Why offer “optional” power supplies with port powered converters? Simply put, all RS-232 ports are not created equal. Many laptop PC’s for example, deliberately reduce power to the RS-232 port to save the battery. And, if you are working at the distance limits of RS-422 or 485, you might need an extra boost. For the majority of applications though, port power is all our efficient converters need to get the job done. We just want to be sure that you’re covered, no matter what.
Technical Support Note Kelly Explains Why Send Data Control (SDC) Makes Serial Conversion Easier As operating systems become more complex, it is increasingly difficult to control an RS-485 driver with standard software and the RTS line. This is especially true in Windows and multi-tasking operating systems. With B&B’s Automatic Send Data Control circuit, driver control is in the converter hardware, so you don’t have to work with software at all. The circuit monitors data flow and enables the driver during transmission and automatically disables it when no data is being sent. There is no need to rework software or install new drivers. Most B&B Electronics RS-232 to RS-485 converters and RS-485 serial cards include Automatic Send Data Control.

Convert RS-232 TD and RD signals to RS-422, allowing range to be increased from the 50 feet (15 m) specified in the RS-232 standard to 4,000 feet (1.2 km) at data speeds up to 115.2 kbps. No handshake driver control is required since the RS-422 driver and receiver are always enabled. These models do not require an external power supply. They draw power from the RS-232 handshake lines. Many laptop PC’s for example, deliberately reduce power to the RS-232 port to save the battery. And, if you are working at the distance limits of RS-422 or 485, you might need an extra boost. It’s also possible that your application does not include an RS-232 “handshake line” which carries most of the power. For the majority of applications though, port power is all our efficient converters need to get the job done. We just want to be sure that you’re covered, no matter what.
Technical Support Note Joe Explains Why Send Data Control (SDC) Makes Serial Conversion Easier As operating systems become more complex, it is increasingly difficult to control an RS-485 driver with standard software and the RTS line. This is especially true in Windows and multi-tasking operating systems. With B&B’s Automatic Send Data Control circuit, driver control is in the converter hardware, so you don’t have to work with software at all. The circuit monitors data flow and enables the driver during transmission and automatically disables it when no data is being sent. There is no need to rework software or install new drivers. Fiber optic cable carries serial data reliably up to 4 kilometers (2.5 miles), much further than conventional copper lines. Fiber optic data transmission uses light in glass fiber cable as a communication medium. It is ideal for spanning areas with severe interference, such as near heavy electrical equipment, welding or radio transmissions. Being non-electric, fiber optic cable will not pick up any noise.
Transmit RS-232 data at 115.2 Kbps 4 km (2.5 miles) with port-powered fiber optic converters. Models 232FLST and 9PFLST allow RS-232 serial devices to communicate transparently over longer distances and with greater reliability. These models support TD, RD, RTS and CTS and provide the inherent immunity of fiber to data line surges, spikes and ground loops.
Power surges and spikes are created by electrical equipment, by nearby lightning strikes and from other sources. They are picked up by copper data lines and transmitted to the connected devices, garbling messages and damaging equipment. Fiber optic cables do not transmit power spikes or surges, providing the most reliable system possible. Ground loops interfere with data communications through copper. Using fiber optics eliminates ground loops by not providing a conductive path for the ground.
Model 232FLST has a DB25 female serial connector; 9PFLST a DB9 female. Both units have ST fiber connectors. These models draw power from the serial port in most applications. Order the optional 12 VDC power supply for use with low powered laptops and PCs.

Current loop devices use current on or current off to transmit binary digits. B&B Electronics converters interface RS-232 and RS-422/485 systems to the most common current loop ports, 20 mA ports with open circuit voltages up to 30 V. Many models can be modified for higher loop currents and voltages. High speed optical isolators couple and isolate transmit and receive data. Each side can also supply or accept hardware or software handshaking, allowing the higher speed device to be located on either port. A PC is used to configure the Model 232BRC, but once configured, the module may be installed on any system. Non-volatile memory maintains all parameters when power is removed. Each port buffers 16K bytes of data. LED indicators on each port signals when data is present in the buffer. The connectors are DB9 female on port A, DB9 male on port B. The Model 232SPS2 converts data from a parallel port to a serial communication format, or from a serial port to a parallel communication format. Connects directly between computer and printer without making any software modifications. The serial port has a female DB25 connector and supports X-On/XOff control as well as hardware handshaking. Product Manager’s Notebook Joe: How to connect up to 17 devices to one serial port B&B Electronics’ smart switches can be used to connect one RS-232 port to four or more different serial devices. These switches can be controlled in two different ways. The first way is “smart switch mode.” In this mode, the switch is controlled by sending a preamble (usually three characters) to the master port. As soon as the preamble code is received, the selected slave port is connected to the master port. The second way the switch can be controlled is “port combiner mode.” In this mode, a slave port can access the master port by asserting a handshake line. If none of the slave ports have their handshake line asserted, the switch can be controlled using the preamble codes. There is no delay through non-buffered switches. LEDs indicate which port is selected.

An Introduction to PCI Technology
What are universal PCI cards? In the days of yore, the PCI bus used 5 V signaling on the PCI connector. Some PCI buses, including many of today’s newest PC’s use 3.3 V signaling. A keyed notch in the card prevents it from being plugged into the wrong version of the bus. If you buy a 5 V PCI card, it won’t fit into a 3.3 V bus, and a 3.3 V PCI card won’t fit into a 5 V bus. A situation fraught with peril

As you might guess, Universal PCI is compatible with both 3.3 V and 5 V systems. Isolated serial card design requires attention to three things. Special optocouplers isolate the serial signals from the PCI bus. Unique isolated DC-to-DC power supplies provide power to each of the ports and give us port-to-port isolation. Isolation zones on the 3PCIOU2 Finally, the circuit board uses strict spacing rules – we call these isolation zones. Surges follow the path of least resistance, and a tiny gap between traces is an easy path for surges to reach the delicate computer bus, bypassing expensive isolation components entirely.
