WEDDING COUTURE

T

hey say that the swish of a lehenga evokes a vision of beautiful women of royalty dressed in long embellished and sequinned skirts, their delicate jewellery glistening through the exquisite, gossamer thin odhni. The Indian lehenga found favour with the Rajput and Mughal princesses, swung to the rhythm of music and dance in the zenanas, before being lost in time and forgotten. Till it was rediscovered by revivalists and brought to centre-stage. No one is quite sure how the modern bride adapted this astounding royal attire as her chosen wedding garment. Indian revivalists and designers, however, played a major role in first preserving, and then modifying the alluring garment with a contemporary silhouette. In recent times, the lehenga has metamorphosed into a modern wedding couture garment that weaves within its many folds, heritage, history and culture.

Nouvelle designers have worked around with the silhouettes (much slimmer now then they were in the past and variations that beautifully blend the sari and the gown), to come up with a garment that is India’s answer to the pristine white wedding gown. Besides silhouettes, colour palettes, too, have undergone a transformation — from the traditional red to the uber-cool, trendy colours which appeal to the 21st century bride. “I’m seeing shades of mango, jamun and mauve, besides the traditional jewel colours this season. Of course, the classic red continues to rule,” says the czar of Indian fashion, Tarun Tahiliani, famed for his finesse and exquisite craftsmanship. He recommends a “recall and evocation” of all that is lost and perhaps forgotten. “I’m currently obsessed with Kanjivarams and silk, and have been using them in the new drapes for lehengas and saris. The idea is to evoke our own past with renewed energy — a blend of revivalist craft and au courant

The evolution of the

on traditional crafts and embroidery like chikan, zardozi and kaamdani. Over several fashion week seasons, designers have also been exploring embellishments — from crystal appliqué to thread-work. “For our couture collection, we’ve created our most ambitious lehenga with Swarovski elements. It is Mughalinspired and has taken us over 4,000 man hours to complete. It is a culmination of traditional techniques, detailed embellishment and fine thread-work,” says Tahiliani. Delicate crystal embellishments have also brought to life larger-thanlife couture from designers like Manav Gangwani, Varun Bahl and Suneet Varma. Put all the signature styles together, and the new cuts, colours and embellishments appear as interesting ideas in the journey of the evolution of the lehenga, from the era of the Mughals to the weddings of India’s new-age royalty.

construction. I am experimenting with a versatile modern-day anarkali that can be worn traditionally or as a couture gown.” Gaurav Gupta, known as a rebel in the fashion circles, also reiterates the emergence of a unique colour palette. “Tangerine and all shades of orange are interesting options. Or look at bright and neon colours like pink and green that can be worn on different occasions.” Among his favoured cuts he mentions “sari-gowns” – an experimental silhouette that fuses a lehenga skirt, which looks like a gown, and a sari drape on the top. Among his collection of lehengas is a gorgeous one with a fall of a gown, teamed with a top that looks like a drape of a sari pallu, in dull gold colour. Among other innovative silhouettes is the popular multiple-circle flared lehenga with a hemline that’s nothing short of twenty metres in circumference, almost like a voluminous Spanish skirt. Designer Rohit Bal has popularised this expansive skirt as his vision for the lehenga. While established designers like

Performances at Ritiesh and Genelia’s sangeet depicted the romantic journey of the couple Tahiliani and Bal have led the evolution of the classic lehenga into a contemporary form, where it resembles a draped gown, the next generation of designers like Varun Bahl suggests teaming it up with a corset for that absolutely gorgeous modern-day bride look. Varun Bahl, for instance, has used colours like teal, champagne gold and fuchsia in his net lehengas, embellished with zardozi embroidery and sequins, which are teamed with strapless velvet corset tops. Wedding Rings

W

The circle of

love Once upon a time, it was an unadorned band, fitted with a solitaire. Today, wedding rings have evolved into masterpieces and are often a tribute to exquisite craftsmanship

edding rings symbolise love and eternity. Largely trend-driven, they have metamorphosed over centuries into exquisite, timeless and beautiful pieces of jewels — much like weddings themselves. They are often the result of a rigorous, hands-on craftsmanship and well thoughtout detailing To understand how wedding rings have evolved, let’s take a ride back in time. In the Victorian era, wedding rings had precious stones set in yellow or rose gold. When the oxyacetylene torch was invented, platinum became the vogue metal for rings. The 1920s was an age of exploration, jazz, and exoticism in the West, and wedding rings reflected that sense of adventure and exploration with a streamlined geometric look. They also, often, reflected fashion trends of this creative generation with allusions to Egyptian, Asian and Native American cultures. Today, there is no singular trend that defines wedding rings. Often, they are inspired by a trendsetter. Royalty weddings create ripples across the globe and impact the way rings are designed. The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton’s sapphire ring served to bring coloured gemstones into the limelight. Soon after, Jessica Simpson flaunted a ruby, while Liz Hurley sparkled in a sapphire. Master craftsmen

The Duchess of cambridge, kate middleton’s wedding ring is fitted with a sapphire and is fringed by diamonds

size of the rock takes on a no-upper-limit avatar, jewellers and brands are working towards making that already enormous stone look even more overpowering by setting them in streamlined, minimal bands. Besides rubies and sapphires, minty green tourmalines and luscious mandarin garnets are in vogue. Look at Rose for some gorgeous rings that are embellished with precious stones in myriad hues. For a girl who toes the ‘diamondsare-a-girls-best-friend line’, golden- or pink-hued diamonds are stylish options. Reflecting this trend for the amazing and the atypical is The Gem Palace’s elegant 22-carat gold ring set with a unique, carved emerald, or its 18-carat box ring delicately crafted from gold and silver, fitted with polki diamonds and a big cabochon ruby to form a small box ring. An elephant head and trunk form the body of the piece and

the diamonds and ruby are suspended in a claw-like setting (pachchikam). Its Emerald Cabochon ring is embedded in 22-carat gold and forms a pyramid, with a precious ruby decorating the shank. Square-cut diamonds are a rage this season, and you can actually get your solitaire crafted into a square shape with Cartier’s ‘Set For You’ plan. Its platinum Solitaire 1895, with a princess-cut diamond, will have you falling in love with its unique angular shape. The shape of the ring, in fact, has seen a shift and veers towards octagonal or rectangular lines. The delicacy and beauty is not limited to just the rock, but permeates the band itself. Cartier’s paved rings reflect light in a way that it shimmers even in the dark. From floral patterns (fitted with precious stones), to ornate, opulent etching, there’s a world of creativity that can be infused into your wedding band. Mirari’s Peacock series personify both amazing textures and brilliant colour trends of the season. Craftsmanship and innovation has transformed not just the shape, but also the way stones are set. Picture stones set to slant across the finger or go east-west across it, a technique that not just makes the ring unique, but even adds to the size of that already blinding rock.

and jewellers celebrate this love affair with precious stones by fusing diamonds with them to create eternal masterpieces that defy trends. Contemporary wedding rings also reflect modern-day design sensibilities, which veer towards the unusual. As the

74

The circular shape of the ring symbolised eternity to the ancient Egyptians (among several other ancient cultures) and the hollow centre of the ring was seen as a symbol for events, known and unknown. The ancient Egyptians wore the ring just like we do — on the third finger of the left hand. This practice emerged from the belief that the vein of this finger came straight from the heart. Initially, it was only the woman who received a ring, as a sign of betrothal to the man. The Second World War, which saw men separated from their sweethearts at home, also saw the tradition of the ring become an exchange, rather than a gift from the man to the woman. Wedding rings are not traditional to Indian wedding ceremonies; they have become a part of the pre-wedding engagement ritual only in recent years. They have, however, existed as a sign of love and marriage in the form of bichiya or toe-rings for centuries.

is a representation of your tastes. This is also where you will entertain guests and let your hair down on the weekend. The décor of this room had best revolve around one key element. This could be an area carpet that you bought on your honeymoon, an artwork (maybe from the Delhi Art Gallery) that evokes memories for you, or a chaise longue that is a gift from someone you love. Whatever it is, it has to be something you treasure. Refrain from making a wall colour the key element — as paint is the most versatile decorating tool and can be changed frequently for a new look. Neutral colours for your furniture are advisable, as this offers freedom when you want to make the room look different by painting it afresh or adding an accent colour. The choice of colour can also affect your mood, and could even make a huge room look more intimate.

Remember, a shared passion for listening to music or watching films need not always call for a separate entertainment room. If you want your home theatre to be part of your living room, you could pick out equipment that combines technological excellence with emotional appeal from Bang & Olufsen at the DLF Emporio. They even have a design and installation team to ensure that their products are integrated into any room, be it the living room, bedrooms or kitchen. “One should be prepared beforehand for a few simple but practical questions generally prompted by the sales representative,” warns Charu Makin, vice president of the company. These could range from (for audio) “How big is the area where you plan to put up the system/speakers?” to (for video), “At what distance do you sit from your television set?’. Apart from plasma screens that move to your ideal viewing position with picture quality that adjusts to changing light in your room or ultra-thin LCD screens that bring even the tiniest details to life, Bang & Olufsen has integrated audio-visual systems that allow you to move between rooms without missing a beat of the track you’re listening to or a frame of the film you’re watching. And when you leave the house, you can switch off the TV set, music system and lights with a simple click of your key-ring. Lalique has recently introduced their Lalique Maison range – a complete living room and bedroom, including bed, bar, sofas, chairs, etc. Christine Spliid, Interior Consultant, Daum & Lalique, advocates a style of décor that is timeless — so that one can accessorise with statement decorative pieces. “Colours can bring about a certain atmosphere. In a living room, I would suggest muted or simple tones, as it lightens and relaxes family get-togethers. At the same time, it acts as a perfect background for exciting decorative pieces, which can be a lot of fun to choose.” For young couples, Spliid recommends the Pink Amaryllis Vase by Daum, as its pale pink and yellow hues evoke romantic thoughts and emotions. “I would advise you to think carefully about which pieces you will still love a few years down the line.” This is an extremely good advice, and we would like to leave you with it. After all, the décor of your home makes your style statement — so it definitely needs to be heard loud and clear. Delhi Art Gallery In this Ravi Varmaderivative painting, Sakuntala is seen with her female companions, seated in a thickly forested grove. Clad simply in bark or animal skin and bedecked with flowers, she is a child of the forest. A quill is delicately poised between the fingers of her right hand, as she stares unseeingly into space, bereft of her lover, King Dushyanta. Her stance is languid, as is that of her companions. In the foreground is a basket of colourful flowers, freshly gathered from the forest, symbolic perhaps of Sakuntala’s burgeoning desire for Dushyanta.

Rose

and jewellers celebrate this love affair with precious stones by fusing diamonds with them to create eternal masterpieces that defy trends.
