One such accomplishment is the groundbreaking for our new Health Professions Building, a 114,000-square-foot state-ofthe-art facility that will revolutionize health care education. Funded by the Tennessee General Assembly with support from the Clarksville-Montgomery County Community Health Foundation, this transformative project is expected to be completed by July 2025. We also celebrated the fifth anniversary of the Southeastern Grasslands Institute, which underscores our commitment to preserving endangered grasslands in the Southeast. Our teacher apprenticeship program, Grow Your Own, gained recognition from the White House and The Washington Post as a crucial solution to the nationwide teacher shortage. The program offers aspiring teachers an accelerated pathway to college tuition-free while working as paid educational assistants. This innovative approach to training teachers shows our commitment to shaping the future of education and providing opportunities for those who may not otherwise have them. By proudly launching the Institute for National Security and Military Studies, the first in the Southeast, we demonstrated our dedication to understanding national security and military issues. This prestigious institute offers a comprehensive bachelor’s degree in national security studies, conducts vital research and fosters collaboration with the armed forces. The institute shows our continued commitment to a strong relationship with the military. We also continue to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students and faculty. Our commitment to academic excellence is showcased in many ways, from prestigious scholarships to groundbreaking research. We promote scientific literacy through events like “Science on Tap,” and our alumni continue to make us proud with contributions across a wide variety of fields. Taking our story on the road, we engaged with alumni, parents and future students throughout Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, Florida, North Carolina and Texas, sharing what it means to “Be A Gov.” Our men’s and women’s basketball programs now thrive at the state-of-the-art F&M Bank Arena in downtown Clarksville, a vibrant center for sports and entertainment. Our defending conference championship football team, and our other athletics programs, create unforgettable experiences for our student-athletes and fans. These achievements demonstrate our impact on the world and the values we cherish. CoB revamps Kimbrough Building ahead of MBA program launch APSU’s College of Business underwent extensive renovations this summer as part of a $9 million investment secured through state and private funding in 2022. The project updated a significant portion of the Kimbrough Building to enhance the campus experience as the University prepares to launch its Master of Business Administration (MBA) program in Fall 2024. Clarksville is currently Tennessee’s only major city without an MBA program and will benefit significantly from the addition. APSU’s program will offer multiple concentrations tailored to local needs while allowing residents to pursue career advancement close to home.
APSU adds University College, names Dr. Loretta Griffy as dean Dr. Loretta Griffy, Austin Peay’s former associate vice president for academic strategic initiatives and foundation engagement, has been named the inaugural dean of APSU’s University College, which launched Aug. 1. The University College is designed to house areas within Austin Peay that are outside of an academic college and help students transition into higher education. Griffy said the university college concept directly supports APSU’s strategic plan and has a proven impact at other universities.
Dr. Leonard Clemons named VP for Student Affairs Dr. Leonard E. Clemons, former associate vice provost for student success at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, became APSU’s new vice president of student affairs on July 10. Clemons has over 10 years of experience within student affairs structures and a proven track record of improving retention and graduation rates. He is also a member of multiple national academic associations and has delivered several regional presentations on student success strategies.

Graduating seniors receive Drane and Harvill Awards Two graduating seniors from the Class of 2023 – mathematics major Mackenzie Carr and education major Susan Conner – recently earned the University’s most prestigious student accolades during the APSU Student Organization and Leader Awards. Carr received the William McClure Drane Award, while Conner won the Harvill-Civitan Citizenship Award. Recipients of both awards are chosen annually by a panel of faculty members and selected staff.
Engineering physics major lands NASA internship Ethan Moss, an engineering physics major at APSU, has been selected to join the Pathways Internship Program at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The program is an intensive cooperative internship that spans three nonconsecutive semesters, and Moss will begin his first work tour this fall. He aims to apply for NASA’s astronaut program after completing his master’s degree and said he is excited to gain valuable experience during his internship.

APSU’s Grow Your Own Teacher Residency featured in The Washington Post Lina Horton, an APSU alumna and second grade teacher at Byrns Darden Elementary School, recently spoke to The Washington Post about her experience with the University’s Grow Your Own Teacher Residency. As the nation’s first registered teacher apprenticeship program, Grow Your Own allows aspiring teachers to attend college tuition-free while working in paid positions as educational assistants in the ClarksvilleMontgomery County School System. Since its inception in 2019, several states have adopted similar programs.
Retired Maj. Gen. Walt Lord tapped to lead new Military and Veterans Affairs Division APSU recently established the Military and Veterans Affairs Division to unify its military-affiliated student efforts, along with a new vice president position to lead the organization. Retired Army Maj. Gen. Walt Lord, who previously served as APSU’s military adviser in residence, was selected to take on the role. The Military and Veterans Affairs Division will oversee the Newton Military Family Resource Center, the APSU Center at Fort Campbell and the University’s military-focused recruitment and marketing efforts. ernadette John, a graduate student who recently earned her master’s degree in music performance from APSU, is the second student in University history to win a Fulbright U.S. Student Program fellowship.
“This is a new frontier,” she said. “I know of only two clarinetists who are doing this, and Dr. Roe is one. He’s experimenting with playing Irish traditional music, and this is not something clarinet players are doing, so it’s a whole new world.”
The widely recognized and prestigious award will send her to the Royal Irish Academy of Music to work with Dr. Paul Roe, professor of clarinet at the academy and one of Ireland’s most creative and versatile musicians.
John’s goal is to create a space for the two genres to interact authentically and open contemporary clarinet performances to larger audiences.
John will head to Ireland during the 2023-24 academic year to explore the liminal space between the established classical tradition and its interaction with Irish traditional music. Her work will focus on using the clarinet, her primary instrument, to examine this space.
“She could well be at the forefront of a major event in folk cultural music in this country,” said Dr. Tim Winters, director of APSU’s Honors Program, who helped John with her Fulbright application. “She’s doing something that’s really going to make a significant change and open up this music to audiences in ways that it has not been open before.”

uriy Holovchak, a sophomore double majoring in engineering physics and computer science, recently became the first APSU student to receive the Barry Goldwater Scholarship since 2013. He was among 410 students nationwide to receive the award, out of an estimated pool of over 5,000 college sophomores and juniors. His win marks the fifth time an APSU student has earned the Goldwater Scholarship, which is the preeminent undergraduate award within STEM fields. “Because I got the scholarship, I believe that lots of windows opened up for me, especially in graduate school,” Holovchak said. “But right now, I think the Goldwater Scholarship is something that will drive me to try and get more scholarships in the future.”

Holovchak wants to pursue a career in materials research, and his goal is to earn a doctorate in physics. He hopes to conduct research in quantum information science and materials development at national labs, and aspires to create a company dealing with quantum computing technology. “I’m trying to get myself to be better at research as a whole, to be able to create different experimental setups to measure the stuff I want and develop new materials and devices,” he said. “As long as I’m able to do that, I think I’ll be successful in my undergraduate career. I’m hoping I can continue this into my professional career.”

The fellowships match host universities with Africanborn scholars, covering expenses for project visits between 14 and 90 days. Chaparadza will travel to South Africa to work with Dr. Caliphs Zvinowanda at the University of Johannesburg.
The technology used in the project will allow for the monitoring of pollutants over time without the need for animal models. It is expected to have significant implications on the understanding of preventing antimicrobial resistance and could provide valuable data on the importance of reducing pollution in surface waters.

Their project will focus on the prevalence of antibiotics and their metabolites in surface waters after the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Chaparadza, antibiotic prescriptions spiked during the pandemic, particularly in the Johannesburg area. “The prevalence of antimicrobial use in South Africa is almost three times more than other BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) countries like

BRIGHTER TER FUTURE URE APSU breaks ground on cutting-edge

ustin Peay State University is committed to providing transformational experiences for its students, who will soon be taking on practical learning opportunities in a state-of-the-art new Health Professions Building. The University recently hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the 114,000-square-foot facility, which is located on Eighth Street and projected for completion in July 2025. It will allow APSU to consolidate its growing healthcare-related programs: nursing; allied health sciences; health and human performance; psychological science and counseling; and social work. “This new facility will not only transform our campus – both physically and academically – it will improve public health for our neighbors, friends and family,” said Dr. Mike Licari, APSU president. “Students will collaborate with others in different fields, making them better healthcare professionals, and the building will provide important public clinical space to serve different populations, including veterans and low-income citizens.” The building will also feature research labs, active learning classrooms and collaborative learning spaces. Dr. Nicole Knickmeyer, chair of APSU’s Department of Psychological Science and Counseling, said it will shape how the University trains future healthcare professionals. “An example of this is the planned training clinic that will operate within the new building,” she said. “This clinic will allow APSU to meet a great need in the community by providing a range of healthcare services to community residents. [Students from several programs] will have an opportunity to develop interprofessional skills alongside those of their respective disciplines.” AUSTIN P EAY | 11

The state required APSU to raise at least $1.28 million before it would consider approving the project. As a result, the Clarksville-Montgomery County Community Health Foundation (CMCCHF) committed $3 million to the Austin Peay State University Foundation to establish the CMC Community Health Foundation Equipment & Building Fund in November 2020.
“I am very pleased with the decision to provide these funds to further the expertise and options for those who choose to work in healthcare,” he said. “This investment is a valuable and crucial step in the future of our growing community, and one that will have a positive long-term impact for Clarksville-Montgomery County.”
“The Health Professions Building at APSU is exactly the kind of project that the Community Health Foundation was set up to support,” Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts said. “It’s a great use of these resources to improve our future health education and health outcomes across the entire Clarksville-Montgomery County community.”
Following the CMCCHF’s gift, the Tennessee General Assembly approved funding for the Health Professions Building as part of the state’s 2021-22 annual budget and provided additional funding in their 2023 session to meet increased construction costs generated by inflation and supply chain issues.
Former Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett, who was serving his second term in office when the Health Professions Building was announced, said he was excited to see an investment in the county’s future healthcare professionals. 12 | FA L L 2023
Licari said State Reps. Curtis Johnson, Jay Reedy, Jeff Burkhart and Ronnie Glynn, State Sen. Bill Powers and former State Rep. Jason Hodges were instrumental in supporting the project throughout the budgeting process.
Nashville-based Hastings Architecture and the Maryland design firm Ayers Saint Gross released initial conceptual renderings for the facility in 2022, featuring a distinctive glass and brick motif. “What they provided is not the final design for this project, but the Health Professions Building should look very similar to these images,” said Marc Brunner, APSU’s director of Capital Planning, Design and Construction. Messer Construction, a Nashville-based contractor, is currently working to bring those images to life – and the University looks forward to using the building to provide foundational experiences for a generation of students.
“The new Health Professions Building provides a safe and modern space to prepare our medical laboratory science students for today’s in-demand, high-paying clinical laboratory jobs,” said Dr. Perry Scanlan, chair of APSU’s Department of Allied Health Sciences. “This well-equipped, state-of-the-art medical learning facility uses modern techniques and instrumentation to learn the clinical skills required to diagnose and treat patients … our students, faculty and staff are thrilled to have a new place to call home that provides so many opportunities for learning, growth and stateof-the-art laboratory simulations.”

Lost Austin Peay class ring comes home after 45 years in Kansas City
“It’s kind of an indescribable feeling!”
E
vangelist Don Mathis was the first in his family to graduate from college, and he said Austin Peay State University’s welcoming atmosphere made it possible – so his 1966 class ring became a cherished memento until he lost it in the 1970s. Forty-five years later, Mike DeVries of Liberty, Missouri unearthed the ring in Kansas City using a metal detector and was able to trace it back to its owner, who received it by mail on March 20. “It’s kind of an indescribable feeling,” Mathis said. “My wife accused me of being a kid waiting for Christmas, because day by day I’d go to the mailbox to see if it had gotten here. I was really excited when I got it … the ring no longer fits my finger, but it still lives in my heart.” 14 | FA L L 2023
DeVries said he and a friend were metal detecting in a park on March 4 when he came across the ring, which sent him on an unexpected journey. “I have a Facebook group of metal detecting enthusiasts and I posted it on there,” he said. “We always post the grams and how much it weighs, and the melt value of the ring was nearly $500 so it’s a lot of gold.” One of the group members had access to a yearbook database through Ancestry, and she used it to identify Mathis based on the ring’s inscribed initials and graduation year. From there, DeVries found Mathis’s ministry website, email address and Facebook account and reached out.
“You get all kinds of messages as you check your email,” Mathis said, noting that he was suspicious at first. “I didn’t want to surrender any information, so I simply emailed him back with two one-word questions: ‘school?’ and ‘year?’ He emailed me back and said ‘Austin Peay State College, 1966, initials DRM.’ I knew immediately, and a cold chill ran up and down my back.” A few photos of the ring confirmed it was Mathis’s long-lost keepsake, and he asked to have it mailed to his home in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
“I could just tell he was super excited that the ring had been found,” DeVries said. “He didn’t remember exactly how he lost it, and as we went back and forth on emails, I told him how I found it. When I heard how excited he was, that made me feel just as excited to be able to send it back to him.” Mathis’s conversations with DeVries also helped him solve the mystery of how he lost the ring to begin with. “I assumed for many years that I lost it in Kentucky, because I was trying to learn how to water ski at Barkley Lake with a bunch of buddies,” Mathis said. “They said I could fall more ways than anybody they ever saw, and I figured I had the ring on my hand and it fell in the lake.”
“I usually wore my Austin Peay ring, which tells you something because by then I’d finished a master’s and doctorate at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary,” Mathis said. “I was probably walking to the convention center with the Austin Peay ring on my finger and the seminary ring in my pocket, and I guess I thought if I’m going to a Southern Baptist Convention I ought to put my seminary ring on. Apparently, I missed my pocket, and that’s how it wound up in Kansas City.” Seeing the ring again brought back memories of Mathis’s time at Austin Peay State College, where he
arrived in 1963 as a transfer student from Murray State University. He originally planned to be a math teacher, but his academic adviser encouraged him to pursue a business degree based on his credit hours. Mathis said that decision paid off by affording him unique opportunities in his career as a preacher, and it also connected him with Austin Peay professors who inspired him to succeed and apply himself to his studies. “When I got to Austin Peay I was on academic probation, but they seemed to want me,” he said. “They took me on the basis that if I could do the work I could go from there, and by the time I graduated I actually made the presidential list, the honor roll.”
Although Mathis had spent plenty of time at Barkley Lake, he only traveled to Kansas City once – to attend a Southern Baptist Convention event in 1977.

From conservation to education, the University shines bright Austin Peay State University has had an exceptional year, filled with notable accomplishments that have garnered attention from the local community, the nation and even the world. Over the past year, the University has achieved several significant milestones, demonstrating its commitment to creating an inclusive environment for students to learn and positively impact the world, locally and globally. “We are proud of the exceptional talent developed at Austin Peay,” said APSU President Mike Licari. “Our achievement reflects our commitment to providing quality, accessible education. We remain committed to excellence and our students’ positive impact on the world.” These are just a few of the significant milestones from the past year.
Creating a national impact Last October, the Southeastern Grasslands Institute marked its fifth anniversary, reaffirming its dedication to conserving endangered grasslands across the Southeast. These grasslands are home to threatened species such as monarch butterflies, American bumblebees and northern bobwhites. The institute’s conservation efforts offer hope for preserving these fragile ecosystems and the wildlife they provide sustenance to. APSU’s Grow Your Own Teacher Residency has gained national attention, with the White House recognizing it as a critical solution to the country’s teacher shortage. Developed in partnership with the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System, the program provides aspiring teachers a tuitionfree college path while allowing them to earn wages as educational assistants. Its success inspired other states to adopt similar programs, providing qualified educators and reforming the future of education. Last spring, The

Supporting those who serve Last fall, Austin Peay became Tennessee’s only university to offer in-state tuition rates to all militaryaffiliated students, setting a shining example of support for our nation’s protectors. This commitment to those in service - including veterans, reservists, National Guard members and their families demonstrates APSU’s resolve to make education accessible and affordable. APSU also launched the Institute for National Security and Military Studies - the first in the Southeast reinforcing its commitment to national defense and military issues. This institute offers a bachelor’s degree in national security studies, researches military-related topics and encourages cooperation between Tennessee and the armed forces. It also caters to military and veteran students, helping them to excel and augment workforce development in this vital field.
Celebrating individual triumphs Austin Peay’s students and faculty exemplify academic excellence through impressive national scholarships and grants. Graduate student Bernadette John secured a Fulbright fellowship to study the intersection of classical and Irish traditional music in Ireland. Sophomore Yuriy Holovchak earned a Barry Goldwater Scholarship, becoming the first APSU student to do so since 2013. Chemistry professor Dr. Allen Chaparadza won the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship for the second time for research on water pollution and antibiotic resistance in South Africa.
Austin Peay alums have also had great success, making significant contributions to their fields. Kaylie Fairclough, an architectural illustrator, was featured in The New York Times for her work illustrating the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Courtney Gatewood, an art and design major, had her artwork showcased in a digital exhibition in Times Square and was recognized by multiple renowned publications.
Fortifying an indomitable spirit Austin Peay visited alumni, parents and potential students in Tennessee, Alabama and Texas during the spring. One stop included Huntsville, Alabama, where APSU scientists presented “Science on Tap” to a packed house. The event examined the scientific accuracy of “Jurassic Park” and showed the University’s commitment to promoting technical literacy and critical thinking within the community. Representing Austin Peay’s indomitable spirit, the University’s ROTC Ranger Challenge team stood tall among prestigious competitors from West Point, military service academies and international participants at the esteemed Sandhurst Military Skills Competition in New York. The team’s remarkable physical and mental prowess illuminated APSU’s unwavering commitment to preparing future military leaders who will shape the course of our nation’s security.

Connecting with our community Last fall, Austin Peay partnered with Two Heads Hot Sauce to launch two new hot sauces: Stacheville Sting and Govs Valiant Verde. Both emphasize Tennesseesourced ingredients and quality while also supporting charitable causes. Collaborations like these provide an enjoyable way for alums and supporters to connect and celebrate the spirit of Austin Peay. Austin Peay University continues to make an impact, transforming communities locally and globally with its commitment to academic excellence, student experiences and community partnerships. A New Era for Clarksville: F&M Bank Arena’s grand opening In the heart of Clarksville, a new era has dawned with the grand opening of the F&M Bank Arena. This state-of-the-art facility, a decade in the making, is set to transform the city into a premier live entertainment destination. The grand opening celebration, held on a sunny Saturday in July, was a spectacle. More than 4,000 residents and visitors flocked to the arena, eager to witness the unveiling of this long-awaited venue. The day was filled with festivities, from arena tours and public skating to meet-and-greets with Austin Peay State University players. “This event isn’t just about a venue - it’s a highly anticipated celebration that will reverberate throughout our community,” said SS&E Vice President & General Manager Danny Butler. His excitement was palpable as he spoke about the impact the arena is set to have on downtown Clarksville. The F&M Bank Arena is more than just a building; it’s a testament to the power of collaboration and vision. The project was a joint effort between the Nashville Predators, Montgomery County, former county Mayor Jim Durrett, APSU and local business F&M Bank. Together, they navigated a sea of ideas, eventually settling on an arena with a fullsized ice rink. “We really wanted to impact downtown Clarksville,” Butler said. “And with the area growing and big business coming here, it’s an area that needs entertainment.” The arena will be the home for the Governors’ men’s and women’s basketball programs starting in 2023, bringing the student body and Austin Peay fanbase to downtown Clarksville.

“The hope is to tie things into the campus to bring some excitement,” Butler added. At the grand opening, F&M Bank President and CEO Sammy Stuard echoed this sentiment. “This has been a journey that has come to an end, but it’s the start of a new journey with what this new arena is going to mean to Clarksville, Tennessee and all of the surrounding area,” Stuard said. Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts, Montgomery County Mayor Wes Golden and President and CEO of the Nashville Predators Sean Henry also spoke at the event, expressing their excitement and anticipation for the arena’s impact on the community. The F&M Bank Arena is not just for Clarksville, but for all the surrounding communities. “It’s going to be an entertainment center second to none, and F&M Bank is proud to be a part of it,” Stuard said. As the ribbon was cut and the doors officially opened, the buzz of excitement was palpable. APSU promotes grassland restoration through
live small mammal trapping
Dunbar Cave State Park’s restored prairie is home to various animal species, and students, faculty and staff from Austin Peay State University are gathering valuable information about them through live small mammal trapping. Dr. Catherine Haase, assistant professor in the Department of Biology, said the trapping is part of an ongoing study on how different species have responded to native grassland restoration efforts in the Clarksville area. “We’ll be using the data long-term to look at population trends of small mammals, as well as their response to restoration,” she said. “But the main driver for me is that it benefits our students. We need them to be out there getting different types of hands-on and data collection experience, and having the opportunity for small mammal trapping means that any time someone’s interested in that, I can send them out.” Seventeen students from assistant professor Dr. Evan Rehm’s ecology class were given that opportunity on March 22, and they spent the morning checking small box traps and recording data. They also learned how to handle live animals with the proper permits and supervision. “I want the students to get excited about ecology, and oftentimes the hands-on experience is worth so much more than time in the classroom,” Rehm said. “To come out and use the same techniques that professionals use for long-term data management and monitoring ties in nicely with what we’re learning.” Haase said the department uses Sherman box-style traps baited with oat and peanut butter treats to attract small mammals. Wildlife technicians open the traps five 20 | FA L L 2023
evenings a week before returning the following day to check them and record data. Each animal is weighed, tagged and checked for sex and reproductive conditions, and the information is recorded using data sheets. Haase plans to repeat the process every fall and spring semester over six weeks. “We initially came out here with Dr. Haase and scoped out an area, then came back to set up traps in a grid,” Austin Peay wildlife technician Dakota Van Parys said, noting that the first traps were placed in Fall 2022. “A week before starting trapping, we seeded each location to see if we could attract more mammals than last semester, and we have.” Van Parys said the Sherman traps had captured hispid cotton rats and deer mice. He and fellow wildlife technician Kennedy Beck have also set up multiple bat monitors and motion-activated game cameras to record larger mammals, such as bobcats and foxes, without trapping them. “Deer mice are some of the most common mammals here, and there are two species we tend to see: North American and white-footed,” Haase said. “They can be difficult to tell apart in the field, so having measurements helps us go back and look up which one’s which …
rodents are [also] a great way to learn how to handle animals because they’re pretty hardy, they’re small and they’re not going to hurt you if they bite you.” Haase said being able to handle the rodents also allows researchers to tag them and estimate the total population. One of her goals for small mammal trapping is to build long-term data sets that can answer various research questions. “Doing a single year of trapping doesn’t really give us a lot of information, so we’re establishing a long-term plot here and hoping to trap this and [three] other areas every spring and fall,” she said, adding that game cameras and bat monitors have also been installed at the other locations. The surveyed areas were determined in partnership with the Southeastern Grasslands Institute, a nonprofit organization founded by Austin Peay professor of biology Dr. Dwayne Estes. Each site represents a different conservation stage, allowing researchers to gather more valuable data.

This groundbreaking initiative offers business students at Austin Peay unique opportunities to gain practical experience, networking connections and mentorship within the banking industry. Qualified students from the College of Business will have their expenses covered to attend the Tennessee Bankers Association Southeastern School of Banking while engaging with industry professionals. Legends Bank recently pledged a significant gift to the Austin Peay State University College of Business (COB) Dean’s Fund of Excellence and to establish the Legends Bank Distinguished Professorship in Banking or Finance Endowment, making it the COB’s largest corporate investor to date. The Candlelight Ball is an Austin Peay tradition and a night to celebrate what it means to “Be A Gov!” The 40th anniversary of the Candlelight Ball will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at the Omni Nashville Hotel. This black-tie gala is a fundraiser for annual student scholarships and funds. Established in 1984, the Ball was founded by the late retired Army Brig. Gen. Wendell H. Gilbert to raise scholarship funding for APSU students. Gilbert served as APSU’s Vice President for Development and University Relations for 17 years. This fundraising gala makes a difference in many lives, and the 40th anniversary will be a significant milestone for Austin Peay State University. During the 39th Annual Candlelight Ball, Austin Peay raised a combined $162,500 – surpassing its $100,000 goal and setting a record for the largest fundraising total in the event’s history. Many new traditions, such as “The Gov” bust designed by the innovators at Austin Peay’s GIS Center, were unveiled. By bidding on this one-of-a-kind item, guests directly supported the Candlelight Ball Scholarship Endowment. Other new additions included live auction packages for each academic college and areas such as athletics, military and student affairs, which allowed donors to support students’ needs across the University. Guests can also give any amount to the area of their choice
throughout the night to improve the overall Austin Peay Experience for our Govs. Over time, underwriters and guests at the Candlelight Ball have aided in scholarships and funding for renovations to the Pace Alumni Center at Emerald Hill and resources for the APSU Center for Teaching and Learning. This event offers a meaningful way for community members to give back to APSU, enhancing the Austin Peay Experience for students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends. As the University approaches its 100th anniversary, the Candlelight Ball continues Gilbert’s vision of making a difference in the lives of our students and providing an opportunity for us to impact the Austin Peay Experience for generations to come. Our Candlelight Ball Awards are meant to recognize individuals who have done just that, and they are presented annually to community members who embody APSU’s core values. Outstanding Service Award Suzanne Langford Suzanne Langford is the Middle Tennessee senior market executive of Planters Bank, Inc. and a Clarksville native who graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1983. Suzanne then returned to Clarksville and began her banking career at Commerce Union Bank, now Bank of America. She worked there for 20 years in accounting and later in the Business Banking Group in Middle Tennessee of Bank of America. In 2003, she joined Planters Bank and was subsequently promoted to senior vice president in charge of the Commercial Banking Group in Clarksville, and later became the Middle Tennessee senior market executive. Suzanne is chair of the APSU Foundation Investment Committee. She was formerly chair of the Clarksville-Montgomery County Industrial Development Board and the Clarksville-Montgomery County Economic Development Council. Suzanne has served on the Two Rivers Company Board of Directors and is a current member of the Central Business Improvement District Planning and Development Committee (CBID). She was a past treasurer for the United Way of the Greater Clarksville Region Board of Directors and the Customs House Museum Board of Directors. Suzanne and her husband, Bob, have a history of giving to the APSU College of Business and various APSU scholarships and funds.
James and Dottie Mann
In 2017, APSU alumnus James T. Mann and his wife, Dottie, established the James T. and Dorothy Mann Endowment to benefit the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts (CECA) and the APSU Department of Art + Design. One of their gifts also created the Wall of Legacy in the APSU Art + Design Building. James met Dottie while they were both attending Vanderbilt University. After they graduated and were married, they moved to Columbus, Ohio, where James earned a master’s degree from the Ohio State University Graduate School in 1966. He received his commission in the Army Reserve at Fort Bragg in 1964. While serving on active duty with the Army Security Agency from 1970 to 1971, he was promoted to Captain. He joined the staff of First Federal Bank in 1973, where he later supported Austin Peay in his role as president and CEO. He has received many awards and has been involved in community organizations including the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System (CMCSS) School Board. He was a cofounder of Leadership Clarksville as well as a founding board member of the Clarksville-Montgomery Arts and Heritage Development Council. Dottie joined the Clarksville Tree Board in 1993, serving locally as chairman. The Tree Board has supported APSU in many ways, including the “Plant the Campus Red” service event. Dottie was a founding member of the Woodward Library Society, serving on the Board of Directors as its first president. Dottie later served on The Montgomery County Library Board and as chair of the board during her last term.
Outstanding Young Alumnus/na Dr. Kelvin Rutledge (’12)
Dr. Kelvin Rutledge graduated from Austin Peay State University in 2012 with bachelor’s degrees in sociology and political science, as well as an undergraduate certificate in leadership studies. He received a master’s degree in higher education from Florida State University in 2014 and his doctorate from the same institution in 2021. Professionally, he has been the outreach and engagement graduate assistant and assistant director at the Career Center at Florida State University, the director of experiential programs for the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia and the director of career and professional development at Southern Connecticut State University. Kelvin is currently the associate vice president for institutional inclusive strategies and change management at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, Connecticut. He has taught undergraduate courses and has had several academic works published. Kelvin has also done many in-person and online presentations and workshops on topics relating to higher education. He has earned notable awards, belongs to several professional organizations and has served on numerous committees and boards throughout his career at various universities and professional conferences.
Khari Turner (’19)
Khari Turner is originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He graduated from Austin Peay in May 2019 and went on to attend graduate school at Columbia University. His professional experience includes his Marion Street Residency in 2016 in Clarksville; a Chautauqua, New York Residency in 2019; the Iris Project Residency in Echo Park, California in 2020; the CFHILL Residency in Stockholm, Sweden in 2022 and the 2023 Artists in Residency in the Everglades (AIRIE) in Florida. His work has been featured in many exhibitions and juried shows, and his artwork has been featured on the cover of Austin Peay’s Zone 3 literary journal, Hulu’s 2020 Woke Art Fest, InStyle, Forbes and various other publications. In his paintings, he says he uses water “from oceans, lakes, and rivers from places that have either a historical or personal connection to Black history” and that his work “is constantly evolving, absorbing water and history as a material, painting to bring the stories of elegance and chaos that comes with this existence.”

Outstanding Alumnus/na Carl Henderson (’71) Carl Henderson graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Austin Peay in 1971. Since then, he has given back to the APSU College of Business, the Candlelight Ball and various APSU athletics programs. He has been involved with the APSU Legacy Society and the APSU Foundation. He joined HHM CPAs in 1981 and was made a partner one year later. As a past managing partner for HHM, he has a wealth of experience in multiple services and industries. Currently, he specializes in estate and gift planning for individuals and succession planning for his many corporate clients. As a former revenue agent for the IRS, Carl stays current with his knowledge of tax law changes and brings years of expertise to estate and gift planning. His work in succession planning provides a much-needed service to business clients, advising them on how to create and maintain a talent pipeline for leadership roles. In addition to his duties as a CPA, Carl often serves as an expert witness before the U.S. Tax Court and U.S. Bankruptcy Court, drawing on his past career and current expertise. He is a member of many professional organizations.
Judge Latrice Westbrooks (’94) Court of Appeals Judge Latrice A. Westbrooks earned a bachelor’s degree from Austin Peay State University in 1994. She achieved her juris doctorate from the University of Detroit Mercy Law School. Judge Westbrooks moved to Mississippi and became the first African American woman to be the assistant district attorney in the Second Circuit Court District for the state of Mississippi. She then joined Byrd and Associates as a contributing member. In 2001, she opened her law practice and served as the prosecutor for the city of Durant and the city attorney for the town of Isola. She then worked as a public defender in Holmes County. Her pro bono practice included helping many citizens expunge their criminal records in cooperation with state and local officials, the Magnolia Bar Association, One Voice, the Mississippi NAACP and the Mississippi Center for Justice. She hosted a radio program, “Ask Latrice The Lawyer,” from 2010-12. In 2013, she became interim communications director for the city of Jackson under Mayor Chokwe Lumumba. She then joined the city attorney’s office as the legal counsel for the Jackson Police Department. In 2015, she was appointed as the municipal judge for the city of Lexington until her election to the Mississippi Court of Appeals in 2016. Judge Westbrooks is a member of many professional organizations. She has also served her community through her involvement in many service organizations. She is currently an executive board member for the Humanitarian Organization for Moral Empowerment (H.O.M.E.). Among other honors, Judge Westbrooks was named the Outstanding Woman Lawyer of 2017 by the Mississippi Women Lawyers’ Association, and in 2022, she became a fellow with the Mississippi Bar Foundation, the state bar association’s highest honor.

he Austin Peay State University community honors the late Cathi Maynard, age 65, of Clarksville, who passed away on June 23, 2023. Named Austin Peay’s 2020 Philanthropists of the Year, Cathi Maynard and her husband Joe have given generously to the University since 2017, including naming the Echo Power Club Level of Fortera Stadium and supporting improvements to the baseball field – now named Joe Maynard Field – and the softball park – known as Cathi Maynard Park. Cathi could always be seen with her family at many University and athletics events, and they have been active members of the Clarksville community. In 2020, she and Joe committed a seven-figure gift to create the Joe and Cathi Maynard Fund of Excellence, which has benefited projects such as Women in STEM, the APSU GIS Makerspace, the APSU College of Business 15K Entrepreneurship Challenge, the APSU Food Pantry and Adaptive Student Support. They also have given significant
gifts to create the Dr. Joe E. Maynard, Sr. Education Endowment, the George J. Reed, Sr. Veterans Scholarship Endowment and the JoAnn and Frank Hindsley Veterans Endowment. Over the years, the Maynards assisted a variety of sports and programs in the APSU Department of Athletics. In 2022, they pledged $15 million to name the Joe and Cathi Maynard Athletics Complex on the APSU campus and help secure APSU’s move to the ASUN Conference. President Licari awarded Cathi and Joe the Presidential Medal of Excellence in 2023. Their overall giving to the University totals nearly $19 million, an impressive commitment to student success. Cathi met Joe while in the military. They both served their country, as did several other family members. Cathi and Joe were co-owners of the Top Fuel NHRA Maynard Family Racing Team, CraftPoint Concepts custom millwork and the Trio Hospitality Group at the time of her passing. AUST IN P EAY | 27

APSU BOARD OF TRUSTEES MILITARY SERVICE AWARD BILL HARPEL Bill Harpel is a 1974 graduate of Austin Peay State University. Over the years, he and his twin brother Phil have given back to his alma mater by supporting the Candlelight Ball and scholarships benefiting military-affiliated students. Bill is a past president of the TennesseeKentucky Chapter of the Association of the United States Army, member of the board of directors of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Tennessee-Kentucky Chapter, honorary member of the 101st Airborne Division, Life Club Member of the 101st Airborne Division Association, honorary distinguished member of the 502nd Infantry Regiment and honorary distinguished member of the 527th Infantry Regiment and Department of the Army Commander’s Award for Public Service. Bill is a past chairman of the Clarksville Historical Museum Board of Trustees, past president of the Tennessee Cable Television Association, past chairman of United Way of Montgomery County, past chairman of the Gateway Hospital Board of Trustees, past member of the Clarksville Housing Authority Board of Trustees, volunteer of the year for the Clarksville Area YMCA and past chairman of the Montgomery County District Hospital Board of Trustees. Bill was inducted as a Champion of Fort Campbell in 2010.
APSU BOARD OF TRUSTEES MILITARY SERVICE AWARD PHIL HARPEL Phil Harpel was appointed as the Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for Tennessee North in August 2020. He became the military and government relations coordinator for the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce in October 2018. He was previously acting board chairman for Soldiers and Families Embraced as well as board president and treasurer for the AUSA. He sits on the board of AUSA and also serves as the Community Action Agency Board chairman. He is a charter member, past treasurer and past president of the Clarksville Sunrise Rotary. He is also past campaign chairman, president and treasurer of the United Way of Clarksville and is on the board of directors for Greater Clarksville Region United Way. Professionally, he has been the vice president and community market president for Bank of America, the chief of administration for Montgomery County and the acting vice president and senior community banking officer for U.S. Bank. He is a graduate of Leadership Clarksville-Montgomery County School System, Leadership Clarksville and Leadership Middle Tennessee. His honors include the Department of the Army Public Service Award, Commanders Award for Public Service and the 2010 Champion of Fort Campbell.

He was previously the director of streets for the city of Clarksville, where he served for 20 years. He then served as chief of staff for the city of Clarksville. From 2014 to 2022, he completed two terms as mayor, and in that time, his administration completed several projects that have benefited the local community and Austin Peay State University. In 2017, Montgomery County was one of only seven Army communities worldwide to be recognized in Washington, D.C., with an Army Community Partnership Award. By August 2016, the Durrett administration broke ground for the Downtown Commons, an outdoor gathering space in the heart of Clarksville. In November 2020, the county broke ground on F&M Bank Arena, a state-of-the-art multi-purpose event center located at 101 Main St. in Clarksville. The 250,000-square-foot facility is home to the Austin Peay men’s and women’s basketball teams, and began hosting events for the University and its surrounding communities in July 2023. Over the years, Jim and his wife Mary have personally supported Austin Peay through the Candlelight Ball and various other athletic and academic funds.
APSU PHILANTHROPIST OF THE YEAR GOOGLE LLC Google LLC is an American multinational technology company focusing on online advertising, search engine technology, cloud computing, computer software, quantum computing, e-commerce, artificial intelligence and consumer electronics. In 2018, Google broke ground on its data center near Clarksville, Tennessee. Since becoming part of the local community, the company has made generous contributions to many programs at Austin Peay State University. Google was part of the crisis response for students during the COVID-19 pandemic by providing internet networking systems in seven locations in the region, giving APSU students internet access in parking lots during the national shutdown. Also during the COVID-19 crisis, they provided a generous gift to the APSU Food Pantry in response to food insecurity experienced by students who had recently lost jobs. Google has since partnered with APSU’s Southeastern Grasslands Institute (SGI), a collaboration of leaders in international biodiversity conservation in the APSU College of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) to restore a 50-acre area around the data center to its original biodiversity. In December 2022, Google announced a second phase of this project to extend it an additional 50 acres, allowing SGI to leverage federal grant dollars to help provide research, consultation and education to address the most imperiled ecosystem in eastern North America. Google partnered with the APSU College of STEM to launch the “Innovation Games,” a community event to encourage K-12 STEM education through APSU GIS-supervised drone events. Google has also supported the APSU Center for Rural Education, the Candlelight Ball and various camps and projects hosted by the APSU College of STEM.

CLASS OF 2023 HONOREES Command Sergeant Major (Ret.) Ruben Arriaga (’13) Retired Army Command Sgt. Maj. Ruben Arriaga began his military career in 1996. His first assignment was at Fort Drum, New York, and in 2002 he completed the Special Forces Qualification Course and reported to Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He served in combat during many notable operations and was promoted to sergeant major in 2013. That same year, he graduated from Austin Peay with a degree in health and human performance. After returning from his 10th combat deployment, Arriaga retired from the Army with 25 years of service. He was the vice president of the APSU Military Alumni Chapter from 2014 to 2016.
The Late Colonel (Ret.) Ted Crozier, Sr. (’57) During his time in the U.S. Army, the late retired Col. Ted Crozier Sr. was the first to command what would become the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His command of the 101st Aviation Company was accompanied by many firsts – notably, he was the first aviator to serve as chief of staff of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). In 1957, he graduated from Austin Peay State University with a degree in history. He retired from the Army in 1977 after 32 years of service. In 1978, Crozier was elected mayor of Clarksville, Tennessee and served two terms in office. Crozier passed away in 2017 at the age of 91.
The Late Brigadier General (Ret.) Wendell H. Gilbert The late retired Army Brig. Gen. Wendell H. Gilbert was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and George Washington University. While in the U.S. Army, he served as the chief of staff for the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky and was the assistant division commander for the First Armored Division stationed in Bamberg, Germany. He also served two tours in the Vietnam War. After retirement, he was vice president for development and university relations at Austin Peay for 17 years, where he began campaigns such as APSU’s Candlelight Ball. He was then called to state service as commissioner of veterans affairs, as Tennessee’s first commissioner of homeland security and finally as the chief of staff for former Gov. Don Sundquist. Gilbert passed away on July 8, 2022 at the Brigadier General Wendell H. Gilbert Tennessee State Veterans Home in Clarksville, Tennessee at the age of 91.

The Late Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Bobby T. Ladd (’53) The late retired Marine Lt. Col. Bobby Ladd graduated from Austin Peay in 1953 and also received his master’s degree from Pepperdine University. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps after 26 years of service. As a naval aviator, he qualified to fly both jets and helicopters. He served two tours in the Vietnam War and earned many military honors and awards, notably receiving the Air Medal 16 times. Each Air Medal award required Ladd to fly 10 separate missions, meaning he was cited for flying 160 separate sorties in combat. Because he did not often speak about his time in combat or the times he risked his life for the safety of other soldiers, his family was unaware of his accomplishments until reading about them after his passing in 2019.
The Late Colonel Paul Roberts (’78) The late Army Col. Paul Roberts was a member of the APSU Governors Guard ROTC Program. In 1978, he graduated from Austin Peay and the University’s Army Reserve Officers Training Program. Several years later, he went on to complete the Special Forces Qualification Course. He was in combat during various missions in South and Central America, including Operation Just Cause. He also served as a member of the National Guard’s 20th Special Forces Group in Bosnia. Following active duty, Roberts was an instructor in the U.S. Army School of Infantry at Fort Benning, Georgia. He passed away in 2000.
Captain Anthony Simmons (’89) Dr. Anthony L. Simmons graduated from Austin Peay in 1989 with a degree in robotics. He then attended Naval Officer’s Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, where he was commissioned as an ensign in June 1990. He went on to earn a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School and a Master of Arts in military art and science from the Air University. He also has a doctorate in strategic leadership from Regent University. His 28 years of experience in the U.S. Navy includes four at-sea commands. Ashore, he has worked in human resources at the Navy Bureau of Personnel and at the Pentagon on the staffs of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Chief of Naval Operations. Dr. Simmons served in three combat tours. He is in the final stages of publishing his book, “Championing Organization Wellness.” He is also the founder and owner of Sixth Gear Consulting, LLC, a leadership performance consulting practice.

COREY GIPSON IS COMING HOME. The two-time Austin Peay graduate (’04, ’05) and former student-athlete has been named the University’s 14th head men’s basketball coach and will lead the program through a new era at the F&M Bank Arena. Gipson played at Austin Peay for two seasons (200204) and worked as an assistant coach for Dave Loos for three seasons (2012-15). He most recently served as the head coach for Northwestern State (202223), where he turned around a struggling Demons program and posted a 22-9 record. “It’s a great day to be a Gov,” APSU Vice President and Director of Athletics Gerald Harrison said. “We are so excited to welcome an Austin Peay champion back home to Clarksville as our men’s basketball coach. Not only is Corey an alumnus and a winner; he is a man that believes in the principles of the ‘Total Gov Concept.’ His life and career represent each of its tenets. I can’t wait for Coach ‘Gip’ and his staff to get to work energizing this community and adding the first banner to the new F&M Bank Arena.” As an Austin Peay player, Gipson was a two-year starter at point guard and helped the Govs become the top defensive team in the OVC. The Govs went 4518 in his two seasons, and Gipson never lost a game in the Winfield Dunn Center. “The cycle of life is such a dynamic process,” Gipson said. “Sometimes, in life, you have to go back to where it all started. My family and I are very grateful to have the opportunity to return home. I would like to thank [APSU President] Dr. [Mike] Licari and Gerald for their commitment and vision of reawakening the competitive pulse of the men’s basketball program.” 36 | FA L L 2023
Gipson is very familiar with competitive basketball. In his first game at Austin Peay, he scored a team-high 19 points and led the Governors to an upset win at Memphis, beating the Tigers 81-80 in overtime at the Memphis Pyramid. The Govs went on to win the 2003 OVC Regular Season and Tournament Championships before falling to Louisville 86-64 in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. In Gipson’s following season, the Govs repeated as OVC Regular Season Champions but fell to Murray State in the OVC Tournament Championship. Austin Peay earned a spot in the 2004 NIT, defeating Belmont 65-59 in the Dunn Center before falling to George Mason – a team two years removed from a run to the Final Four. “It is great to have Corey back – again – at Austin Peay,” Licari said. “As a two-time graduate of Austin Peay, the 2012 Young Alumnus of the Year and former assistant coach, he’s familiar with the University, the community and the rich history of Austin Peay basketball. As the new head coach, he knows the potential of the program and shares a vision for great things to come as we launch a new era of Austin Peay men’s basketball.”
Austin Peay outfielder Garrett Martin signed a free agent contract with the New York Yankees, July 11. The Westminster, Colorado native hit 15 home runs last season while batting .333 with 13 doubles. He also led the Govs with a .709 slugging percentage and a .461 on-base percentage. During ASUN play, Martin led APSU with a .370 batting average and saw 18 of his 27 hits go for extra bases (11 doubles, a triple and six home runs). Martin had a hit in each of his first 18 games of ASUN play, with only a 0-for2 performance in his final regular season game ending the streak. Martin left Game 1 of the Florida Gulf Coast series and missed the season’s final 14 games for precautionary reasons. Martin was the third Governors baseball player to sign a professional contract the week of July 9, 2023. Right-handed pitcher Jacob Kush began his professional career with the Frontier League’s Trois-Rivieres Aigles located in Quebec, Canada. Right-handed pitcher Paul Rector signed with the independent American Association’s Sioux City Explorers, located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Austin Peay State University football linebacker Sam Howard was recently named one of two NCAA student-athletes to receive this year’s prestigious Accelerating Academic Success Program (AASP) Career Development Award. As the first APSU student-athlete to receive the national award, Howard represented the Governors at the 2023 Career in Sports Forum and the 2023 AASP Annual Conference. “Sam truly embodies the idea of the ‘Total Gov Concept’ and will be a great representative for Austin Peay at both NCAA professional development events this summer,” said APSU Vice President and Director of Athletics Gerald Harrison. “I look forward to seeing him grow and excel both professionally and on the football field this year.” The AASP Career Development Award aims to support the professional development of student-athletes planning to pursue a career in athletics. Recipients must have completed their sophomore year and maintained a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher. “I want to thank my lord and savior Jesus Christ, for he gives me strength,” Howard said. “This prestigious award validates the hard work that has been put in prior to this moment. It will not only be supportive to my future career but will also continue to build my character.” A junior from Birmingham, Alabama, Howard is a health and human performance major with a sports and wellness specialist concentration. BATES EARNS POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP Austin Peay men’s basketball alumnus Codey Bates was recently named the recipient of the 2023 ASUN Conference Postgraduate Scholarship. A four-year men’s basketball team member, Bates graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science in May and began pursuing his master’s in criminal justice from Austin Peay this fall. "I would like to give a special shoutout to God, my family and friends, other loved ones and to the Academic Success Center at Austin Peay who nominated me for this award," said Bates. "Without the help of the Academic Success Center, I would not be able to use this scholarship to go towards housing, schooling or books in hopes of getting my master's degree in criminal justice, which is a stepping stone so I can go to law school and get my law degree." In addition to being selected for the Dean’s List six times in his collegiate career, Bates was named to the Ohio Valley Conference All-Academic Team in 2019-20 and 2020-21 and the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honor Court in July 2022. He was also a Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honors Society member and earned Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Honors in the Spring 2023 semester.

"Codey has been a leader living the 'Total Gov Concept' as a men's basketball student-athlete since he arrived on campus," said former Faculty Athletics Representative. "I, along with Student-Athlete Support Services, were delighted to nominate Codey for this scholarship. His work ethic and commitment to his academic program is being rewarded with this ASUN postgraduate scholarship as he pursues a graduate degree." Bates' impact has gone beyond the classroom and the hardwood, as he has been a consistent member of numerous organizations across campus, including Kappa Alpha Psi, where he served as the vice president this year. He also has been a four-year member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has volunteered in canned food drives with Loaves and Fishes and Kappa Alpha Psi. Bates has also been a consistent member of the Clarksville-Montgomery County community, serving as a mentor at Kirkwood Middle School, volunteering at Habitat for Humanity, Manna Café Ministries, the Clarksville YMCA and more. Bates is the first Austin Peay student-athlete to be named an ASUN Annual Award winner.
Austin Peay raises $165,420 for women’s sports through LeadHer Initiative Austin Peay State University’s athletics department and the Clarksville community have commemorated Title IX’s 50th anniversary and celebrated APSU’s female student-athletes with a series of events and features.
“LeadHer is far more than a campaign, it represents our commitment to provide an outstanding inclusive experience for our Govs. Though the official campaign has ended with this year’s goal met, the ability to give to women’s athletics at Austin Peay still remains.”
In addition to celebrating women’s sports, Austin Peay relaunched the LeadHer Initiative, with the aim of increasing financial support for women’s programs by raising $100,000 in 50 days. Through the generous support of alumni, faculty, staff and friends, Austin Peay has exceeded its goal and raised $165,420.
Harrison also thanked Deputy Director of Athletics Niesha Campbell, Committee Chair Casey Jenkins and the members of the LeadHer Advisory board for their efforts to emphasize the importance of women’s athletics.

Austin Peay student-athletes keep 3.0 GPA streak going into 12th semester

Austin Peay State University’s varsity student-athletes recorded their 12th consecutive semester with a collective grade-point average of 3.0 or better. The department’s 15 varsity programs finished the Spring 2023 semester with a 3.226 GPA. In addition to the streak of consecutive semesters with a 3.0 GPA, it is the 14th time in department history the APSU athletics department has posted a 3.0 GPA or better. Twelve APSU varsity programs, as well as the Govs dance team, recorded at least a 3.0 GPA this spring.
Austin Peay’s women’s golf and softball teams set program records during the semester, finishing with 3.853 and 3.684 grade-point averages, respectively. They were two of seven teams to post a 3.50 GPA or better, along with beach volleyball, men’s cross country, women’s soccer, men’s tennis and women’s tennis. “The hard work and success in the classroom by our Governors student-athletes is a source of pride for our entire athletics department,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Gerald Harrison. “Their achievements would not be possible without the support of our student-athlete success center staff, as well as the emphasis our coaches put on their athlete’s academic performance. CLASS NOTES Tom Chester (‘73), a deputy commissioner and chief of staff for the Tennessee Department of General Services (DGS), recently celebrated his 50-year service anniversary with the state of Tennessee. He retired on March 5. Chester served on the APSU National Alumni Association (NAA) Board of Directors for 10 years.
Chernitta Sinclair (‘08), Licensed counselor was appointed to the team of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clarksville (BBBSC).
Actor Jerry Winsett (‘74) attended the world premiere of the movie “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania” on Monday, Feb. 6, while wearing the Gov on the red carpet.
Vanessa Cobb (‘10), Montgomery Central High School director of bands, has been chosen to join approximately 400 band directors from across the country to march in the iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Nov. 23, 2023. She was also selected as a quarterfinalist for the 2024 Music Educator Award, which is given by the Recording Academy and GRAMMY Museum.
Roosevelt Sanders (‘82), an administrator for Metro Nashville Public Schools, was selected as the 2022-23 Distinguished Service Award winner by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA).
Amanda Roberts (‘11) published a book titled “LITE: The High Treason Incident.”
Rockelle Coffey (‘84) was named a Makeup Artist Finalist in three categories - Bridal, Corrective and Avant Garde Makeup - at The Skin Games, in Atlanta, Georgia.
Charlene Greene (‘13) was named as a finalist for the 2023 Teacher of the Year in Muscogee County, Georgia.
Tim Prestridge (‘92) was promoted to the president position for Mercy Health – Clermont Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Gage Hallman (‘13) joined the Brentwood Police Department as a police officer.
Dr. Bryan Johnson (‘04) was appointed executive vice chancellor and chief strategy officer at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Tamira (Cole) Samuel (‘06, ‘09), National Alumni Association Board member was selected as one of the Fortune Business Review’s Top 10 Most Admired Women in Business, 2023. She was also recognized as one of the World’s Inspiring Women Leaders Making A Difference, 2023 by World Leaders Model.

Khari Turner (‘19) was featured on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” on Feb. 27. The NYC artist is incorporating water from Black historical sites across the U.S. into his paintings to create beautiful pieces of art with an extra layer of meaning.

LEADING THE WAY
Last year, these individuals and organizations established new scholarships and endowments at Austin Peay, creating lifechanging opportunities for future APSU generations. Because of their generosity, their names — or the name of someone they love — will now be associated with Austin Peay in perpetuity. An endowment is a permanent, self-sustaining source of funding. Endowments are invested, and each year, a portion of the value of the fund is paid out to support the endowment’s purpose. The minimum amount to start an endowment is $25,000. A non-endowed scholarship is supported with an annual gift. This gift is paid out to support the scholarship’s purpose. The desired minimum award is $500 per year. An asterisk indicates a gift that has been included in an estate plan.
