2011 AMICA MARATHON

WELCOME We are honored to greet the marathon, half marathon and 5k runners competing in this weekend’s event and the thousands of visitors from across the country who are here to support them. All of you represent a remarkable range of athletes. As you pound the pavement and put one foot in front of the other in the pursuit of individual bests, Amica applauds you all! Our decision to sponsor this special event was two-fold: to have a world-class marathon event in Rhode Island and to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House in Providence. Again, we’re thrilled to be here cheering you on. Robert A. DiMuccio Chairman, President and CEO Amica Mutual Insurance Company

Have a great run!

2011 AMICA MARATHON

FACES IN THE CROWD Every year we ask our runners why they run, and, every year, they never cease to inspire us. - The Amica Marathon Race Team

TEAM DAVE: NATHAN HOBBS At Christmas, Nathan Hobbs’ father-inlaw, Dave, was actively running after his one year-old grandson, Jesse. By Jan. 17, just days after his 60th birthday, Dave was hospitalized and nearly paralyzed from the waist down. He underwent major spinal surgery and it was discovered Dave had a rare spinal tumor, a Gliobastoma Multiforme. It was a shock for the whole family. He was confined to a wheelchair and lost his battle when he passed away in June.

“Dave was an amazing man who has inspired people around the world through his work and friendships. He moved many to be empowered in their lives, to live fully, to accept and appreciate differences and to always demonstrate compassion,” Nathan said. “Dave lived an adventurous and active life. He ran 12 marathons (with a personal best of 2:37),” said Nathan, who resides in Boulder, CO. “I have decided to honor Dave, his fight and his accomplishments by running the Amica Marathon.” Judith Maruca, Dave’s sister, is looking forward to running 26.2 miles to honor her brother. “Dave was a kind and generous man who loved life. We will all run with laughter and sadness both as we remember a beautiful man,” said Judy.

12

NIFTY 50: BILL AND BRIDGET MOELLER “Upon completion of the Amica Marathon, my wife Bridget and I will have completed a marathon in all 50 states. It has taken us on a 10-year journey, where we have each run more than 100 marathons. “I was sidetracked for several months while recovering from kidney cancer in 2005, but I was not going to let that steal my happiness. Running helped me overcome that obstacle. “Bridget and I have enjoyed experiencing beautiful scenery on many runs and meeting fun people. We’ve been married almost 30 years and enjoy our marathon adventures together.”

2011 AMICA MARATHON

FACES RUNNING FOR DAD: SENTHILKUMAR KANNAIYAN “I am participating in this event because of my father, who passed away four years ago. From my childhood, his ambition and primary goal was to bring me up as a good athlete, and I did my high school in YMCA sports hostel in Chennai, India. I participated in couple of annual athletic events and did reasonably well. After my high school, I was unable to spend more time on workouts and practice due to my formal education. I did my bachelor’s degree and completed my master’s in computers. “Now my father is no more, and I miss him so much. I wanted to participate and run this event on behalf of his memory. I am proud and happy about that. I just want to say “I LOVE YOU, DAD and MISS YOU A LOT. I will run this event for you, whatever happens.”

A BIG HEART: CAITLIN O’CONNOR Caitlin is running the UnitedHealthcare Half Marathon in memory of her father, Patrick O’Connor. In doing so, she will be raising money for the American Heart Association’s Power to End Stroke initiative.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY: PAT WALSH “On October 16, I will be celebrating 10 years cancer-free by running my first half marathon. I was diagnosed with breast cancer October 10, 2001. My biggest

marathon number 51 at the Mount Desert Island Marathon where her dad grew up in Maine.

challenge is running with emphysema. My pace is “turtle slow”, and I don’t plan on breaking any records. My goal is to finish in under three and a-half hours. This will be my biggest challenge so far. “I walked a full marathon in Alaska to celebrate my 65th birthday in 2009, and now I am ready to take it to the next level in Newport.”

PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH: CHRIS BOIE “I volunteer with a non-profit called SLTP - The Student Leadership Training Program (http://www.sltp.info/), where we teach students goal setting. I am practicing what I preach. I am setting my sights high. I am trying my best to accomplish something BIG by running a marathon. I am also raising money for the group at http://www.active.com/donate/ChrisRuns26MilesSLTP. “I am doing well, having a few minor setbacks, but not really doing too bad. I teach, so the start of the school year has reduced my sleep, but, otherwise, I am on track (I hope).”

50 IN 50: ELIZABETH TRASK Elizabeth is running 50-plus marathons in 50 states to raise money and awareness for the Center for Grieving Children in Portland, ME. She is attempting this lofty goal in memory of her dad, William Mason Trask, who passed away suddenly in 2006 at age 51. The Amica Marathon is among the many races she will compete in towards her goal. She hopes to complete

13

“This will not be a competitive journey,” Elizabeth said. “I will not have set goal times for each marathon, instead I want to inspire others along the marathon courses to continue to run and to remember why they run. I hope to encourage others to take a proactive approach to coping with the loss of a loved one. At the end of my journey, I would like to write a book and donate the proceeds to the Center for Grieving Children in Portland, Maine.”

BIGGEST LOSER: MARK KRUGER Season 5 Biggest Loser contestant Mark Kruger lost 129 pounds and was the runner-up when he competed on the NBC show in 2008. His participation on the show has long-since ended, but his goal of living a healthy lifestyle and keeping his weight off remains a big part of his life. In 2011, Mark has completed numerous running events, including a 100-mile race, three full marathons and two 50ks. In all, he has run more than 1,600 miles ths year.

2011 AMICA MARATHON

FACES 26.2 AND THEN “I DO”: GERALYN HOFFMAN & LARRY DUCADY

LIFESTYLE CHANGE: JASON PINA “At one time in my life, I weighed 370 pounds. Through diet and exercise I have dropped 145 pounds. One of my life goals was to run a marathon by 40. I still hope to do one by May, 2012. At the start of the summer, I received a Groupon email about the UnitedHealthcare Half Marathon at the Amica Marathon. I bought it and started running the next day. I found a reasonable training program and put in about 20 miles each week.

missing something. Thus we registered for the UnitedHealthcare Half Marathon at the Amica Marathon in Newport. I can’t think of a better or more beautiful race to run for our first official half marathon.”

“I am looking forward to running my first half marathon and, one day, reaching my goal of running 26.2 miles!”

RUNNING BUDDIES: JOYCE SAVIO & VIVIAN SAUNDERS “Shortly after I ran my very first 5k with Larry, I received a flyer in the mail promoting Team in Training. I had two childhood friends who died from leukemia and nonHodgkins lymphoma. We had talked about running longer distances and I thought Team in Training was a perfect fit to help us reach our goal. “Larry and I started training for our first full marathon in January 2010 and raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Our first marathon was the San Diego Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in June of 2010. I became hooked on running and signed up for other races that year, including the UnitedHealthcare Half Marathon the Amica Marathon. Larry and I joined Team in Training again this year to raise money and train for the Cox Sports Marathon at the Cox Providence Rhode Races. “We decided, ‘What better way to celebrate our marriage than to exchange vows at the end of the Amica Marathon.’ So we will run 26.2 miles together at the Amica Marathon’ and get married after we cross the finish line. We have asked our wedding guests to donate to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in lieu of gifts. Our gift is the gift to help others.”

“A few years ago I decided to once and for all start exercising and eating right. I started walking. I found a buddy, Vivian, to walk with, and would keep accountable. About a year into our walking, we signed up for a 5k. Vivian came in second and I came in third in my ago group. That ignited us to run three times a week and

SUPER SENIOR: LYNN EDWARDS At 88 years old, this super senior is the eldest participant in the 2011 Amica Marathon. She began her running career at age 55. She competed in her first Ironman triathlon at age 69 and won her age group competing in that event the following year in Hawaii.

set our sights on attempting our first half marathon. We found a good schedule for rookie marathon runners and stuck to it and met with a running coach who gave us some great tips which we incorporated into our training. “We registered to run in a half marathon in April of 2011. Unfortunately, more than three miles of that route was flooded, so we only ran 9.55 miles. We felt like we were

14

Despite suffering from ovarian cancer a few years ago, she continues to remain active and lace up her running shoes every chance she gets. Her current goal is to run a marathon in all 50 states. “Participating in these races helps me physically feel much better,” said Lynn, who is currently writing a book right now about being motivated and staying active.

2011 AMICA MARATHON

FACES with a guy who had completed the 50 states. While it sounded like an incredible challenge, I decided to go for it. The only state that is left is Rhode Island. “I am very excited about reaching the finish of this journey. It has been a lot of travel, and a lot of expense, but this is a great country, and I am glad I have gotten to visit every state. I try to do more than simply run a marathon when I travel to the state, and usually get to the state capital and one of the state universities so that I can say that I have a pretty good idea of what the state is like.”

and motivated me to become healthier • My father, Russell, who, as a great example to those around him, exhibited tremendous discipline and commitment (he passed in 2007) • My mother, Elise, who is very sick with cancer, but is optimistic and good-natured in spite of it all • My youngest sister, Anne, who has survived cancer and, in so doing, has shown guts and the same kind of optimism as my Mom • My two sons, Matthew and Ryan, who, hopefully, will see my running as an example of being able to do whatever you set your mind to and work hard for.

HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE: DELORES DUPRAS “In October 2010 I started a weight loss competition that ignited my slow descent on the scale. To date, I have lost 25 percent of my original weight.

STRIDES FOR ST. JUDE’S: JOHN KINNICUTT “I am attempting to run a marathon during each calendar month of 2011. In the process I am raising money for St. Jude’s and thus finishing my marathon quest with the St. Jude Memphis Marathon in December. My daughter turned 18 this year - technically no longer a child. While I’ve never needed to use St. Jude’s Hospital, I always felt a little better just knowing that it was there. “So, if all continues as planned, I will run the Amica Marathon, the San Antonio Marathon in November and finish, finally, at the St. Jude Marathon in December. To date, I’ve raised several thousand dollars for St. Jude’s Hospital.”

49 DOWN: BOB HILL “I started running 32 years ago with a goal of running a marathon. When I accomplished that, I wanted to run the Boston Marathon. It took me 20 years to finally qualify, and I ran Boston in 2005. I felt like I needed another goal, and I had run

“A combination of diet and exercise are the key to my success. Running has been my motivation. “I began running in January and completed a 5k in March, the first of several 3.1 mile races I have now conquered. “As summer approached, I set my sights on a longer distance race and will run my first half marathon at the Amica Marathon.”

BUSY MOM: KAMA WEIM The mother of four kids under the age of seven, Kama said running is a great reflective escape. “I really appreciate the time to think about my life and all of my blessings,” she said.

FOR LOVED ONES: CURT PALMER “I am running as part of my commitment to living a healthy lifestyle and also to honor special people in my life.” • My wife, Ellen, who both encouraged
