The brief was to renovate existing spaces of a worn out bungalow for a joint family of 8-9 members from three generations. The challenges included extreme budget constraints and the existing sub-par quality of construction comprising of outdated and worn out elements. Having minimal control over the architecture itself, the concept was to enhance the interior semi-public areas by opening up and trying to bring in nature and greenery. The overall design was kept minimal with the texture and hues brought by the warm wood, stone flooring, nature, paintings and accessories giving it a tropical-minimal and natural feel.

A bamboo retreat- Eco house
Location: Pune, India. Floor area: 45 Sq.m. The brief was to provide accommodation for 10 laborers, with two separate dorm rooms and a kitchen area. Owing to rapid urbanization and lack of feasible land, the space provided was a part of an open terrace area, thus adding to the challenges. The design aims at providing a comfortable space, which is also cost effective and sustainable. The choice of material was bamboo that is widely available in the area and can be easily deconstructed and reused. Every element in the structure is made up of bamboo using a combination of modern and traditional construction techniques, hence creating a conscious structure made up of cozy warm spaces. The dwelling was not designed with a particular class of people in mind but pertains to a wide range of people.

Fig.5: Composite footing detail. This development involves casting of pcc with the bottom of bamboo columns integrated into the pcc footing at specified distances.
Fig.6: Floor and floor joist detail. Bamboo culms are split along their length into strips. They can be fixed directly to the joists in the case of tying or nailing, or a timber batten can be fixed to the joist beforehand to facilitate nailing.
Fig.8: Roof end detail. Bamboo shingles are hooked onto bamboo battens (purlins) by means of tongue cut into the underside. Primary rafter, secondary rafter, the beam sandwiched between and the column are secured using dowel pins and tied using jute rope.
Fig.7: Beam/joist end detail. Wall cladding should not extend past the end of the joists with a slight overhang to the joist resting on the beam and the open ends plugged.
Fig.7: Roof plan detail. The bamboo battens (purlins) have a spacing of 150mm with bamboo shingles hooked on by means of tongue cut into the underside.
Fig.8: Door/window frame detail. Flattened bamboo strips are pressed and glued together to form rectangular part of the frame and door stiles which are attached using hinges.

The use of exposed concrete is done throughout the design as facade treatment. This can also be categorized as brutalist architecture. The use of exposed materials like concrete gives a natural raw feel as the materials are seen in their natural state. Here, aspects of brutalist architecture is combined with minimalism.

The provision of a green roof creates a cooling effect in the livable spaces below, thus reducing the heat gain during harsh summer. Green roofs reduce the heat island effect and filter the storm water runoff. Accessible green roofs provide an additional recreational green space.

The open air oasis creates a connectivity between the interior space and nature and elements like water fountain. Courtyards help in crossventilation and increase the natural air flow in the interior spaces. The interior spaces are incorporated with more natural light, hence reducing the energy usage.
