pool fun Make a Splash. Bring Fun to Your Pool! By Keisha Rigby, Marketing and Communications Assistant, American Pool Enterprises, Inc.

When it comes to pool ownership there is no right way to enjoy it. Simply jumping into the cool blue water on a hot day is all that’s needed to invoke a sense of joy. But what about when that’s not enough? It’s time to take your pool to the next level. Infuse it with fun! Set your pool apart from all others – with a little imagination and guidance, your pool is sure to be the new hot spot in your community. Our solution?

Think entertaining. Think multipurpose. Think add-ons.

Light it up

What's in a theme?

drinks anyone?

The fun shouldn’t stop when the sun goes down. Enjoy your pool at night with strategic lighting that is not only practical, but decorative. There are plenty of options to choose from: waterproof, color changing, and pattern alternating. Arrange lights around your pool’s perimeter, in the water, hanging from surrounding trees and shrubbery, and in areas throughout your backyard where guests tend to congregate. Lighting is the first step to transforming your pool and backyard. Purchase lights that suit your taste and preferences.

Transport friends, family, and neighbors to the destination of your dreams. As you let your imagination run wild, turn your swimming pool into a tropical island, a nautical dockside adventure, a Hawaiian luau, or a stroll down memory lane. Remember drive-in theaters? With the addition of a projector or big screen TV, pre-popped popcorn complete with mix-ins (s’mores + popcorn? Yes, please!), pool floats, and an old family classic. It’s movie night right in your backyard.

Swim-up bars aren’t exclusive to vacation hot spots like Miami or Cancun, bring that vacation atmosphere to your home! Swim-up bars are an automatic crowd favorite. But, don’t just stock up on adult beverages, keep your bar loaded with water, sports drinks, and other great hydrators like coconut water to keep the fun times going all day long. Personalize your swim-up bar with built-in underwater bar stools, trendy tiles, and architectural overhangs for a break from the sun.

Tip: Only purchase lighting

specifically labeled for outdoor use.

Tip: For a true movie theater

experience, install a sound system in your backyard.

Catch some rays

Make a splash

Take a slide

Swimming pools are a great way to decompress. Perfect for those looking to renovate or venture into pool ownership, tanning ledges are raised pool surfaces of shallow water that provide the ideal setting for basking in the sun while remaining cool in the water. Tanning ledges take rest and relaxation up a notch.

Our number one pick for the most pool fun are splash pads. Your family will absolutely love it!

It’s true, everyone loves a waterslide. After having a waterslide professionally installed, the only things missing are the funnel cake and photo ops with Mickey Mouse. Your kids will thank you; Your friends will thank you; Your neighbors will thank you for the hours of fun waterslides bring. Depending on your taste and space, slides can gently slope, corkscrew, curve to the right, or wave up and down into water deep enough for any swimmer to splash into the water safely.

Think of a splash pad as an interactive water playground. With an endless number of unique combinations available, this feature adds a fun twist to any backyard. With a little coordination with your builder, it could also double as an outdoor water feature. Splash pads can be as large or as small as your outdoor space allows.

Food always

Chasing waterfalls

It’s common knowledge, the best way to keep everyone happy is to keep them well fed. Swimming works up a large appetite. Invest in an outdoor kitchen area to compliment your pool that is sure to keep all pool goers well fueled during long breaks between swimming. Like swim-up bars, outdoor kitchen spaces can be customized – your imagination is the only limit!

Give your pool a luxurious makeover while also giving pool goers something to marvel at. For young children, waterfalls can be a constant source of amusement. For adult crowds, waterfalls add serenity complimented by the relaxing sound of splashing water. Waterfalls amp up the luxe when lined along the pool’s perimeter, brought to life with colorful lighting, serving as an above level cascading hot tub combination, or used to conceal a hidden enclosure.

Tip: Don’t forget

to update your insurance and set pool rules for using the slide.

The 5 W's of enzymes Stop Scrubbing Scum Lines and Enjoy Crystal Clear Water By NC Brands L.P.

after

before

Who should use enzyme products? The simple answer is EVERYONE! Enzyme products have evolved over the years to a point in which there are specific products based upon the needs of each and every body of water.

What are enzymes? There are two different types of enzyme products available in the swimming pool and spa industry today. These products are either commercially manufactured or broad spectrum enzymes. Both allow for visible results, but work a bit differently based upon how they are made. A manufactured enzyme is a targeted product which focuses primarily on fats and oils. One benefit you will see is the reduced

8 Aquatic Leader Magazine | FALL 2016

time and effort needed to maintain the waterline cleanliness in a pool. However, if you had to choose between the two, broad spectrum enzymes are the way to go. Broad spectrum enzymes are made through a fermentation process (similar to the one used for alcohol) and they are capable of thousands of reactions in swimming pools and spas. These enzymes break down non-living organic matter such as sweat, lotion, sunscreen, body oils and more in a naturally based way. The enzymes breakdown the foreign

material found in pool and spa water, piece by piece, or until there is little left other than water and air. Enzymes are a commonly discussed item in many other industries, including health and wellness (enzymes in our stomachs), beauty products (enzymes in a facial peel), and even at-home maintenance (enzymes in septic and drain cleaners). Enzymes are everywhere, so why not use them in a pool or spa?

When do i add enzymes? Enzymes can (and really should) be used primarily as a maintenance product in addition to your regular sanitizer and balancing efforts. Enzyme maintenance products are formulated to be applied in weekly doses (the dosage amount and product used is different for pools and spas). When using an enzyme maintenance product weekly, you can actually take it one step further and split the dose into daily feed amounts (this is especially great for commercial pools). Enzymes work while guests are swimming. As non-living organics (bather waste, sunscreens, etc) are added to the water, you can break them down as you go instead of waiting for them to build up and cause issues with the filter, water clarity, or the waterline. Another opportunity in which enzymes can help is to be used as a problem-solving product. In the case of property damage as a result of vandalism, enzymes can put in overtime. Enzymes work very well at restoring your pool to its former glory removing paint and other forms of vandalism. Enzymes have saved the day so many times when pools have been the victim of unnecessary destructive behavior.

Where enzymes Should be added? You should select an enzyme product for the body of water for which it was formulated. For example, a spa can have very different needs than those of a swimming pool. Spas deal almost

entirely in bather wastes, such as makeup, hair products, and lotions. Enzymes formulated for these bodies of water target specific factors along with things like sweat and body oils, and all of the other fun things that end up in spas. They are also buffered to last longer in warmer water environments, like hot tubs for example. Swimming pools protect against these types of non-living organics in addition to the environmental factors that can affect pool maintenance. Environmental factors can include pollen (which is heavy in the springtime), bird waste, and (strangely enough) even jet fuel dropped by planes landing in the area. Enzymes formulated for swimming pools are designed with all of these needs in mind and more. Professional research confirms the amount of organic waste left behind from bathers and the numbers are quite shocking. It is a commonly accepted standard in the pool and spa industry that each bather leaves behind about 16 ounces of non-living waste in 45 minutes to an hour in a body of water.

places their remains like to stick is at the tile line. We’ve all seen this unsightly buildup at times, and enzymes will work to control it from coming back.

Superior water clarity Your pool or spa will sparkle like never before when an enzyme is included in your weekly maintenance. When there is less “stuff” (non-living gunk and grime) in the water, it will show in its appearance.

Increased efficiency This means an all-around easier-to-maintain pool or spa. Enzymes work hard, so you don’t have to. Much like the rest of our world, the swimming pool and spa industry has evolved quite a bit since its inception years ago. Why then, should we not consider proactive pool and spa care as an alternative to our traditional “put out the fire” approach?

Now that is a lot of “stuff” to break down - enzymes can help with the job!

Why should I use enzymes? The bottom line is that you should use enzymes to make your pool or spa maintenance easier. When you use enzymes as a part of your maintenance program, the benefits that you will see are listed below:

Increased filter life cycle Less filter cleaning for you! This occurs because enzymes are working constantly to break things down in the water before they have a chance to build up on the filter.

Using an enzyme will enhance water clarity and reduce overall pool and spa maintenance. Enzymes allow pool owners to spend more time enjoying the water, and less time laboring over it. Stop scrubbing scum lines and enjoy crystal clear water with enzymes!

Reduction of scum lines Less scrubbing of the tile line for you! When non-living organics partially break down, one of the 9 Aquatic Leader Magazine | FALL 2016

Value of Having a Pool Service Provider Safety

More Bang for your Buck

Pool chemicals, if not stored and handled properly can be dangerous. In 2012 there were almost 5,000 swimming pool related chemical injuries.

Most major product manufacturers offer extended warranties on their products (motors, pumps, filters etc.) if installed by a certified professional. Professional installation reduces hassle should anything fail. Not having to “own” the repair/warranty process will reduce a lot of time and frustration.

Eliminating harmful chemicals from your home offers peace of mind, especially if you have children.

diy danger Do-it-yourself repairs are a great way to try and save money. There are some dangers that could result in injury or death if those repairs are not done properly and to code. Some of the most common injuries that could occur are Electrocution and Drowning.

Save the Headache Everyone gets busy. When a swimming pool professional regularly services your pool, it is much easier to stay on top of the pool’s needs. When you can’t keep up with the needs of your swimming pool, further issues develop. Maintaining a swimming pool costs less time, energy, and money than rehabbing one.

Residential customers

Peace of mind Knowing that your pool is professionally maintained by a professional service provider who can balance the chemicals in your pool, takes away the fear and concern that it is done correctly. Your pool should be something you look forward to, not dread.

Maintain your investment Regular upkeep will help prevent costly repairs such as Cartridge filters cleanings Sand changes Draining of your pool’s water

Save Time Service providers can perform necessary maintenance work or unforeseen repairs in a timely fashion. When there is only a limited amount of time during the year that your swimming pool is in use, closing your pool for an extended period of time for repairs takes a lot of the value and enjoyment away from pool ownership. Your service provider will know your equipment. Your provider will have a record of any issues that previously occurred with the pool.

Staying in the know Your service provider is going to help ensure that you are aware of any changes in the industry that you or your swimming pool could benefit from. 10 Aquatic Leader Magazine | FALL 2016

There is a mutual vested interest in keeping your swimming pool in working order. Your provider can’t keep you a happy customer, unless the pool is ready for you to swim.

commercial customers Knowledge There are so many county, state and federal regulations. Having a professional service provider visiting the property on a regular basis, makes it much easier to stay compliant.

HOA Board members Education Keeping a pool property in compliance is a team effort. Having a professional pool service can help with the instruction and education of HOA boards, as well as property managers.

Staying compliant You don’t know, what you don’t know… With so many government agencies involved in making sure a commercial pool is safe, there are constant updates, changes and new regulations. Having a professional, will help you keep up with these changes.

Partnership

Safety, Safety, Safety

Many of the regulations and oversights that deal with commercial pools require permits and government approval. This process can be confusing and time consuming. Having a professional pool service involved can help you through this process. A company with a good reputation and respected by the county inspectors will help greatly with the compliance and approval process.

With commercial properties, there are so many aspects of the pool that are of great importance to swimmer’s safety. Having a professional on site will help assure various items are kept up with and remain in working order. Here are just a few examples: Drain covers

Emergency response team There is never a good time to have a problem or issue with a commercial pool, but after normal business hours can be extremely troublesome. Having a professional service that offers 24 hour response can be an invaluable resource.

Reduction in Waste Many chemicals have a rather limited shelf life. If these chemicals are used after expiration, they will not affect the swimming pool as expected or needed. This could lead to overuse or wasted time balancing or treating the pool.

Chemical balance Hand rails and ladders Life saving equipment Skimmer Covers

CpO Certified Hiring a professional service provider will assure that there is a CPO (Certified Pool Operator) on site, looking over your pool on a regular basis.

a day in the life

of a pool technician

Phoenix, Arizona is one of the most difficult places in the United States to take care of a pool. Temperatures can reach 120â °F, and monsoon storms frequent the summer months. Despite these challenges, there are approximately 250,000 residential pools in the Phoenix metro area alone, making Arizona a rich market for pool builders, suppliers, and service technicians alike. Understanding all that goes into maintaining a healthy pool is important for any pool owner. Take a peek into a day in the life of a pool technician.

5:30am The sun is beginning to rise and it’s time to load up the truck! A tech has to load three 50lb tanks of gas chlorine and make sure there are plenty of chlorine tabs. He or she also needs to check the stock of Diatomaceous Earth (DE), sodium bicarbonate, cyanuric acid, muriatic acid, and soda ash.

6:00am The tech will check to see if there are any special client notes regarding any of their pools for the upcoming day. Are replacement parts needed for any of their properties? Some customers may provide keys to their property gates — are the keys in hand? Check!

6:20am On-going physical labor in the heat calls for lots and lots of water! A tech needs to stay hydrated while working in the field all day. Time to fill up the water jugs before heading to the first stop.

12 Aquatic Leader Magazine | FALL 2016

6:30am Safety is most important! Before leaving the office, a full inspection of the work truck is completed to ensure that the vehicle is safe to operate. Then, it’s time to hit the road.

7:15am We have finally arrived to our first property of the day! It’s time to grab all of the equipment from the truck for the pool: pole, net, brush, hose, vacuum head, bucket, 50lb chlorine tank, and any other chemicals that pool may need.

7:30am The pool surface is skimmed to get any obvious debris out of the way. This takes an average of about 5-10 minutes. Then, the pool equipment is turned on and inspected to make sure it is working properly.

7:45am Time to vacuum! The bottom of the pool is cleaned and vacuumed which usually takes 15-20 minutes depending on the size of the pool and the amount of debris or residue.

8:00am Not sure if your pool chemicals are balanced? No problem. Your tech has that covered. Any unbalanced chemicals will be adjusted in the pool.

13 Aquatic Leader Magazine | FALL 2016

Prepare for your Pool Visit Secure dogs, cats and any other pets. Unlock gates and doors (unless a key has been provided to your pool tech). Remove any obstructions blocking the path to your pool.

Turn off sprinklers and disarm any necessary alarm systems. Prior to visit, inform pool tech of any existing issues or special instructions.

8:20am

Time to add the sparkle. The pool walls are brushed down to make sure they are sparkly clean! This only takes about 5-10 minutes.

8:30am Pool baskets are cleaned and emptied of any debris. Hopefully no frog families are hiding out in there! Don’t worry, your tech will save those little friends too.

8:40am Pool equipment is double and triple checked for any leaks, repairs or needed parts.

8:50am Everything is running smoothly and sparkly clean… now it’s time to head over to the next spot on today’s route.

Rinse and repeat In one day, a technician will visit an average of 25 pools. Some technicians have a total of 150 pools on their pool route. Every pool and property is different, but a full pool clean usually takes an average of 30-40 minutes. Although each day is full with pool stops, not every pool route or week day requires 13 hour days.

6:15PM A formal report is written up for any repairs or parts needed that the tech noticed throughout the day. The office will contact those specific customers to keep them apprised of the issues the tech found at their pool and offer options on resolving those issues.

Swimming through trenches! Balancing on beams! Hanging off cliffs! Jumping off mountains! SwimJitsu brings swimming to a whole other level. SwimJitsu is a challenging, in-water obstacle course created by USA Swimming and the North American Sports Group that combines the spirit of American Ninja Warrior with beginner swimming skills to offer a fun twist to the traditional sport of swimming perfect for children. Swimjas, navigate the course with four additional activities. They are tested on a series of essential beginner level swimming skills such as diving, kicking, speed and agility. Prizes are given to the top eight swimjas in each age group who finish the course in the fastest time. “The purpose of SwimJitsu is to entertain, but also to bridge the gap between knowing how to swim and joining a swim team,” said USA Swimming Marketing Director Jim

Fox. “Parents will see their kids feeling more confident in the water and SwimJitsu will introduce values such as achieving goals, team comradery and a friendly competitive spirit.” In 2016, SwimJitsu had a 95% satisfaction rate amongst swimjas who attended the event and 85% of parents recommending SwimJitsu to friends. The ‘edu-tainment’ factor of SwimJitsu allows kids to experience the fun of swimming and gain confidence in their swimming skills, while parents learn the benefits of joining a swim team. “Bringing SwimJitsu to our city provided us a tremendous opportunity to increase exposure to the sport of swimming,” said King Marlin Swim Coach, Kathy Mendez who hosted a SwimJitsu event in April earlier this year in Edmond, Oklahoma. “I think the thrill of racing the clock and other competitors on the main course gave participants a taste of competitive swimming. We had many families approach us at the event with an interest in learning more about our team and the sport.” See it for yourself. POOL TRENDS By Keisha Rigby, Marketing and Communications Assistant, American Pool Enterprises, Inc.

There are times when you just have to go all in. Deciding whether or not to revamp your home is definitely one of those moments. Don’t let the hesitation of starting a new project stop you from starting at all. With a multitude of new innovations and resources flooding the swimming pool industry, taking the plunge into a pool re-design or water feature construction has never been easier. All you need is a little push and a lot of inspiration to kick-start the process. Luckily there’s plenty of inspiration out there to motivate even the most cautious of property owners. From the humble years of white plaster to the most recent days of technology overload, swimming pool trends have only become more advanced and exciting. With the help of our network of experts, we’ve navigated through it all to find our favorite swimming pool trends currently dominating the pool industry.

Underwater speakers

Automation

Take your playlist underwater. With a sound that could rival the highest end of personal headphones, the crystal clear quality of underwater audio is unlike anything you’ve ever heard before. The key — water is a superconductor when it comes to transmitting sound waves. In fact, sound can travel up to four times faster in water than through air.

Although swimming pool automation has been a mainstay for a few years, with each passing season we get that much closer to living “the Jetson dream,” full automation. Now pool owners can control just about every pool or water feature related system from virtually anywhere in the world. At work? No problem. On vacation? Sure. From the comfort of your own bed? Without a doubt. Mobile apps combined with a new class of thoughtfully crafted pool equipment gives you the power of convenience at your fingertips. Don’t think of automation as just another sales gimmick. Top brands employ these special capabilities to make swimming pool ownership a painless experience. No longer do you have to memorize the buttons on a control panel or play scavenger to find the switches hidden around the pool. With automation, owners can remotely turn on/off systems,

For most homeowners, one speaker, especially at $1,000 a pop, may be enough, but for larger more complicated pools more investment may be needed. Experts recommend that speakers are at least 20 feet apart and patterned adjacently to avoid interference. Owners looking to build a new pool or with certain underwater light fixtures are at an advantage when it comes to installation. Adding speakers to an existing pool proposes a challenge for wiring and outdoor (above ground) sound system integration.

Pros

For professionals, installation is similar to installing an underwater light system.

Cons

The expense; During colder months special care may be required to avoid equipment damage.

19 Aquatic Leader Magazine | FALL 2016

monitor chemical levels, manage lighting and heating, and receive efficiency reports. After the initial setup, your phone is a one-stop-shop.

Pros

Cons

Lockout functions eliminate the ability of strangers (or rental tenants) to adjust equipment unknowingly. Integrating multiple automated devices can be tedious, and nearly impossible for products across different brands.

Expert Picks: Hayward’s

E-Command. The configurable system is ideal for controlling pool, spas, sprinklers, salt water systems and so much more.

methods. When it comes to our swimming pools, the gas is dissolved in the water from a chamber to destroy chloramines, organics, and microorganisms found in the water. UV sanitation on the other hand is the introduction of ultraviolet light as means of disinfection. UV doesn’t kill microorganisms like ozone gas, but rather inactivates the microorganisms with its light energy. Investing in a UV/Ozone sanitation system has striking benefits. The water is removed of most chlorine-resistant microorganisms, dramatically less chlorine (if any) is required for a healthy pool, the risk factors for skin and eye irritants are reduced, and corrosion is found significantly less in a pool that implements a UV/Ozone combination system.

UV and Ozone Sanitization

Pros

It’s a superpower at destroying bacteria; Reduces chemical costs.

The most scientific pick on our list. These two popular sanitation techniques combine for an effective 1-2 punch. Alternatives to the traditional chlorine, salt chlorine, bromine, and ionizer sanitation methods, each work great separately, but are a superpower together. Ozone sanitation is highly regarded for its effectiveness at killing bacteria and its ability to reduce chlorine consumption by more than 50%. For those unfamiliar with the process, ozone is a gas created from the collision of free oxygen atoms with oxygen molecules through high voltage ionization or similar

Cons

UV/Ozone systems must be regulated and monitored frequently to avoid incidents.

Tanning ledges take pool entries in the opposite direction. Instead of a gradual descent into the water, tanning ledges are areas of shallow water with an immediate drop-off. This style is excellent for relaxing in between swim sessions, lounging, and customizing your pool with pool furniture. Between beach entries and tanning ledges you’ll have your very own five star resort right in your backyard.

Pros

Great option for swimmers of all capabilities.

Cons

Piña Coladas not included.

Resort style Entry ways Pool owners increasingly look for ways to bring resort style features they’ve enjoyed on vacation to their home. Following this trend, two popular entryway concepts have emerged, beach entries and tanning ledges. Beach entries, or zero depth entries, are sloped entrances into the main pool area. It’s an effect similar to the natural increase of ocean water you’ve become accustomed to at your favorite beach hangout. This entryway is perfect for children or adults with mobility issues accessing the pool.

led lights Here to stay LED lighting transforms any outdoor environment. With endless color options, LED lighting has remained on trend with the popularity of lighting effects. Think backyard light show. Professionals can set up timed light events configured to synchronize specific patterns and

color combinations in your pool and beyond. Pool guests will be dazzled by the effort and you will be mesmerized by the mood it instantly sets.

Pros

Lighting is a great way to highlight your favorite design elements.

Cons

Synchronization can be tricky.

Expert Advice: Don’t be afraid of

using slightly unconventional colors like pinks and oranges. These colors will contrast nicely against the stark backdrop of the night for an out-ofthis-world glowing effect.

Interesting Finishes It’s time to say goodbye to boring finishes. Mixing and matching different materials instantly enhances any pool. Although concrete is cost effective consciously using glass, stones, granite, pebble, and less traditional features adds an inviting personalized touch. Glass tiles come in a range of beautiful colors and can be manipulated into unique patterns that go beyond the traditional water lines. More and more pool owners are taking glass below the surface on the pool floor, and adding a great reflective quality to a pool’s appearance.

WetEdge’s Primera Stone finishes offer the look of a pebble finish and the smoothness of plaster, without any of the drawbacks. Primera Stone is a concept first introduced by the flooring industry – originally developed as Terrazzo floors. The next time you’re at a mall, airport or just about any commercial building with high foot traffic, take a look at the beautiful polished stone floors. Characteristic of this style, this type of flooring lasts for decades with the added benefit of looking great with very little maintenance needed. Depending on the size of the project, Primera Stone installation is only a two day process. The pool finish mixture is pumped and troweled similar to a pebble finish on day one. Day two the surface is ground down with specialized polishing tools. Grinding exposes the beauty of the pebbles and removes the porous layer of cement from the surface. The polishing of the surface is performed by an expert craftsman which makes the initial cost higher than a standard plaster type finish. However, the true beauty of Primera Stone is if the surface becomes dull or stained years later, it can be re-polished with minimal downtime, for a fresh look at a fraction of the cost to re-plaster. Loren Granstrom National Sales Director WetEdge Technologies wetedgetechnologies.com

Stone tiles and elements, like Primera Stone, are impressively durable while also providing a level artisanal finishing that could rival any celebrity pool. Pebble surfaces have become one of the most popular materials. It’s easier on swimmer’s’ feet, resilient to wear and tear, and just as colorful as glass.

Pros

Completely customizable.

Cons

Finding quality and durable materials often require more investment in higher end products.

Pool covers the safe & Smart Choice By Merlin Industries, Inc.

What are Pool Covers? Swimming pool covers protect pools against debris, evaporation, and injures. Investing in a well-made highquality cover significantly reduces your pool's recovery time while maximizing your swimming time when warmer weather arrives. Simply put, pool covers were created to make your life easier. Covers are very effective at keeping leaves and wildlife out for easy clean up, and more than capable supporting huge amounts of weight like heavy snowfall or wandering children for added protection. Pool covers are a safe and smart choice for any pool owner.

24 Aquatic Leader Magazine | FALL 2016

The Difference between commercial & residential covers In the past, safety covers were targeted towards the residential market instead of commercial applications, since these covers seemed bulky and cost-prohibitive for commercial locations. Luckily, technologies have evolved and now commercial pools can get the same protection and visual appeal from a safety cover as residential pools. Merlin safety covers are custom designed for both residential and commercial pools, accommodating for diving boards, lifeguard stands, raised walls, waterfalls, and spray parks. Each step of the design and manufacturing process is tailor-made for the specific pool.

Both residential and commercial safety covers can be made from a wide variety of materials. While solid covers can become hard to manage at high square-footages, mesh covers are recommended for their adaptability.

Every safety cover is custom designed for each pool which means it is safer and provides the best possible protection. Merlin covers can be manufactured to safely accommodate steps, angles, objects, and unique configurations while providing the utmost safety.

In the off season, pools can certainly become an eyesore if they are left open to collect dirt, leaves, and debris. Old water bag safety covers dipping and drooping into the pool water give the same look as well. The new class of safety covers are secured tight and taught over the pool, giving a pleasing look to backyards and commercial pool locations in the winter months.

All of Merlin’s safety covers are made with specifically formulated reinforced vinyl or polypropylene cover sheet and are supported by nylon polypropylene straps. Heavy duty triple-stitched straps are crisscrossed across the pool surface and are secured on the pool decking with stainless steel tension springs onto brass anchors. Merlin’s stainless steel springs have 172 pounds per inch of compression; many competitor springs are as low as 59 pounds per inch! The break strength on Merlin Safety Cover webbing is more than three times the government standard.

Mesh covers have become available in more colors over the years, coordinating with any backyard décor or blending in with surroundings, creating a streamlined look. Pool cover companies are listening to their customers. Merlin introduced its SmartMesh and DuraMesh II materials due to a high demand by many residential customers searching for a natural backyard landscape. Its Kaleidoscapes Safety Solid Covers are available in 12 different colors with the options of striping meet an entirely different need for uniqueness.

Why merlin? Merlin Industries, Inc. is the best choice for swimming pool safety covers. Since the company was founded, it has been their mission to continue to innovate and ensure that their products are the safest and strongest on the market.

Merlin’s patented SmartMesh Safety Cover is the only mesh safety cover on the market that provides 100% (ASTM D6567) shade while still letting water pass through the cover. This high-tech weave filters debris down to 40 microns. Sunlight is what stimulates algae growth and without sunlight, algae

will be less likely to flourish under the cover during the off-season. A cleaner pool under the safety cover means an easier opening in the spring and less money and time spent balancing chemicals and algaecide. With several different options of both mesh and solid materials to choose from, Merlin has safety cover options to fit various budgets and needs.

with Fred Wagner CEO, West Coast Operations, Poolman

I

was first introduced to the pool industry by my wife, who started working at Poolman in 1998. Serving as her plus one to an event hosted by Poolman, all those years ago, I met the owner, Doug. Quickly Doug and I developed a rapport. During subsequent get-togethers, he would do his best to persuade me to come work for him. Taking it for polite conversation, I easily laughed it off. It wasn’t until 2000, that my opinion swayed. He sold his company to American Pool and surprisingly, our discussions heightened. His offer began to sound better with each ask. For the first time I seriously considered embarking on a second career with Poolman. At this time, I had served in the United States Air Force for 27 years was and moving towards retirement. The possibility of a new venture was intriguing. Working with

young people was always a passion of mine and the benefit of working with my wife was an added bonus. So later that year, I made the decision to file for retirement and start a new path at Poolman. Since then, the pool industry has never ceased to amaze me. It’s interesting and ever-evolving. Every year there’s new technology introduced, from the ability to operate your equipment via your cell phone, to the use of variable speed pumps, and the growing innovation of salt chlorination systems. Operationally, I was stunned the first time Poolman launched a new fleet of GPS enabled trucks to track the amount of time our techs are at each pool, while also providing reports to ensure our drivers are operating their trucks safely. It was amazing.

While technology has evolved, our customers have naturally become more conscious of both the environmental and financial impacts of running their pools. In this modern era, we’re seeing more cartridge filters being installed to eliminate backwashing, which saves water while providing top of the line filtration. In recent years, replacing old pool pumps with new variable speed pumps have become the new norm to save on energy costs. Both investments combine technology and customer awareness leading to more money in the pocket of the pool owner.

always, “I’ve worked without her for 27 years and with her for 16, and the last 16 years have been the best”. In fact, I can’t imagine ever working without her again. Who better to have at your side giving you advice or simply taking the time to listen to what’s on your mind with complete understanding. It’s an advantage to have that person who can look at you and tell you bluntly when you’re wrong and when you’re right. Of course, it’s not always peaches and cream, but you learn that sometimes it’s okay to agree to disagree. We have a stronger relationship because of it.

Many people tell me that they could never work with their spouse and my response is always, I’ve worked without her for 27 years and with her for 16, and the last 16 years have been the best. In fact, I can’t imagine ever working without her again. As pool owners look at ways to cut operating costs, sometimes they look at companies that charge a cheaper rate to decrease their monthly service expenses. My best advice on this — be careful! I would recommend only using a licensed and bonded pool service company. In my sixteenth year in the industry, I’ve heard so many horror stories about unlicensed companies taking money for a job only to not fulfill that promise or meet expectations, but have the audacity to be elusive when confronted by the homeowner. If you are buying a home with a pool, hire a pool company to do a complete inspection of the pool and all the equipment. Home inspectors are just that, home inspectors; if you want a thorough pool inspection, hire a pool professional. Poolman treats its partners, employees, and customers like family. This is particularly true for me. Poolman has given me the chance to work with my wife, son, sister and brother. My proudest experience. In today’s busy world, you often don’t see your family as much as you’d like, but I was able to see mine every day. Many people tell me that they could never work with their spouse and my response is

Poolman is a great company with a great team. Currently Poolman services 9,500 pools a week and I know it’s only a matter of time before they reach 20,000 pools. We continue to strive to provide the best customer service, hire only the best people, and push technological advancements to enhance the ease and quality of service. I have so many special memories from my time at Poolman. Hiring a new team member is chief among them. I love hiring a young person, watching them grow and mature, move up in the company, get married, buy their first house, and start a family. It is a perk that goes along with the business. We are, after all, in the people business. One accomplishment that stands out in my mind is Brian Gatlin, current President of American Pool in Orlando, Florida, who had worked with us for many years. He started off at Poolman as a Pool Tech, then worked his way up the chain of command to General Manager of our repair department, and now he runs his own American Pool office in Florida. I watched his growth, and many more like him, with the same pride of a father admiring the success of his children. At the end of

the day, it really is all about the people. After being in the military for 27 years, I have come to develop some deep-seated values: service before self, integrity, and pride in all you do. When I look at the Poolman team, I see these same values ingrained in them. I remember years ago a customer called our office. She was in the hospital worried that her dog was stranded in her yard without any food or water. One of our employees volunteered after a long day of work to go to the customer’s house to care for the dog. There was no hesitation. That’s customer service at its finest! Poolman has seen growth, not only in the Phoenix area, but also at our San Diego and Fort Worth locations. In January 2016, we finally achieved a long term goal of opening up an office in Las Vegas and are very excited about this potential growth. Joey and Karen Calarco are running the office in Las Vegas and it has been a perfect match as they embody our same core values and strive to continuously provide high quality service to all their customers. It’s because of our values, our employees, and our customers that Poolman’s growth potential is boundless. I look forward to discovering many more years at Poolman and what the future has in store for the company that has brought me so many wonderful experiences.

“We have used Poolman’s service for over 25 years and couldn’t be happier. When we travel, we feel VERY comfortable that our pool will be taken care of properly. A few years ago we were in Hawaii and Poolman contacted us about a problem to let us know they would handle the situation and they did. We wouldn’t change our pool company for any reason! We had a family member start a pool service but we remained with Poolman. Thanks for the great service. “ - Gary S. | Pheonix, AZ “Great experience with Poolman. I called their office and they had a technician out the following day to evaluate the damage another pool company had done to my pool. Dan arrived on time and did great plumbing work for my new pool pump.
