LETTERS FROM HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATION

Northside Hospital helps Forsyth County stay healthy N

o one ever wants to be in the hospital, and sometimes we don’t have a choice. However, we do have a choice of where we go, and for more than 735,000 patients each year that choice is Northside Hospital Forsyth. In the face of everything that’s happened since March 2020, we have a lot to be thankful for as we work our way through a truly unprecedented experience. For example, the outpouring of support from individuals, businesses and organizers in our community throughout the COVID-19 crisis has been nothing short of astonishing. We cannot possibly thank you enough. I hear from patients every day about why they choose Northside – for our reputation of providing clinical excellence, the culture of kindness and compassion they experienced during their visit, for the expertise of our medical staff, and the comprehensive services that we offer. Each member of our team takes this very seriously. And others do, too:

• In 2020, the Centers for Medicare & Medic-

aid Services (CMS) recognized Northside Hospital Forsyth with five stars in its annual Hospital Quality Star Ratings. We were one of just three in Georgia to receive the recognition. • We also earned an “A” in The Leapfrog Group’s bi-annual Hospital Safety Grades for a third consecutive survey. • Northside Hospital Forsyth has been recognized by Healthgrades for providing an Outstanding Patient Experience, is one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals™ for joint replacement, and has received quality achievement awards for heart failure and stroke care from the American Heart Association. Our commitment to wellness also extends to this area’s stellar servant leaders. Although many of our jointly-sponsored events have looked different this year, Northside continues to have strong community partnerships with many non-profit organizations, including The Place of Forsyth, the Elachee Nature Science Center, Literacy Forsyth, United Way of Forsyth County, the Forsyth County Schools, North Fulton Community Charities, 2020 Georgia Movies in the Park, the March of Dimes and many others. Our patients will always come first in everything we do. We often talk about our growth – of our facilities and our services. Simply put, our growth

provides greater patient access to quality medical care and improves patient outcomes. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for putting your trust in Northside Hospital Forsyth all these years. Wishing good health and happiness to you and yours, Skip Putnam CEO, Northside Hospital Forsyth

The Emory Difference E

mory Johns Creek Hospital (EJCH) is committed to helping you and your family experience a lifetime of good health. We’re a 110-bed acute care facility located in the heart of Johns Creek. EJCH is proud to provide world-class care with hometown heart. We offer academic and research-based medicine, as well as community events, classes, and support groups, close to home. We’re part of Emory Healthcare, the most comprehensive academic health system in the state. Patients have immediate local access to more than 2,000 physicians in over 50 specialties. That’s the Emory difference. Physicians at EJCH deliver a range of medical services, from routine care to complex procedures and treatments, many of which are not available anywhere else in the area. Some of our renowned services include Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University; an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center; a birth center staffed 24 hours a day with physician laborists, and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, advanced cardiac and stroke care, vascular care, 24-hour emergency medicine, 24-hour coverage with intensive care trained physicians, bariatrics/weight loss, orthopaedics, and general surgery. EJCH is diligently working to expand services to accommodate the needs of our community. Construction is underway at our facility for a $61 million vertical expansion project. The hospital will add two new floors to the existing hospital, including 40 beds. The new space will help balance patient demand, improve staff efficiency, and streamline care. Our hospital supports award-winning centers and programs that advance the science of medicine while providing outstanding patient care. In March 2020, EJCH received the prestigious Magnet® recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program®. The recognition is the most esteemed honor given to a health care organization for nursing excellence and patient outcomes. About eight percent of U.S. health care organizations earn Magnet recognition. Georgia has only ten Magnet-recognized hospitals, including now four Emory Healthcare facilities: Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Emory University Hospital, Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital, and Emory University Orthopaedics & Spine Hospital. Magnet recognition is the gold standard for nursing excellence and is a factor when the public judges health care organizations. Patients also have access to two Cardiac Catheterization Labs and two Interventional Radiology (IR) labs at EJCH. These technologies provide enhanced image quality

for doctors and better manages radiation exposure to patients and staff. The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory provides a variety of cardiac procedures including angioplasty and stent placement, delivering on average less than 90 minutes for severe heart attacks. Our IR lab provides non-invasive procedures to treat patients with debilitating chronic pain and functional issues. EJCH is proud to be recognized as an accredited Chest Pain Center with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) capabilities. The Joint Commission has also designated our hospital as a Primary Stroke Center. American Heart Association awarded us the Mission: Lifeline Gold Receiving STEMI Achievement Award for excellent heart attack care as well as, the Get With The Guidelines Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award. Additionally, EJCH hosts health fairs, classes, and events that are important to our community. Whether you are a new mom looking for newborn baby tips or a cancer patient or survivor, we may have a class for you. Our physicians, nurses, and staff consider it an honor and a privilege to care for you, our neighbors, friends, and family members. Thank you for entrusting your care to us. We look forward to continuing to serve patients in Johns Creek for years to come. Sincerely, Marilyn Margolis, MN, RN, NEA-BC Emory Johns Creek Hospital, CEO

Seniors An empty-nester’s guide to packing for vacation By LORI WYNNE Contributing Writer One great benefit of having an empty nest is your ability to fly away without having to juggle the children’s school or activity schedules. Taking a vacation becomes much less stress-filled. Packing for that vacation should be too. A stress-free vacation starts with a concise travel wardrobe. This consists of clothing items that can be used in a variety of outfit combinations, comfortable-but-stylish shoes and space-saving packing tools. Your travel wardrobe may not look like your everyday wardrobe. Leave your high-heels, delicate fabrics, sports team caps and shirts at home. Traveling is about adventure (hence, the need for comfortable shoes) and blending in with the culture by not looking like a target for nefarious activities. Here are my tips for creating a stress-free travel wardrobe that can fit in a carry-on bag.

CHOOSE FIVE BOTTOMS Comfort and stretch are key. Travel can cause bloating, so leave your tight pants at home. Consider a pull-on slim-leg pant in a stretchable medium-weight knit, a solid colored full-length skirt in easy-care fabric, a pair of jeans (if you must), dark leggings and a neutral knee-length skirt that can be worn casually or dressed up. Add and subtract as your personal needs merit. LIMIT SHOES TO THREE PAIRS Bring streamlined euro-sneakers, lowheeled dress shoes and low-heeled booties. Choose neutral colors to go with a variety of outfits, but make sure they aren’t dull. Consider muted metallic finishes, snake print or highquality leather that is easy to clean. Comfort is important. Invest in your footwear, and your feet will thank you. If sandals are a must on your next adventure, choose a closed-toe sandal to protect your toes from stubbing or general filth. Choose your outfit for the day by what shoes you will wear. Switch pairs each day to give your feet and your shoes a break. BE PREPARED Pack a light, waterproof jacket for inclement weather, and a patterned scarf to add a bit of flair to your travel wardrobe. I usually buy a scarf from a local vendor as a memento of the trip.

SELECT EASY-CARE FABRICS Leave linen at home. Pack items made from Tencel or Lyocell instead. They look like linen, without the wrinkles. Thin jersey skirts and polyester dresses can be rolled up in a bag without much wrinkling. Just shake them out when you arrive. Use a travel-size wrinklerelease spray to relax any stubborn wrinkles. Polyester blend, cotton or spandex pieces can be rinsed out in the sink, line-dried overnight and worn the next day.

PACKING TOOLS Organize your travel wardrobe into handy fabric travel cubes to keep your suitcase tidy and your clothing from getting wrinkled. It also makes it easier to create an outfit for the day’s adventure, because you know where everything is located. Using a set of travel cubes gives you more room in your suitcase, especially if you choose the type with an additional compression zipper. A compression zipper allows the user to make the clothing-filled cube even smaller and tighter by squeezing air and unused space out of the cube. Using a set of three in a variety of sizes is optimal. Use the smallest size to organize your socks, undergarments and sleepwear. Roll your pants, skirts and shorts to minimize the wrinkles and save space in the medium-sized packing cube. The largest packing cube, usually a quarter of the size of a traditional carry-on bag, contains blouses, sweaters or light jackets. Another packing tool to acquire is a packing envelope. It packs well in the top half of a carry-on size suitcase. Use a tool like this to pack dress shirts, dresses or anything that you don’t feel like rolling. It has a thin rigid plastic rectangular bottom that can be used as a folding guide. The travel envelope can hold up to 12 items of clothing while minimizing wrinkles.

PACK 10 TOPS Layering is key to getting the most use out of your travel tops. Include a couple of tops in the same color as your bottoms to create a slim monochromatic look. Layer with patterned tops to pull outfits together. Pattern type is up to you, but keep it small. Pack slim cardigans for warmth and variety.

FINAL TIP Leave your bulky purse and bulging billfold at home. Streamline your travel by using a sleek cross-body bag with a sturdy strap. Minimize your bulging wallet by leaving your “frequent buyer” cards at home and converting to a smaller space-saving wallet.

CHOOSE A COLOR THEME Start with a neutral color, such as navy, black or cream. Add secondary colors like blush, light blue, camel or raspberry. Use patterned pieces to pull outfits together and add splashes of color.

New hobbies enhance lifestyle for those 55 and up By CHARMAINE JACKSON Contributing Writer

S

pring is a wonderful time to try new hobbies that can enhance the health and happiness for those who are fabulously 55 years and older. Hobbies give you a time out from your busy schedule to relax and enjoy your life, express your creativity, learn new skills and connect with people, with nature and with yourself. The key is to pick a hobby that is just for you. GARDENING Do you love watching things grow, eating fresh vegetables or the beauty of flowers? If so, you might try your hand at gardening. You can start a garden at your home, join a local community garden or club, take gardening classes or even become a master gardener. An excellent gardening resource can be found right at your fingertips, with the North Fulton Master Gardeners website — http://www.nfmg.net/. The website offers information on local garden events, classes, field trips and speakers, as well as how to become a master gardener and more. HIKING Did you know that Georgia has more than 60 state parks and historic sites from which to enjoy a leisurely hike on the trails? Hiking is fun and good for your physical, mental and relationship health. A 2015 Stanford University study found that hiking outdoors reduces stress, calms anxiety and boosts your mood. If you think hiking might be your new hobby, the Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites website (https://gastateparks.org/) offers plenty of helpful tips, and the rangers and staff you will encounter when you arrive at the park can also provide hiking advice. From Mary Kay to four-time cancer survivor, hopeful message detailed in booklet By Kathy Des Jardins Cioffi Contributing Writer

S

herry B. Williams has a big message in a small package. The four-time breast cancer survivor wrote and self-published “When Cancer Calls,” a 38-page booklet she calls light-hearted, faith-based and easy to read for anyone diagnosed with cancer. During October, Williams will be speaking at breast cancer awareness events throughout metro Atlanta, signing books and discussing her cancer journey. It’s a story that began in 1999 with the Atlanta native’s initial diagnosis. A full-time senior sales director with Mary Kay Cosmetics in Chicago, Williams had just turned 40, was driving a signature Mary Kay pink Cadillac and, with no family history of the disease, was stunned when her doctor found a lump undetected by her annual mammogram. She would receive that dire diagnosis three more times by 2004. In addition to 20-plus traditional surgeries, including lumpectomies and a bilateral mastectomy followed by reconstructive surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Williams also included alternative options in her recovery. After relocating to Phoenix, she sought treatment at the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona Medical Center. As she explained, the facility focuses on combining conventional and alternative medicine along with nutrition, exercise and spirituality. Today, Williams says she is cancer free. “Most cancer survivors say, ‘I am in remission,’” she said. “In the words of the well-known motivational speaker Les Brown, a cancer survivor, ‘Watch your words. Remission is a temporary state.’ Since I do not want to be temporarily done with cancer, I use the phrase ‘I have conquered it!’” Now living back in Atlanta, near siblings and her 80-year-old mother, a recent breast cancer survivor herself, Williams is a public policy consultant. She also maintains a “very part-time” Mary Kay business because she loves the company and its “incredible caring people.” “When I was diagnosed the second time in Chicago and both times in Phoenix, the women of Mary Kay showed up to help me like the U.S. Army,” said Williams, who is single. In addition to driving her to chemo and radiation treatments, her Mary Kay compatriots also helped in other critical ways. “They raised money for me to be able to afford Zofran, my anti-nausea medication, when my insurance company refused to pay for it,” she said. Williams remains similarly devoted to the slim book she wrote in 2005 to give hope to other cancer patients. “When people are diagnosed with breast cancer, or any

cancer, they don’t need ‘War and Peace,’” she said. “They are overwhelmed and unsure of their next steps. They need hope about how to cope from a survivor. Clinicians can’t say, ‘I know how you feel.’ When people are diagnosed, they need hope from a survivor who is willing to share in their journey to wellness.” Her website, www.whencancercalls.info, lists nine speaking engagements during October. And her message at each will stress one crucial point: early detection saves lives. “Despite many advancements in treatment and treatment technology,” she said, “too many women, and a few men, are still being diagnosed too late to have a fighting chance to fight and survive.” Williams, who discovered her last three cancers herself, hopes to become the national spokesperson for early detection. “Who better than a survivor, not a clinician (that many people who are most at-risk do not trust) to actually use their story to motivative people to do their monthly self-breast exams and get their annual mammograms,” she said. “I absolutely love writing and being a motivational speaker where I dialogue with and give hope to those touched by cancer.”

Local veterinarian brings mobile care, acupuncture to pets By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com

“The love that people have for their pets is pure, and supporting that bond is my privilege.” DR. DEBORAH MITCHELL

PHOTOS PROVIDE BY DR MITCHELL

Pets are as much a member of a person’s family as their children, and Dr. Deborah Mitchell is determined to provide the same level of care for people’s furry friends. Mitchell is the founder and owner of Tides Mobile Vet, a company that brings pet care to the home. “Most veterinarians are inspired by their love of animals and science, but for me, it had as much to do with the human-animal bond,” Mitchell said. “There is nothing comparable. The love that people have for their pets is pure, and supporting that bond is my privilege.” Mitchell’s mobile vet practice Dr. Deborah can manage all Mitchell non-emergency medical conditions, like skin and ear infections, gastrointestinal problems, allergies, arthritis, chronic diseases, pain management, vaccine programs, annual wellness exams and blood testing. “A mobile vet has many advantages for the client, their pet and for myself,” Mitchell said. “The personal one-on-one time of a veterinary house call allows for a more in-depth interaction. Many pets are stressed by going into a veterinary hospital, or they struggle with mobility issues that make it hard for them to get in and out of a car. Imagine the logistical nightmare of bringing your three cats in for their annual exam. All that falls away with a house call.” She added that house calls allow her to address issues related to daily living, such as nutrition, weight management and preventative care. Seeing how a pet moves around in its natural habitat can also provide Mitchell with insights she would not be able to gain otherwise, she said. Unlike most veterinarians, Mitchell can also offer specialized acupuncture for pets. She became certified in veterinary acupuncture just before she moved to Milton eight years ago, when she was inspired to create Tides Mobile Vet.

“Being able to integrate conventional and complementary medicine with veterinary acupuncture is what makes me unique,” Mitchell said. “Acupuncture is widely used to treat arthritis, disc disease, neurological conditions and internal medicine diseases. “I became certified in veterinary acupuncture and felt strongly that it was best served in the home environment,” Mitchell said. “I have many dogs and a few cats that will fall asleep during their acupuncture treatment, because they are so relaxed.” With veterinary acupuncture, the needles are typically left in for five to 30 minutes with no pain for the pets, said Mitchell. Sedation is not used, and she encourages pet owners to stay with their pets during the treatment. Mitchell previously worked as a small animal veterinarian in several hospitals throughout the Miami and Washington, D.C. areas. She is also USDA certified, which allows her to prepare health certificates for domestic and international travel with pets. She now lives in Milton with her three pets. Natural supplements are increasingly popular ways to take health into your own hands, says Dr. Michael Murray, N.D.

Six top wellness trends to watch for

A

ccording to the National Institutes of Health, only about 20 percent of your life expectancy is dictated by your genes; the rest depends on your lifestyle. Increasingly, people look to improve the length and quality of their life through certain products and habits. Here’s a look at six popular roads to wellness: Back to nature. Dr. Chloe Evans of the Shetland, Scotland National Health Service says getting out into nature can help alleviate conditions ranging from high blood pressure to depression. “The benefits [of nature] are that it is free, easily accessible, allows increased connection with surroundings which hopefully leads to improved physical and mental health for individuals,” she says. Personalize nutrition. When it comes to maintaining a healthful weight and well-being, foods that are good or bad for one person may not be for another. Personalized diets can help. Dress for health success. New technologies may let clothes correct your environment. Engineers from MIT created a “smart” jacket that automatically adjusts itself to suit your body temperature, the outside temperature and your movements. CBD is in. No longer illegal under the Controlled Substances Act, cannabidiol (CBD)—which doesn’t induce a psychoactive effect—is increasingly used to target specific ailments.

Aromatherapy makes scents. At the Cleveland Clinic’s Innovations Lab, researchers came up with plant-based aromatherapeutic solutions to treat specific symptoms, such as pain, nausea and anxiety. Recent studies of people with knee replacements suggest the right scent can reduce pain and relieve anxiety. Be smart about supplements. “High-quality supplements and vitamins, herbs and homeopathy, and sports nutrition products can be trusted partners in your natural wellness lifestyle,” explains Michael Murray, N.D. Dr. Murray is considered one of the world’s leading authorities on natural medicine. He has published more than 30 books including “The Textbook of Natural Medicine,” used by hundreds of thousands of healthcare professionals the world over. Wellness solutions for just about all the key aspects of your life are available through iHerb, a leading wellness destination serving 150 countries for over two decades. Based in the U.S., iHerb’s quality control includes product testing by a third-party lab for ingredients, purity and labeling; climate-controlled warehouses and distribution centers; and assurance of freshness and transparency with close expiration date monitoring. The company is committed to offering the best overall value, guaranteeing unparalleled quality and easy product comparison. For more information visit www.iherb.com.

Forsyth named healthiest county

O

ut of 159 counties in the state, Forsyth County again ranked No. 1 when it comes to health for the eighth consecutive year. The annual County Health Rankings & Roadmaps study conducted by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute has again placed Forsyth at the top. The rankings are based on two types of measures: how long people live and how healthy people feel while alive. Northside Hospital Forsyth Administrator Lynn Jackson said the healthy community recognition is built on decades of work from many community leaders. “Forsyth County has a hardwired platform of ever expanding community resources, physical and social environments and governmental support that maintains a healthy community,” Jackson said. “Unlike some of our many other community accolades, the recognition as the healthiest community embraces and supports all of us.” Jackson said health initiatives, whether parks and recreation facilities, health care providers, hospitals, clinics or sidewalks and civic clubs all help to reduce the health gaps

The rankings are based on two types of measures: how long people live and how healthy people feel while alive. that can come from differences in income, education, race, ethnicity or location. “Our collective work in this area brings the greatest benefit to the highest number of our community members,” Jackson said. Jackson said that while we pause to recognize this milestone in our community, she points out that there’s still a lot of work ahead. “Our interests must continue to be focused on the future as we create successful strategies to overcome our challenges in areas such as drug use and abuse, expanding mental health needs in the wake of contracting mental health services,” she said. “And road safety to reduce traffic accidents and injuries from driving while distracted or under the influence. We still have opportunities as we make sure that Forsyth County remains the greatest place to call home.”

Local crusader for cystic fibrosis spreads awareness

ABBY BYRD PHOTOGRAPHY

Local woman’s battle with cystic fibrosis helps her help others

26 | Medical Answer Book 2020

By KIMBERLY TYSON kimberly@appenmediagroup.com

C

umming resident Amye Phinazee can best be described as courageous, spiritually faithful, passionate and resilient. Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as a child, the 25-year-old has earned her stripes not only as a person living with CF, but as a crusader for CF research and a voice for more awareness about the complex, chronic disease. Cystic fibrosis is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits breathing function. It affects more than 30,000 children and adults in the United States, and about 70,000 worldwide, according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. While CF primarily affects the lungs and digestive system, it can also have an impact on the pancreas and other organs. Phinazee knows all too well about growing up with CF. Treatments can range from consuming multiple medications to lung treatments and frequent hospital stays. Because CF can be diagnosed as early as birth, treating the disease can be a burden on childhood. When she was very young, Phinazee recalls being medicated to help digest her food. As she grew older, the disease began to target her lungs and living with CF became more challenging. Her middle-school years brought the onset of daily lung therapy treatments and more medications to manage symptoms. Despite these difficulties, Phinazee remembers her childhood as being fun and normal, thanks to strong, dutiful parents, whom she describes as “a gift from God.” “My parents made sure to not let CF define my childhood,” she said. As an adult, the challenges of CF increased. Her lung issues progressed, and she developed CF-related diabetes and experienced more frequent visits to the hospital. It was at age 22, after two back-to-back trips to the hospital, that Phinazee decided to become an advocate for the disease that had become ingrained in her daily life. Today, Phinazee is involved with numerous charities that raise money for research and help spread awareness about the disease, including the CF Foundation Georgia chapter and Great Strides, CF Foundation’s annual walkathon charity event. She also uses social media and her blog to spread awareness. This year, she is the ambassador for a local annual event called Cars and ‘Q for the Cause. Hosted by Choate Construction, the event has raised more than $1.7 million and is celebrating its 11th season. Event founder and director Emily Bridges said selecting Phinazee as this year’s ambassador was a no-brainer. “Amye is an inspiring, motivating and resilient woman using her voice as a beacon to both cure CF and comfort her CF peers,” Bridges said. One does not typically think that having a chronic disease would be a blessing. But Phinazee said she does. “The Lord has shown me that so many good things and opportunities can come from having a disease,” she said. It’s that positive insight and appreciation for life that inspires others in Phinazee’s life, including her CF family. Vicky Nix, a friend and senior director of the CF Founda-

tion’s Georgia chapter, has known and worked alongside Phinazee since meeting her as a teenager. “I have loved watching her blossom into a young adult,” Nix said. “Her life and story inspire us all. She is a dynamic young adult who openly shares her journey with CF. She has a special gift in inspiring others to help not only her, but the entire CF community.” These days, Phinazee's overall health is stable and under control, thanks to drug trials and treatments that are the result of new research and more CF awareness. Living with the disease has taught Phinazee many valuable life lessons. The biggest perhaps is what makes her a true CF solider. “The biggest lesson that I have learned is that every day is a gift, and what you do with that gift matters,” she said.

Patient centered, state of the art women’s healthcare Available in Alpharetta at Avalon, Johns Creek and Cumming Brought to you by — Modern OBGYN of North Atlanta

W

ith no time to be sick, in pain or have surgery, the providers of Modern OBGYN know that educating women with different options for surgery is important. Dr. John Reyes, Dr. Ingrid Reyes, Dr. Natu Mmbaga, Dr. Annie Kim, Dr. Stacey Pereira, Dr. Christy Kenkel, and Dr. Nada Megally understand that one way of helping women in this busy world is through minimally invasive surgical options via robotic surgery and in-office surgical procedures. “There are so many great options for women,” Dr. John Reyes said. “It’s our job to get that information to them and make them aware they don’t need large incisions, long hospital stays, or painful recovery times.” Minimally invasive robotic surgery allows the physicians at Modern OBGYN to operate through just a few small incisions. Featuring a high-definition vision system and tiny wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human wrist, da Vinci enables them to operate with enhanced vision, precision and control. As the first surgeons to perform da Vinci robotic surgeries at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, husband and wife team Dr. Ingrid and Dr. John Reyes know some common issues that can be addressed with robotic surgery are hysterectomies, ovarian cysts, pelvic pain and heavy bleeding. Striving to do their best for the women in the community, Dr. John said, “It’s a blessing to be able to do minimally invasive and robotic surgeries on patients suffering from longstanding issues such as infertility from endometriosis, fibroids, or pelvic adhesive disease.” Established in 2010, Modern OBGYN has three convenient office locations in Johns Creek, Alpharetta at Avalon, and the newest office located on the Northside Forsyth campus in Cumming. Along with compassionate care for patients and their needed surgeries, Modern OBGYN strives to give expecting mothers the support they need by making sure that the mothers personally know their provider. Modern OBGYN has a highly experienced team of Certified Nurse Midwives who work alongside each physician to provide well-rounded, patient-centered and personal obstetrical care. You’ll always know us, and we’ll always know you,” Dr. John said. “No surprises when it comes time to deliver!” Dr. John says the best part about building provider-patient relationships is, “We can help them become pregnant, and come full-circle to care for them during their pregnancy and delivery. It’s the full spectrum of caring for what’s so important to a woman’s life—her health and her family.” Modern OBGYN also provides routine annual exams, Pap smears, HPV testing, irregular cycles, menopause and other common women’s issues. The physicians perform robotic surgery at both Emory Johns Creek Hospital and Northside Hospital-Forsyth. Winter skin care Brought to you by — Premier Dermatology and MOHS Surgery of Atlanta

A

s the weather in Atlanta plummets from summer straight into winter, we are Dr. Brent Taylor most often plagued with chapped lips and overly dry skin and often forget about our broader skin concerns. With months to go before spring’s warmth and summer sun, I encourage my patients to take a good look at their long term skin concerns and to act now as opposed to the warmer months, when we are more likely to be out in the sun and unable to get the full effects of the treatments below. So what should you be doing for your skin now instead of in the spring and summer months? • Treating your precancers, shallow cancers and sun damaged skin with photodynamic therapy – Photodynamic therapy (PDT), sometimes called blue light therapy, is one of the best things a person can do to effectively treat precancerous actinic keratosis (AK), mild shallow skin cancers such as superficial or nodular basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma in situ and even some types of acne and sun damage. Many of the cancers I treat on the face and scalp via Mohs surgery could have been prevented if the patient had undergone PDT while the cancer was still in its early stages. Most commonly, PDT is used to treat AKs or skin cancers on the face or scalp but is also frequently used on the arms, hands, neck or chest. What can a patient expect during a PDT procedure? After having a topical medicine called ALA soak into the skin for one to four hours, the PDT treatment takes only 15 minutes during which a patient lies underneath a blue light, that ultimately causes damaged tissue to be replaced with healthy tissue. • Treat your pigmentation problems! – Pigmentation concerns such as

BEST DERMATOLOGIST IN NORTH ATLANTA

An interview with Dr. Taylor Brought to you by — Alyssa McNamara Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta melasma and “age spots” are best treated in the winter months when the skin is not getting exposed to as much UV light. Melasma is a disorder marked by dark patches on the skin, often on the cheeks and upper lip. Topical medicines and chemical peels can help. During a melasma-specific peel, patients can expect to have a red, sensitive face that peels for one to several weeks depending on the strength of the peel and the sensitivity of the patient’s skin. During this time the patient cannot get any sun on the new skin. And afterwards sun protection is key to preventing melasma’s return. Unfortunately melasma is stubborn, and retreatment approximately once per year is often beneficial. Other pigmentation concerns such as freckles or “liver spots” are best treated via laser therapy. Again, as these treatments involve damaging the skin with heat and light energy, the best results will come from avoidance of the sun after treatment until the area heals. Use of pants and long sleeve shirts and pursuit of indoor activities help maximize treatment effect. • Treat your legs now: not in the spring when you want to show them off Patients often present with vascular complaints in early spring and request a quick and immediate fix. Common complaints such as varicose veins, spider veins and telangiectasias can be effectively treated but may require multiple treatment modalities and sessions. Also, insurance companies often require that patients try 3 months of “conservative therapy” consisting of exercise, leg elevation, medical grade compression stockings and over the counter pain medicine before insurance companies will cover vein treatments, so if you want legs to be ready for summer, it’s best to see a physician in late fall or early winter. At Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta, it is our pleasure to meet your skin care needs. Board certified and fellowship-trained, Dr. Brent Taylor is a skin cancer, vein and aesthetic expert honored to be of service.

Congratulations to Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta for its third year in a row of being voted Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist of North Fulton! I decided to sit down with Dr. Brent Taylor and physician assistant Kathryn Filipek at Premier Dermatology to get their take on their success and to learn a bit more about them. Alyssa: Hey you two! So nice to see you guys again! I’ve previously had the pleasure of speaking with you both separately regarding Premier Dermatology and your particular contributions to the practice, but I wanted to take time to sit down with you both to hear your thoughts on your continued success. Dr. Taylor, congratulations on another win for Best of North Fulton 2020! This marks your 3rd year being named both Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist in North Fulton since opening in 2017. That’s quite an accomplishment. To what do you attribute your continued success? Dr. Taylor: Thank you Alyssa! Well, as I’ve said in the past, I believe that my patients understand our sincerity and our dedication to our patients’ healthcare. Kathryn and I and our amazing team all honestly care about our patients and their well-being. I hope that that sincerity comes through during our interactions. We always strive to give our patients our complete attention and to learn more about an individual as a person as well as a patient. There are plenty of times when a patient brings something to our attention or compels us to do additional research, and Kathryn and I are constantly collaborating on our patients’ behalf. I believe that comes through. All of that, and my awesome dad jokes are a big hit. I’m a father of three boys ages seven, five and two, so I have plenty of time to practice my material. Kathryn: I agree with everything that Dr. Taylor said, especially how nice the patients are to laugh at his jokes. Our team really is wonderful. We have experienced and caring team members. And we have received a lot of compliments that the practice has a personal and “boutique” feel, even as we deliver care that is scientific and academic. Alyssa: Kathryn and Dr. Taylor, how is everything going in this odd Covid time? I believe Kathryn joined the practice in March? I bet that was an interesting time to expand?

An interview with Dr. Taylor CONTINUED FROM PAGE 29 Dr. Taylor: We are beyond grateful for the addition of Kathryn! She really is a fantastic provider and is knowledgeable and experienced in dermatology. Most importantly, our skillsets really complement one another. For example, my focus in the vein clinic portion of our practice has been on treating venous disease that results in leg swelling and pain, and Kathryn has years of experience performing aesthetically-focused cosmetic sclerotherapy. She brought PRP for hair rejuvenation to the practice as well as chemical peels and is an expert Botox® and filler injector. The addition of another provider also means that we are frequently able to accommodate patients for same day or next day appointments. Covid was inconvenient but the slowdown also allowed us to make sure Kathryn’s integration to the practice was seamless. Alyssa: Well I think that’s enough serious business for now. I thought we could ask a few casual questions to allow your readers get to know you both a little better. If you won the lottery tomorrow what would be the first thing you did after you cashed it? Brent: I would probably pay off the mortgages of my family and all my staff. And I would buy some new socks because mine are pretty sad right now. And some chocolate chip cookies. Kathryn: Flee the country and not tell my husband. No, seriously, after working so hard to put myself through college and my medical training, I would love to set up an educational fund for young adults from my hometown in Michigan so they

could receive higher education and not have to take half of their adult life to pay it off. If you could immediately become fluent in something, what would it be? Brent: Italian. Feeling like a local in a foreign country has to be fun, and I think Italy tops my list. Kathryn: Spanish. I was able to apply a lot of my “Splanglish” while living in South Florida, but Dr. Taylor puts me to shame when he is able to communicate fluently, and I only understand a portion of what he or my patients are saying. What were you like in high school? Brent: I was very smart. And very naive. I had very little time for much besides keeping my nose to the grindstone but was still happy and people still joke that in the back of my head I seem to have The Girl From Ipanema playing on repeat. Kathryn: I moved halfway through my freshman year, so it took me a bit to find my place. I was outgoing and took part in Cross Country, Basketball, Track, several academic and service clubs, played piano and worked as a server at a restaurant. I also enjoyed a lot of time on the beach of Lake Superior (cold, but true) Who is someone you look up to? Brent: My dad. Sounds cliché’ but it’s true. My dad is just such a wonderful man. He’s kind and patient and incredibly intelligent. He has worked extremely hard to accomplish everything he has in life and really instilled in me a strong work ethic and a compassionate heart. I am beyond fortunate for my family. Kathryn: My Grandmother. She grew up on a dairy farm on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and taught school in a one room schoolhouse until she went to nursing school in Ontario in her 20’s. She didn’t marry my Grandfather until her late 20’s, had her children in her 30’s and worked as a nurse in Detroit until her 70’s. She always had a positive outlook on life and a laugh that would turn into a “hissing fit” because of her asthma, which made all around her giggle. What do you do in your free time? Brent: I use those ten seconds to fantasize about having free time. I’m only half-joking. Hobbies are a bit on pause with three boys seven and younger. Every moment my wife and I have we try and do something for the kids. The park. Hiking, playing baseball in the backyard, reading together, teaching them to ride a bike, fishing, playing piano. I don’t have children that will just sit and watch a movie. I don’t know if it’s their age but they are just nonstop. My wife refers to them as tiny tornados. When I do have time again, I’d like to resume flying. I have my pilot’s license and love the beauty of the world seen from the air. Kathryn: Traveling if I have that much time. Otherwise running, golf, hiking, kayaking and family and friend time. Honestly, I love taking my dog for a walk on the greenway too! If you could only eat one type of food for the rest of your life, what would it be? Brent: Is this my opportunity to plug Outback Steakhouse and hope they mail me an honorary-Aussie free-food-for-life card? Kathryn: Soup. My Dad was our primary cook growing up and never wastes food. You can make soup out of anything. What is your idea of a perfect vacation? Brent: Watching fish swim around a coral reef in a sea so

With two fund-raising events a year, the charity has donated over $350,000 to Forsyth County Schools to improve the use of technology in the classroom and at home by providing devices and home Internet for those without it. At Morrow Family Medicine, we know that you have many choices for healthcare, but we will strive to be the best choice for you. We are a technologically advanced, yet “old-fashioned” family practice. The last perfect trip I had was in Costa Rica, where I kayaked at night in bioluminescence water, climbed a 200 foot tree, hiked through the rain forest and swam in the river (yes, I got ticks). I even tried surfing and ate a termite! Flights and weather were perfect. Locals were amazing. Can’t wait for the next perfect vacation. What is something embarrassing about yourself? Brent: Um, I never remember birthdays or anniversaries etc. Not because I don’t remember what day they are but because I don’t ever know what date it currently is. Oh, and I once was backstage a Miley Cyrus concert. It was a friend’s fault I promise! Kathryn: I used to be amazing at remember peoples’ faces and names. Now I’ve turned into what I used to make fun of my mother for. Sigh. What is a long-term goal? Brent: More than anything I want my kids to grow up to reach their potential and be happy. Kathryn: Ditto to that. Happiness and health for my children and never stop learning. Specialist in Integrative Oncology Cancer Treatments Including: IV Vitamin C Fractionated Chemotherapy Nutrition Supplementation

Improving cancer treatment Brought to you by — Jonathan Stegall, MD The Center for Advanced Medicine Q: How is cancer treatment different today than it has been in the past? A: The field of oncology is changing rapidly. We now have more tools in our tool chest than ever before, ranging from chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation to nutrition, supplementation, and stress reduction Dr. Stegall therapies. The art of cancer treatment today is to choose which treatments are best for each patient on a case-by-case basis, in order to maximize treatment effectiveness and minimize side effects while enhancing overall health. This field is known as integrative oncology, and I believe it is the best way to treat cancer. Q: How do you choose which cancer treatment(s) to recommend for each patient? A: I view each cancer case like a fingerprint – no two are exactly alike. Each patient’s internal environment is a unique culmination of his or her specific cancer diagnosis, genetics, lifetime environmental exposures, and even emotional stressors. Every detail matters. Using a combination of advanced diagnostic and lab testing, as well as a thorough understanding of each patient’s unique history, a personalized treatment plan is developed. This is contrary to the one-size-fits-all approach many oncologists today are still using.

Q: What advice would you give to patients investigating cancer treatment options for themselves or a loved one? A: Knowledge is power! I encourage patients (and their families) to do their research and not feel rushed into a decision. Oncology can be a very fearbased specialty if we aren’t careful, and I find that approach to be counterproductive. Choosing which treatments to pursue is a huge decision, and patients should feel confident in their decisions. However, spending too much time trying to find the perfect treatment is likely to be detrimental, not only because many cancers are aggressive, but also because there is a lot of bad information out there (especially on the internet!). Q: How can patients get more information? A: The best way is to visit my website, cancersecrets.com, where I share a wide range of helpful information in a variety of formats. My bestselling book, Cancer Secrets, can be purchased there in paperback and Kindle formats. My podcast, The Cancer Secrets Podcast, can also be accessed on the site. Finally, I post regular blog posts which are archived there. My goal is to provide as much information as possible. For those individuals looking for an integrative oncologist, my office number is (770) 551-2730, and my practice website is tcfam.com.

How do your teeth impact your facial appearance? Brought to you by — Dr. Sarah Roberts Crabapple Dental

F

ather Time can affect your smile in many ways. You may have noticed your teeth discoloring but you may have not noticed the gradual wearing down of your teeth with the passing years. All teeth wear down with time including the back and front teeth. The result is not just an older looking smile but an aged facial appearance.

How can a non-surgical facelift help you? When your facial features grew, they developed around the framework of bone and teeth to create the youthful face. As the teeth wear this results in a shrinking face that loses its proportion. The result is an aged face that is rounder and shorter vs. less of the elegant oval. BEFORE You may notice these specific changes: • Your lips change shape, becoming thin, compressed, and wrinkled • Jowls appear as excess fat and skin begin to sag at the jaw line • A deep crease develops between your chin and lower lip • The skin of your lower face becomes squished • With an overall result in a sagging facial appearance, more wrinkles, and an appearAFTER ance that is older than your true age. A nonsurgical facelift restores your teeth to their youthful proportions, and when we do that, we change your face back to the way it used to be. Many of the above changes you may have noticed will be minimized or eliminated. Why would a nonsurgical facelift be better than a surgical facelift? With a surgical facelift the Dr is working with the worn tooth structure and bone that they find in the face to correct sagging skin. They pull the excess skin up and back to tighten and remove any excess skin. The look can often be unnatural over the aged teeth so this look may or may not be for you. With the non-surgical facelift, we look to restore the proper proportion to the teeth and the skin and muscles naturally accommodate to the more youthful position. And if you decide that a full facelift is still in order because you just want one then you will look that much better if you fix your teeth too before the procedure!
