MONDAY Yooper Land and the North Superior Shore Monday, 1:30-3:30 p.m. June 2 & 9 Dr. Mary Jane Dockeray was Curator Naturalist of the Blandford Nature Center from 1968-1990. She was recently named one of Michigan’s Women of the Year. Travel with Mary Jane to Yooperland and the north shore of Lake Superior and Isle Royale. It is a different world where the Yoopers live. She will also go to Lake Superior to the enchanting Isle Royale National Park. There will be no cars or electronic devices to distract us, only huge moose, delicious fish, and spectacular scenery. Genres of 19th Century Novels Monday, 1:30-3:30 p.m. June 2, 9 & 16 Ashley Shannon , assistant professor of English at GVSU, specializes in 18th and 19th Century British literature. In the 19th century, the British novel came of age, blossoming into a myriad of forms. Ashley will introduce you to 5 genres that came to prominence in the 19th century: the regional novel; the Gothic novel; the Bildungsroman; the sensation novel; and the detective novel. She will explore their historical context and significance.
If You Can Dream It, You Can Do It Monday, 1:30-3:30 p.m. June 16, 23 & 30 Pamela Daugavietis is a writer who recently published her memoir, No Place Like Home, of her life in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Have you dreamed of becoming a published author of your own memoir? Pam will share what she learned about organizing, writing and self-publishing a memoir, and get you ready to do just that. He wrote weekly for The Grand Rapids Press for many years and those articles were circulated throughout the U.S. How do you want to be remembered? What will be your legacy? In your Last Will and Testament you have passed on your material possessions. With an Ethical Will, you can create something more important; a written document of your beliefs and values. Reflections of Cuba Monday, 1:30-3:30 p.m. June 23 Gordon Olson is Grand Rapids City Historian Emeritus. He is the author of numerous historical books. In 2011, the U.S. State Department announced that it was easing the 50 year restrictions on U.S. travel to Cuba. In 2014, Gordon took part in a two week trip to Cuba that began in Havana with stops including Santa Clara and Santiago de Cuba. Gordon will offer reflections on Cuba and share city and countryside images ranging from colonial architecture to ocean side coconut groves. M: Bronze $16 Silver $12 NM: $21 Location: Browne Center

COURSES CONT. Michael Dodge teaches humanities at Aquinas College. Michael earned his M.A. in divinity from the University of Chicago and his interests include religious and American history. Michael will present a two week introduction to and exploration of notable movies, radio and television shows from recent decades that touch on religious themes and phenomena. How WWI Affected the Social, Political, and Economic Environment Tuesday, 9:30-11:30 a.m. June 3 & 10 Jeanne Petit, professor of history at Hope College, teaches courses in U.S. women’s history, cultural history, and the world wars. She is an author who is currently working on a project titled “For God, Country, and Womanhood: Catholic Women in World War I America.” Wars stand out as pivotal events in U.S. history, and WWI is no exception. Jeanne will examine the relationship between the war and social, economic and political trends in the U.S. including: industrialization; the Progressive Movement; Women’s Suffrage and the Red Scare. We will also consider how the war impacted individual Americans, from presidents like Woodrow Wilson to soldiers and the families they left behind, and also how the U.S. experience with WWI helped usher in the modern age. Solo Tuesday, 1:30-3:30 p.m. June 3 John Otterbacher, PhD., has taught college, served as a state representative, senator, and psychotherapist. He has also taken some long ocean sails including sailing across the ocean – alone. John will reflect on this trip and other adventures of chosen aloneness. Trolley Tour: Grand Rapids Modernist Residential Architecture Tuesday, 10 a.m. – Noon June 10 Pamela VanderPloeg has graduate degrees in library science from Indiana University and in management from Aquinas College. She established the West Michigan Modern Project to document and promote the restoration of midcentury modern architecture and design throughout West Michigan. Pam will lead a two hour guided Grand Rapids Trolley tour of some of the finest examples of modernist residential architecture designed from 1945-1970. Participants will visit many Grand Rapids neighborhoods as Pam shares the distinctive features of the homes and tells the interesting history of the architects and builders. Henri Nouwen: Genius Born of Anguish Through the Aging Process Tuesday, 1:30-3:30 p.m. June 10, 17 & 24 Dr. Shirley Lewis was a professor and dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Aquinas College. She has received many awards including the Board of Trustee’s Award and the Emeritus Award at Aquinas College. Father Henri J.M. Nouwen was one of the foremost Catholic writers and theologians of the 21st Century. His profound insights into living, loving and wrestling with aging are thought provoking and spiritual. Join Shirley as she continues her examination of this extraordinary man and his works, and also discusses the many ways he has transformed her life. What College Was, Is and Should Be Tuesday, 1:30-3:30 p.m. June 24 Dr. Charles Gunnoe will discuss this 2012 book by Andrew Delbanco, a distinguished professor of American studies and humanities at Columbia University. Dr. Gunnoe’s most recent experience as executive vice president and provost of Aquinas, in addition to his former and current role as professor of history, gives him a unique perspective from which to comment on the Delbanco work, which is considered one of the most thoughtful analyses of the current challenges confronting higher education in our country. WEDNESDAY Does Math Make you Crazy? Wednesday, 1:30-3:30 p.m. May 28, June 4 & 11 Dr. Michael McDaniel is professor of mathematics at Aquinas College.. Although his doctorate is in math, he takes his family, faith, animals and OLLI preparation seriously. Those OLLI members who know Dr. Michael McDaniel already suspect that mathematicians have raisins for eyes. In these sessions, we will investigate

some famous and not-so-famous math people, looking to see if there are truly bats in the belfries. There’s a whole slice of culture here which never makes the textbooks but all the math people know about this wacky stuff. Let the evidence be weighed, and we will consider the inevitable verdict: mad hatters and March hares have nothing on brilliant mathematicians.

Ulysses S. Grant – Great General and Yes President, too Wednesday, 9:30-11:30 a.m. June 4 & 11 Scott Stabler, Ph.D. is associate professor of history at GVSU. His specialty is American History, and he has taught many classes at OLLI including those on the Civil War and the Founding Fathers. Many think Ulysses S. Grant was a drunk and a butcher who led his men to slaughter while stumbling over his coattails. Others think he single handedly saved the Union. The myths about Grant abound. Our America: A Hispanic History of the United States Wednesday, 9:30-11:30 a.m. June 25 Join John Pinheiro, a favorite Aquinas college history professor, for a review and evaluation of the book, Our America: A Hispanic History of the United States written by Felipe Fernandez-Armesto. This book is one that is very timely as it speaks to our evolving American society, one in which the growing number of Hispanic Americans will play a major role. Dr. Thomas Bahl has been at Aquinas College since 2002. He earned his Ph.D. in neuroscience from Emory University. Tom teaches human biology, anatomy and physiology. This course will explore some fascinating aspects of the brain and

He says that he is not “retired” but “rewired.” Whereas some people collect such things as stamps or coins, he collects clean jokes known as “groaners.” His collection subsequently led to the publishing of eight volumes of “Grand Groaners.”
Humor is critical to our physical and mental health, and with the winter we have had, we all need a few laughs! Join Chuck as he explores the importance of humor in our daily lives. The Legacy of the American Civil War Thursday, 9:30-11:30 a.m. June 5, 12, 19 & 26 Dr. Fred Johnson is associate professor of history at Hope College. Dr. Johnson earned his Masters and Doctorate degrees at Kent State University. His primary field of study is 19th Century U.S. History, specifically, the Civil War. He has authored many books, and currently is completing the book America’s Blind Spot: U.S. Foreign Policy in Africa 1945-Present. Dr. Johnson has received many awards including the Hope Favorite and Most Outstanding Professor Awards. The Civil War and the subsequent period of Reconstruction have profoundly impacted the development and history of the U.S. Along with reshaping the economic, social, and political foundations of the early republic (1787-1820), these events prepared the U.S. for its eventual global dominance in the 20th and 21st centuries. This course examines the origins, impact, and enduring legacy of the Civil War, especially with regard to how that conflict continues to influence Americans’ evolving national identity, culture, history, and global role in the new millennium. Full Spectrum Yoga Thursday, 11:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m. June 5, 12, 19 & 26 Fred Stella, writer and lecturer, is an ordained Pracharak (Outreach Minister) for the Hindu Temple in Grand Rapids. He is currently president of Interfaith Dialogue Association, and hosts its weekly radio program. The word Yoga means union, and its goal is to fully integrate body, mind and spirit. Fred will guide students through gentle, age appropriate poses as well as impart meditation methods that will deepen spiritual practice. A Deeper Exploration of Film Thursday, 1:30-3:30 p.m. June 12 John Serba has been an entertainment reporter for The Grand Rapids Press and MLive.com since 1996. John, an Aquinas College alum with a BA in English, has taught writing, film and drama at Aquinas and hosted dozens of film-discussion groups . A vigorous car chase. A salty dialogue exchange. A near-silent exploration of a strange world! John will share some of his favorite film scenes and present them for discussion and exploration. Students will learn from these scenes how movies engage our emotions. This class will be in honor of Andrew Jefchak who entertained us with his wonderful film classes. Money collected will be given to the Andrew Jefchak Endowment for Film Studies Scholarship. Location: Browne Center
Dr. David Blair is a practicing family physician who provides leadership for health care transformation. He serves as President and Chief Medical Officer for the Advantage Health/Saint Mary’s Medical Group which employs nearly 200 physicians. In 2009, he was recipient of the Physician Leader of the Year award from the Michigan Hospital Association. Dr. Blair will review the qualitative, financial and service challenges of the health care system from a doctor’s perspective. Insight will be offered into the fragmentation of current service delivery, the struggle to focus on value and the difficulty in creating

FRIDAY Nesting Is For the Birds Friday, 9:30-11:30 a.m. June 6 & 13 Dr. Jeffrey McKelvey earned his Ph.D. at Bowling Green State University and joined the Aquinas College biology department in 1986. He teaches zoology, comparative anatomy and physiology, as well as courses in his specific areas of interest: parasitology and ornithology.
No group of animals demonstrates a wider variety of reproductive strategies than do birds. Individuals in some species pair for life. In other species, pairs may remain monogamous for a year or more (with occasional infidelity in some). Still other kinds of birds practice polygamy, but birds are different in that the female take multiple mates. What are the pros and cons of each of these strategies and what factors influence which species use which strategy? Join Jeff as he explores the mating habits of birds! Popular Music of the 1970s Friday, 9:30-11:30 a.m. June 20 & 27 Dr. Benita WoltersFredlund is associate professor of music at Calvin College, where she teaches popular music, American music, and world music. Her research explores the connection
between music and politics, and she has written on music of the Jewish left, Holocaust music, and Canadian musical nationalism. Bring your bellbottoms to this two-part series on American popular music of the 1970s - the so-called “me” decade, when popular music splintered into a myriad of niche genres. Benita will look at a wide variety mainstream 70s styles, such as adult contemporary, country, progressive rock, early metal, soul, and disco, using the music of Carole King, John Denver, The Eagles, and Marvin Gaye as examples, among others. Climbing the 50 State Highpoints with Rudy Friday, 9:30-10:30 a.m. June 6 Rudy Vedovell, 86, became the twentieth person to climb all the highest points in all 50 states after the age of 50! Rudy will share his stories of danger, thrills and excitement as he recounts this amazing accomplishment.
The Best Advice I Ever Got Friday, 9:30-11:00 a.m. June 20 Dirk Hoffius, senior partner with Varnum Law, is an active member of the Grand Rapids community and an exceptional cook who recently published his cookbook, Just Good Food for Good Friends. In this presentation, Dirk will examine whether he followed “the best advice” and discuss the challenge of cooking, writing, typing, and publishing a cookbook.
