Welcome THE HON KATE JONES MP

Minister for Tourism Industry Development and Minister for the Commonwealth Games It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Stanthorpe Apple & Grape Harvest Festival, one of Queensland’s many great event experiences. Events like the Stanthorpe Apple & Grape Harvest Festival are vital to Queensland’s tourism prosperity, engaging visitors with the locals and the community, and creating memorable experiences. The Palaszczuk Government is proud to support this event through Tourism and Events Queensland’s

Destination Events Program, which helps drive visitors to the destination, increase expenditure, support jobs and foster community pride. There is a story to tell in every Queensland event and I hope these stories help inspire you to experience more of what Southern Queensland Country has to offer. Congratulations to the event organisers and all those involved in delivering the festival and I encourage you to take some time to explore the diverse visitor experiences throughout Southern Queensland Country.

GREG THOUARD Festival President

My warmest welcome is extended to many thousands of people to the Iconic Stanthorpe Apple & Grape Harvest Festival. I know you will enjoy the experience. Over fifty years of festivals along with 10 years under its original name of Apple Blossom Carnival makes this district celebration the second oldest festival in Queensland. Many festivals come and go but the Apple & Grape has continued to succeed and grow stronger. This strength comes from our community who want to see the district and its produce promoted through a fantastic celebration and bring in many thousands of visitors not only for the festival but for many repeat visits. The economic boost to this district and surrounding regions is enormous and the voluntary festival committee is proud of its part. Working alongside a team of 16 Directors who have the community and festival at heart is such a privilege. Their two years of hard work in presenting the festival does not go unnoticed and I invite you to join with me when you see the Directors and the big band of volunteers in their bright gold volunteer shirts, please

say “thank you very much for bringing us this festival”. Four Young Ambassadors proudly promote the festival and this district. The tireless efforts by these Ambassadors, their sponsors, families and friends allows the committee to provide a major program of events for all ages to enjoy. I know the return reward to ambassadors is a whole new set of life-skills earned through development programs and service to community and I know you will become lifelong ambassadors for this great district. The strong support by a large group of continuing and new sponsors indicates their faith in this committee to deliver a quality festival. Thank you and I know you will be extremely satisfied with the huge contribution the committee and volunteers have made to make this 2018 festival an outstanding success. A 10-day program awaits you. A whole new program of events has been prepared along with lots of favourites the rest is all for you to enjoy. Thank you for supporting the Stanthorpe Apple & Grape Harvest Festival. Please enjoy, take away great memories and I invite you to return again and again to this great region.

Proudly supported by Anna’s Restaurant, Amelia’s three dimension drawing will be available for everyone to enjoy over the festival and for many months to come. Amelia left the corporate graphic design/ multimedia world over ten years ago to concentrate on creating artworks across many disciplines including painting, sculpture, illustration and murals. In 2007 she discovered chalk while looking to learn more about drawing and became enthralled in using her art to interact with the public. The Footpath Chalk Art installation will be a surprise and perhaps you can drop by to guess what is about to develop. Amelia is working-up a special treat and we just can’t wait. School groups are especially welcome to watch the installation in progress.

Grape Crush GRAPE CRUSH On Saturday 3rd March, just after the Grand Parade, the festival would not be complete without the iconic Stanthorpe Border Post Grape Crush. Outside the Post Office, the main street becomes the stage for this display of gladiator style grape crushing. There are no rules in the Grape Crush – The contestant who can squeeze the grapes between their toes the fastest is crowned champion. But watch out! Don’t stand too close or you could experience more of the Grape Crush than you bargained for.

CELEBRITY GRAPE CRUSH

We see a little undignified behaviour with our dignitaries as this no-holds barred event takes place.

EDIA AND YOUNG M AMBASSADOR GRAPE CRUSH

TV, Radio or Print media. Which one is the fastest and strongest to beat out their rivals? Our four Young Ambassadors fight for the win! In their last official event for the festival, it can get a little messy as the girls let their hair down.

The Stanthorpe Border Post is proud to be a sponsor of the Stanthorpe Apple and Grape since its inception. We take pride in promoting all the wonderful elements that the Apple and Grape brings to the Granite Belt region.

Stanthorpe R SL Band Parades STANTHORPE RSL BAND PARADES

NAVY & ARMY ON SHOW

Marching bands galore will brighten the carnival area on festival Saturday. The traditional morning parades will feature brass bands, pipe bands and the thunderous sound of marching drum bands. One hundred and forty pipers and drummers from Armidale, Glen Innes, Scots College, Toowoomba, Warwick, Redlands and Stanthorpe will perform their best march tunes and perform in a massed band. Then one hundred and thirty brass band musicians from Stanthorpe, Gold Coast, Warwick City, Dalby and the services bands of Royal Australia Army and Royal Australian Navy will lift carnival spirits. Returning in 2018 is Brisbane St Joseph’s College Red Thunder Drumline which will be performing in the Grand Parade with a huge number of drummers. Adding great marching performances will be Bundaberg Drum Corps and Redland Ladies Drum Corps. Morning parades commencing at 11am and all bands will appear in the Channel 7 Grand Parade at 2pm. Massed band performances after the grand parade is a perennial favourite and the Pipe Band rendition of Amazing Grace is a special festival moment. The Navy Band will perform its moving evening ceremony and Beat to Quarters and Ceremonial Sunset on the concourse of the Stanthorpe Civic Centre at 5pm. The ceremony is amongst the oldest of Naval Ceremonies dating back centuries and it reflects the tradition of calling the ship’s company to Quarters and Action Stations when battle is imminent. Ceremonial Sunset reflects the traditional saluting and lowering of the Ensign at sunset. The beautiful Evening Hymn will be performed and with a volley from the field gun the orderlies will fold the Ensign to the tune Song of Australia before dismounting with Waltzing Matilda. A ceremony not to be missed. The Royal Australian Army Band will perform on a special stage near Carnarvon Bridge from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, another concert not to be missed. It is a first for the festival to have the Army Band perform and it will be a whole new entertainment experience for festival goers. To add more to their already sensational program (correct at the time of printing), the Navy Band will join in for a special accompaniment to the Rossow Bulk Haulage Fireworks Spectacular. Warning – DO NOT MISS THIS!! Both the Navy Band and the Army Band make a return to the Multicultural Carnival and Wine Fiesta at 9.30am and 10.10am Sunday with their Stage Bands performing.

Information about tri-Services (Navy, Army and Air Force) will be in the Family Entertainment Zone and Naval Services will have its State President for Naval Cadets on-hand to help with reforming the local Naval Cadets. A Navy RHIB is almost certain to be a popular stall to visit along with the Naval information team. The Royal Australian Navy Band will make its 4th consecutive appearance at the festival and will provide marvellous entertainment including the traditional Ceremonial Sunset.

THANKS MAJ. PALMER A special colleague of the festival will be retiring from duty in the coming months. It is important to recognise a contribution made by an individual. This vote of thanks is not just about the festival but the outstanding services by Major Graham Palmer and his team to army personnel and families locally an afar. On a recommendation from the Stanthorpe RSL, Maj. Palmer engaged with the festival team and the results have been so rewarding to both his team and the festival. Attendance at festivals is now regular as the Army ASLAV and Bushmaster are an instant attraction for youngsters in the Heritage Bank Family Entertainment Zone and a bit hit in the Channel 7 Grand Parade. For the 2018 festival, Maj. Palmer has been instrumental in bringing back the Army assets and a team providing information on defence forces. He has encouraged support from the Royal Australian Army Band and it is here to provide amazing entertainment - please don’t miss them. “From a casual conversation with one Army Officer, we now have an ever-growing presence of defence services as part of the festival. Maj Graham Palmer CSM, Brigade Welfare Officer, 7th Combat Brigade, we thank you sincerely for your commitment to your job and your support to the Stanthorpe Apple & Grape Harvest Festival. Congratulations on your upcoming retirement”. Greg Thouard, Festival President

Volunteers

The Lifeblood of our Festival

WE WOULD NOT HAVE A FESTIVAL WITHOUT OUR VOLUNTEERS! To all volunteers - Thank you! Volunteers are said to be as the back-bone of our community. They are generally the true heroes who are constantly ready and willing to contribute their personal own time, talents, and as well as their body energy just to help making Apple and Grape Harvest Festival a success. Two hundred volunteers help the festival with a host of tasks. More importantly, volunteers become ambassadors for the region, promoting what it means to be part of community and go about encouraging others to make a valuable contribution. The Committee thanks all its volunteers for the time and effort each and every volunteer puts into the festival.

Since 2010 a very special group of volunteers help over the main weekend of the festival. YWAMs or Youth with a Mission from Brisbane. The YWAM movement started in 1960 and is operating in more than 1,000 locations in over 180 countries. These young people donate their time to volunteer to community groups around Australia while studying and the Apple & Grape Harvest Festival is so pleased to host 40 YWAMs. They are the people that empty the rubbish bins, help move fences, and are ready and willing for any job at a moment’s notice. All with a big smile on their faces! We encourage you to thank the YWAMs over the main weekend of the festival. They are easy to spot, wearing the bright yellow volunteer’s shirt. Or visit the Chai Tent near the Police Station and say hello and thank you.

Congratulations to the Stanthorpe Apple and Grape Harvest Festival on this iconic event. Member for Southern Downs James Lister
