Edible Art Doreen Joy Barber takes a look into Sarah Hardy’s curiously consumable world If you’ve paid attention to quirky cake-based phenomena in London within the past year, you may have seen an interesting edible piece crafted by Walthamstow’s Sarah Hardy and not even realized it. Did you catch the gory chocolate heart at this year’s Anatomical Heart Valentine’s Day Pop-Up? How about the shellshaped spongecake at Tate & Lyle Tasting House in Soho? Or perhaps the grisly murder scene rendered entirely in cake and chocolate to promote the DVD release of The Helpers horror film -its decapitated head of orange drizzle cake featuring on the Jonathan Ross show? Even Hardy’s family fabrications can be cringe-inducing, like the Christmas cake that resembled a raw turkey. Hardy studied sculpture and spent fifteen years in art and model-making, constructing props for museums, shop windows and television shows prior to starting her career in cake artistry three years ago. With these artistic skill-sets, combined with her unique creativity, Hardy won the Professional Cake Decorating Category at The Cake & Bake Show in 2012, where she met Miss Cakehead, one of the judges and the founder of Eat Your Heart Out, a collective of food artists. Through this group, Hardy has collaborated with several other artists and bakers, including Chris Verraes of Cake

for Breakfast. With Verraes, she has formed Boy Eats Bug, a soon-to-belaunched cadre of confectionary that will produce an array of chocolate specimens inspired from nature. These fantastic chocolate insects will be on display in Walthamstow’s Vestry House Museum, where the Victorian Parlour transforms into “Darwin’s Parlour,” a delectable homage to the living world. Appetite attendees will be happy to know the chocolate creepy-crawlies will also be available for purchase. Chocolate is a new material for Hardy as a cake and confection artist and designer, but one she has been quick to master. Working with Eat Your Heart Out, Hardy cites it as “a great way for members to showcase their skills,” enjoying the affiliation with other talented food artists and getting niche technical advice in a pinch: “Oh my God! My vertebra is sticky!!” Hardy’s fantastic and macabre inventions have attracted a clientele of cake fanciers, including betrothed couples, television personalities and a rock n’ roll legend. Luckily, you don’t have to get hitched or sneak into a rock star’s shin-dig for a taste of Sarah Hardy’s creativity. Stunning examples of what Hardy can fabricate with sugar, icing, cake and other edible material can be seen on her website. Much of it features the tiered layers familiar to many a wedding, yet

Grow your own – whether in a window box, garden or allotment – for the freshest, healthiest vegetables and zero food miles. By Caramel Quin

Hardy’s cakes posses more panache and elegance from an array of influences outside conventional bridal magazines and mediums. Working closely with her clients, Hardy develops bespoke cake creations for an array of events. Sarah Hardy’s fascination with and inspiration from the natural world is a reoccurring thread in her work. Her sugarcraft examples include intricate flowers, colourful birds, rotting fruit and insects. Hardy’s studio is home to a collection of highly detailed drawings of dragonflies and other multi-legged creatures, which she’s drawn from specimens donated by friends and clients. As she told me, musing over a cup of tea, “The dark bits and the light, fluffy bits—it’s all life.” Hardy has lived in Walthamstow for around eight years, and enthuses it as a place full of creative people “who do things,” as a wellconnected “village” to raise her two children in. Having children

prompted Hardy to shift from on-site model-making and propbuilding to an artistic outlet that allowed her to work from home. She remarked, “My mother ran an antiques business from our home, and that was an early example for me on how a home-based enterprise could work.” It was an experience she wanted to emulate in her own way with her own family, and as her cakes and confections capture the imaginations of foodies in London and beyond, Sarah Hardy feels lucky to be in her Walthamstow neighbourhood. rowing your own veg is about so much more than food. Even if you get a disappointing harvest (and last year’s weather certainly wasn’t kind) it’s healthy in other ways. And you don’t need an allotment, or tonnes of spare time, to get started. I go to the allotment and the rest of the world disappears. Time ceases to matter, despite the chimes from the town hall clock overlooking the plot. The healthiestlooking foxes you ever saw scamper past, bees make honey in the plot next door and millipedes curl away from my fingertips as I dig. And yet I don’t actually have an allotment plot. The waiting list at many local sites runs to years, so while waiting my turn I help a good friend with her plot. Many allotmenteers are happy to let a mate muck in. There’s holiday cover in the summer when everything needs watering once if not twice a day, digging and weeding, building and fixing. So I’m a willing apprentice, paid in fresh veg. I learned the basics of food-growing in my back garden, building raised vegetable beds with scaffold boards. I rang a local scaffolding yard and asked if they had any spare, broken boards and incredibly they gave me (and even delivered) a load of good ones for free. Raised beds are ideal for east London gardens because you can improve the soil by adding good quality compost on top. Weed and then dig over the existing soil spitdeep (as deep as a shovel), then put the new compost on top and let the worms gradually mix it all together for you. Highlights of my veg patch have been potatoes (my children dig them up like buried treasure), perpetual spinach (if I could grow only one vegetable, this would be it – healthy organic greens year-round with very little effort) and purple sprouting broccoli (a traditional allotment staple now rightly seen as a delicacy).

As a foodie, I must say more about home-grown spuds. Baby new potatoes can go from plot to plate in under 15 minutes – I guess they cook faster because they’re so plump and moist, fresh from the ground. The skins pop as you sink your teeth into them and they’re so tasty they only need a dot of butter and maybe some fresh herbs. If you don’t have a garden, start growing in window boxes and say goodbye to overpriced supermarket herbs. You can probably squeeze in some “cut and come again” lettuces too, which grow happily through the winter especially if you put a piece of horticultural fleece (a thin, white fabric) over them in the coldest weather. If you’re thinking of growing your own veg, consider putting your name down on the waiting list for your nearest allotment, see walthamforest.gov.uk. In a couple of years, when you get to the top, you’ll hopefully be ready to commit the time to it (you can always say no if you’re not). At a few pounds rent a month, allotments are cheap as chips but much healthier and tastier. Meanwhile grow at home, help a friend on their plot, or if a local friend doesn’t use their garden, ask if you can turn it into a mini allotment in return for a crop share. Or grow communally and learn skills from others as you go. OrganicLea is a workers’ cooperative growing food just north of Walthamstow and is always looking for volunteers. See organiclea.org.uk for details of their monthly open days and plant sales. However and wherever you decide to grow your food, you won’t regret it. I find it’s a calm, meditative space away from life’s business. I get a workout in the fresh air from all the digging. And last, but not, least I get healthy, cheap, seasonal, organic fresh food. CHINGFOrD FOOD WALK Saturday 9 June, 2pm-4pm Discover Chingford’s food and drink history through its pubs, cafes and restaurants (some long gone, some still with us) with professional tour guide and local resident Joanna Moncrieff. Find out why the pub built as the railway hotel is nowhere near the station, where the 19th Century daytrippers to the Forest stopped for post-walk refreshments and hear about some of the unusual foods eaten during Tudor times at Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge. The walk takes place on Sunday 9th June to coincide with the monthly Farmers’ Market. This walk includes tasting stops along the way and lasts approximately 2 hours. 1–25 August with an artists’ reception on Thursday 1 August from 6.30 Submit your artwork to our Salon Style Exhibition and fundraiser for the E17 Art Trail. Penny Fielding Gallery & Interiors is hosting the first E17 Art Trail Summer Show which will showcase artwork by both emerging and established artists including painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking and architecture. Around 200 artworks will be selected by our hanging committee to go into the show – there is no limit on the number you can submit. There will be a fee of £26 for each artwork selected and proceeds go to the E17 Art Trail.

Exhibiting artists will also be eligible for the Penny Fielding Gallery Art Award Prize, where our judges will select 3 artists to take part in a group show at Penny Fielding Gallery & Interiors in April 2014.
