Summer learning & fun “What will we do with the kids this summer?” Are you one of many parents plagued by this question as the 10 week summer break looms? Maybe you have several weeks covered with sports camps, vacations, and visits from the grandparents. But you still have 4-5 weeks to fill up. The Goddard School campuses located on Bethelview Rd. in Cumming and Old Atlanta Rd. in Suwanee have great options for you. With the ability to do as little as 2 weeks, and as few as 2 days each week, The Goddard School provides the flexibility you need this summer. With weekly field trips, special visitors, and other fun-filled opportunities, your search is over for filling those summer gaps, or if you need the full 10 weeks. Both campuses are SACS accredited, as well, so we find fun ways to keep our students’ minds active. We hear from so many Forsyth educators of the struggles of those early weeks of school as the

students brush off the cobwebs from their summer vacation. Our summer camps will be powered by STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math) related themes, trips and visitors, ensuring your kids will be having a blast while being mentally stimulated, as well. Both campuses are equipped with indoor gymnasiums, multiple outside play areas with specialized turf, and technology learning opportunities in the classrooms. Both Robin Ray (owner, Old Atlanta location) and Jean Croft (owner, Cumming location) have been with Goddard for more than a decade now and boast two of the most experienced and tenured faculties in the business. So don’t wait any longer! Schedule your visit today so you can see first-hand what sets The Goddard School apart from your other options this summer. We’ll look forward to meeting you and your family soon!

Montessori Kids Academy is located at 3034 Old Atlanta Road in Cumming, next to the Publix shopping center. We are a SACS/CASI accredited school and a member of the American Montessori Society. We pride ourselves on having highly qualified, experienced teachers who are passionate about the Montessori philosophy and guiding children along their journey of learning. We currently participate in the Georgia Student Scholarship Program, a tax-savings program created to enable parents to use their money tax-free for education. Montessori Kids Academy offers a traditional Montessori student-focused constructivist teaching style. Our growing school teaches children from 18 months to 3 years of age in our preprimary classroom, 3 years to 6 years of age in our primary classrooms, and 6 to 12 years of age in our elementary classrooms. We strive to maintain a low student to teacher ratio in each classroom. The school is housed in a 20,000 square foot, state-of-the-art building complete with a children’s garden, outdoor classroom, spacious library, learning kitchen, computer lab, indoor café, outside picnic patio, two music rooms, and traditional Montessori furnishings. The following daily enrichments are offered as part of our Montessori curriculum at no additional cost: Coding and Robotics, Spanish, Music, Art, Cooking, Physical Education, Tai Chi and Organic Gardening. Even our Pre-Primary students participate in Physical Education, art and Spanish.

Transportation to and from regular field trips is provided by the new Montessori Kids Academy school bus. In addition to regular field trips that are off-site, we have many different visitors such as the Forsyth County firefighters, police and K-9 unit, Recycling Center, the Reptile Man and many other people who help complement our curriculum. Students enjoy daily yoga and journal writing in their classrooms as well as the computer lab. Montessori Kids Academy gives parents quarterly reports of their child’s progress, as well as frequent parent education nights, student presentations, and school social events. We want our families to feel like they are part of our school family. Montessori Kids Academy also offers an academic S.T.E.A.M. summer camp where students can learn while having fun. While at camp, the students will continue with Montessori Language Arts and Mathematics materials and lessons. The students will also participate in weekly field trips, either in-house for our youngest campers or off-site for the older students. Every day has an exciting new activity and each week’s theme will bring new excitement to the students as they learn about the world around them as well as tap into their creativity and imagination. We invite you to our upcoming open house March 25th, from 11:00-2:00, or schedule a tour to see our traditional Montessori School that makes a difference around the world as well as at home.

Strong kids, rock star role models In today’s world, kids need camp more than ever. It is the ideal escape from the pressures and messages that bombard them from every side. Every camp wants to provide an experience that is memorable, fun, and that has lasting meaningful impact. Strong Rock does, too, but there is more they hope campers will take home with them. James and Corie Himstedt, the owners and directors, understand parents are not just looking for nostalgic moments of childhood past. Parents want to choose experiences for their kids that will help them develop the social skills, moral character, and practical tools necessary for success in an ever-challenging world. The counselors and staff at Strong Rock are serious about their responsibility as role models. They take pride in the quality of instruction they deliver and their greatest pleasure is seeing campers grow in knowledge and character. Outside of skill classes, counselors look for opportunities to

help campers develop meaningful relationships, navigate good decision-making, wade through moral challenges, and discover what God wants them to know about Him and themselves. Strong Rock is a co-ed Christian camp for 1st through 11th graders, offering a variety of skill classes, exciting evening programs, and genuine biblical discovery. Their Open House is Sunday, March 26th, from 1:305:30pm. It is the perfect opportunity for campers to see some of what to expect from their Strong Rock experience. After a short tour, families can grab a snack and head off to enjoy activities. Campers will meet some of the staff, and parents will have the opportunity to spend time with the directors. The camp is conveniently located 1.5hrs northeast of Atlanta in Cleveland, GA. For more information, please visit www. strongrockcamp.com or call Rebecca at (706) 348-1533. Come see why at Strong Rock everyone is family.

7 reasons teenagers need to attend summer camp Courtesy of Marine Military Academy Structure & routine Who says teenagers should sleep in and relax all day during the summer? That’s what Saturdays are for! Teens attending summer camp have an easier time getting back into the school routine than those who didn’t follow a schedule. Exercise Most summer camp activities are physical, and don’t require the use of a phone, computer or television. Campers will naturally work out their bodies as they swim, hike or play ball. Even at academic-based camps, teenagers are more likely to exercise than they would at home. New friends Summer camp is the best place for teenagers to make new friends. They can expand their social circle – and their Instagram followers! Social skills Summer camp helps teenagers fine-tune their manners and communications skills because they must meet new people and interact with them for days or weeks at a time. Teens with good social skills also have greater self-

confidence. New challenges Whether it’s riding a horse or swimming for the first time, summer camp allows teens to challenge themselves and try new things in a safe environment. When they discover they can do it, it gives them an instant shot of self-esteem!

Self-confidence & self-esteem Any victories teenagers experience at summer camp (a new skill, award, leadership position, etc.) will help build their confidence and self-esteem. Why are these traits important? Successful adults don’t lack either one! Independence At some point, all kids have to

“leave the nest,” and summer camp can help teenagers and parents prepare for that day. Teens who spend weeks away at camp learn to become more independent. Because they’ve learned how to rely on themselves to a certain extent, these teens are not as nervous when they move away to college … and neither are their parents.

For the little stemist in your life 1997, owners Bob and Sue Hagan have created one of America’s finest summer science and technology camps. The original business operated under the name, Summer Science Day Camps, Inc., which is still the affiliate company name. Bob and Sue have a combined 30 plus years of teaching experience and both hold a Master’s Degree in Education. The first summer camp was called “Special Effects” which taught campers the science involved in Hollywood’s Special Effects techniques. As time progressed, additional age groups and science themes were added. Beginning in 2001, Camp Young Scientist was created to accommodate children ages 6-8. Each year additional Science Camp themes were added and there are now 48, and counting, offering exciting projects and experiments for kids ages 4-15! In 2015, we added Tech Scientific to our name to reflect our new emphasis on technology camps. We are now known as Club SciKidz/Tech Scientific. We have recently added a great variety of new camps: Coding for P-K, Waterbotics, Minecraft, EV3 LEGO Robotics, RPG Gaming, Mobile App Creation, Java Programming, and Advanced Veterinary Medicine. Camp days are Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm. Pre and Post camp hours are available. There are 14 locations available in Metro Atlanta. Milton Montessori expands in 2017 Milton Montessori School started in January 2008 as Red Apple Montessori. Back then, there were only two classrooms, one Toddler and one Primary. Through the years, the school has added two additional classrooms, and now, Milton Montessori School is set to open their new 6000 sq. ft school building in the summer of 2017. The expansion will allow Milton Montessori School to offer Montessori programs from infants through third grade. While the school will utilize the original school building for the new Lower Elementary program, the Infant, Toddler and Primary classrooms will be located in the new building. Along with the new building, there will be additional playground space added with new equipment, and the outdoor learning environment will include a newly expanded garden. While the growth of the school has added more classrooms and space, several key things remain the same. The teaching staff at Milton Montessori has been the same since the early days of the school. As the classrooms were added, the Montessori teaching staff grew too, and they have stayed. This Montessori teaching staff has around fifty years of combined teaching experience, and that is not the only thing that sets Milton Montessori School apart from other schools. Another valuable asset is the number of children in each class. The new classrooms will offer space for twenty Primary children in the classrooms. This lower number of children will allow more individualized time for lessons with students, while still

offering a large enough group for socialization within the mixed age group. The new building opens this summer, and Summer Camp is right around the corner. Milton Montessori School will offer STEM Summer Camp from June 5th through July 28th. The

STEM camp will offer campers lots of hands on work to nurture the curious spirit of the child. There will be in-house field trips to further support the STEM learning. For more detail please check www.TheMiltonMontessoriSchool.com

Is your child getting the sleep they need? A significant amount of behavioral and learning issues in children are due to lack of sleep. Brain synapses are created during the day at a rate of 800 per second during times of cognitive stimulation. A brand new synapse is a very fragile thing immediately after creation. The brain takes care of this via a process called neuroplasticity. During sleep, the brain concretes these connections together making them much stronger. It's done during "slow wave sleep" in the hippocampus for vocabulary and during Stage 2 Non- REM sleep for motor skills. Any emotional/social memory is solidified during REM sleep. A child's sleep is qualitatively different than adults since 40% of children's sleep is spent in “slow wave sleep”. That's ten times more than an adult’s sleep pattern. Facts are retained and solidified during this 40% period. Missing a single hour of sleep can reduce the cognitive maturation process the equivalent of two years. The ability to "catch up" gets lost if the sleep loss in chronic. A lack of sleep causes a lack of attention span and debilitates the body's ability to extract glucose from the bloodstream. This is the energy that all cells use to function, especially in the prefrontal cortex. Less sleep means less attention, less focus and less self- control. Improve your child's sleep patterns by removing access to electronic devices from their bed-time routine. With enough sleep, children will be happier, smarter, more focused and will develop a brain that is ready to handle their busy lives.

Oak Grove Academy serving north Fulton and south Forsyth since 1998 North Fulton and Forsyth's Original All-inclusive Summer Camp, Oak Grove Academy has been providing a carefully selected but diverse schedule of activities (both on and off campus) since 1998! Children are in developmentally appropriate groups, all with an extremely low counselor-to-camper ratio, to ensure that each camper safely and completely experiences Oak Grove Academy Summer Camp. Oak Grove Academy’s summer camp program is truly unique, in that • It is led by educational specialists who are assisted by monitors with specific developmental experience, in the subjects they’ve been carefully selected to impart • Arts and crafts are led by artists with a penchant for teaching, and in addition to creative and unique projects, Oak Grove Academy summer campers receive in depth exposure to all mediums • Sports are both individual and group, both ball and racquet or stick

oriented, and flow from initial orientation to in depth strategy and advanced level performance/practice, by the close of summer camp (children will enjoy 14 sports during this time). • Field trips are educational, exciting, pointed, and above all, numerous Campers experience achievement and attainment, while learning and honing such skills as collaboration, perseverance, self-reliance and strategy. We also provide private movie screenings every Tuesday, along with continuing a beloved Oak Grove Academy Summer Camp tradition, Aquatic Center Fridays. If your child is between 4-10 years old and you are looking for a safe, well-rounded and extremely enjoyable yet educational way for them to spend their summer break, look no further. How youth team sports are shaping kids' and teens' values on and off the field Sportsmanship on and off the field: Coaching today's youth to work as a team (BPT) - 2016 will be remembered for is its exciting and emotional highlights of sports teams working together to achieve new heights, from hometown heroes to some of sports history's greatest athletes. Whether it's a neighborhood scrimmage or a national championship, experts agree that the benefits of belonging to a team are significant, and they range well beyond physical exercise. These important experiences teach lessons that help shape kids and teens' outlooks about themselves, working with others and the world around them. Boys & Girls Clubs of America, through its national partnership with Buffalo Wild Wings, has introduced tens of thousands of kids and teens to various sports through its popular ALL STARS program. ALL STARS is Boys & Girls Clubs of America's leading team sports program, offering opportunities for Clubs around the country to organize football, basketball, cheer, dance and step programs. Based on observations from participating Clubs around the country, here are the top life lessons instilled by being part of a team and how participation can help kids and teens feel a sense of belonging and acceptance. Teamwork: By working together on a team, kids and teens can learn not only how to lead, but also how to follow directions. The ability to work well with others will help them at home, at school and at game time. Young people also experience the satisfaction of working together toward a common goal, which is an essential skill to learn for successes down the road. Sportsmanship: Whether in sports, with family and friends, or at the workplace, it's important to know how to properly handle winning and losing. Kids and teens who learn that it's okay to lose - and how to act when they do, gain an important skill to help them throughout their life. Through sports, they can learn to play fair, act with humility and handle both victory and defeat with grace, style and dignity. Strong character: By mastering athletic skills, players gain self-confidence that carries through to the real world. By practicing regularly they learn discipline and responsibility. By playing in a

fast-paced game, kids and teens learn to handle stressful situations and make quick decisions. By being part of a team, young people experience a sense of belonging while building valuable friendships. What's more, when parents and caregivers gather to watch games, it can strengthen communities and provide a sense of unity. Healthy lifestyles: Three out of 10 youth are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Finding fun ways to keep kids and teens active will help fight this growing epidemic. Team sports provide a great opportunity for young people to get moving. Because it's fun, they often don't even realize its exercise. By promoting an active life-

style from an early age, caregivers can help today's youth learn healthy habits that can have a lifelong impact. Practice makes perfect: No one throws a perfect spiral or hits a threepointer the first time they try. To improve at sports, you need to practice. Sports teach kids and teens that if they want something, they have to work for it. Practice and proper preparation are key skills throughout life - whether for a big game, big test at school or any of life's big challenges. Want to help encourage kids and teens in your community to play team sports and learn these important life lessons? It can be as easy as visiting a local restaurant. Through its Team Up for Kids initiative,

Buffalo Wild Wings supports ALL STARS, helping to teach sportsmanship, promote positive self-image, build character and encourage healthy, active lifestyles of our nation's young people. Buffalo Wild Wings' guests can support this important cause with the purchase of sauce and seasoning bottles sold in-store or online, with $1 from each purchase going directly to Boys & Girls Clubs of America. By 2020, Buffalo Wild Wings will have donated more than $16 million to fund football, basketball, cheer, dance and step programs, as well as facility renovations at local Boys & Girls Clubs through ALL STARS grants.
