Introduction Dutch Heritage The Dutch have lived below sea level since the Middle Ages. Securing land and lives against water, whether it flows from the sea or from rivers in the hinterland, has been a challenge we have faced for centuries. At the same time, the Netherlands have a comfortable lifestyle and a thriving economy thanks to the opportunities water brings. Water is our heritage. Knowledge and expertise This Dutch heritage has evolved into the world’s most renowned knowledge and expertise in the world of water. This will now be on display in full force alongside other global leaders in this first edition of the International Water Week taking place in Amsterdam. Coming together The week consists of various components, including the internationally renowned Aquatech Amsterdam trade exhibition, and Aquaterra, the world forum on delta and coastal development. Esteemed organisations, such as the International Water Association (IWA), the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP) and Waternet (the only water cycle company in the world), will join in coherent programme to host water conferences, water activities and public events. Dutch Water Sector ambition and programmes Given The Netherlands’ global position and ambition in the field of knowledge exchange and education in water, business 1
development and innovation, the country offers a real time showcase you must see for yourself. The Netherlands has developed a variety of programmes and projects that embrace their ambitions and aim at innovative solutions towards global water challenges. The water innovation programme is an example of one of these ambitious and challenging programmes. The next phase of this programme runs from 2012 – 2017 and millions will be invested in progressive research, technological breakthroughs and new ways to improve on integrated water resources. Small-scale, real-time show case The current challenges of climate change and economic growth are forcing many countries to find innovative ways to manage their integrated water resources. The Netherlands in itself form a small-scale but real-time show case of the accomplishments that are possible when good water technology meets good water management. Climate change confronts us, the Dutch, with complexities that we as a nation cannot address alone. We are therefore pleased to join forces with other countries facing the same issues. Join us and join the world! So find out how you can shape the future of your region in the world, using the risks and opportunities water offers. Prepare for the changes of the coming century in your area. Make sure you can meet future challenges make sure you adept to the challenges ahead. We look forward to welcoming you to Amsterdam and the Netherlands for this unique International Water Week

Water Innovation Programme - Reducing time to market Technology push & Market pull
The Dutch have successfully developed and applied the Water Technology Innovation Program, supporting innovations being created by companies (including SME’s) and research institutes. The goal of the programme is to decrease the time to market for new innovative technology and to accelerate the export. In order to speed up the innovation cycle, close collaboration is needed in research, development and application in the Dutch market, as well as to export Dutch water technology. The Water Innovation Programme 2.0 is a public-private partnership developed by the private sector for the private sector, supported by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, to improve the Dutch innovation environment and provide opportunities to join one of the leading water innovation hubs in the world, developing and supplying integrated solutions around water quality and water management.

IWA and Waternet Conferences October 31 - November 4, 2011 The International Water Association (IWA), together with the Royal Netherlands Waternetwerk and Waternet, will organise a number of conferences during the International Water Week. Partners The IWA, a global network of 10,000 water professionals, spans the continuum between research and practice, covering all facets of the water cycle. During the International Water Week, they partner with the only water cycle company in the world, Waternet. Waternet is the first company in the Netherlands and in the world, that combines all water services under one roof. The organisation is responsible for drinking water, waste water, surface water and safety behind the dykes. Topics Innovations in Water technology The most important innovations in drinking water production and waste water treatment will be presented. Special attention will be for the treatment of emerging substances and the recovery of nutrients. Nanotechnology in Water treatment The development and best practices in nanotechnology will be presented, including research activities and most recent innovations. 9
Water Cities in transition (climate adaptation) Water Cities which are affected by Climate Charge (rising sea level, heavy rainfall or draught) and have to adapt. The gathering will focus on the ways in which water management can influence urban planning. Water related transition to sustainable energy To meet the goals for reduction of Carbon Dioxide Emissions, new sources of sustainable energy have to be developed. Water contains both chemical (waste water) and thermal energy (ground water, surface water, drinking water and waste water), which could be put to use. Water Operator Partnerships The Millennium Development Goals on drinking water and sanitation for 2015 ask for a strong incentive from the water companies. International benchmarking International benchmarking among water companies is important to improve efficiency and to present results to the public. New developments and initiatives are presented. Public-private partnership in urban planning The conference will discuss how water operators and managers can be involved in urban planning. One of the questions is, should it be just by regulation or also by investing and participating in risks?

GWI workshops on Water Framework Directive November 1-2, 2011 The Water Framework Directive is the most significant piece of regulation to come out of the EU in the past two decades. It introduces bold targets for water quality and river basin management, with the cost of financing the improvements allocated on the “polluter pays principal. The implications of the directive are potentially very deep and very broad, but at the same time, highly uncertain. Global Water Intelligence (GWI) is addressing this problem by bringing together from across Europe the people who really understand the directive for two day-long workshops. Workshops The first will address the issue from the point of view of utilities and public water agencies. The second will look at the problem from industrial water users’ point of view. Enabling delegates The aim will be to enable delegates to assess their risks and develop their strategy. It is a must attend event for all utility managers, engineers and compliance officers working in businesses that use water, as well as suppliers and others who see an opportunity in the Directive. 13
