2016 STANTHORPE APPLE & GRAPE HARVEST FESTIVAL

Minister for Tourism and Major Events The Hon Kate Jones MP

Welcome to Southern Queensland Country for the 2016 Stanthorpe Apple and Grape Harvest Festival – part of our vibrant calendar of events that makes Queensland the best address on earth. Experiences are at the core of any destination event and I hope you come away from the Apple and Grape Harvest Festival with some amazing Queensland memories. Events play an important role in showcasing a destination, driving visitation, fostering community pride and creating jobs for the local community. The Palaszczuk Government recognises that events drive Queensland’s tourism economy and we are proud to support this event through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Destination Events Program. Thank you to the event organisers, volunteers, and those who have come together to deliver the Apple and Grape Harvest Festival for Queensland, and I encourage you to make the most of the tourism offerings throughout the destination.

Festival President Greg Thouard Fifty years of festivals is certainly a milestone to be proud of as a district. There are many festivals that come and go but the Apple & Grape has continued to succeed. I am proud to have been part of the festival since 1975 but more proud to lead the team as President for 2016. The team of 18 Directors who have worked so hard for the last two years are our major contributors to festival success. I applaud each of you and the strong network of volunteers who make this festival possible. We have been fortunate to have gained the support of eight Young Ambassadors. The tireless efforts by these Ambassadors, their sponsors, families and friends allows the festival committee to provide a major program of events for all to enjoy. I know the return reward to ambassadors is a whole new set of life-skills earned through development programs and service to community. Thank you to all and with the experiences gained, you will become lifelong ambassadors for this great district. Thank you to the sponsors for your support and I know you will be extremely satisfied with the huge contribution we have all made to make this 2016 festival an outstanding success.

Welcome and thank you for supporting the Apple & Grape Harvest Festival. Please enjoy, take away great memories and I invite you to return again one day to this great region.

To help celebrate the 50th Anniversary, Queens and Young Ambassadors from 1966 will join us as well as Queens of the former Apple Blossom Carnivals 1955-1964. A 10-day program has been reintroduced, the Kinzan Drumming Band from Shiwa Japan will visit our shores, Australian National Buskers will be here, a whole new program of events has been prepared by the committee and the rest is all for you to enjoy.

Tuesday 1 March Tuesday features open gardens, a senior’s concert, poetry with Jack Drake and an evening concert not to miss “Brass, Pipe, Swing & String” at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre. The poetry afternoon features local bush poet, Jack Drake. Jack is a product of the bush who has lived the life he writes about. After years as a horseman, stockman, rodeo competitor and outback showman bush poet Jack recites his bush poetry and tells his stories in verse via his bush poetry performance CDs and books. Born in rural New Zealand in 1950, he is now a naturalised Aussie and proud of it. He recites his own works plus other bush favourites, with fire and gusto to the delight of his audiences both old and young. His life long experience with horses, sheep, cattle and all bush things adds a ring of authenticity to his renditions. The “Brass, Pipe, Swing & String” concert at the RSL Services Club features The String Family, the RSL Pipe Band, the RSL Brass Band & Stanthorpe’s new Swing Band. Entry is by gold coin donation. The Seniors Concert is an Apple & Grape tradition. Enjoy local entertainment, free morning tea and lucky door prizes. Free entry. ART MADE FUN Be enthralled when legendary chalk artist, Amelia Batchelor takes to the streets to entertain Festival goers as she creates a chalk art masterpiece on the footpath outside the Stanthorpe Post Office on Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 March 2016. Amelia left the corporate graphic design/multimedia world more than ten years ago to concentrate on creating artworks across many disciplines including painting, sculpture, illustration and murals. In 2007, she discovered chalk while looking to learn more about drawing and became enthralled with using her art to interact with the public.

The Kinzan Daiko Drummers from Shiwa in Japan are visiting the Apple and Grape Harvest Festival especially for its 50th Anniversary. There has been a strong bond between the two municipal areas and many delegations have been hosted both locally and in the City of Shiwa. The drummers are making a return to Stanthorpe after their first appearance in 2006. They will perform a special drumming exhibition during the Gala Ball. This attracted one of the largest crowds seen for some time in the multicultural carnival and it is expected this will be repeated in 2016. Look out for their performances in the Heritage Bank Multicultural Carnival and Wine Fiesta and in the Channel 7 Grand Parade.

The Montague Fresh Queensland “When in Rome...” Gala Ball will see you dancing into the night, and will feature the band Bassline as well as the Japanese Kinzan Drumming Band.

LIVIo ReGaNo Meteorologist Livio’s parents accidentally met one day over an argument in a restaurant kitchen. Both recent arrivals from post-war Europe, their romantic interlude blossomed into a marriage that produced four children, each from a mixed gene pool of equal parts Italian and German. Livio was the second of their children.

Livio’s expertise has appreciated by audiences of Seven Local News where he has been the meteorologist and weather presenter since 2006. The weeknight news bulletin is the flagship news service of Seven Queensland with Livio presenting nightly weather bulletins in Cairns, Townsville, Central Queensland, Mackay, Wide Bay, the Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba. Livio views weather presenting as Born and raised in Brisbane, Livio completed his physics degree at one of his greater educational challenges – making a tough scientific the University of Queensland before being accepted into the Bureau subject comprehensible to each community in just a two and a half of Meteorology postgraduate training program in Melbourne. LIz caNtoR tV Presenter After a whirl wind year in 2005 which saw Liz beat 12 other contestants to win Channel 7’s reality show “The Mole”, the self confessed water baby has become a favourite on Seven Queensland. At 16 Liz moved with her family from west of Brisbane to Sunshine Beach, Noosa. This saw her say goodbye to her obsession for horse riding and focus on her surfing. Both her father and brother are surfers and Liz was introduced to the ocean before she could walk. She gained a sponsorship from Billabong and was a competitive surfer for five years. Through her surfing Liz traveled to Fiji, Tahiti, The Maldives, Hawaii and Europe, with the likes of Layne Beachley and Lisa Anderson. Throughout her schooling Liz also studied acting. Featuring in Australian films such as ‘Blurred’ and ‘Gettin Square’ as well as

playing Corrine Hardy in ABC’s Blue Water High. Following school she completed a Bachelor of Communication and a course in Meteorology.... while Liz still tries to surf everyday, her gift of the gab, love for writing and strong interest in Media and Journalism saw her follow a different path. These days she is seen hosting the Live Gold Lotto Draws and presents on ratings winner The Great South East. For a state based talent she has a strong and supportive Twitter following and has been invited to fill in on summer radio shows for Nova Brisbane, Sea FM on the Sunshine Coast and Hot Tomato on the Gold Coast. During December 2013 and January 2014 she hosted the summer breakfast show on Sea FM Gold Coast.

Stanthorpe RSl Band Parades Marching bands galore will brighten the carnival area on festival Saturday. The traditional morning parades will feature brass bands, pipe bands and the thunderous sound of the marching drum bands. One hundred and forty pipers and drummer from Armidale, Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Scots College, Toowoomba, Warwick Thistle, City of Brisbane and Stanthorpe will perform their best march tunes and perform in a massed band. Then one hundred and thirty brass band musicians from Stanthorpe, Toowoomba, Warwick City, Western Winds and the Light Horse Band will lift the carnival spirit To add even more to the festival programs the Shiwa Kinzan Drum band from Japan will be performing as part of the morning parades then again in the grand parade. The powerful drumming performance by this band was first experienced in 2006 and to help the festival celebrate its 50th anniversary the town of Shiwa, Japan has sent its band to excite the audiences. Joining the festival for the first time is the Brisbane St Joseph’s College Red Thunder Drumline which will be performing in the Grand Parade - what a performance the festival audience will be in for. The Royal Navy Band Queensland under the direct of Bandmaster Chief Petty Officer Andrew Stapleton has something special in store for the 2016 festival. Leading the Grand Parade will be 20 musicians, resplendent in uniform will be something to see.

Then the Navy Band makes a return to the Multicultural Carnival and Wine Fiesta at 9.30 Sunday with their Stage Band performing the most wonderfully entertaining music. Thank you Navy Band. Then for a farewell from the festival, the Shiwa Kinzan Drummers will be at the multicultural carnival stage in front of the Mayor of Shiwa and official party with a fun performance they say goodbye to Stanthorpe and head home to Japan. The next part of their program features a moving ceremony Beat to Quarter and Ceremonial Sunset. This will be held on the concourse of the Stanthorpe Civic Centre at 5pm. The ceremony is amongst the oldest of Naval Ceremonies dating back centuries and it reflects the tradition of calling the ship’s company to Quarters and Action Stations when battle is imminent. Ceremonial Sunset reflects the traditional saluting and lowering of the Ensign at sunset. The beautiful Evening Hymn will be performed and with a volley from the field gun the orderlies will fold the Ensign to the tune Song of Australia before dismounting with Waltzing Matilda. A ceremony not to be missed.
