Spotlight on the circular economy Circular economy refers to a regenerative system which includes traditional recycling. But it goes much further than that. This strategy promotes using less raw materials and energy and encourages long-lasting design, repair and reuse. It is a driver for a modernised, environmentally friendly economy and can create jobs and boost competitiveness and economic growth by focusing on product cycles that are in harmony with the environment. The European Commission has adopted an ambitious circular economy strategy covering production, consumption, waste management and use of secondary raw materials. In its meeting on 16 January, the Commission reviewed its circular economy package, which includes a strategy on plastics use, reuse and recycling and an overview of progress made so far. The publications presented below provide further insight and illustrate the EU’s activities in making the circular economy better known as a viable future for citizens and businesses.

Bioplastics Sustainable materials for building a strong and circular European bioeconomy Bioplastics are becoming a crucial component in the drive to create a fully sustainable and circular bioeconomy. The EU has been actively supporting the development of these materials through ambitious and collaborative research. Encompassing a whole family of materials with different properties and applications, bioplastics can be made from renewable resources such as crops and wood. This CORDIS Results Pack highlights the results of eight innovative projects that have benefited from EU funding.

The EIB in the circular economy Promoting a circular economy is high on the EU policy agenda.The European Investment Bank (EIB) is a major partner in this and has provided about EUR 2.4 billion in co-financing for circular economy projects over the last 5 years. The lending needs and potential of the circular economy are clearly much greater. The EIB is ready to continue supporting the EU transition towards a circular economy.

This publication showcases the Juncker Commission’s contribution to the One Planet Summit that took place in Paris on 12 December 2017. As Jean-Claude Juncker said on the occasion, ‘We would need at least four planets to maintain our present way of life, production and consumption. But we only have one. So now is the time for us all to come together and act for our planet. Tomorrow will be too late.’

Sustainable urban mobility European policy, practice and solutions In the EU, around 75 % of all citizens live in urban areas, and the tendency is rising. Such a large degree of urbanisation requires a consistent approach towards mobility. Transport is essential to economic growth and welfare as well as to the quality of life in urban areas, but congestion, air pollution, safety and noise pollution are examples of commonly shared problems in European cities. This report outlines how the EU works towards sustainable urban mobility.

Protection and controls of geographical indications for agricultural products in the EU Member States This publication provides insight into the control and protection systems for geographical indications in the 28 EU Member States. It describes each national control system for foodstuffs and agricultural products, wines, spirits and aromatised wine-based drinks. It also explains the procedures in place, including enforcement measures against infringements, and who the competent authorities are.
