India is far too big to attempt to see everything in one visit. Most people choose to visit the iconic cities of Rajasthan (Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur) on their first trip. laos Only slightly bigger than Victoria and with a growing domestic transport network, it is now possible to visit Laos as a ‘standalone’ destination. But, it also makes a fascinating and intriguing add - on to any holiday in Thailand, Cambodia or Vietnam. Cruising the Mekong River (whether by deluxe ‘ricebarge’ or long tailboat) is one of the more rewarding travel ideas in Laos.

It makes good sense to enter Laos from Chiang Rai in the far north, then work your way down to Vientiane. A full and beguiling one week tour would include Luang Prabang, Vientiane and a visit to the Plain of Jars and / or a Mekong cruise. If you have more time, then certainly take the Wat Phu cruise down the Mekong, starting in Pakse and visiting the pre-Angkor temple of Wat Phu. Apart from a vast improvement in hotel accommodation, Laos has changed little in the past thirty years, making it a charming and nostalgic place to visit. The modern world really seems to have passed Laos by, I suggest you don't.

Hence their historic remains, such as Angkor Wat, are monumental, glorious and built on a vast scale. The empire collapsed suddenly and irreversibly (probably due to lack of water for rice production), and Cambodia became a forgotten backwaterâ&#x20AC;Ś it was this that preserved the historic buildings as they were abandoned and left to the jungle. The uniqueness of this historic event means that Cambodia today offers on the one hand â&#x20AC;&#x201C; some of the greatest architectural achievements of mankind, on the other, a simple rural lifestyle that has not changed for centuries.

adventurer, Sir James Brooke in 1841 – for services rendered. Successive Brooke heirs ruled the country as ‘White Rajahs’ until after WW2, when it was ceded to Britain. The unique atmosphere and colonial architecture of Sarawak’s capital, Kuching, owe a lot to the ‘white rajahs’. Today, much of the scenic splendour of Borneo is best seen in Sabah – Mt Kinabalu (4095 ms ) is the 4th largest mountain in SE Asia and offers the fit a rewarding climb; the world’s largest flower Rafflesia is best seen here, and, of course, whilst there are numerous fantastic game reserves throughout Sabah, Sepilok is famed for its’ Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Probably the best beaches & dive sites in Borneo can be found in Sabah.

With so many airline options available from Australia, the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) is a logical stopover en route to Europe and beyond. 20% larger than Tasmania, the UAE is actually made up of 7 ‘emirates’ and prior to 1971 was known as the ‘Trucial States’. The Capital is actually Abu Dhabi, but each emirate has its’ own ‘state’ capital, such as Dubai. Oman is a separate country to UAE but it logically fits into the region. The UAE has long sat astride the trade routes from both Asia and Africa. In ancient times this brought great wealth to the various tribes in the region who acted like ‘robber barons’ imposing taxes on the silk, spices and pearls which passed through their territories. Thus, although many of the tribes are nomads, there are

solid vestiges of their ancestors in the form of the hundreds of impressive forts which guarded the trade routes. Oil has replaced taxes as the main source of income, but as many of the oil wells are off-shore, they do not intrude into the scenic splendour of the region. Of all the destinations in this region Oman most definitely has preserved the Arab culture best – with most buildings, even in the capital, reflecting traditional style. Accommodation throughout UAE & Oman is very up-market and we advise travellers not to venture below 4 star properties. A visit to UAE & Oman is not necessarily cheap, but it is VERY rewarding IF you get out of the big cities and our small group tours are amongst the best value ways of visiting this enchanting region.
