What a year ... 2020 has been a particularly trying year for most businesses. I heard from a lot of businesses at the start of the year that were rocking and rolling. The economy was good, new customers were abundant, and hiring and training new employees was steady or expanding. And then the pandemic hit.

We were all thrown off by an invisible assailant that threatened not just our businesses, but our livelihoods and our families. It was, and in many cases still is, a very scary time to manage the day-to-day of running a business.

But we have persevered. We put our heads down and marched forward. Many businesses made dramatic changes to their models and some did not make it through at all, but the ones who did have shown that resilience in the face of adversity pays off. Something about the old adage that what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger… Now, I think our customers appreciate what we do a bit more than they did before. They’ve seen what it could be like without us and stepped up to keep businesses afloat by finding creative ways to patronize them throughout our struggles. Employees have stepped up more than ever to take on new responsibilities and do what needed to be done to keep the lights on. They have shown courage, patience and tremendous mental fortitude. So, when we started working on our 2020 Best of North Atlanta contest in June, we weren’t sure what to expect. I didn’t know if we as a community were ready to celebrate during a time when so much was still uncertain.

Yet, you all responded. Over the course of about a month 3,200 businesses were nomminated for awards from over 80,000 votes. 200 would go on to be named winners or runners up.

We’ve been running the Best of North Atlanta contest for about 15 years now, and I can say without hesitation that this year’s honorees are beyond deserving. Businesses reflect on Best of North Atlanta recognition BY MATT BRUCE

pair of Alpharetta companies took home the most prestigious honors from the 2019 Best of North Atlanta award festivities. The awards are handed out each year to businesses deemed to be at the forefront of their communities. Appen Media Group has sponsored the contest along with an annual Best of North Atlanta Awards Gala for the past seven years. The banquet for 2020 had to be called off due to COVID-19. More than 30,000 voters cast ballots for their favorite businesses in 114 different categories. BurgerFi was the recipient of the 2019 Pillar Award. The honor is presented to an outstanding local business with a track record of excellence that has had a positive impact on the community. BurgerFi is a popular, eco-minded restaurant chain that specializes in grass-fed Angus beef burgers free of hormones, steroids, and antibiotics. Ron Altman and his wife Terri opened the Alpharetta location in 2013, and it has been named one of North Atlanta’s best burger joints every year since. Last year, BurgerFi racked up awards in multiple Best of North Atlanta restaurant subcategories, winning best family dining honors and voted runner up in the best patio dining category. “It is a huge honor to be recognized in this contest,” Ron Altman said. “Delighting our guests is what we strive and work so hard for. So, what makes this most cherished is the fact that the award is earned by votes of guests and people in the community.” BurgerFi is part of a growing movement to change the way people eat burgers by serving a better quality of fresh, hormonefree meat that’s healthier than the beef at most fast-food restaurants.

“The world is not short on burger places,” Ron Altman said. “So for us, it was about coming up with a new generation, a healthier version of one of the most popular meals in America. We have a healthier option. So you feel great after eating it and it’s a natural, clean product.” NexSeason Transitions was the recipient of the 2019 One to Watch Award, which honors an up-andcoming business in the North Atlanta market striving to foot itself as a growing leader in the community. It’s the third year in a row NexSeason Transitions has been recognized as one of the area’s best resources for aging adults. The Alpharetta company was voted a Best of North Atlanta Senior Information Service winner in 2018 and 2019. Sherri Selman and Lisa Wilson co-founded NexSeason Transitions, which serves the metro Atlanta area, in 2017. There’s is a partnership that marries Wilson’s years of real estate expertise with Selman’s real-life planning and caregiving experience.

NexSeason Transitions aims to be a turnkey solution for senior home transitions, helping families map out life for their loved ones after a health crisis forces them to vacate their home. The company counsels families through the process of setting up in-home health care for loved ones, moving family members to assisted living facilities and liquidating assets. NexSeason Transitions works with over 80 vetted vendors to be a one-stop shop, providing families all the services they need through the transition. “We put together a roadmap for them and we manage that whole process for the families,” Selman said. “We’re a company that goes that extra mile, meeting and listening to the particular needs of our client. We look at the entire picture of what needs to be done and handle every step.” Selman dealt firsthand with that sudden upheaval in 2014 when her

husband was completely disabled from a stroke. A few months later, her father suffered a debilitating stroke in her home, and she had to find him a full-time caregiver in Alpharetta while liquidating her parents’ longtime Missouri home and relocating her elderly mother to Arizona to be closer to relatives there. Meanwhile, Wilson is a senior real estate specialist of nearly two decades who has sold more than 500 homes in the Atlanta market. Upon her father’s sudden death, she had the responsibility of relocating her mother from Florida to Georgia. Winning the One to Watch Award was significant, Selman said. “It’s very gratifying because what that shows us is that we’ve been recognized as a leader in the community,” Selman said. “And it just really confirms that what we’re doing is a much-needed service to help families when those rough times hit.”

Best Audiologists of North Atlanta 2020! WHAT IS HEARING LOSS? Hearing loss or hearing impairment is when a person experiences the inability to hear - either a little or a lot. Most people lose their hearing gradually over time and it is usually due to noise exposure in their daily lives (ie: aerobics, spin class, concerts, clubs, movies, church music, lawn equipment, power tools, firearms, etc). We tend to gradually lose our hearing over time. Hearing loss can occur in one or both ears and varies from mild to severe. Some people can experience sudden hearing loss which requires immediate attention. Hearing loss occurs at any age, therefore it is important to include a hearing test as part of your annual wellness check for early detection and intervention of hearing loss. WHAT IS TINNITUS? A sound perceived in the ear(s) or head that is not generated from an outside source. Ringing, hissing, roaring, and crickets are just some of the terms used to describe tinnitus. WHAT IS HYPERACUSIS? Hyperacusis is characterized by an over- sensitivity to sound, also defined as a collapsed tolerance to normal everyday environmental sound, which can cause physical pain or discomfort. Hyperacusis can range in severity (mild to severe) and may negatively affect a patient’s quality of life. A person with hyperacusis tends to minimize or avoid daily activities as well as excessively wear ear plugs or earmuffs for fear of being exposed to sounds that may (potentially) be harmful to their ears. I participate in one of three exercise classes offered daily and I also walk a mile every morning. Residents can attend water aerobics classes at the Celebration Village pool on warm days. I enjoy playing cards and billiards several times a week. There is a trivia competition every Tuesday evening; my team has been successful many times. There are current and classic movies in the theater offered five nights a week. You can also learn to paint or enjoy a weekly craft in Colors, the art studio.

There are several weekly spiritual hours, a book club to review various selections, regular documentaries and guest speakers. There are twenty residents who serve as ambassadors in the community to welcome new residents and encourage them to participate in the lifestyle reviews. This determines how successful each resident is in the Masterpiece Living program. Celebration Village is a wonderful place to grow up! I don’t ever want to leave, as my apartment reminds me of my lifelong partner; she is with me every day. Dr. Taylor, congratulations on another win for Best of North Fulton 2020! This marks your 3rd year being named both Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist in North Fulton since opening in 2017. That’s quite an accomplishment. To what do you attribute your continued success? Dr. Taylor: Thank you Alyssa! Well, as I’ve said in the past, I believe that my patients understand our sincerity and our dedication to our patients’ healthcare. Kathryn and I and our amazing team all honestly care about our patients and their well-being. I hope that that sincerity comes through during our interactions. We always strive to give our patients our complete attention and to learn more about an individual as a person as well as a patient. There are plenty of times when a patient brings something to our attention or compels us to do additional research, and Kathryn and I are constantly collaborating on our patients’ behalf. I believe that comes through. All of that, and my awesome dad jokes are a big hit. I’m a father of three boys ages seven, five and two, so I

have plenty of time to practice my material. Kathryn: I agree with everything that Dr. Taylor said, especially how nice the patients are to laugh at his jokes. Our team really is wonderful. We have experienced and caring team members. And we have received a lot of compliments that the practice has a personal and “boutique” feel, even as we deliver care that is scientific and academic. Alyssa: Kathryn and Dr. Taylor, how is everything going in this odd Covid time? I believe Kathryn joined the practice in March? I bet that was an interesting time to expand? Dr. Taylor: We are beyond grateful for the addition of Kathryn! She really is a fantastic provider and is knowledgeable and experienced in dermatology. Most importantly, our skillsets really complement one another. For example, my focus in the vein clinic portion of our practice has been on treating venous disease that results in leg swelling and pain, and Kathryn has years of experience performing aesthetically-focused cosmetic sclerotherapy. She brought PRP for hair rejuvenation to the practice as well as chemical peels and is an expert Botox® and filler injector. The addition of another provider also means that we are frequently able to accommodate patients for same day or next day appointments. Covid was inconvenient but the slowdown also allowed us to make sure Kathryn’s integration to the practice was seamless. Alyssa: Well I think that’s enough serious business for now. I thought we could ask a few casual questions to allow your readers get to know you both a little better. If you won the lottery tomorrow what would be the first thing you did after you cashed it? Brent: I would probably pay off the mortgages of my family and all my

staff. And I would buy some new socks because mine are pretty sad right now. And some chocolate chip cookies. Kathryn: Flee the country and not tell my husband. No, seriously, after working so hard to put myself through college and my medical training, I would love to set up an educational fund for young adults from my hometown in Michigan so they could receive higher education and not have to take half of their adult life to pay it off. If you could immediately become fluent in something, what would it be? Brent: Italian. Feeling like a local in a foreign country has to be fun, and I think Italy tops my list. Kathryn: Spanish. I was able to apply a lot of my “Splanglish” while living in South Florida, but Dr. Taylor puts me to shame when he is able to communicate fluently, and I only understand a portion of what he or my patients are saying.

What were you like in high school? Brent: I was very smart. And very naive. I had very little time for much besides keeping my nose to the grindstone but was still happy and people still joke that in the back of my head I seem to have The Girl From Ipanema playing on repeat. Kathryn: I moved halfway through my freshman year, so it took me a bit to find my place. I was outgoing and took part in Cross Country, Basketball, Track, several academic and service clubs, played piano and worked as a server at a restaurant. I also enjoyed a lot of time on the beach of Lake Superior (cold, but true) Who is someone you look up to? Brent: My dad. Sounds cliché’ but it’s true. My dad is just such a wonderful man. and really instilled in me a strong work ethic and a compassionate heart. I am beyond fortunate for my family. Kathryn: My Grandmother. She grew up on a dairy farm on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and taught school in a one room schoolhouse until she went to nursing school in Ontario in her 20’s. She didn’t marry my Grandfather until her late 20’s, had her children in her 30’s and worked as a nurse in Detroit until her 70’s. She always had a positive outlook on life and a laugh that would turn into a “hissing fit” because of her asthma, which made all around her giggle.

The last perfect trip I had was in Costa Rica, where I kayaked at night in bioluminescence water, climbed a 200 foot tree, hiked through the rain forest and swam in the river (yes, I got ticks). This FDA approved retinal photo AI read achieves 87% sensitivity and 90% specificity in finding this potentially blinding diabetic eye disease compared to an average of 41% sensitivity with board-certified ophthalmologists. We were also the 2nd practice in the U.S. to start diabetic neuropathy ultrasound treatments for diabetic peripheral neuropathy pain and numbness that has shown amazing results. Throughout this COVID-19 pandemic, safety for our patients while delivering excellent healthcare has been our passionate goal. We were one of the first

primary care practices in our area to adopt car visits and telemedicine visits in mid-March to minimize our patient’s exposure to Coronavirus during their visits. All sick patients are evaluated in their car and tested for COVID-19, strep throat, or flu if it is appropriate, or evaluated by a telemedicine visit to avoid spread to other patients. Only well patients and employees are allowed in our office after they pass a temperature check and symptom screen. Mask and social distancing are enforced. Intensified cleaning protocols are in place. Patients are placed in a private exam room as soon as possible after arrival. Employees wear appropriate personal protection equipment (PPEs) to avoid contracting COVID-19, and employee testing and quarantining is expedited if the need arises. Extended office hours starting at 7 AM Monday through Saturday help give our patients the flexibility they need in scheduling appointments. We offer an Optifast weight loss program, dietitian services, and clinical research opportunities at our location. Many diagnostic tests are performed in our office such as ultrasounds, ECHOs, nuclear stress tests, lung function tests, dementia screenings, and lab draws to increase convenience for our patients. We squeeze orange juice every morning. It takes 5 to 8 oranges to make a single glass of juice. We buy all of our eggs from a local egg farmer. He delivers hundreds of dozens of eggs to us several times a week and we hand crack them all. Other breakfast restaurants buy eggs that are bagged and cracked by a machine in advance. We clarify butter to season all of our pancake griddles and to cook all of the eggs in. Our pancake batter is made from scratch with our own sour starter. The list goes on. ROBINSON PLASTIC SURGERY

CELEBRATING THE MAN BEHIND THE PRACTICE Sharing part of the story that shaped our wonderful surgeon

“I truly love my job,” proclaims Dr. Burke Robinson, FACS. “I wake up in the morning excited to come to work. I have the ability to help people change their lives and that’s how I always have seen my role. Whether it is correcting a child’s protruding ears to resolve the bullying, to improving the overly distracting nose of the shy overlooked teenager, to the reconstruction of the grandparent ravaged by an aggressive skin cancer. Over and over, I have seen how physical self-image really impacts a sense of self-worth and personal confidence. It can be frustrating and difficult if your external appearance doesn’t necessarily match who you feel you are on the inside. When I help patients overcome that frustration, they are no longer focused on imperfections.” Dr. Robinson learned the impact of that type of frustration early in his life. He watched his mother, who was diagnosed with MS when Dr. Robinson was barely in preschool, struggle to overcome the limitations of her body. She remained upbeat and determined, despite the difficulty of raising her three children while the disease ravaged her system. Later, when Dr. Robinson reached his teen years, his father suffered a neck injury that would render him disabled. As the oldest child, Dr. Robinson became the caretaker - helping out with younger siblings, running errands, and taking his parents to all their medical appointments. “Yes, I guess I was the Uber of ‘74,” he quips. “I shuttled them back and forth, so I was regularly on the patient-side of things when I was growing up... the worry,

the confusion, keeping up with medications, I understand all of that very well.” With both parents at limited capacity, financial strains in the home tightened severely. Dr. Robinson stepped in as much as possible to assist with bills and expenses. “For a while, neither one of my parents could work. It was tough, particularly at that age, “he recalls. “I got a job after school as the janitor... basically, I’d go to school all day, and then start cleaning up after my friends. Not fun, but it had to be done.” Even with that pressure, he achieved an academic level that qualified him for scholarship funding at The University of Arizona. Off at school, Dr. Robinson continued to work and save in order to send money home. “Once, when I took the Greyhound bus home for Thanksgiving break, and my mom met me at the station,” remembers Dr. Robinson, “then went by the grocery store to do some shopping. As she checked out, I noticed her trying to hide from me that she was using food stamps.” His extracurricular jobs provided valuable experience that leave an indelible impressions for his future approach as a physician. “I’ve been an orderly cleaning bedpans and administering enemas; I’ve been an ER clerk typing forms and balancing triage,” avows Dr. Robinson. “Everyone on staff deserves to be treated with the utmost respect. It’s a team effort. The people around you contribute to your success.” The work ethic instilled in him was too strong for anything to set him back. “Both of my parents stayed positive. Seriously, my dad should be a motivational speaker,” Dr. Robinson asserts. “Education’s a big focus for our family and I took that seriously. I still do for my kids.” Academic excellence in college led to medical school and opportunities from there consistently propelled him forward on his path. Every time an insurmountable hurdle would

present itself, something would turn up to lift him over the road block and set him back in motion. From the sudden donation of the car he needed to complete his clinical rotations in med school to a last-minute change presenting an incredible residency opportunity to the perfect match for his fellowship linking him with a physician who’d become a lifelong friend and mentor, Dr. Robinson credits faith. “I see God’s hand in all of it. All of it. No doubt.” In 1995, Dr. Robinson was scouted by huge Atlanta ENT practice of over 40 surgeons and moved here to join their team as their facial plastic surgeon. The medical group continued to grow, perhaps too quickly, and eventually folded in 2001. That’s when he decided to branch out on his own into private practice. “I took a gamble but I knew it was right for me. From the day I established this practice, I’ve wanted the primary focus to be client relationships and a familyfriendly atmosphere for my team. In fact, I consider the staff to be a family. Family means more than anything else. When my kids were growing up, I’d coordinate their calendars with mine and managed to only miss five of their events in all those years. In my eyes, my children are definitely my greatest pride over any award I’ve ever won.” That perspective balances every part of the business. Dr. Robinson’s steadfast resolution to uphold a beneficial quality of life translates into low staff turnover, and staunch loyalty from employees and patients alike. He sees everyone as an integral part of the overall system, and values his opportunity to serve others as part of his career. “I’m an empathetic person,” he admits, “and [in medicine] if you’re not compassionate, what are you doing in this profession? These are big changes in their life and I do get choked up when patients are

overwhelmed by their results. It’s the ultimate satisfaction to give that kind of joy to someone’s life. You know, a few years after this practice had become successful, my mother, who I lost last year, sent me a prayer. I keep it on my desk at the office. Part of it says ‘Oh, Thou kind and gracious Father, grant me an ever grateful heart...Teach me, O God, to be rich in good works, always ready to come to the aid of my brethren, ever willing to communicate according to my ability...’ and as I read the verse each day, I feel centered in this purpose.”
