Antique Auction Day 2

Thursday, March 1st 9:00 AM Doors: 8:00 AM Conn Baker Cyclist, Daredevil Circus Performer, and Artist.

Conn Baker was born in 1871 and moved to Columbus as a child. His life took some interesting turns. He held the world record time for a mile on a bicycle. As an 18 year old, his paintings were discovered by an NYC gallery owner who offered him a full scholarship to Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He declined to go, preferring to stay and care for his widowed mother. While looking for a way to earn money to support his family, Conn discovered an account of the death of circus performer, Diavolo, the only man who could Loop the Loop on a bicycle. Baker figured that he could do that trick as well as anyone and wrote to the owners of the circus and told them as much. A first attempt landed him in the hospital with a broken leg and several broken ribs. 2 weeks later he was ready to try again, plaster cast and all. He succeeded and ended up spending the early part of the 20 th century traveling the world in the

Harmston Circus. As was common at the time, he took his predecessor’s professional name of J.C. Carter and his intimidating stage name of “Diavolo.” This death-defying trick had been attempted by over 300 men, with only 2 succeeding. The Loop the Loop was always featured as the grand finale in these shows. While travelling in India, he met the woman who would become his wife, Laura Calvert. She was a dancer with the Tiller girls, a Rockette type precision dance troupe. They documented their travels with articles, photographs, letters, and journals that illustrated their adventures. For nearly a century, Baker’s descendants preserved these treasures. They married and moved back to Conn’s home of Columbus, Ohio. Conn returned to his first love of painting the rural landscapes of central Ohio. He was active in the Pen and Pencil club in Columbus, as well as the Republican Party.
