The Voxel - Mixed Use

8th semester design studio

Year - 2023

Site location - Luz corner, Mylapore, Chennai

Site area - 9990 sq m.

Softwares used - Autocad, Rhino+GH, Lumion, Photoshop

The Luz junction was identified as a critical node and a focal point for the entire study area. This location is home to the Thirumayilai MRTS and the upcoming Thirumayilai CMRL station [ Phase- II corridor], making it an excellent opportunity to integrate transit systems, create an urban plaza, consolidate existing retail spaces, and add other commercial requirements. One of the possible solution to these problems is a mixed-use development approach.

Remembering Correa

Architecture Competetion (Group)

In collaboration with - Mohammed Safawdeen

Year - 2022

Site location - Kala Academy, Goa Softwares used - Autocad, Rhino+GH, Lumion, Photoshop

Ar. Charles Correa through his work emphasizes on the tangible parameters such as climate, culture and resources. In addition to this he constantly depicts the idea of metaphysical role in the spaces we create. This competition aims at creating a memorial for Ar. Charles Correa. With a deeply rooted context consisting of one of Correa’s most celebrated work, the design can either be a dialogue with it or even be a structure of gratitude

Taking the gallery underground

An overlap of movement patterns in Kala Academy through the weekdays and weekend.

And making the existing path interesting by creating a catenary vault through which people can walkthrough

Placing a mass for gallery restricts the view from the Kala Academy to the river and it also restricts the way to the river-front.

2 pillars marking the Entrance of the memorial

Silhouette of charles correa in the entrance marking his absence with the void

And from the other side Kala Academy is visible form the void marking the presence of Correa living through his marvellous works

The planning allows people to walkthrough and get connected with the river beyond.

The circulation is based on “Parikrama” a movement around a central structure.

Materials

Laterite stone has been used in gallery walls which is abundant in Goa, to emphasize Goa’s regional flavor. It not only sustains the building but also gives it a cultural identity, connecting it to the region Other materials like Brick,Concrete, Bamboo etc are also used.

Catenary Vault roof contain compressive stress only

(i.e. no bending, shear or tensile forces) under the action of self-weight alone. these structures can be constructed reasonably cheaper than typical masonry

and reinforced concrete structures of a similar nature

exploded view

The Life works and prototypes of Charles Correa are exhibited. Circulation follows the timeline of his life - early life to his legacy.

The space creates a maze like plan through which the visitors move.

The development of convention centers, sports facilities, and performing arts venues is increasingly being acknowledged for its role in stimulating local economies and improving the quality of life of a nation’s citizens. Conferences and business tourism are very important sectors of the global tourism industry

The booming convention market necessitates the creation of not merely a convention center but a convention destination with exhibition facilities, shopping, plazas, cluster of linkages with international airport mass-transit systems and adequate parking.
