Appleton Academy Primary Newsletter
Together with our community, we can achieve extraordinary things.
Welcome
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we reach the end of another school year, I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks for your support and involvement in our school community. It has been a year filled with remarkable achievements, memorable moments, and significant growth for our children.
First and foremost, I want to extend a special farewell to our wonderful Year 6 pupils who will be moving on to secondary school. You have been an integral part of our school, and we have watched you grow and flourish over the years. Your hard work, resilience, and enthusiasm have been truly inspiring. As you embark on this exciting new chapter, I am confident that you will carry forward the values and skills you have learned here. Remember, you will always be part of our school family, and we wish you all the best.
Thank you all for your continual support. I hope you have a happy and restful holiday. We look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday 4th September.
Best wishes,
Miss Clayton Head of Primary
Goodbyes
As the year draws to a close we are sad to be saying goodbye to two long standing members of our primary team.
Mrs Castle has worked in primary for 22 years and has been a fantastic member of our team. She has made a huge difference to many children . We wish her all the best as she moves onto new ventures.
Mrs Ciesielski is retiring after working with us for 19 years. She has been a fabulous teaching assistant and has had a significant impact on the children she has worked with. We wish her a long and happy retirement
We would also like to wish good luck to Mrs Morgan, Miss Holderness, Mr Worger, Miss Taylor, Mrs Mustafa and Miss Bibi as they move onto new roles.
The children began the half term with an exciting trip to Eureka! They spent the day exploring the many role play areas, learning about sounds, bodies and senses.
The children have been working hard on building and forming sentences this half term!
The children have enjoyed the changing weather and have been growing different plants and flowers. They were then able to create observational art of what they had grown.
Year 1
Year 1 were shipmates for the day during their Pirate day. They dressed the part and completed lots of pirate related activities-some may have even walked the plank.
The students also went to Shibden Park and were fascinated by the lovely grounds. They drew some of the flowers and had an enjoyable day exploring and playing .
Year 2
Year 2 had a fantastic trip to Hornsea beach this half term. They splashed in the sea, buried their friends and teachers in the sand, searched for fossils and made lots of special memories.
This half term Year 2 took part in the Ugly Bug ball where they were tasked with creating their own costumes prior to the day. From butterflies and ladybirds to caterpillars and spiders, all pupils made a fantastic effort.
Across the day we created our own minibeast using arts and crafts and made a fact file to go with it, not forgetting the bug ball in the afternoon!
Year 3
Year 3 took a trip to Yorkshire Country Park . To consolidate their learning in science, they had workshops where they looked at different animals such as ferrets and their habitat.
They even enjoyed making pasties from scratch. .
Year 4
In English, Year 4 have been understanding the features of an effective playscript and then have written their own. In groups, they then read these aloud, developing their drama skills.
As part of safety internet day, students in year 4 were designing an online safety advert.
In science, the students have been investigating the digestive system and understanding the key role this has on the human body.
Year 5
Year 5 had a fantastic trip to Yorkshire Sculpture Park! They studied sculptures by our key artists Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth.
We had a visit from the Windrush elders and got the opportunity to perform to them and ask questions about their lives.
This half term has been very busy with exciting events such as sports day and our end of year performance of Shrek The Musical.
Year 6
As part of our English and history unit we have been looking at Ancient Greece and myths and legends. We wrote a 13th labour for Hercules to complete.
We also had the opportunity to go dragon boating. The weather was fantastic and we enjoyed having some water-based fun with our friends..
Year 6
During the final half term, the year 6 students were delighted to present Shrek the Musical.
They worked tirelessly to learn their lines, stage directions, dances and songs. Everyone put on an incredible performance. What a memorable show it was!
Sports Day
All the students managed to hop, skip and jump their way through a successful sports day.
We saw teamwork, resilience and determination, as well as lots of fun and laughter.
Thank you to Mrs Moran and the staff from Sports UK for organising such an enjoyable day.
E-Safety Day
On Monday 15th July, students consolidated their understanding of esafety and the impact this can have on people through a variety of planned activities.
Across the year groups, students created a variety of work such as posters and chatterbox to remind others how to keep safe online.
Year 5 participated in an interesting debate about the pros and cons of social media.
Year 3 learnt about cyber bullying and the importance of friendships. They roleplayed about how to be kind and respectful online and understanding the difference between what is respectful and inappropriate to say online.
A Banquet of Words
This term we have launched our latest anthology of creative writing. Children from Years 4, 5 and 6 took part in our launch of creative writing and art. The launch was led by our writer and artist in residence, Nik Perring and Chris Mould. The children performed poetry from the anthology . Well done to Keegan and Sophia whose work was chosen to be displayed on pop up banners .
Children from year 4 talked about their sessions with Chris Mould, learning about watercolour techniques. Year 5 children performed their short stories inspired by their trip to the Bronte Parsonage Museum.
