Appleton Partners LLP - was established by Marc Appleton in 1976, and has offices in Santa Monica and Santa Barbara, California.

We have designed over 850 projects and specialize in the planning, design, and landscaping of custom residential, institutional, and commercial projects for both private and public clients. The location, environment, and siting of each project strongly influence this process, and a harmonious relationship between buildings and landscape is always an essential concern. Whether contemporary or traditional in style, our architecture strives for an appreciation of place and time.

The Studio

In January 1947, the firm Edwards and Wade hired to add medical offices, a laboratory and exam rooms for Doctors C. Hollister and C Campbell, pediatricians. Eric Smith was the builder. Later it was used as a realty company and in the 1980's, the open garage was converted into office space.

In 2019, Appleton Partners purchased and restored the structure. The studio is newly renovated and houses Appleton architects, draftsmen and designers. The building is on the City of Santa Barbara Potential Historic Resources List.

Marc Appleton Library

In 1936, realtor James D. Crawford hired architects Winsor Soule and John Frederick Murphey to design a Spanish Colonial Revival building. The building’s most distinguishing feature is its large, engaged Doric columns. The revival motif is carried through in the building’s stucco trim band, terra cotta tile roof, and decorative color tile wainscot which remains unchanged.

The Marc Appleton Library is filled with founder Marc Appleton’s favorite design, art and travel books collected over a forty-year period. In addition to Marc’s architectural practice, he has also established Tailwater Press - a publishing venture that showcases his passion for literature.

Whether traditional or contemporary in style, urban or rural, the architecture represents a real diversity, an appreciation of place, and a responsiveness to each client. As William Wurster said, “architecture is for people: the picture frame, and not the picture.” Appleton Partners rejects the idea that a successful design practice needs to be “branded” to have a signature style, or that architecture always has to shout.
