her mission at the Alpharetta Convention & Visitors Bureau is to position the city as a regionally, nationally and globally recognized premier tourism destination. Her work includes developing quality programs and facilities to attract overnight visitors to Alpharetta’s 30 modern and upscale hotels. Under her leadership, the Alpharetta Convention & Visitors Bureau recently received a gold level “Benchmark of Excellence” certification from the Georgia Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus for the fifth time. Rodgers was a co-founder of “Hospitality Highway” in 2005 and was the inspirational force behind creating a program that promoted the Ga. 400 corridor in the tourism and hospitality industry. Highlighting the seven communities that flank the highway on the north side of Atlanta, the program directly provided those cities with an influx of growth in their respective markets. Through the creation of a website, print collateral, public relations efforts, and social media, each of the communities from Buckhead to Dahlonega, have benefitted from her passion for tourism and partnership. The organizations Rodgers has supported with time, money and talent include Alpharetta Rotary, Innovation Academy, North Fulton Community

Rodgers said it was an honor to receive the award. “I care deeply about all the health and wellbeing of Awesome Alpharetta’s community and its businesses,” she said. “I lead a team of professionals who are committed to the development of the most creative tour-

Oven Ready Dinners!

Dear Reader, I am pleased to present Appen Media Group’s newest addition to your local newspaper, a free coupon page for local restaurants that we hope to update and publish every week. This is a continued effort by our company to support local restaurants through a still very trying economic period. This program costs participating restaurants nothing, other than the discount they are offering their customers in the coupon. It is a small way for us at Appen Media Group to give back to the business community that has given us so much. Our hope is that this will continue to protect the high quality of life we have come to enjoy in the north Metro area. For me, the pandemic highlighted the best in you – our readers – as you rushed to the aid of local businesses looking for new and creative ways to keep their lights on. You made donations, ordered take out, bought gift cards, took food to healthcare workers – whatever you could do to help out. Local businesses still desperately need your continued support and patronage. So, please take advantage of these great offers! While you are at it, please take a look through our newspaper and support our advertisers. They are the reason we are able to offer this program – for free – to local restaurants.

But get ready to hear about the great things coming your way courtesy of this next chapter for Cadillac Jack. Atlanta clearly isn’t used to having championship parades, that bus was flying down the downtown roads. We cover some obligatory music news with a quick heads up about our CMA’s coverage and a dive into the songwriting brain of Keith Urban. And finally, we close with some thoughts on the tragic situation at last week’s Travis Scott concert. The Georgia Politics Podcast Democrats get beat in Virginia, hang on in New Jersey On the podcast today, Hans guest hosts alongside Craig and Megan to discuss a busy two weeks in politics. The Atlanta mayoral race has turned to a runoff…and Kasim Reed is not in it. After a surprising third place finish, the former mayor is on the outside looking in as Felicia Moore and Andre Dickens place one and two in last November’s general election. Elsewhere in Georgia, we saw wider than expected margins in notable mayoral and city council races, particularly in the suburbs. Craig reasons that this is a reflection of Republican strength and poor candidate recruitment from democrats. Finally, the show turns to the election night results in Virginia and New Jersey, where Democrats lost huge ground compared to the 2020 Presidential results. In Virginia, Republican Glenn Youngkin upset Democrat and former Governor Terry McAuliffe in the Governors race and are favored to take back the house of delegates when absentee and mail in votes are finalized. In New Jersey, a typically Democratic stronghold, incumbent Governor Phil Murphy held off a challenge from Republican Jack Ciattarelli in a state that saw Joe Biden win by 16 points. What does this mean for the 2022 midterms across the country, but specifically here in Georgia, where Sen. Raphael Warnock is running for a full term? Cadillac Jack: My Second Act and The Georgia Politics Podcast are part of the Appen Podcast Network. Listen on appenmedia.com or wherever you get your podcasts.

Equestrian: Continued from Page 3 Gilvin said he was reassured by the sentiments of a local community that proved its commitment to bettering its quality of life. “It’s really special when a community can pull together and work with the local government,” he said at the groundbreaking. “We had a partner in the Equestrian Foundation, Cheryl and all the donors who made this day possible.” The fight to get the parks bond on

the November ballot – it passed the City Council on a narrow 4-3 vote – has not left elected leaders unscarred, however. Council members who led the campaign to get the referendum on the fall ballot said they were proud to be part of a group that recognizes the will of Alpharetta residents and acts on it. Ben Burnett, Jason Binder, Karen Richard and Donald Mitchell all celebrated their efforts pushing for the bond. “Voting in favor of projects and funding projects are not mutually exclusive,” Burnett said. “Anybody can show up for a ribbon cutting, but it actually takes people to back-bench the work to get to days like today.”

Softball: Continued from Page 1 During the public hearing Sept. 13, parents, coaches and players asked the city to develop a K-5 recreation league to help cultivate interest at the elementary level and insure a future for the high school softball programs. “It’s an equal access, equal opportunity situation,” Eves said. “We’re putting a lot of effort, a lot of money, a lot of investment into boys baseball, and we need to have that equal access for these girls to play because it is really a Title IX issue at the end of the day.” Title IX is an Education Amendment adopted in 1972 stipulating that people cannot be discriminated against based on gender in educational programs or activities which receive federal financial assistance. Schools, local and state educational agencies all fall under the purview of Title IX. Programming was not the only issue impeding softball in Johns Creek. Supporters also lacked dedicated space. Jacobs Field was built for softball at Ocee Park, but after the city ended Solution the recreational programs, it was D E T E U T I L E A G L H E S E T P A R A A V O N D E P T E S E A L O U M O R T I N D O T E E E R R

transitioned to support tee-ball. Now, Jacobs Field will again be used for softball, Eves said. Another field at Ocee and two fields at Newtown Park have also been identified for softball. Minor adjustments to the field including changes to the infield and the construction of a removeable fence shortening the outfield are all it would take to begin leveling the metaphorical playing fields, Eves said. Since the large showing at the Sept. 13 public hearing, Eves has worked alongside Recreation and Parks Advisory Committee Chair Chris Jackson, City Council members Lenny Zaprowski and John Bradberry, among others. Eves has also submitted a proposal to the city manager’s office and is working to finalize plans for field adjustments and a K-5 league. Eves’ proposal also provides guidance for how the city could host future softball tournaments. The goal is a true Field of Dreams scenario, “If you build it [they] will come.” Interest will be cultivated by the parents, and Eves hopes, by the city. They need only to build the infrastructure of the program, supply the fields and the players will find it. Jackson said he’s heartened to see so much support in the community. “I’ve spent time with every City

We’re putting a lot of effort, a lot of money, a lot of investment into boys baseball, and we need to have that equal access for these girls to play because it is really a Title IX issue at the end of the day.” MIKE EVES Community leader, longtime coach and softball dad Council member, including the ones who have just won … and they’re all on board,” Jackson said. “Everybody’s moving ahead.” Phase one of Cauley Creek construction is set to begin in December, but Jackson said there is potential for softball fields to become a part of the phase two plans, though that would

likely depend on findings during development of the new Recreation and Parks Master Plan. After the Sept. 13 public hearing, Zaprowski tacked on an amendment to the fiscal year 2022 budget allocating an additional $120,000 to the parks budget, specifically for increasing programming, but Jackson said those funds have not yet been tapped. The goal of the funds will be to hire an additional staff member to help facilitate increased programming in Johns Creek parks, like softball. In this interim period before a five-seat turnover in the City Council, Jackson said the city manager’s office has been “on the ball” in talks with the softball community. Eves has been working with Ocee Park President JR Canales to put on the skill-building clinics on Sundays. They’ve already hosted five but are still working to raise awareness. “The big thing is we’ve got to get the word out, so the girls realize that it’s an option now, right in Johns Creek for programming because they haven’t had that option in a long time,” Eves said. For more information on Johns Creek recreational softball, Eves directs interested players and parents to fill out a google form: forms.gle/eSdLCNhuBWvDnG446.
