designand
you
At particular times in our lives, our careers and specialized areas of work are closely linked to our overall sense of achievement and self esteem. It’s important that each new role enhances your career development; that you look for roles that will stretch your capabilities and allow your creative latent to make a great contribution. Design is a profession that is concerned with the creation of products, systems, communications and services that satisfy human needs. Design involves problem finding and solving, analysis and inventions. “ I didn’t get into design to be an artist, to me an artist creates things to evoke emotion. Being a designer goes a step further than that, not only trying to evoke emotion, but trying to make a reaction. It is very objective driven, and that makes it interesting.” -Mike Davidson
Symbiosis at a glance
The story of Symbiosis is a poignant tale in itself. An act triggered by compassion later took roots and grew into this mighty tree called Symbiosis. Established in 1971, the primary objective was to promote international understanding through quality education. Today Symbiosis is a family of 32 academic institutions spread over eight campuses in and around Pune. It draws students from various states of India as well as international students from forty different countries in the world. The Symbiosis Center for Distance learning has about eighty thousand students studying for the Distance Education Programmes. In May - 2002, The Deemed University status was conferred upon Symbiosis and Symbiosis International Educational Cent re Deemed University was established. The Deemed University started with three constituent institutes namely: Symbiosis Society’s Law College (SSLC) Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SIBM) Symbiosis Institute of Computer Studies & Research (SICSR) Symbiosis International Educational Center has been renamed as the Symbiosis International University with effect from 10th November 2006 onwards. Symbiosis Institute of Design was started in 2004 and it has come under the ambit of Symbiosis International University w.e.f. 10th November, 2006. Symbiosis International University now has more institutes under its ambit, namely: Symbiosis Center for Management & Human Resource Development (SCMHRD) Symbiosis Institute of International Business (SIIB) Symbiosis Institute of Telecom Management (SITM) Symbiosis Institute for Management Studies (SIMS) Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication (SIMC) Symbiosis Institute of Operation Management (SIOM) Symbiosis Institute for Information Technology (SCIT) Symbiosis Institute of Geo-informatics (SIG) Symbiosis Institute of Health Sciences (SIHS)
Symbiosis was founded with the motto “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakkam” the world is one family. Here at Symbiosis, we are passionate about excellence in whatever we do.
SYMBIOSIS INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY
Promises to keep … miles to go…
Remarkable academic achievements have highlighted the completion of 4 years. This has been a saga of a very successful journey that has witnessed sustained performance, record of bringing twelve of its autonomous institutions under its ambit and a great tradition of imparting quality education with innovation. There is still a long way to go and Symbiosis International University is committed to fulfilling the promises with greater zeal and stronger urge, in the years to come. The institutions under Symbiosis International University have substantial autonomy in designing the curricula and academic programmes, initiation of research and the internal allocation of resources. Nevertheless, because these institutions are largely selfsupported and in view of the social, cultural and economic importance of higher education, the Symbiosis International University in particular and the Symbiosis Society in general, ensure that these institutions maintain high standards of education in the most cost-effective manner. The University takes its role in Quality Assurance very seriously by introducing a number of peer reviews such as Management Reviews, Teaching and Learning Quality Process Reviews, and Performance Appraisal. It promotes and supports institutions in quality assurance and enhancement of academic initiatives and processes and monitors academic standards. To facilitate further development of Symbiosis International University’s higher education sector, the University adopts a strategic approach by developing an interlocking system whereby the whole Education System in these institutions is viewed as one force, with each institution fulfilling a unique role, based on its strengths. There is a need for the University to play a proactive role in strategic planning and policy development to advise and steer the higher education sector in satisfying the diverse needs of stakeholders. To fulfill this role, the University ensures that at system level, appropriate tools, mechanisms and incentives are in place to assist institutions to perform at an internationally competitive level in their respective roles.

Communication Design
Product Design
The Communication Design course is a 4-year undergraduate programme in which students are given an understanding of the principles, theories and skills of communication design and are expected to gain mastery over the subjects at the end of the course.
The Product Design Programme focuses on developing skills, knowledge and attitude among students. Students learn to correlate technical knowledge, manufacturing processes, ergonomics and other related topics to design products with real time needs.
Communication design can be defined as the effective presentation of ideas and information by means of type and image, whether in the traditional medium of print or in the new digital medium that supports interactive computer displays, multimedia communication technology and information systems.
Soft skills required for the profession are also taught and they are made sensitive to social, ecological and environmental issues. Students are encouraged to go beyond designing individual products to designing holistic systems that work together to meet user needs.
What is common to the range of experiences in the programme is a problem-solving approach to effective and expressive communication, with a special concern for the person who will be touched by the communication artifact. Emphasis is on a design practice that is informed with an understanding of the social and cultural dimensions of communication, along with an appreciation of the power of words and images. While fostering respect for the rich history of books, letterform, and print design, the potential that technology and new theories of human-machine interaction hold for the design of future modes of communication is also appreciated.

Symbiosis Design Cell Since design can be learned only by doing, SID has established “Symbiosis Design Cell within the institute. Design cell at SID is an in-house system that provides consultancy and training to the corporate. Here professionals, faculty and students work together on live projects for the industry as well as for other Symbiosis institutes. This not only helps students to gain invaluable real life experience but also work to establish students and the institute in the industry. The facilities at SID have been planned in such a way that it can function as a large design house. This is expected to establish the brand of SID and help students to get good and well paid jobs on graduation. The revenue generated by this activity is shared with the team that works on these projects. This is an extremely important part of SID whereby faculty members have an additional income source from within the institute. This is aimed not only to provide professional growth but also to make the good people stay with the institute and have satisfying academic, professional and financial relationship with SID.
