ROADS ANALYSIS

AXIAL ANALYSIS

Depth Map Analysis (source: Author)

Public Transportation Map (source: Author)

Road Hierarchy map (source: Author)

Public Transport: There is lack of public transport availability within internal streets and it give rise to private public transport services like Gramin sewa and tuk tuk with specific stops. Road Pattern and Hierarchy: Settlements like Abul fazal, Noor Nagar and Shaheenbagh are more defined - comparatively. The basic pattern of the Shaheenbagh and Abul fazal are revolving as, there are avenues dissecting the settlement in two parts from. On the periphery are running wider access road and collector road. Visual Graph Analysis: The visual graph analysis has been made by adding layers like boundary, roads, build and trees to understand the most visually open spaces. As visualized by the map the most visually open space is Shaheenbagh and Jasola Pulliya there fore this of high land value and designed as public space then designing a block or building here. This means the temporary police outpost which was recently converted into station after encroaching on the Agra canal bank could

be relocated where it is of more value than hindrance. Depth Map: The depth map shows the data of analysis by taking GD marg as a destination and how much well other nodes are integrated to it. The inference is pretty clear as Noor nagar/ Okhla Vihar has maximum number of nodes to cross to get to the outer road. Pedestrian Pathway Mapping: The pedestrian path and infrastructure is analyzed in the above map. The Major inference is that there is a clear disparity between both side of the canal even if we specifically look at pedestrian infrastructure. Then there are spaces where this infrastructure is available but has not been well designed either its not wide enough or not accessible which just leads to its dilapidated condition. Connectivity: Showing the direct connection of nodes to individual node. This Map shows the number of intersection a roads has. The road with most intersection is Maulana Azad marg.

SOCIAL ANALYSIS

Population Density Map

Activity Map 6am to 9am

Population Density: Toward the north the population is higher, Jasola Vihar is comparatively less dense because of it has newer planned colonies and also okhla WWTP. Looking at the population pyramid we understand majority of the population are combination of women and children.

Activity Map 9am to 3pm

Activity Map 3pm to 8pm

Activity Mapping: The major inferences from activity mapping are: • There is a high intensity of footprint near okhla head through out the day starting from the morning when there are number of labors sitting near the intersection to find work, moving to afternoon when the students are going to jamia and coaching centers. Thus we see a restaurant and cafes being activated due to this. • On the canal bank and under the dock yard children are playing due to lack of recreational infrastructure. • On the Jasola Pulliya there is a lot of hotchpotch due to lack of adequate pedestrian infrastructure

ECOLOGICAL ANALYSIS

Drainage Map (source: author, Irrigation and Flood Control Department , Govt of NTC of Delhi)

Landuse: The land use around is mostly residential. The typology of residential use varies drastically. The second most prevalent use is educational, being surrounded by the Jamia Millia Islamia, Marqaz, etc. Drainage System: • Abul fazal drain is taking sewer of the colony directly to the Yamuna. • Most of the Nalas are closed but some drains like Abul fazal, Tehkhand are open which causes frequent blockade. • Residents of Jasola Vihar are directly dumping sewer into Tehkhand Nala then dumping waste water into Agra canal. • According to the proposal by the Delhi Jal boards, settlements like Abul fazal, Shaheen bagh are proposed to flow to Jasola waste water pump station then forward to Okhla waste water treatment plant. • Jasola irrigation channel gets highly polluted passing through the village. Trees and Greens: •There is adequate presence of trees along the main road, but as we move on inside the localities the number of trees can be seen reducing to almost negligible. •The trees do not seem to be planted in a planned manner rather very disorganized. •There are no defined common places for recreation purposes. •Seating space is not provided anywhere for people commuting through these areas. •Disparity between the west and east side of the canal in terms of green and recreational spaces. Deciduous trees: • Khair tree • Indian elm tree • Mango tree • Indian rosewood tree • Palash tree • Fig tree • Plum tree

Shrubs: • Switch grass • Dwarf Cattail • Bulrush • Castor plant • Juuflora • White frangipani

Mapping Pollution from Jasola Village(source: author)

Sources of Pollution in Agra Canal (source: author)

Pollution Sources • The present situation in Jasola village lal dora area is a clear example of the lack of a proper drainage system. Tehkhand Nala is serving as the main spines for the drain which carry grey and black water to the agra canal. • Thekhand Nala used to drain sewage for plot adjacent to it, which are directly dumping their black and Grey water in it. • There is no road running parallel to the Tekhand nala, which means there is no accessibility and it has become a backdrop for development in the area. • Lack of ground water recharge due to hard paved surfaces. • Blockages caused due to solid waste disposed in the drains. • Lack of proper system of rain water drainage. • Jasola Irrigation is encroached by the local population as it is build over in some part of its stretch.

Issues on the Canal Bank (source: author)

Contextual Issues • The creation of dead spaces is quite evident here lack of urban planning has caused the space to be divided and then either used for anti social behavior or these space will become dumping points. • There is a lack of design for the pedestrian, even though there is a metro station in the vicinity, this has not change the fact that this is no consideration given to the pedestrian. • E-Rickshaw and other private public transport are causing major traffic congestion. There are no stops for e rickshaws • There are various spots under the bridge where local garbage is being collected. • Street animals are living under the bridge. • There is lack of profile on both the banks of canal. There is collection of sediments and soil from nearby construction, which is the reason. • There is a small clusters of J.J. near the bridge on the western bank.

OKHLA HEAD NODE The Main entry to the canal bank is through okhla head node, which is particularly interesting because not only its receives high footfall from Jamia Millia islamia students but also it being a hub of coaching centers in the vicinity it is highly active during afternoon to the evening due to this reason and also it being an intersection between abul fazal, okhla gaon and Batla house the proposals on the intimidate entrance are open and lush green spaces, seatings , public washrooms and drinking water facilities. The design of promenade is such that there are two levels to it. Lower and upper promenade and lastly there in increase connectivity by proposing a new road parallel to the canal. Future proposal ideas: This space is adjacent to Jamia Millia Islamia, they can propose direct entry from the campus to increase accessibility to Shaheenbagh Jasola and Abul fazal bypassing the Tikona park route entirely thus reducing traffic and increasing pedestrian connectivity.

NOOR NAGAR CANAL FRONT DEVELOPMENT This part of stretch is between Okhla head and Jasola village. The proposal is firstly to relocate the slum of approx 220 household adjacent to the abul fazal UP irrigation owned land. Followed by developing it as a canal front for noor nagar. As connectivity was issue for this residential colony there is proposal of road running parallel to the canal. There is proposal of commercial space along the canal on which can be build permanent or temporary structure. To increase the connectivity further there is proposal of promenade running parallel to the canal and also proposed is a foot over bridge over the canal connecting noor nagar with Abul fazal and, abul fazal with promenade.

Metro dockyard proposed as space for Hafta Bazaar

The dockyard will combine activities to provide relaxed spatial experiences with shaded areas contrasting with the efficient and social display. By commemorating weekly bazaars under the dockyard, this would give a vision for urban living by providing a dynamic public realm that mixes semi outdoor experience. The crux of the design is to reduce hight of boundary wall along the dock yard which is major reason for creating this dead space. The Inside space should be maintained with little landscape and the space should be given to hawkers and vendors for commercial activity. Aerial view of Under Metro Bridge (source: author)

This being the major intersection between the colonies on both side of the bank which clearly lacks the social cohesion between the two, the proposal was to connect vertically the pedestrian path and promenade along the stretch of the canal, while also proposing horizontal pedestrian connectivity as a avenue from Jasola Village till Shaheenbagh and the bridge being the intersection between the two will lead as social cohesion factor. As the connectivity with the colonies increases by adding new paths like noor nagar’s and gaffar manliz’s connectivity with the canal and also with the state highway leading to more footfall. Proposed steps around the canal to increase interaction with canal water, doubles as seating social spaces

Recreational Space

Due to lack of recreational space available facilities are designed such cricket ground, basket ball court, badminton court, small public restroom, promenade for cycling and skating while canal bank is also accessible to the public as a green open space touching the water. There is number of the young user and house maker women in these colonies who need proper recreational spaces, keeping them in mind women and children park are proposed. There is a proposal of step plaza which can be used for seating & space is given for vendors and street shops. View of Proposed children’s park

Famous for its food and delicacies, Sheebagh has this strong point which can be exploited. For that there is a proposal of space which will be alloted for street food shops. The proposal has potential for user footprint from all over Delhi if promoted and designed accordingly. Spaces are design to keep the soft scape of canal bank high. A Mound is proposed just at the entry for the pedestrians as a space for sitting under shade of trees There is also proposal of interactive water scape, designed as an extension of irrigation water channel running parallel to the Shaheenbagh. WET LAND PARK

13 | #01 | Agra Canal Regeneration

Storm water drainage system The problems at the site is with regards to high hard scape. Open Spaces consist of interventions that create softscapes, wetlands, riparian buffer, storm water pond, sunken plazas. Buildings collect components like rainwater harvesting, green roofs, and detention tanks since they can be implemented atop or around buildings. Buildings can be modified by their respective owners or tenants with little to no government involvement. The implementation of all Sponge Streets and Sponge Open Spaces on public lands require co-ordination between two or more departments within the urban local body and other government agencies. Wetland Park The land is owned by UP irrigation department though not used currently and left as a barren land it holds the potential to be act as a sponge for high density colonies around the land. There is a proposal of storm water management and as this site lie on the lower elevation comparative storm water of the colonies can be directed towards this park reducing flash floods. Certain amount of water can be maintained for thus providing habitat for birds and aquatic animals. As it is connected with irrational canal channel it can connected with their water supply and the ponds can be regularly filled to recharge ground water. Bioswales Channel Bio Swales line is proposed across the Abul fazal already existing drainage system which is proposed to be converted in to two pipe system where black water is directly flowed to the Okhla WWTP which gray water and storm water is transported through Bio Swales. Influences In Conceptual Planning The City Planning in Islamic Cities was done in such a way that the Mosque was the center of the city and around it was usually bazaar and after that was communities of residence so inspired from that my proposal of the bazaar was that main structure would come in between and then around in would be bazaar. Going with this concept in mind we arrived in the conclusion where we were revitalizing the already existing abandoned cinema to use and along with that constructing a “Propylon” structure for leisure activity such as Good Restaurant, view top and gaming arena for kids. The Idea of “Plinth design” and “Court yard planning” has also been influential in the design process Other inspiration in overall planning were to use mostly basic geometric shape as much possible. Influence In Element Development Elements like Propylon, Domes, Jaali, Minaret, Arches, and Façade Treatment and other details like typical Bengali inspired spears placed on top of structure.

Redevelopment of Mandi House, The Cultural Hub of Delhi Project Type: Academic

Team members: Azhar Khurshid, Tauseef Shiblee, Nouman Mujahid, Nisar Ahmed, and Shubham Singh Design Studio, 2016 INTRODUCING

Mandi house garden city concept used to create the location into cultural hub of lutyen’s Delhi. It is connected through geometrical pattern of hexagon an triangles to India gate and cannaught place. Due to the strategic location of mandi house it evolved into an important cultural hub of Delhi after the building like national school of drama and srcc were built Today, mandi house acts as a gathering space and a home to the theatre artists across the country History In year 1900s mandi house belong to king of Jaipur which was then bought by the princess of Punjab later it was bought by Mughals to present it to the king of mandi who build his palace on the site. The palace was located at Copernicus marg, close to nabha house. After independence it fell under the jurisdiction of Indian government. The estate was later sold and divided. The old palace was demolished to make way for large, modern offices which were constructed in the 1990s. The state house of himachal pradesh, Himachal bhawan, is now located here. The headquarters doordarshan

bhawan of the national television broadcaster is also located here. Context Kamani auditorium, rabindra bhawan, shri ram centre for performing arts, national school of drama, the little theatre group, russian center of science & culture, triveni kala sangam, and ficci are few of the building in context The building in context are of monotonous typology most of the building are government as we will see in further site study. There are center for creative arts which hosts regular exhibitions by famous or upcoming artists like triveni kala sangam, Rabindra bhavan, sangeet natak academy etc. There are guest houses, there is Himachal bhawan to promote the culture of Himachal pradesh which also regulates interstate bus from Delhi to H.P. There is Nepali embassy. Then there’s Indian council of social science research which promotes research in social science and exposes young scientists to the expert knowledge of specialists from India and abroad. So in conclusion mandi house is a rich cultural hub which promote Indian culture and unite people from different background to come together.

This road serves as a transportation hub of proposal of Mandi house. The road includes metro subway which is a source of high density pedestrians footfall. Design Intervention Firstly, A Bus stop is proposed for local buses as well as inter state buses from Delhi to H.P. which before used to park at safdar hashmi road. The major problem we analyzed during the survey was the high temperature during summers, therefore intervention proposes green space to neutralize the heat effect. There are facilities of E Rickshaw and rented cycle which will be running on their own track connecting this road to the entire mandi house. Open spaces can be used for local temporary bazaar to promote the economy and culture.

Proposed plan of Sikandra road

Barakhamba just like any other road does not involve in any activity apart from pedestrian pathway. Design interventions The spaces on Barakhambha road has been assigned such that there is an auto rickshaw or taxi pick up/drop off point. Rickshaw driver come to Mandi house to relax and play cards with each other, keeping this in mind spaces were designed the space accordingly. Spaces are proposed for hawkers and informal shops for drivers where they can buy there sutta-chai & other things. Basement parking is also proposed. Other spaces like cycle stand/ E rickshaw stand are proposed connecting this road with the entire Mandi house through E Track.

This street has a verity of activities happening simultaneously, giving t a strong context. The street has building like Shri Ram which holds a lot of theater drama quite often. It has approx 5 to 10 street food joints. On the other end far from the intersection it has local vendors like vegetable shop, milk booth etc. Basically providing for the local residential with their everyday needs. A lot of inter state buses are parked around Himachal bhawan. Trivia: During our visit at around 5am we found that this street is the hub from where news paper is distributed in the area. Design Interventions Firstly, Buses are relocated from this street to Sikandra road where proper infrastructure is proposed. Intervention are proposed according to the currect type of activity . other the other side away from central park is proposed a jogger’s park and local market while in front of Shri Ram we proposed an interactive space for nukkad natak and a space used for their poster sticking, promotion. Tansen marg is the road which connects the Central park to Bengali market. Out of all road this is the longest. As per of its context this road surrounded by FICCI, Kala Kendra, National museum, Turant street foods, Sangeet barti and national library, there is residential zone as we go towards Bengali market. Design Interventions The design intervention involves reworking of vehicular circulation as it is minimized, there is one way lane which is four meter wide whese would be used only certain time when flow of vehicle would be permissible lets say during office time from 8am to 10 am and 5pm to 8 pm. Also during special event, VIP guest, fire truck emergency. Other interventions like joggers track, street food shops, local hawkers, seating space, most importantly e rickshaw/ cycle track connecting it with entire mandi house are also provided.

FIROZSHAH ROAD

Apart from the vehicle movement and pedestrian footpath, this street is pretty dead. It has a quite good context on one hand it has a Nepali embassy while on the other hand it has buildings like Lalit kala academy and Sahitya academy. Design Interventions Design proposes an Open Art Gallery, which is in two part, one for sculpture while the other for paintings. A small coffee shop is proposed with the art gallery including seatings. Basement parking is avalable just after the entry. Cycle tarck is also connected with the road. A. Towards Parking B.
