Statement of intent

My chosen theme for this work is flaws and perfections. I decided to chose this theme as i felt that there were many different directions that i could take and many different things that i could look into to develop my ideas. I also feel that i can link these two things together well looking as perfections and flaws together as well as individually. I am intending to carry out research into various different artists looking at different types of flaws and perfections. Artists who take things that would have once been considered a perfection and made it a flaw through the editing, or an artist that captures things that are considered a flaw which were once considered a perfection. I am going to be looking at Aaron Siskind and his work looking at different textures and corrosion. Thing that you wouldn’t normally think of as a flaw and some things that once would have been pristine and perfect however over time deteriorated. I am also going to be looking at the artist Jesse Draxler, this artist is someone who takes something that is normally considered perfect, normally popular models and manually edits them in different ways to distort the images and turn them into a flaw. I intend to interpret both of these artists and then develop them in my own way, i will take a series of images for Jesse Draxlers work that I can later edit in different ways either through Photoshop or digitally. I will also take a series of images interpreting Aaron Siskinds work, looking at different surfaces and textures to capture and then editing them in a similar style as him, enhancing the white and darkening the blacks as well as adding clarity to the images to make the flaws really stand out. The techniques i am planning on looking at throughout my work are a range od digital techniques as well as manual techniques. I will also trying to explore different techniques through my photoshoots, such as getting someone to scan their face, looking at techniques using my models such as scrunching of the face as well as the technique of scanning. I will also be looking at different ways that i can manually edit my images, through tearing and sewing and much more. I will also be using photoshot to create many different edits and techniques so that i can make my images a flaw through cutting out peoples face, or deforming their face into something that isn’t considered the norm. During this project i hope to learn a little bit more into the meaning of flaws and perfections, explore the deeper meaning of photographers works and also look into how society considered flaws and perfections. I also hope to develop more skills through the editing software’s available to me as well as learn how to use Indesign as it is something new to me and i would like to be able to use it to the best i can. I feel as though my final format for this project will be something that has a mixture or flaws and perfections and also a mixture of manual and digital techniques. I hope to link pieces of my work together in order to develop my ideas and try to link my work throughout my magazine also.

Ansel Adams

Aaron Siskind is a photographer that contrasts well to Ansel Adams photography, His images represent flaws well, he captures flaws through the RIPS AND TEARS of paint in his images, His images seem oppourtunist and can be interpreted in many different ways, through capturing TEXTURES , whether this is through the use of worn out paint or other textures around

Aaron Siskinds

Ansel Adams is a photographer that tkaes images of different lanscapes around the world. His images represent flaws and perfections, as all of the things that he captures are perfect representations of different LANDSCAPES, His ANGLES and use of PERSPECTIVE of his images link well to the Theme of Flaws and Perfections

Jesse Draxler

Jesse draxler is an artist who edits various different images mainly focused around people and fashion photography. She MANUALLY edits her images with various different techniques, Distorting the images to make them a flaw, she takes images that would normally be seen as Perfection and then edits them into something that can be seen as a flaw. Se use of COLLAGING can help be develop my work.

Stephen Gill is another photographer that takes images that would normally be seen as perfection, using models within the images and making them imperfect with the things that he SCANS over the top of the images. Circo Totku

Here are a series of images from an artists that i found when researching the theme that I am looking at which is flaws and perfections. Circo Totku is a Russian photographer that bought his first camera when he was only 10 years old and started to capture images. His images represent flaws and perfections as he has taken images of things such as rust, scratched and dirt that can all be viewed as flaws. I have decided to look at this artist as when looking at his images i felt that i would be able to interpret them well along side with Aaron Siskind’s work. I can either set these imgaes up to capture or capture them as soon as an oppourtun appears. There are a range of different ideas that i can adapt when looking at his work also as it is not just one specific thing.

This image by the Artist Ciro represents flaws, this is be something that was once new clean and considered per has over time deminished and and therefor become impe and seen as a flaw. It is represented in a not so ob way. When Ciro was taking images he may not have had f in his mind however in many o images the theme flaws is evi

Totku ecause w and rfect, d aged erfect flaw bvious these flaw’s of his ident.

I could interpret this work by walking around a city and finding various different things tocapture, for example his work ‘Garbage’ can be interpreted in various different ways. Garbagecan be seen as a flaw as it is dirty and the perception of perfection is for things to be clean.

There is a wide range of different teqniques used within Ciro’s photography. He hasnt got one specific style however colour is prominent in his images which can be interpreted into my images also. This is contrasting to Aaron Siskind’s photography which is another artist that i will be looking at focusing on corrosion and rust and flaws. From looking at these images, his photography to me looks oppourtunist, like he has taken the images when he has just been walking around. He uses tightly framed shots to tell larger stories, perhaps the most obvious commonality among Totku’s photos is their ability to arouse the viewer’s curiosity about the truth behind the image. They make you think.

Aaron Siskind

Aaron Siskind is an american photographer. His work respresents flaws through the rips and corrosion of everyday things. Above are just some of his images that i found when researching Aaron Siskins. These are the ones that caught my eye and that I though I could interpret and try to incorporate into my work. He began his photographic career as a social documentarian which is cloear in his series of photographs as they are documenting the corrosion and destruction of man maid things. Since he has died, his legacy has stayed through the Aaron Siskind foudnation that supports contemporary photography. It provides cash grants to individual photographic artist’s on a yearly basis. This just shows how passionate Aaron was about his photography and how he has tried to help others to pursue their dreams also, to become a photographer. Aaron Siskins work focuses greatly on the details of nature and architecture. I could use his use of detail’s of nature in my work through similar ways to he has, capturing cracks and corrosion on buildings and other places. I could also use his way of capturing architecture with the theme of perfection as there are some amazing pieces of Architecture around with sharp lines and parralel that could be seen as perfection. Aaron Siskins work yhas been describes as crossing the line between photography

and painting. This shows in his work as he has captured paint rips and destroyed paintings in a way through taking photos. It is a good mix that I could incorporate into my work in different ways, through manual techniques by painting over some of my images as well as finding different places to take images. He emphasizes the modernist concern with the flatness of the picture plane. He intensifies his approach by capturing images close up and also emphasising the textures and different lines within the imgaes. The black and white effect indensifies the black and whites within the images, darkening the blacks and making the cracks mroe evident.

Favourite Photo

This is one of my favourite images from Aaron Siskins work that i believe shows flaws as well as perfection. I feel as though the parallel lines within the image from the different bricks show perfection, as they are all equal lengths away from each other and all presisley placed. I feel that this image represents flaws from the cracks in the bricks and lines of the images. The image is showing the imperfections of things that we would see in our day to day life but never necesarilly look into in much detail however when you take a close look there are many flaws.

Stephen Gill

Stephen gill is a photographer as well as an artist. He does a range of different style photography. He takes images and then scans objects that relate to the image over the top of them. The two images below this are images that he have taken from different environments, the objects over the images are objects that have been found in the environment. I could interpret his work either through taking pictures and then using objects that are the same colour or associated with the image and then scan them over the top, of incorporate the objects into the image. They create a nice effect and link the the theme well, this is because i can use the objects to make the image imperfect as it is something different and takes a photo that could be seen as perfect and then makes it imperfect with the edit.

Jesse Draxler Jesse Draxler is an artist from the USA that takes photographers photos and then edits them in unique different ways. She either uses found materials. All of the work that she produces is by hand using different materials and tools to create the images such as Xacto’s and also uses wheat paste to create her collages.

He work is interesting and i feel that it shows flaws as they are covering up different things on the person face and also sometimes covering the whole of the models face. This is different from what you would see in magazines such as VOGUE. Models that would normaly feature in magazines such as these would normally be percieved as perfect however the collages edited over them are making them imperfect. This technique could be easily interpreted into my own work by taking something that is seen as perfect and covering it up either through manual techniques or techniques using programmes such as photoshop. This isnt necesarilly showing flaws or perfection obviously, but the iamges make you think into a deeper meaning of what the images is showing or trying to portray.

Blooms

Taxonomy What do you think is effective about this photograph?

-I feel that the objects that have been scanned over the top of this image are extremley effective, this is because they link to the image behind through the use of clothes in which the artist is wearing. The placement of the flowers is also effective as it looks as though she is holding one of the flowers and the flowers looks as though they are part of the image. The colouring of the image is also effective as the tones from the flowers are also represented in the colour of the photo.

What do you think other people would say about this work?

I feel that other people would also see what i see with the placement of the flowers really working well with the image that they have been overlayed. I asked a few different people on what they say about the image to get a true representation of what others see, the response was similar to mine, how the colours of the image work well together with the flowers that have been chosen. They also talked about how the feel as though they are part of the image due to where they are.

What do you think is worth remembering about the photo?

I feel as though one thing that is worth remembering from this photo is the use of dead flowers. It can be seen as something that was once perfect however now a flaw as they are dead as not as beautiful as they once would have been. The image that has been used underneath the flowers is also something worth remembering. The use of a model is something important towards the theme of flaws and perfections also as the woman will be seen as a perfection however the image is viewed as a flaw with the covering up of her body and the dead flowers.

What have I learnt from looking at this photo?

From looking into this photo furthur, i have learnt how Stephen gill have represented flaws and perfections in different ways, from the flowers that were once beautiful seen as a flaw when old and dead as well as the use of the perfect model as the background. It is showing me how i can present

Interpretation

Here is my interpretation of jesse draxlers work. These are the photos that i decided to edit using photoshop in similar ways to Jesse draxler however, different as she uses manual techniques to edit her images. I used various different techniques including overlaying, rubbing out, drawing lines and also using the liquifying tool to create the top right image. These images create flaws and perfection through the edits on them, i have taken an image that can be seen as perfect, and created them into something imperfect through nlocking out the eyes and mouth and covering the face. I decided to do this as i felt that these were some of the things that people are normally insecure with on their face and wanted to portray this through my images.

My Photos

Here are my images interpreting Aaron Siskinds work, i walked around looking for things that i felt represented some of the images that he has. I looked for different textures around corrosion and also graffiti. Though Aaron Siskind’s images are predominantly in black and white, i decided to edit some it colour as i felt that some were more effective when the colours were enhanced.

Camera Raw Settings Here is a screenshot of the edit that i have done on each of these images for the Interpretation of Aaron Siskinds work, firs of all i converted te image to greyscale on Camera Raw, and then went in to enhance different parts of the image to make them stand out more, This particular image if for the image to the right. I have increased the contrast which make the dark areas of the image darker and the lighter areas and decreased the grey within the image, I have also darkened the blacks more in order to enhance the image furthur as well as slightly lighten the whites to keep the image defined. I have also enhanced the clarity which increases the definition of the pixels to sharpen the image and make it more defined. This edit has a massive effect on the image seen from the before image.

Corrosion Black and White

And Decay

F4.4 1/60 ISO 160

Here are some more images that i took when looking around for different things that represented a flaw through corrosion and decay, these were my favourite photos that i found which represented the theme well. I have decided to edit these images in black and white as i feel that they really highligh the imperfections in the images, from the rotted wood on the image of the door to the rusted chipped wood on the door handle. I have not simply edited in black and white i have enhanced the contrast in the images as well as decreasing the blacks and enhancing the whites to create the edits that i have.

Colour Edits

Here are some images that i have taken when looking at the theme Flaws and imperfections, I have walked around looking for objects or things that represent a flaw that i can interpret, I looked for things that were broken or destroyed either man made or natural. This was either through rust of paint, destruction of walls and cracks in the ground. I walked around a mile radius of where i lived and was able to find a range of different examples of flaws. All of these images are representing flaws as they once would have been considered perfect, no rust, no cracks or not chips in the paint, however they have either been detroyed over time from the raing or other factors of broken through fault such as the walls. This is a good example of flaws as if shows that you can find flaws in many different places.

Blooms

Taxonomy What do you think is effective about this image?

This image is effective as there are many things going on around the woman in the water however she is still the main attraction of the image. The

nature around the woma is also effective, it looks as though she is being encaptured by the woods. The clothes in which she is weraing is also effective within this image, it makes you think deeper into the meaning behind the image and why the woman is in the water.

What do you think other people would say about this work?

It looks as though the woman has been left in the pond, her expression makes it look as though she is dead. It is interesting as she is still fully clothed. Is there a back story to this art?

What do you think is worth remembering about the photo?

The main thing worth remembering within this photo is the woman who is in the water, this is because there could be many different reasonings behind why the woman is in the water. The flowers placed around the woman are also worth interesting and something that can be seen in some of my images when i explored flowers.

What have I learnt from looking at this photo?

From this image i have learnt that the placement of the model is important and that you can still have a busy background and have an effective image. I have also learnt that nature is a good prop for images and to not be too scared to use flowers within my images. I have also learnt that colour is important, the bold colours from the flowers make them more prominent and obvious in the image and this is important as if the colour within the flowers were dull then they would be less visible. I should enhance the colours within my images to make the colour stand out

Inspired By

Stephen

Gill These are some images that i have taken being inspired by the work of the photographer and artist Stephen Gill, his work is interesting as he incorporate different objects over the images to distort them and turn them from something perfect into a flaw. I have taken these photos in inspiration of his work using a background that relates the the image as well as using flowers and mother nature incorporated into the images. The represent flaws and perfections as the model’s face is considered perfect and then the flowers are over the top blocking out parts of the models face making the images a flaw as they are obscuring the face. The reasoning behind me using flowers and nature as these are things that are grown naturally and are considered a natural beauty. Two perfect things together have created something that can be percieved as a flaw or imperfection as the face is covered. I have used simple edits on these images as i felt that they didnt need too much doing to them, i have simply enhanced the darks and lights in the image as well as increasing the clarity to give the images more depth.

Overlay

Here is an image that i have overlayed with flowers, using one of the images that i took when looking into Stephen Gills work. I have used dead and fresh flowers surrounding the model so that she is encaptured by something that is percieved as a flaw or a perfection. I have used a range of different natural objects that i could find to link the objects with the image itself.

Overlay vs Scanning

Here are the edits that I have produced when looking at Stephen Gill’s work, i have produced two different techniques, one being scanning flowers over the top of an image and the other placing flowers over an image and capturing the flowers on top. The scanned images are on the top with the images on the bottom. I decided to do both techniques as I felt that i could manipulate the images more when they were images as I could see where i was placing the flowers, however in contrast to this, placing the flowers on the scanner was interesting as there was the unknown of how the images were to turn out at the end. I initially wanted to just scan the images however it appeared more difficult than first thought as the scanner that I used found it difficult to focus on the image as well as the flowers distorting the images behind. Howver I was able to get a few good ones. I decided to use flowers as the link well to the backdrops that i have used in the image. I decided to use simpler image as the ones which i conducted these techniques onto as i felt that it would be more effective and if i was to use ones that already had flowers then the image would be too over powered by flowers.

Link Corrosion

Here i have taken some of the image that i took when looking at corrosion for the theme of flaws and the images that i took inspired by Stephen Gill’s work and have overlayed them together linking them futhur and changing the image from something more perfect into something considered more of a flaw. I have edited the images in black and white as i felt that it gave the images a better effect than when in colour.

Scanning

Scanning For this photoshoot i have taken a series of images using a scanner. I have decided to do this as i felt that i would be able to presents flaws easily using a scanner as it can created different images that you may not necessarily be able to create using an ordinary image. This is shown in the two photos on this page. These were both captured using one scan. To create these effects i had my model move with the scanner, She placed her face at the top of the scanner, when the face had been scanned, scanned the top of the face at the botttom to create a photo that looks as though it has been cut in half and then placed in different ways. For the second image on this page, i got my model to move her face slowly from one corner of the scanner to the bottom corner to create the elongated stretched look that i have achieved. I have decided to edit these images in black and white as i have wanted to enhance the clarity that i have captured from the scanner, the black and white creates a more effective look and creates a more dramatic look. These images represent flaws and perfections through the way that i have got the model to move and shape her face in different ways. In the first series of photos, i have got my model to squish her face against the scanner in different ways to distort the image to represents flaws rather than perfection.

Movement Here are a few more images that i have taken using a scanner. With these images, i had my model more slighty, either by shaking her head back and forth or simply blinking her eyes, i did this as it created subtle movement within the images as the scanner followed her and therefor has distorted these images.

I continued to have my models faced squished against the scanner as it represents flaws in the themse flaws and perfections well as her face had become a flaw due to the squish of the face as well as the small movement.s

For the image to the left , is when i have made my model keep the rest of her face still and then got her to speak so that when the scanner went past her mouth as she spoke, it scanned the movement of the mouth. This distorts the image and represents flaws as the rest of her face is perfect.

I had my model have some of her eyes open and some with them closed. The image to the right is my model opening and closing her eyes with the scanner to create the effect that it has created.

ReshootFeaturing Window

Here are a series of images that I have taken exploring on from the scanning photoshoot that I also produced. I felt that i could create the same sort of thing however not with a scanner using a camera so that i could take different angles and also have more scope to do things as the images are not restricted to the scanned. I used a glass pannel in order to create the effect that i have, i got my model to squash her face against the glass in different ways in order to create different face movements. I feel as though this creates a good effect as you cannoy necessarily see that i have used a glass pannel in all of the images and her face just lookes squased.

I have edited these images in a way to make them seel cold, however still dark and dreary, this is because these images represent flaws rather than perfection and wanted to keep the edit true to the image theme. I feel as though the reflection over the mirror also creates a rawness to the images and adds something different, though i didnt necesarily want it there, it creates more of a flaw in the images.

Black and white edits

I have decided to edit the photos in black and white as well as colour as a black and white image can create a completely different feel to an image and i wanted to portray this through my edits. The black and white edits create more rawness highlighting the different areas of her face more as well as enhancing the areas in which have been squished against the glass. I also decided to edit these in black and white as one of these images will be an image that i will be using in my final piece and i would like all of the images to be black and white so i can do various different edits to them such as colour threaded sewing over the top of them as well as burning wholes into the images. I felt that black and white images would be more effective with the edits and i wanted a theme running through my final piece keeping all of the images that i use black and white.

Techniques Sewing

Digital Edits

Here are some digital edits that i have pr pannel. I have taken parts from two differe together. I have used the paint tool on ph image. I have tried to distort the areas w the perspective of the image. These images them with something different, something s

roduced on the photoshoot that i did looking at faces squished against a glass ent images and warped them ontop of another image to try and link and joing them hotoshop to create the look of the sections being stitched on top of the other which I have overlayed by making them bigger and or angled slightly to change s show flaw as i am replacing different parts of the models face and replacing so common in todays society as so many people want to change the way they look.

Scrunching Images

Burning Techniques

I have decided to burn certain images from different photoshoots that i have taken, this is so that i could explore different ideas towards my final piece and experiment in order to see the different outcomes of the images. I feel that this created a cool technique as it is distorting the images and making them a flaw as they have been burnt.

So Far So far i have produced a series of photoshoots looking at different distortions of the face and moulding the face into different shapes using a window.I have also producecd a range of edits joining together different images using a stitiching effect.

I have also produced a similar series of images howver using a different model and also using a scanner, this was so i could also try and capture movement within the images. This enabled me to continue the series of distorting the face.

So far i have also produced a series of images interpreting different artists. I have interpreted two artists Aaron Siskinds and Jesse Draxler. I have also produced a series of images looking into Stephen gill’s looking at different ways that i could use his style of photography in mine.

Ina Jang

After looking at the distortion of the face, i decided to develop my ideas and look into completely obscuring the face. Looking at Ina Jang’s work, it represents flaws well. She completely covers the face in most of her images and also has sometime has some of the face showing. I have produced a photoshoot creating something similar to Ina Jangs work, i had my model stand against different tecture background to then cut out her face and replace it with the background. Some she has used the same colour to cover the face and the background which i have also looked at.

Rene Magritte Rene Magritte is an artist who also looks at distorting the face. I have used his style of work when editing my images. linking the corrosion images that i have taken with the images, overlaying them on top of the models face, as well as cutting her out of her normal environment and placing her ontop of another image. These images show flaws as they are taking something normal, and creating it into a flaw through the cutting out of the face, to the cutting away of the face and the overlaying. These images are a furthur devlopment of the images in which linked to the work of Ina Jang, I only discovered the link after producing the edits.

Scars

Here are some images that i have taken that i feel represent imperfections. they are a series of images of scars on the body. I decieded to use scars, as they’re are a common thing associated with flaws on the body. I was lucky enough, however unfortunate to have someone close to me that has a series of scars on there body all with different stories. The majority of the images are from the same scar however from different areas of the scar to show to length. Some of the images are from different scars, such as the scar on the hand as well as the one on the wrist, I have decided to edit these images in black and white as i feel that the black and white colour adds to the definition of the scars and really defines the shadows and creates a different feel to the images than if they were simply in colour. Black and white images also creates a more sad feel to the whole image.

Jiro Yosh

hihara

Jiro is a Japanese artist who focuses on simplistic images of shapes, with his most common shape being a circle. His images are interesting as they are so simple and make you think about what the meaning behind it. the images really are. His image’s link to the theme of Perfection and flaws as he has a range of perfect circles, shown in the image above, compared to the unperfect circle, shown in the image to the left. His use of block colours, black as a background and a bold colour for the circle make the images more effective. The image of the line represent flaws as line isnt completely straight and the drip at the end also adds to the flaw of the image.

Jiro Interpretation Here are the images that i have taken looking at Jiro Yoshihara’s work, He is a simplistic artist who produced simple paintings of different shapes most commonly a circle. Here i have taken ink to a piece of paper that i have folded in different ways to make the images different. When taking these images i used a mixture of black and white backgrounds, as well as different lighting. I tried to incorporate different colours into my work such as the yellow that is present in one of the images.

When producing the piece of paper that i have captured, i used black ink, as well as yellow in one of the images, I drew a square for my shape in interpretation to Jiro’s work and then dripped ink at different bends within the images, I didnt want to over power the paper as the simple the better. I tried to take a range of different angles, obscuring the images and trying to hide different parts of the image. When taking these image’s i used the manual focus. F 5.6 1/60 iso 400

It is simplistic, however the paper is hites in the image to make them fresher and also cooled down the acks to make the shadows slightly more prominent however not too fect however when you think more into the purpose behind the imges and the sharp edges within the images represent perfections.

TechniquesCropping

Cropping is a technique which can change an image here i have taken two images from my photoshoot and cropped them in different areas. This distorts the image as sometime it is not obvious which part of the image is what and what the crop is actually supposed to be. It is effective as you cannot see what the actual image is, however you can slightly make out what is is of. My favourite crop is the black and white scan. This is because although you can see what the image is, the zoomed in crops are effective.

Techniques Repetition

Repition is a series of the same photo overlayed ontop of each other decreased in size each time. I have also decreased the opacity of the largest image increasing it until the smallest. Repition creates a different illusion to if a photo was just plain an simple. Especially when the opacity has been changed as you can see the other image behind. My favourite repition image is the one on the right, this is because i like the image that i have used and is effective as the images are not uniform which people would normally expect.

My favourite image is the shape technique, this is because the different shape that I have used creates a different effect compared to the normal rectangular image. The placement of the different images is also something different.

Techniques Rotation

Here are some techniques that i have created using the images i took of paper. This technique is Rotation, i took one photo and then rotated it in different ways to create this effect. The image below is a combination of 4 of the same image however fliped and rotated in in different ways creating a mirror effect. I have also created one in a different shape. Rotation creates something new and different and can change a boring photograph into something interesting. My favourite rotation is the one below, this is because the image fits well together when rotated and it is something so simple however effective.

My favourite rotation of these image’s is the one where I have used 4 photos and fliped them all in towards each other. This is because they all look as if they are looking into at each other which creates something unique and quirky

Possible Idea:

Book

The first idea that I have had for my final piece will be to create a book with a series of images that I have taken on each page. , I will be using a series of different techniques, including scans, manual techniques as well as images that i have taken using a camera. I will use 6 images in my book, the first image that i will use will be a scan, the second will be a scrunched up image of my models face and then the third will be a normal image of a scrunched up face. This will be to show a range of techniques and will also be showing flaws and perfections through the scrunched up faces, The scanned images that i will be using for the book will be in the style of my own photoshoot that i took when exploring different ideas. I will use a range of differnet coloured photos, colour as well as black and white photographs. All of the images will be distortions of the face, therefor representing flaws which is the theme that i have decided to look at, the distrortions will be through the squished face as well as the scrunched up paper.

Idea 2

Here are another set of images that i am potentially going to use for my final piece. These images will be placed on mount board and placed in a zig zag so that there are images on the back and the front of the boards. I will be apply different techniques to each different images. Including sewing drawing and more. Some of the images that i am using have also been edited using Photoshop so i am showing a range of different techniques including digital and manual. I have also used some black and white images and some in colour.

Possible Hinges for the edges I will be joining together the pages in a constertine style so that the images can stand alone and you are able to view them when you walk around, I will have three pieces of mountboard joined together by hinges so that i can fold them together. I will be using white card as i feel that the white will go well with the edits that i am planning

Manual Techniques Final Piece

-

Here is one side of my final piece showing three of six images. I have tried to equal the images on both sides, each side has an image using fabric, one where the models face has been cut out and then one where the background has been digitally edited with something different. The first image on this side of my final piece is using fabric, i used a black and white fabric with a lot of pattern as the image has a fimple background and not much going on, i decided on black and white as the image is in colour. I have cut out the face ofmy mode; and then placed the fabric underneath the image so that you can see it through the top, to link the images furthur, i used white thread to stitch around the fabric to look as though i attatched it using the thread. For the second image, i have also used threat once again, I decided to block out where her face was once completely using black and white thread to do this in different angles. I also carried it throughout the rest of the image, sewing different patterns into the brick work of the background. For the final image on this side of my final piece, Which is my least favourite, i have used my white pen once again to draw around the models face to make it seem more animated as well as drawing in the opposite direction to the thread in the image over some of the brick work in the background which was digitally edited on. I cut the image in half diagonally joining them together using white and red thread.

Manual Techniques Final Piece

-

Here are some images of the pictures that i edited and arranged for my final piece. This is the other side of my zip-zag presentation showing you three of the six images. I have tried to use a range of different techniques throughout my final piece trying to link the photos together as well as the two sides together. I have also got an image where i have used fabric within the edit. Because the image was black and white, i decided to use a colourful fabric as the background, I didnt want the pattern to be too big as I didnt want the digital edit to be overpowered or ignored. For the middle image, i use one of the images where i digitally edited my models face out which showed flaws as her face had been removed, something out of the ordinary. I decided to bring back the features in her face using a white pen, outlining her face and the features on her face as well as giving some defninition to the hair and also in the background of the image.I have also used stitching in this image carrying on the them of all of the other images. I only used a small amount of stitching as again, i didnt want to overpower of shadow away from the main focus of the image which is the different lines defining different areas of the image. The third image that i edited, i focused on writing on this image however still tryed to incorporate stitiching using red thread to highlight certain words. The writing behind the model links to the theme of flaws and perfections. This image that i have used is a digitally edited image when i have taken an image of a texture and placed it behind the model. Representing flaws.

Presen

Here is an image of my final piece from above showing yo of mount board to cut out 6 pieces of A3 sized boards f on a two mountboard slab’s stuck together. I decded to d attach the hinges which can be seen in the second pictur to close my final piece and also open it up flat. I simpl per glue and leaving them to set for a few hours. This i themselves because of the hinges so you can walk around I decided to use the zig zag technique as i wanted to be you to still be able to see them. This

ou the presentation of my work. I used 2 A1 sheets for me to be able to join together. Each photo is do this so that the card was thicker and easier to re up close. I bought this so that I would be able ly stuck the hinges to the pieces of card using suis a good effect as the boards are able to stand by the final piece and see all of the edited images. e able to use a range of different pictures and for way they can be viewed each way.

Evaluation

For this project, i was able to produce a final outcome which reflected the work i have produced in the rest of my magazine. When planning my final piece, i decided that i wanted to incorporate different things that i had done together, this included manual techniques and digital techniques which linked my corrosion images to my re-shoot images. I wanted a simplistic by effective presentation for my final piece so that they image were big enough to see in detail however there were not too many images being shown at once. My concertina presentation held together from hinges superglued to the mount board, You are able to walk around the final piece seeing all of the different image. I wanted to use some unique manual techniques that i hadnt seen before, using the sewing technique which i had used previously and linking it with different fabrics. I used a series of images from my reshoot photoshoot where i had a model stand against different backgrounds so that i could cut her face of her body and then replace it with the backgroun, i use three images with this technique, two with the technique of cutting out the background of my model and then replacing it with an image from my shoot looking at surfaced and corrosion and then two looking at the use of fabric for the manual technique. I decided to produce this for my final piece as i wanted to show a range of different techniques and show how you can link two things together to make something that is considered perfect into a flaw. The techniques that i used for my final piece and throughout the production of my work were similar as i didnt want to experiment with something that i hadnt done before. I used the sewing tehcniques that i used throughout my work on my final piece in different ways on each image. This was so i could link all of the image

furthur. I used the dewing technique to sew on word’s in which i had written using a white pen which was another technique of mine, sewing an image onto fabric as well as sewing fabric onto an image. I also used sewing to distort one of my final piece image’s by covering the models face as well as using it as an accent on one of my image and also joining a cut up image together. I have also used pen throughout my work, drawing on different image’s using words and also drawing on new faces to those images which had been digitally edited without one. The digital edits that i used were overlaying, blending together and also using the lasso tool to remove the models face. Throughout the rest of the book the techniques that i have used have been scanning, through my photoshoot using a model to move her face and squish her face against a scanner. Scrunching different images up to distort them furthur and obscure the faces of the models. I have also used overlaying throughout my work, overlaying different images over the top of other to link them together. I have also used scanning to scan natural objects over the photoshoot in which i created inspired by Stephen Gill’s work using natural objects such as flowers to make a photo more interesting and obscure. I have also produced some techniques looking at peeling and revealing, having two images over the top of each other and then ripping a part of it to reveal the different image below. The techniques have helped me to develop the idea of flaws and perfections furthur through the joining together of different images as well as techniques to obscure and distort different image. I felt that looking at different techniques helped me a lot with the development of my work and towards my final piece. If i hadnt produced the various manu-

l and digital techniques throughout y book, then i wouldnt have produced he various different tehcniques for y final piece. I feel as though the ork throughout my magazine and also hrough my final piece explore the opic well. I was able to research ifferent artists and look into how hey presented flaws and perfections n different ways. I feel that throguout my work i was able to present the dea of flaws and perfections either hrough the raw photos themselves or he edits that i produced. The images hat i took looking at corrosion and ifferent surfaces explore the theme ell, i took image of things which ould have one been new and considred perfect however over the years hey have turned into something that s seen as a flaw. The images that i ook looking at Jesse draxler’s image ay not have been consdiered a flaw s raw images, however when they were dited in different ways, you could leary see that the images are to repesent flaws through the destruction f the model’s face. The raw images ould have also been seen as a perection before the edits. The images n which i took looking at squished aces also explores the topic well as t is another way of deforming the ace and making it unusual , and then urthuring this through the editgs of ewing different iamges over the top. astly, the photoshoot in which i took ooking at different background’s exlored the topic well as i was removng the models face, changing it from omething perfect to a flaw, as somene without a face is unheard of. My car’s photoshoot was something diferent, however i wanted to explore nto something else, something that s commonly considered a flaw. Taking series of images looking at diferent scars. I could have developed his photoshoot furthur however, there as only so much i could do as i only ad one family member who had a seie of scars ont their body. For the ther photoshoot, i could have taken

them furthur through more techniques as well as potentially using different models and also exploring different environment, i could have had my models stand against different backgrounds for the iamges where i removed the face, and also taken to model to a different environment for the photoshoot inspired by Stephen Gill. i could have also taken some of my images on sunnier days or earlier in the day so the lighting would be better. For my final piece, i could have had more iamges and completed more manual techniques to take the outcome furthur , taken a series of new images to use. I feel as though the work that i have produced links to Aaron siskinds work well, The images that i have used as the backgrounds and also over the top of the models face in one of the images were taken from the photoshoot and reshoot that i did when looking at aaron siskinds work. Though not intentional, the images with the cut out face link to Ina Jang’s work which i looked into after producing them. I took some risks with my final piece and the work that i had produced, i wasnt one hundred percent sure on how the manual techniques would turn out, though i had practiced them, there is always fear that something could go wrong, however throughout the course many of the things that i wanted produce came out the way that i wanted them to. What i have learnt from this top is that flaw and perfections are not always obvious and that they can be seen in many different things. I have learnt that you need to think deeper into the meaning of images and what the photographer is trying to show in order to be able to interpret the work in your own way. I have learn that interpretations dont always have to be too similar, just trying to show similar things. I have also learnt how to use InDesign well enough to produce differen layouts of showing my work and enough to be able to work my way around to produce different tehchniques. I have also developed my Photoshop skills furthur learing different ways of editing image to make them into something that could be considered a flaw. I understand that not everything is what it first seems.
